VIEWPOINT

CHAROLAIS How did we get here?

Share and Collaborate

More often than not, reflection is an overused term. Companies spend millions reflecting on past performance hoping to find a “silver bullet” that makes them more profitable or solves internal problems. All too often, corporate board room discussions translate into shiny media releases, but little action. Change is slow or not at all. Livestock production and specifically, beef cattle production, is vastly different. Family-owned cattle operations typically have a committee of one or two. The two-person committee consists of husband and wife. Hopefully, the next generation is home or planning to return to take over the operation in the future. The two-person board of directors (BOD) are the human resources department, accounting, benefits counselor, and risk management. In a family-owned farm or ranch, the same folks are responsible for every single decision ultimately controlling the success or failure of the family assets.

high quality beef. We arrived at this point in our collective beef industry history through a willingness to share and collaborate. Family-owned decision makers were willing to volunteer their time and experiences by serving on county, state, regional and national boards. Vast geographic differences, alone, mean this industry isn’t a “one size fits all” widget business. Beef producers have been willing to serve on the board of directors in their respective breed associations and are challenged regularly with decisions that move the breed forward. Judging from the overall global consumer acceptance of beef, the success of producers to breed, feed and market high quality beef is unmatched. As most of you know by now, I am retiring at the end of this year and my tenure as your executive vice president will come to a close. Dr. Clint Rusk is now on board as your new executive vice president. The success we have achieved over the last two decades is a direct result of your willingness to participate and

The future for the Charolais breed is bright. AICA is financially sound. Charolais and Charolaisinfluenced cattle are widely accepted across all production sectors. The supply-demand market is recovering from, arguably, the greatest test in our history and proving once again, it works. I ask you to consider the progress AICA and the Charolais breed has made in the past two decades and recognize this could not have been possible without your support. These fearless decision makers operate in a supply-demand world where those sectors up the supply chain let you know whether your product has a place in the market and its value. Weather, geopolitical events, public health crises and wildfires can abruptly interrupt normal markets and create extraordinary volatility, none of which the two-person BOD has control over. As beef producers at the beginning of the supply chain, we have infinite control over the quality and consistency of the product since it begins in our pastures. Producers make decisions about breed preference, phenotype, nutrition, herd health and a host of other decisions that affect performance, quality and ultimately value. Today, seedstock breeders can supply bulls to the commercial sector with genetic predictability unfathomable a decade ago. Progressive commercial cow-calf producers with the risk tolerance to do so, retain ownership and have options to market their finished cattle on a grid that pay healthy premiums for greater yield, USDA Choice and Prime. How did we get here? Cattle are produced in every state in America and are largely responsible for supplying the world with

support positive change and progress in AICA. The beef industry will always be challenged to change. Producing more with less, sustainability, quality, methane reduction and affordability are legitimate challenges we have the capacity to improve. It has been incredibly rewarding for me personally to know that, regardless of the challenge, Charolais breeders have been willing to step up, accept the challenges and collectively make decisions that result in progress. The future for the Charolais breed is bright. AICA is financially sound. Charolais and Charolais-influenced cattle are widely accepted across all production sectors. The supplydemand market is recovering from, arguably, the greatest test in our history and proving once again, it works. I ask you to consider the progress AICA and the Charolais breed has made in the past two decades and recognize this could not have been possible without your support. If you will lend your support to Clint Rusk as willingly as you have supported me, the breed will continue to make progress and compete in the industry. I leave with extraordinary gratitude for your support.

Obituary

Calder was born on October 3, 1993, in Huron, SD, to Jeff and Jody (Wienk) Eschenbaum. He graduated from Lake Preston High School in 2012, and went on to graduate from South Dakota State University in 2016 with a Bachelors degree in Construction Management. After college, Calder moved to Chicago, IL, to work with a construction management firm. The firm later moved him to Detroit, MI, before returning home to Lake Preston, SD in February 2019, where he worked construction with Keith Lee. He later moved to Rapid City, SD in November 2020, where he worked as a finishing carpenter on beautiful homes and cabins in the Black Hills. Calder was an active individual whose coordination and natural abilities made him an extremely gifted basketball and football player, State Champion Triple Jumper, slalom skier, drummer and artist. Calder had a brilliant mind. Because he was so humble, most people never knew he scored a 32 on his ACT’s and was usually the most intelligent person in the room. He was a deep thinker that didn’t care about social status, money, power, possessions or what anybody thought of him. Calder cared about truth, justice, purpose and family. His quest to read, research, and learn more about himself and the Universe led him to a faith and unshakable conviction in GOD that most could only hope to aspire to. Calder wasn’t afraid to ask himself the deepest questions plaguing mankind and debate his thoughts for hours; he didn’t care about what people thought about his answers and truly felt that these conversations might plant a seed in that person that might help them find answers later in their own personal journey. At 28 years old, Calder was a true minimalist with worldly possessions and well beyond his years in wisdom and belief. Calder loved working with his hands and spending time in nature admiring God’s handy work. He enjoyed hiking in the Black Hills, biking, cliff jumping, as well as spending time at the lake. He loved more than anything, spending time with his friends and family, particularly his nieces and nephew. Calder will always be remembered as a giver, he spent countless hours using his talents to help others. Most all of the work on Ty’s house, projects on the farm and projects for others took up a great deal of his free time. Calder is survived by his parents, Jeff and Jody of Lake Preston, SD; three brothers: Sterling (Courtney) of Lake Preston, SD, Ty of Lake Poinsett, SD, and Stetson of Lake Preston, SD; his grandparents: Arnold and Carol Wienk of Brookings, SD, and Bobby Eschenbaum of Miller, SD; and his nephew and nieces: Ryker, Landry, and Laramie Eschenbaum. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Duane Eschenbaum, and Autumn Jungwirth. by several other relatives, his brotherhood at the Fire Station and many friends and community members, whose lives he touched. In death, Tim rejoins his grandpa, Jim Paper; paternal grandparents and his aunt, Vicki Butler.

Dr. Richard Clark, Doc was born May 26, 1944 and was raised in Madison, TN. After graduating his home town high school, he joined the National Guard where he served many years, even after his private practice was established. Doc obtained his Doctor of Medicine Degree through the University of Tennessee, Memphis Tennessee in 1969. His internship was through the University of Tennessee Research Center in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1970. It was here that Doc realized he was exactly in the profession he was meant to be. He often recalled one of his fondest memories as a resident at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital, of a 3 year old abandoned little boy with severe lymphoma. He, along with other residents, took turns caring for this child, often rocking and comforting him throughout the nights. He was American Board Certified Family Practice through 1984. After making the decision to move to East Tennessee, Doc began his career working under the guidance and mentorship of Dr. William Smith in his family practice in Tazewell, TN in 1970. Here he learned not only medical practices but also the community and it’s people before deciding in 1971 to open his own practice, which he did until his retirement in 2013. Doc served as Chief of Staff of Claiborne County Medical Center from 2012-2019, he was an Active Staff Member from 1970-2019 at Claiborne Medical Center. He contributed to his community by serving at Servolution (Free Clinic) from 2013-2019, and DeBusk College Osteopathic Medicine Adjunct Faculty – Preceptor for medical students. Doc served as a board member on Claiborne Health Department and Cumberland Mountain Industries. Another absolute love of Doc’s was his cattle herd and Volunteer Charolais Farms. He was an active registered Charolais Breeder, which led to his leadership role in the American and National Charolais Associations and also the Tennessee Charolais Association as president and treasurer for many years. He made many life-long friends, too many to list, while in these associations. Dr. Clark accepted Christ at a young age and was actively involved in the church as a pianist and vocalist all of his life. He currently attended Midway Baptist Church, where he played an active role in music and loved each and every one of his church family. Doc is preceded in death by his beloved mother, Pauline and father, Paul Clark, brother, Harold Clark and nephew, Adrian Clark all of Madison TN. Richard is survived by nieces, Gloria Myrick and Sandy Clark, great niece, Ashton and great nephew, Taylor Myrick and sister-in-law Pat Clark all of Whitehouse, TN. Upon moving to Claiborne County, Doc was embraced and welcomed into the Meyers’ Family as part of their own. Here he leaves behind his loving, Godson and wife Randell W Meyers, Jr and Lisa. Special grandson and wife, Randell ‘Winston’ Meyers, III and Shasta. Beloved great granddaughters Zoey, Chloe, Braeleigh and Paislee Meyers all of Tazewell, TN. Also special family members Randell W Meyers, Sr., Darlyndia Meyers, Jacqueline (Billy) Daniels and family, Glenna (Jack) Bunch

Obituary

Kyle Schill, 45, passed away on Tuesday, October 12, 2021. Kyle was born on October 24th, 1975 to Donald Fred Schill and Mary Jane Schill in Houston, Texas. As a child he often spent his weekends and summers at his grandparents’ ranch in Donie, Texas. The family later moved to Donie to help run the family ranch, SW&S Cattle Company, where they raised and showed Charolais cattle. Kyle graduated from Groesbeck High School in 1994 and then attended Trinity Valley College earning a degree in Ranch Management. In 2005, Kyle met his wife, Shay, and they were united in marriage on February 18, 2006. Together they created a life in Robinson, Texas with their four beautiful children: Taylen, Laken, Finley and Channing. Kyle was a devoted husband, a loving father, son, brother, uncle and a loyal friend to all. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching football and old westerns; however, his absolute favorite pastime other than being at his kids’ events was life at the ranch and sharing it with his children. Kyle was employed by RDO Equipment Company in Hewitt, Texas, for the past 15 years, where he was in his element of never meeting a stranger and working on a “heck-of a deal”. He made lifelong friends not only with his colleagues, but with the customers he served.

WINTER CARE OF THE BULL BATTERY Heather Smith Thomas

Bulls need as much care through winter as the cow herd, to make sure bulls are healthy and in top shape for the next breeding season. Bull management will vary with each operation, partly depending on facilities available for keeping bulls separate from the cows. Brett DeBruycker (DeBruycker Charolais, Dutton, Montana) says that if a person is able to bring the first-year bulls back in after breeding season and group them separate from the older bulls, it’s easier to give those young ones better feed and care for a while. “Then you can have them in decent shape for going into winter,” he says. “On our operation we can’t always do that because of space constraints, but we try to separate them if we can. Many commercial producers have the same problem; if they only have one place to put the bulls, they are stuck with that. Still, it is important to get the young bulls into better condition after their first breeding season, to give them more longevity in their service life,” he explains. Otherwise some of them won’t be in good shape going into winter; the older bulls hog the hay line and beat up on the younger ones. “When it’s time to semen check and put the bulls back out with cows, those young bulls won’t be in the condition they need to be in order to pass a fertility test or get out and breed a lot of cows,” says DeBruycker. “It varies from year to year but we try to have a large enough area (if we need to have all the bulls together) with good fall pasture, so the young bulls don’t have to be grouped up or compete with the older ones.” Having them in a big pasture is healthiest for them, with room for exercise. “In the harshest part of winter we generally have them in a smaller area, but it still is big enough to give them room to stay away from one another and have adequate exercise,” he says. Brian Driscoll (Driscoll Cattle Company, a Charolais

seedstock and commercial operation in central South Dakota) says body condition is one of the biggest concerns. “When bulls get thin in winter, this is when you might have more trouble with bulls getting scrotal frostbite. We’ve had stretches of weather where it’s been well below zero for 10 days at a time. You have to keep them adequately fed in cold weather (to generate enough body heat to keep warm), and keep them healthy,” he says. “Our young developing bulls are always well bedded, and have adequate feed, because they are still growing.” The older bulls are the ones most risk for scrotal frostbite because they tend to have larger, more pendulous scrotums—less able to pull the testicles up against the body for warmth. “Today we don’t see as many bulls freeze up in winter as in the past, however. This is probably due to selection. Everyone has worked hard in the past 30 to 40 years on bull selection, to have bulls that can handle winter better. Different regions require different types of cattle, but in cold climates people have selected for bulls with tighter scrotums, and they are less likely to suffer frostbite,” says Driscoll. Breeder have also selected for feed efficiency, so the cattle can hold body condition better in cold weather. Yearling bulls that were out with cows doing their job usually don’t weigh as much when you bring them home as they did when you turned them out. When they comes back in they may need extra feed, which is easier to do if they are separate from the older bulls. “Even the two year olds will probably do better through winter if they are separate from the older bulls. You don’t want to overdo the feed, however. Some people overdo the corn if their bulls come in thin, trying to put weight back on them too quickly. This can ruin their feet and maybe lead to acidosis and other problems,” says Driscoll. You want bulls in good condition but not overly fat. “Consistent nutrition is what they need, and you can’t put

CHAROLAIS JOURNAL

300 pounds back on in a few weeks. They need a constant level of nutrition that keeps them healthy and in good shape. You don’t want bulls fat, or they won’t be athletic enough to get around.” Too much fat in the scrotum will also interfere with fertility. Pecking order problems can occur when you have a lot of bulls together. “If they start picking on one, the more bulls you have in a pen or pasture, the harder it is on the one that’s getting picked on. It may not be the same one every day, but it seems like when one starts getting picked on, the others gang up on him, and this can be pretty hard on young bulls,” says Driscoll. Good facilities and fences are crucial. Bulls can be hard on fences when they start fighting. “They don’t care if it’s barbed-wire, panels or guard rails; they will bounce off it or push each other into it. It takes good fence to keep them contained, especially in the spring when they think they need to be out with the cows; they can go through just about anything. A lot of ranchers in this area, after they sell their calves they put their bulls in the calf lots, and that’s where the bulls stay until they turn them out the next spring. It takes a really good corral fence to keep them in. Electric fence sometimes help, when the bulls respect it.” This takes a training program, however, since electric fence is mainly a psychological deterrent. “If you get bulls trained to respect electric fence, when they grow up with it and learn about it at a young age, they do pretty well with it. But if bulls start fighting they may forget about the fence. Their minds are not on the fence, and they may go through it, whether it’s electric or not,” he says. “We try to keep a good electric fence around ours, but sometimes they go through a fence,” says DeBruycker. “We run our herd bull battery and our cows just like a commercial operation would. They have to rough it sometimes; they are not pampered or babied, but we take care of them in a positive manner,” he says. “If we have to use a small area, due to pasture concerns or numbers, I try to get the young bulls sorted off into their own group. If necessary—depending on the situation—we might put lick tubs out for the young bulls. If they are in tough shape, a person could also feed some cake for a month or two and pick them up a bit,” he says. “We’ve done all of those things, and we don’t always get it done right, but we try! There’s nothing worse than having a $10,000 to $20,000 bull standing out there, after his first year of service, looking like the bulls that were only bringing

$2500! It pays to take care of those bulls.” They are a big investment and you want to keep them functional as long as possible. If you were buying an expensive piece of machinery you would maintain it properly, so it will last, and not break down. The same is true with bulls. “You service your tractors, swathers and balers, and you need to treat your bull battery the same way. They are your new genetics; they are what will be making your calf crop for the next several years, and hopefully keeping your ranch profitable. You want to take good care of those bulls,” says DeBruycker. If winter weather is severe, it pays to have windbreaks for bulls. “We make sure that they have good protection in a pasture with trees. If they are in a pasture with no tree protection, we make sure they have windbreaks. We are also liberal with the amount of straw we put out for bedding.” Then the bulls are not lying on frozen ground or in snow. If they can be out of the wind, with good bedding, they are much less likely to suffer scrotal frostbite. “In winter when feeding hay, I find it helpful to spread the hay out in a longer line, depending on the number of bulls. If you simply dump it out in a few spots in one area, the older bulls will pick on the younger ones. They not only keep them away from the feed, but may also beat up on them. If the hay is spread out, it helps minimize risk for injuries. If you always make the hay line longer than you think is necessary, the bulls can spread out better,” DeBruycker says. There’s always some place that the low-onthe-pecking-order bulls can find a place to eat. Health care includes keeping bulls properly vaccinated and dewormed. “We make sure the bulls are dewormed at appropriate times, with a pour-on. Rarely, we may use an injectable product. Every spring we give bulls booster vaccinations, including a vaccination for foot rot,” he says. All cattle are vulnerable to foot rot, but bulls seem a little more prone to this problem because of their weight (more stress on their feet) and the amount of traveling and fighting they do. If footing is wet and boggy or abrasive and rocky, any nicks and scrapes can open the way for this infection to get started. “Regarding all the other vaccinations, we make sure bulls are vaccinated as well as possible when they are young. We vaccinate against just about everything. We find that they stay healthy later in life, with strong immunities. We believe in science and technology, and the value of vaccination, especially when these animals are young.”
