Saturday, January 9 Oklahoma State Fair Park
OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA
Lot 13
BJCF/JVS Ms Benefit 215H
Meeting the challenges of the Breed’s Future! Ms Benefit will not only impact your breeding program, but proceeds from her sale, will continue the reach of the American Charolais Foundation. Larry and Beth Ludeke, Bar J Charolais, ardent supporters of the ACF, have stepped forward with the donation of this year’s National Sale ACF Heifer. Join them in supporting the youth and future of our breed. Ms Benefit’s pedigree tabulation represents generations of proven results. Eight Roll of Excellence Sires are stacked in the first 4 generations, with many of those being past performance Trait Leaders. Her sire, Benefit 1350, the 2015 #4 AICA Show Bull of the Year, is sired by the 99th ROE Sire, Fire Power, and stems from the foundation Nancy cow, JCA Ali. Her dam, Stealth 215, sired by Fire Water and out of the noted Stealth 7515 donor, is a proven herd sire producer – a son, BJCF/JVS Some Of It E37, was a featured herd sire candidate in the 2020 Texas Elite Athletes Seedstock Sale and finished as a Top 10 2020 AICA Show Bull of the Year.Miss Benefit is a certain quality brood cow prospect – consider her moderate 72 lb. birth weight coupled with a Top 25% Milk EPD. Thanks to Larry and Beth for this herd building and Foundation donation heifer! And congratulations to Larry for being selected the 52nd National Charolais Show Dedicatee in Oklahoma City. The ACF mission is to provide research, development and education activities benefitting the beef cattle industry and the Charolais breed. Under IRS Code Section 501 (c) (3), ACF is a tax exempt organization qualified to receive tax deductible bequests, devises, transfers and gifts.

ny year end is typically a period of reflection. If anyone doubts there will be little reflection on 2020, the word on the street is there’s a bargain on swamp land for sale in Arizona! Most will agree, we just want 2020 to end and we move on. Most certainly, we’ll move into 2021 navigating new norms, but after the past 365 days, we got this! For more than a century, livestock producers have made a proverbial pilgrimage to the National Western Stock Show, Fort Worth Stock Show and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo within the first few months of the new year. So far, the NWSS and FWSS have been cancelled for 2021. Houston Livestock Show has been reduced to a junior show only, thus eliminating all open show, trade show and other affiliated events. COVID-19 protocols have not yet been announced but are sure to be stringent and restricted to exhibitors and their families.
Okla. Cattlemen’s Congress will host the 42nd National Charolais Sale and the Charolais Pen Show, Sat., January 9, and the AJCA Heifer Show and the 52nd National Open Charolais Show on Sun., January 10. We are grateful to the Cattlemen’s Congress staff and board of directors for their commitment to plan a national event while managing public safety during a pandemic. Regardless of the willingness of many to plan and organize, any national event relies on a city with a venue large enough to house thousands of head of livestock, parking, hotels, food service and a commitment from the city to support and promote the events. Oklahoma City has a long history and impeccable record of hosting world class livestock events. We don’t know what’s in store for 2021. It’s safe to say, we’re prepared. Early on in 2020, all of America learned the difference
On behalf of the AICA staff, we look forward to continuing to promote and market a breed of cattle making a difference in the quality of product consumed by a beef loving consumer. The economic impact to Denver, Fort Worth and Houston is enormous and collectively projected to be more than $450 million and that amount doesn’t account for the money paid out in premiums to all participants. Canceling the two events and greatly restricting the third will mean nearly three million visitors will not be exposed to the public face of the food supply and the families that are responsible. As difficult as those decisions have been, all have been based on the best science and protocols we have to manage the risks of COVID-19 infection. We all know livestock production doesn’t have a pause button. The show ring and livestock shows are marketing venues that generate revenue for a beef operation. Obviously, those animals must be fed, groomed and worked toward a designated end point. The clock keeps ticking on an animal’s window of time to show and every sale offering is targeted toward specific ages that fit different environments. AICA’s 42nd National Sale was scheduled for NWSS and the 52nd National Show was scheduled for Fort Worth. Once the cancellations were announced, AICA staff, livestock marketers and many interested folks determined to continue with livestock shows and sales, joined forces to organize and find new hosts willing to carry on. One of the first to step up is the Cattlemen’s Congress, January 2-17, 2021, Oklahoma City Fairgrounds, Oklahoma City,
between essential and nonessential business. Agriculture and the wide net it casts across thousands of stakeholders and sectors, were designated as essential. That essential designation meant the livestock industry was challenged to figure out how to continue to do business, successfully, and stay well. Arguably, no one recognized what a formidable challenge agriculture in America was beginning to navigate. Livestock production may be the only bright spot in 2020, but there simply isn’t enough space to adequately discuss the significance of the historic challenge that has been met and managed. Beginning 2021 may not be business as usual. However, it will be fresh and met with the enthusiasm that our willingness to work with each other, recognize the value of differing thought and nontraditional ways of accomplishing the same goals, has brought us through an historic year. Charolais breeders can plan for a successful 2021 knowing there is significant demand for the breed across all production sectors. Beef industry fundamentals are strong and the forecasts for the upcoming year are bullish. On behalf of the AICA staff, we look forward to continuing to promote and market a breed of cattle making a difference in the quality of product consumed by a beef loving consumer.

AICA DNA Requirements
AI Sires used “out of herd” and all Donor Dams must be DNA tested before calves can be registered. AICA recommends collecting DNA samples during the donor’s initial flush. Check the animal’s record to make sure the DNA work has been done before submitting registration papers. DNA kits are specific to the animal being tested. Contact Marilou Wegner to request a kit. AICA rules require signatures on bulls and dams you do not own. Signatures can be submitted online, fax, mail or e-mail. AICA’s on-line system can answer many questions. Log in with your breeder number and password: Get a copy of a certificate by holding your cursor on the “My Reports” tab and click into “Copy Certificate.” This is a quick way to get a copy of a paper. Duplicates of the original paper must be requested in writing and printed at the office. Keep track of your account by using the “My Account” tab. Click into “My Billing” and see the fees charged to your account. Your current balance is listed in the upper right-hand corner of the page. AICA does not have on-line bill pay. Your most current herd EPDs are located under the “My Reports” tab, click into “Herd EPD Report”. This report can be sorted in many ways, giving you the most updated information. Also under “My Reports” are Ultrasound Barn Sheets. These can be generated as a calving group or individual animals. Go to Ultrasound Barn Sheet by year for the whole calving year group or use the “Custom” report for just a few. Wondering how many signatures you have on specific AI sires? Go to “My Account” and choose AI Sire Signatures. Here you may give signatures on bulls you own or have signatures on. You may also view the list of bull signatures on file in your breeder number. Donor cow signatures are listed here also. The most up-to-date lab information on registered animals can be found using the “search” tool from the website home page. Search the animal by using the registration number, then click the animal line. Click the “LAB Results” tab to see all the lab results for that animal. You’ll find a description of all lab codes there also.

Ronald Maurice “Mose” Hebbert age 90 of Hyannis, NE passed away on November 2, 2020 at the Box Butte Hospital in Alliance. Mose was born March 29, 1930 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Alliance, NE. His parents were Albert and Ima Fern (Shepard) Hebbert. Mose was the oldest of five children. He was raised in the Sandhills of Nebraska in the Gordon and Ashby area. He attended high school at the University of Nebraska School of Agriculture at Curtis, NE, graduating with the class of 1948. It was here he met the love of his life, Merla Lenore Rex. Protein for Pregnant Cows By Heather Smith Thomas
C
ows need different nutritional levels at different stages of gestation. As the fetus grows larger, the cow’s nutrient needs increase. Protein requirements are even higher for young cows. If you keep the young cows (first and second calvers) separate from the main herd, they can be supplemented with protein, if necessary, without having to supplement the whole herd. Mature cows can be roughed through winter and early spring (as they approach calving) easier than younger cows, because they are not trying to grow. Ken Olson, PhD, Extension Beef Specialist, South Dakota State University, says protein supplementation is important, especially when talking about spring-calving herds. “Those cows will possibly need supplement during winter if they are utilizing low quality forage sources. They may be grazing winter range or utilizing crop residues, or baled straw residues--feedstuffs that are deficient in nutrients,” he says. “In this situation we usually think of the first limiting nutrient as protein, simply because the ruminant needs protein for digestion of forage. If the cow doesn’t have enough protein to create a proper environment for the rumen microbes, she can’t digest the fiber in that low-quality forage to extract the energy value that is tied up in it. We are actually meeting the requirement of the gut bugs first, so they can digest the feed and meet the requirements of the cow,” says Olson. “We feed the rumen bugs, and that grows more rumen bugs. After they digest the fiber and pass on into the small intestine, the rumen bugs also become supplemental protein for the cow. It’s a very efficient system,” he explains. This is why the first thing we talk about for supplementing pregnant cows in winter is protein, because of that chain reaction. “This meets the cow’s needs and helps her maintain body condition during the time she’s pregnant and after calving. We need her in good body condition by spring so she has the nutritional status to lactate and start cycling again, and get pregnant at the beginning of the next breeding season,” he says. “That’s been the traditional view. It’s all about setting the cow up so we can keep her healthy through winter and get her pregnant again. We also know we are having an effect on the fetus during her pregnancy, and this is a hot topic in research right now. One of the things we’ve traditionally known, is that if we are providing supplemental protein to the cow we are setting her up to provide better colostrum, more milk and better quality milk. So we help the calf get off to a good start right after it’s born,” says Olson. “If we feed the cow well, we reduce calving difficulty. The cow is healthier and stronger, and can push better. She can get the calf out quicker (less stress on the calf, not having to endure
34
D E C E M B E R 2020
pressure of extended time in the birth canal) and this helps get the calf up and going quicker. If the cow is strong, we have fewer weak calves at birth,” he says. “These are all things we’ve known for a long time. The new thing we’re learning about are part is fetal programming. We are finding out that how we feed the cow when she is pregnant affects the development and genetic potential of that fetus, changing how it performs after it is born—and apparently for the rest of its life. We know that in calves that go to the feedlot, it changes their feedlot performance. We can improve their immune system, and also change their carcass composition.” There is a lot yet to be learned about that. “There is a limited amount of data so far, that tells us we do change it. The patterns on how we change it, and how to actually manage this for the best possible outcome, still need more study,” says Olson. “At some levels we get one outcome, and at other levels of restriction we see different outcomes. When (which stage of gestation, whether early, mid or late gestation) the restriction occurs appears to have tremendous importance. At different points in the development of that fetus, different things are being developed (heart and lungs, immune system, various body tissues). Mid-gestation seems to be very important for muscle fiber development, for instance. Different times seem important for fat cell development.” Thus how we feed the cow may change things like yield and marbling in the ultimate carcass from her calf. “This is all affected by how that fetus is developing. So now people realize we need to have a reasonable plane of nutrition all the way through pregnancy,” he says. “There is a lot of research going on, all over the country, addressing this topic. Studies are looking at what fetal programming does to the calf, and also in terms of replacement heifers. We know from the work that Dr. Rick Funston has done at the University of Nebraska, that nutrient restriction of the dam in the winter can have negative effects on the fetus in terms of when that heifer reaches puberty and how fertile she is, etc. We are trying to learn the effects of restriction—in terms of how great was the restriction and when did it happen,” says Olson. There is a lot to be learned, and it may change the way we feed cows in the winter. Many ranchers need to be able to utilize as much low quality forage as possible—such as being able to leave cows out grazing as long as possible without having to feed hay. So we need to figure out the best ways to supplement the cows so they can continue to graze low-quality forages, and not compromise their unborn calves.
CHAROLAIS JOURNAL
“We may learn to be more strategic in when we supplement, and how much. In the past our recommendations were some sort of minimal supplementation, or if cows came in from range or pasture in the fall in really good body condition we felt we could under-supplement them, knowing that they can utilize their own excess body reserves. Now we are realizing that this may work in terms of getting the cow through the winter and having her still be fertile for the next breeding season, but we don’t know what that means for the fetus. So now we need to reconsider and figure out some sort of strategic supplementation that still minimizes the cost of doing it and overcomes any negative issues in fetal programming,” Olson explains. This is still a work in progress, and there is a lot more to learn. “Just when we think we have it all figured out, we come up with a new wrinkle like this, and it gives us a lot more to think about,” he says. We also need to figure out our goals for these animals and whether or not we are meeting those goals. These goals may differ, depending on whether the cattle are in lush grass pastures on an eastern or Midwestern farm or running on thousands of acres of public rangeland in Nevada during winter.
“If cattle are on desert range in Nevada, the rancher may have limited ability to do much about some of these things. But if you are 5 miles down the road from an ethanol plant and have easy access to distillers grains, your goals and options become quite a bit different,” says Olson. And sometimes you can be innovative and realize there’s an option you hadn’t considered before. Protein supplement can be provided by alfalfa hay, distillers grains, cubes/cake, lick tubs, blocks, etc. What a person uses will usually depend on cost, freight, feasibility of feeding a particular supplement in their own unique situation. “The folks who are thinking outside the box, looking for ways to do something to tweak their own system to make it better, are the ones who can make it work,” he says. A person might be able to utilize part of an idea here or there, that might work even though it’s not a typical way to do it. Learning more about the protein needs of the cow, and how this fits into the whole picture of the way her calf will develop and how it will perform in the future can help us as we make our future management plans.
“The folks who are thinking outside the box, looking for ways to do something to tweak their own system to make it better, are the ones who can make it work,” he says. CHAROLAIS JOURNAL
