VIEWPOINT

CHAROLAIS “Going Long” Not just another sports metaphor

Any business prognosticator will tell you flexibility is imperative for any hope of success in the economic environment we’ve all lived in for the past few years. However, one of the most important tools for a member-owned business like the American-International Charolais Association is a viable long-range plan. Mission statements are bold and impressive. Over time, however, most mission statements are passively displayed in a frame on the wall in a boardroom. A viable long-range plan, constantly reviewed, modified and executed truly becomes the rudder that steers the ship. Managing a business dependent upon software, computer equipment and workstations is much like your own seedstock operations. As beef producers, you make investments in herd bulls based on the genetic predictions and ranch

necessary upgrades, but no major redesigns. More than 9,000 total visits were logged on to www.charolaisusa.com from December 1 through December 31, 2012. Those 9,000+ visitors browsed more than 19,500 pages. Today, more than one-third of all member business is conducted online and the percentage of Internet use increases every month. Almost 20% of all visits to our site are accessed using a smartphone or tablet. The new modifications will, in some cases, combine systems providing enhanced opportunities for better reporting and the development of future online tools. Expanded database capabilities make incorporating new industry science and technology such as genomic data a reality. The Plan set 2013 as a benchmark year to define all Legacy sires and dams

“Today, more than one-third of all member business is conducted online and the percentage of Internet use increases every month. Almost 20% of all visits to our site are accessed using a smartphone or tablet.” equipment based on short and long-term needs. Every investment, whether live animals or hard steel, have an eventual sunset. A bull will eventually become obsolete or injured, but ultimately will be replaced. Equipment wears out. The bottom line is, every successful producer understands the value of a long-term business plan. In 2011, the AICA Board of Directors and Long Range Planning Committee invested countless hours in the development of a workable long-range plan. Then in 2012 the plan was expanded to include an operational plan. The Long Range Planning Committee and AICA staff examined every business component and every revenue stream and expense, facility and equipment. The AICA operational plan is a working document with timelines, costs, measurable goals and amortization or “life expectancy” of the line items. As we operate more and more in a paperless, almost virtual business environment, one of the largest expenditures for AICA, as most other businesses, is software and hardware. Long term planning enables us to manage our business, improve timely services and position AICA to offer new services or take advantage of advancing technology. As indicated on the 2013 AICA operational plan, we have begun the process of software upgrades. The software currently in use was installed in 2000. In 2005, we added the online module, giving us the opportunity to provide web-based business solutions accessible through www.charolaisusa.com. Over the years, we have made

and complete a physical database of Legacy Project animals. The software redesign establishes a robust platform for the collection and analysis of the Legacy genomic information. Future research projects and collaborations for such important economic indicators as feed efficiency and expanded carcass information can easily be assimilated into the new system. Since the plan is a working document for the Association board and staff, we have managed our financial resources to accommodate the expense as well as expenses necessary for hardware upgrades in the future. Many of the improvements will be seamless and go unnoticed, but the opportunity to make AICA administrative work more efficient and cost effective will be very beneficial in the long run. Our ability to implement a new and improved computer system can be directly attributed to a board of directors with an extraordinary commitment to AICA. Their willingness to devote their time and contribute to the process of positioning AICA and the Charolais breed for the future is unprecedented. Since our board is a collection of no-nonsense pragmatist, we haven’t planned for it to rain. In fact, we’ve planned in the event it doesn’t rain! That’s what good business people do. The end result is an AICA office with the ability to design and implement programs and provide better services to serve you and any beef producer interested in Charolais genetics.

Be Ready and Prepared! Compile performance records for your customers

I have never bought any clothes or a new hat that I

didn’t first look at the tag or try it on to make sure it would fit. I’ve talked to some that have though and they typically aren’t very happy with the product and are usually bargain shoppers to begin with. Most shoppers rely on the information provided to them to assist in making an informed decision. “When I go buy seed corn, I don’t have to ask for details, it’s right there on the label for me,” says Dave Nichols, Bridgewater, Iowa. When shopping for clothing I don’t have to ask for the size, what the product is made of, where it was made or even how to care for it. It’s usually all right there on the label. Same when I buy a car, a computer, cell phone, and/or many other products. In fact I’m not a very willing buyer when no information is provided short of a promise by the salesperson that it is what I want. There are many opportunities to approach prospective customers. At the livestock auction market, fairs, cattlemen’s association meetings and other venues where cattlemen may gather. Many times I’ve seen producers walk right past a prospective customer only to complain the next day that he can’t sell any bulls. It is difficult to get prospective customers on your ranch. But once you have them there you should make it as easy for them to get information as you would want it to be for yourself. Be ready! Have all of your records handy and in a format that is easy to read and hold in one hand while looking at cattle. And don’t wait for your customer to ask, they may not look at the information you give them, but they will appreciate the fact that you have it, have put in the effort to collect and record the data, and have taken the time to make it available in a format they can read.

Hey Everyone!! My name is Megan Johnson and I am currently attending Redlands Community College, where I am majoring in Ag Communications. I recently joined the AIJCA Board, where I am excited to work with not only the other board members but junior members as well. Being a part of the livestock industry and showing cattle has been a huge part of my life. I am from the small town of Beaver, Oklahoma, which is located in the panhandle of Oklahoma known as “No Man’s Land.” Q: How did you become involved in the AIJCA? A: My dad has been involved in the Charolais breed for

years and through his involvement I have come to love the breed as well. There was never a doubt in my mind that I would be a part of such an outstanding association. I feel so fortunate to be a part of the AIJCA.

Q:

Which Charolais Junior National contest have you enjoyed participating in the most?

A: I enjoy participating in the showmanship contest at

attending the Charolais Junior Nationals during the summer. Talking to them about all the opportunities and activities there are and let’s not forget about the friends that you will make and have for a lifetime.

Q: What is something most people do not know about you? A: Something people do not know about me… that’s a

tough one. I guess being from the panhandle of Oklahoma; I literally lived in the middle of nowhere it seems like most days. I am 20 minutes from the town of Beaver and 35 minutes from the town of Laverne, where I went to high school. However, now that I am in college and living in El Reno, Oklahoma located around Oklahoma City, things sure have changed for me. But, boy there are days where I wish I could be home out in the middle of the country with no more hustle and bustle of the city.

Q: What is your favorite memory from a Charolais Jr. National?

A: This past Charolais Junior Nationals held in Grand Island, Nebraska has been one of my favorites. Not only did my heifer get picked to be the Reserve Bred and Owned Female, but I was also given the opportunity to become a part of the AIJCA Board of Directors. The excitement could not have been enough. I made many new friendships this Q: Who inspired you to run for the AIJCA Junior past summer with people all over the country. I can barely Board of Directors? wait to see what will happen in 2013 at the Junior National A: My mom is the person behind me running for the in Texarkana, Arkansas! AIJCA Junior Board of Directors. She not only encouraged Q: As a mentor, what did you learn when me to run but has also motivated me to do better and take participating in the mentor/ mentee program? all the opportunities there are presented. She is not only A: Being able to participate in this program was a there for me but also stands behind me all of the way. great opportunity to not only meet new members to the Q: From a state with fewer active junior association but to also learn a little about them. I think members, how do you encourage new membership it is a great idea to pair young junior members with the and participation at the Junior National? older members, so that they have someone to look up to seeking help, advice, or more to ways to become A: I try to attend some jackpots, fairs, and the Oklahoma when more involved. Youth Expo where I have the chance to talk to kids about Junior Nationals every year. Showmanship is a way for everyone to show their skills in the ring. Every time I compete it is a new chance for me to better myself from the last contest. It is one of my goals to improve to the point that I will be at the top of my game and win.

Bull Management – Vaccinations and Health By Heather Smith Thomas

Bulls should be on a good health care program, just like your cow neglected or left behind in all the cattle processing. Then it comes time herd. According to Dr. Ron Skinner, a veterinarian/breeder near Hall, Montana, there are 4 things that can play major roles in cattle health, and the fertility of a bull—nutrition, genetics, disease, and stress that makes the animal more vulnerable to disease. “Reproduction in a bull is no better than the weakest link in that chain,” says Skinner. If any of these factors create a problem, fertility will be compromised. The bull may be infertile or may have suboptimal fertility. A low pregnancy rate in the first half of the breeding season—in the cows being bred by a certain bull—may be the result of sub-optimal fertility due to any one of those factors. “If you have a bull in a single sire group that is not getting as many cows settled as he should, it could be that he’s not as fertile as he should be, due to a weak link in that chain,” he explains. “The bull may not have optimal fertility because he is exhausting his semen supply and is not producing semen as well as he should— because of one of those factors. If a bull is being used very heavily, usually a 7-day rest will bring him back to full speed, regarding semen count or production. Rotating bulls in and out of the cow herd (in for a week, out for a week) is not a bad strategy, but if a bull is healthy, heavy use is not damaging to his reproductive abilities—unless he injures himself,” says Skinner. A bull may deplete his semen supply under heavy use, but should be able to come right back with a short rest, even just an overnight rest if he only bred 2 to 3 cows that day, since there are always more sperm developing. If a bull is trying to breed numerous cows each day and is dragged down nutritionally, however, this is the bull that needs to be out for a week, and not just overnight. “Bulls need to be vaccinated before breeding season. Often they are

to turn the bulls out and people realize they haven’t been vaccinated. Bulls should be vaccinated well ahead of the breeding season,” says Skinner. It’s not wise to vaccinate bulls the day you turn them out. Depending on age of the bull and what you vaccinate for, the time it takes for immunity to develop after vaccination can vary. A booster shot does not take as long as a first time shot. If the bull has stress, or reactions from vaccination, this may compromise his abilities for a while during the start of breeding, depending on the vaccine. “IBR vaccine, for instance, should be given long enough ahead of time that the animal, if stressed, can get past any recrudescence of the IBR virus and any shedding of the virus. This may take 2 weeks, but if you give the vaccine 30 days ahead of time the bull should no longer be shedding by the time you turn him out,” says Skinner. “Some people will tell you it’s better to vaccinate at least 60 days ahead, so that if the bull has a fever, he’ll have a new batch of sperm cells by breeding time. But the bull will be going through a stress period as soon as he goes out with the cows, that first 30 days, and he needs some immunity. We find that IBR recrudesces in a cow during the stress of estrus, and if you are going into a herd with a bull that is not properly vaccinated, he is apt to be challenged, from that cow herd.” You want him to have peak immunity, to protect him, during that first 30 days, as well as no temporary impairments from his own vaccination that might hinder his fertility or ability to breed cows at this crucial time, so vaccinate him several weeks ahead of turnout. In many cases you will be vaccinating semi-annually (fall and spring) depending on the risks for certain diseases in your area, and your veterinarian’s advice. So plan ahead and have a good vaccination program for the bulls, just as you would your cows.

SPRING

2013

AICA Trait Leaders The American-International Charolais Association has recently released the Spring 2013 National Charolais Cattle Evaluation. Included in this release are the Spring 2013 AICA Trait Leaders. Listed in the next seven pages is an abbreviated listing of Trait Leaders and the EPD Percentile Breakdown for Active Sires, Active Dams and NonParents. Progeny Proven sires identified from the evaluation as Trait Leaders are those that excel in a specific trait. The determination of a Trait Leader is based on meeting superior standards in both EPDs and accuracy values for a trait. The sires listed, include the top sires for CE, BW, WW, YW, Maternal Milk, and MCE and the top sires for HCW, FAT, REA and MARB. To become eligible, progeny proven sires must have met an accuracy standard of .55 for weaning weight EPD and have at least five (5) calves sired by him with performance information reported within the last two years. This latest analysis represents the most accurate and comprehensive evaluation of the American Charolais cattle population ever published. An EPD is the best estimate of an animal’s genetic worth given the information available for the evaluation of traits. More than any other selection tool, research herds and field records have validated the merit of an EPD as a selection tool to make directional change in beef herds for the traits evaluated. Research has further shown that even for non-parent animals, an EPD can be as much as nine times more accurate than a with-in herd ratio or weight. There are many traits that impact the profitability of the beef enterprise—not all of those traits are evaluated in the American Charolais Cattle Evaluation. Furthermore, proper management practices must be matched to your genetics to realize the best opportunity for profitability. Information published here in the Charolais Journal is a condensed version of a much broader base of information on the National Charolais Cattle Evaluation that is easily accessible on the AICA Web site at www.charolaisusa.com.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION LONGRANGE™ (eprinomectin) should be given only by subcutaneous injection in front of the shoulder at the recommended dosage level of 1 mg eprinomectin per kg body weight (1 mL per 110 lb body weight). WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS Withdrawal Periods and Residue Warnings Animals intended for human consumption must not be slaughtered within 48 days of the last treatment. This drug product is not approved for use in female dairy cattle 20 months of age or older, including dry dairy cows. Use in these cattle may cause drug residues in milk and/or in calves born to these cows. A withdrawal period has not been established for pre-ruminating calves. Do not use in calves to be processed for veal. Animal Safety Warnings and Precautions The product is likely to cause tissue damage at the site of injection, including possible granulomas and necrosis. These reactions have disappeared without treatment. Local tissue reaction may result in trim loss of edible tissue at slaughter. Observe cattle for injection site reactions. If injection site reactions are suspected, consult your veterinarian. This product is not for intravenous or intramuscular use. Protect product from light. LONGRANGE™ (eprinomectin) has been developed specifically for use in cattle only. This product should not be used in other animal species. When to Treat Cattle with Grubs LONGRANGE effectively controls all stages of cattle grubs. However, proper timing of treatment is important. For the most effective results, cattle should be treated as soon as possible after the end of the heel fly (warble fly) season. Environmental Hazards Not for use in cattle managed in feedlots or under intensive rotational grazing because the environmental impact has not been evaluated for these scenarios. Other Warnings: Underdosing and/or subtherapeutic concentrations of extended-release anthelmintic products may encourage the development of parasite resistance. It is recommended that parasite resistance be monitored following the use of any anthelmintic with the use of a fecal egg count reduction test program. TARGET ANIMAL SAFETY Clinical studies have demonstrated the wide margin of safety of LONGRANGE™ (eprinomectin). Overdosing at 3 to 5 times the recommended dose resulted in a statistically significant reduction in average weight gain when compared to the group tested at label dose. Treatment-related lesions observed in most cattle administered the product included swelling, hyperemia, or necrosis in the subcutaneous tissue of the skin. The administration of LONGRANGE at 3 times the recommended therapeutic dose had no adverse reproductive effects on beef cows at all stages of breeding or pregnancy or on their calves. Not for use in bulls, as reproductive safety testing has not been conducted in males intended for breeding or actively breeding. Not for use in calves less than 3 months of age because safety testing has not been conducted in calves less than 3 months of age. STORAGE Store at 77° F (25° C) with excursions between 59° and 86° F (15° and 30° C). Protect from light. Made in Canada. Manufactured for Merial Limited, Duluth, GA, USA. ®The Cattle Head Logo is a registered trademark, and ™LONGRANGE is a trademark, of Merial. ©2012 Merial.
