VIEWPOINT
CHAROLAIS
Without Advertising Marketing A Strange Thing Happens. Nothing. Promote your brand and promote your product
Each year, the first quarter is stacked with industry events that most always set the stage for the rest of the year. Denver and the National Western Stock Show kick off the year, followed by Fort Worth, San Antonio, Houston, then spring junior livestock shows, spring production sales and national and state conventions. These events provide multiple, unprecedented opportunities to market your product and promote your brand to literally every sector of beef production. The AICA Board of Directors approved a new advertising campaign at the fall meeting. The ads are a mix of print and digital advertising and are components of a more extensive marketing strategy designed to drive traffic to the AICA website, www.CharolaisUSA.com, a virtual library of all Charolais resources. Several years ago, we changed our mindset from simply placing an ad in
media and an occasional radio spot during the early morning market report was the extent of affordable advertising. Today, digital and Internet media opportunities are increasing at warp speed. Savvy beef producers can take advantage of social media through Facebook and YouTube and instantly connect with an audience. AICA launched a Facebook page prior to the Junior National events in 2013. More than 700 folks follow our Facebook page. Some may perceive “social media” as, well, social. It is. But, it’s also a medium to instantly connect with people wanting to know about you and your product. Through social media, we have immediate access to promote the Charolais message. Due to the cyclical nature of the cattle business, some years’ potential buyers are more interested than others. Check out your favorite source of industry news and you are bound to read about the bullish cattle market
“Savvy beef producers can take advantage of social media through Facebook and YouTube and instantly connect with an audience.” print to strategically thinking how to maximize every placement regardless of media. Collecting the web data and analyzing the results have been exciting and interesting, but most of all, valuable to the AICA brand building process From January 1, 2013, through September 30, 2013, www.CharolaisUSA. com averaged more than 10,800 total visits per month. More than 31% of the total were new visits. We know from our analysis, on average, visitors browse 2.12 pages per visit and see more than 23,000 pages per month. Our digital advertising, all linking to the website, was directly responsible for nearly 4,000 new visits. This time of the year, it’s a foregone conclusion most producers would rather have a root canal than deal with advertising, ad salesmen or publication representatives! Calving, feeding and breeding tend to be all-consuming this time of year. Getting the catalog information (and all things related) organized is necessary—just not a priority for most ranchers. Consequently, advertising, while necessary, is done without much expectation, other than to promote a sale. A wise marketer once said, “Doing business without advertising is like winking in the dark. You know what your are doing, but nobody else does.” Before the Internet, as far as a typical beef producer is concerned, print
forecast. It is important now, more than anytime in recent history, to promote your brand and your product. The new national AICA ads are available for AICA members to use in their own promotional efforts. The ads can be customized and resized for state or regional affiliates and designated to your choice of publications. You now have multiple digital options through AICA and the Charolais Journal. Producers can promote through banner ads on www.CharolaisUSA.com by the week or the month. Your promotional message can now reach thousands through email blasts that link to your website or the destination of your choice. The sale catalog is a great genetic reference tool. Now, your finished sale catalog can be available online with a link to the digital version on your website. Some producers are likely overwhelmed and still do not feel confident with new media opportunities. Seek out marketing professionals that can better explain the media as well as the cost effective advantages. At the end of the day, you have a product that is industry relevant, in demand, and you have a brand to promote. This year, 2014, may define the beef industry for the next generation. You may not have a better, more favorable marketing environment for many years to come.

AmericanInternational Charolais Association The AICA is the official registry for Charolais and Charbray cattle in the United States. Charolais cattle were first brought to the U.S. in 1936. In 1957, the American Charolais Breeders Association and the International Charolais Breeders Association merged forming the present AICA. Membership in the AICA is obtainable when the applicant has ownership in at least one animal, and has paid the initial membership fee of $125. AICA annual dues are $100.
2014 dues are now due— $100 active member, $25 junior. Online passwords will not work until 2014 dues are paid. Female Inventories in the Mail
All active and junior members should have received their 2014 Female Inventory in the mail. As in years past, there are 3 different performance programs to enroll females in. The WHR program is $14 per female and includes a free registration and transfer on the calf born in 2014. EPDs are available on unregistered calves. In the PPR program, females are enrolled at no charge, fees are paid on the calves as they are registered and transferred depending on age. EPDs are not available on unregistered calves. For these programs, enrollment forms must be submitted by April 1st to avoid additional fees. The third program, Registration Only, is for members that want only a registration paper. Performance data will not be entered and EPDs will print on your papers only if they are available. Enroll Females Online
Enrollment is available online. Click into “my inventory” to get started. Members using the online program do not need to return the paper enrollment forms. Spring Sire Summary Available
A brief highlight of the 2014 Spring Sire Summary is available in this issue beginning on page 26. View the complete sire summary online at www.charolaisusa.com. 18

Time to Enroll your Females Two Programs Available
Now is the time to enroll your females for 2014.
Many breeders are using the on-line enrollment system for a quick and easy enrolling process. Paper forms were mailed in January to those members not using the on-line system. The two enrollment programs and accompanying fees have not changed from past years. Performance Plus (PPR) allows you to enroll your females at no-charge. Traditional fees are charged when the calves are registered depending on the age of the calf. EPD’s on unregistered animals are NOT included with this program. Whole Herd Rewards (WHR) allows you to enroll females for $14 each cow until April 1st. This program gives you the registration and one transfer of the calf at no charge. You WILL receive EPDs on unregistered calves. Steps for using the on-line enrollment system. 1. Log in with your breeder number and password. 2. Click into “my inventory” under the “my herd” button. 3. Click the “enroll” button at the far right-hand side of each cow line for the females still active in your herd. Steps for disposing of females no longer in your herd. 1. Click into “my registered females” under the “herd” tab. 2. Find a female you want to dispose of on the list and click the “view” button at the far right-hand side of the female’s line. 3. The “disposal” button is at the bottom of the “view” screen. After you dispose of an animal, it will no longer appear on your inventory list. Don’t dispose of animals that will calve this year, wait until you have registered her calf before you dispose of her. WHR Enrollment fees: Until April 1st - $14 per female April 1st through May 1st - $17 per female May 1st through June 1st - $20 After June 1st - $32 per female.

Directors By Area
Hello Everybody, I am Kate Shaffer your Area 6 Junior Director, Q: and this is my first year on the board. I am from Carthage, Missouri, and I am 19 years old. I have been showing Charolais cattle since I was 10 years old. I am currently attending Redlands Community College and majoring in Ag Economics. I plan to go into Agricultural Law. My major will transfer to a university and I will study Ag Business and Pre-Law.
Q: You are a part of the Redlands Community College
Livestock Judging Team, when did you start livestock judging? What do you enjoy about it the most?
A: I started judging at the contest at our county fair. I would do that each year, and a couple of years I was able to compete at state in 4-H livestock judging. The summer going into my freshman year I attended the Coffeyville Community College judging camp. That was the first time I learned how to formulate and give reasons. I did livestock judging my junior year in high school and we qualified to judge in Kansas City at the American Royal. My senior year I decided to attend Redlands Community College for livestock judging and I have really enjoyed being a part of the judging team. What I enjoy most are the people on my team, the people that we get to meet, and I particularly enjoy viewing cattle at operations, where we go and practice. I would encourage anybody to try judging as you learn things that will benefit you for the rest of your life; such as public speaking.
When you meet someone who doesn’t know what a Charolais is, what do you tell them?
A: I meet quite a few people not involved in the cattle or
livestock industry that don’t know what a Charolais is; and I typically tell them they are just simply white cattle. I do meet even more people that think they know what Charolais are, and they really don’t. Many people still think that Charolais are large framed, harder doing, big shouldered cattle with calving problems, and they’re not! I tell them how much our breed has changed, and doing so while retaining our breed identity. I tell them we are a very functional breed. Charolais still have growth and muscle, and that is our primary advantage; but, I also tell them we have fixed our calving problems, have numerous calving ease option sires and bloodlines and have some really maternal cows and good, practical bulls. This is the reason why Charolais are becoming more popular among commercial cattlemen and seedstock producers. I think there are a lot of good breeders in our breed that help continually improve our breed. Our breeders are a huge reason for the success that the Charolais have had.
Q:
What do you look forward to each year at Junior Nationals?
Q: How has the Charolais breed made an impact on
A: There are a few things I always look forward to at Junior Nationals. I enjoy seeing my friends from across the country. I always enjoy the cook-off contest, who doesn’t?! And I always look forward to the fitting contest.
A:
Q: When we say the Charolais breed is the Family breed, what does it mean to you?
your life?
Being involved in the Charolais breed was one of the best things that I have done. My first involvement in the breed was the Charolais Junior National in Hutchinson, Kan. We bought our first Charolais heifer from Larry Aschermann, who encouraged us to go to Junior Nationals. The breed has an excellent junior association and after attending my first junior national my family was hooked. Being involved in the breed has allowed me to build a herd of cattle and meet friends from across the country. Being involved in the junior association has allowed me to receive scholarships and be a part of different leadership activities.
A: The Family Breed certainly describes Charolais. That was pretty evident to me after attending my first Charolais Junior Nationals. I have made many close-friends through our association, and I think the camaraderie is definitely what makes our breed such a close knit family. People in this breed will go out of their way to help each other out, and that makes our breed truly special.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION LONGRANGE® (eprinomectin) should be given only by subcutaneous injection in front of the shoulder at the recommended dosage level of 1 mg eprinomectin per kg body weight (1 mL per 110 lb body weight). WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS Withdrawal Periods and Residue Warnings Animals intended for human consumption must not be slaughtered within 48 days of the last treatment. This drug product is not approved for use in female dairy cattle 20 months of age or older, including dry dairy cows. Use in these cattle may cause drug residues in milk and/or in calves born to these cows. A withdrawal period has not been established for pre-ruminating calves. Do not use in calves to be processed for veal. Animal Safety Warnings and Precautions The product is likely to cause tissue damage at the site of injection, including possible granulomas and necrosis. These reactions have disappeared without treatment. Local tissue reaction may result in trim loss of edible tissue at slaughter. Observe cattle for injection site reactions. If injection site reactions are suspected, consult your veterinarian. This product is not for intravenous or intramuscular use. Protect product from light. LONGRANGE® (eprinomectin) has been developed specifically for use in cattle only. This product should not be used in other animal species. When to Treat Cattle with Grubs LONGRANGE effectively controls all stages of cattle grubs. However, proper timing of treatment is important. For the most effective results, cattle should be treated as soon as possible after the end of the heel fly (warble fly) season. Environmental Hazards Not for use in cattle managed in feedlots or under intensive rotational grazing because the environmental impact has not been evaluated for these scenarios. Other Warnings: Underdosing and/or subtherapeutic concentrations of extended-release anthelmintic products may encourage the development of parasite resistance. It is recommended that parasite resistance be monitored following the use of any anthelmintic with the use of a fecal egg count reduction test program. TARGET ANIMAL SAFETY Clinical studies have demonstrated the wide margin of safety of LONGRANGE® (eprinomectin). Overdosing at 3 to 5 times the recommended dose resulted in a statistically significant reduction in average weight gain when compared to the group tested at label dose. Treatment-related lesions observed in most cattle administered the product included swelling, hyperemia, or necrosis in the subcutaneous tissue of the skin. The administration of LONGRANGE at 3 times the recommended therapeutic dose had no adverse reproductive effects on beef cows at all stages of breeding or pregnancy or on their calves. Not for use in bulls, as reproductive safety testing has not been conducted in males intended for breeding or actively breeding. Not for use in calves less than 3 months of age because safety testing has not been conducted in calves less than 3 months of age. STORAGE Store at 77° F (25° C) with excursions between 59° and 86° F (15° and 30° C). Protect from light. Made in Canada. F E B R U A R Y 2014
The American-International Charolais Association has recently released the Spring 2014 National Charolais Cattle Evaluation. Included in this release are the Spring 2014 AICA Trait Leaders. Listed in the next seven pages is an abbreviated listing of Trait Leaders and the EPD Percentile Breakdown for Active Sires, Active Dams and NonParents. Progeny Proven sires identified from the evaluation as Trait Leaders are those that excel in a specific trait. The determination of a Trait Leader is based on meeting superior standards in both EPDs and accuracy (greater than 0.55) values for a trait. The sires listed, include the top sires for CE, BW, WW, YW, Maternal Milk, and MCE and the top sires for HCW, FAT, REA and MARB. To become eligible, progeny proven sires must have met an accuracy standard of .55 for weaning weight EPD and have at least five (5) calves sired by him with performance information reported within the last two years. This latest analysis represents the most accurate and comprehensive evaluation of the American Charolais cattle population ever published. An EPD is the best estimate of an animal’s genetic worth given the information available for the evaluation of traits. More than any other selection tool, research herds and field records have validated the merit of an EPD as a selection tool to make directional change in beef herds for the traits evaluated. Research has further shown that even for non-parent animals, an EPD can be as much as nine times more accurate than a with-in herd ratio or weight. There are many traits that impact the profitability of the beef enterprise—not all of those traits are evaluated in the American Charolais Cattle Evaluation. Furthermore, proper management practices must be matched to your genetics to realize the best opportunity for profitability. Information published here in the Charolais Journal is a condensed version of a much broader base of information on the National Charolais Cattle Evaluation that is easily accessible on the AICA Web site at www.charolaisusa.com.
