Dear Cattlemen: Welcome to the annual Eichacker Simmental/Red Angus and JK Angus bull sale. As the sale day gets busy and we don’t have a chance to say “hi” to everyone personally, we would like to take this opportunity to say “thank you” for your interest in our programs. Without you, our valued customers, we wouldn’t be here. Like they say “no 2 years are ever the same” and that was very evident around here. One thing was the same as last year, we had an exceptionally wet late spring and early summer as we had to replant 400 acres of corn that drowned out. The rest of the summer found us with adequate rain and nice weather. Then we had a fall you usually only dream about, an early harvest, then nice weather to work on some of those fall projects. We still didn’t get them all done. We sure are excited to offer this set of bulls this year, we are always trying to make them better and we feel this year it is a reality, as early visitors to our farms have commented that this may be one of our most powerful and deepest sets of bulls yet. We’d like to think most of it is genetics, but once again we had a great fall after we weaned and the bulls just did exceptionally well. This past year a unique opportunity became available to us to invest in a company called Allied Genetic Resources. The basic purpose of Allied is to help you, the commercial cattlemen, capture the best market available for your cattle. The feed yards and packing plants are hungry for good quality Sim/Angus and Angus cattle, we just have to let them know where they are and when they are selling, that is why Allied was formed. Some of you that attended our open house in January where introduced to it then, it’s in its infancy stages now, but you will hear a lot more about Allied and what it can do for you in the future. EPDs: The EPDs listed in the catalog are spring 2011 numbers. Feeding Arrangements & Delivery: We will offer to

feed the bulls at no charge until April 15, 2011. At that time they will be semen tested and delivered free of charge up to 300 miles. We will assist in making the most economical arrangements possible beyond that. We are not responsible for any injury or death to the bulls while in our care.

Health:

All bulls have been tested negative for BVD/PI. All cows are Johnes free. All genetic defect testing has been completed.

Insurance:

Insurance will be available sale day and we would recommend it for the bulls that will be kept at our farm until 4/15/2011. It is based off of a percentage of the purchase price for different lengths of time. Rate charts will be available sale day.

Calving Ease Score: We have put a column in with a calving ease score

with 1, 2, 3 or 4 stars with 1 star being harder calving and 4 stars being the easiest calving score. The score is nothing scientific – it is just our opinions of what your could expect taking into consideration, BW, EPD’s, pedigree and structure of the bull. Do not compare the scores between breeds, for instance, don’t expect the same calving ease out of a Simmental with 3 stars as a Red Angus with 3 stars, each breed needs to be considered on their own. JK Angus bulls are marked in their footnotes as heifer bulls if we thought they would work on such.

Semen Interest: Eichacker Simmentals will retain 1/4 semen interest in all bulls sold and JK Angus will be retaining 1/3 semen interest in all bulls sold. Keep in mind, generally this means absolutely nothing, it only comes into play if semen is collected and sold. Adjusted Scrotal:

Actual scrotal measurements were taken 1-21-2011 then adjusted to a year of age using each breeds own formula for adjusted scrotal measurements. Scrotal measurements for the JK Angus bulls are actual, not adjusted.

Weight Per Day of Age (WDA): 1-21-2011 divided by the days of age.

WDA is the weight of a bull on

113 Day Weight:

The 113 day gain was the average daily gain from the weaning weight until 1-21-2011.

Homozygous and Heterozygous: A homozygous black bull when

mated to any black cows will give you a black calf. A heterozygous black bull carries a red gene, but when mated to black cows will give you a black calf unless your black cow carries a red gene, then you have a slight chance of getting a red calf, but neither will sire gray calves on black cows. The only way to get a gray calf is on a red cow that carries a dilutor gene. So if you have some colored cows that could carry the dilutor gene, a heterozygous black bull is a better choice because some of the calves that would be gray have the potential to be red, but that’s only if your cows have the dilutor gene and blacks do not carry it.

It took into consideration some being retained as replacements, then the rest being fed out and sold grade & yield. Terminal Index (TI): This index is to be used if all calves are going to a feedlot. It evaluates a sire for use only on mature cows with all calves put on feed and sold grade and yield. No other factors were figured in.
