VOICE

Building a Breed and a Family

A visit to Larry James’ farm near Paris, Mo., will quickly show the importance of the Maine-Anjou breed in the family’s lives. James was honored during the American Royal as the 2018 American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) Heritage Road Hall of Fame inductee. James humbly says he hasn’t done anything out of the ordinary to deserve the award, but is honored that others feel he has contributed enough to the breed he loves to receive it. The James’ journey in the Maine-Anjou business started in the early 1970s when sons Ronnie and Rickie were showing steers and they met Dave Steen, former AMAA commercial marketing director, who at the time was raising and selling cattle. Larry liked the looks of the Maine-cross calves and a conversation with Steen led to the eventual purchase of four MaineAnjou heifers. “We really liked the idea of raising the calves the boys would show, so Helen and I decided to make the trek to Montana to pick out some heifers,” says Larry. “The morning we went to look at the heifers we became hooked on the Maine-Anjou breed because of their incredible disposition. We could walk right up to them.” Through the years, the James family had fed out cattle. Larry grew up with Herefords and Angus and they used Simmental in their herd CONTINUED ON PAGE... 16

The Maine-Angus program is a initiative created by the American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) to showcase the complementation of Maine-Anjou genetics when crossed with Angus or Red Angus cattle. This program will reveal Maine-Anjou cattle’s ability to enhance feed efficiency and red meat yield when placed on British based genetics. This program should provide seedstock that will increase production and carcass yield through heterosis. The name Maine Angus is both strong and informative by stating exactly what breeds are present in said animal. The standard is both parents must be registered at the AMAA, American Angus Association (AAA) or Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) will provide validated lineage and genetic information along with valuable EPDs. Through a partnership with the AAA our EPDs will be updated with the latest genetic evaluation by the AAA which will provide the breeders and customers the best genetic prediction available. This program is focused on producing quality registered offspring that will aid in the incorporation of Maine-Anjou

genetics into the mainstream of the USA beef sector. PROGRAM STANDARDS • Maine Angus refers to cattle with the following characteristics: • The animal will have between 3/8 Maine-Anjou to 5/8 MaineAnjou blood and have between 3/8 registered Angus to 5/8 registered Angus and/or registered Red Angus blood. • The standard is both parents must be registered at the AMAA, American Angus Association (AAA) or Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) will provide validated lineage. • Qualifying cattle can have no more than 1/8 of non-registered blood or other breeds. • A registered Maine Angus bull must be proven free of genetic defects PHA and TH. Depending on the Maine Angus bull’s genetic makeup, the individual must also be proven free of known Angus lethal genetic defects (Ex. AM, NH and CA) and/or known lethal Red Angus genetic defects (Ex. AM, NH, CA

and OS) whether determined by pedigree or test. • A registered Maine Angus female must be proven free of PHA and TH, whether identified by pedigree or test. MAINE ANGUS COLOR STANDARDS • All qualifying individuals will be predominately solid black or red in color. White markings are only allowed on the underline and switch of the tail. • Starting Jan. 1, 2019 - All animals that have qualified and registered as Maine Angus prior to Jan. 1, 2019 will retain their Maine Angus papers but will not be able to exhibit/show in the Maine Angus division, however, these animals are eligible to show as MaineTainers.

Happy New Year! I hope that you and your crew had a blessed holiday season. The year of 2018 was a good year for the breed as we have seen a renewed interest in Maine-Anjou cattle from outside the current membership and some avenues opening up within the beef industry where we can work. We had a great turnout at the National Maine-Anjou Show in Kansas City and a strong showing at the North American. For those of you that did not get to attend the American Royal it was a great honor to induct Mr. Larry James into the American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) Heritage Road Hall of Fame. Larry and his family have contributed greatly to the advancement of the breed through the years and continue to be loyal supporters of Maine-Anjou. Mr. James has been a true advocate for the breed and produced many cattle that have impacted a lot of herds. This honor is well deserved, congratulations Larry! These are exciting times with the National Western approaching and the kick off of the New Year. We have a strong offering consigned for the Bright Lights sale with herd sire prospects, select open heifers, elite bred heifers and frozen genetics. The sale will be held on Saturday, January 19 at 3 p.m. (MST) in the Livestock Center Arena in Denver, Colo. Something that will be new this year is our addition of a display tent on bull alley in the Yards, please stop by, we would love to visit. If you need a catalog or any assistance with the sale, please, give us a call! Other highlights include the first genetic evaluation performed by Angus Genetics Inc., (AGI) that has been updated to Digital Beef. As you look this over you may see some difference in the EPDs on your cattle, this is not uncommon. Three major things that this can be a result of are: -The inclusion of genomics on cattle that have had DNA profiles performed and their ancestors. The DNA test provides new information for the cattle’s genetic propensity for performance. Many of the tests conducted are the equivalent of performance records on 15-20 offspring for that individual. This may

change your numbers, but ultimately it will make them more accurate in predictability. The DNA also lessens bias from the environment or reporting practices of the breeders. -The updating of Angus EPDs on registered Angus cattle that is in our herdbook and maybe ancestors of your cattle. In previous genetic evaluations many of the Angus animals that were added retained the same EPDs that they came into the AMAA herdbook with and it was not updated as those individuals EPDs moved in the Angus evaluation. This was just the practice of our previous provider. This also should make your EPDs more accurate! - The inclusion of over 4,000 weights and a large amount of ultrasound data that have been reported in 2018. A huge thank you to all that submitted this information, it is much needed and beneficial! MAINE ANGUS RULE UPDATE The AMAA Board of Director’s have added a new color rule to the Maine Angus program. The new rule will begin Jan. 1, 2019 and reads as follows: - All qualifying individuals will be predominately solid black or red in color. White markings are only allowed on the underline and switch of the tail. NOTES - All animals that do not fit the color rule and are registered in the Maine Angus program prior to Jan. 1, 2019, will retain their Maine Angus papers but will not be able to exhibit/show in the Maine Angus division but are eligible to show as MaineTainers. Please contact me if you have any questions. As always, if we can assist you in anyway, please let us know. Thank you for a great year at AMAA and we hope to see you down the road! Take care, Blake MAINE-ANJOU- Vision, Vigor, Value!

MAINE-ANJOU Commercial Connection

JOSHUA CRIBBS AMAA Commercial Developement Director

The Maine Max Bull Test and Sale is off to a great start for 2019. The offering is marked by continued breeder support of commercial focus and establishing a bull market for that sector of the beef industry. This year’s test is epically unique, as we begin to see the seeds that were sown a few years back with the creation of the Maine Angus program – the set is made up of multiple Maine Angus bulls. Even though bulls come from multiple sources and different regions of the United States, one common theme can be seen among the group… the bulls in this program mirror a producer focused on longevity, performance and consistency. It speaks volumes for breeder focus when a group can look this uniform. The focus on commercial impact and balance in breeding decisions will allow bull buyers from different programs to select and use a bull from this test group to accomplish their breeding objectives and strengthen their herd for the better. Bull buyer selection comes from many different decisions, but one that has become obvious in my travel this fall is performance – buyers want, and need, performance. Performance is looked at in many different lights, but how do we define true performance? This fall I spent some time out in Utah with a group of breeders that require performance at the forefront of their selection pressure. It’s important to understand that in order to be successful and stay effective we must constantly evolve. The trip to Utah taught me a lot about the cattle business and provided me with true insight as to what it means to label something performance driven. Imagine a place where cattle run from an elevation of 5,000 feet all the way up to 11,000 feet. A location with annual rainfall totaling around 16 inches, but this year

Photos highlighting Josh’s recent trip to Utah. JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2019

10

was faced with a drought and had only received two inches by late October, early November. Cow/calf producers run cattle on such vast and rough terrain that they can’t supplement the cows or the calves during summer grazing because the cattle will group in one area and not forage enough to survive. Can you picture it? A place where cattle must walk 20 miles home at the end of the grazing season, and after a week of being there they still wean calves that average over 650 pounds! That certainly puts a whole new meaning on the words “true performance.” Let’s not forget to mention, these cattle have to be genetically geared to avoid brisket disease. The longer I hold my position and travel the country visiting with MaineAnjou breeders and commercial breeders that use Maine-Anjou genetics, the stronger my appreciation grows for the effectiveness of the cattle we offer. I have great admiration for our breeders who can adapt their breeding program using Maine-Anjou genetics to fit different environments and are productive and profit generating! As we come to a close in 2018 and start to look forward to the New Year, things are certainly looking toward a strengthened energy around the Maine-Anjou business. With the commercial driven bull sale in the spring – held March 28th on DVAuctions – and the forward outlook of our impact on the beef industry, it’s safe to say there are great times ahead of us. I urge you, stay committed to performance. By doing so, we aid in the impact Maine-Anjou is having and will have on the industry. Plus, we all know that cattle are all eventually sold by the pound!

Mr. Larry James

By Cody Tebbenkamp, Past AMAA Board Member Heritage Road was established by the American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) in order to properly recognize those that have gone above and beyond in their efforts to encourage growth within the Maine-Anjou breed.

prior to the addition of Maines. After using Maine bulls and feeding out the calves, they found the Maine-Anjou cattle not only calved easier, but they also were finished more quickly and at a lighter weight than some of the other breeds. As the years continued on and the bigger stockyards closed, Larry found it more difficult to find a place to send fat cattle and he changed his management practices and quit feeding out cattle, but the Maine-Anjou cattle continued on in his cowherd. Bulls continued to be sold and heifers kept as replacements. “We have seen the breeding cattle industry change a lot through the years. From how we handle frozen semen to the way the cattle look. Somehow we’ve

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2019

14

survived all these years,” Larry says. When he began using AI in the herd he used amps of bulls like Epinal, Capone and Cunia, and while every now and then Larry likes to use one of those older bulls, he likes the ease of today’s technology making everything go much more smoothly. “I’ve always been partial to the fullblood Maines,” Larry says. “Once we switched to the blacks, in the early days of the changes, it was hard to find cattle we liked.” A couple years after their initial start in the Maine-Anjou business, in 1976, the James’ started entering bulls in the University of Missouri Performance Testing Station. They won many rate of gain and feed efficiency awards with their consignments. They also started showing extensively, and in 1979, Ronnie and Rickie exhibited the grand champion and reserve grand champion heifers at the National Junior Show in Tulsa, Oklahoma. “We began traveling to all the major shows and even to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo,” Larry says. “In 1981, we had the second high point Maine-Anjou female nationally. We came a long ways from those four heifers we had purchased seven years before.” In 1982, Larry James and his family were named National Breeders of the Year. These cattle led to many more winners in the show ring. A heifer they called Jillmaica had a successful show career in 1986, being named reserve champion at the American Royal, Denver, Fort Worth and the Missouri State Fair. In 1981, Larry was elected to the American Maine-Anjou Association

Mr. Larry James, his wife Helen, and their family have long been ardent promoters of the values of this great breed of cattle. James Farms joined the American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) in the early 70’s and was one of the noted breeding establishments for Fullblood Maine-Anjou cattle. The efforts of the James Farms breeding program were recognized on the national level with James Farms being named the 1982 AMAA Breeder of the Year. With time comes change, during the transition of Maine-Anjou breeding programs across the county so did James Farms breeding program. Through it all, James Farms continued to promote, with an astonishing tenure of exhibiting at the Missouri State Fair for 45 consecutive years. Leadership along with youth development were two very important aspects of the business to Larry. Larry gave of his time, talent and vision to two terms on the AMAA Board of Directors, leadership roles in the Missouri Maine-Anjou Association along with a cumulative group of individuals that began the ground work for what is considered a very elite junior organization in the beef industry the American Junior MaineAnjou Association. One of the great testament’s to Larry’s character is that of family and loyalty. His son’s, Rickie and Ronnie, now carry on the James Farms name along with their children and grandchildren. One of Larry’s grandchildren, Anna, states “Grandpa truly has a passion for cattle and the breed. He has passed his passion on to my generation and I hope to pass that same passion on to my children.” Ashley added, “Grandpa has always put a lot of effort into getting young people interested in the cattle industry. His children, grandchildren and great grandchildren are examples, but his commitment to the next generation of cattle breeders goes far beyond his family.” Yes, Larry, I would say that the James Farms program that you and Helen built is cherished by your family and you should be very proud! It is with great honor that a portrait of Larry and Helen will hang in a place of distinction, on Heritage Road, at the AMAA headquarters in Platte City, MO, along with an identical portrait given to Larry to be hung in his personal place of distinction. Larry, from all of AMAA breeders across the country (both past and present), the AMAA Board of Directors, AMAA Executive Vice President, Mr. Blake Nelson & AMAA staff we welcome you to Heritage Road.

board of directors, which he served on for 12 years. During his time on the board, Steve Bernhard was hired and then John Boddicker. He says both were good leaders for the breed and helped get the Maine-Anjou Association where it is today. “We had to make some tough decisions to keep the association going,” Larry says. “It has become something that has continued to be important to us because of all the breed has done for our family.” The James’ have continued to show and breed Maine-Anjou cattle for all these years. Larry says he likes the breed for their great temperament, but also for the extra thickness and beautiful, clean, stylish phenotype. The herd once was up to 350 cows, but currently is at about 60, with most having Maine-Anjou influence. Bulls are sold at public auction, as well as privately on the farm. They also have a club calf sale the

last part of September and have had a few online sales. “Selling good cattle brings back repeat buyers and word of mouth will bring more buyers,” Larry says. “We are also happy that the fourth generation has started showing.” The 2018 Missouri State Fair marked 45 years of exhibiting for the James family and four generations showing cattle. Larry says many keep encouraging him to show, but he’s ready for the next generation to be in charge of that part of the operation. “I feel confident that my family will carry on the Maine-Anjou herd and I’m very proud of that,” Larry says. “I’ll always love the fullbloods. I think some of the older genetics could benefit today’s herds.” His love of the cattle business and particularly the Maine-Anjou business has also been passed on to the next generations. His grandchildren all showed cattle and two of his granddaughters are

now building their own herds. He enjoyed seeing his great-grandson show a calf last summer at the state fair. Larry and his late wife, Helen were always supporters of youth programs in agriculture and his favorite, the American Junior Maine-Anjou Association. Granddaughter Ashley says, “Grandpa has always put a lot of effort into getting young people interested in the cattle industry. His children, grandchildren and great grandchildren are examples, but his commitment to the next generation of cattle breeders goes far beyond his family.” “This has truly been a family operation and has bonded us together. The money we’ve spent to make our herd better has also made our family better,” Larry says. “The time learning how to compete, how to win and how to lose has brought us together and helped us build lifetime friendships.”

AMAA DNA rules and regulations

All bulls born after January 1, 2014 must be TH and PHA free by test or pedigree in order to register. If a bull is found to be a carrier, he can register as a foundation or performance bull only, but all progeny will have to test free of that defect in order to register. Foundation bulls will carry their Maine-Anjou percentage to their offspring. All AI sires, regardless of breed and/or commercial, must have DNA, TH and PHA on file prior to registering any progeny. Maine Angus bulls must be TH and PHA free as well as AM, NH and CA free for black Angus and AM, NH, CA and OS free for Red Angus.

Females • • •

Carrier heifers out of carrier bulls born after January 1, 2014 can only be registered as foundation or performance only. Foundation carriers will carry their Maine-Anjou percentage to their offspring, but their offsprings must test free of that defect. All donor dams must have DNA, TH and PHA on file prior to registering their ET calves. If a donor is dead before a sample was procured, you must DNA, TH and PHA test all ET calves in order to register them. Maine Angus heifers must be TH and PHA free.

new in 2019 DNA process updates We will be adjusting the DNA testing process beginning in January 2019 in hopes of making this a quicker and easier process. This only changes the testing process through GeneSeek. We will still accept results from other labs. The new process is as follows: 1. Any animal being tested must have a number created within Digital Beef. Bulls and suspect heifers will have a performance number. AI sires and donor dams must be registered, have their foreign pedigree added or have a commercial number created to order testing. 2. After logging into Digital Beef and viewing your herd, find the animal that needs testing and check the box for DNA. If you have more than one animal to test, be sure to check the box for all the animals that need testing.

3. On the left side of the screen, select DNA. All of the animals you selected in the previous step should appear in this list. 4. For each animal, select the reason for testing. 5. If you use a hair card, blood card , TSU vial, etc., enter that unique barcode in the designated box. If you are not using one of those sample types, leave the box black, and GeneSeek will assign a barcode when the sample at arrives at the lab. Samples without unique barcodes must be properly labeled. 6. Select the sample type.

7. Next, select the tests you would like to order. 8. If you are testing for parent verification, you can enter the alternative sire’s registration number in the designated box. 9. Please leave any notes you would like the AMAA DNA department or GeneSeek to be aware of.

10. After clicking save, your DNA test request will be sent to the AMAA, and your account will be charged for the testing. You may then mail your samples to GeneSeek Inc., Attn: Samples, 4131 North 48th St., Lincoln, NE 68504-1408. JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2019

The cattle feeding industry has

seen a strong influx in Quality Grade genetics and while chasing these premiums Yield Grades have suffered. Finding a balance and avoiding discounts is key. Maine-Anjou can make a difference with carcass driven Yield Grade genetics.

Your 2019 dues must be paid to remain in the program.

AMAA DUES All members should have received a dues reminder in the mail. Your 2018 dues must be paid in order to register or transfer animals. You may pay your dues by logging into your online account or by mailing in the reminder card with a check. REGISTRATIONS Please dispose of any old registration and self-billing worksheets. The AMAA will no longer offer a 10% online discount for registration work that is completed through Digital Beef. The AMAA will assess a $5 fee for any registration work received by fax, e-mail or by mail. To avoid this fee, please log into your online Digital Beef account to complete all registration work. New forms are included in this issue and can also be downloaded from our main webpage under Digital Beef/ Registrations – Printable Forms. If you need assistance logging into your online account please contact us at maine@amaapc.com. If work is faxed or e-mailed it is the responsibility of the breeder to give us a follow up phone call to make sure that the work is legible and to cover all fees. BLOCK REGISTRATION DISCOUNTS Want to save on registration costs? Consider pre-paying for a block of registrations. The cost savings are as follows: • 15 head - 12% • 25 head - 15% • 50 head - 20% • 75 head - 25% • 100 head - 30% Block may only be used on animals under 13 months of age and may not be used on steers or foundation animals. Blocks will only be valid from January 1 - December 31 of each year. Any unused block registration numbers will expire. If you are interested in learning more about block purchases, please contact us at 816-431-9950. RUSH ORDERS: If you are selling an animal, we ask that you register and transfer the animal in a timely manner to avoid extra charges and to assure

buyers they are purchasing from a reputable business person. Rushes will be done in the order received; a rush fee is currently $50 (covers eight head). No work will be released until payment is complete. Rush work is processed ahead of the regular work that is received in our office and mailed by regular mail within one to two business days. We will do our best to complete rush work that is received in our office by 2 p.m. (Monday – Friday). There is no same-day turnaround. If requiring a registration number only, it will still be considered a rush as we still have to process the work to obtain the number. HELPFUL TIPS WHEN REGISTERING

To avoid delays in your registration work during our busy season follow the tips below.

Double check that all blanks and information are correct and complete before mailing or submitting online. Things most commonly missed are: o Missing herd prefix and herd ID o Birthdates o Date of sale o Name of animal o Payment Make sure the person that is registering the animal owns the dam with the exception of ET calves. If an ET calf, make sure the donor dam has been DNA, PHA & TH tested and that we have the results on file. If you are checking on work please e-mail us at paige@amaapc.com. When calling or e-mailing please have the name and breeder number of the person submitting the work. When registering annual active dams for performance only animals please submit them online if you have the capabilities. This will help the registrar processing tremendously. We appreciate you and your business and want to make sure that the registration process runs as smooth as possible. Thank you in advance for your extra time in making sure all work is correct, complete and received in a timely manner.

REGISTRATIONS FOR UPCOMING SHOWS It is now time to register show animals for fall and winter shows. Please keep in mind during the show season you will need to allow at least two to three weeks for turnaround on registrations and transfers sent in to our office. If a paper is needed within that time, a rush fee ($50 per eight head) will be required before the work will be completed. BULL CALF REGISTRATION If registering a bull calf born after Jan. 1, 2014, it must be TH/PHA free by parentage or have testing completed prior to registering and on file with the AMAA. Carriers will no longer be registered, but may be entered as a foundation animal. All progeny out of a Foundation carrier bull needs to be tested free of that defect prior to registration. If registrations are submitted before testing has been completed, the animal will not be registered. Instead, the animal will be given a performance number at a non-refundable penalty charge of $10. Once the animal has been tested the registration may be completed at the regular rate. Please plan accordingly as testing can take up to threefour weeks. FOUNDATION ANIMALS Non-registered bulls and females must be entered as a foundation animal prior to MaineTainer progeny being registered. All current “P” (performance only) cattle will be grand-fathered into the program. If the sire is an AI sire and registered at another breed association, the pedigree and testing must be on file with the AMAA. The charge to add a sire pedigree will be a one-time charge of $40. If the AMAA finds that the pedigree has already been paid for by another breeder, the $40 charge will not be applied. Dams registered at another breed association may also be added for a one-time charge of $25. See the new self-billing sheet for foundation fees. ONLINE TRANSFERS When transferring an animal on line make sure there is not a member number already created for the buyer. Creating more than one number for an individual creates

registration problems later. If you find the buyer in the system at a different address please notify the buyer first to confirm the address and then notify the Maine office to update the account. It is always a good idea to always search for the buyer using the search tools before doing the work that way if they have a different address it is caught before entering the registration and transfer. When creating a new profile for a buyer please make sure to never give a junior a farm name. Please enter the junior’s name on the farm line and also as the contact. DNA, TH AND PHA REQUIREMENTS

Prior to registering any ET calves, all donor dams (including commercial or nonregistered dams) must have DNA, TH and PHA on file in our office. Also, all AI sires are required to have the same on file. Therefore, our office will hold any ET registrations submitted out of dams without testing on file as well as all registrations out of AI sires that do not have complete testing on file.

If the donor dam is deceased and not tested, we do require that the ET(s) have the tests done, in the absence of the donor’s records. The DNA, TH and PHA testing can be done at GeneSeek. A submission form is found on our Web site, maine-anjou.org. Maine-Anjou samples are put into testing at GeneSeek on Wednesdays, please plan accordingly when submitting. DNA results will be back in the AMAA office late the next week after the testing begins; TH and PHA results will be in our office two weeks later, usually on a Thursday. We would like to start sending the test results by e-mail only, please make sure we have an up-to-date e-mail address for you, if applicable. MAINE/ANGUS PAPERS If you wish to obtain a Maine/Angus registration select the MA/Angus box when registering on line. You will receive an error that AMAA staff must check the testing and percentage requirements so please make sure to validate your entry to save it so that that AMAA can check the entry. If you submit a registration on paper, please put Maine/Angus in the comment section of the application. If the animal does not qualify

as a Maine/Angus it will be recoded as a regular Mainetainer. A Maine/Angus paper will be blue in color, have Maine/Angus under the Maine Logo, and will have MaineTainer across the center of the paper. The animal can be shown as a MaineTainer or Maine Angus. Requirements: *Off spring must be 3/8 - 5/8 to qualify. *Bulls and Heifers must be TH/ PHA free by parents or by test *Bulls must be NH, CA and AM free by parents or free by test. Angus pedigrees will not be assumed free of these defects. Bulls must be clean of DS if out of a Red Angus. *Angus percentages will only be counted from actual registered Angus. Commercial Angus percentages will not be used in the Maine/Angus equation. NEW MEMBERS All new members must choose a program when submitting a new membership. The two programs that are offered are MAPP and Breeders Choice. More information on these two programs is available by visiting maineanjou.org and clicking on “Member Services” “MAPP Agreement.” If a membership is submitted without choosing a program, the new member will be placed in the Breeders Choice program. OTHER AMAA UPDATES Please make sure to update any change in address, phone numbers or e-mails with the AMAA by e-mailing us at maine@amaapc. com, or by logging into your online account. If you have a credit card on file and have received a new card, please make sure to call us to replace the new card on file. Credit cards are not automically saved when paying online. Kansas Family Finds Success in Helping Others

Raising two young boys on the ranch and in the cattle business is something that Shawn and Dana Mills have always known they would do—it’s in their blood. Helping other youth have these same experiences is their way of giving back. They say it wasn’t long ago that they were the ones needing to learn new and different practices in the show cattle industry, so they want to be a source for others. Many in the Maine-Anjou business have been mentors to the Mills family through the years. “Dave Steen (former AMAA commercial marketing director) got my dad, Jim Robison, started using Maine-Anjou bulls nearly 20 years ago,” Dana says. “Dad liked them because the genetics increased our weaning weights. When the JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2019

boys started showing, we wanted them to have Maines because of their great temperament.” The Mills family has a 500-head cowcalf operation in southeast Kansas near Grenola. About 120 of those cows are registered Maine-Anjou or have Maine influence and the rest are an Angus/ Hereford cross. Artificial insemination has been used extensively, especially on the registered cows, which Shawn says has helped them to better manage three calving seasons on the ranch and improve their genetics. This management addition has strengthened reproductive health in the herd, as has the use of clean-up bulls with desirable genetics. The top end of the heifers calves are

kept for replacements or sold as show heifers along with some of the steers. The Mills’ will also market females and pairs depending on the climatic conditions of the year. Their boys, TJ, 11 and Emery, 8, also select their show calves from the herd. “The boys like to be able to compete in the bred and owned division at shows,” Shawn says. “And doing well with homeraised calves makes it just that much better.” The Maine-Anjou breed has become important to the Mills’ because of their flexibility to be used as breeding cattle, show cattle or be sent to the feedyard to be finished out. The docility of the breed has given TJ and Emery the opportunity to start showing at a younger age than
