CHAROLAIS Whole Herd Rewards (WHR)—
No Such Thing as Too Much Data
T
he AICA board of directors voted to implement Whole Herd Rewards (WHR) and Performance Plus Registration (PPR) 17 years ago. At the time, there were many known benefits of converting to a reporting system that included all producing females in a producer’s herd. Across the industry, the trend was rapidly increasing toward more data to enable the development of more genetic evaluation tools. The change wasn’t without dissent. Progress never is. WHR was intended to be progressive, not prophetic. The WHR goal, as originally stated, “The American-International Charolais Association has adopted the whole herd inventory-reporting concept. At the beginning of each year, each participating AICA member of the Performance Plus Registry or the Whole Herd Rewards program will complete and bring current their herd
Meeting, Dr. Sally Northcutt, Method Genetics, presented an update on udder score research. Since WHR’s implementation, remarkably, breeders have submitted more than 84,000 teat and udder scores on their females. Northcutt analyzed the data using a model that accounted for the age of the female, contemporary group differences and environmental effects. More than 75,000 EPDs were produced using the udder score dataset and a three-generation pedigree. Using the large dataset, genetic parameters and EPDs, an initial genetic trend for udder traits was developed, indicating year over year improvement. A point that can’t be stressed enough is the importance of phenotypic data. Although we didn’t have a reliable mathematical model to quantify the value of teat and udder scores when we
“The more accurate the tools, the more trust is ultimately earned with commercial cow-calf producers.” inventory along with other information on every cow in the herd. This information will not only be useful for improving the accuracy of current EPDs but also in developing EPDs for additional traits that are economically important to cow-calf producers, such as traits that impact reproduction.” Fast forward to 2019 and AICA members deserve to be commended for increased WHR participation every year. Before WHR and PPR, AICA provided a standard suite of expected progeny differences (EPDs) that included birth weight, weaning and yearling weight, milk and scrotal. Ultrasound data enabled the development of more relevant end product merit traits such as carcass weight, ribeye, fat and marbling, as well as improving the accuracy of original traits. The evolution of genomic testing added another level of accuracy to genetic evaluation tools. One of the most important factors in determining whether a cow stays in the herd, or not, is udder quality. Most every producer will attest to the fact that open cows or dead calves aren’t profitable! However, they’ll also agree that if the cow can’t provide nourishment for the calf, the end result is about the same. To date, one other breed association has developed an EPD to predict cow longevity using teat and udder scores. During the October 2018 Breed Improvement Committee
began collecting the data, AICA now has a sizable, and valuable, dataset. Since December 2017 (Spring 2018 evaluation), AICA has used Single Step genomic evaluation, resulting in greater accuracy, particularly for younger animals. Until now, AICA conducted genetic evaluations in the fall and spring each year. Genetic evaluations will be calculated six times in 2019, providing near real-time updates. Arguably, the larger issue is to provide accurate and reliable tools so that registered producers can make informed decisions by applying selection pressure to make genetic improvements across a population of cattle. The more accurate the tools, the more trust is ultimately earned with commercial cow-calf producers. Charolais breeders enrolled in WHR and PPR are to be commended for continuing to submit teat and udder scores on their females. This growing dataset will serve as a foundation as we develop genetic evaluation tools designed to influence reproduction in Charolais females. The future of genetic evaluation across all breeds will require more and more data. It’s safe to assume there’s no such thing as too much data!

Leland Monte “Lee” Alexander passed away peacefully on Christmas Day 2018 at age 97 surrounded by his family. Lee was born on February 21st, 1921 in Ashton, Idaho to Jess and Jesse Alexander. One of seven children, he began working at an early age to help support himself and his family during the depression. He met Lou Stroud in Idaho Falls, ID and they married in 1940. They were married 67 years until her death in 2008. Lee served in the Army’s 11th Airborne Division as a Paratrooper in the Pacific Theater during World War II. After returning from the war he started farming and driving truck. He continued working hard throughout his life – eventually starting a roofing business, which became L.W. Vail Company, a road construction and paving business located in the Pacific Northwest. After he sold his construction business in 1977, he continued to farm and run cattle. Lee was also a lifelong horse lover and he and an uncle started the VA Quarter Horse Ranch, raising both working and racing Quarter Horses. The ranch owned and stood the two well-known Quarter Horse studs, Ricky Taylor and Old Tom Cat. Lee had used Charolais bulls on his commercial cattle herd with great success for years and in 1969 a purebred herd was started with 20 Charolais heifers under the name Alexander Charolais. Over the years the commercial cows were sold to focus on his purebred cattle and the herd grew to over 250 purebred cows. The cattle were wintered on corn stalks in Pasco, WA and trucked 250 miles to summer on the ranch outside of Kamiah, ID. Lee had a love of the outdoors which included building his own log cabin, elk and deer hunting, and fishing of all kinds. Once the crops were in the ground in the spring, he loaded up his camper and headed to the Midwest where he attended the LT and Wienk bull sales, fishing along the way. Lee was a member of the original Western Charolais Association, Northwest Charolais Association and the AICA. Lee is survived by his six children, Dora Dee Alexander, Lola Brown, Bonnie Avila, Alan (Leslie) Alexander, Billie (Steve) McSwan, and Bobbie (David) Fischer, 18 Grandchildren, and numerous Great and Great-Great Grandchildren, his sister Wanda Carruthers and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife - Lou, his parents - Jess and Jesse, his brothers - Ern, Bud and Ted, sisters - Cordy and Gay, and grandson Robby Lee. The family would like to say “Thank You” to the caregivers at Hawthorne Court who provided him with such loving care, especially in his last months. A “Celebration of Lee’s Life” will be held later this Spring. Burial was at Desert Lawn Memorial Park in Kennewick, WA.
Lois Yvonne Hubert passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2019, at the age of 92. Lois was born March 5, 1926, in Upland, Nebraska, to Gust A. and Frances (Danielsen) Jameson. Lois attended Upland Schools until she transferred to Minden High School her senior year and graduated in 1944. After graduating she worked at Wright Patterson Army Base in Dayton, Ohio. On April 6, 1947 she married Delton W. Hubert. They lived in Kearney, NE while Delton finished his schooling. They moved to Kansas in 1950 and farmed and ranched in the Oakley, Monument, Winona area. Lois was a member of the Monument Mothers Club, Immanuel Lutheran Church and the American International Charolais Association. She was a homemaker and along with her husband raised their seven children, Susan (Rich) Pfannenstiel, Ozawkie, KS; Greg (Brenda) Hubert, Oakley, KS; Lynne Wheeler, Fort Scott, KS; Dianne (Steve) Swanson, Bay, MO; David (Shelby) Hubert, Oakley, KS; Randall (Toni) Hubert, Garden Plain, KS and Tim (Michelle) Hubert, Oakley, KS. She was also blessed with 15 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Delton; her parents; two sisters, Hazel Schroeder and Ruby Cole and her son-in-law Rex Wheeler. Lester C. Laue died December 16, 2018, at his ranch near Hanover, Kansas. He was 89 years old. Lester was born on the family farm south of Hanover on August 7, 1929, to Lawrence and Alvena Laue. He attended Willowdale country school, and graduated from Hanover High School in 1947. He served in the United States Navy as a Chief Petty Officer aboard the USS Comstock in the Korean War. On April 5, 1959, he married LeAnna Jandera at Zion Lutheran Church in Hanover. Lester’s childhood dream was to breed purebred cattle. Using leased land and handmade feed bunks, he started with a registered Hereford bull. In 1959, that bull fell into the icy waters of the Little Blue River, leading to a decision that would change his life forever. Lester replaced the ill-fated Hereford with a new Charolais bull — one of the first in Kansas. It was the beginning of what would become Laue Charolais Ranch. In 1967, he imported the first fullblood Charolais bulls from Canada to America. One of them, named “Beau Ivo,” set world records for yearling weight and auction price in 1968, and was named “Bull of the Year.” For nearly 60 years, he marketed purebred cattle to over 30 states, Canada, and Mexico. Lester lived a life of service in agriculture and his community, as the first continued on page 77

This may be the most incredible WC Milestone son we have ever produced! He is smooth shouldered, great bodied with a big square hip and attractive look. Of course his sire WC Milestone attracted everyone’s attention when he walked through the 2016 Wright Charolais Bull Sale at $125,000 for one-half interest and possession. His dam, WC Pearl 4030 is an excellent daughter of Rushmore we are keeping an eye on that is easy-keeping and great uddered. She goes back on the maternal side of her pedigree to the Pearl cow family that has performed and sold at high levels.

This Milestone son has the distinction of being out of a brood cow who flat gets it done. This will be her third purebred herd sire she has produced! The first sold to Kerry Clift in Washington and the second to Ronnie Geralds, Kentucky & Bill Garrett, Tennessee. In all she has produced four bull calves all with weaning weights hovering near or over 800 lbs. each. This son also has the EPDs to fix some numbers for your cow herd.

The power of Milestone just keeps it going with a ¾ brother to WC Ignition 8273 on the previous page that has loads of muscle shape and near 800 pound weaning. His outstanding dam was the high-selling bred cow in this past December’s 2018 Female Sale to Greer Charolais in Texas. She has previously produced a $10,000 herd sire selling to Troy Hullinger, Davis City, Iowa during our 2017 Wright Charolais Bull Sale. She has done the job each and every year producing four sons that have had adjusted weaning weights of 744, 759, 781 and 796 pounds!!!

WC Happy Hour 8245 is an ultra-complete bull with no holes in him. He is another great herd sire prospect from the Clarice J139 cow line. His fantastic dam by Ledger was born on January 2, 2014 and has calved 2-216, 2-8-17 & 1-18-18 with adjusted weaning weights starting with the first calf at 670 lbs., then 797 lbs. and now this bull 831 lbs. The first sons of WC Executive are pushing the scales down hard and are powerful bulls. This one headlines the group when his WC Up The Limit first-calf-heifer dam raised him to an 840 lbs. adjusted weaning weight! His sire is the maternal brother to WC Milestone 5223 the $125,000 one-half interest bull and WC Executive 6211 was the next calf she raised and he sold for $110,000 one-half interest! There is not many cows in any breed that have produced two sons that have sold for over $100,000! Those two herd sires had adjusted weaning weights of 861 and 848 lbs. The maternal grand dam of this bull #8049, LT Duchess of Mac 7076 is the dam of two popular herd sires in the breed LT Silver Edge 2289 and LT Western Edge 4057.

WC Double Up 4128 P ET – Sire of WC Double Time 8079 This herd sire prospect is the #1 adjusted weaning weight bull out of all the first-calfheifers with an 889 pound weaning weight to ratio 118 out of 30 contemporaries! His impressive Resource dam is one of the most eye catching females in the herd with a bright future ahead of her. We’ve been calving WC Double Up 4128 daughters now and they are tremendous. Use this herd sire with his 68 lbs. birthweight on your firstcalf-heifers for marketable sons and keep all the daughters for heavy milking brood cows in the future.
This big, stout, power bull has exceeded all expectations from a storied dam, sire and grandparents down the line! His dam was the first Outsider to be born and the first to hit the shows and WIN BIG! Conley Nancy D6 as a yearling heifer was the 2017 48th National Reserve Grand Champion Female and the first Outsider sired progeny to be named such. In September 2018 a one-half interest in her sold for $20,000. With his 75 lbs. birthweight, 1,000 plus weaning weight and this pedigree tabulation, all signs point towards more winning progeny. Consigned with Derry’s fishing buddy Connor Kisner.

It’s no secret the effect that M&M Outsider 4003 has had on the breed in the last two years. His progeny have dominated the show and sale rings. The quality and future of this herd sire prospect will also gather the attention and potential bidders on sale day and quite possibly his day on the tanbark will also be there. He has already had many friends visiting the ranch and will too at Denver Pen Show. His dam has been one of the most successful donors for her owners for several years now. This is the tried and true genetic mating of Rushmore x Blue Value! We have multiplied this combination as many times as we can. His dam was the first Blue Value daughter born and she is still cranking them out at ten years of age. Her last calf before this one was a member of the 2018 Denver Reserve Grand Champion Pen-of-Five Bulls. He sold to Morrison Charolais in Arkansas at $8,500 and had an 823 lbs. adjusted weaning weight. She has upped her game this time with this hugebodied, powerful breeding bull here!

Yes sir – A Full Brother to Resource!!! Not only will this herd sire be a full brother to the great Resource, but has weaning performance that is even better! The Resource sons were the hit of the sale last year when sons sold for $157,500, $29,000 & $85,000 all for only one-half interest! There is a lot of genetic power in this pedigree. If you’re looking to add performance, popular genetics, heritage and phenotype, stop right here.
One of our favorites for his perfect build and look. And then you look at the power he has with a birth to growth spread that it takes to be a serious herd sire prospect. He descends from the popular Miss Alliance 428 cow family that brought us Redemption. His dam also produced WC Face Value 5321 that’s now working at the Reis Charolais herd in California. This older fall prospect has a CE EPD in the top 3% of the breed, WW in the top 15%, Maternal in the top 9% of the breed coupled with a low, low birthweight of 62 lbs. and an 871 lbs. adjusted weaning weight. It’s all here for the taking.

Another of our older fall 2017 herd sire prospects that will garner attention at the sale. This Rushmore son packs a lot of punch into his numbers from his 68 lbs. birthweight, to his 856 lbs. adjusted weaning weight, to his EPD profile and pedigree tabulation. His dam is a special Long Distance daughter out of Blue Values dam - the Unlimited Maid 7184 donor, one of the breed’s heaviest milking females. Her first two daughters are impressive females in their own right today, and this son #7547 will impress all.

Unreal birth to growth spread! The Clarice cow family is no secret in the Charolais breed. The predictability of not only the Clarice genetic pool, but also of the Rushmore, Brenda’s and Duke 914 blood flows with consistency and power. This herd sire prospect is big bodied and heavy muscled. His impressive dam is a favorite on all visitors to Wright Charolais. They have just calved his equally impressive full sister and everything looks for another great one there. DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION LONGRANGE® (eprinomectin) should be given only by subcutaneous injection in front of the shoulder at the recommended dosage level of 1 mg eprinomectin per kg body weight (1 mL per 110 lb body weight). WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS Withdrawal Periods and Residue Warnings Animals intended for human consumption must not be slaughtered within 48 days of the last treatment. This drug product is not approved for use in female dairy cattle 20 months of age or older, including dry dairy cows. Use in these cattle may cause drug residues in milk and/or in calves born to these cows. A withdrawal period has not been established for pre-ruminating calves. Do not use in calves to be processed for veal. Animal Safety Warnings and Precautions The product is likely to cause tissue damage at the site of injection, including possible granulomas and necrosis. These reactions have disappeared without treatment. Local tissue reaction may result in trim loss of edible tissue at slaughter. Observe cattle for injection site reactions. If injection site reactions are suspected, consult your veterinarian. This product is not for intravenous or intramuscular use. Protect product from light. LONGRANGE® (eprinomectin) has been developed specifically for use in cattle only. This product should not be used in other animal species. When to Treat Cattle with Grubs LONGRANGE effectively controls all stages of cattle grubs. However, proper timing of treatment is important. For the most effective results, cattle should be treated as soon as possible after the end of the heel fly (warble fly) season. Environmental Hazards Not for use in cattle managed in feedlots or under intensive rotational grazing because the environmental impact has not been evaluated for these scenarios. Other Warnings: Underdosing and/or subtherapeutic concentrations of extendedrelease anthelmintic products may encourage the development of parasite resistance. It is recommended that parasite resistance be monitored following the use of any anthelmintic with the use of a fecal egg count reduction test program. TARGET ANIMAL SAFETY Clinical studies have demonstrated the wide margin of safety of LONGRANGE® (eprinomectin). Overdosing at 3 to 5 times the recommended dose resulted in a statistically significant reduction in average weight gain when compared to the group tested at label dose. Treatment-related lesions observed in most cattle administered the product included swelling, hyperemia, or necrosis in the subcutaneous tissue of the skin. The administration of LONGRANGE at 3 times the recommended therapeutic dose had no adverse reproductive effects on beef cows at all stages of breeding or pregnancy or on their calves. Not for use in bulls, as reproductive safety testing has not been conducted in males intended for breeding or actively breeding. Not for use in calves less than 3 months of age because safety testing has not been conducted in calves less than 3 months of age. Importance of
Winter Water By Heather Smith Thomas

attle have to eat more food in cold weather to generate additional body heat. A great deal of body heat can be produced by the breakdown of forages in the rumen, due to the heat of digestion/fermentation. In order to process the additional feed, however, the digestive tract needs adequate fluid. A cow’s water requirement may not be as high in winter as in summer when she’s losing fluid (via sweating, panting, etc.) to help dissipate body heat, and needing additional fluid for lactation, but she needs to drink enough water in cold weather to handle the demands of ruminant digestion and increased metabolism, to prevent dehydration and impaction. Thus it is important to provide adequate water for livestock during cold weather or make sure they have adequate snow on winter pastures. Julie Walker, Beef Specialist, South Dakota State University says that if cattle don’t have water, they won’t eat much. Drinking and eating are closely correlated. If they don’t eat enough, they don’t have fuel to stay warm. “Fermentation in the rumen generates heat, and helps alleviate cold stress,” she says. Cattle always need water, and the more they eat, the more they must drink in order to process the feed. “It’s crucial to keep water sources open (not covered with ice), and make sure they have an adequate supply. We know that cows can eat snow, but they can’t eat it if it’s crusted over, and some cows don’t eat snow as readily as others.” Cattle generally learn to eat snow by mimicking other cows, or their mothers, if calves are wintering with their mothers. If you simply put a herd of cows out on winter pasture and they are not accustomed to eating snow, however, many are slow to learn and lose weight because they won’t eat enough if they don’t have enough fluid in the GI tract. “We can’t always depend on cattle utilizing snow for moisture,” says Walker. “They should always have a water source. Some cows may not come to it every day, if they choose to stay out and graze and lick snow, but it’s there when they want it. Some cows only come in for water every other day or so because snow consumption provides much of what they need. Research has shown that water consumption is around 6 gallons per day for pregnant dry cows at 40 degrees Fahrenheit. However, we don’t know how much water they actually need in these situations with snow providing part of the fluid requirement, because we can’t replicate nature in a research study. We just know that cows need adequate water (via snow or some other source) to prevent dehydration,” says Walker. Trey Patterson, PhD (nutritionist and Chief Operations Officer of Padlock Ranches in Wyoming) says that when using snow a rancher has to make sure the cattle don’t have excessive salt intake. Many mineral or protein supplements contain salt as a limiter, and this increases the cows’ water requirement. “When you provide supplement, make sure there’s not too much salt in it. You want to make sure cattle have adequate salt but not
excessive salt. You don’t want to do anything that would decrease their ability to use snow, yet at the same time you don’t want them deficient in salt. If they’re deficient, they won’t drink enough water or eat enough snow, and then they won’t eat enough,” he says. There’s a tight correlation between water intake and feed intake. You don’t want to artificially inflate water intake, but you need enough water or snow to maximize feed intake. “Cattle are on a low quality diet if they are out on winter range, and you want them eating as much as possible,” says Patterson. If you feed cattle it is imperative that cattle have enough fresh water for their needs. “If cattle are used to having adequate drinking water, you could
“One thing some people don’t realize is that when it gets really cold this doesn’t mean cows’ water requirement diminishes. In fact, it may increase because cows are eating more to try to generate more body heat. suffer some losses if they suddenly have to depend on snow. They need time to adapt to eating snow, and I don’t recommend that you completely pull water away from them,” he says. Certain cows need access to water if they refuse to eat snow. “We develop some of our replacement heifers on native range in the winter. I think it’s easier to merge these heifers into a combined system (snow and water) than heifers that have been in the feedlot. You can’t just kick them out on winter pastures and expect them to eat snow. They may lose a lot of condition which could have a negative effect on production,” says Patterson. “Usually in winter the cows are dry, and their water requirements are low. If you have pairs, either fall calving, or haven’t weaned your late summer calves yet, it’s unlikely that snow would be adequate for water requirements unless they grew up in this system and the snow is the right consistency to easily consume. But a dry cow in winter has lower water intake than a dry cow in summer or a lactating cow,” he says. “One thing some people don’t realize is that when it gets really cold this doesn’t mean cows’ water requirement diminishes. In fact, it may increase because cows are eating more to try to generate more body heat. Because of the correlation between water intake and feed intake you want to make sure they have adequate water,” he explains. In regions where extensive pastures don’t have available electricity for running a pump or tank heaters, there are several innovative options including solar power pumps and the frost-free nose pump. George Widdifield, Ranch Manager at the Western Beef
CHAROLAIS JOURNAL

Development Centre’s Research Ranch at Lanigan, Saskatchewan says their operation utilizes a frost-free nose pump and also a solar water system. “The solar-powered water system works off a motion detector. When cattle walk up to it, the pump starts running and they can drink from it. It runs for a short length of time and shuts off after they move away. This system runs the pump off a wet well that we put in from a dugout. The pump is down in that shallow well and doesn’t have to pump the water very far,” says Widdifield. This one has a 3-foot cribbing that goes down into the wet well, with a tub at the top that the water pumps into. “Once the pump shuts off, after the cow leaves, the water in that little tub drains back down into the wet well, so there is none left in the tub to freeze. We’ve never had any ice buildup in it, however, because it’s a black tub that holds heat from the sun,” he says. The ranch also uses another system that runs a pump with solar power from a regular ground well. “We run that water in an underground pipe about a quarter of a mile to a winterized trough that works off a float system. We put a trough that has 6 different drinking holes and you can cover or open as many as needed, depending on how many cows are watering from it. We’ve had very little trouble with this system,” he says. “Running from a well, the water line to the trough has to be down about 8 feet in our region so it won’t freeze. The trough itself is well insulated with about 6 inches of insulation. As long as there is fresh water coming into it all the time it doesn’t freeze. The drinking holes go down through the insulated cover.” The cattle drinking throughout the day, lowering the water level to activate the float valve and bring more water into the trough, usually keep it from freezing even during cold weather. Occasionally those holes freeze over at night when the cattle aren’t drinking much. “If it’s 40 below zero and the wind is blowing, we may have to go out in the morning and knock the ice out of the drinking tubes, but as long as there is fresh water coming into it regularly the trough won’t freeze up. When the cattle drink it down to a certain level the float activates the switch and water flows in. Once it gets full the switch kicks out and the water stops coming in,” he says. The ranch has many small groups of cattle because of the various research trials and different pens of cattle or pastures of cattle on grazing trials, so they depend on numerous water sources. “We have several different systems and also made some of our own insulated troughs because we 48
F E B R U A R Y 2019
have to haul water to different fields for the trials. As long as you put fresh water into them every day, they stay open for quite a long time in cold weather. The insulation makes a big difference,” says Widdifield. The ranch also has nose pumps. These consist of a vertical culvert set down into the ground to access water from a nearby dugout via an underground pipe from the bottom of the dugout to the wet well at the bottom of the upright culvert. A small drinking basin sits atop the culvert. A smaller pipe with a piston pump is inside the culvert, pumping water up to the basin when the cows push a lever with their nose. When the cow stops pumping, any water remaining in the upright pipe drains back down and there’s no water left in the pipe to freeze. “These work fine if you train cows to use it. We did it the suggested way, starting with just a few cows at a time, and they teach the others. There are different levels in the drain holes in the line, and when we are first training the cows we put it at the highest level (during warm weather with no danger of water freezing in the pipe) so it’s easy for them to pump it. After they learn, we lower the drain hole. After they know how to use it they will push it as hard as necessary to pump the water,” says Widdifield. “Even in summer when there is other water available there are still some cows that prefer to go pump that thing and have cool, clean water. It’s nice to have the cattle fenced away from the dugouts, watering with the nose pump or solar powered wet well, because they aren’t tromping in the dugout, damaging the banks, or contaminating the water. They aren’t getting footrot or spreading fecal-borne diseases. “If you can get your water source a little farther from your dugout you can keep the water cleaner,” he says. “With any of these systems you still have to check them regularly in the winter and make sure they are working and free of ice. With the solar-powered systems you have check and make sure the batteries stay good or the valve switch in the tank doesn’t get knocked off kilter, or the nose pump doesn’t build up ice on the push lever,” he says. “What I like about all of these systems—the solar power with the eye, or the nose pump—is that you don’t have to worry about cattle walking out on the dugout and falling through the ice. If you get a bunch of cows pushing and shoving each other out on the ice, they may fall through. Every year you hear about somebody losing cattle.” It is very important to monitor cows—and their water sources--through winter, and know if they are drinking enough and eating enough, and maintaining adequate body condition.

Winter Nutrition for BULLS
By Heather Smith Thomas
T
he bull supplies half the genetics for the calf crop so you want to make sure bulls are fertile, healthy and sound, in good body condition through winter. Young bulls are still growing, so they need adequate energy and protein to supply their needs for growth as well as maintenance and body condition, and body heat on a cold day. Winter feed requirements vary, depending on whether the bulls are weanlings, yearlings, 2-year-olds or mature. Dr. Bart Lardner (Research Scientist, Department of Animal and Poultry Science, University of Saskatchewan) says body condition is very important. Bulls need enough condition to do their job, without being too fat or too thin. They need adequate nutrition, which includes proper levels of energy, protein, minerals and vitamins. “These are the key. Generally the energy sources are carbohydrates from forages (hay and green feed) and concentrates like cereal grains. Protein sources include alfalfa hay and supplements like soybean meal, canola meal and DDG. We also need to pay attention to the necessary minerals, calciumphosphorus ratio, and trace minerals. Copper, zinc and manganese are the important trace minerals for fertility,” Lardner says. “For a weanling bull over winter, we want a diet with about 13 to 14% protein and about 60 to 65% energy (TDN). Then as these young bulls reach puberty we want to reduce that to about 10 or 11% protein and about 58% energy. Thus it is important to test your feeds to assess their nutrient levels; don’t just guess,” he says.
CHAROLAIS JOURNAL
F E B R U A R Y 2 0 1 9 53
Young bulls need adequate nutrition for growth and development. “You only have about 160 days from weaning until yearling age, and today we are seeing more yearling bulls offered for sale because seedstock producers don’t want to feed them for 2 years. It’s harder now to find 2-year-old bulls for sale,” says Lardner. “During that 160 days of development, producers should make sure those growing bulls have adequate protein and energy on a forage-based diet, with about 5 to 6 pounds of supplement per day. They will lose body condition (often as much as 200 pounds) during breeding season. A bull with high libido will be out doing his job, chasing after cows.” Thus you need to feed them adequately over winter to achieve the target weight goal and have some reserve fat as a buffer, but not too fat. “You want these bulls to be about 3.5 on a 1 to 5 scale (or about 6.5 to 7 on a 1 to 9 body condition scale), which equates to about 20% body fat. This is a good reserve for these bulls,” he says. Pay attention to their diet over winter to make sure they achieve this, and also make sure they have adequate water. If they are not drinking enough they will not be eating enough. “Most cow herds here are looking at the end of June as the start of breeding season, so we are monitoring bull condition coming out of winter and through the spring to make sure they have that extra bit of condition and adequate weight by breeding time. A young bull at the start of his first breeding season needs to be about 75 to 80% of his mature body weight, so you build the winter diet to meet those target points,” he says. Some producers are taking a little longer to grow their bulls, so they don’t have to push them so hard to be big enough to breed as yearlings, and are selling bulls at about 1.5 years of age. This can be a good compromise between selling yearlings (which often means overfeeding young bulls) and having to wait and sell 2-yearolds. This works nicely if a producer wants to calve in late spring or early summer, or fall calve, rather than having to calve in January/ February in order to have yearling bulls old enough to sell in an early spring sale. “That extra 6 months of age is certainly a benefit for ranchers when purchasing a young bull; this enables the bull go grow out some more and become more mature and ready to breed,” says Lardner. “Make sure that wherever the bulls are wintered they have adequate shelter and bedding, to prevent scrotal frostbite,” he says. Adequate windbreaks can also help reduce cold stress and reduce the need for a lot of extra feed to generate body heat. Over the years, breeders have learned about the detrimental effects of too much fat, and how it can create soundness problems and hinder fertility. “You don’t want to overfeed bulls, but you do want to meet their requirements for energy and protein—and this will vary depending on whether they are weanlings, yearlings, or 6-year-olds. Pay attention to body condition coming out of winter, and coming out of breeding season.” Some bulls lose a lot of weight during breeding season and need to be fed differently than mature bulls in adequate condition that can coast through winter on a maintenance ration. Most mature bulls don’t need grain. Good quality forages are generally adequate, depending on the genetics of the bulls. “A high quality grass-legume forage or green feed will do the job. The challenge can be finding those feeds, especially in a drought year; some years it is more difficult to find good forage, so each producer must figure out what can work best in a given situation. Postbreeding management is important, and it pays to start early, to allow thin bulls to put the weight back on gradually,” says Lardner. You want the bull to be back in proper body condition before cold weather. Winter nutrition needs to start in the fall.

“With Safe-Guard, they bounced back like you’d just put them on feed.” ®
Eddie Parker chooses Safe-Guard® dewormer for efficacy and ease of use.
“Switching to Safe-Guard is one of the best things we ever did.”
Eddie had his first bout with resistance when he found out his endectocide dewormer just wasn’t cutting it. Two months later, his cattle were still riddled with worms. So, he treated his cattle with Safe-Guard ®. Sure enough, they bounced back. That’s because Safe-Guard ® acts fast 1 so cattle can get the most from their feed.
RESIDUE WARNING: Cattle must not be slaughtered within 13 days following last treatment. For dairy cattle, the milk discard time is zero hours. Wakefield Farms Family Farming Since 1937 — Charolais Seedstock Since 1962 A name you can trust for Performance Tested Charolais and Red Angus Bulls
For today’s bull buyers, there is a tremendous amount of “Fluff” to sort through when choosing who to buy bulls from. We try to stick to the facts! Fact 1 – NO ONE has produced more Charolais bull test winners in the Midwest than us! Fact 2 – A true measure of your cattle is putting them in a centralized test and comparing them against other cattle. This is where performance data is most accurate (not on farm tests). If you are looking for bulls that are bred to be tough, built to last, with second to NONE dispositions and backed by 50+ years of strict culling with Performance Data, not “Fluff,” give us a call!

President of the Bluestem Charolais Association, a committee member of the American-International Charolais Association, a board member of the Kansas Livestock Association, a life member of the American Quarter Horse Association, and a member of the Kansas Cattlemans Association. He was a Governor of the American Royal Livestock Show in Kansas City, where he participated throughout his life. He served on the board of directors of the First National Bank of Washington for 30 years. He was a member of the USD 223 Board of Education, the Washington County Fair Board, and the Hanover Cemetery Board. He was President of the church council at Zion Lutheran Church, and a commander of the Hanover American Legion. Lester had a lifelong love of good horseflesh, and great pride in his herd of foundation Skipper W Quarter Horses. In his later years, he enjoyed the thrills of the Laue Ranch Thoroughbred racing stable. In 2005, he celebrated in two winners circles in Chicago, when three year old colt Gun Salute won the Secretariat Stakes (G.1) at Arlington Park and the Hawthorne Derby (G.3) at Hawthorne Racecourse. Lester was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother Avis Laue, sister Dorothy Gentry, and brothers William, Leroy, and Quentin Laue. He is survived by his wife and ranch partner LeAnna, his son Brant, who is Chief Counsel to the Governor of Kansas in Topeka, his daughter Lisa McArdle, who is a nurse in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and his sister Marilyn Doupnik of Columbus, Ohio. Burial private. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Royal Association in Kansas City.
Obituary
George R Morse George Robert Morse, 91, passed away Dec. 3, 2018 surrounded by his family. Services were December 9, 2018 at Hallbrook Country Club in Leawood, Kansas. George is survived by wife, Patricia Morse; brothers, Warren Morse and Charles Morse (deceased) (Vernita Morse - deceased); and children: Frank Morse, Sally (Morse) Sutera (Charles Sutera), Mitch Morse (Kim Morse) and Michael Morse (deceased). First wife, Dixie DeWeese (deceased) and in-laws Harold & Trudy DeWeese (deceased), George had nine grandchildren, three greatgrandchildren and many nieces and nephews. George was born in Bevier, MO to parents Frank and Ruby Morse. He was the middle child which might explain why he ended up always being the center of attention. If there was a microphone, you could guarantee he would take it for a rendition of “It’s Hard to Be Humble.” In 1954, he married his first love, Dixie. In his early years, he was one of top auctioneers in the country. His career took him to amazing places and introduced him to many beloved friends. He loved MU, singing, playing golf, horses and trail rides with the Holy Ghost Riders in Santa Fe, New Mexico. In 1994, George got re-married to Patty Morse, who he adored and spent 25 wonderful years with. To know him was to love him. We didn’t overlook him for our 8 page brochure, we saved him for the inside back cover! This tremendous son of the newest outcross herd sire we have inserted into the WC breeding program is going to follow in the footsteps of his sire with low birth and huge weaning weight. He is out of a 2016 first-calf-heifer that goes back to the legendary JWK Clarice J139 and back to the dam of X-Factor on the maternal side. This awesome built, calving ease herd sire with performance possesses the look and power you want. Wait for that warm and fuzzy feeling of WC Southern Comfort to drift into your life during calving season!
