VIEWPOINT

CHAROLAIS Sustainability isn’t “one size fits all”

It never has and never will be.

T

o say that the beef industry is diversified is a gross understatement. Even if we tried, producers cannot ignore the demands and differences of producing cattle in the high desert country in the northwestern U.S. to the deep south, or the plains states to the southern border. Producers, especially generational operations, have, over decades, have developed a business strategy that is manageable, repeatable and weathered many storms, literally and figuratively. So, as the industry and its stakeholders debate sustainability, it simply isn’t a “one size fits all” argument. Broadly speaking, sustainability for producers is about protecting assets, producing a product with value up the supply chain and preparing for the next disaster or down cycle in the cattle business. Again, broadly speaking, sustainability for the retail sectors, supermarkets and restaurants, takes on a completely different conversation often driven by social pressures from consumers totally disconnected from risk-laden production or

Styrofoam cups by the middle of this year. If DD is successful, it is expected that more than one billion foam cups will be removed from landfills annually! Now we’re getting somewhere! Shifting the focus from pressuring an already efficient, sustainable, food production system with a minimal global footprint compared to almost every other industry, makes sense. Challenges over the last three decades to make industry changes have moved all of meat animal protein production to make positive, bold, paradigm shifts that were necessary. The result has been nothing short of amazing. In the same issue of the Reporter, an article contributed by Certified Angus Beef ’s Steve Suther discusses a few of the successes. In the early 1990s, the industry average for USDA Prime was 2%. Fast forward to 2019 and the average has improved to nearly 9% Prime and 72% Choice. Quality improvements are a win-win for producers and consumers. Ag press and opinion editorial, much like this one, often discuss

The Charolais breeders, registered and commercial, have been and will continue to play an important role in continuing conversations about sustainability. As registered seedstock producers and AICA continue to pursue new technologies and genomic information, and stay actively engaged in industry discussions, we enable our commercial producers to take advantage of greater opportunities to move past a commodity product, improve markets and margins and ultimately, true sustainability. producer profitability. The most recent issue of Urner Barry’s Reporter takes on a completely different look at sustainability and for once, the pressure isn’t on meat protein producers. In Sustainability: The deciding factor for consumers, the Reporter discusses consumer pressures to expand the sustainability discussion that places the bullseye on packaging. According to the Reporter, shoppers are projected to spend $150 billion on sustainable products by 2021, which largely impacts packaging. “On a global scale, 81% of consumers feel that it is “extremely” or “very” important that companies implement programs to improve the environment.” The Reporter goes on to state, “Meanwhile, 70% of shoppers would “definitely” or “probably” change their consumption habits to reduce their personal impact on the environment.” Food service giant McDonald’s, is taking baby steps in a few of their global stores. In Norway, McDonald’s serving trays are now being made from 100% recycled marine waste and the same product can be recycled multiple times. McDonald’s in Japan and Burger King in the United Kingdom are recycling old plastic toys to create serving trays. Dunkin Donuts has pledged to eliminate

the producer-consumer disconnect, but we can’t seem to find an actionable process that moves the proverbial needle toward a viable solution collectively. So, the production sector continues to do what we do and produce safe, efficient, affordable meat protein. We continue to conduct research that will ultimately make us even more efficient. We continue to use science to develop tools to mitigate food-born illnesses, make genetic improvements and better utilize the entire carcass. Sustainability in the production sector isn’t a “one size fits all”. It never has and never will be. Our diversity, while inordinately complicated, also insures our independence as producers.

NEWS NOTES

AICA MEMBERSHIP Obituary

Mark Todd Reich, age 52, of Belle Fourche was called home early in the morning of December 18, 2019. Mark was born January 18, 1967 in Laramie, WY to Tim and Ree (Richards) Reich. Mark’s life was distinguished by a passion for perfection and an insatiable search for knowledge and understanding. From his early years in school, from grades, to wrestling and football, he wanted to be the best he could be. He toured Europe on a South Dakota wrestling team trip, and was part of the Belle Fourche High School state champion football team. During that time Mark was also learning to be a very skilled wood worker, building the Best of Show roll-top desk at a multi school shop fair. A comment overheard by a master wood craftsman at that event described Mark well, “a kid that age shouldn’t have that much skill, it’s just not right.” Mark carried the striving for perfection into adulthood. His creativity and his ability to make ordinary tasks works of art was in part learned and fostered by his Grandpa Richards. His determination to finish a job and be able to relax for a job well done was encouraged by his Grandpa Reich. His tenderness and concern for others was cultivated by his grandmothers. Mark married Carleen Moore January 30, 1986 and to this marriage 3 sons, Tyson, Devin and Dillon were born. They resided in Ft. Worth, TX and upon their divorce he moved back to Belle Fourche. He married Maryanne “Annie” Darling on April 1, 2014 at “The Ranch.” He loved his wife, children, family and became good friends with nearly everyone he met. He cherished time spent outdoors hiking, hunting, fishing, trapshooting, observing wildlife and watersports. He especially enjoyed sharing those adventures with his children, close friends and with his nephews and nieces, teaching them to bait a hook, squeeze a trigger slowly or make a whistle from a green willow stick. Mark took time to wonder at the detail in nature, the perfection of a rose and the beauty of a sunset. Grateful for sharing his life are his father and mother, Tim and Ree Reich; his wife, Annie Reich all of Belle Fourche; his children, Tyson (Amber) Reich, Devin (Kenzie) Reich and Dillon Reich all of Ft. Worth, TX; 3 stepchildren, Tamora Rosenbaum, Ian Rosenbaum and Emily Rosenbaum all of Rapid City, SD; his sisters, Heather (Todd) Heckmann of White Bear, MN, Angela Reich of Belle Fourche and Holly (Jeff) Main of Aladdin, WY; 8 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation and sharing of memories were held Sunday, December 29 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Kline Funeral Chapel in Belle Fourche. A Ceremonial Tribute was held Monday, December 30 at 10:30 AM at the Christian Life Center in Belle Fourche.

Obituary

John L. Schurr, 79, of Farnam, died at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney on Saturday, January 4, 2020. John L. was born December 21, 1940, to John and Estella Schurr in Farnam where he grew up on the family farm. John graduated from Farnam High School in 1958 then attended the University of Nebraska and Colorado State University until the death of his dad in 1960 brought him back to work on the farm. In 1961 he started raising purebred Angus cattle and farming with his brother, Jerry, then in 1983 they added a purebred Charolais herd to the ranch. On April 4, 1965, John married Kay Schultheiss in North Platte. The couple lived west of Farnam and had three sons, all who became part of the Schurrtop Angus and Charolais Ranch, which has been a farming, cattle feeding, and purebred operation going on four generations. John was proud that each son earned national recognition on livestock judging teams. John had a great love for cattle and over the years served on numerous committees in the Angus and Charolais breeds. He served two terms on the American Angus Association Board of Directors, was on the Certified Angus Beef Board, a member of the Angus Foundation, Past Director of the Nebraska Angus Association, and Director of Farm Credit Services. Schurrtop has been recognized in competitions including the National Western Stock Show in Denver where he exhibited his cattle for 50 consecutive years, the Great Western Beef Expo, and Beef Empire Days in Kansas where they won the coveted Brookover Award. John had been recognized with numerous awards over the years and was selected as Nebraska Angus Association 2010 Producer of the Year. He had a true passion for cattle feeding and believed in letting the merits of his cattle do the talking. Along with his work, John was also active in the Farnam community where he served on various boards for school, church and the Gothenburg Hospital Foundation. He was a 4-H club leader for 35 years and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Gothenburg. He was also a member of the Cattlemen’s Beef Association, Nebraska Cattlemen, and the Colorado Livestock Association. He will be remembered for his work across the beef industry. He is survived by his wife, Kay, of Farnam; sons, Marty Schurr, and his children, Adalyn and Gavon, all of Maywood and Ryan (Kari) Schurr and their children, Luke and Reese, all of Farnam; brother, Jerry Schurr, of Farnam; sister, Janet (John) Speck, of St. Paul; brother-in-law, Dean (Marcia) Schultheiss, of Orange, California; sisters-in-law, Rose Ann Young, of Martinez, Georgia and Virginia (Jerry) Kasha, of Canton, Georgia; as well as other family. Funeral service was held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 8, 2020, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Gothenburg.

Entrepreneurship Alive and Well Among AIJCA Alumni Johansen Plans Mobile App Launch To Change the Way Agriculture Does Business by Linda Eck

upporting agriculture one “gig” at a time, a Missouri Charolais breeder has created and is spearheading the launch of a mobile application that will provide farmers and ranchers with access to specialized, high-quality laborers willing to provide on-demand jobs. As founder and visionary of AgButler, Kevin Johansen’s goal is to create a digital platform to connect agricultural communities with a tool that can revitalize the economy of rural America. “Our system allows farmers, ranchers and/or agribusinesses to connect with available laborers,” said Johansen, who along with his wife Jamie and their daughters Hadley and Ivee, live in Lebanon. Comparing the product to “ride sharing”, he said employers and laborers will be filtered by location, ratings, work experience and availability. Proving that entrepreneurship is alive and well among alumni of the American International Junior Charolais CHAROLAIS JOURNAL

Association, Johansen and his AgButler team pitched the program in mid-January as one of 10 finalists in the American Farm Bureau’s sixth annual Ag Innovation Challenge in Austin, Texas. Although the team did not win the Challenge, as a finalist AgButler was awarded $10,000. A sum that will help propel the project closer to reality. Falling back to his early days in 4-H, FFA and the AIJCA for inspiration, the 36-year-old Johansen said he has been “kicking the concept for about two years”; but working seriously on it for the past 18 months. So much so that he has pulled together a well-rounded team of fellow agricultural enthusiasts to help in pursuing rollout of the network program. Dustin Johansen, Kevin’s, older brother, serves as Chief Operating Officer. Another AIJCA alum, Dustin brings a thriving desire to connect people and organizations. As a skilled marketing developer and strategist, he is responsible

for establishing industry partnerships and expanding tactics as the company grows its presence within the agricultural community. Chief Financial Officer Marc Allison, another southwest Missourian, living in Greenfield, and sixth-generation row crop and beef cattle farmer, brings an extensive background in both agriculture and ag economics to the company along with an intense desire to help preserve and build rural communities. Also on board with AgButler is Honey Creek Media Marketing Group, owned by Kevin’s wife, Jamie Bellis Johansen assisted her sister, Joanna Wilkinson. This duo brings a wealth of communications, marketing and design experience to the organization, along with time well spent involved in 4-H, FFA and the National Junior Hereford Association. Johansen serves as Chief Executive Officer. Although AgButler is still in product development,

CHAROLAIS JOURNAL

Johansen said the company is currently seeking farmers, ranchers and other potential employers within the ag industry to sign up for AgButler’s “First Service” program. Skilled laborers are also encouraged to sign up. “We’re really pushing our First Service sign up,” said Johansen encouraging interested parties to go to www. agbutlerapp.org and sign up. “We’re developing our network and utilizing our connections so when we’re ready to roll it out, we don’t’ have to worry about a huge input cost.” Those who sign up under First Service will gain early access to the program and can stay up-to-date on the company’s progress. “They’ll be some of the beta testers,” said Kevin. Potential employers are those who find themselves struggling to find high-quality laborers when temporary, part-time help is needed. From grain harvest and working cattle to planting season and fitting show cattle, the goal of AgButler is to develop a network where employers and the work force can meet. First Service will also provide Johansen with an idea of the demographics so AgButler can pinpoint the needs and labor availability. “We want (First Service) producers to try it out so we know what we need to fix here and there,” he said. “We want it to be a good customer experience.” While winning the Ag Innovation Challenge would have been a boost for startup of the company’s application, being a finalist has energized the team. Working diligently toward completing the platform and rolling out the mobile app, Johansen made it home from Texas just in time for a grant interview with the Missouri Agricultural and Small Business Development Authority (MASBDA) in Jefferson City. The following week, AgButler was in Des Moines, Iowa where the team was one of four startups given five minutes each to pitch their product as part of the Farm Credit Services Ag Tech Innovation Competition. The event was held in conjunction with the Iowa Power Farming Show and presentations were made directly to farmers and ranchers. Grand prize was $20,000 and winner of the People’s Choice Award received $5,000. While attending events around the country, the team is also promoting the app, visiting with industry leaders, producers and ag industry employers in hopes of growing their First Service platform. In addition to allowing specialized laborers the opportunity to connect with producers, Johansen noted AgButler will also provide a great opportunity at universities and colleges. Students who struggle with finding job connections will be able to easily work around class schedules by designating when and where they can work. “When we have it rolled out, it’s just going to be on a transaction base,” noted Johansen. “We charge a $10 connection fee and the employer then pays the worker. Once we reach a more sophisticated business level, we can offer subscription fees for “x” number of hires.”

Charolais Selling 150 Bulls

13 Annual Bull Sale th

5 p.m. • Saturday, March 14, 2020 Kearney, Missouri

The Wrights have had many sets of ET bulls offered in their annual bull sale, but not quite like these two awesome flush mate ET brothers! They will make their debut at the National Western Stock Show and there will be talk, lots of talk! They are young April’s and looking forward to bucking heads with the older competition they will face in the Charolais Pen Show. Their sire Resource first made his appearance at the Denver Stock Show as the lead bull of the 2015 Grand Champion Pen-of-Three Bulls. Then he sold in March when one-half interest and one-half possession brought $44,000! Since those days his progeny have topped sales and won major shows across the country. These bulls are standouts for their phenotype and maternal power. Their extremely impressive dam was the featured bred heifer in the Wright Female Sale in 2014 where a one-half embryo interest sold for $25,000 to Patrick Maher in South Dakota. Then in 2017 her equally powerful bred heifer daughter WC Maher Clarice 6401 P ET, sired by Rushmore scored again when a one-half interest in her sells for $17,000 to 007 Charolais in Oklahoma. She was linebred to the superior LT Brenda 6120 donor, the dam of LT Ledger 0332! Both of these bulls are also linebred to Brenda’s Ease 3055, the dam of LT Brenda 6120 and LT Rushmore 8060!

– Maternal Granddam to #9154 &

These Resource sons are powerful examples of top end performance and phenotype. This one has been a standout since birth and the fellas at WC have kept a close eye on him. He is one of the best they have ever raised! In the show ring he has been tabbed the Grand Champion Bull at the 2019 Tulsa State Fair and the National Bull Calf Champion in Louisville. And yes, he tipped the scales to an impressive 916 lbs. to ratio 117 at weaning and it is bred into him on both sides of the pedigree. Resource AWW: 923 lbs. and Icon’s dam born on January 14, 2013, calving interval: 2-7-15, 2-23-16, 1-21-17, 1-11-18 & 1-2-19! One son AWW: 786 lbs. and three daughters averaged weaning weight: 698 lbs. and one of those daughters sold for $8,500 at weaning age.

Redemption

A FULL BROTHER TO REDEMPTION!!!! Same look and build. If you have been paying attention to the Charolais breed there is one name that continues to pop up in all conversations and IT’s REDEMPTION! This story starts back with SCC Lady Mac K118, a great donor bred in the Southern Cattle Company herd in Florida had such a storied production life that at 13 years of age she still sold at public auction for $11,250! She was the dam of WCCC Miss Alliance 428 that produced the 2017 National Champion WC Kendall 5173 P ET! And Miss Alliance 428 was also the dam of WC Rolls Royce 3177 that defeated many soon to be National Champions in 2014 and then raised CCC WC Redemption 7143 Pld ET. In 2018, a one-half interest and one-half possession of Redemption commanded $85,000. In the fall 2019 Redemption’s first daughter to sell at public auction at eight months of age for $32,500! Here is an opportunity to invest in a genetic monster that will be promoted forever.

If you don’t make the trip to Denver to see these outstanding WC Monumental 5524 sons, then you need to make the trip to Missouri and take a look! They are studs and this one is perfectly structured, awesome in his look and powerful. This one is a full brother to WC Alli 8303 P that the Ediger’s purchased at $11,000 during our December 2018 Female Sale after she was a National Class Winner in October 2018 at Kansas City. That following fall she was the Reserve Grand Champion Heifer at the 2019 Kansas State Fair. A full sister in blood sold this past December in our 2019 Female Sale for $7,000 to the Filippo family in Oklahoma where she will also be seeing the show ring. There is performance dependability here too, just look at his spring 2014 dam’s calving interval and weaning weights; 1-17-16 bull AWW: 740 lbs.; 2-2-17 bull AWW: 823 lbs.; 2-318 Ediger heifer AWW: 753 lbs. and now 1-6-19 AWW: 808 lbs.

– Sire of WC Monumental

Another great Monumental son and even more performance history. His dam has been a great producer at WC for years and this is her best work to date. She was born in spring 2010 and her calving record: 2-18-12, 1-30-13, 1-20-14, 2-23-15, 2-7-16, 1-4-17, 1-16-18 & 1-12-19. The AWW average on her four registered bull calf progeny is 828.3 lbs. Her first calf sired by Rushmore is her only heifer calf born 2-18-12 is still in the herd today never missing a spring calving date and has an AWW average of 750 lbs. on her female offspring and 817 lbs. on one bull calf. And what about WC Monumental? He sold in the 2017 WC Bull Sale 2/3 interest for $42,500 to Weber Charolais in South Dakota. He posted an AWW of 937 lbs. to ratio 125, 140 lbs. heavier than the next heaviest bull in his contemporary group! His first bred heifer daughter to sell in the December 2019 WC Female Sale goes for $13,500!

They just keep coming at you, these high-end performance monsters sired by the great WC Monumental! This one with even more performance along with more calving-ease data. You will really admire his awesome body, hip and power. Why he should be a great one, his dam is none other than the great donor #1140! She captures everyone’s imagination when they see her. She may certainly be the best daughter of the powerful Baldridge Sweetheart 7M alive. She is now owned by Wright Charolais and Grand Hills Cattle in Colorado. The dam of Monumental - WC Asta 0505 is a tremendous donor, now check out this next bull in this line-up sired by WC Inferno 6561 P ANOTHER son of WC Asta 0505 and a full brother to WC Monumental!

– Dam of Monumental & Inferno

WC Inferno 6561 P One only needs to ask anyone connected to Wright Charolais to see how much they love the first calf crop of WC Inferno’s! He might have got a little overlooked during the 2018 Wright Charolais Bull Sale when Uncharted brings $157,500 and Redemption sells for $85,000, but he was the third high-selling bull at $47,500 going to 5L Ranch in Montana and he is proven out to be a great purchase for them. His dam #5322 has been a great one for WC, born in 2015 all three of her progeny have been powerful in performance and style. Her first calf, a heifer had an AWW of 745 lbs. to ratio 112, the #1 ranked out of that calf crop, her second calf, a bull WC Recon 8371 P with an AWW 857 lbs., ratio 111, #4 out of 72 bull calves and sold to Mitch Thomas in Texas for $9,500 in the 2019 WC Bull Sale and now her third calf AWW 834 lbs.! The maternal granddam WC bought from Hubert Charolais Ranch has the same performance power producing WC three progeny with an average AWW ratio of 110.7!

Every year there has to be ONE and here he is, the #1 heaviest weaning weight bull of the entire WC calf crop! He comes in with a highly impressive AWW of 918 lbs. to ratio 117. He is bred to do it. His sire WC Visionary 7254 was an exciting son of Resource in our 2018 Bull Sale in which a one-half interest and one-half possession sold for $29,000 to Sandmeier in South Dakota. He was named the National Reserve Junior Bull Calf Champion in Denver and was a maternal brother to the Fort Worth National Champion Bull WC Everest 4048 in 2017. Visionary posted the second highest REA of all the spring born 2017 bulls in that sale with a 20.27 REA. WC Power Play 9291’s dam has not been weak in her production with her first bull calf having an AWW of 838 lbs. and her next calf, a heifer pounding it down to an AWW of 746 lbs. Need more? His maternal granddam LT Pearl’s Breeze 2236 is the dam of LT Bluegrass 4017 P the sire of LT Ledger 0332!

These fall 2018 bulls won’t be in Denver, but they will highlight that set of fall bulls at the sale March 14th! This is a massive herd sire prospect that is a three-quarter brother to the $125,000 WC Milestone 5223 P. You will love the mass, rib, body and muscle in this powerhouse bull. His sire WC Benelli sold as a yearling in the 2013 Wright Charolais Annual Bull Sale for $50,000 and today is noted as one of the best producing sons of DA Passport in the breed. And he should have been good, his dam is one of the premier donors of the breed JWK Clarice J139 ET! His young dam born 8-15-15 had her first calf, a heifer on 9-5-17 and weaned her to an AWW of 710 lbs. and now this powerful son to 836 lbs. AWW to ratio 116, the #2 ranked bull of that bull calf crop of 34 head!

M&M Outsider 4003 Pld

WC Missy 0516 P ET – Dam of #8727 They didn’t use a lot of M&M Outsider semen in this herd, but when they did, they made it count! Chris had a plan with each ET mating they used it on and it worked every time. In the December 2018 WC Female Sale an Outsider daughter topped the open heifers at $22,500 with WC Adriana 7901 selling to Madison Harrell in Illinois. This awesome built Outsider son will gather attention sale day. His equally power donor dam has been a great producer for Arthur Charolais and the Wright Charolais ET program. Her first calf sold for $10,000 after posting AWW of 862 lbs. WC sold her next heifer calves for $4,850 and $6,000. Several ET daughters remain in the WC herd today. Her ET heifer calves were highly sought after in the Arthur Dispersal back in November selling at weaning age for $4,000, $3,800 and $4,000. The maternal grand dam of this bull is another great donor that started this super productive cow family WCCC Miss Alliance 428, the dam of the National Champion Female WC Kendall 5173 P ET.

Preventing Scours in Baby Calves By Heather Smith Thomas

T

he most common illness in young calves is scours. According to Dr. George Barrington (Washington State University), diseases resulting in diarrhea create the greatest economic loss in this age group. In beef calves, one study showed that 5.5% of calves die from diarrhea during the first 3 weeks of life. There are many causes for intestinal infection and diarrhea including bacteria, viruses or protozoa. Whether calves get sick is often related to multiple factors including exposure (contact with pathogens, and the “dose” of pathogens), level of immunity, and stress. Good weather, clean ground, and stress reduction (shelter from bad weather, minimizing confinement) can help reduce incidence of scours.

BIOSECURITY -

Barrington says the two major strategies for prevention are 1. Try to reduce the likelihood of introducing a disease agent into

the herd (external biosecurity—not bringing new cattle into the herd that might expose your cattle to new pathogens), and 2. Try to reduce the likelihood of transmitting a disease that is already present (internal biosecurity). An example of the first strategy would be to never buy dairy calves to raise on cows that lose their calves. A dairy calf might bring Salmonella, Cryptosporidia, or Johne’s disease into a beef herd. An example of the second strategy would be to make sure your cows calve on new, clean ground—rather than in the winter feeding area—to minimize newborn calves’ contact with fecal material and contamination. The Sand Hills calving method, in which the cows that have not yet calved are moved to a new, clean pasture every 2 weeks, is one way to help prevent scours in young calves. “You want to keep the pathogens away from the youngest calves, and keep these babies away from the pathogens,” he explains.

continued from page 47 The most frequently recognized disease agents causing diarrhea in young calves are normal inhabitants of the GI tract of most healthy mature cattle. These organisms exist in low concentrations and without clinical signs of infection. “Most cattle are probably exposed to continuous, low doses of these pathogens, shed by sub-clinically infected or immune herdmates. When young, immunologically naïve calves are exposed to low doses, they too can develop immunity and not show signs of disease,” he says. “However, if young calves are exposed to high doses, two things can happen. First, these calves typically develop clinical disease. Second, they become ‘super shedders’ and release billions of viral particles (or bacteria) per gram of feces. This super shedding contaminates the environment quickly and puts other calves at a much higher risk for disease,” Barrington explains. Younger calves with less resistance, or that become exposed to a high level of pathogens in the environment, are most at risk. “There are some nasty bacteria—like Salmonella—that you don’t want to bring into your herd, but most of the others are already there. Most viruses (rotavirus, corona virus), protozoa (especially coccidia, and sometimes cryptosporidia) and even many E. coli are usually present in the herd. Preventing scours in young calves is mainly a matter of minimizing exposure of young, immuno-naive calves to these pathogens,” he says. It doesn’t hurt to have some exposure, because this stimulates the young calf to start building immunity against the pathogens. Calves become sick when they are exposed to an overwhelming level of these pathogens. Since most of the pathogens we’re concerned about are passed in feces (from adult cattle, and from older calves that have come into contact with these pathogens), we want to keep young calves in a relatively clean pasture.

REDUCING CONTAMINATION OF THE ENVIRONMENT “Calves get exposed, so it’s a matter of controlling the level of infection in their environment. We know the pathogens are there, so we try to spread calves out and minimize grouping/ congregating them in small areas,” he says. Then they don’t encounter a high level of contamination. Summer calving, with cows spread out on clean pasture, greatly reduces risk for scours. Whenever the cows with young calves have to be fed, this groups them in a smaller area and presents more challenge with contamination. “If our feeding pattern can help spread them out, this can minimize problems. A feeding area can become contaminated very quickly when space is limited or ground is wet. If you use feed bunks or round bale feeders, you need to move them often. If you are feeding on the ground, keep moving to new areas,” he says. “It helps to feed some distance away from water so cattle have to travel between feed and water and don’t stay all the time in the same small area, with more manure buildup. The most important thing is to never calve in your winter feeding area because it is highly contaminated,” says Barrington. “This is where the Sand Hills method is beneficial, rotating the cows to a new pasture every couple weeks. Grouping calves based on age really helps,” he says. The older calves have already begun shedding pathogens in their feces, and if you can have the younger, more vulnerable calves in a new, clean place, they won’t be exposed so quickly, nor to such an overwhelming load.

“Calves get exposed, so it’s a matter of controlling the level of infection in their environment. We know the pathogens are there, so we try to spread calves out and minimize grouping/ congregating them in small areas,”

CHAROLAIS JOURNAL

BOOSTING IMMUNITY VIA COLOSTRUM – Dr. Chris Clark (Large Animal Medicine), Western College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Saskatchewan says a healthy cow with good colostrum gives the calf the best protection. “There must be a high level of antibodies in the cow’s colostrum and the calf must nurse enough colostrum, very quickly after birth, to be adequately protected,” he says. “You want to make sure your cows are vaccinated for scours, up-to-date on their vaccinations, and vaccinated relatively close to when they start calving. Then the cow will have the highest possible level of antibodies in her blood, which means she will then have high levels in her colostrum,” he explains. Also make sure the cow is in good body condition before calving, with proper level of nutrients when she gives birth. “This will also ensure that she can produce the best and largest amount of colostrum. As a rule of thumb, heifers’ colostrum is never quite as good,” Clark says. They haven’t had as much chance to become exposed to as many things and to build as strong immunity as an older cow. “If you need to give a calf colostrum (if he can’t nurse for some reason), it should be as much colostrum as possible and as fast as possible. This means about 6 pints in the first 6 hours and another 6 pints in the following 6 hours, to give him the best opportunity to absorb adequate antibodies.” You might use frozen colostrum or some from another cow, or milked from the calf’s own mother if for some reason he is unable to suckle her. “If you don’t have any colostrum available, consider using one of the high quality commercial substitutes. Make sure it’s a good quality—one that is made from colostrum rather than one that was made by extracting antibodies from milk or blood,” says Clark. Certain vaccines, given at the appropriate time during pregnancy, stimulate the cow to produce antibodies against some of the pathogens the calf will encounter, and the calf receives this “instant immunity” by nursing her colostrum. If a calf can’t nurse or doesn’t nurse on time to absorb those

antibodies, however, you’ve wasted your money on the vaccine. “There is no one vaccine that will halt all problems, and trying to depend too much on vaccines won’t resolve a scour problem,” says Barrington. No vaccine can make up for poor management, but vaccination can augment good management in a prevention program. There are some good vaccines, and they keep changing. Which ones you select should depend on your own situation and needs, with recommendations from your veterinarian. “These may include rota-corona vaccines, E. coli vaccines and some of the clostridia (such as C. perfringens Type C&D),” Barrington says. Which brands and types you select may depend on your needs and timing--when it is most feasible to vaccinate the pregnant cows in your particular operation.

MINIMIZE STRESS –

Birth is stressful for the calf, but even more stressful if it’s a difficult birth or he’s born in cold temperatures. “Shelter is important, but calving in a barn can also be a problem. We’ve stopped many scours outbreaks just by spreading the animals as far and wide as possible rather than putting them into a barn,” says Barrington. If cows must calve in a barn, make sure the stalls are always clean, for each cow, and never leave the new pair in the barn for more than 12-24 hours. “If you congregate the cows to calve near the barn it takes a tremendous amount of work to deal with the contamination,” he says. Even if you aren’t calving in winter, a late spring storm may necessitate shelter so you need to be set up to provide it with the least amount of stress and contamination. “We can’t control the weather but we can address things like crowding by spreading out the feeding or moving the cattle to clean areas.” This helps make sure calving cows are not lying in fresh manure and that young calves are not exposed to feces from older scouring calves. With the Sand Hills system the cows calve in small separate groups and are not co-mingled until the youngest calves are about a month old and past the most critical age for scours.

With the establishment of the American Charolais Foundation and its mission to support scientific research, development and education activities, it is fitting to place this contribution into the Foundation. With the Gareys’ foresight, Buzz and Marilyn’s dedication and passion for the Charolais industry will continue to influence generations of Charolais breeders to come.” Marilyn and Buzz Garey (left) pictured with fellow AICA Hall of Fame Inductees at the 1991 Fall AICA Meeting.

Buzz and Marilyn Garey began their own sales management company in 1954 and continued to operate it for 35 years. This business originally covered the purebred dairy cattle industry, but in 1963, Buzz made the move to Charolais in particular. The Gareys associated themselves with Charolais breeders in the mid-Atlantic and New England states. Buzz and Marilyn served on various AICA committees and strived to be innovators and developers within the Charolais industry, initiating sales and junior activities for the betterment of the breed. Buzz was inducted into the AICA Hall of Fame in 1991.
