Forward to the 2018 Kansas City American Royal, the Charolais breed certainly took center stage during two October weekends of activity. Charolais – influenced steers placed well in an extremely competitive steer show on Saturday, October 20th. A Charolais-crossed steer walked away with Grand Champion honors. Charolais activities kicked off on Friday morning, October 26, with 21 bulls from 10 states competing in the Royal Breeders Bull Classic. Interest and excitement was evident that afternoon as the 40th National Sale averaged $12,458 with 33 buyers from 13 states making seedstock selections. Saturday morning, October 27, started with a highly competitive Junior Charolais Heifer Show – 83 heifers checked-in from AIJCA members representing 15 states. The following day, the Grand Champion Heifer was slapped Supreme Champion over 15 breeds! The 50th National Show then took center stage with 216 entries checked-in representing exhibitors for 19 states – the largest National Show in recent years! “Kansas City” an exciting week of activity for the Charolais breed and its breeders.

or many reasons, the beef business amp meter is turned up a notch or two from late fall through early spring. Thousands of cattle move through the supply chain. Seedstock auctions of all breeds consume every weekend. Bright wood shavings are spread and lights on show rings across the country are turned on and shine on every relevant breed, showcasing those phenotypic qualities breeds and breeder consider most important. From state fairs in every state in the country to the National Western in Denver, the Houston Livestock Show, Fort Worth, the American Royal in Kansas City, the North American Livestock Exposition in Louisville and youth and open shows, cattle are on display for all

thirteen major shows in twelve states. Just recently, the steer that outlasted the competition to earn Grand Champion Steer honors at the 2018 American Royal was a Char-cross calf out of a purebred Charolais cow. The steer was shown by Julia Frye from Loveland, Colorado. Again, illustrating the importance of a rural—urban relationship, the steer sold for an American Royal record price of $260,000 and was purchased by the Kemper Foundation. The Kemper Foundation has long been a strong supporter of the American Royal through generous participation in the premium auctions. For breeds with the largest industry market share, quantifiable

The fact is, every segment of the beef industry is important. If not, it would have faded from existence and only remained as a part of beef industry history. the world to see. Why? Looking back several decades, livestock shows began as both recreational and important to the business of beef. The best way to expose the largest public audience to beef improvements was through a public display, a parade of sorts. No data, no technology and the only genetic correlation was anecdotal phenotypic comparisons. Yet, cattlemen persevered. The food chain wasn’t complicated. Since the majority of Americans were rural, there was a direct connection between producer and consumer. In fact, they were one and the same. Albeit more difficult today, we simply cannot overlook the relevance and connectivity of value from birth to the consumer’s shopping basket. The year started with a sonic boom when the judged slapped Cameron Conkle’s Charolais steer to win the Houston Livestock Show. The steer was Cameron’s FFA project and sold for $410,000. For decades, the Houston Livestock Show premium auction has set the bar for philanthropy, rewarding youngsters with premiums that often provide financial support that set them up for extremely bright futures in just about any endeavor. The Houston event is a shining example of a rural-urban relationship that showcases the beef industry to more than 2.5 million visitors each year. Little did we know but Charolais success in Houston was only the beginning. As the year progressed, it was obvious Charolais cattle would have a great run in the public space of the show ring in 2018. To date, Charolais or Charolais-cross cattle have earned the traditional slap on the rump and handshake from the judge in

Livestock shows are a conduit to make sure urbanites have even a vague connection to where their food originates. Shows are destinations for many rural families, using the events as wonderful teaching opportunities to reinforce the importance of hard work, personal responsibility and animal welfare. Livestock shows provide a social environment so that even the youngest exhibitors begin friendships that become networks that become professional connections in adulthood. Last month, we discussed the marketing success of Charolais and Char-Influence cattle reported through Superior Livestock Auctions from 1995—2016. The take home message is commercial acceptance. It’s also important to acknowledge and congratulate the hundreds of families across the country that tie a promising young calf in the show barn and invest countless hours to train, groom, nourish and foster the human-animal bond, even though we know the eventual outcome. Some days it’s just important we recognize how privileged we are to call this our business.

AICA MEMBERSHIP Obituary

Walter Winkler, 69, was at home, surrounded by family as he entered eternity on October 18, 2018. A true testament to Walt’s strength and determination is that he fought multiple myeloma for the last 13 years with dignity, a smile and scarcely a complaint. Walt was born on December 15, 1948 in Reading Pennsylvania, the son of the late Josef and Erna Winkler. He was a loving husband to Karen, a devoted father to his sons, Gregory and Stephen, an engaged grandfather to Ryan, Nathaniel and Lilly. He was a friend to many. Walt was a farmer his entire life, from his first steps on the family farm in Pennsylvania, through the last 50 years on his farm in Waynesboro. He graduated from Kutztown Area High School, and then earned his Bachelor of Science in Animal Husbandry from Delaware Valley College. His journey brought him to Colonial Farms, in Virginia. Walt was a longtime member of Stuarts Draft Ruritans club, where, among his many responsibilities he was one of the organizers of the yearly Ham, Oyster, and Turkey dinners as well as the Sweet Dreams breakfasts. Walt received the distinct honor of becoming a Ruritan Forever in September 2018. He was an active member at Expo, the Virginia Charolais Association, and Calvary United Methodist Church. Walt is survived by his wife Karen, son Gregory and his wife, Niki and their three children, Ryan, Nathaniel, and Lillian; and his son Stephen and his partner Viki. He is also survived by his mother in law, “Mumzie”, brothers Gerhard (Carol), Rudy (Jean), Hermann (Brenda), sister Irmgard (Charles), as well as many nieces and nephews. John Earl Holdridge went to be with the Lord, Jesus Christ, on October 28, 2018 at his home in Odessa, Texas, after an extended illness. John was 80 years old. John was born October 24, 1938 in DeLeon, Texas. John was a longtime member of The American International Charolais Association, Odessa Chuckwagon Gang and the International and West Texas Safari Clubs. In 1962, he founded Odessa Babbitt Bearing Company in Odessa, Texas. Shortly thereafter, he started his cattle operations at OBBCO Ranch in De Leon, Texas. John Holdridge, a long-time breeder of high quality Charolais, has one of the leading herds of full-blood Charolais cattle in the U.S.A. John, through OBBCO Ranch, has been breeding full-blood Charolais for 50 years, maintaining a rich breeding foundation of proven bloodlines. OBBCO Ranch has been involved in breeding champion bloodlines from around the world,

including Balmyle Champion from England. John Holdridge was always a very hands on owner/operator and very involved with the cattle business. He always had a great love for the Charolais breed and was a staunch supporter of the Association. John’s daughter and son-in-law, Lorie and Brad Koonce, are the very capable managers of OBBCO Ranch. He is survived by his wife, 7 children and 12 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He is going to be greatly missed by all who knew him. Obituary

Donald Ross Hankins was born December 5, 1953 in Springfield, MO to Ross Hankins, Jr. and Twillia Hodges Hankins. He married Karen Neely on January 16, 1978, and was blessed with two children, Laura Dawn Hankins Gaddy and Jason Ross Hankins. He passed away at his family farm near Willard on November 3, 2018, following a brief illness. Don was preceded in death by his mother and his son-in-law, Grayson Gaddy. He is survived by his father, of Springfield, his wife of the home; his daughter, Laura and her children, Anna, Drew, and Alex Gaddy of Republic; and his son’s family, Jason, Pam, Emma, and Jessi Hankins of Republic; all of whom were his great pride and joy. Don graduated from Willard High School and briefly attended MSU before enlisting into the navy. He greatly enjoyed his time of service in the Philippines and Bermuda, but felt the need to leave the service to help on the family farm. He continued serving in the Naval Reserves for several years, and continued his education at Columbia College, earning a B.S. degree in Agriculture Education from MSU in 1986. He taught Ag Ed at Liberal, Carl Junction, Walnut Grove, Buffalo, and Willard; retiring after 20 years to farm, full time. He raised commercial cattle and registered Charolais and Braunvieh cattle. He impacted the lives of many students during and after his teaching career. He was totally devoted to his students and took them all over the nation, competing in FFA contests and livestock shows. While training his students, he would work seven days a week, long into the evening hours, traveling anywhere there was an opportunity for them to learn. He pushed them hard, but made it fun, and they loved him dearly. He was much more than just a teacher to them. He was a friend and a second dad to many. Always the teacher, Don continued impacting the lives of many by working with young people who showed cattle. He helped everyone that wanted to learn, even if they were competing against his own family. He helped his children and grandchildren earn many National Grand Champion awards for their cattle, but was also recognized for his support of other youth in the Simmental, Charolais, and Braunvieh Associations. Besides his family, showing cattle and helping others were his great passions in life. He will be missed by people throughout the USA. 2018 Junior National Planning Committee makes contribution to ACF An Autumn Drive, final installment of Seasons of Charolais completes series

“Hosting the AIJCA Junior National Show & Leadership Conference is a major undertaking. You pledge your time, your efforts and your state to welcome Charolais youth and families,” said Marty Lewis, 2018 Junior National Planning Committee Chairman. “Our committee valued the support we received from breeders nationwide and wanted to pay it forward to Junior National planning committees to come.” The $17,000 contribution from the 2018 Planning Committee was designated to the ACF Youth & Education fund to support the AIJCA Junior National Show and Leadership Conference and AIJCA youth and educational activities. National efforts to support Charolais youth and education has been strong since the ACF’s formation in October 2015 with initial donations including an open heifer lot in the Thomas Ranch Dispersal, the commissioned series Seasons of Charolais by C.J. Brown from Bill Nottke and the 2011 Junior National Planning Committee rollover funds. The National Sale has been a platform for ACF fundraising efforts: 39th National Sale – $37,500, 38th National Sale – $6,500, 37th National Sale – $9,000. y name is Tara Tellefson. I am 18 years old and I live in Warden, Washington. I live on our family ranch, TC Cattle Company, where we raise Registered Charolais and Angus cattle. We run 120 mother cows and a thousand plus head of grass calves in the fall. I’ve shown Charolais cattle since I could walk on my own. I’ve been heavily involved in 4H and FFA holding offices in both of these great youth organizations. I’ve shown and competed in several of the contests at the past 5 Junior National Charolais shows. I’m currently attending Big Bend Community College to complete my Associates Degree, where I will then move to a university to complete my teaching degree.

Q: What are some of your traits that help you to be a good board member?

A: Some of my traits that help me to be a good board member are that I communicate well with others, I see things through till the end and I work in a timely manner. Q:

If you won 20 million in the lottery, what would you do with the money?

A: If I won 20 million dollars, I would use it to finish my

college education and buy my own ranch to run hundreds of beautiful Charolais cows.

etting goals for your herd and always trying to produce the best cattle possible is what Jeff and Angela Bunker have done for over 20 years. The couple was named 2018 Herdsmen of the Year at the 50th National Charolais Show during the American Royal in Kansas City, Missouri. “I was taking a heifer to the showring for the group classes and people were coming out of the ring telling me congratulations. I had no idea what they were talking about,” said Angela. “When I did hear we had won, I was definitely surprised and honored.” The herdsman award is voted on by all the exhibitors at the National Charolais Show. Angela said to win something that is voted on by your peers is a great honor. The Bunkers run J&A Charolais in Sparta, Wisconsin along with their two daughters, Shade, 15 and Breeze, 12. Angela grew up in the Charolais business and said Jeff got a crash course in the seedstock business when they started dating and were eventually married in 1995. Previously, Jeff had been involved in the show lamb business and his family also had a cow-calf herd, but he had only shown cattle once. Their herd includes 35 head of purebred Charolais cattle. Bulls and females are marketed through consignment sales at the Iowa Beef Expo and Black Hills Stock Show, as well as through private treaty sales. “We want to sell cattle that will help our customers make money. Some of the best advertising is through repeat customers,” she said. The Bunkers are very involved in the Charolais associations, from the state to national level. Jeff serves at the treasurer of the MinnesotaWisconsin Charolais Association. Angela’s involvement began when she was growing up showing Charolais cattle. “Im very thankful for Harlin Hecht, who always let me tag along to shows. Those experiences really taught me a lot,” said Angela. Shade and Breeze are very involved with showing at the national,

state and local levels, starting at a very young age. Participating in contests while at the junior national show has helped the girls learn how to be better communicators and work in a team environment. “Showing cattle teaches so much that they might not otherwise learn and they get to make relationships with other youth who have the same interests,” said Angela. “There really is no better thing for kids to be involved in.” The girls have met many friends whom they can keep in contact with by calling, texting or through social media. Angela is thankful her children can develop those friendships. Angela said their family has set goals for their herd, including raising cattle that compete at the highest level. In 2014, a bull they raised, JAB Drink in My Hand was named the Reserve National Champion Bull. Now they have hopes for the female side. That goal may be near, as Shade exhibited the Supreme Champion breeding female with her Champion Bred and Owned Charolais at the 2018 Wisconsin State Fair. In 2017, she also showed the 4th overall Bred and Owned heifer at the 2017 National Junior Charolais Show. “We always want to raise good cattle, but when we can do well with the bred and owned cattle at big shows, it makes it even better,” Angela said. Another favorite show for the Bunkers is the American Royal. They especially enjoy being part of the Royal Breeders Charolais Bull Classic show because it gets all the breeders amongst each other and shows the camaraderie in the breed. “We love our breed. It’s like a big family and we help each other, especially the kids at the local and state level. We want to help those kids have a good experience in agriculture like we did growing up and like our daughters are having now,” Angela said.

regg Alsup grew up in rural Douglass County, Missouri, where he was first introduced to the show cattle industry. While in high school, Alsup worked for Dr. C.E. Harlan, a local doctor in Ava, Missouri, who was involved in the Shorthorn breed. Alsup had many opportunities to travel with Harlan and experienced his first American Royal and Chicago International with him. “Dr. Harlan served as a mentor in my younger years,” Alsup said. “As a young kid growing up in the ‘60s going out of the county was a big deal.” After graduating high school, Alsup went straight into the workforce to work for Fred Ferrell Farms, a Hereford cattle operation in Elgin, Oklahoma, where he expanded his knowledge on cattle and spent many weeks at cattle shows. Alsup said during his time at Fred Ferrell Farms they had one year the crew was on the road going to cattle shows for a threemonth period. They went to Phoenix, Denver, Amarillo, Fort Worth, Jackson and Houston all before returning home. After the three years of work experience under his belt, Alsup attended Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri, where he completed a bachelor’s degree in animal science. He later went to Arkansas State University to receive a bachelor’s degree in agricultural education. After teaching agricultural education for four years Alsup went on to pursue his passion in the show cattle industry. In 1988 Alsup began his own custom fitting service, Alsup Custom Services. Alsup had his first encounter with the Charolais breed in the late ‘80s. “At the time the trend of cattle was to make them 10 feet tall, which was not necessarily my kind of cattle, but it was the trend,” Alsup said The 1993 American Royal in Kansas City, Missouri, was a big year for the Alsup crew. Alsup had two full sisters who were national champion and reserve national champion Charolais heifers.

The two full sister heifers, named Patty and Reba, created quite the buzz at the show and were influential in the breed. The same year in Kansas City, the Alsup crew won another heifer division, had five female class winners and won several bull classes. “The thing about showing cattle is it is a lot of hard work, Alsup said. “Talent and hard work will always prevail.” Since his start in the breed, Alsup has been a big promoter of Charolais cattle. More than a decade ago, Alsup was concerned when the entries at Kansas City started decreasing. Alsup played an intricate role in the planning and start of the Royal Breeders Classic bull show to help increase numbers at the Royal. Alsup got the idea of the bull classic from when he attended the Canadian Western Agribition, in Regina Saskatchewan, Canada. Today the Royal Breeders classic still creates excitement in the breed as multiple breeders come to watch the event. The Royal Breeders Classic is a unique event as the breeders themselves judge the livestock and have their own say on who is crowned champion. Not only is Alsup skilled at getting cattle ready for a show, but also he is a hand at trimming feet. Alsup learned to trim feet from Donny Ripple, an Enterprise, Kansas, native and well-known breeder in the Polled Hereford breed, he added. “He was really smart about trimming feet,” Alsup said. Alsup credited some of his early success in the Charolais breed to his feet-trimming knowledge. Today, Alsup is still one of the best in the business at trimming feet for multiple show families in southwest Missouri and surrounding areas. Although custom fitting was Alsup’s main trade, he has also raised some of the most influential cows and cow families in the breed, such as the cow Bonnie Mac. Through the years, Alsup has built his business and legacy on hard work and integrity. Alsup said, “I will always remember a quote Joe Lewis told me,” ‘One thing you have to do in the show cattle thing is to maintain your integrity.”

he Hebbert ranch is located in the heart of the Nebraska Sandhills. James Wright, Dave Hebbert’s great-great grandfather, came to Grant County, Nebraska in 1886 and made his first purchase of land the following year. Through the years, more land was acquired and the ranch has remained family owned and operated to date. In 1976, Dave and Mickie Hebbert were married and became the fifth generation to live and work on the ranch. Together they raised three sons, Matthew, Jake and Joshua. Matt and his wife, Lacy, currently reside on the ranch with their boys, Dillon and Waylon. What began as a Hereford based commercial cow-calf ranch transitioned into a purebred operation with the purchase of the first registered Charolais cows in 1978. The last of the commercial cows were sold in 1982 and the Hebbert Charolais partnership was formed between Dave and Mickie and Dave’s parents, Mose and Merla Hebbert. Matt and Lacy Hebbert have since joined in the partnership. The Hebbert Charolais mission is to “produce top-quality genetics while preserving and enhancing the land and natural resources entrusted to our care.” Functional cows are the backbone of the operation. The cowherd is not pampered, but expected to utilize the grass native to the area. The cows are supplemented with salt and mineral. Protein and hay are provided during the winter months as needed. Hebberts make every effort to select only the best sires and dams to produce the most functional offspring they can. Every cow in the herd has been born, bred and raised on the ranch enabling them to stack generations of pedigrees high in maternal traits and qualities consistent with problem free cows - particularly udder structure, fertility, calving ease, structural soundness and disposition. The Hebberts are grateful to be in a business that connects them with cattle producers from all across the country and

beyond the borders. They acknowledge and respect the diversity of each producer’s operation in its approach towards beef production. They value the long-lasting friendships they have made with both the commercial and purebred cattlemen they have been associated with. Throughout the years, Dave and Mickie have committed their support to a number of cattle organizations, including the American International Charolais Association (AICA) and the Nebraska Charolais Association. As a member of the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Association, Dave was on the Seedstock Council when they formed the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic at Kearney, Nebraska in 1992. Dave’s involvement in the AICA included serving on the Board of Directors in 1997-2002, and 2012-2014. He was also a breed representative on the Breed Improvement Committee and Foreign Marketing Committee. Mickie has been an AICA committee representative and served on the board of directors of the Sandhills Cattle Association. Dave was also a member of the Sandhills Task Force, an environmental stewardship organization. In 1995, Hebbert Charolais was a Beef Improvement Federation Seedstock Producer nominee and were awarded the 1996 American International Charolais Association Seedstock Producer of the Year. They were the recipient of the Nebraska Charolais Outstanding Producer Award in 2010 “With Dave’s passing in October of 2017, he left our family with a legacy that we will honor in the years to come….a love for ranching, riding good horses, raising good cattle and being a faithful steward of the land. He had a keen eye for cattle and a passion for their genetics. We are thankful for the knowledge he shared and are proud to continue on with the values our program was built on.”

uilding a legacy is a tradition at Eaton Charolais Ranch. As stewards of the Lindsay, Montana operation, Lee and Connie Eaton are doing their share to ensure the family legacy stands strong. Continuing to build on a foundation started generations before them, the Eatons have dedicated their livelihood to empowering future generations with a solid foundation of Charolais genetics, an impeccable reputation and an undeniably tough work ethic. As part of an evolution that began in 1909 when the eastern Montana ranch got its start on land homesteaded by Lee’s great-grandfather, the Eatons followed their intrigue in 1965 by adding 10 purebred Charolais heifers to the operation. It was a match that has grown to a much higher magnitude. Active in the daily operation of the ranch, Lee and Connie Eaton who work alongside other family members from headquarters that occupy the original homestead, now have the spread stocked with over 2,000 purebred Charolais cows, and a commercial herd of equal size. Using Charolais has meant more to Lee and Connie than most. The couple personally delivers most of the bulls they sell and has developed many friendships with their customers. Additionally, their involvement with the breed has helped them propel the ranch’s success as they became active and have remained active in breed activities worldwide for many years. Lee served as president of the American- International Charolais Association in 2007-2008 and president of the World Charolais

Federation 2009-2010. He is currently active on the AICA Long Range Planning Committee. Connie has been active with the Charolais Dees serving on the officer team. Striving for continued customer satisfaction, their involvement has also meant participating in the collection of data. From Whole Herd Reporting to feedlot and processing information, the Eatons have been devoted to gathering data so they know how their cattle perform. This dedication is part of the process that keeps them confident in their product and progressive within the industry. And, their progress has not gone unnoticed. Selling hundreds of Charolais bulls annually to customers from 28 states across the U.S., Eaton Charolais was recognized at the 2017 meeting of the AICA membership for leading the nation in bull registrations for 2016. Also last year, BEEF Magazine unveiled the operation as one of its Top 100 Seedstock Producers for 2017. Remaining loyal to the breed since those heifers first set foot on the ranch 53 years ago, Lee and Connie have spent half a century supporting breed events and activities, including the National Charolais Sale where they have offered seedstock lots in both herd bulls and females. They have been active sponsors of the Charolais Hospitality Tent at the National Western Stock Show’s Herd Bull Alley since its inception and the entire family was honored at the 2018 National Western as the 49th National Charolais Show Dedicatee.

Vice Chairman Spencer Schrader called the meeting to order. Roll call was taken with 9 members present. Minutes from the March 14, 2018 conference call were approved as presented Action Taken 1. David Hobbs reviewed the 2018-2019 Charolais Show season. 2. Locations for 2019-20 Class A ROE Shows were selected: Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo (permanent); Missouri State Fair; Iowa State Fair; Northern International Livestock Exposition; Keystone International Livestock Exposition. 3. Hobbs reviewed selection procedure of 2019-20 National ROE Show Judges and the AICA Approved Judges List. 4. Meeting adjourned.

Advertising/Marketing Committee Chairman: Mike Schumacher Members present: Mike Schumacher, Bob Tibbs, Melvin Allen, Joshua Owens, Sara Shepherd, Frankie Anthony, Doug Rogers. Chairman Mike Schumacher called the meeting to order. Roll call was taken with 7 members present. Review March 26, 2018 Committee Minutes. Minutes were approved as presented. 1. 2. 3.

Action Taken 1. Sally Northcutt presented an educational document explaining the value of genomic testing. Doug Rogers moved to put the educational piece on the Charolais website. Frankie Anthony seconded. MOTON CARRIED. 2. Northcutt gave an update on her udder score research. Questions followed. Bob Wagner moved to publish this as a research report with sire names listed. Ty Eschenbaum seconded. MOTION CARRIED. 3. Neil Orth reviewed the number of genotypes submitted at the reduced $25 rate. Richard Clark moved to recommend to the board that AICA do an additional 2000 genotypes at the $25 rate with a report back to this committee at the spring membership meetings. Discussion followed. Rogers seconded. MOTION CARRIED. 4. Clark moved to re-order the agenda to discuss item 5 before item 4, Dotty Macy seconded. MOTION CARRIED. 5. The committee discussed the need for additional EPD runs. Lee Eaton moved the evaluation be run 4 times a year. Motion withdrawn. Rogers moved to recommend to the board that in 2019 AICA run the National Cattle Evaluation 6 times a year. Eschenbaum seconded. MOTION CARRIED. 6. Doug Blair presented the possibility of a CCA / AICA joint EPD run. Discussion followed. Clark moved the chair create a subcommittee to study the proposal. Eschenbaum seconded. MOTION CARRIED. 7. Affiliate organizations have access to a match program of up to $1,000 per year when utilizing the AICA ad campaign. Schumacher presented the proposed 2019 Media Budget. Discussion followed about circulation and ad placement timing. Doug Rogers moved to change the proposed budget by moving the fall Working Ranch ad from November to October and making the addition of an October ad placement to BEEF Magazine.
