VIEWPOINT
CHAROLAIS Historic Past – Bright Future
The Charolais breed is blessed
In his December 2021 Viewpoint, J. Neil Orth, AICA Retiring Executive Vice President said, “The future of the Charolais Breed is bright.” I couldn’t agree more. In my first two months on the job, I have been getting acquainted with the AICA staff and absorbing as much information as I can from Neil Orth. As many of you know and some of you witnessed, Neil was inducted into the Saddle & Sirloin Club in Louisville, Kentucky on November 14th. This is a great honor for Neil who served the AICA as Executive Vice President for the past 21 years. Let me offer my congratulations to Neil on a job well done and a successful career serving the beef cattle industry. This fall, I attended the AICA meetings in Louisville, the American Royal, and the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE). I also attended 7 Charolais sales and have been on 20 herd visits in four states. The enthusiasm and positivity of Charolais breeders and their
Amanda Schnoor from Chowchilla, California. To say the least, this was a great set of heifers shown by an outstanding group of young Charolais exhibitors. Before the show began, I was introduced to the AIJCA Board. Wow – was I impressed with this dedicated, hardworking group of young leaders! They not only assisted in the ring during the Junior Heifer Show, but they also assisted with the AICA National Roll of Excellence (ROE) Show and our promotional booth. Their dedication, professionalism and teamwork were certainly on display and they made me proud to be associated with the Charolais breed. The quality of the heifers and bulls exhibited in the AICA National ROE Show at the American Royal is to be commended. These cattle were evaluated by Cheramie Viator from Tomball, Texas who provided positive comments about the quality of the animals and the leadership provided by J. Neil Orth and his staff at the AICA. Likewise, the strong
Thank you for hiring me as your new Executive Vice President! I look forward to your support and advice as we work together to promote the attributes of Charolais cattle. outlook for the future is very encouraging. I have been genuinely impressed with the Charolais herds I have visited. The quality of the cattle has been outstanding. In October, I went to the American Royal to attend the 2021 Royal Breeders Bull Classic which included participation from 30 Classic Club members from 11 states. I watched as these breeders evaluated the bulls entered in this year’s Classic and narrowed the field to the top five bulls overall. As a newcomer to this event, I was impressed with the quality of the bulls and the active participation of both the Charolais breeders exhibiting bulls, as well as those evaluating them. I took in the 2021 Royal Collection Charolais Sale sponsored by the Missouri Charolais Breeders Association. This sale provided an excellent offering of Charolais genetics including: a pick of the herd, donor cows, pick of one herd’s bred heifers, pick of another herd’s open heifers, the right to flush a proven donor and several embryo packages. With active bidding and good participation, this sale generated a strong average and good excitement for the Charolais breed. During my final day at the American Royal, I attended the Junior Charolais Heifer Show where Percentage Charolais heifers and Purebred Charolais heifers were evaluated by
showing of Charolais cattle exhibited at the NAILE a few weeks later was also notable. Congratulations to all the Charolais exhibitors at the American Royal and the NAILE. A special shout-out to the Missouri Charolais Breeders Association and the Kentucky Charolais Association for their support and involvement with these important events. Finally, I was very much inspired by the leadership on display at the AICA Fall meetings held in Louisville. Several significant decisions were made including: 1) Moving ahead with the Canadian Charolais Association to formulate a North American Genetic Evaluation system for Charolais cattle, 2) embarking on development of a new ad campaign and 3) entering into a cooperative agreement with NEOGEN to develop a commercial platform. From the AICA Board of Directors to committee chairs, committee members, and the AIJCA Board, the Charolais breed is blessed with outstanding leaders at the helm. I enjoyed getting to know and visit with many of you during the past two months and I look forward to meeting many more Charolais enthusiasts in the coming weeks and months. Thank you for hiring me as your new Executive Vice President! I look forward to your support and advice as we work together to promote the attributes of Charolais cattle.

PRECISION LIVESTOCK MANAGEMENT SETS THE STAGE FOR INCREASED EFFICIENCY By Linda Eck
Researching animal performance for the purpose of improving efficiency and profits, while also addressing environmental concerns, was a popular topic of the 2021 Listening & Learning session held October 2 at West Virginia University. Surrounded by the beauty and everyday working operations of the university’s Reymann Memorial Farm in Wardensville, breeders attending the event, sponsored by the American-International Charolais Association (AICA) heard of research and cutting-edge technology used to identify efficiencies and fast-track genetic progress. Guy Ficeto, director of feedlot sales for Vytelle, a precision livestock company reshaping how cattle producers worldwide unlock animal performance, praised the university for being a pioneer in the study of feed efficiencies. Vytelle recently merged with GrowSafe, a company that began a partnership with the university in 2003 to study Feed Efficiency (FE) and Residual Feed Intake (RFI) as part of the West Virginia Bull Evaluation

Program. As a result, the WVU Spring 2004 Bull Sale was the first in the United States to offer bulls with GrowSafe generated Feed to Gain data. “We have a very efficient beef cow in terms of production,” Dr. Kevin Shaffer, coordinator of the WVU research program, told the crowd in his opening remarks. “The thing we have to consider though, is there’s a difference in being efficient and effective. We’re efficient at producing something, but are we hitting the right target?”
Selection Choices = Unintended Consequences? Presenting a chart of Yearling Weight EPD trends from different breeds from the 1970s to 2000s, Dr. Shaffer noted increasing trends in those values. “We’re selecting for those values and we’ve made those cows grow more efficiently, but what are some of the unintended consequences,” he asked. Current data from the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center shows Mature Cow Weights, based on a five-year-old cow, to be: Hereford 1,419 lbs. Angus 1,410 lbs. Red Angus 1,409 lbs. Simmental 1,404 lbs. Gelbvieh 1,323 lbs. Limousin 1,391 lbs. Charolais 1,371 lbs. “When Charolais first came to this country there was a little bit inverse relationship in terms of cow size,” he said. “Now, what are supposed to be our maternal breeds are the largest cows that we have.” Realizing that “70 percent of major production costs are credited to feed in some capacity, whether it be pasture, hay or feed,” he addressed producers with the question, “How can we address these costs?” Recognizing that a variety of measures have been studied,
CHAROLAIS JOURNAL
Dr. Shaffer noted the majority of the industry has settled on Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR) or the measure of feed intake to pounds of gain. This, he added, “is relatively easy to measure - a weight in and a weight out” but we’re not looking at things on an individual animal basis. More recently the industry has moved to look at Residual Feed Intake - a measurement that, according to Dr. Shaffer, “allows us to look at maintenance requirements.” “Ultimately about 70 percent of the 70 percent spent on feed is just to keep the animals alive, not to really get any performance out of them,” he added. Dr. Shaffer then used an example of bulls tested at the university to stress the importance of determining RFI. One with an RFI of +0.17 and another with an RFI of -3.31. The bull with the negative RFI ate 3.31 Dry Matter pounds less per day than the average bull in the test group. “0 is average, so -0.17 is just about average,” he said. “When comparing the two, that’s 3.48 pounds a day difference on a Dry Matter basis or 5.8 pounds on an As Fed basis.” Average daily gain, on the negative RFI bull was 4.5 pounds per day. The average, less efficient bull, gained 4.4 pounds per day, but consumed 812 pounds more. He noted a small difference in weight, but not enough to create that much difference in intake. The trial had a Total Mixed Ration feed cost of $113 per ton or .0565 cents per pound.
Over the course of a 140-day feed test, the difference in feed cost was $45.88.
Technology Offers Opportunity Ficeto reiterated Dr. Shaffer’s statement that feed is 70% of all production costs, but added, “change is possible.” In reviewing the work done at WVU, he continued praise of the university’s bull test program and noted that through the use of GrowSafe equipment and technology during the 2015-2016 test period, the annual sale was able to offer bulls with EPDs generated for RFI and Dry Matter Intake (DMI). In 2019 existing Feed Intake nodes were upgraded with new technology to capture data for average daily gain (ADG), daily weights, changes in behavior and water intake. The new technology and equipment can be used in both confinement and pasture settings. As a precision livestock company, Vytelle focuses on fast forwarding genetic progress with the goal of ensuring meat and milk are viable and competitive food choices for future generations. “In our company we have what we call the Triple Challenge,” said Ficeto directing his comments to Global Protein Demand, Sustainable Environment and Producer Economics. “By 2050 the demand for global protein is going to increase 20 to 30 percent, using more feed, land and water,” he said while also emphasizing the importance of sustainability and producer profits. “Everyone of us knows how risky this business is and everything that effects this business from genetics to weather to commodity prices. Our system has a very unique offering to the industry.”
How Consistent is Water Intake? West Virginia University is now utilizing the beef watering system technology to monitor animal body weight remotely along with feed and water intake in a pasture setting. “We hear from folks in the industry that all of these measurements are taken in a dry lot scenario,” said Dr.
Beef Watering Systems Technology CHAROLAIS JOURNAL

Shaffer, noting that their most pressing question is, “Does it apply to me when I’m keeping daughters of these bulls and putting them into a cow herd?” “Our thought here, with our research, is that water is the key component,” he replied to the impending question. “In a grazing scenario what else are we going to have consistent intake of on a daily basis?” “When an animal drinks, the technology captures a front end body weight that can be extrapolated into a whole body weight,” he continued. During the current Phase 1 of research, both steers and bulls are put through a traditional feeding system in a dry lot. Water intake is measured simultaneously with DMI to determine relationships. “Some of the same cattle we take out to a small plot pasture system and graze them through a series of plots over a week’s time,” he explained. “We take forage mass measurements before and after grazing so we get the amount of grass that has disappeared from a plot in a oneday time period. “At the same time we dose them (the cattle) with an inert marker, it’s just a pass through marker and we collect fecal samples. Based on the forage disappearance and how rapidly that marker moves through the digestive tract we can back calculate and predict an individual intake on pasture.” Dr. Shaffer went on to say that researchers can then look at the relationships to determine if there is a way of taking technology learned in a pasture scenario to predict what has been learned from the feedlot. As the university moves into Phase 2 of the research program, plans are to develop divergently selected populations based on efficiency with a goal of 400 commercial cows using bulls that have come through the university evaluation program and the Vytelle database. Steer progeny will be tested through the grazing system. Heifers will also be tested and artificial insemination will be used to continue the movement toward divergent populations.
During this phase researchers will also monitor enterprise revenue, expenses and traditional production variables. Plans call for expanding plot size for grazing forage intake and monitoring to better mimic realistic grazing systems. Other details to be observed include behavioral impacts on grazing efficiency and the environmental impacts of grazing systems focusing mainly on water quality. As research continues into Phase 3, the university will continue developing divergently selected populations based on efficiency while continuing to monitor revenue, expenses and traditional production variables. They will also utilize different animal classes and stages of production to estimate a grazing RFI for replacement females.
Eat Less - Gain More! “That’s the end goal,” said Ficeto. “Find the animals that eat less and gain more.” “We make sure all trials are done the same and standardized,” Ficeto said of the Vytelle Network which boasts the largest efficiency database in the beef cattle industry. Vytelle offers a Beef Marketing Program for Feedlots which allows feedlot operators to measure and report individual average daily gain and weight, detect and flag changes in cattle behavior and reduce cattle handling. “Not too many people think it’s a huge deal, but having the ability to monitor those animals in a 24-hour period without having to take them back to process them or bring them to the hospital, you’re definitely reducing cattle handling,” he said. “It’s actually a pretty big benefit of being able to make decisions based off what you’re learning from the technology.” “The more data we collect, the more accurate we get,” Ficeto told producers. “Precision livestock management is here. It’s no longer blue sky.”

ello, juniors! My name is Weston Schrader, and I am from Wells, KS. Currently, I serve as your 202122 AIJCA Treasurer and At-Large Director. Graduating from Minneapolis High School this spring, I am excited to attend Kansas State University next fall to major in Animal Science with interests in beef cattle genetics and nutrition. As many of you know…our whole family “bleeds purple,” and I can’t wait to be in Manhattan! Attitude is everything. I know we have all heard this at some point. It is a popular expression. It is popular because it is true. Happiness and success begin with your attitude whether it be in the show barn, school, sports, relationships, and everything we are involved in. You can only control what you can control, and you can always control your attitude, no matter the situation
from several trips to the ring. These are the moments that we can really evaluate and improve our level of grit, determination, and attitude. Attitude takes practice. It is hard to have a perfect attitude all the time. Trust me, I know. But having a good attitude, like most things in life, starts at home. How can you expect to keep a good attitude if you don’t practice? I have to remind myself of this quite often. With busy schedules and lots of time-consuming activities, keeping a good attitude can help eliminate stress. The more you do this, the easier it becomes. Things won’t always go your way, that’s just the way life is. Even if you are tired or frustrated about something, don’t let it ruin your day or anyone else’s. It is okay to be tired. Being tired means something is getting

your are facing. Many times throughout my life so far, my attitude has been tested by difficult situations. Sometimes my attitude has been a good example for others, but other times it has needed an adjustment. Attitude is grit. Success demands grit. Grit by definition is “a firmness in character.” A great example of grit can be displayed on the football field. Late in the game, the score is tied and the opponent is about to score. Your defense needs a stop while backed up to your own end zone. Do you step up to the challenge and maintain a positive mindset? Or do you hang your head, let them score, and feel sorry for yourself? You know something is wrong with your hand and are dealing with massive amounts of pain, but your coach needs you to lead your team by running the ball hard on offense and making tough tackles on defense. Do you check yourself out? Or do you fight through the pain and lead your team to victory? If you can maintain a gritty, positive attitude that is contagious within your team, good things will happen. Grit can also be exhibited in the show ring. Maybe a heifer isn’t acting the way you want her to, or your arm is wearing down 24

accomplished. So practice a positive attitude no matter the circumstances. Attitude is contagious. I am so blessed to have so many amazing role models in my life that have shown me how to work and act, such as my mom, dad, other family, and older Junior Board members. Their attitudes are noticed by everyone around them. If the entire Junior Board acts as if life was terrible, would Junior National be very fun for anyone? As leaders, our actions are always being evaluated by adults, peers, and younger kids. Show them an attitude that is positive and contagious. The Charolais breed is filled with extraordinary people and operations. Find someone who demonstrates hard work and a positive attitude every day. Study them, learn from them, thank them. Happy New Year!! I am beyond excited to be back in Denver for the National Western Stock Show this January, and good luck to all of the juniors competing with their projects this winter! Have a great year with great attitudes! CHAROLAIS JOURNAL

All proceeds of the Lot 1 Donor, TR Ms Allie 3606A will be donated to the David & Stephanie Dickerson Family, Bar S Ranch, Paradise, Kansas. The Dickerson Family, along with many others, suffered staggering losses to livestock and property due to wildfires in December of 2021. If you would like to be a part of helping Bar S Ranch in their time of need, please contact AJ or Albert about donating additional funds in any amount to this Charolais family.
It is hard to imagine a better place than Fort Worth to offer this great opportunity – a Proven Donor alongside two of her elite progeny. As just a spring heifer calf, Allie was named the National Champion Female at the 2014 National Western Stock Show, one of the youngest females ever to achieve this honor. After her show career ended, she has been the foundation of the F Bar 5 Herd. Her daughters have also claimed success in the show ring including F5 Ms Floss F814, the 2020 Fort Worth National ROE Champion Female and Reserve Grand Champion Bred & Owned Female at the 2019 Junior National. Her progeny success in this year alone has her earning the current rank of #1 AICA Show Dam of the Year through the fall of this show season. Her dam Dari 0642X sold for $42,500 in the Thomas Ranch Dispersal. Allie’s maternal sib, TR Ms Bree 4559B produced the 51st National Champion Female for Kelton Arthur.

Selling 3/4 interest and full possession. You’ll be hard pressed to find a yearling bull that is as powerful as WBR. Stout and big legged, but still soft made and big middled, he is the kind that can work on anything. He is sired by none other than Outsider, who continues to be at the top of the food chain when it comes to siring show champions. On the bottom side find J&J Angelina 668, a daughter of National Champion 3R’s Angelina. Angelina 668 is a flushmate sib to J&J Westbrook, the 49th National Intermediate Champion Bull and Reserve Grand Champion Bull at the 2017 Junior National. But don’t let that phenotype and pedigree stereotype him. WBR can perform in both the ring and in the pasture, and who wouldn’t want a pen of calves as powerful as he is?

With a proven base of some of the breed’s leading ladies such as JWK Vanessa D029, her daughter OH Vanessa 488, RLL Goin’ Places, VCR Mac IV 317, and multiple daughters and granddaughters of WCR Miss Perfection 1107 of Camp Cooley fame, your own leading lady is there waiting for you. A first-time consignor to Cowtown, Braden has pulled out all the stops with this one. He said, “The ribbons from winning the August class are just as blue as the ribbons from winning the others.” A daughter of Mamie 8001, BHSC’s most proven and consistent cow family, her family traces a pedigree back to the famed Duke 248 Donor from M6 Ranch. The sire of this stout, maternal, female is none other than DTR Mr Brightside 1107G2 who has caught the attention of many a breeder since he showed up on the scene just a short time ago. Braden says Brightside has changed the direction of his program for the better and we are excited to see what this summer born female can do under the lights of Cowtown and beyond! A lot can be said for the consistent power, volume, and look these Resource females have but the picture tells the story. The Parish family doesn’t mess around when it comes to quality females and this one is no different. Perhaps one of the most complete Absolute daughters in production, Lot 13 | Flush Sells – Runaway Bride checks all the boxes when it comes to phenotype. Long made and big LHC Runaway Bride 8052 middled, she radiates feminine power and does so in a way that leaves you asking for more. Her front pasture looks make all more the sense when you learn she was the 2019 Reserve National Senior Heifer Calf Champion. Her dam 0052, was Clint and Kelly’s, of Long Hall Cattle, choice of the famed M&M cow herd and her daughter continues the legacy of Duchess 433 that was the origin of so many of those great females. AICA MEMBERSHIP Obituary
Brett Beavers, 41.5 to the day, passed away on Saturday, December 11, 2021, at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Iowa. A visitation will be held on Thursday, December 16, 2021 from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in State Center, Iowa. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 17, 2021 at Trinity Lutheran Church, with Reverend Robert Ricard officiating. In accordance with what Brett would have wanted, jeans are encouraged. A private family burial will take place at a later date. Brett was born on June 11, 1980, in Marshalltown, Iowa to Frank and Leeann (Croker) Beavers. He grew up on the family farm outside of Collins. Brett graduated from Collins-Maxwell with the class of 1999. Brett took great pride in representing the Collins-Maxwell-Baxter Raiders on the basketball court and as an all-conference pitcher on the baseball diamond. One of his greatest thrills was pitching at Principal Park (home of the AAA Iowa Cubs) for CMB at the state tournament. After high school, he attended Northeast Community College in Calmar, Iowa. He married soulmate Tina Ketelsen on June 7, 2008, in Charter Oak,
Iowa. The couple relocated to a farm in Collins where they began their lives together. Brett worked as a mechanic for Van Wall in Nevada, IA for 13 years before focusing on his Charolais cattle and farming full-time. Brett was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in State Center, served on the Story County Cattleman’s Board for 8 years, was an active Charolais Board member for 16 years, and a Bottle Bucket Calves Superintendent for 18 years. He had a great love for his family and enjoyed spending time with them. He also loved farming, his Charolais cattle, playing kickball with his nieces and nephews, coaching the fundamentals of basketball and baseball/softball, playing cards, walking the pasture with his kids and looking at cows, Halloween hayrack rides, watching sports, and attending concerts with friends. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 13.5 years Tina Beavers of Collins, IA; children Madison (11) and Austin (9); parents Frank and Leeann Beavers of Colo, IA; sister Laura (Aaron) Greenwell of Ellston, IA; grandmother Lorraine Beavers; in-laws Larry (Jan) Ketelsen; sistersin-law Susan (Brandon) Leek, Joan Ketelsen, Cindy (Robert) Kranda; brother-in-law Brian (Renata) Ketelsen; many aunts and uncles; many nieces and nephews; and many close friends. Third Annual Veterinary/Medical Student Professional Scholarship Awarded
(l to r) Miss Charolais USA 2021 Emily Meyer; Miss Charolais USA 2022 Baylee Butler; Recipient Rachel Kort; ACF Board of Directors J. Neil Orth and Kaitlyn Chism.
On October 23, 2021 in conjunction with the American-International Charolais Association events in Kansas City, Missouri, the American Charolais Foundation (ACF) awarded the third annual Russell W. Ludeke – Harold Christopher Truax II Memorial Award. This $4,000 veterinary/medical student professional scholarship was awarded to Rachel Kort, Nebraska for 2021. Kort is in her first year at Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Kort states, “From growing up on our family farm to being highly involved in both 4-H and FFA to attending an agriculture-based university, I have learned what it truly takes to be an advocate for the agricutlural industry and the work-ethic needed to be a successful agriculturalist. I look forward to utilizing what I have gained from my different experiences to continue learning and growing in production agriculture as a veterinary professional.” An initial gift, from QuestMark Information Management, Inc., Charolais breeders Larry and Beth Ludeke of Bar J Charolais, Liverpool, Texas and the Evelyn Gay Duhon Family of JVS Cattle Co., Sulphur, Louisiana, will provide professional awards annually to those impacted by the Charolais breed.
J. Neil Orth Leadership Award Presents Percentage Heifer Show Scholarship at the American Royal In 2021, the Percentage Charolais Junior Heifer Show was brought to the American Royal and with that the opportunity for Charolais members to compete for the title of Supreme Champion Junior Breeding Heifer. This new show champion was in need of a scholarship sponsor. Neil and the ACF thought what a great way to highlight two groups that have greatly impacted his career – youth passionate for Charolais cattle and the American Royal Livestock Show. Congratulations to Eli Dehan, Missouri, exhibitor of the 2021 Junior Percentage Heifer Show Champion. Eli received the inaugural $500 J. Neil Orth Leadership Award scholarship and the opportunity to compete for the $5,000 Stanley E. Stout Memorial Supreme Heifer Scholarship and Bud Sloan Supreme Heifer Trophy.
Champion Percentage Heifer: SCF Dolly exhibited by Elijah Dehan, La Monte, Mo.

Calf scours are not inevitable. A strong prevention program is non-negotiable. Dependable scour prevention is essential for calf welfare, employee morale and business profitability. The immune system’s response to vaccination is variable and unpredictable. That’s why giving preformed antibodies instead of relying on a vaccine to stimulate antibody production is so important. by this product. (And no, I’m not.)
