Denver and the National Western Stock Show Synonymous and Iconic Recently, industry media was abuzz with news that the PRCA is considering moving the National Finals Rodeo to Orlando, Florida. Decisions to move iconic events from one end of the country to another can’t help but create controversy. The National Finals, much like the National Western Stock Show, are steeped in agricultural as well as family history. The first NWSS was held one hundred eight years ago in 1906. The show ran for only six days and the grand champion steer sold for 33 cents a pound, almost three times the market price for the day. If you drove up in your automobile, you were a sitting duck for laughter and ridicule! Fast forward to 2014, events on “The Hill” typically appeal to registered breeders while the hundreds of bulls on display in “The Yards” will be examined by thousands of commercial beef producers. The 2014 NWSS runs 15 days, features 23 PRCA rodeo performances, features more than 10,000 head of livestock and is in the spotlight for the entire Denver metroplex for the duration. The 2014 NWSS will host nearly three-quarters of a million visitors from every state and many foreign countries. Reading the history of these iconic events simply doesn’t do justice to the historical importance, shared longevity and original strategy. Prior to 1906, western U.S. beef producers were at a marketing disadvantage for their
Denver is no longer the epicenter for the western packing business and vertical coordination has changed the commercial marketing landscape. However, a couple of important points need to be made relative to the stock show’s impact today. The city of Denver is no less invested in the success of the NWSS than it was 108 years ago. Not every American home had a telephone in 1906. Local news was old news by the time it reached rural homes. This year, the NWSS will be broadcast in real time and many will watch on their smartphones or tablets. If you are unable to attend an auction, not to worry, you can sit in your easy chair and watch the auction and bid on any animal in any sale. The auctioneer knows who you are! Any cattleman with a history of attending NWSS will likely describe this iconic event as an industry bellwether. Good cattlemen trek to Denver each year to see great cattle and have face-to-face conversations with producers. Communication and media methods are as technologically different today as Fred Flintstone was to George Jetson. Yet, the importance of the National Western Stock Show is exponentially more relevant today than it was 108 years ago. In the age of communication invisibility, such as text messaging or e-mail, having a face-to-face opportunity to personally visit with a producer
“In the age of communication invisibility, such as text messaging or e-mail, having a face-to-face opportunity to personally visit with a producer about breeding philosophy, genetics, nutrition and data is priceless.” cattle. Cattlemen had to ship cattle from the West to Kansas City or Chicago to market. The Denver meat packing business was small compared to the more competitive Kansas City or Chicago markets. “Necessity is the mother of invention” no doubt applied to the overarching strategy for those men originally challenged to create what we now know as the National Western Stock Show. Denver needed to do something to establish a western livestock market. A few city fathers and local cattlemen recognized the importance and a synergy was born that has lasted more than a century. Unfortunately, after 100 years, much of the history and original strategy gets lost in translation. For events such as the NWSS or the NFR, on the surface, whether an event stays or goes comes down to money. Four generations removed from “why” the National Western was created may not have the same resonance today as travel convenience, other entertainment attractions, weather, etc. The economic impact to Denver is estimated to be in the neighborhood of $100 million. The 2013 NWSS awarded 75 agriculture related scholarships and raised $613,000 at the junior livestock auction. Twenty-five auction sales grossed more than $5.6 million. Ten of the 25 auctions were national sales for their respective breeds.
about breeding philosophy, genetics, nutrition and data is priceless. Ongoing competition to move such an historic and successful event to another city, using the attraction of “Lottery Jackpot” sums of money, is inevitable. You can move the event. You can likely move many of the people that attended for generations. But, you can’t move history. Charolais will be well represented during the National Western. The 2014 NWSS marks the 45th National Charolais Show and the 35th National Charolais Sale. Charolais producers have entered 21 pens, including bulls and females. The competitive pen and carload shows will begin promptly at 9:00 AM, Saturday, January 18th. Sunday, January 19th, 85 heifers will compete in the Junior Show on The Hill. The National Charolais Sale will feature 27 lots of the Charolais breed’s most powerful genetics. The sale will begin at 2:30 PM, Sunday afternoon. Two hundred fifty four entries will compete in the 45th National Show, Monday, January 20th at 8:00 AM sharp. Refer to page 48 for a complete NWSS Schedule of events Be sure to stop by the AICA hospitality tent where the coffee pot is always on. The NWSS is a perfect opportunity to start out the New Year by reconnecting with old friends and customers as well as promoting your brand to a positive and educated audience. We hope to see you there!

45th National Show and Events at the National Western Stock Show
AmericanInternational Charolais Association The AICA is the official registry for Charolais and Charbray cattle in the United States. Charolais cattle were first brought to the U.S. in 1936. In 1957, the American Charolais Breeders Association and the International Charolais Breeders Association merged forming the present AICA. Membership in the AICA is obtainable when the applicant has ownership in at least one animal, and has paid the initial membership fee of $125. AICA annual dues are $100.
The 45th National Charolais Show will be held at the National Western, Saturday, January 18 through Monday, January 20. A full schedule of events is on page 48. Plan to visit the AICA Hospitality Tent in the Yards! Dues Reminder
2014 dues are now due— $100 active member, $25 junior. Online passwords will not work until 2014 dues are paid. Female Inventories in the Mail
All active and junior members will receive their 2014 Female Inventory in the mail in the month of January. As in years past, there are 3 different performance programs to enroll females in. The WHR program is $14 per female and includes a free registration and transfer on the calf born in 2014. EPDs are available on unregistered calves. In the PPR program, females are enrolled at no charge, fees are paid on the calves as they are registered and transferred depending on age. EPDs are not available on unregistered calves. For these programs, enrollment forms must be submitted by April 1st to avoid additional fees. The third program, Registration Only, is for members that want only a registration paper. Performance data will not be entered and EPDs will print on your papers only if they are available. Spring Sire Summary Available
2014 Spring Sire Summary is available online at www.charolaisusa.com Find a link on the homepage and more information under the “Performance” tab. 18

Catalog Information Deadline: February 25, 2014 Dave White & John Ludwig would like to invite all Ohio and surrounding state Charolais breeders that are interested in starting this sale to consign. The sale will be held April 12, 2014, in the Muskingum Livestock Sale Barn, Zanesville, Ohio. These two breeders will anchor this offering with 25 to 30 lots and will vary their numbers depending upon the response from other breeders that wish to consign. They have visited with many breeders throughout this area that have expressed an interest in having a sale of this nature. We would encourage breeders to consign lots consisting of mostly spring cow/calf pairs ready to breed, fall cow/calf splits and fall calving bred heifers. There is some interest in selling a few breeding age bulls and we could use some open yearling heifers ready to breed this summer. We plan on keeping the sale commission between 10 to 12%.

GENETIC Robert Williams,
Director of Breed Improvement Director of Foreign Marketing
Complete and Accurate Data Incorporating Genomics Expected Progeny Differences (EPD) are meant to be a reflection of the performance of the cattle and more precisely an indication of their genetic transmitting ability to the next generation for that trait. They are a reflection of the data reported Improved accuracy is dependent on the efforts of producers submitting complete performance data for all calves born, regardless if they plan to register the calf or not. In fact, the performance information on those calves culled from the herd for poor performance is every bit as important as the data for the better quality calves. This is because we can do a better job of identifying the genetic differences between those calves, the sires and the cows which make up the herd when all data is reported. The more complete and accurate the data regarding all calves reported along with accurate pasture and management codes the more accurate the genetic evaluation. The genetic evaluation further relies on the fact that differences between animals when given the same opportunity to perform are heritable and a portion of that difference will be transmitted to progeny. To further improve accuracy of our genetic evaluations AICA is moving to incorporate genomics. Ongoing research has shown this to be a useful tool to improve accuracy at an earlier age for animals in the population. Again however, the accuracy of genomically enhanced EPD is reliant on the accuracy of the phenotypic data (birth weights, weaning weights, etc.) reported by breeders just as it always has been. Genomics is an enhancement, not a replacement for our current genetic evaluation procedures. Current methodology and genetic evaluations have been validated and confirmed by researchers and producers alike domestically and internationally across multiple species of livestock for 30 or more years. Large breeding companies across species invest hundreds of thousands of dollars in genetic evaluations, and some of the larger ones more! They have withstood the test of time, with proper use they can and will contribute to improvements in beef cattle genetics.
2 Solid Breeding Programs Happy New Year! Building
This new year we anxiously await the LT Blue Value calf of WIA Ms Cash Lady Pld, a fantastic daughter of LT Blue Ballerina 9405 Pld, that Brian and Patrick own together. As you can see from her yearling photo, Cash Lady combines an abundance of depth and thickness in a feminine package. Cash Lady offers outstanding EPDs: .01 27 47 12. We feel that by combining these superior growth genetics with the strong LT Blue Value maternal line that the calf Cash Lady is carrying will be nothing short of perfection. Rathmourne Charolais has a tremendous 2013 LT Ledger bull calf in the Michigan State University/Michigan Cattleman’s Association bull test. This bull will sell in March. Contact Brian for more information. White Charolais topped the Charolais portion of this same sale last year with an outstanding high-gaining Ledger son. White Charolais has a May 2013 smooth-polled LT Unlimited Duke 1172 for sale out of a strong-milking LT Blend daughter. This calf has an impressive weaning weight and tremendous EPDs. Contact us for more information on this calf and on our 2013 LT Unlimited Duke 1172 daughters. 2014 promises to be a wonderful year both for new calves and potential dynamic new matings. Don’t forget to order your LT Gold Blend semen for the 2014 Spring breeding season. For semen, call Brian, Pat or Ryan Honeyman.

Hello all!
My name is Haley Stalcup and I am currently serving as the Area 2 Director, as well as, Vice President on the AIJCA Board. I am from Prescott, Iowa and attend college as a junior at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa majoring in Animal Science. What is potential? When looking up this word in the dictionary, it states: “Having or showing the capacity to become or develop into something in the future.” It all starts from a very young age, even though I bet you didn’t think about it. However, when you were 5 and wanted to be a teacher, astronaut, farmer, or policeman, you were creating potential for yourself to become what you wanted as your future career. Even though, at the time, it was very minor. For example, you might have been playing cops and robbers with your friends, “practicing up” for when you were old enough to actually go to school to become a policeman. You were creating potential at your own level. Each one of you has talents and interests that translate into passions that fuel forward the motion of your potential!
them on our industry and why we do the things we do. Tell them what you know about our industry! Share what your lifestyle is like and how you are passionate about raising livestock. Most likely, they’re going to have questions. If you don’t know something, tell them you don’t know; but don’t leave it at that, tell them that you will find out and get back to them. Don’t be afraid to share your contact information, or point them towards a reliable site, www. charolaisusa.com or www.beef.org that can answer their questions and give them more information. As long as you follow these rules, you have used your potential and made a positive connection with another about our industry! Another key point that I got from our risk communication lecture is that it is not what you tell your audience, but rather what they hear. Believe it or not, but in individual conversations, the average person will retain or hear about 3 seconds (or 9 words) for each key point you make. They will also only take away about 9 seconds or less of what they hear (or 27 words) of your
“Share what your lifestyle is like and how you are passionate about raising livestock.” In my Livestock Disease Prevention class, we recently had a lecture on risk communication and how to empower your audience; no matter who they may be. Our professor stressed that speaking to audiences about our industry is all about knowledge, skills and attitudes in order to empower your audience. You, as a livestock breeder, showman and representative, have a one up! You are part of a huge industry that helps feed the world! As the years have progressed, I bet you have noticed some major changes in the agricultural community. Examples are prices, rules for antibiotics, feeding strategies, etc. You, though you may only be one individual in the industry, have potential to make an impact! You can spread the word about how great our industry really is. It’s not about sticking to your own beliefs and changing others’ opinions. It’s about educating others about our industry, whether they have the same outlook on our industry as you or not. Even though we eat beef and other sources of meat, we have the potential to have a conversation with say, a vegetarian, and be able to educate 32

key message. This means we need to stick to the basics and the facts, using between 6-8th grade readability! My challenge to you is to use your potential in order to make an impact in our industry by talking to at least one person per day about our industry. Use your experiences and outings to your advantage. If you attend a stock show in another state or major city, use this to talk to someone say, on the elevator at your hotel. Tell them why you’re in town and explain to them what the purpose of the stock show is. Tell them all about how you raise cattle. It doesn’t have to be a thirty-minute conversation to make a difference. Even a two-minute elevator ride can spark a new conversation with someone not familiar with our industry! Take the challenge, and see where it brings you!

HF Ms Hi Def YM7551 (typical daughter) Sold in the 2013 Sale of Excellence for $5300
Selling Semen Packs in one of the most dynamic sons of the legendary LHD Cigar E46! Each Semen Pack will include 50 units of semen and up to 50 free signings, if needed. (Signings cannot be transferred). This is a one-time only event and will be limited to this sale. You must purchase during the sale or notify sale manager before the sale. The selling price is $1,500, a very moderate price for the quality and opportunity. His daughters have greatly impressed the Charolais breed and have sold extremely well, most in the $3,000 and up range. They are thick, easy fleshing, very correct, and massive in overall conformation. The bull calves are equally impressive. Hi Def’s dam was sired by the former Milk Trait Leader, Smooth Deal RC 9144. Smooth Deal daughters have always been in strong demand at DeBruyckers with extremely correct and powerful udder development, strong maternal ability, good size and performance. Semen is available and you can start the 2014 year with a strong commitment to raising the quality and productivity level of your herd! Buyers may take more than one pack.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION LONGRANGE® (eprinomectin) should be given only by subcutaneous injection in front of the shoulder at the recommended dosage level of 1 mg eprinomectin per kg body weight (1 mL per 110 lb body weight). WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS Withdrawal Periods and Residue Warnings Animals intended for human consumption must not be slaughtered within 48 days of the last treatment. This drug product is not approved for use in female dairy cattle 20 months of age or older, including dry dairy cows. Use in these cattle may cause drug residues in milk and/or in calves born to these cows. A withdrawal period has not been established for pre-ruminating calves. Do not use in calves to be processed for veal. Animal Safety Warnings and Precautions The product is likely to cause tissue damage at the site of injection, including possible granulomas and necrosis. These reactions have disappeared without treatment. Local tissue reaction may result in trim loss of edible tissue at slaughter. Observe cattle for injection site reactions. If injection site reactions are suspected, consult your veterinarian. This product is not for intravenous or intramuscular use. Protect product from light. LONGRANGE® (eprinomectin) has been developed specifically for use in cattle only. This product should not be used in other animal species. When to Treat Cattle with Grubs LONGRANGE effectively controls all stages of cattle grubs. However, proper timing of treatment is important. For the most effective results, cattle should be treated as soon as possible after the end of the heel fly (warble fly) season. Environmental Hazards Not for use in cattle managed in feedlots or under intensive rotational grazing because the environmental impact has not been evaluated for these scenarios. Other Warnings: Underdosing and/or subtherapeutic concentrations of extended-release anthelmintic products may encourage the development of parasite resistance. It is recommended that parasite resistance be monitored following the use of any anthelmintic with the use of a fecal egg count reduction test program. TARGET ANIMAL SAFETY Clinical studies have demonstrated the wide margin of safety of LONGRANGE® (eprinomectin). Overdosing at 3 to 5 times the recommended dose resulted in a statistically significant reduction in average weight gain when compared to the group tested at label dose. Treatment-related lesions observed in most cattle administered the product included swelling, hyperemia, or necrosis in the subcutaneous tissue of the skin. The administration of LONGRANGE at 3 times the recommended therapeutic dose had no adverse reproductive effects on beef cows at all stages of breeding or pregnancy or on their calves. Not for use in bulls, as reproductive safety testing has not been conducted in males intended for breeding or actively breeding. Not for use in calves less than 3 months of age because safety testing has not been conducted in calves less than 3 months of age. STORAGE Store at 77° F (25° C) with excursions between 59° and 86° F (15° and 30° C). Protect from light. Made in Canada. Fresh Cutting of Teff

By Linda Eck
Looking for ways to step-up high quality hay, silage and pasture production
when traditional forages fail; ranchers across the United States have found good results with an alternative forage native to Ethiopia. Quickly finding its way into hay fields and pastures across the country and helping to fill the void when conditions for traditional forages leave them lacking, “Teff” is becoming the buzz word among those seeking low input and high performance in a short growing season. “When you think something is too good to be true, it probably is,” says Mike Jedlicka, “but Teff’s amazing.” He and his brother Dale sowed Teff for the first time in 2013 on their J & S Ranch in Koshkonong, Mo. and will be expanding their use of the warm season grass in 2014. “Everything we heard about Teff, just sounded too good to be true, but six weeks to the day from planting, we harvested 3,480 pounds/acre with a little bit of fertilizer and lime.” “It’s Bermuda grass that makes tonnage,” said Dale Jedlicka of the tall, leafy, warm season grass. Well adapted to handle diverse soil conditions, Teff has been used successfully in drought conditions and in areas where excessive water is a problem. However, one thing the fine-stemmed grass doesn’t handle well is cold temperatures. True to its status as a warm season annual, Teff doesn’t establish well in soil temperatures below 65 degrees F and early planting has been reported to reduce its competitive ability. But, when planted in a warm, firm seedbed, this hardy grass emerges quickly and grows at a fast pace to provide forage that is very palatable and high in protein. At J & S, the Jedlickas trialed the grass in three separate fields totaling 30 acres. They opted to mix the tiny seeds at a rate of 10 pounds to the acre with 150 pounds of pelletized lime and 100 pounds of fertilizer for a mix

2014
they could broadcast with fertilizer trucks. Their first seeding was over a dwindling alfalfa field. They had drilled the 14-acre field with wheat in the fall and after cutting the wheat in May, spread the Teff, lime and fertilizer mix into the stubble and then rolled it in. The final two eight-acre “patches” were plowed, disked smooth and then rolled to create a firm seedbed before being broadcast and rolled again. “This took the competition out,” said Mike. “The stand was cleaner, there no weeds.” As for the post-alfalfa field, “I think this year we’ll spray,” added Mike. With a little experience and the proverbial 20/20 hindsight in his favor, Jedlicka noted the importance of keeping down the competition especially for the first cutting. While the second cutting of this field did just as good as those that were plowed, the fields with no competition were two weeks ahead. With their first cutting coming at the end of June, Mike said that because of excessive rain in July they weren’t able to get to most of their second cutting until it was 90% mature. Even at that maturity, the hay tested 13.8 percent crude protein and had a TDN of 91percent. “We cut one little field early, just 20-24 days after the first cutting,” said Dale, who noted that although it didn’t make many bales it tested 20-22 percent crude protein. “We put it in a corner of the barn and it goes straight to the show calves, they’ll lick it off the ground.” “Seed quality and depth is extremely important,” said Mike, adding that the tiny seeds just need to be “dusted” in and the lime and fertilizer, in addition to providing nutrient values, serve as carriers in the seeding process. Recommended seeding depth is one-eighth to one-quarter inch into a very firm seed bed with good seed to soil contact required. Classified as a C4 plant, intermediate between tropical and temperate
CHAROLAIS JOURNAL
grasses, Teff thrives in 12-hour days and plant height at maturity ranges from 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 feet. According to Dr. Don Miller, a Teff breeder and researcher with CalWest Seeds, Teff, along with other C4 species such as maize, sorghum and millet has the advantage of a photosynthetic pathway that results in efficient use of water and the ability to photosynthesize faster than wheat and cool season grasses under high heat and light. Since its introduction into the United States, Teff’s performance in trials across the country has indicated a wide range of adaptation. In its “test year” at J & S, Mike noted that one of their successful eightacre fields “has always been a problem field, it’s just not that good of ground, but with Teff it made more tons than with anything else we’ve tried.” Aside from its adaptability, one of the Jedlickas’ favorite attributes of the grass is its low requirement for fertilizer. Noted by researchers as a “low input crop” requiring minimal fertilization, the total seasonal nitrogen needs of Teff are low, generally ranging from 50 to 90 pounds of available nitrogen. Specialists also note that excessive single applications above 100 pounds may result in lodging and recommend split applications of 30 to 50 pounds following each cutting. The Jedlickas applied 24-25 units of nitrogen after each cutting. Specialists do note that moderate amounts of phosphorous and in some cases, sulfur, may be required.
Teff is also one of the only annual forage crops suitable for making dry bales rather than silage, again resulting in high quality forage with less input. Noted by researchers for having quality similar to timothy, Mike says Teff is “awesome horse hay.” He also said their cows prefer Teff over alfalfa. Research shows the protein content of Teff hay ranging from 12 to 17 percent depending on its stage of maturity. Teff also has higher ratings in several key forage quality factors when compared to other summer annual forage crops. Harvested at optimal maturity, the Relative Feed Value (RFV) has been reported to be as much as 15 percent greater; while pounds of milk produced per acre have shown to be eight percent greater; pounds of milk produced per ton of hay, seven percent greater, and crude protein, as much as nine percent greater. Independent studies have also shown cattle gaining in the range of one pound per head per day over fescue/clover mix pastures. “We were skeptical going into it,” said Mike, but even at its worst, it’s still better than fescue.” Additional information regarding Teff grass may be found at www.teffgrass.com
Quick Facts about Teff • For best establishment results, soil temperature should be at least 65
28 days of growth—Mike Jedlicka and Dale’s son, Cody, demonstrate the height of Teff grass after 28 days.
degrees F and warming. • Planting Teff in a firm seed bed helps with seed placement and keeps seeds from being buried in loose soil. • Seeding depth is very important and should be no greater than ¼-inch with good seed to soil contact. • Split applications of Nitrogen (30-50 lbs. recommended) after each cutting enhance production. • Teff seed is tiny with an average of 1.3 million seeds per raw pound. • Recommended seeding rate is 5 to 7 pounds/acre for raw seed or 8 to 10 pounds/acre for coated seed. • For best results select a forage variety and use coated seed. • Early research in the U.S. indicates Teff requires less irrigation than alfalfa for comparable yields. • Teff is known to grow well in a variety of soil types. •Teff is a bunch grass with shallow root development, but may be grazed successfully by cattle, horses and sheep after the root system is developed. • Optimum cutting/grazing height is 4 inches to stimulate quick regrowth. • Harvest in early boot stage for best forage quality. • Nutritional value of Teff is comparable to timothy making it an excellent forage choice for horses, cattle and sheep.

Data from the Spring 2012 Across-Breed EPD Genetic Trends presented at the Beef Improvement Federation documents Charolais and Charolais-influenced genetics lead all major breeds compared for both weaning and yearling weights. AICA MEMBERSHIP Obituary
George Ellis Brown, 83, of Cody, Wyoming, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Nov. 16, 2013, at Spirit Mountain Hospice House. He was born March 3, 1930, in Merrill, Ore., to Matt and Margaret Brown as the second youngest of seven children. As a child George spent summer vacations on his grandmothers’ ranch on Owl Creek near Thermopolis, Wyo. Wanting to be a “real Wyoming cowboy” and after the death of his father, he moved to the ranch at the age of 8. He graduated from Thermopolis High
School in 1948 and married Donna Lee Anthony on Dec. 27, 1951; they had three children. He and Donna bought a family ranch on Owl Creek from his aunt and lived there until moving to the Hoodoo Ranch as its manager in January 1967, a position he held for 43 years until retiring in 2010. George was well-known and respected in the cattle industry and was on the Board of Directors of several organizations including the Buffalo Bill Historical Center and Shoshone National Bank. George is survived by his wife, Donna; son, CHAROLAIS JOURNAL
Don (Linda) Brown of Las Vegas, Nev.; daughters, Mamie (Jim) Knadler of Laramie, Wyo., and Mary (Marvin) Haugen of Gillette, Wyo. Grandchildren are Mark (Shelley) Musser, Rhys (Kitt) Haugen, Michael Haugen, Blake (Amanda) Knadler, Afton Brown and Tony Brown. Great-Grandchildren are Forrest, Tyler, Carson and Jacob. Sisters, Jean Burtis and Mary of Portland, Ore., and numerous nieces and nephews survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and three sisters. JANUARY
