Tom Lockwood Horse Sales moves to Giddings, Texas. After 79 years leading the way in livestock marketing, Port City Stockyards held it's final auction on October 23, 2010. Tom Lockwood's No Nonsense Horse Sale was that final page in the history of Port City. Founded in Houston in 1931 by current president of Port City Stockyards, JD Sartwelle Jr.'s Grandfather. This final sale in Sealy marked a milestone for Tom Lockwood. This was Tom's 50th Catalog Livestock Auction. Prior to Tom starting his horse sales company in 2000, he had managed 22 registered Hereford Auctions. Interesting to note, one of those bull sales was also at Port City. As one door closes, another door opens, and so it was for Tom Lockwood Hors Sales. Tom's Spring Roundup #29 will be held at Giddings Livestock Auction. The owners, facility, lcoation and town all fill the bill for continued successful horse sales that offer a convernient setting for our buyers and sellers, The owners Alan Lindner, Melvin Schoenst, and Rick Sodek have over 100 years combined experience in the livestock business. Giddings is 48 miles from Austin, highways 290 and 77 gives easy access to most of the people of Texas. The barn is lcoated 1 mile south of Hwy 290 east in Giddings. Turn south at the stop light at James A Turman, CR 226, which is at the corner of Ramada Inn on Hwy 290. The Ramada Inn will be our sale headquarters offering special rates for our buyers and sellers. There are 17 restaurants in Giddings. Tom's last sale at Sealy featured several highlights. The buyers proved once again that if you have the goods, you will be rewarded. Lynn Sechelski of Franklin had the high selling horse, a 2003 Palomino Stallion, Col. Joel White of Pauls Valley, OK dropped the hammer on a final bid of $4,600 on this "do anything" pasture and arena horse. Sellling at halter, a Yearling Palomino Gelding belonging to Joe White of Waco, TX brought $1,600. The high selling loose horse was a 2 year old Blue Roan Mare that brought $1,000 for Marc Turicchi of Atoka, OK. Quality horses with color still sell well. Texas A&M sold 7 open broodmares by Mr Colonel Tee, an own son of Colonel Freckles, out of a Doc Tari mare. The top seller of this special offering brought $825. Wild Wild Cattle

Cowboyin’ doesn’t often get as wild as it did fifty years ago. Most pastures are smaller, cattle see riders more often and are usually easier to handle. However, things can still get wild now and then and some old cows aren’t a bit bashful about tryin’ to get in a feller’s hip pocket. That’s when the adrenaline starts pumpin’ in a feller and makes him wonder why he keeps coming back. Ol’ Fred had served his time lookin’ at the back end of another man’s wild cows in bad country, moved to town and took on a job that paid better than cowboyin’. Still, he’d sneak off every now and then and help a friend work cattle. It was kind of a vacation from the everyday grind and reminded him of his long-ago youth. That’s why, when the opportunity came along to head for West Texas and a couple of days of cowboyin’, he signed on in a hurry. He told his wife that it was a chance to put some miles on his rope horse but she knew different. It was really for him. Anyway, he ends up with his traveling partner, and the ranch owner (George) on the first day , makin’ a big circle back through the canyons. George told both men that there were some bad cows back in that country that didn’t get gathered very often and it wouldn’t hurt to see if they could ease a few of them into the bunch. If possible, he’d like to get ‘em shipped because they kept all the other cattle wild. The riders topped out over a range of hills and split up along the fence line. George’s last orders were, “Just push anything you see back towards the corrals. And don’t take chances with these ol’ gals. Some of them will Page 80

They may be wild but, they won’t take a man on horseback out in the open.” He jogged a ways before easin’ over the top of a little ridge. Looking down into the valley, he spotted three black cows and their calves. Those ol’ gals stood as high as a horse, were about as wide as his hands and each sported a rack of horns that sure looked wicked. As soon as they saw Freddie, the cows had their heads up and showed lots of interest. “I’ll just ease around and give ‘em a push towards the pens,” figured Freddie. “They’ll take off at a trot and I can just keep them moving ‘til we hit the main bunch. They’ll settle down when they get with the rest of the cattle.” He slithered Clyde, his big bay horse, down the rocky ridge, angling around the little bunch so they’d drift away in the right direction. The cows never took their eyes off the rider, turning so that they were always facing him. About the time he got within a hundred yards of the cows and calves, the three mamas tossed their heads and started towards him. It was almost as if someone had hollered, “Attack”. There was no pawin’ the ground or shakin’ their horns like most cattle do before they charge. These ol’ gals just left their ground at a run and were comin’ right at him. And, they damn sure looked as if they meant business. Right about then, Freddie figured that he was outnumbered. He might have taken his chances with one... but three. No way. Besides, even if he got one roped and tied her down, what was he gonna’ do with her even if the other two pulled out? Right then, the man decided that descresion was the better part of valor. He hung the spurs to Clyde and headed across the valley at a gallop towards a hill. The cows just kept a’ coming and it sure looked to him as if they were gaining. The bay horse must have sensed the danger ‘cause he was runnin’ flat out, jumping rocks, prickly pear and crashing through cholla cactus as if the obstacles weren’t there. The pair crested the ridge and dropped off the side towards another little valley. The cows were still in hot pursuit. About the time Clyde got to the flat, Freddie looked at the ground. the ground was honeycombed with holes. “All I could think of was Clyde was gonna’ stick a foot in one of those holes and go down,” remembers the man. “An’, there I’d be with three mad cows workin’ us over, a crippled horse and no where to run. I just gave him his head and prayed.” Somehow, the horse got through the trap without an accident, crossed the valley at high speed and charged up the hill on the other side. Looking back, Freddie saw that the stampede behind him had come to a halt so he pulled his puffing horse up. The cows were just standing there, shaking their horns and daring him to come back. As far as he was concerned, those damned ol’ sookies could stay right where they were until they died. He wasn’t going back after them unless he had a highpowered rifle and lots of ammunition. From his high point, he could look over at another hill about a half-mile away. There was his traveling partner, sitting on his black horse and laughing. The man had seen the whole show and hadn’t made a move to come help him. Figuring that he needed to say something, Freddie made a long circle around the cattle and rode up next to the smiling man. “What the hell were you doin’ just sittin’ here? I could have been hurt bad if my horse went down an’ those cows got us. The least you could have done is come spook the bunch off of me,” was Fred’s hot greeting. The man grinned, “I saw ‘em before you did and tried to move ’em. They ran me up here and I thought the best thing was to leave them alone. I saw you comin’ over the ridge hell bent for election and figured you found ‘em too. I decided to stay and watch the race.”
