CHAROLAIS The Devilish Details
Continued action and engagement.
W
hen we want to make a point or some profound statement that might have an impact, we often repeat sports analogies or proverbs that have been quoted over and over again. While there’s nothing wrong with trying to make an impact, as with most anything, it’s never as simple as the statement. “The devil is in the details” isn’t nearly as impactful, but often the most accurate. As we move into the first quarter of 2021, we still are faced with unknowns. Yet, what we do know is for most of 2020, every sector of food animal production has been challenged beyond anything anyone could imagine. Every stakeholder in each sector knew the challenge required action, not analogies. So, what are the “details?” Although we knew it, we also proved that the massive and complicated job of keeping the supply line full of meat protein and the meat case full takes more than a village. We proved that, regardless of catastrophic challenges, the intellectual
meat yield and carcass quality (marbling). TSI is not recommended as a singular selection tool for replacement heifers since maternal traits and calving ease are not factored into the index. “Pounds pay the bills” is repeated throughout beef production and, on the surface, it’s accurate. However, one of the best risk management tools in the past 40 years is the evolution of valuebased marketing where cattle can be sold on a formula system that rewards quality pounds. Producers have multiple marketing options based on the knowledge and confidence of quality. Most all grid formulas set the upper limit for carcass weight at 1,000 lbs. The math is pretty simple. The premium for a carcass that grades USDA Prime is typically $18-$20 cwt. or $175 per head. If the same carcass also meets requirements for USDA Choice or higher, another $12-$15 cwt. or $40-$50 can be added to the premiums. If specifications for a branded program are met, the
The future of beef production is as encouraging as it has been in decades. We don’t need philosophical statements to guide us. We need the continued action and engagement from Charolais breeders, AICA members and all our industry stakeholders ultimately creating more opportunity for profitability than we’ve seen in decades.
and financial investment of academia, processors and registered and commercial producers in the last 40 years positioned the industry to continue to supply consumers with safe, nutritious and highquality beef. We proved that beef production stops at nothing. Slowed somewhat, but never stopped. We proved that breeding, calving, herd health, nutrition, marketing, youth activities and marketing doesn’t stop. The forecast for 2021 is cautiously optimistic to bullish which likely means most will return to debating more of the “devilish details.” In the September 2020 issue of the Charolais Journal, AICA genetic consultant, Dr. Sally Northcutt, discussed, in simple terms, the value of AICA’s Terminal Sire Index. TSI has been available as a selection tool for several years, yet arguably underutilized by most breeders. Northcutt offered an excellent explanation of the importance of TSI as well as how not to use the tool. TSI is a selection index that incorporates economic values and genetic predictions with the specific goals of improving gain, red
carcass earns even more premium. So, a legitimate challenge to the “pounds pay the bills” statement is, would you rather produce a 1,000 lb. carcass with the inherent ability to earn premiums, or a 1,000 lb. carcass destined to become a Big Mac®? The best news yet is Charolais producers and their customers have access to an amazing suite of accurate phenotypic and genotypic selection tools. The Charolais breed has industry recognition and respect. Charolais genetics are included in the breeding programs of many of the most successful commercial cowcalf operations in America. The future of beef production is as encouraging as it has been in decades. We don’t need philosophical statements to guide us. We need the continued action and engagement from Charolais breeders, AICA members and all our industry stakeholders ultimately creating more opportunity for profitability than we’ve seen in decades.

AmericanInternational Charolais Association The AICA is the official registry for Charolais and Charbray cattle in the United States. Charolais cattle were first brought to the U.S. in 1936. In 1957, the American Charolais Breeders Association and the International Charolais Breeders Association merged forming the present AICA. Membership in the AICA is obtainable when the applicant has ownership in at least one animal, and has paid the initial membership fee of $125. AICA annual dues are $100.

Female Enrollments
Female enrollments for 2021 are open January 1, 2021. Regardless of the program you choose, your active females should be enrolled. There are 2 enrollment programs: WHR – Each active female is enrolled at $14 until April 1. For the $14 you get the registration and transfer of the calf born in 2021. You will also get EPDs on unregistered calf with weight data in valid contemporary groups. The enrollment fee goes up after April 1. PPR – Each active female is enrolled, however there is no fee attached to the enrollment. You will pay the traditional registration and transfer fees as you register and transfer the calves, depending on the age of the calf. EPDs on unregistered calves is not part of the PPR program. ONLINE TIPS
Transfers cannot be done on-line if the paper has already been issued. The original paper must be returned to AICA. Animals registered on-line can be held in the system for transfer or print later. Many members find it helpful to hold all the newly registered animals in the system. No need to chase papers around. When using a non-Charolais parent, follow the example given on the entry screen. For a non-Charolais female type FNF-

XXXX, for a non-Charolais male type FNM-XXXX. You may also use breed codes to indicate the breed of the non-Charolais animal but be sure to use 4 digits (example: FNM-ANAN). We can add the pedigree of your other breed animal but need a copy of the pedigree 1st. The fee to add a pedigree is $20. Be sure to click the “register” box and the “save” button at the bottom of the registration screen if you want the animal registered. The registration number will pop up in the middle of the screen or you’ll get an error message telling you what boxes you have missed. 2021 Reminder
Annual dues reminders were mailed in November. Active members – $100; junior member – $25. Junior member Charolais Journal subscriptions are an additional $25. Be sure to update all contact information including e-mails and websites. If dues are not renewed for 2020, online passwords will not work. 52nd National Show & 42nd National Sale
The 52nd National Charolais Show and 42nd National Sale will be held at the Cattlemen’s Congress, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, January 9-10. Room blocks for this event are available at The Embassy Suites Will Rogers Airport, Oklahoma City, Okla. To reserve rooms call: 1-405-6826000. New ONLINE Lab Results

Click the “view” button to see details on each animal. You can also download the results in an Excel file by using the “Lab Test Results Export” under the “tools” tab. Expedited Registration Work

LITTLE RIVER CHAROLAIS By Steve Sellers
There’s a saying that goes like this: “Legacy is not leaving something for people. It’s leaving something in people.” When Marshall “Buck” Bennett was 14 years old, he wasn’t thinking about leaving a legacy for or in people. In 1949, when he started working on the land that would become the nucleolus for Little River Charolais, Buck just needed some money. But soon his work ethic and love for livestock and the land gave him a purpose that would influence generations to come. On this day, the farm truck is driven by Buck’s son, Marshall Bennett Jr., DVM, currently the only veterinarian in Adel, Georgia. Marshall and his family operate Little River Charolais, the self-sustaining cattle and grass operation his parents built from a handful of Charbray heifers in the early 1960s.
Little River Charolais is named for its proximity to the Little River, a tributary that forms the boundaries of Cook and Colquitt counties as it flows through Reed Bingham State Park and eventually dumps into the Gulf of Mexico. When you turn onto EM Rogers Road, the dirt road that runs through Little River Charolais, you’re struck by the quality of the pastures. “We are grass farmers, first and foremost,” Marshall says. “Our job is to care for this land and manage it in such a way as to give every single cow here the opportunity to succeed at her job, which is to convert this grass into a marketable protein product, whether that’s pounds across a scale or seedstock continuing the same process.” CHAROLAIS JOURNAL
Marshall is convinced that the most efficient way to do that is literally at the grassroots level. “As urban sprawl increases, it’s important we demonstrate that cattle producers can be true friends of the environment.” He lays out the details: “We start with our water. All 150 acres that we graze are in complete wetlands compliance. The cattle are all watered from deep wells and have no access to surface water ponds, so the cows aren’t emptying themselves in a pond or stream.” As we drive by a fenced, heavily vegetated pond, Marshall continues: “This is a riparian filter zone around this pond, that started as an FFA Agri-science project. The cattle are fenced out to keep the water clean J A N U A R Y 2 0 2 1 27
and we test it as it leaves the other end to be sure. What others see as overgrowth around the pond, we see as a filter. The water that leaves this spring-fed pond goes into the Little River, which runs through the State Park, and testing shows that our water contribution is cleaner now than 15 years ago.” At first glance, their pasture fencing looks a bit bizarre, but Marshall explains the purpose behind it: “Our South Georgia sandy soil drains pretty well, so if there’s a spot that doesn’t drain, it’s a different soil composition and usually turns into mud, which is a melting pot for insects and disease. We fence those areas off so we can isolate and manage the soil types. Then both the cattle and soil are healthier.” Walking through one of the more established pastures, we notice that the thick grass resembles what is known as “bunch grass” out West. “Everyone’s curious what kind of grass this is. It’s Argentinian Bahia grass,” Marshall notes. “Daddy always called it ‘poor man’s grass,’ because it’s very hardy, extremely drought-resistant, and works well in our management system. It’s also nearly 89-percent digestible, so we get more nutrients into the cow. Hay
is one of the most labor-intensive feedstuffs you can give a cow. Here, we’d rather concentrate on quality forage and let the cows do the work. So rather than mow, we heavy-graze rotationally going into the fall. Starting in mid-October we’ll overseed with rye, oats, wheat, ryegrass and two types of clover, because these forages mature at different stages. By the time we’ve rotated through all the pastures, usually by Christmas week, we’ll have a good stand of winter grazing that remains strong until April, when the Bahia grass returns. Acidic soils produce weeds, so we keep the pastures clean by routinely taking multiple soil samples and aggressively managing the pH with lime.” The Bennetts even run soil samples on their fence rows, which Marshall says typically show a pH of 2-3. They nurture the fence-row grass by liming it twice a year, with a pelleted lime-spreader, and the healthier grass chokes out the weeds. “It’s not a quick fix. It takes time and patience, but we see improved results each year a pasture is in management. It takes between four and five years to see good results. But we haven’t applied any synthetic fertilizer or herbicide in nearly 20 years, and that translates
into saving money and supports our environmental conscience. You could say we’re carbon-farming, because we raise our own natural soil supplement in the form of organic matter.” Their 1,000- to 1,200-pound cows have proven to be most efficient for Little River. Buck and Marshall agree that the simplest, most straightforward way to gauge that efficiency is by weighing the calves and the cows at weaning, then using that ratio to sort. “Our mama cows must wean half their body weight,” Marshall explains. “My dad’s been ruthless with that standard through the years, so now it’s commonplace for our cattle to wean over 60 percent of their weight. Of course, genetics play into that equation and we’re line-breeding selectively.” While they once ran 300 head of Charolais, the Bennetts have downsized to 80 brood cows, to better manage the pinch of time and labor. Agriculture has brought the Bennett family close through the years. Marshall and his wife, Mary Beth, who works in Admissions at Valdosta State University, have always encouraged their own three sons’ participation, and the skills they use today directly relate to

the legacy their grandfather Buck passed down. Marshall himself served as a Georgia FFA State Officer. Their oldest son, Marshall “Ben” Bennett III, served as Georgia FFA State President during his senior year in high school and works for the USDA in Tifton. Sam, their middle son, is a welder by trade, blessed with his grandfather’s ability to build anything. Ian, their youngest, served as a National FFA Officer and works for Southern Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SSARE) as a communications specialist on the UGA campus in Griffin. The traditions passed down from Buck and Jean Bennett may have evolved through the years, but they’re still the glue that holds this family together. This is a family that has paid their dues, from the land and good Charolais cattle they raise. Marshall sums it up: “Sustainability is a hot-button topic these days, but in our pursuit for success, we often forget the most important thing about sustainability is simply being able to pay the bills. Without that, you have nothing to sustain.” The legacy of Marshall “Buck” Bennett and Little River Charolais has left its imprint in all those who follow.
Marshall “Buck” Bennett Sr. was a young teen when he started working as a farmhand on the Cook County land he would one day own. He was in the first high school class in the county that graduated as 12th graders. He was anxious to work and callused his hands building fence, working on equipment, and farming. Shortly after graduation, Buck answered the call of his country and was sent off to the Korean War. After his discharge, he returned home and used the GI bill to put himself through college, earning an Ag Equipment Technician degree from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. He married Jean, and soon his world would revolve around raising a family and raising Charolais bulls. He has sold thousands of bulls, mostly into Florida, and earned respect from fellow cattlemen. In 2019 Buck lost Jean, his wife of 61 years, after her long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Once again, he began a new season in his life. Buck is content to stay on the farm that he has worked virtually all his life. One of his favorite spots to visit, when riding the pastures, is an old nondescript fence post, settled under some massive shade trees. Buck set this post and hung a gate on it in 1949. After 71 years, the old post still stands, with its rusty hinges still attached. It’s a memory post, of sorts. A sign of endurance. It’s hard to imagine that anything made today could last that long.

Spring Valley Ranch Aims at Maximizing Profits by Linda Eck
ombining good basic animal husbandry, strict pasture management and locally raised Charolais bulls, Jim Hacker is maximizing profits with stockyard replacements on his southwest Missouri ranch. Just northeast of Bolivar, Spring Valley Ranch features well-managed fescue pastures near and along the Pomme de Terre River where Hacker, along with his wife, Sheila, continue the family’s ranching legacy. In addition to the original family acreage and property purchases over the years, the Hackers utilize pasture contracts with nearby landowners to maintain the cow-calf program. The Hackers calve 450-500 cows each spring across their 2,100-acre spread and do not keep any replacement females. In order to develop and maintain the ranch’s cow herd Hacker purchases stockyard run “wet bag” cows. “We can buy any kind of cow that we think will raise a decent calf,” said Hacker of the system he has used for the past five years. “I don’t discriminate on color. Charolais always shows through. I bring them in, deworm, pour, give them a shot

owdy y’all! My name is Molly Smith, and I am currently serving as your AIJCA Vice-President. I am the daughter of Doris and Roger Smith. I am originally from Lockhart, Texas but am currently attending Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas where I am majoring in Animal Science. After my completion of my Bachelor’s degree I hope to continue my education into a Masters and then on into a Ph.D. I currently work at the University Beef Center where I am being schooled in a whole manner of new information to learn. Every time I turn around there is something new to experience and another skill to master. I have been able to call the Charolais breed my “home” for about 12 years now, and trust me, there’s no place like home! Being able to serve on the Junior Board for the AIJCA has brought me so much happiness and created lifelong friendships. What the agricultural industry has done for me as a person has been
even more excited to be hosting Junior National in Perry, Georgia! Did you know that the “Peach State” is also the country’s top producer of pecans, peanuts and Vidalia onions? Maybe some of those ingredients can be used in a dish for the cooking contest! I love attending Junior National because it is where I get to see many of my friends that I have made over the years all in one place. Being a Junior Board member means that we get to see all the hard work the exhibitors have put into their cattle all year long and how it has paid off. While taking care of the cattle will take up a lot of our time, they are not the only reason we will be there. Public speaking, photography, salesmanship and many other things go on during the week and sometimes that is just as fun as showing cattle! During the course of the week, I challenge every exhibitor to meet someone new, whether it be a junior from another state or a breeder close to home, the friendships you make will create new

unbelievable and I attribute a lot of it to being an active member of the Charolais Association. I am currently 21 years old and soon coming to the end of my junior career. Once I have aged out, I still plan to be involved with the Junior Charolais Association because I hope to continue inspire young members from my area and other areas to run for the Junior Board, take leadership positions within the association, and continue to help grow our organization. This year has tested everyone’s ability and willingness to adapt to changes but this past summer the Junior Board was extremely excited to host the Charolais Junior National in Brookings, South Dakota and we were amazed at the turnout of Charolais cattle that were exhibited during the week. Our Charolais members did not slow down and I believe we had a very successful and memorable show. During the summer of 2021, we are 32

opportunities and memories. I hope that the fun times that are had and memories made will continue to grow right along with the growth of our association. As a Junior Board member, the kids hold a very special place in my heart. We are expected to be role models for them but in return they teach me things that I had never expected to learn. I consider each new individual I meet as a friend and I hope that each junior member feels the same way. At the end of the day, our character is what prepares us for our future. Not everyone understands the amount of time we spend in the barn on a hot summer day or calving out females on a cold winter evening, but we are fortunate enough to mold the future of agriculturists. Uncharted’s beautiful dam WC Brenda 4035 was the heaviest weaning weight heifer in her contemporary group with a 119 AWW. The dam of WC Untouchable 9507 #1510 is a full sister to the great Rocketfuel and to full sister #1522 who has also produced great progeny including a National Champion son WC Everest and another son for $29,000. Don’t overlook his EPD stats not only with performance EPDs soaring, but also a Ribeye Area EPD in the top 2% of the breed.

A Rushmore son that demands your attention! With Milk and MTL EPDs in the top 1% of the breed and a Marbling EPD in the top 20%, he is a replacement female making machine. Not to mention his performance EPDs for WW and YW numbers are in the top 15% of the breed. His dam is the highly productive WC Asta 0505 P which makes him a full brother to both WC Monumental 5524 P that sold for $42,500 to Weber Charolais in South Dakota and WC Inferno 6561 P that sold for $47,500 to 5L Ranch in Montana. Yes, the maternal value just keeps getting better.

“He is a beast” was Chris Peuster’s first comment about this herd sire prospect. The next description was, “He may well be the best WC Milestone 5223 son ever produced here at Wright Charolais.” Stout, huge-bodied, a complete package from front to rear, top to bottom. The $125,000 one-half interest WC Milestone 5223 is a good way to start the pedigree tabulation. Then go to the bottom side of his pedigree to find the $54,000 WC Dream Girl 6243 P, one of the most powerful daughters of Rushmore ever produced. Dream Girl’s dam WC Miss Value 2213, now in the WC donor barn, is out of the over-the-top production donor SCC Miss 3027 ET who produced 91 progeny at Dream Girl 6243 P – Dam of WC Magnum 9805 P Wright Charolais. Lots of maternal power genetics come into play with this great bull. The sire Resource, first popped on the scene in 2015 as the lead bull in the Denver Grand Champion Pen-of-Three! Shortly after a one-half interest in him sold for $44,000. His progeny has been topping shows and sales since 2017. The dam of this bull had a one-half interest in her sale for $25,000 as a bred heifer in 2014 going to Patrick Maher in South Dakota, our partner in this bull. In 2017 a one-half interest in a maternal sister to this herd sire prospect sold for $17,000 to 007 Charolais in Oklahoma. This bull is also linebred to WC Clarice 2533 P ET – Dam of #9830 Brenda’s Ease 3055 - the dam of LT Rushmore 8060 and she is also the dam of LT Brenda 6120 - the dam of LT Ledger 0332!

Cattlemen Take Aim at High Profits with
C
attlemen taking aim at higher profits are quickly finding marketing assistance from the American International Charolais Association (AICA) and its progressive CharAdvantage program.
With age and source verification becoming a standard in hitting top market prices, the AICA has stepped up to help both purebred and commercial breeders with marketing opportunities and tools designed to help maximize profits. Taking age and source a step farther, CharAdvantage also encourages producers to provide genetics as well as health and management protocols when enrolling cattle. This allows operators marketing feeder calves the opportunity to capitalize on their purchase of genetically superior seedstock by providing potential buyers with valuable information. “It is still a pound-based system,” said Colt Keffer, AICA’s Director of Industry Relations and Sales. “Until that changes there’s a demand for Charolais cattle.” However, with Charolais breeders becoming more focused on producing cattle that can create demand beyond pounds, the AICA sees value in rewarding them with options beyond the weekly livestock auction. “I don’t ever want to take business away from the sale barn,” said Keffer. “CharAdvantage is designed to provide more options for producers.” Simply put, Keffer noted these options are available to those producers willing to work for the added reward. The program utilizes AICA data including Terminal Sire Index (TSI), Marbling Indicators and Genomically Enhanced EPDs. Commercial cattlemen using seedstock enrolled in AICA programs can reap the benefits of the association’s database of indexes and EPDs to maximize their income potential. “The biggest challenge is cost and labor,” said Keffer. “There’s more record keeping and producers have to be willing to follow the program requirements.” All feeder cattle enrolled in the program must be parented by a registered Charolais bull or female. In order to assist their commercial customers, seedstock producers must insure transfer of updated registrations. Parents of all cattle enrolled must be registered in the enrolling producers name. With the use of documented Charolais cattle in crossbreeding programs seeing a surge in popularity, CharAdvantage is poised to help both purebred and commercial breeders boost their profitability margins. “You have to be able to pencil it out and see if it works for you,” Keffer added, “but the difference is real.” Research conducted by Kansas State University and Superior Livestock shows Charolais-sired steers sold through Superior Livestock Video Sales generated the highest dollar amount per hundredweight at weaning when compared to other major beef breeds. The research covered a seven-year period (2010-2016) of sales and included over three million head of feeder calves weighing about 580 pounds. This premium, when combined with added pounds at weaning due to heterosis, quickly sets the stage for added profitability. With 8,000 head enrolled since January 1, CharAdvantage is on pace to market close to 10,000 head of calves by the end of this year, doubling last year’s enrollment of nearly 5,000. Challenging as it may seem for small producers, Keffer was quick to add that for the small purebred breeder it holds a lot of value by giving them options for working with their customers to help maximize profits. “I encourage breeders to offer to split the cost with their customers. It helps create a niche when competing with big producers.”

All of the programs provided require EID tags and/or visual tags along with verification through telephone interviews or onsite audits. CharAdvantage has partnered with IMI Global, the animal agriculture division of Where Food Comes From, to complete in person audits and telephone interviews as required. In addition to the age, farm or ranch location and genetic verification, feeder calf producers are provided a certificate for the cattle enrolled that includes: • Origin of the sires and dams that produced the cattle • An average Terminal Sire Index (TSI) Score of AICA sires and dams • Performance and carcass quality traits • Genomically Enhanced EPD Indicator • Marketing Venue of Feeder Cattle • Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) Certification, if completed, of originating farm or ranch • Additional health and management protocols As part of the service, CharAdvantage also emails a list of cattle available to order buyers and other entities seeking quality weaned calves. “We are diligent about getting information out to as many people as possible,” said Keffer. Additional CharAdvantage Options Designing the program to benefit both seedstock and commercial producers, CharAdvantage offers a variety of options allowing producers to sell in niche markets by enrolling their calves in specialty programs including Non-Hormone Treated Cattle (NHTC), Verified Natural Beef (VNB) and BeefCARE. Non-Hormone Treated Cattle These cattle are eligible for buyers and brands exporting beef products to the European Union. Never in their lifetime can these calves have received a growth implant of any kind and they must be identified with a CharAdvantage EID tag before leaving the farm or ranch of origin. IMI will provide a quality manual which must be kept up to date; training is required for family members and/or employees regarding NHTC requirements and procedures, and an annual onsite audit is required. Calves can only be moved through NHTC approved locations and/or sale facilities.
Verified Natural Beef -
VNB calves are sought by buyers and brands seeking specialty markets requiring natural beef and/or exporting beef products to the European Union. These calves cannot receive growth promotants, antibiotics or animal by-products of any kind and also must be identified with the CharAdvantage EID tag before leaving their farm or ranch of origin. A quality manual is required and family members and/or employees must be trained on VNB requirements and procedures. An annual onsite audit is required and calves may only move through VNB-approved facilities.
BeefCARE -
This sustainability standard certifies that participating producers are implementing best practices in animal husbandry, environmental stewardship and productive engagement with their local community and its citizens. BeefCARE certification creates value by transmitting the invaluable role farmers and ranchers play by implementing best practices in each of these areas. An initial telephone interview will be conducted by a team member from IMI Global.
Additional information concerning CharAdvantage may be obtained on the AICA website or by contacting Keffer at 765.376.8784 or ckeffer@charolaisusa.com.

Calf scours are not inevitable. A strong prevention program is non-negotiable. Dependable scour prevention is essential for calf welfare, employee morale and business profitability. The immune system’s response to vaccination is variable and unpredictable. That’s why giving preformed antibodies instead of relying on a vaccine to stimulate antibody production is so important. by this product. (And no, I’m not.)

Docility is a plus as Sheila walks through the new bulls
of Multimin and send them to other people to graze for me. This way they’re isolated (quarantined at least 60 days) before I put a bull with them.” Isolating the cows has become an important part of the program for Hacker. “One year at the last minute I needed a few more cows and didn’t have time to clean them up. I had some health issues,” he said. The ranch is not setup for artificial insemination and uses only natural breeding with Charolais bulls turned out to cover the herd. Jim is focused on providing adequate nutrition and works diligently to keep cows at a body condition score of five or above. Noting the ranch workforce includes he and Sheila along with one hired hand, Hacker was quick to add, “The first four weeks of calving, we’re pretty busy.” Attributes of Using Charolais “You can breed any cow to a Charolais bull and get uniformity,” said Hacker. “I like knowing what they’re bred to and that they’re bred to my bull.” Hacker prefers growthy Charolais bulls that offer calving ease and a Terminal Sire Index (TSI) over 200. He also keeps a close eye on yearling weight EPDs.

CHAROLAIS JOURNAL
Having purchased bulls from as far away as Montana in the past, Hacker has found southwest Missouri bulls raised by Aschermann Charolais at Carthage to fit his program well. “Larry has taught me a whole lot about EPDs and the entire business,” said Hacker. “He’s been a real help for me and our outfit.” Recognizing the value of a breeder support system, Hacker has developed trust in the bulls produced in the Aschermann program not only for their performance, but for their docility as well. “I have a whole lot of confidence in the bulls and their disposition is good. I can’t believe how quiet our calves are. They feed so much better - they’re not stressed.” Cows that Work Calves at Spring Valley Ranch usually start hitting the ground in early February with Hacker allowing for a 63-day calving period. Cows are pregnancy checked in September and any cow not bred 60 days or more is sold. With that protocol, the pregnancy rate usually comes in at 80 percent or higher. This year it was 88 percent.

“Buying replacements like we do, it’s a whole lot easier to cull hard,” said Hacker, who also puts strong emphasis on cow condition and the quality of calf raised. “If that cow is in good shape and still raising a good calf, I don’t even look in their mouth anymore.” Records are kept simple. Cows are noted by age, description, tag number, calving date, sex and color of the calf. At two months of age, calves are castrated, implanted and ear tagged. They are also vaccinated for Blackleg and receive Nasalgen 3 and One Shot BVD. In June the entire herd is wormed through the mineral, a process that Hacker, who uses fecal samples to determine effectiveness, has been happy with. “It will worm those calves,” he noted. Contracting the Calves via Video Auction The Spring Valley Ranch calves are usually contracted in July through Joplin Regional Stockyards’ Prime Time Video
for delivery later in the year. “I video the calves while they’re still on the momma, usually selling them to weigh 775 pounds in November,” said Hacker. “When delivery day comes, they’re loaded, weighed on the truck and shipped to the buyer.” Calves are weaned in early September with steers coming in at an average weight of approximately 570 pounds. They are vaccinated for respiratory diseases, including Pasteurella, implanted, dewormed and given a Blackleg booster. Calves remain in the wean pen for two days, right across the fence from their mommas where they are divided by a single strand of poly wire. Calves are then moved to pasture where they strip graze lush fescue and are fed a commodity mix along with good brome hay. At about 700 pounds, corn in the ration is increased from 25 to 50 percent. Good pasture is important on the Polk
“You can breed any cow to a Charolais bull and get uniformity,” said Hacker. “I like knowing what they’re bred to and that they’re bred to my bull.”

County ranch, as calves remain on pasture until delivery is made. “I don’t like to lock them up,” said Hacker, who prefers grazing the calves as opposed to a feedlot setting. Demand for calves raised through the Spring Valley Ranch program has been good. “I’ve had buyers tell me they like to buy Charolais calves because they know what they’re getting,” said Hacker. “They like the growth; and I like the growth.”

AICA MEMBERSHIP Obituary
Obituary
Charles “Charlie” Byron Smith Jr. was born May 9, 1922 in Slaton, Texas and passed away on November 17, 2020 in Sugar Land, Texas. He was raised on a farm near Woodward, Oklahoma and graduated from Supply Oklahoma High School in 1939. He then went on to attend The University of Oklahoma and graduated in 1943 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He spent the next three years in the Army Signal Corps. From 1946 to 1961, he was employed by Continental Oil Company and held various positions from Seismic Observer to Exploration Manager of the Rocky Mountain Region. In 1958, he attended The Stanford University Sloan Program in Executive Management. He went on to spend several years in the geophysical contracting business with Geo Prospectors in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Georex in Houston, Texas. Along with his wife Jean, he formed Georex Data, Inc., which later became Data, Inc., a geophysical data acquisition and data sales corporation. The assets of the company were sold in 1993 and he retired to raise registered Charolais cattle in Leon County, Texas. Charlie and his wife Jean founded CJ Ranch in 1981 establishing a noted Charolais seedstock breeding program. He served two years as the President of the American-International Charolais Association and two years as President of the World Charolais Federation. They were honored as the 1989 AIJCA Junior National Honorees and endowed scholarships with the organization. Charlie and Jean were inducted into the AICA Hall of Fame in 1993. Throughout his life he took great pleasure in supporting various colleges, charities and organizations with scholarships and donations.
I was born in Mason City, Neb. on September 9, 1934 and later moved to Douglas, Wy. before my parents purchased the ranch south of Valentine, Neb. in 1942 where Bob and I live today. I attended a one room country school and entered High School as a freshman in Valentine, Neb. After graduation I attended Loretta Heights College in Denver, Colo. and did my intern work for Medical Technology at Glockner Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Charlie is survived by his wife Jean, two daughters, Karen and Gina, and son, Steve. Also surviving are two granddaughters, one grandson and four great grandchildren.
We have an annual Charolais Bull Sale and have commercial cattle on the ranch. We do a lot of Embryo Transfer work here on the ranch and in the past have shown our cattle in multiple states. This has been a highlight in our lives ranging to conventions, showing cattle, and delivering bulls. Always tried to stop off at Branson, Mo., the Saint Louis Arch or someplace on the way home. Many good friendships have been established all over the US with Charolais friends.
Funeral Services were held on Tuesday November 24, 2020. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The American Heart Association.
We lived under the Dam at Ogallala, Neb. as the four boys grew up and I taught school at Arthur, Neb. and Rosco, Neb. earning education classes through Kearney, NE and Chadron, Neb.. From there I earned my Bachelor Degree. I married Bob Grabher in March of 1974. In 1974 we moved to my parent’s ranch south of Valentine, NE where we have lived for 46 years. We have four sons, Dean (Cindy) who lives on the ranch and as Bob and I have retired we are proud to pass the ranch on to Dean. Dick (Mary) who lives in Phoenix, Az. and loves the hot weather where he trains horses. Don (Melissa) is a banker in Dessmit, S.D. and Dan (Jennifer) lives in Valentine, Neb. and works for Land O Lakes Purina. We have 18 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. The grandkids range from college students to bankers, attorneys, UNL employees, nurses, etc. Still trying to interest someone into being a doctor but several are still in college so. . . maybe! I have taught for 40 years with several breaks in between. I also managed the Visitor Center at Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge for 7 years.
We have Husker season tickets so spend a lot of our time following games and went to Green Bay, WI to watch a Packers game. We have a 36 foot Montana Mountaineer 5th wheel and have traveled in almost every state. Lots of diesel and lots of fun. A great way to see the USA. Some of our trips have been to Alaska and Canada, up and down the full East and West Coasts, twice to Washington, DC, Gettysburg, Nashville, Memphis and Vicksburg, Grand Canyon, the Tetons, Yellowstone and the Black Hills, balloon festivals in Albuquerque, the National Cemetery in Vicksburg and then to see Andersonville and everything in between. Every morning when I look out my window, I see deer, geese, turkeys, pheasants, ducks, cows etc. and I am glad to live in the great state of Nebraska and in beautiful Cherry County Nebraska. I am preceded in death by my parents, Graydon and Gladys Holm Anderson and 1 sister, Joyce Buvk. I am survived by Husband, Bob; and 4 sons, Dean, Dick, Don and Dan. Graveside service for Janet Grabher age 86 of Valentine was on Saturday, Nov. 28th at 2:00 PM at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Valentine. Memorials may be made to the Sandhills Prairie Refuge Association or the Valentine Berean Bible Church. 64
