Economic Importance

he performance movement in the beef industry didn’t just start with expected progeny differences (EPDs). By recently implementing single-step methodology, AICA is using the most proven and advanced technology available to registered seedstock producers. However, to understand where we are today, looking back nearly a century provides an interesting framework. In A Historic Angus Journey, author Keith Evans states, “Beef performance advocates were inspired by the progress that had been made by the dairy industry. Bovine performance records were generally accepted as state of the art by dairy breeders. The first Holstein records on yearly milk production were reported in 1870… Research into

national cattle evaluation is being completed. Pedigree-estimated predictions are denoted with a “PE” and Interim EPDs based on only phenotypic records (no genomics) are denoted with an “I”, and they will still appear on the EPD Animal Search. Moving forward, it is important for breeders to remember that single-step is not a replacement for performance records nor is it a “silver bullet”. In fact, single-step relies on more actual phenotypic data. Phenotypic records, such as birth, weaning, yearling weights and ultrasound scan measures, along with genomic tests and complete pedigrees are key pieces of a complex puzzle to provide a producer more predictable genetic selection tools.

Moving forward, it is important for breeders to remember that single-step is not a replacement for performance records nor is it a “silver bullet”. scientific beef cattle breeding was initiated in 1926 at the Fort Keogh Livestock and Range Research Laboratory in Miles City, Montana, funded primarily by the federal government. From this early work came the first heritability estimates.” By the late 1940s to mid 1950s, most land grant universities had established beef cattle improvement programs. Leading animal scientists began career-long research that eventually led to the very first genetic evaluation tools. To insinuate that all beef producers were in agreement would be a complete falsehood! In fact, the evolution of the performance movement and introduction to genetic evaluation tools, historically, may be one of the greatest points of dissention among all breed associations and members. In most cases, the challenging discussion over decades has been positive overall and has led to the here and now and the most robust, dynamic methodology in our history. The December release of the 2018 National Cattle Evaluation is AICA’s first implementation of single-step genomic methodology. Take the time to read Charolais Genetic Evaluation Update: Improving the Use of Genomic Data in AICA EPDs, by Dr. Sally Northcutt, Method Genetics LLC, and AICA genetic consultant. Single-step incorporates performance, pedigree and genotypic data into a more accurate EPD. Northcutt details the switch to singlestep and explains several of the most noticeable differences. A noticeable change will be in the interim EPD routine. Interim EPDs for a DNA-tested animal will not be generated for new animals or modified on existing animals when genomic results are first returned to the Association. The genomic results will be incorporated into an individual animal’s EPDs as the next scheduled

Moving to single-step enables Charolais breeders to select a more economical genomic testing option. The GGP BOV50, available through Neogen/GeneSeek, provides the same robust 50K genomic data, plus parent verification at a lower price point. Even though single-step methodology is the most modern and robust genetic evaluation tool we have today, recommending the change was made after lengthy and careful deliberation. The AICA breed improvement committee has spent the last year researching the details and discussing the possible switch with our genetic consultants, Sally Northcutt and Bill Bowman. Countless “what if ” scenarios were calculated, tests were conducted and the final analysis done with complete confidence in the change to single-step. One more reference from A Historic Angus Journey. A.D. “Dad” Weber, dean of the College of Agriculture at Kansas State University, most surely lobbed a grenade in 1955 while addressing the National Angus Conference in Stillwater, Oklahoma. “There is an urgent need for new procedures…for producing bulls that will consistently sire more profitable calves of uniformly high quality and greater efficiency…It seems to me that you have not met your challenge fully and squarely…This work warrants your interest and support if for no other reason than…it appeals to the commercial cattleman, and I predict all become increasingly useful to him in the years ahead.” No doubt, “Dad” Weber would be proud today. Surely, he would recognize the extraordinary progress that’s been made within Charolais and the beef industry’s efforts to develop and prove accurate tools to predict the traits of economic importance.

Spring 2018 Genetic Evaluation Released

AmericanInternational Charolais Association The AICA is the official registry for Charolais and Charbray cattle in the United States. Charolais cattle were first brought to the U.S. in 1936. In 1957, the American Charolais Breeders Association and the International Charolais Breeders Association merged forming the present AICA. Membership in the AICA is obtainable when the applicant has ownership in at least one animal, and has paid the initial membership fee of $125. AICA annual dues are $100.

AICA has implemented the single-step methodology in the 2018 Spring AICA Sire Summary release. The single-step methodology for genetic evaluations is a modern, proven technology used not only in the beef industry, but widely accepted in other species such as dairy, swine and poultry. This is an exciting step in ensuring that Charolais breeders and their commercial customers have improved genetic selection tools that will reliably characterize Charolais genetics moving forward. On pages 26 and 27 of this issue, more information is available about single-step methodology. Enroll Your Females

January, February and March are enrollment months for Charolais females. Online enrollment is open for the 2018 calving year. Members who have not begun the enrollment process online will receive the paper forms in February. The WHR program continues to be $14 per active female until April 1st and includes a free registration and transfer for the 2018 born calf. The PPR program is available at no-charge; however, you will pay registration and transfer fees on each calf. Dues Reminder

Annual dues are now due. Active member – $100; junior member – $25. Junior member Charolais Journal subscriptions are an additional $25. Reminders were mailed in December. Be sure to update all contact information including e-mails and websites. If dues are not renewed by January 1, online passwords will not work. Year letter for 2018 is F.

Record your 2018 born calves using AICA’s online system. Add the data as the calves are born; continue to update the records as you add weaning and yearling data. Register the calves at any time by adding their name. 18 

AI Sires used “out of herd” and all Donor Dams must be DNA tested before calves can be registered. AICA recommends collecting DNA samples during the donor’s initial flush. Check the animal’s record to make sure the DNA work has been done before submitting registration papers. DNA kits are specific to the animal being tested. Contact Marilou Wegner to request a kit. AICA rules require signatures on bulls and dams you do not own. Signatures can be submitted online, fax, mail or e-mail. Sales of Bred Females

Females sold bred must have all breeding information included to complete the transfer. Service date and appropriate sire signatures are necessary. Dispose of Animals

The American Charolais Foundation, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit subsidiary of the American-International Charolais Association, strives to support scientific research, development and education activities of the Charolais breed.

Meeting the Challenges of the Future With a vision of continued progress for the Charolais breed, the American Charolais Foundation was formed October 20, 2015. Recognized as a tax exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code in Spring of 2017, members of the American-International Charolais Association and industry interests may now make charitable contributions to the Foundation that will qualify for income, gift, and estate tax charitable deductions.

General Fund Scientific Research, Development and Education — The base on which this Foundation has been built. Charitable donations will benefit Charolais breeders, new and old. The ACF provides an opportunity for additional research, breed development and educational programs and resources.

ince 2015, AICA has provided genomically enhanced expected progeny differences (GE-EPD) for Charolais cattle. Using a multi-step approach, based on calibration research from Iowa State University, genomic test results have been combined with pedigree information and performance data, resulting in greater accuracy, especially for young animals. Now AICA will soon transition to a Single Step genomic evaluation. The move is the result of years of research and development to equip Charolais breeders with the most sophisticated, accurate and reliable genetic selection tools available.

What is Single Step?

Genomics Updated in Real Time

It is well documented that genomic predictions need to be recalculated regularly as additional data and genotypes are added to the database. Single Step does just that, by updating the genomic information each time the evaluation is run. With Single Step all sources of information – pedigree, performance, progeny data and genomic results – are updated in real time. This is a positive for breeders as the GE-EPDs are not based on outdated information, and when young sires generate their first progeny data, that information is immediately used in the genomic evaluation.

The key difference between Single Step genomic evaluation and multi-step evaluation is how genetic relationships between animals are determined. With the previous multi-step approach, the relationships between animals are determined by pedigree alone. Improving the Use of Genomic Data in AICA EPDs Sally Northcutt, Method Genetics LLC, AICA Genetic Consultant

he Spring 2018 National Cattle Evaluation released in late December incorporated the use of single-step genomic evaluation methodology provided by the AICA genetic evaluation service provider, Angus Genetics Inc (AGI). This was the initial release of EPDs that were generated using proven technology allowing the most accurate and complete combination of the pedigree, performance and genotype SNP data generated by breeders and housed by the AICA.

Favorable Comparisons between Single-Step and Previous Evaluation

A comparison of the released Spring 2018 single-step results to the Fall 2017 North American Charolais Genetic Evaluation yielded impressive results. While some breedsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; transitions to the single-step methodology have created re-ranking of animal EPDs in certain traits, the Charolais animal EPD rankings between the two evaluation methodologies were very similar. This result was typical to previously published evaluation comparisons when new animals and performance records were added to past updates. The conservative weighting of the previously used molecular breeding values in the correlated trait model helped to moderate the EPD changes as the improved, single-step methodology was implemented. In general, the rank correlations for the growth trait, scrotal, maternal milk, and calving ease EPDs were .99 between the Fall 2017 and the Spring 2018 evaluations. An unchanged rank of animals would have a correlation of 1.00. The correlations for the carcass trait suite were in the .98 to .99 range. Also, keep in mind that genomic results were previously fit as a correlated trait and the molecular breeding values were only incorporated into the CED, BW, WW, YW, Milk, REA, Marbling, and SC EPDs. The singlestep methodology now also includes genotypes for the CEM, CW and Fat EPDs. Again, the molecular breeding values previously used as a correlated trait were removed from the single-step approach, in which the genotypes were fit directly into the national cattle evaluation. With single-step, no calibration or updates of training populations are necessary. Like any evaluation update involving a methodology change, some of the actual EPDs may shift in magnitude within the population, and there will be some individual animals with EPD changes. It is always important to consider the EPD percentile ranks on an animal from one evaluation to the next. The percentile rank tables are updated with each AICA national cattle evaluation release, and consideration of these tables is especially important as the new single-step methodology is implemented. Of course, like any evaluation update, the inclusion of new data from progeny or ancestors can also cause individual animal EPDs to change.

Interim EPD Procedural Changes

With the shift to the single-step genetic evaluation, there will no longer be interim EPDs calculated using the genomic data in the time in-between the three, national cattle evaluation runs per year. Newly tested animals will have the genomic results incorporated into their EPDs only when processed through one of these national cattle evaluation runs. That said, pedigree estimates, as well as

interims based on phenotypic records (e.g., weights, scans) in proper contemporary groups submitted by AICA members, will continue to generate interim EPDs prior an upcoming national cattle evaluation. Moving forward, breeders will need to plan ahead for their potential DNA testing to ensure that the genotyping results are completed at the lab and received by the AICA office prior to the national cattle evaluation data cutoff in order to be included as part of the evaluation results. Again, animals with performance data submitted in proper contemporary groups and passing edits will continue to receive interim EPDs as they have in the past.

New Technology at a Lower Price

Charolais breeders will be able to access a new genomic test option at a lower price that allows wider use of genomic testing across the herd. Through the cooperation of the AICA genomic service provider, Neogen/GeneSeek, the GGP BOV50K option will be available for purchase, with the results incorporated into the genetic evaluation. The cost on the new test to be advertised by the AICA office includes parent verification.

Modernizing the AICA Genetic Evaluation System

Single-step genetic evaluation is an exciting milestone in ensuring that Charolais breeders and their commercial customers have improved genetic selection tools that will reliably characterize Charolais genetics moving forward.

The single-step methodology for genetic evaluations is a modern, proven technology used not only in the beef industry, but widely accepted in other species such as dairy, swine and poultry. In addition, at Method Genetics, we have worked with single-step genetic evaluations in commercial cattle populations since 2014. We have found this methodology to provide accurate, robust use of both the DNA results, pedigree, and existing performance data to create dependable genetic selection tools. The improvements in the AICA genetic evaluation system by moving to single-step methodology will allow breeders to aggressively select for traits of economic relevance with more confidence. This is an exciting step in ensuring that Charolais breeders and their commercial customers have improved genetic selection tools that will reliably characterize Charolais genetics moving forward.

ello everyone! I’m one of your at-large directors as well as your Vice President for this year. I grew up in a small town called Koshkonong in Missouri. I was born and raised on a registered Charolais farm. I attended my first Junior National at Tupelo, Mississippi when I was six years old. From there I fell in love with the white breed and the people in it. I have not missed a Junior National since and I have been able to travel to both the east and west coast. From this I have been able to achieve a goal I always dreamed about as a younger junior member, being a National Board Member. I am currently a senior at Missouri State University, where I am working on my Agriculture Education degree and I have also begun my Accelerated Masters in Natural and Applied Sciences with an emphasis in agriculture. I hope that with this degree I will able to continue sharing my knowledge and passion for the agriculture industry, specifically the cattle industry. What this industry has done for me is unbelievable. With it being the first month of the year, I want to wish each and every one of you a Happy New Year! With the new year, brings new memories, new friends, and new goals.

at pictures now, you can tell we’ve changed and improved so much. Becoming a part of the Junior Board has offered me so many opportunities, to help the Charolais breed continue to grow and develop. Since I have been involved in the Junior Board I have seen us make changes as a team, as simple as making small changes and improvements in each of the contest each year as well as bigger things like requiring steers to be recorded at least 50% Charolais beginning at this year’s Junior National. This just shows that our breed is changing and improving and is taking the appropriate steps to continue this development. I hope that we can continue growing, and we can continue blossoming as a proud and well-known breed. The Charolais breed holds much heritage and tradition. I never want to give any of that up but I think to continue building that heritage and tradition we always have to have change. So, I hope this year that the Charolais breed sets new records in registration. I hope our junior members double for our upcoming Junior National in Iowa, and I hope that the fun times and the memories are something that get bigger and more fun each and every year. I would not change a single thing about the friends and the

Furthermore, with this being the new year if there is one thing that I hope the Charolais breed can do is to continue to move forward and change. Change is intimidating to some but I see it as a new challenge. The secret to change is to focus all of your energy and willpower not into fighting the old, but building the new. Change brings on new obstacles but change also brings on new accomplishments, goals, and achievements. Without change I know the Charolais breed would not be where it is at today. memories I have made with the Charolais breed. From meeting friends at my very first Junior National in Mississippi and still being friends today, to winning at Junior Nationals and then having Reserve the next. These are things I will never forget, and I would not be able to have these memories without the Charolais breed. I’ve been involved in the breed and association for going on fifteen years and each year I get to create new memories and meet new people. I hope each year that each junior is able to feel the same way I do. When writing your New Year’s Resolution, before you sign and hang it up for the year, I suggest you add one more thing on it. Add change, because if there is one thing that I can share with each and every one of you it is that old ways won’t open new doors. AICA MEMBERSHIP

Barb McHargue Career Achievement Award

Stan Romberg, Ocala, Fla.(L) and Gordon and Anne Patton Schubert, Taylorsville, Ky. (R) presented the 2017 award to David Hobbs, AICA Director of Activities and Manager of the Charolais Journal, at the North American International Livestock Exposition, Louisville, Ky. Hobbs celebrated 35 years with AICA on October 1, 2017. This annual award is presented by Friends of Barb McHargue recognizing individuals for their lifetime achievement and commitment to marketing purebred beef cattle. Obituary

Jimmy Dale Buzzard, father, grandfather, friend, world renowned dog breeder and rancher, went to be with Jesus on Nov. 21, 2017. Jim was born on Feb. 11, 1946 to James and Josie Buzzard. Jim grew up in Bethany, Mo., and it was there that his love for animals and ranching began. At an early age Jim worked on the family farm, as well as other farms in the area. After high school, Jim married and had two daughters, Theresa and Michelle. Jim moved his family to Vinita, to manage the Frisbin Charolais Ranch in the mid 1970s. It was about this time that Jim began raising Australian Cattle Dogs and started his own herd of Charolais cattle.

His love of animals led him to a life committed to pursuing excellence in breeding and raising Australian Cattle dogs and Charolais cattle. Jim traveled all over the United States, showing cattle, which he received many awards and was also the Oklahoma Charolais Association president at one time, however, it was his love for Australian Cattle Dogs that would capture most of his time and attention. Jim received great accolades as a breeder with the American Kennel Club and was recognized as AKC Herding Group Breeder of the Year in 2014. Jim and his daughter, Theresa, have sold Buzzards Australian Cattle Dogs all over the world. His last few years he spent a lot of time working on embryo transplants in the pursuit of the perfect Charolais cow. The only thing that Jim loved more than his cattle and dogs were his daughters, Theresa Buzzard Couch and Michelle Buzzard Markham, his daughters brought him great joy. He spent most of his free time talking about them and his five grandsons; Cody, Connor, Colston, Austin, and Dayton. Jim enjoyed life and loved telling a great story. His charisma, love of life, and kindness will forever be missed. Jim is survived by his daughter, Theresa Buzzard Couch and her husband, Rodney and grandsons Cody Couch and wife Kimberly, Connor Couch and Colston Couch. Also, daughter Michelle Buzzard Markham and her husband Todd and grandsons Austin and Dayton Markham. Jim has countless business partners and friends that enriched his life. His parents, James and Josie, and brothers, Larry and Wayne Buzzard, and Robert Swartz preceded him in death. A celebration of his life was held on Nov. 24. 2017 at Cowboy Junction Church. In leiu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to: Vinita FFA, 801 N. Adair, Vinita, Ok 74301. Jim was an FFA alumni, it would bring him great joy to help Vinita FFA.

gain the fastest although the difference between the top and bottom is smaller. You can still do a feed test, but on a foragebased ration with a modest amount of grain, and still identify the top-performing bulls. Thus there is no excuse to push them with a feedlot ration, and risk permanent damage. Feeding them more than their normal requirement for growth is detrimental, and a waste of feed resources, and that’s the first thing producers need to know,” says Kastelic. NUTRITION PRE-WEANING - “The second thing breeders need to understand is the importance of the pre-weaning phase of the young bull’s life. There was some work done in the 1950’s in dairy bulls and then almost nothing on this until we started our studies in beef bulls nearly 20 years ago. For most beef bulls, that’s when they are still on their mothers. Breeders have just assumed that mama is going to look after him and feed him adequately,” Kastelic says. “Some work in the 1970’s at Colorado State University, looking at scrotal circumference in yearling bulls, came up with an adjustment formula. If the bull had a heifer for a mother you added about 1.5 centimeters to the yearling scrotal circumference (since heifers’ calves tend to be smaller as yearlings and catch up later in growth) and for a mature cow there was no adjustment, and if he had a really old dam you also added a small amount of correction—for maternal nutrition,” he says. “The work in dairy bulls showed clearly that the bulls that were really well fed early in life reached puberty quicker, had larger testes and produced more sperm. This was also our finding with beef bulls; if we fed them very well prior to about 25 weeks of age (roughly 6 months) we could hasten puberty a little, but more importantly we could increase testis size and increase the number of sperm produced.” To prove this idea a feeding trial was set up, with several groups of young bulls. One group received 100% of protein and energy requirements as a baseline. Another group of young bulls received just 70% of those requirements and a third group about 130% of requirements. The 3 groups for comparison were thus getting 70, 100 and 130% of the necessary energy and protein, but all bulls had adequate minerals and vitamins. “We fed that ration from about 6 weeks of age to about 25 weeks of age. We found that the bulls on the 130% ration—

compared to the bulls that were on 70%--reached puberty about a month earlier and had testes that were about 20 to 30% bigger and produced 20 to 30% more sperm than the bulls on the 70% ration. The number of sperm produced per ounce of testes is within a fairly narrow range. In general, when the testes are bigger, those bulls produce more sperm,” he explains. “We found no difference in semen quality, so there was no indication that feeding the bulls extra at an early age in any way harmed sperm quality. If we feed bulls really well prior to 25 weeks of age they might reach puberty a month or so earlier than they would otherwise, with testes 20 to 30% bigger, with 20 to 30% more epididymal sperm reserve. Quality seems to be fine, and quantity increases,” he says. Looking at what might be changing due to the extra feed, the researchers found that it involved the hormone called LH (luteinizing hormone). “This hormone is released from the pituitary, a small gland at the base of the brain, and goes to the testes and causes release of testosterone. What happens in a bull’s life, starting at about 6 to 8 weeks of age, is an increase in this hormone, and it stays relatively high until about 20 to 25 weeks and then it decreases. The nature of that increase, how high it gets, and how often it is released has a big impact on what happens later in the bull’s life,” says Kastelic. “We found that when we fed the bulls really well (the group receiving 130% of their requirements, versus the group receiving 70%) we could substantially increase the amount of LH. There were profound differences in those bulls in that very early phase of growth. At that age, testosterone levels are really quite low, but what happens at that time sets the bull up for the rest of his life. So by feeding really well during those weeks, we bumped that LH up, and saw all the other changes thereafter.” What was interesting was that if the bulls were fed really well for the first 25 weeks and then were backed off on the feed, this changed. “We put the profile of testicular development— measured either as scrotal circumference or testicular volume—on a completely different trajectory. By feeding young bulls very well until about 25 weeks of age and then backing off, their testes continued to grow rapidly, even though they were on a normal diet of 100% of requirements (no extra). The other interesting thing was that if we held them back in growth through the first 25 weeks (with only 70% of their requirements for energy and protein) and

then supplemented them, giving them 130% of their nutrients, we had different results. This would be like having a heifer for a mother (not as much milk) and then getting a lot of protein and energy after weaning,” he explains. “We found that even with the additional supplement we could not rescue those bulls. The future course of testes development was already set; they were on a trajectory to be underachievers. That bull cannot reach his genetic potential for testes development. Thus the key to optimizing a bull’s future fertility is to provide extra nutrition early in life (from about 6 weeks of age to about 25 weeks) and then from that point on we can just feed a nice balanced diet for growth,” he says. On a practical basis, however, bull producers would need to do some sort of creep feeding, especially for young bulls out of first-calf heifers. “This would help all bulls that have the potential to become breeding bulls, but especially any young bull that might not have a high-milking dam.” This is the opposite of what we’ve learned about heifer development; the young heifer with a high-milking dam or eating creep feed may put too much fat in her young udder and never milk as well in adulthood as a heifer that was not allowed to get so bloomy fat as a calf. All of the work with beef bulls was done with early weaning, so the exact amount of protein and energy in their diets could be calculated for the various groups in the studies. “The bulls with heifer dams were weaned at about 6 weeks of age, for instance, and we were a bit worried about taking them off their mothers that early and putting them on dry feed. But we didn’t lose any calves during that early weaning and transition phase, and this was over a

4-year period with more than 150 calves,” he says. The early-weaned calves were put on a silage-based diet, adding various amounts of grain and canola or soy meal to bump up the energy and protein. “That was the easiest way to have complete control over what the various groups of bulls were eating and we could modulate it. A practical method would be to just leave the calves on their mothers and supplement with both energy and protein—not just straight energy—and boost their growth prior to about 25 weeks of age (weaning) and then back off,” he says. “You probably want them gaining close to about 3 pounds per day during that time frame, and then just back off on the supplemental feed at weaning, and then the bulls are fine. That’s the key, but you don’t want to feed your heifer calves that same way—so you’d have to separate them and their mothers into a different pasture,” says Kastelic. This would allow breeders to achieve full genetic potential for testes development in the young bulls. “There have been many studies looking at scrotal circumference and how it is highly heritable, with results also showing that by selecting for bulls with large testes we can make rapid genetic progress and also get earlier puberty in the daughters of those bulls. In addition, there is quite a bit we can do just with management. The key is to supplement young bulls prior to weaning and then just back off and grow them,” he says. “There has been a vast amount of work looking at post-weaning nutrition, but that’s the time that we should not be ruining bulls by over-feeding. We tried that for several decades and it didn’t work,” he says. The time to augment their feed is when they are still on their mothers.
