VIEWPOINT

CHAROLAIS Supply & Demand!

The Foundation for A Rock-Solid Relationship

I

t’s hard to imagine a beef industry scenario that is not based on a fundamental supply and demand relationship. While the different sectors involved are rarely in agreement, the broad spectrum of the industry agrees that the basic “laws” of supply and demand have served us all well over the history of beef production. A theoretical definition of the law of supply and demand is relatively simple. However, the equitable implementation of this economic principal in an industry as complex as meat protein production is about as complicated as it can get. Prior to the early 1990s, production sectors were completely disconnected from processing sectors, thus, a chasm as wide as a Grand Canyon existed between a cow-calf producer anywhere in the

level and shrinking consumer confidence. Possibly the tectonic shift that began because of the study was the shocking revelations of deficiencies in health, feedlot performance, carcass condemnations and financial losses due to bruising, injection site and hot iron brand blemishes. The bad news-good news was all these issues could be fixed by producers and would likely have been minimized by simply having the correct information. It’s been 28 years since the initial SAFS was released. Beef production and processing bear little resemblance to production prior to 1993. Producers and cattle feeders largely embraced the challenges to make cattle moving into the supply chain healthier. Vaccination protocols were changed to reduce carcass value losses.

The demand for Charolais and Charolais influence throughout the supply chain is more aggressive today than ever. Registered and commercial producers have access to information and technology to make live cattle healthier, more efficient, and more profitable. country and a single mom in any inner city. Then, the demand for beef began to decline, yet the supply continued resulting in more beef than we could sell. That’s how supply and demand works, or, in the case of beef production, it wasn’t working. Once the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) Strategic Alliance Field Study (SAFS) was released, we slowly began to recognize the pitfalls of supply and demand economics unless information is consistently shared with every industry stakeholder. Consumers were moving away from beef and research data indicated the demand decline was due to an inferior product. The family shopper told us the product was too fat. Food service and restaurant professionals told us beef quality was too inconsistent. The study told us just about everyone involved, from calf to carcass, was losing money. The SAFS was released in 1993. The study revealed significant production and processing problems that, at the time, had very few solutions. Expected progeny differences (EPDs) had been implemented in all major beef breed associations but were not entirely embraced by seedstock producers. Seedstock or commercial producers, regardless of breed or breed influence, did not have information from the end of the supply chain, nor did they have access to science and technology to begin to make genetic improvements. Information streams were considered proprietary and individual carcass data collection was rare and expensive. The study documented serious problems with beef at the retail

Academia, industry thought leaders and stakeholders began massive collaboration and research efforts that resulted in science and technology tools we use to make genetic progress. The SAFS was the first documented study that looked at every production sector as well as illustrated our relationship with consumers. The pandemic in 2020 proved that the beef industry has taken nothing for granted in the past 28 years and is acutely aware of our relationship with consumers and their relationship with beef. Processing and supply limitations created by COVID-19 and consumers’ shift to cooking at home because of quarantine did not curtail demand. In fact, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) market research report consumers spent $31.9 billion in 2020 on beef purchases, increasing the volume sales by more than 600 million pounds. Beef accounted for more than 60% of the total increased value of supermarket meat department sales. The demand for Charolais and Charolais influence throughout the supply chain is more aggressive today than ever. Registered and commercial producers have access to information and technology to make live cattle healthier, more efficient, and more profitable. Producer-packer relationships and branded beef programs more closely connect production with consumption. As a breed and as a stakeholder in a complex industry challenged to supply meat protein to a global consumer, we respect the importance of a complicated economic system that relies almost entirely on the laws of supply and demand.

PROGRESSIVE ENHANCEMENTS TO THE AICA GENETIC EVALUATION

by Dr. Sally L. Northcutt, Genetic Consultant

With the latest rollout of the AICA genetic evaluation update, breeders again have access to progressive enhancements to their genetic prediction tools. The AICA membership has historically embraced new technologies and revisions to their national cattle evaluation procedures to deliver industry relevant EPDs to seedstock and commercial cattle producers. In recent years, the use of DNA technology has grown with the implementation of single-step genetic evaluation procedures, and Charolais breeders have capitalized on this genomic application. DNA testing of registered Charolais cattle has been on a rapid increase and seamless incorporation of the genotypes has provided genomic-enhanced EPDs along with timely bi-monthly EPD updates. The latest enhancements to the July 2021 AICA genetic evaluation are two-fold. First, the genetic parameters utilized in generating EPDs are updated. Secondly, the growth and maternal predictions and TSI index are delivered on a beef cattle industry relevant base for genetic selection.

Genetic parameter revisions It is important to periodically revisit the heritability and genetic correlation estimates that are represented in a genetic evaluation. The AICA National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) was well overdue for a review of its genetic parameters, particularly for the growth traits. The latest NCE update reflects revised structure for weaning weight, yearling weight, and maternal milk trait relationships. Specific genetic parameters can be accessed at the following link: https://charolaisusa.com/genetic-evaluation.php In the past, a strong negative genetic correlation was set between weaning weight (direct genetic effects) and milk (maternal genetic). This strong correlation was commonly evident when a sire was characterized with high weaning weight potential and his maternal milk EPD would tend to be driven down numerically. This negative association between weaning weight and milk was difficult to explain in the real world, particularly where contemporary weaning weights for calves and daughters’ progeny were being aggressively submitted by breeders. The latest evaluation results reflect a zero correlation between direct weaning weight and maternal milk. Another new element to the recent EPD update is the softening of genetic relationships between birth, weaning, and postweaning gain traits. The correlation strength between birth weight and subsequent growth measures is reduced. Growth trait EPDs released under the updated genetic parameters tend to move more independently than in the past. Charolais breeders must continue to submit large contemporary groups of growth trait data to better leverage the evaluation enhancements.

20    J U N E/J U L Y 2 0 2 1

Industry relevant EPDs for Charolais cattle The correct use of EPDs is to focus on differences between animals or comparisons to breed averages, as well as the use of percentile rankings. Yet, commercial producers seeking Charolais genetics may still be influenced by the numeric presentation of selection tools. With the popularity of Charolais genetics in the commercial industry and the need to update the EPDs for industry relevance, the latest NCE update has a modern delivery of growth trait EPDs. While no changes are evident in the birth weight EPDs, the weaning weight, yearling weight, milk, and total maternal EPDs are updated. Breed averages and percentile rank tables also illustrate the new presentation of AICA selection tools. As one would expect the Terminal Sire Index (TSI) values are re-tooled with these revisions. The link for http://search.charolaisusa.com/ provides statistics for this and future NCE updates and is a good reference point for AICA evaluations.

Best use of AICA Selection Tools While the update to AICA NCE results paints a more modern characterization of Charolais cattle, it is important to remember the key basics about use of EPDs: • EPDs, or expected progeny difference, are to be used to sort out relative differences among animals. • Breed average EPDs are a key resource in understanding cattle evaluation population for animal classes such as active sires, active dams, and nonparent animals. • Percentile rank tables are an excellent resource for reviewing the distribution of various traits, rather than focusing on absolute numeric values of EPDs. The goal of these changes is to improve the genetic predictions on the growth traits in the Charolais breed. The drive by breeders to adopt technology and provide genomicenhanced EPDs in a user accepted format will continue to positively impact production systems in the beef industry.

YEAR-ROUND GRAZING EQUALS EFFICIENCY FOR CORMAN CHAROLAIS by Linda Eck

Good genetics and year-round grazing equals efficiency for Corman Charolais, where a dedicated Dan Corman focuses on utilizing forage to keep the family’s Charolais herd in top performance condition.

Over the last several years, the now retired Corman, and his wife, Connie, have developed a sophisticated intensive grazing program on the farm in Howell County, Missouri. “Fencing and watering systems allow us to run around 40 head of mature cows,” said Corman, explaining the 35 paddocks that span over 150 acres of grassland. “We are close to being in the situation of increasing the cow herd to 60 head with the forages I’ve established.” Retaining 16 heifers for replacements this year, the Corman’s are well on their way to meeting that goal.

admitting that not much of his post-college experience has been focused on engineering. But, inspired by his MU studies, learning about forages has been top priority. Corman has attended both the basic and advanced grazing schools put on by the University of Missouri Extension in conjunction with Natural Resources Conservation Service and is a regular at attending the Southwest Missouri Spring Forage Conference held each year in late February.

It All Started with Charley Litton Corman’s first memories of Charolais cattle come from a trip he took with his dad and mom, C.R. and Joanna Corman, to Chillicothe, Mo. in 1958. As a five-year-old looking on as his dad purchased a Charolais bull from Charley Litton, he was introduced to a new breed that was quickly taking the livestock industry by storm. That bull was “one of the first (Charolais) in Howell County, if not all of southern Missouri,” said Corman. Growing up he watched as his dad filled the pastures of the family farm near Pomona with genetics stemming from the fledgling Litton Charolais program. After graduating from the University of Missouri in 1975, he found his own start from within that herd. “I’ve lived in Pomona all my life, except for those four years at Mizzou,” said Corman laughingly noting that his degree was in agricultural engineering. He’s now retired after nearly 44 years of balancing a career in commercial banking with his life as a Charolais breeder.

Forages Got His Attention “When I was at the University of Missouri, forage class with Dr. Ken Larson was one of my favorites,” he noted,

Dan & Connie Corman

“I’m continually learning about forages,” said Corman. “You never have it all mastered but I’m trying.” The intensive grazing program used by the Cormans has been developed over time along with an extensive renovation of the farm to forages that can provide grazing year-round. Moving away from the “old days” when southern Missouri cattlemen relied heavily on fescue, orchard grass and lespedeza, Corman has managed to incorporate four different varieties of novel endophyte fescue. While it has taken some time and persistence, his steady practices have allowed him to replace most of the farm’s KY-31 fescue.

CHAROLAIS JOURNAL

J U N E/J U L Y 2 0 2 1    23

“On some pasture land I rent from my mom, I’m not sure I can eliminate the old fescue,” said Corman realizing additional challenges of renovating a field. “It’s pretty rocky ground and with the risk of erosion, I may not be able to renovate that.” Instead, Corman has established a lot of red clover into the old stand to “dilute” the problems associated with grazing fescue laden with the toxic endophyte fungus.

A Long and Successful Journey Jesup with MaxQ endophyte was the variety Corman started with - about 18 to 20 years ago. As he has continued the process, he’s used Bar Optima with E-34 friendly endophyte, Estancia with Arc Shield and most recently Lacefield with MaxQII.

seasons, the year-round grazing system works well and minimizes the amount of hay that needs to be harvested. Hay is required at times for bull and heifer development, grazing supplementation and is also put up for emergencies. Up until two years ago, the Cormans baled small square bales to supplement the grazing program. Now, hay is harvested in large round bales. Three hundred were baled in 2020, but, “I’d like to get to where we have 450-500 in storage for drought,” added Corman. “We’re not quite there yet.” At one time alfalfa was maintained and baled as a supplement, but “deer have destroyed the alfalfa crop,” he said, adding that 60-100 deer could be found grazing that 15-acre field. “In compliance with the Missouri Department of Conservation we try to harvest as many does as we can each year, but that doesn’t put a dent in it. Now we just focus on good quality Bermuda.” Beginning in 2017, Corman turned his attention to soil fertility, a step that he says has proven to be “very worthwhile”. “We enrolled our farm in the MFA Nutri-Track grid sampling program,” said Corman. “They do grid sampling and soil testing and we fertilize according.” Through the program, the Cormans have been able to build the Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K) fertility of their pasture land up to a level that, “we won’t have to apply any more for another four years,” said Corman. “We’ll retest at that time.” “It’s been helpful on the hay fields as well,” added Corman. “It allows us to get balanced nutrients where they’re needed.” Through all of these processes, the Cormans have freed themselves from the added expense and labor of supplemental feeding. “We don’t supplement our cow herd,” he said. “No lick tanks, tubs or extra feed, just a basic mineral.”

Other Changes Moving Toward Efficiency “Friendly endophyte fescue has allowed me to see great improvement in the production of our cows,” said Corman, noting improvements in reproduction, heat tolerance and no problems losing feet and tails. In addition to upgrading the farm’s fescue, warm season Bermuda grass has been established for hot summer grazing and haying. Twenty-two acres of Wrangler Bermuda was established about 20 years ago for grazing when fescue is struggling during hot weather. Another 30 acres of Midland 99, a hybrid Bermuda is used for hay. “Beginning August 1, we graze Bermuda pretty extensively, then we fertilize the fescue with 40-50 pounds of Nitrogen for winter stockpiling,” he added. “Because of that, the last two winters we’ve been able to strip graze the stockpiled fescue, with exception of this year’s two-week cold spell in February.” All predicated on good rainfall and favorable growing 24    J U N E/J U L Y 2 0 2 1

Once calving in both the spring and fall, the Cormans have most recently moved to a fall calving herd, all for added efficiency. Spring calving females were dispersed on Labor Day 2018 as consignments to the annual “Autumn in the Ozarks” sale held at Strafford, Mo. “I have found it helps with efficiency,” said Corman. “Before there were two sets of everything and five or six groups of cattle making it hard to do the rotational grazing.” Now, females are synchronized for artificial insemination and clean-up bulls are turned in. Yearling heifers; two- and three-year-old cows, and four-yearolds and older are kept in separate groups for a 60-day breeding season. Once the bulls are pulled, the cows are put together. “It’s working well for us,” said Corman. “Cows maintain good flesh on stockpiled fescue and they breed back. We don’t have near as many open cows.”

CHAROLAIS JOURNAL

“We’ve concentrated on developing good female genetics in our herd,” said Corman. “We’ve selected for polled, easy calving cattle with a good disposition and now we have what we feel are gentle, easy fleshing, productive cattle that calve every year.”

The Mechanics of it All The Corman grazing system is surrounded by a perimeter fence consisting of four barbed wires with a high-tensile electric wire in the middle. Paddocks are created with a single high-tensile wire. Cattle are moved over 30 paddocks, ranging in size from two to 11 acres, on a daily basis. While the average paddock size is five acres, some of the bigger paddocks are split as needed with poly wire. Poly wire and step-in posts are used for strip grazing in the winter. Five smaller bull pens are reserved for growing and developing bulls offered for sale private treaty. Proudly noting that he has kept a closed herd with replacement females raised on the farm, Corman said, “I want to grow numbers internally. I have one female I can trace back to 20 generations of our breeding. A lot of our cattle are 13-14 generations of Corman bloodlines.” He and Connie, a retired school teacher, enjoy help from their two daughters and two grandchildren. Sara is Director of Marketing for Penmac Staffing in Springfield; and Danielle, a physical therapy assistant at Cox Medical Center in Branson, is married to Josh Boehm, a Battalion Chief with Branson Fire and Rescue. “The girls help out and Josh is here once or twice a year to assist with herd work in the spring and fall,” said Corman. “The grandkids, Mallory 10, and Rief, 7, spend a week or two on the farm during the summer. We gave them each a heifer to grow out and now they’ve calved. Our numbers include theirs!”

Females are marketed through the spring “Renaissance” sale held each year in April and the “Autumn in the Ozarks” sale, both held at Strafford, Mo. Corman proudly admits he’s consigned to every one of the sales over the past 29 and 28 years, respectively essentially since the sales began. A marketing highlight was the opportunity to participate in the 2014 National Charolais sale held in Kansas City. His “pick of the herd” offering netted $8,500 along with added recognition for the Corman program. “We’ve concentrated on developing good female genetics in our herd,” said Corman. “We’ve selected for polled, easy calving cattle with a good disposition and now we have what we feel are gentle, easy fleshing, productive cattle that calve every year.” “Charolais have been good to us,” Corman added. “We’ve spent so much time developing them, I just like them. They’ve adapted well to our climate and are heat and cold tolerant.” Marketing bulls off the farm also works well for the Corman program. “Charolais bulls produce a uniform calf no matter what they’re used on and the calves grow,” said Corman. “Our buyers recognize that.” Likewise, the Cormans have realized the value of the Charolais breed to their livelihood. “We’ve stuck with Charolais through the years,” he said. “We’ve been faithful to them and we’ve been rewarded for it.”

CHAROLAIS JOURNAL

AN EDGE ON CHAROLAIS By Erin Williams

How one Mississippi family used Charolais genetics to build a quality operation If you’re looking for a quality registered Charolais operation, take a trip down to the heart of the Deep South and visit Clear Water Cattle. Clear Water Cattle, which is located in West Point, Mississippi, has built a practical and reputable Charolais herd that supplies top Charolais genetics to beef producers in commercial and seedstock operations all over the nation. Owned and managed by Jimmy Ray and Jane Parish, with the help of their children Beau and Haley, Clear Water Cattle started when Jimmy Ray and Jane first moved to Mississippi 18 years ago. “We moved to Mississippi so that I could work as a Beef Specialist at Mississippi State University (MSU),” said Jane. “A big part of my job at the time was to work with South Farm, which is the research center at MSU. We worked a lot with the Charolais herd there, and I was able to see firsthand how they performed.” According to Jane, that time led her and Jimmy Ray to realize the opportunity for growth with the Charolais breed. After evaluating many herds in the state, the Parishs found that producers of a wide range of breed types were looking for outcrosses to utilize hybrid vigor in their cattle. With the help of reputable breeders along the way, the Parishs worked to begin their Charolais herd. In 2005, they purchased their first Charolais from Pate Charolais and haven’t looked back since. “Charolais cattle are a high-growth breed; it’s one of the traits the breed excels in,” said Jimmy Ray. “Any way that you sell cattle, you are selling them based on pounds, and we saw the need for a Charolais bull market here to help commercial producers increase weaning weights and capitalize on other benefits of Charolais genetics in their herds.” Some of other benefits of Charolais genetics Jimmy Ray spoke on was the breed’s high recognizability. According to Jimmy Ray, you can spot a Charolais or Charolais-cross cow or bull anywhere you go because of the consistent hide color. This contributes to breed and branding recognizability, which can also increase Charolais breed education and marketing efforts. Another trait the Parishs believe sets the Charolais breed apart is their adaptability to extremes in weather. For 9-10 months out of the year here in Mississippi, extreme heat, humidity, and lots of mud can make for a

harsh environment to raise cattle. However, Charolais cattle thrive in these harsh climates and still manage to pack on the pounds, which in turn can help pack on the profits. “Charolais cattle do well here, and they do well in a wide range of environmental conditions – even extreme cold climates. They’re adaptable, and they can fit in well with a lot of different mating systems and crosses,” said Jimmy Ray. “They offer unique characteristics, are very

Caption

docile, and their adaptability and growth ability are hard to beat.” Clear Water’s breeding philosophy is based on balanced EPD selection with superior phenotype. They are supporters of the Beef Improvement Federation, where Jane previously served as the Executive Director, and its focus on continuous genetic improvement of beef cattle. They’ve selected cattle that have proven cow families that perform and are stacked in the pedigree. For them, it is important that their customers know they are purchasing cattle that are predictable, fit in the industry, and put pounds on the ground. Embryo transfer has once again become important to the Clear Water breeding program, and the Parishs also utilize artificial insemination in their herd. All heifers and early-calving cows are bred A.I. to bulls that are selected based on genetic and phenotype traits to improve the cowherd. Jimmy Ray does all of the A.I. work, and he has a successful conception rate of about 75%. They do one round of A.I. work and then follow up with herd clean-up

AMERICAN-INTERNATIONAL JUNIOR CHAROLAIS ASSOCIATION

Emily Hoelewyn, Secretary

VIEWPOINT

JUNIOR

Memories and Experiences to Last a Lifetime Involvement is paramount

H

i guys, my name is Emily Hoelewyn, and I had the honor of serving as your AIJCA Secretary. I am the daughter of Thomas and Leah Hoelewyn. Although originally from the small town of Damon, Texas, I currently reside in College Station, Texas. I am a senior at Texas A&M University, where I am majoring in Poultry Science and Human Resource Development. As we approach the heart of summer, I hope you are staying cool and enjoying time with family and friends, and that you had an outstanding Junior Nationals! This summer was filled with many first-time exhibitors coming to Junior National and many seniors leaving us. As we think back on this time, I catch myself reflecting on all that this exciting week of summer has brought to me over the last four years. Growing up on a small family run cattle operation, I

everything to them! By participating in Interview and Resume, Impromptu speaking, quiz bowl and many other contests, I have gained numerous experiences that I can now communicate with and to others! Good communication and people skills can open up as many doors for you as an outstanding GPA. The contests that are available throughout the week at Junior National are a great way to meet new friends and add experiences to your resume. In everything we do, communication is key. Our words have the ability to influence others in a way that you can only begin to imagine. Just as our words have the ability to influence others, our actions play just as big a part. All over the barn, there are little eyes watching you. Even when you do not see them, they are there. These young cattlemen and women are the future of our breed and the industry. We owe it to them to be the best we can be. Take them under your wing and show them all the things this association

“The Charolais Association provides many opportunities to exhibitors that will be applicable in all aspects of life. At any age, involvement is paramount. Involvement not only builds from previous experiences but helps build towards a better tomorrow.” was no stranger to the cattle industry. I started showing poultry my first year in 4-H and exhibited my first steer a few years later. However, I did not exhibit my first Charolais until 2014. My start to the Charolais breed and association is non-traditional when compared to others. I believe that is what makes each and every one of us special. The Charolais breed has played a major role in my life for the past seven years. I attended my first Junior National in Iowa back in 2018 and knew that one day I would want to run for the Junior Board. In 2019, I was elected as an At-Large Director, and last year I was elected to serve as Secretary. The last two years have been nothing short of amazing, and I could not ask for a better way to end my junior show career. The Charolais Association provides many opportunities to exhibitors that will be applicable in all aspects of life. At any age, involvement is paramount. Involvement not only builds from previous experiences but helps build towards a better tomorrow. My first Junior National I was the shy kid that did not want to participate in many contests, but my parents and a few Texas members pushed me to participate! I owe 32    J U N E/J U L Y 2 0 2 1

has to offer. Not only have I gained a multitude of experiences through AIJCA, but other organizations and opportunities as well. My advice to anyone is seize the moments in front of you. The world is yours, and opportunities are all around. I promise that by taking these opportunities that await you, you will not regret it! You take something away from every experience you receive in life. Whether it is that you have found something that you love or you have found something that is not for you. I challenge each of you to get involved, talk to a stranger and participate in one more event throughout the year! That one event could be the one that brings you a new opportunity or a new lifelong friend. No matter how you got your start within the breed, each and every one of us has a unique story to tell. From those that have generations behind them to those that are first generation Charolais breeders, each and every one of us offers an unrepeatable viewpoint. It was an honor and a privilege to serve as your Junior Board Secretary! I look forward to seeing what this year brings each and every one of you! Remember you will always have a home and friend within the association and breed. CHAROLAIS JOURNAL

Dear Cattlemen, It’s been an interesting year in all facets of the cattle business. From COVID to prices to weather, there have been many challenges to face and overcome. Fortunately, one major take away from the year is that Charolais cattle are in demand!! With each passing year more and more commercial cattlemen are realizing the value of our breed’s genetics and are utilizing them to make their operations more efficient and profitable. Looking forward, the futures markets appear promising and most of our state has received adequate moisture this spring. Hopefully these factors will ensure a successful year to come. The state of Missouri has historically been a leader in the production of Charolais genetics. On a national scale we currently rank #2 for Active Members, #5 for total Enrolled Registered Females and #6 for Junior Members. There are also 6 Missouri breeders that rank in the Top 100 for Female Enrollments. There are many opportunities throughout the year to participate in Charolais functions. Since the amount of interest for the breed within the state is extremely strong, the Missouri State Fair host the largest Junior and Open Charolais shows in the nation at the state level and the American Royal in Kansas City is annually the breed’s largest National ROE Show. During the American Royal in the fall of 2020 the Royal Breeders Bull Classic had 35 Classic Club Members that represented 11 states participating, $5,000 was awarded to the people’s choice Grand Champion Bull who was exhibited by a Missouri breeder. As well the Royal Collection Sale averaged $4,525 with buyers from 7 states. In April of 2021, MCBA hosted their Annual Membership meeting in Springfield that was very well attended and was followed by the MCBA Spring Bull and Female Sale that averaged $3,106. If you would like to participate in either of these future sales please contact Wes Chism, with JWC Marketing. As you study the pages of this directory you will notice the large amount of quality cattle that are produced here. MCBA members hosted many successful sales on farm and online in 2020-2021, in fact three of the breed’s Top 10 Female Sales in 2020 were held in Missouri. Feel free to contact any Missouri Charolais breeder to discuss their operations and how you can acquire these breed leading genetics! Sincerely, Chris Peuster MCBA President

Calf scours are not inevitable. A strong prevention program is non-negotiable. Dependable scour prevention is essential for calf welfare, employee morale and business profitability. The immune system’s response to vaccination is variable and unpredictable. That’s why giving preformed antibodies instead of relying on a vaccine to stimulate antibody production is so important. I’m all for removing uncertainties. So yes, I stand by this product. (And no, I’m not.)

ZEHNDER-WAAGE PARTNERSHIP

Zehnder Cattle and Waage Farms exist separately and successfully roughly 300 miles apart in Minnesota.

By Amy Blum

Yet, thanks to years of a professional relationship that grew to a friendship, parts of each business were blended to form the Zehnder-Waage Partnership in 2016.

Paragraphs can be written about the partnership’s genetic program, sale success, and competitive edge. To focus there first, however, would be to overlook the partnership’s core … its people.

Before the Blend Brothers Ryan and Ross Waage, along with their cousin Todd, own and operate Waage Farms near Greenbush, Minnesota, not far from the Canadian border. Their diversified farming/ranching business includes grain production and a feedyard with appreciation for finishing Charolais calves. Ryan and his wife Robin have three children. Ross and his wife Madeline have two daughters. The families came to know Chad Zehnder as their feedyard nutritionist. In addition to his 19-year career with Purina, Zehnder is a second generation Charolais breeder. He and wife Cameo have two daughters who have been active in both the Charolais and Red Angus breeds on local, regional, and national levels. Together, they operate Zehnder Cattle near Stanchfield, Minnesota. As Ryan and Ross worked with Chad more, their children also began showing interest in showing cattle. When it came time to purchase a show heifer, Ryan called Chad. The Charolais show heifer led to Waages purchasing half interest in a Charolais donor cow. Those early interactions grew a friendship and helped the families realize the real opportunity for each of them lived in a formal partnership. According to Zehnder, the partnership works because the important parts are well-aligned. “It took us over a year to formalize the partnership because we wanted to get the details right, but the foundation was well set in the fact that we all share a common belief in work ethic, trust, and respect,” he says. “Then, we knew sitting down, talking through ideas, and formalizing a plan with goals was critical to finding success.”

Building a Vision Zehnder and the Waages knew they were better together when it came to reaching seedstock goals, but that didn’t mean the process was easy. Waages came to the table with zero seedstock experience, which was different than many partnership ventures. In the end, the vastly different perspectives of the beef industry prove to be one of the partnership’s greatest strengths.

While about 300 miles separate their physical locations, the Zehnder-Waage Partnership comes together well and often to keep moving toward success. The partnership’s first national exhibit offering is shown here at the Charolais pen show at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado. “We challenge each other, which leads to thinking outside the box, but we also question and challenge respectfully. I think that makes our partnership as unique as it is successful,” Zehnder says. Artificial insemination is a prime example of the partners viewing different sides of the same apple. “As a seedstock producer, I didn’t question utilizing artificial insemination for herd development; it’s just what we do,” Zehnder says. “Ross and Ryan let me lead

because they didn’t have experience with AI, but as they learned, they questioned the process because they noticed the bulls we were selling from our home-raised herd sires sold for as much or more than those from AI sires.” Zehnder continues, “Their perspective made me pause and remember the importance of trusting our genetics, trusting what we’re building. Having that conversation led to about half our cow herd getting turned with herd bulls while we use AI on the rest to meet other goals within our program.” Respect for each other, a shared vision, and knowledge of their customer base led the partnership to develop the tag line, “Industry focused. Customer driven.” According to Zehnder, those two short statements sum up their business in straight forward fashion. “Some of the cattle business’s most challenging parts are two things we can’t control—markets and weather—so, we are committed to what we can control and that’s our level of customer service. We truly want to be involved with and available to our customers,” Zehnder says.

Living the Motto The partners’ vast experiences within the beef industry present Zehnder-Waage customers a unique opportunity. Whether providing help from a genetic, nutrition, or marketing standpoint, Z-W customers have come to know the partnership extends a relationship beyond the sale. “We see the heterosis a Charolais bull brings to a predominantly Angus-based cow herd as a tremendous opportunity,” shares Zehnder. He continues, “Within our program, we’re focused on genetics that will perform for our commercial customers and excel in the feedyard, and we hope the additional services and perspectives we can share with our customers make a difference to their businesses while positively influencing the industry.” While the partnership grew rapidly in its first five years thanks to a strong focus on cattle purchases, growth in the coming years doesn’t mean only numbers. Instead, Zehnder-Waage is committed to improving herd genetics and services offered to customers, then growing the number of animals offered for sale because of it. “We strive to utilize tools and technologies like genomic testing to make genetic improvements while not forgetting important convenience traits like foot quality, temperament, and structure. We’re building data 76    J U N E/J U L Y 2 0 2 1

Customers of the Zehnder-Waage partnership not only have access to insight from Chad Zehnder’s nearly 20 years as an animal nutritionist with Purina but also benefit from access to the Waage Farms feedyard. Helping customers market their calves—be it through the Waage feedyard or other means—is a unique feature offered by Zehnder-Waage Partnership with locations in both Greenbush and Stanchfield, Minnesota. and learning in order to make informed decisions with our customers in mind. I think we’re on the right track,” Zehnder says.

Going the Distance While some folks can’t imagine physically partnering cattle on ranches over 300 miles apart, the ZehnderWaage crew has trouble picturing it any other way. “What we do works well for us because it makes sense given the strengths we each bring to the table,” Zehnder says. Zehnder and herd manager Joe Rupp handle all the calving, embryo work, and any show cattle in Stanchfield. Waages develop all the sale bulls and replacement heifers up north. The partners split the herd half and half for summer pasture and work together with their families to host a bull sale in Greenbush each March. They also offer females through online sales in the fall. “Not every partnership is going to work. We’ve all seen that happen before, but whether it’s a business in town or a ranch business, partnerships that bring the right people with multiple talents together for realistic goals in a respectful and candid environment will succeed,” Zehnder says.

An Edge on Charolais continued from page 31

“It’s such a joy for us to see the kids on the farm and in the show ring. They are really able to really help us in the day-to-day responsibilities,” said Jane. bulls. Their cattle are grazed on bahiagrass, dallisgrass and bermudagrass during the summer months. They also utilize MaxQ tall fescue and Durana white clover for the winter months, as well as annual ryegrass through controlled grazing. During the winter, cattle limit graze stockpiled tall fescue and annual ryegrass and are supplemented with hay. Free choice minerals are available year-round. Currently, Clear Water has a 90% fall calving herd, with about 10% calving in the spring so their kids can utilize them as show calves and provide a small show calf market; however, they hope to one day return to 100% fall calving. Predominant fall calving was a management decision based on weather conditions and timely marketing of bulls. “Time management is a big factor with both Jane and I working full-time, raising kids, and now spending a large part of our time helping them with their show animals,” said Jimmy Ray. “Because of the size of our herd and the uniform breeding and calving windows we have, it’s much more manageable in the busy days.” Speaking of their kids, both Beau (12) and Haley (10) are incredibly active on the farm. In fact, according to Jane, they’ve been in the pastures, cow pens, and on the sideby-sides helping since they were very young. It’s another type of investment that has provided a large return. In addition to their help on the farm, both Beau and Haley have been very successful in the show ring. Though their awards are many, some of the top include exhibiting the Grand and Reserve Charolais Heifer at the Mississippi State Fair and Dixie National Junior Livestock Show for the past three years in a row. “It’s such a joy for us to see the kids on the farm and in the show ring. They are really able to really help us in 82    J U N E/J U L Y 2 0 2 1

the day-to-day responsibilities,” said Jane. “They can do a lot of what we do out on the farm by themselves, and what they can’t do yet they are learning to do. The lessons they’ve learned have been invaluable, both on our farm and in the work they’ve done in the barn for the show ring.” Today, though they’re continuing to focus on quality in all aspects of their operation - both in building up the quality of the land that they will leave behind to the next generation and the quality of the cattle they are breeding – the Parishs have enjoyed all the involvement with their children on the farm and in 4-H during this season of child-raising. “In the next seasons of our farm, we will be focusing on improved forages and mud mitigation, as well as continuing to improve our Charolais genetics,” said Jimmy Ray and Jane. “One day, we may even be in a season of our kids taking it over. With every season, Charolais has been a part of it all. We’re truly so blessed.”
