VIEWPOINT

CHAROLAIS We’re Movin’ On

The tools to make every calf crop better than the last are available to any beef producer.

T

he fat lady hasn’t sung just yet, but we’re moving on! By all industry indications, the future for beef isn’t just good, but really good. We aren’t going to rehash 2020 and the multiple stressors placed on every production sector, but it appears many of those stressors are being mitigated or eliminated moving into the first quarter of 2021. The January 22, electronic issue of CME’s The Beef, written each day by Cassie Fish reported, “The strength CME cattle futures have been exhibiting for weeks turned very real today. It is a day long overdue. The cattle market, one of the most punished and undervalued of all commodities in 2020, is finally recovering… 2021 is the year of vaccines and likely a reopening economy. The backlog has been dispensed with and even though the industry is

when it came to pounds. One only needs to review the January 2021 Genetic Trend for the traits of economic importance to graphically see breed improvement. From 1990 through 2019, the National Cattle Evaluation for Charolais documents a steady improvement in lower birth weights, dramatically improved calving ease, increased weaning, yearling weights and carcass weight as well as significant improvements in carcass quality. Moving an entire population of cattle is like watching an elephant dance. The dance may look clumsy and it’s hard to visualize such a large beast dancing in the first place. Historically, changing populations of cattle (i.e., breeds) have been just as clumsy. In the late 60s and early 70s, artificial insemination and

We have a breed of cattle that greatly contributes to the beef industry. The producers behind those cattle and our breed are gigantic stakeholders who have tremendous investments over generations. wading through the large Q3 2020 placements now, an improving market is anticipated by many. Beef demand has never been better, otherwise how could the industry sell a record amount of beef in January at the third highest price in history?” The good news is beef processing challenges will center around how soon, and at what volume, processors will begin to fill orders to serve the foodservice and restaurant industry, not for lack of demand. Consumers’ loyalty to beef has not waivered. The trickle-down message to those of us involved in beef production is we simply can’t blink. The tools to make every calf crop better than the last are available to any beef producer. Charolais producers’ commercial customers recognize value. A commercial cow-calf producer doesn’t need to understand the complicated math behind the curtain of expected progeny differences, genomic data or the terminal sire index. Why? Because they trust that progressive Charolais seedstock producers are using the available technology and tools to make genetic improvements in their herds. Cattle feeders, now more than ever before, trust the Charolais breed’s inherent genetics to add value and not just pounds. Few will argue the wide acceptance over generations of smokey cattle in feed yards. Before we had tools to measure and make genetic improvements, Charolais and Charolais-influence was predictable

embryo transfer became more popular and affordable. Breed associations turned to land grant universities to develop a genetic evaluation tool which relied on phenotypic progeny data, more specifically weights. In the 80s, breeds began to publish sire summaries, comparing the most popular A.I. sires. To say these new-fangled tools were met with great trepidation is a gross understatement! Fast forward to the present and the tools available to registered and commercial producers today were unimaginable a short 50 years ago. This past year has proven demand for quality beef is real. When challenged beyond anything experienced in a century, consumers still shopped for beef. In many operations, consumers actually met the ranchers producing their beef as farm to fork businesses exploded across the country. We have a breed of cattle that greatly contributes to the beef industry. The producers behind those cattle and our breed are gigantic stakeholders who have tremendous investments over generations. As we move into a new year, a new breeding and calving season and, by all indications, a more stable and bullish cattle market, it’s important to remember that demand and acceptance for beef starts in your pastures.

AmericanInternational Charolais Association The AICA is the official registry for Charolais and Charbray cattle in the United States. Charolais cattle were first brought to the U.S. in 1936. In 1957, the American Charolais Breeders Association and the International Charolais Breeders Association merged forming the present AICA. Membership in the AICA is obtainable when the applicant has ownership in at least one animal, and has paid the initial membership fee of $125. AICA annual dues are $100.

Export Your Data for Sale Catalogs Under the “tools” tab, you will find a new “Data Export” button. This data export gives you the flexibility to export data on animals in your herd and use those data files in your own management packages. You can download and save the files directly to your computer in a CSV (can be opened in Excel) format. There are many options within this feature including selecting the type of animal to export and specific data. Female Enrollments

Female enrollments for 2021 are open January 1, 2021. Regardless of the program you choose, your active females should be enrolled. There are 2 enrollment programs: WHR – Each active female is enrolled at $14 until April 1. For the $14 you get the registration and transfer of the calf born in 2021. You will also get EPDs on unregistered calf with weight data in valid contemporary groups. The enrollment fee goes up after April 1. PPR – Each active female is enrolled, however there is no fee attached to the enrollment. You will pay the traditional registration and transfer fees as you register and transfer the calves, depending on the age of the calf. EPDs on unregistered calves is not part of the PPR program. 2021 Reminder Annual dues reminders were mailed in November. Active members – $100; junior member – $25. Junior member Charolais Journal subscriptions are an additional $25. Be sure to update all contact information including e-mails and websites. If dues are not renewed for 2021, online passwords will not work. Year letter for 2021 is J.

update the records as you add weaning and yearling data. Register the calves at any time by adding their name. ONLINE TIPS

Transfers cannot be done on-line if the paper has already been issued. The original paper must be returned to AICA. Animals registered on-line can be held in the system for transfer or print later. Many members find it helpful to hold all the newly registered animals in the system. No need to chase papers around. When using a non-Charolais parent, follow the example given on the entry screen. For a non-Charolais female type FNF-XXXX, for a non-Charolais male type FNM-XXXX. You may also use breed codes to indicate the breed of the non-Charolais animal but be sure to use 4 digits (example: FNM-ANAN). We can add the pedigree of your other breed animal but need a copy of the pedigree 1st. The fee to add a pedigree is $20. Be sure to click the “register” box and the “save” button at the bottom of the registration screen if you want the animal registered. The registration number will pop up in the middle of the screen or you’ll get an error message telling you what boxes you have missed. New ONLINE Lab Results

New online lab results! View your lab results with one click. Under the “herd” tab, click into “My Lab”. Your DNA tested animals will be listed there. Click the “view” button to see details on each animal. You can also download the results in an Excel file by using the “Lab Test Results Export” under the “tools” tab. Expedited Registration Work

If an animal needs to be registered with in a day or two. A rush fee of $50 will be added to work. Once the animal is registered you can pull it up online to view the registration number. The new certificate will be mailed out the following day. We also offer Fed-Ex mailing for additional $50. AICA DNA Requirements

AI Sires used “out of herd” and all Donor Dams must be DNA tested before calves can be registered. AICA recommends collecting DNA samples during the donor’s initial flush. Check the animal’s record to make sure the DNA work has been done before submitting registration papers. DNA kits are specific to the animal being tested. Contact Marilou Wegner to request a kit. AICA rules require signatures on bulls and dams you do not own. Signatures can be submitted online, fax, mail or e-mail.

H

ello! My name is Katie Cape your new AIJCA Area 7 Director. I am from Hampstead, Maryland where I originally grew up on a Holstein and Jersey dairy farm. When my family’s operation ended, our pastures quickly filled up with Charolais cattle, and we haven’t looked back since. Needless to say, I am beyond excited and extremely grateful for the opportunity to represent Charolais showman in the Northeastern states and be a part of this amazing association.

Q: Where was your first Junior National? A: Unlike many, my first Charolais Junior Nationals was

rather recent and took place in Des Moines, Iowa in 2018. From my own experience, I hope to aspire newer, yet older junior members to become as involved in the Charolais industry as they possibly can. Age is simply a number and does not affect your ability to do great things.

the inspiring stories previous board member Rachael Hockenbery shared with me. I learned that being a part of and on the board is an incredible opportunity that teaches not only multiple lifelong skills, but also offers friendships.

Q: What do you look forward to most about the Junior National?

A: Every year, a group of east coast showman, their families and I travel twenty or more hours to get to Charolais Junior National. Although, the drive is long and on occasion boring, I absolutely love the feeling of when we first pull into the fairgrounds. Trailers are lined up everywhere, freaky good cattle are walking around and smiling faces greet you in every direction. Collectively, a strong sense of family surrounds and fills the barns. Regardless of where you come from on the map, we are all united by the Charolais breed and treat each other with enormous respect. I for one, love this feeling and look forward to it each year.

Q: What is your favorite Junior National contest? Q: What accomplishments are you most proud of? A: Each year at Junior National, I look forward to being able to participate alongside amazing showman during A: In terms of the Charolais breed, I am extremely proud

of myself and feel accomplished in the idea that I have had the opportunity to show amongst incredible showman and competitive breeders out West. Regardless of my placement in the showring, I always feel reassured by the fact that I have worked my hardest and tried my best. In those moments, I simply feel blessed and grateful for the chances Q: What is your favorite memory from Junior I have been given to show alongside the best of the best. This in itself is a major accomplishment in my eyes. National?

Showmanship. It truly is my favorite contest, because I am able to witness firsthand the power, strength, passion and determination held by fellow Charolais enthusiasts. Often, I am left speechless at the accuracy and precision displayed in the ring by showman of various ages.

A: My favorite memory from Charolais Junior Nationals Q:

What are you planning on doing after you was the moment when Rachael Hockenbery in 2018 graduate college? received the Chad Clark Memorial Outstanding Senior Member Award. Rachael deserved this award more than A: My answer to this question often raises some eyebrows anyone I knew, and I aspire to leave an impact on the in the cattle industry; however, I am extremely excited about my future career plans. As of right now, upon the Charolais breed and juniors just as she had. completion of my biology undergrad at Delaware Valley Q: Who inspired you to become a Junior Board University, I plan to apply to University of Maryland’s Dental School Program, in efforts to become an orthodontist. Member?

A: I was advised by Matt Bauerlein to run for the Junior Q: What advice would you give a junior member Board. He not only makes it possible for me to attend just starting in the Charolais Breed? Junior National each year, but he also introduced me to the Charolais breed. I took his suggestion to heart and it pushed A: Believe in yourself. As long as you try your best you are me to become more active in the association. Additionally, destined for growth and greatness. the idea really hit home for me when I remembered all 32  

Why Not

Use a Registered Charolais Bull? If your goal, as a beef producer, is to market a calf with wide market acceptance, why not use a registered Charolais bull? In a recent analysis of seven years of extensive Superior Livestock video auction marketing data including more than two million head of cattle, Charolaissired steer calves outsold all other English-Continental breed cross steers by $3.73 per hundred weight.1 Use genetic verification through CharAdvantage to earn more premiums.

Calf scours are not inevitable. A strong prevention program is non-negotiable. Dependable scour prevention is essential for calf welfare, employee morale and business profitability. The immune system’s response to vaccination is variable and unpredictable. That’s why giving preformed antibodies instead of relying on a vaccine to stimulate antibody production is so important. I’m all for removing uncertainties. So yes, I stand by this product. (And no, I’m not.)

The saying “nuts, butts, and guts” is exactly what this bull is. He is backed by a tremendously productive cow that has produced a $24,000 half-interest heifer and a full brother to Honey Badger that commanded $28,000 for half interest. There’s no guessing in this powerhouse. Retaining 1/3 semen interest.

52nd National Charolais Show 42nd National Charolais Sale Cattlemen’s Congress, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma January 9 – 10, 2021

Early fall brought news that major winter livestock shows were cancelling due to COVID-19 concerns and restraints. This created a certain dilemma for the location and scheduling of the 2021 National Charolais events. In response to the cancellations, a determined and resilient group of cattlemen established an event – Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City – long steeped in Western Heritage – to provide a replacement event focused on the beef cattle industry. After due consideration, those 2021 National Charolais events were relocated. The Cattlemen’s Congress, held at the Oklahoma State Fair Park, January 2 – 17, hosted sixteen breeds with 9,627 entries from exhibitors representing 44 states and Canada. Seventeen sales held at the location and another 6 off-site associated sales generated over $10 Million in live animal and genetic sales. Charolais activities kicked off on Saturday, January 9th with the National ROE Pen Show. Nine pens from 4 states competed. The 42nd National Sale followed seeing 33 operations from 14 states and Canada making seedstock selections. A highly competitive Junior Heifer Show kicked off Sunday, January 10th activity with 24 Percentage and 100 Purebred Charolais Heifers checked-in. Followed by the 52nd National Charolais Show that saw exhibitors from 26 states and Canada checking in 167 entries. A great National and kick-off to the New Year!

Herdsman of the Year

D

( l to r) Albert Stone, 52nd National Herdsman of the Year; Ethel Kelley, 39th National Herdsman of the Year (wife of the late Ted Kelley, 1969 Herdsman of the Year); Jared Boyert, 51st National Herdsman of the Year; and Emily Meyer, Miss Charolais USA 2021.

efining the work of a herdsman with Paul Harvey’s poem, “God Made a Farmer,” Albert Stone speaks fondly of the life he’s spent as a caretaker of God’s creatures - working among families and friends in an industry that has allowed him to do what he enjoys doing - everyday. Named in mid-January as recipient of the Ted Kelley Memorial Herdsman of the Year award, the 67-year-old Stone admits taking some ribbing for being the “oldest” recipient of the honor, but also chides of being blessed with many friends and acquaintances over the years and the opportunity to “enjoy what I do.” Born and raised in his family’s Horned Hereford business, the native of Cleburne, Texas has been doing what he loves for nearly 60 years. Starting with 4-H and FFA projects as a boy in Johnson County, his first opportunity came right out of high school when he began working with his friend and fellow 4-H’er, Jimmy Atlas on Chisolm Trail Ranch in Rhome, Texas. “Jimmy was about four years older than me and I started working in the show barn with him,” said Stone. “It was what I always wanted to do and off I went. A lifetime later, I’m still doing what I love to do.” Stone names Atlas, along with Ted Kelley, Stan Cross and LaRue Douglas (all past Herdsman of the Year) as among some

72  

F E B R U A R Y 2021

of the most instrumental people in his life. As his career progressed, he accepted a position in the 1980s with White Wheel Charolais Ranch in Rankin, Ill. “People said I wouldn’t make it through the winters,” laughed Stone, noting that he stayed with the Wheeler outfit for 17 years, leaving only because the elderly couple decided to disperse the herd. Coming back to Texas, Stone now works for the F Bar 5 in Telephone, where the Field’s family ranch is just three miles off the Red River near Sherman. “I’m still doing what I love to do and working for a very good family,” said Stone. “Cattle have taken me everywhere,” he added in reminiscing of his long career which has included showing numerous champions, judging national junior shows for the Charolais and Saler breeds as well as several state fairs. Stone was presented the 52nd national herdsman award during the National Charolais Show held Jan. 10 as part of the inaugural Cattlemen’s Congress held in Oklahoma City. “They got to give me a haircut,” he said referring to the gathering of past honorees who shaved his head at the conclusion of the show. “It was fun! It’s tradition. It’s part of it.”

(l to r) Larry and Beth Ludeke, Miss Charolais USA, Emily Meyer, Mike Schumacher, AICA Board President and Neil Orth, AICA Executive Vice President

ucked away south of the historic Houston Astrodome in the small town of Liverpool, Texas, you will find Bar J Charolais, owned and operated by Larry and Beth Ludeke. Larry Ludeke’s enthusiasm for the Charolais breed began when his local FFA chapter visited the 1966 San Antonio Livestock Show Calf Scramble. After earning a $200 Calf Scramble certificate, he purchased his first Charolais bull. Fast forward to 2001, Larry and his wife Beth, closed on their ranch ranch near Liverpool, Texas, today known as Bar J Charolais. In the spring of 2002 Larry selected a package of 20 females from Robert and Modena Jernigan in east Texas – pioneer Charolais breeders and sale manager. That same year, Larry attended the Houston Livestock Show confirming that livestock shows presented a great opportunity to add visibility to his Charolais program. In 2003, Bar J exhibited two heifers at the Houston Livestock Show. Since the beginning, Bar J Charolais has campaigned seedstock genetics at major shows across the country. Success includes qualifying 5 herd bulls as Roll of Excellence Sires; 4 AICA Show Bulls of the Year; and numerous AICA Show Bull, Female, Dam and Sire Top 10 placings. Today at Bar J Charolais Larry has built up his local commercial bull market, where he sells the majority his bulls through private treaty and enjoys having customers come out to the farm and look through his cattle. He hopes by sharing his

passion for the breed he can create an interest in others for the Charolais breed. Larry’s key selection traits for bulls includes being sound at the ground, having the ability to travel as well as low birth weights. Charolais bulls offer so much in terms of heterosis and vigor, the rest will fall into place, he said. Larry said he couldn’t think of another animal as a herd bull that would do more for any kind of cow. Bar J also has taken advantage of their southern geographical location exploring international trade options with bull buyers from Mexico, where they typically sell three or four shipments each year. Besides the breeding and seedstock side of Bar J Charolais, the Ludeke’s also own and operate their meat store Bar J Artisan Meats, LLC., in Houston, Texas, where they market and sell Wagyu x Charolais beef. Larry has been active in leading AICA serving on the Board of Directors and being both Vice President and President of the board. Currently he is the President of the ACF Board of Directors and Chairman of the AICA Finance Committee. Larry along with partners, JVS Cattle Company have actively supported ACF donating the Foundation Heifer for the 39th National Sale (she finished #5 Show Female of the Year), purchasing the 41st National Sale Foundation Female and again donating the the Foundation Heifer for the 42nd National Sale.

he would never have survived the disease, and the treatments, without her loving support. Her family became Carl’s family and they loved him dearly, as well. To know Carl was to love Carl… Carl is survived by his loving wife, Penny Rugg and their family - Christopher and his wife, Ashley Moore, Matthew and his wife Stephanie Moore, and Shannon and her husband, Matthew Steward. He is also survived by their grandchildren Laynie Moore, Kelsie Moore, Westin Moore, Brooklynn Moore, and Quinnley Steward - all of whom loved their Grampy. He is also survived by his siblings Myrna Jean Rugg and her husband Richard Cronn, Denise Settle and her husband Greg Settle, Betsy McGinn and her husband Bryan McGinn and Lynette Bartlett and her husband Paul Bartlett. Carl will also be missed by his loving pets Chesney, Sophia, and Allie. Carl has now been reunited in heaven with his loving parents Charlotte and Gordon. He will be missed, but never forgotten. Obituary

Ronald Lee Teague, 73, of Siler City, North Carolina, passed away on December 29th, 2020 peacefully surrounded by family and love.

Obituary

Carl Rugg, 68, of College Station, Texas entered the kingdom of his Lord and Savior on Christmas Day, 2020. A native of New York, Carl was born to Gordon and Charlotte Rugg in Buffalo, New York. He learned the value of hard work from his father and was still working actively at the time of his passing. As a young boy in the Buffalo area, he trapped muskrat, hunted, and worked in the family dairy business. This was the start of a career in the cattle industry where he was known, loved, and respected by his many clients both in the US and abroad. Carl received his undergraduate degree from Cornell University and earned his Master’s degree at Colorado State University in Bovine Reproductive Physiology. He founded Bovine Elite in College Station which he owned and operated until his passing. For many years, Carl was an avid motorcyclist. In one two-year period, he rode through all 48 states in the contiguous United States. He was a skilled rider of Harley Davidson motorcycles and spent much of his free time riding throughout Texas and the Rocky Mountains with his friends. Later in life, Carl became a competitive shooter and participated in many matches. He was a Lifetime Member of the NRA and collected many beautiful handguns and rifles. He also played golf avidly and was a member of Pebble Creek Country Club where he will be missed greatly. His greatest love, however, was his dear wife and best friend Penny. They were married on a beautiful beach in Cancun, Mexico with friends and family in attendance. Their love and devotion for one another was inspiring; they were truly meant for each other and loved each other immensely. Penny was right by Carl’s side during his battle with leukemia and he often said

Ronald Lee, born to Pearlyman and Alma Teague, took his first breath on May 20, 1947. Ronald Lee was a force to be reckoned with from the get go, graduating from Nashville Auto Diesel College in Nashville, Tennessee. He pursued and was awarded a degree in Welding and Fabrication. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, Seabees, giving 2 years of service before being honorably discharged and going into the Reserves. In 1966, he married the love of his life Deborah Sue Teague. Ronald Lee and Sue went on to have three sons, Brian, Michael, Jeffrey, and daughter, Lisa. He then took on the challenges of managing a service station, operating a family owned Trucking Company to live a life on the road. After this, Ronald Lee and son Brian purchased their first herd of cattle and this grew into the family owned and operated business, Teague Farms. Teague Farms was honored as 2019 American-International Charolais Association’s Commercial Producer of the Year. This became his passion in life along with having his family by his side. Ronald Lee was predeceased by parents, Pearlyman and Alma Teague, and one brother, Raymond Teague. He is survived by wife of 55 years, Deborah Sue Teague, sons, Brian (Ginger), Michael (Dana), Jeffrey (Ginger), Daughter, Lisa (Zach) all of Siler City. Grandchildren, Cori, Lane, Brayden, Peyton, Parker, Brenna, Cooper, and Mason. Brothers, Ralph (Jane) of Midland, NC, Roger (Pam) of Wrightsville Beach, NC and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
