J. Neil Orth, Executive Vice President

VIEWPOINT

CHAROLAIS

No good reason to stop progress. AICA will continue due diligence

We have just concluded one of the most exciting, stressful, rewarding and

relevant few weeks of the year. The fall Board of Directors meetings, The American Royal shows and related Charolais events are in the books for the year. Following on the heels of the American Royal is the ever exciting North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) and the National Charolais Show and Sale. We’ll soon be thrust into the Holiday Season, then on to 2016 and the National Western Stock Show, Fort Worth Stock Show, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, San Antonio Livestock Show, state and regional junior livestock events, then right square in the middle of another spring sale season. Could be an age thing. Then again, it could be that we all just have our plates a bit more fully loaded with work, which typically equates to

committee, AICA is financially stable. In fact, the board of directors recently voted to earmark additional funds to assist in Association and breed marketing efforts. A sub-committee has been formed and will due diligence and make recommendations back to the full committee. The sub-committee will look at the obvious as well as the notso-obvious to determine if investing additional funds can provide a measured return and enhance the Charolais footprint across the beef industry. A new national advertising campaign was approved during the fall board meetings. AICA staff are in the process of making downloadable files available for use in your own personal promotional efforts in the upcoming year. The newly redesigned www.CharolaisUSA.com was launched in late October. Our web traffic is closely tracked and evaluated monthly and the expectation is to see the continued increase in visitors to the website for both

“AICA will continue to due diligence to evaluate and offer tools that provide every opportunity for Charolais producers to add value and enhance profitability..” opportunity, than ever before. These events are relevant for many reasons. The most obvious is to promote and showcase the breed. Secondly, but no less important, is the fact the cattle business and beef industry is still a people business. Our success or failure in the cattle business largely depends on our people skills to make good decisions and never forget the ultimate customers, consumers, are people. As an industry, we’ve made a million miles of improvement as the technology to make breeding decisions more objective and fact based picks up speed almost on a daily basis. The guess work and risk will never be eliminated. But, the speed at which the beef industry is moving to quantify economic production signals such as feed efficiency and end product merit is amazing. Quantifying more difficult traits such as teat, udders and feet come are closer to reality than ever before. Volatility in the commercial markets have caused tremendous heartburn among registered and commercial producers of late. Cattle feeders are bleeding red ink profusely. Yet, for the past couple of years, profitability for cow-calf producers has been historically unprecedented. AICA has experienced growth. Thanks to a fiscally responsible board of directors and finance

information and to conduct AICA business online. AICA staff does an outstanding job of pushing Charolais news, in real time, through social media. During the 47th National Show, Kaitlyn Lewis, AICA Youth Activities and Charolais Journal Ad Coordinator, kept folks interested in the NAILE events in the know. She was posting champion and reserve champion winners throughout the show. The posts were seen almost immediately by a few hundred to more than 7,500 as the show progressed. The interest in Charolais, both registered and as a strong commercial influence has never been better. As the beef industry continues to improve a structured crossbreeding system based on documented value, Charolais is the continental breed of choice. You are to be commended as seedstock producers. By using the available tools and technology to make genetic improvements in your own operations, you continue to produce beef cattle with extraordinary value throughout the food chain. AICA will continue to due diligence to evaluate and offer tools that provide every opportunity for Charolais producers to add value and enhance profitability. There’s just no good reason to stop progress.

Features of the Online Registration System

AICA’s online system has several newly enhanced features. Log in with your breeder number and password and you’ll find additional reports listed under the “My Reports” tab. The new Sire/Dam Performance Summary gives options to print lifetime records on individual animals or all active sires and or dams. You also have the option to get reports by calving year. Many other reports are available including performance reports and ultrasound reports. Ultrasound barn sheets can be generated using the report function. You have the option to print barn sheets by calving year or by individual animals. Printing quick copies of individual certificates is another useful enhancement of the “reports” function. Members use the Herd EPD reports to keep up on the most current numbers for the animals in their herd. This list can be sorted by sex and listed in several different orders. There is also the option to choose a birth date range. Under the “tools” tab, you will find a new “Data Export” button. This data export gives you the flexibility to export data on animals in your herd and use those data files in your own management packages. You can download and save the files directly to your computer in a CSV (can be opened in Excel) format. There are many options within this feature including selecting the type of animal to export and specific data. AICA using GeneSeek

The AICA is now using GeneSeek for parentage testing, contact Marilou Wegner to request a kit. The kit is specific to the animal being tested. AICA rules require AI sire and donor cows be tested if they have not been. AI Sires

AI Sires used “out of herd” must be DNA tested before calves can be registered. Check the bull’s record to make sure the DNA work has been done before submitting registration papers. AICA rules require signatures on bulls you do not own. Signatures can be submitted online, fax, mail or e-mail. AICA Mail

AICA no longer gets mail at the post office box. Please make sure all correspondence to AICA or the Charolais Journal is addressed to: 11700 NW Plaza Circle, Kansas City, Mo, 64153.

Hello Everyone! I am Teanna Simpson and I am currently

your Area 6 Director. This will be my first year on the board and I am more than excited to get started! I am from Thayer, Missouri and I am currently attending Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri. I am hoping to major in Agriculture Communications and start a career as well as continuing to grow my Charolais herd.

Q: What do you want to accomplish as a board member

Directors By Area

OK before they laughed. We went on to win grand champion that day with green shaving stains down the calves back!

Q: Who is the most important role model in your life? A: The most important role models in my life, is my whole

family. Each one of them have pushed me to succeed and try harder when I failed. I can never thank them enough for giving me all the opportunities they have.

of the AIJCA?

Q:

and now that I am finally on the board I want to be someone that those juniors look up to. I want to be a board member that is known for leadership and teamwork abilities. I want to accomplish great things as a board member but I also want to accomplish great things with my whole team.

A: My first Junior National was in Tupelo, Mississippi and

A: I have looked up to board members since I was a little girl,

Where was your first Junior National, and what was your favorite memory from it?

I was just six years old. It was one of the best experiences I could have hoped for. My favorite memory was getting put on a cook-off team as soon as we got there. What made it even better was that we won, and my competitive love for the cook-off contest started.

Q: What is your favorite Junior National Contest? If you had some advice to give to new junior A: Without a doubt, my favorite Junior National contest is Q: members what would it be, and what advice would showmanship. I am a total nervous wreck before it but the adrenaline you have the whole time showing and that feeling of accomplishment you get when you make it out of your heat is just indescribable. It is like I am in my own zone.

Q: What is your favorite thing about Junior Nationals? A: I love the connections that you make with people all

across the U.S. I have made friends from all across the country and they are some of the best friendships I have ever had. Even though I only see some of these people at Junior Nationals, we pick up right where we left off and it makes for a great week.

you give new members to become more involved?

A: My advice to a new junior member and to new members

looking to get involved is to try new things. For new junior members, I would highly recommend joining the mentor program. What an unbelievable way to get involved for the week and make a lifelong friendship. If you have never been in a contest like the cook-off or the fitting contest, I recommend it. Not only is it a great contest in general but you get the opportunity to work with junior members from your state or another, and this time instead of competing against each other you are competing with each other to reach a common goal.

Q: What are some of your future goals? A: I have always wanted to have a successful Charolais herd. Q: How did you become involved in the Charolais breed? I have slowly started working on that, but in the future I want A: I was born into the Charolais breed. My family had to have a successful cow calf operation where I sell cattle in all different places across the country. I want to be respected like many of the big operations that I look up to today but also I want to be an active member and support the Junior program like it has supported me and give back to it.

Q: What is your most embarrassing showring moment? A: This moment goes down for sure as one of the most embarrassing. I had showed a baby calf for a friend of mine at Junior Nationals, and let’s just say the “calf got me down.” We rolled over together in the show ring and both the calf and I were covered in green shavings! The ring help made sure I was

Charolais cattle when I was born, so I was born and raised with whites. I can still remember the first heifer I got to show. It was the greatest feeling to be able to carry on the tradition that my family had started and I have been hooked ever since. I just cannot imagine my life without white cattle in it or my extended Charolais family.

With great pride Chris Polzin & Keith Sturtz offer this unique opportunity for the progressive breeder! The genetic impact of SCC Ms Bud 418-1128 within the industry has not only been wide and profitable, but continues to get wider and more popular as we speak. During the recent Polzin Cattle “Leading Ladies Sale” in October, Keith Sturtz made the wise decision to purchase a one-half embryo interest in #1128 at $30,000! And why wouldn’t he? During that same sale three of her weaning age daughters sired by TR PZC Turton 0794 ET sell for $10,000, $25,000 & $29,000! That makes the top 7 full sisters sold out of #1128 average $20,285! These progeny are amazing show and brood cow prospects and as time passes this donor and her progeny will take their place alongside our breed’s greatest cow families! SCC Ms Bud 418-1128 ET will remain at Polzin Embryo Center where she has been averaging 12 sexed embryos per aspiration. The buyer of this special offering will receive an IVF cycle to the sire of their choice, with a guarantee of at least three (3) sexed pregnancies.

JCAR-RCC Outlander 595Selling ½ interest and full possession in your choice of this Denver Pen-ofLot 2E Three Bulls! These bulls have so much to offer. They are full sibs to the great “RRC-RA Daisy C311” that captured the hearts of many breeders throughout not only the Charolais breed, but other breeds as well, with Trae Simmons, Stan Clamme & Jessica Janssen finally partnering up to own her. Daisy was a twotime National Class Winner, the 45th National Reserve Junior Calf Champion and the 46th National Senior Champion. She was and has been one of the most popular Charolais heifers before, during and after every show she walked into! These bulls are full sibs to the R & R National Sale consignment selling in Louisville; RRC-RA “A Daisy If Ya Do” and another full sister JCAR Misty sold for $10,500 this past fall in the Simmons Bid Board Sale. The older RRC Huckleberry was the Grand Champion Bull this past summer at the 2015 Indiana State Fair. He won’t be a part of this Denver pen, but will be in Denver “on the hill” and will be a part of this choice. No gamble here with this herd sire selection of a virtual “outcross” pedigree into a proven successful heritage!

That’s right, your opportunity to flush the dam of these Denver herd sire prospects, Daisy, A Daisy If Ya Do, Huckleberry and Misty. There are so many viable options for this flush. This will be the first flush every sold at public auction! Her outcross genetic pedigree could be the deal for many of today’s most popular herd sire options, but if you want to stay with the proven success, R & R will provide semen to D&D Outlaw and make some more of the full sibs that you know and love. Storm has averaged 13 quality embryos per flush with conventional embryos resulting in over a 75% success rate. Again, not much guesswork here.

If you have ever had the opportunity to visit Summit Farms you would be totally impressed with this tremendous donor dam today. Even now at 13 years of age she will knock your socks off with her overall quality, easy fleshing and soundness! Charolais Journal fieldman Floyd Wampler personally selected this female out of the Deer Valley herd to go into transplant for D & S Charolais in North Carolina, after her first two natural bull calves turned in an adjusted weaning weights average of 819 lbs. In 2007 she was D&S’s consignment to the National Charolais Sale in Louisville and at $20,000 Summit Farms put her into their embryo program.

Selling Buyers Choice of One Bred Cow and One Bred Heifer

Another breeder that only lets us have a Choice of the Herd, only at Denver, once a year! Last year Legacy Ranch, Blackfoot, Idaho made this selection at $13,500 & $13,000. The year before that in 2014 Lindskov-Thiel, Isabel, South Dakota and 8 Story Charolais in Missouri made their choices at $8,000 each. The year before that Eaton Charolais and Sandmeier Charolais made selections for $7,750 and $6,750. I think you can see where this is going, these breeders are having great success with these selections. n Every cow in this herd carries the one iron brand of Hebbert Charolais. They have all been bred, born and raised on the Hebbert Ranch. This enabled them to stack generations of pedigrees with genetics selected for calving ease, disposition, total performance and structural soundness. In 2011, 2012 & 2013 Hebbert Charolais was AICA Area 4 tops in Registrations and have 40 active AICA Dams of Distinction in 2015. n

n

One of the most exciting “Choices of the Herd” in last year’s Charolais in the Rockies sale and a choice of the herd, not offered up each year. There are over 100 of these bred heifers to select from, all born in the spring of 2014. There will only be one choice of the herd sold, so don’t sit back and wait! For 50 some years Cobb Charolais has been a “closed herd” and are all “one-iron brand.” They have constantly and consistently been selecting and culling for all of the economically important traits and you will be totally impressed with the offering before you when you make your trip to Montana to make this selection. The Cobb family would like this selection to be completed by May 15, 2016, so you will get to choose from all of 1st-calf-heifer pairs!

Sells bred A.I. on 5-23-15 to LT Ledger 0332 P. Safe in calf. This is one easy heifer to look at. She was selected by the Roberts to show out of the entire set of the 2014 heifer calf crop at DeBruyckers. She is as pretty and sleek as you can make one. Only shown twice, she was named the Grand Champion AOB heifer at the 2015 Montana State Fair and then went on to be the Grand Champion Female at the NILE in Billings. Ms Equity B662 is sired by JDJ Equity Z370 who’s semen in near impossible to get and his progeny is limited! The 2015 high selling bull at DeBruyckers was sired by Equity along with several other high-sellers. His progeny are catching serious eyes in the Charolais breed. This may one of the only opportunities to aquire a carefully selected Equity daughter from the industries largest and most competitive seedstock producer in the breed. n The sellers will each reserve the rights to one successful flush at the convenience of the buyer. Sells bred A.I. on 4-27-15 to LT Ledger 0332 P. Safe in calf. When you think potential “donor” this is the kind you female you look for. Everyone that has seen her have been blown away by her sheer mass and capacity. Her rib and center dimension go on for days! They don’t get much more “cowy” than this one. She could easily fit into anyone’s donor program. As a plus, she is sired by the popular breed sire, CJC Trademark H45, one of the purebred and commercial cattlemens most favored sires. Bred to LT Ledger is the blending of two great programs! n The sellers will each reserve the rights to one successful flush at the convenience of the buyer. n n

If you value performance coupled with structural correctness in an eye appealing package, we encourage you to evaluate HINR YOU’RE IN GOOD HANDS. Here is a bull that is very complete in his makeup with a superb disposition. He’s a sound structured bull that sets down on a large circumference of bone, has plenty of muscle shape and dimension as well as being good through that front one third and is very level made. This is a bull that will add pounds and carcass quality to your herd as well as some added bone, substance, and eye appeal. He was named the 2015 Champion Charolais Bull and Reserve Champion Overall Bull on the FFA side at the Nebraska State Fair. He is backed by one of the best cow families in the Charolais breed going back to OW Miss Marion 0025! His dam and younger full brother were Cow/ Calf Pair Class Winners at the 2015 Charolais Junior Nationals. He is sired by Keys All State who has been successfully producing high quality offspring. You could use him in a purebred or commercial operation. Or how about producing those smoky clubbies that are all the hottest thing around - We believe he will be successful in whatever you choose for him. n Selling 2/3 interest and full possession. n As Nebraska Charolais breeders, we are excited that our state will be hosting the 2017 Charolais Jr. National Show & Youth Development Conference. In support of the education, skills and relationships afforded to our youth by this conference, we will be donating 10% of the proceeds of the sale of this bull.
