CHAROLAIS

“It ain’t bragging if you really done it!” —Dizzy Dean

I

t’s hard to believe we’re about to plan for the holidays, turn the page on the calendar and head out to showcase the beef industry across the country at national livestock shows, beginning with the National Western. Cattle producers are readying for spring calving and hoping for Mother Nature’s reprieve sparing cattle country from another horrid winter. This year has been a challenge for beef producers. Even though fundamentals are bullish in many ways, the cash market has continued to swing wildly. Those producers with some diversity have more leverage to manage risks.

interviews and produced videos from New York to Nebraska. We interviewed an organic producer selling home raised Charolais beef direct to Whole Foods, supplying stores along the Eastern Seaboard. We interviewed the manager of a large cattle feeding operation with locations in two states that feed, and prefer, Charolais-influenced feeder cattle. We interviewed a leading beef consultant in one of the leading agricultural research entities, working with commercial cow-calf producers marketing valueadded calves. Then, we looked at AICA genetic trend data that documents

After discussions, the consensus among the committee was there may not be a message that better defines Charolais genetics and Charolais’ influence across all sectors of beef production, than more pounds, more profit. One of the primary roles of a modern breed association today is communicating an overarching message to represent the greatest benefits of using the breed. A few decades ago, in the absence of data, promotion was mostly “blue sky.” Data was anecdotal. Once breeds began to incorporate expected progeny differences (EPDs), change happened. It didn’t happen without controversy and consternation. But it happened and beef breeds across America began to make sustained, documented and measurable genetic improvements. Seedstock producers have never looked back! Today, seedstock and commercial cow-calf producers have access to an extraordinary suite of scientific tools that enable them to make genetic change in any direction. Artificial insemination and embryo transfer have fast tracked change. Genomic enhanced EPDs have changed the fast track to warp speed. The resulting data we can mine from the AICA database have changed “blue sky” marketing to reliable and factual information. Every two years, we are challenged to develop new advertising messages and breed promotion. The marketing committee discusses future messaging, the process and timeline for moving forward. Then we began developing creative to support the new message. During the discussion phase, the committee unanimously made the decision to, in effect, use previous messaging. Why? We began similar messaging four years ago. We conducted

increases of 15 pounds in yearling weight and 6.3 pounds of carcass weight in the last decade along with similar trends in ribeye and marbling. After discussions, the consensus among the committee was there may not be a message that better defines Charolais genetics and Charolais’ influence across all sectors of beef production, than more pounds, more profit. The show ring is often criticized for trends that are not representative of real world phenotype. Many Charolais and Charolais-cross steers and heifers have found the winner’s circle across the country in 2019. Arguably and accurately, these winners are very representative of the market signals being sent up and down the supply chain. Cow-calf producers selling calves at market or retaining ownership make money with more pounds. Cattle feeders and packers make money with more pounds of quality beef. Charolais cattle do it! A quote from baseball Hall of Fame pitcher and a memorable baseball commentator, Dizzy Dean, says it best, “It ain’t bragging if you really done it!” More pounds, more profit is the most accurate description of Charolais influence in the commercial sector and we have the documentation to support the statement. So, it ain’t bragging. We’ve done it.

2020 Dues Reminder

Reminders were mailed in November. Active members – $100; junior member – $25. Junior member Charolais Journal subscriptions are an additional $25. Be sure to update all contact information including e-mails and websites. If dues are not renewed for 2020, online passwords will not work. Year letter for 2020 is H.

The AICA is the official registry for Charolais and Charbray cattle in the United States. Charolais cattle were first brought to the U.S. in 1936. In 1957, the American Charolais Breeders Association and the International Charolais Breeders Association merged forming the present AICA. Membership in the AICA is obtainable when the applicant has ownership in at least one animal, and has paid the initial membership fee of $125. AICA annual dues are $100.

Record your 2020 born calves using AICA’s online system. Add the data as the calves are born; continue to update the records as you add weaning and yearling data. Register the calves at any time by adding their name. 50K Technology at a Lower Price For Members

AICA has a genomic test at a lower price that allows wider use of genomic testing across the breed. The GGP BOV50K test will be available for purchase through AICA for a fee of $25, if you would like to use hair samples the fee is $30. This test includes parentage. AICA continues to offer the horned/polled test at $45. Expedited Registration Work

If an animal needs to be registered with in a day or two. A rush fee of $50 will be added to work. Once the animal is registered you can pull it up online to view the registration number. The new certificate will be mailed out the following day. We also offer Fed-Ex mailing for additional $50. AICA’s on-line system can answer many questions.

Log in with your breeder number and password: Get a copy of a certificate by holding your cursor on the “My Reports” tab and click into “Copy Certificate.” This is a quick way to get a copy of a paper. Duplicates of the original paper must be requested in writing 18  

Under the “tools” tab, you will find a new “Data Export” button. Beauty in a Cattleman’s Christmas

CHAROLAIS JOURNAL

G

littery, unscathed blankets of snow cover the earth. Lights cast a warm, serene glow upon anything within their rays’ reach. Bright stars glow in a clear sky, illuminating a vast landscape. The low sounds of livestock and varied sounds of night animals harmonize with the beautiful silence. The otherwise common winter scenes occasionally combine to create one of the most magical, mystical Christmas calms I can imagine. To me, the idyllic scene epitomizes the purity, complexity, and meaning of the Christmas season. I feel stronger in faith and more peaceful in heart when I can witness such special moments. Of course, as cattlemen and women, we know the reality behind the romantic image of a country Christmas. The blankets of snow mean extra work to keep cattle well-fed and protected. Glowing lights often mean working outdoors after dark to catch up, keep up, or fix up. Bright, clear skies indicate bitter cold night temps. Cattle lowing cause a momentary heart rate increase as we assess the reason for their sound—are they out; bothered by a coyote; restless? Perhaps, the reason I cherish the quiet calm of a country Christmas evening is because Christmas for us, and most likely you, doesn’t include exotic holiday vacations or days inside filled with hot cocoa, a warm fire, and a good book. Our Christmas celebrations hinge on tightly held traditions and how long the weather reasonably allows us to be away from the ranch. If we aren’t careful, the special magic of the Christmas season can get lost in the reality of daily chores and endless lists. Though we try, our kids know we will be the last ones to church on Christmas Eve because of a “quick five-minute project”. They know we will marvel at Santa’s gifts, take turns opening family presents, and enjoy a special Christmas morning breakfast. Then, we will hustle through chores all the while praying we aren’t too late for Christmas lunch with family…either near or far depending on the weather.

At the same time, we value Christmas traditions like letting the kids decorate the tree, attending Christmas Eve church services with family, and spending time with our loved ones. We cherish the perfectly romantic scenes of glittery snow, bright lights, and serene calm. My husband and I try to balance the needs of our family and our business. We work to prioritize our family while balancing the workload of a cattleman’s life. Winston Churchill once said, ““Christmas is a season not only of rejoicing but of reflection.” I agree with the former prime minister. A new year represents a fresh start. It’s about looking ahead, but the Christmas season provides us a ripe opportunity to reflect. Is there still magic in the headache and hassle of our businesses? Have we been able to maintain our passion for an often-thankless calling? Was the journey of the past year right for the journey ahead? Though we must each answer those questions for ourselves, I believe it’s important to remember our strength as a collective. Together, we can have a unified voice. We have the power to perpetuate the beautifully romantic notions of a cattleman’s life to the public all the while humanizing our work for greater understanding. I’m not oblivious to the raw challenges we face in this industry. Our family endures and perseveres right alongside yours. Yet, I’m acutely aware of the beauty, opportunity, and necessity in what we do. A Cattleman’s Christmas is my favorite kind, and I’m not sure we’d know how to act if Christmas (or any other occasion) wasn’t influenced by cows. As you celebrate in the coming days and weeks, I pray you take time to appreciate the romance, nostalgia, and promise in the Christmas season! After all, as W.T. Ellis once said, “It is Christmas in the heart that puts Christmas in the air.”

H

ey y’all! My name is Emily Hanson, and I’m from the small town of Bowie, Texas. I am currently a senior at Bowie High School while also doing dual credit courses at North Central Texas College. I have been a part of the American International Junior Charolais Association for three years. I am currently serving as an At-Large director on the Junior Board. I also serve as Vice President for the Bowie FFA Chapter, Queen for the Texas Junior Chianina Association, and secretary for the Bowie 4-H Club. Showing cattle has been a big part of my life, and I wouldn’t want to be a part of any other association!

Q: What attracts you to the Charolais breed? A: What attracts me to the Charolais breed is

the welcoming people. Walking into the barn and seeing all of the welcoming Charolais breeders is one of the best things about being a part of this amazing breed.

Q:

Where was your first Junior National and what was your favorite memory from it?

A: My first Junior National was in Des Moines, Iowa. My

favorite memory would have to be walking all around the grounds with Peggy DeMoss and Sydney Howell looking for the building where the banquet was being held. We walked the complete opposite direction looking for the building. Finally we asked for directions and went the correct way.

Q: Who inspired you to become a Junior Board member?

A: The family that encouraged me to apply was Peggy and Jerry DeMoss. Peggy and Jerry have been in my life for four years and have always pushed me to do amazing things. They have always been a helping hand throughout my show career, and I cannot thank them enough! Being on the board has been the best decision that I have made, and wouldn’t trade being on the board for anything. Q: What are your hobbies or other interests? A: One of my hobbies outside of the Charolais breed

would be doing CDEs and LDEs in FFA. CDE’s are career development events and LDE’s are leadership development events. One of the CDEs that I am a part of is Radio team. For Radio team, we must pick an agricultural topic and have a “radio” show over it.

Q:

What is your favorite memory from Junior National?

A: My favorite memory from Junior National was the

hypnotist show this past summer. Watching everyone on stage doing funny things like forgetting their name and acting like a race car driver was so funny. I also loved how the people in the audience got to participate and still have a good time even though they didn’t get to be hypnotized.

Q: What is your favorite Junior National contest? Q: What accomplishment are you most proud of? A: My favorite Junior National contest is Quiz Bowl. Whether you know the answer or not it is always fun A: The accomplishment that I am most proud of is

competing with your teammates and learning new things being on the board. Being on the national board is a great accomplishment that I thought I would never be able to do. about cattle and the Charolais breed. Whenever I am asked my answer will always be, being a Q: What are your plans after graduating high school? part of the AIJCA board.

A: Once I graduate high school, I plan on attending

Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches, Texas. I plan on going to college to become a Radiology Tech.

Obituary

Obituary

Mr. Wallace Burton Campbell, age 79 years, of Hartsburg, Mo. passed away Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at Heisinger Bluffs surrounded by his family. Wally was born on January 13, 1940 in Lebanon, Mo. a son of Bennie Burton and Dorcas Louise (Ferguson) Campbell. He was married on December 4, 1960 at Hamlin Memorial Baptist Church in Springfield, Mo. to Barbara Jean Freeman. Wally graduated from Alton High School and received his Associate’s degree in 1958 from Southwest Baptist College. He furthered his education at Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield and received his Bachelor’s degree in 1961. Wally was employed for over 37 years with the Missouri Department of Transportation in Jefferson City. He worked with traffic throughout his career and retired in 2000. Wally was also a full-time cattle farmer during these years and spent many morning and nights on the family farm. He was an active member and deacon at Concord Baptist Church. He also enjoyed sharing his knowledge with the youth at the church as a Royal Ambassadors and Sunday school teacher. Wally volunteered his time as a crew chief supervisor with the World Changers Program, was a member of the Concord Baptist Association’s Building Team and worked with the Missouri Baptist Disaster Relief. He found comfort in serving and helping others. Wally loved spending time with his family, especially if it meant being around his kids and grandkids. It was an added bonus if that time was spent on the farm or working cattle. His love of family meant that he always put them first in his life. He supported them in all of their passions and encouraged them through all their successes and failures. Survivors include: his loving wife of 58 years, Barbara Campbell; four children, Bruce Campbell of Hartsburg, Mo., Diann Rivera (Drew) of Jefferson City, Mo., Scott Campbell (Jill) of Hartsburg, Mo. and Brian Campbell (Janelle) of Iberia, Mo.; one sister, Lois Marie Akers (Bill) of Evansville, In.; one brother, James Campbell of Cheyenne, Wy.; eleven grandchildren, Brittney Banks, Whitney Armour (Kevin), Kristin Campbell, Jennifer Pyatt (Jesse), Jared Rivera (Naomi), Jason Rivera (Alex), Caitlin Campbell (fiancé Woodcender Beauplan), Cody Campbell (Kaley), Abby Claypool (Dusty), Tessa Campbell and Michelle Campbell; and two greatgrandchildren, Lydia Armour and Little Bit Rivera. He was preceded in death by his parents and numerous aunts and uncles. A visitation followed by a memorial serveice was held at Concord Baptist Church on Sunday, October 6, 2019.

Robert Eugene Barnard, 85, died at home on Sunday, October 27, 2019, surrounded by family. He had been battling brain cancer since late spring. He was born June 24, 1934, in Osceola, Clarke County, Iowa. He married Alice Slagle on June 30, 1962, in Wichita, Kansas. He loved his family and was very proud of his children and grandchildren; daughter Greer Barnard and grandchildren Isaac Pressgrove and Miranda Pressgrove; son Crandall Ross Barnard (Natalie); and grandchildren Gabe Barnard and Griffin Barnard. All survive. He attended college at Iowa State, entered the Army and later graduated from Northwest Missouri State University with a B.S. in Agriculture. He worked for American Family Insurance Company for forty years, retiring to pursue his dream of raising Charolais cattle. Over the years, he was active in United Way, Rolling Hills Library Board of Trustees, University of Missouri Extension Council of Buchanan County and the Missouri Charolais Breeders Association. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ross and Mary Barnard. Additional survivors include sisters Ellen (Harry) Carter and Zina (Bill) Josephs; nephews Geoff Carter and Steve Carter, niece Emily Josephs, and extended family. A Celebration of Life will be scheduled in St. Joseph at a later date. Hotel Headquarters for Upcoming National Roll of Excellence (ROE) Events
