Sale Format
Each bull in the sale has a unique base price, which is included with his lot information. Bulls will be offered by breed, starting with the highest base-priced bull and finishing with the lowest basepriced bull. The auctioneer will offer each bull individually. If only one person claims a bull, then he sells at the base price. If more than one person is interested in the same bull, he will be auctioned starting at the base price. Bulls not sold during the auction will be for sale afterwards, but we cannot guarantee that base prices will be honored. A sale order will be available several days before the sale. Bulls will not go through the sale ring during the sale.
Sale Day Phone: 434-376-3567 Video of the bulls will be available about March 28, 2018 on our website: www.knollcrestfarm.com. 1
We Invite You to Join Us on April 14, 2018! We want to make it easy for you to attend our sale, so we are offering several options that will meet your individual needs: 1. In Person at the Sale Barn Come out and start the day with good fellowship and food. Amelia Area Cattlemen’s Association (Sponsored by Heifer Consignors) will be providing a ribeye sandwich lunch starting at 11 a.m. You can obtain a bidder number from the ladies in the barn office, walk around and view the bulls in their pens, and enjoy the sale environment. Individual video footage of each and every bull will play in the sale ring as the bulls are auctioned off during the sale. The bulls will not be sent through the ring during the auction. 2. Through Telo-Auction Before sale day, call Knoll Crest at 434-376-3567 or Paul Bennett at 434-941-8245 to obtain a Telo-Auction bidder number. During the sale, call 1-800-309-2350 (Conference ID number: 4505514#, when prompted speak your name and press “#”) to participate in the Telo-Auction bidding with a live auctioneer. 3. Internet Sales and Viewing You have two options: A. Watch and bid over LiveAuctions.TV Log onto www.LiveAuctions.TV. Bidders who are successful in making bids through either Telo-Auction or LiveAuctions.TV will be sent an invoice and contacted by the farm to organize suitable shipping arrangements. Videos of the animals will be available by March 28, 2018 on our website at www.knollcrestfarm.com.
SERVING OUR BULL CUSTOMERS SINCE 1944
When you buy a Knoll Crest bull, you do more than purchase an animal – you tie to a program.
Knoll Crest Farm is firmly committed to delivering service with each bull. We conduct our business in a manner that demands providing only the very best genetics for our valued customers. Along with “value-added” genetics, we provide “value added” service. BULL GUARANTEE: Knoll Crest will insure each bull it sells in an unconditional manner against death or injury for one year. The insurance value shall be for 100% of the total cost of the bull. Knoll Crest shall receive salvage value, if there is any. Purchaser agrees to have bulls examined (or autopsied) by a licensed veterinarian and notify Knoll Crest immediately. If a replacement bull is available, he will be provided, or if the buyer prefers, credit toward one bull will be given in the following year’s sale. Replacement bulls are not covered by this guarantee. BULL PICK UP AND DELIVERY: In the spring sale, our goal is to have all bulls picked up from the farm on sale day or shortly after the sale. Please arrange to pickup your bull on sale day or within 7 days of the sale date. For bulls sold through Telo-Auction or LiveAuctions.TV, we will contact you to organize suitable pickup or shipping arrangements.
DELIVERY: If you need a bull delivered, we can arrange to have your bull delivered to anywhere in the continental US. We guarantee it will not exceed $250 per head. VOLUME DISCOUNTS: Buyers purchasing 2 or more bulls will receive a volume discount as follows: 2 bulls = 2%, 3 bulls = 3%, 4 bulls = 4%, 5 or more bulls = 5%. These discounts do not apply outside of the sale and on replacement bulls. SEMEN INTEREST: Knoll Crest Farm will retain a 1/3 semen interest in every bull selling. In reality, this will affect only a very few bulls that sell. KCF reserves the right to collect semen at KCF’s cost and at the buyers’ convenience. KCF retains 1/3 of the semen revenue rights for each bull. The buyer owns 100% possession and 100% salvage value.
BULL DEVELOPMENT AND CONTEMPORARY GROUPING Weaning weights (for 205 day adjusted weights) were taken in October, approximately 30 days prior to weaning. Bulls were weaned on pasture and hay. The “test period” was from early October to early February. For that period, bulls continued to graze in 15-30 acre pastures, had access to grass, hay and free-choice bull developer composed primarily of commodity ingredients, corn and an intake-limiting ingredient from Purina. Some of the yearling weights are lighter than in years past, but we are confident the bulls are healthier, sounder and better prepared for breeding season without need for extra supplementation. The bulls were divided into several contemporary groups for “ratioing” purposes at weaning and yearling. They were grouped by breed, pre-weaning location and management. ET bulls were put into separate contemporary groups. Our goal is to minimize confusion, while practicing sound genetic evaluation principals. Please give Paul a call if you have questions. 2

American Angus Association $Values are multi-trait selection indexes expressed in dollars per head, to assist commercial beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. A $Value has meaning only when used in comparison to the $Value of another animal. For example, just as with EPDs, variation in $Values between animals indicates average expected differences in the relative value of progeny if random mating is assumed and the calves are exposed to the same environment.
How do I use them? $Values should be used to complement the criteria that producers already use when selecting bulls. The $Values are not designed to be driven by a single trait, as an index is multi-trait by design. These selection tools are the result of the application of industry-relevant market values to Angus genetics for preweaning, feedlot, and carcass merit. The $W, $F, $G and $B values on individual animals and the Sire Evaluation Report may be viewed at www.angus.org. Understanding Hereford EPDs Sustained Cow Fertility The AHA’s new Sustained Cow Fertility EPD (SCF) is a prediction of a cow’s ability to continue to calve from three years of age through twelve years of age, given she calved as a two-year-old. The EPD is expressed as a deviation in the proportion of the ten-possible calving’s to twelve years old expressed as a probability. For example, the daughters of a bull with a 30 EPD would have the genetic potential to have one more calf by age twelve then the daughters from a bull with a 20 EPD. In other words, the daughters from the 30 EPD bull would have a 10% greater probability of having one more calf than the bull with a 20 EPD. This is equivalent to saying that the daughters are 10% more likely to remain in the herd to age 12. Maternal Milk (MM) The milking ability of a sire’s daughters is expressed in pounds of calf weaned. It predicts the difference in average weaning weights of sires’ daughters’ progeny due to milking ability. Daughters of the sire with a +14 MM EPD should produce progeny with 205-day weights averaging 24 lb. more (as a result of greater milk production) than daughters of a bull with a MM EPD of -10 lb. (14 minus -10.0 = 24 lb.). This difference in weaning weight is due to total milk production during the entire lactation. Maternal Milk & Growth (M&G) Maternal Milk & Growth reflects what the sire is expected to transmit to his daughters for a combination of growth genetics through weaning and genetics for milking ability. It is an estimate of daughters’ progeny weaning weight. A bull with a 29 lb. M&G EPD should sire daughters with progeny weaning weights averaging 19 lb. heavier than progeny of a bull’s daughters with a M&G EPD of 10 lb. (29 minus 10 = 19 lb.). It is equal to one-half the sire’s weaning weight EPD, plus all of his MM EPD. No accuracy is associated with this since it is simply a mathematical combination of two other EPDs. It is sometimes referred to as “total maternal” or “combined maternal.” Maternal Calving Ease (MCE) MCE EPD predicts how easily a sires daughters will calve at 2 years of age and is measured on a percentage. For example, if sire A has a MCE EPD of 7 and sire B has a CE EPD of -3, then you would expect on average if comparably mated, sire A’s daughters would calve with a 10% more likely chance of being unassisted when compared to sire B’s daughters. Mature Cow Weight (MCW) The MCW EPD was designed to help breeders select sires that will either increase Scrotal Circumference (SC) or decrease mature size of cows in the herd. Measured in centimeters and adjusted to The trait was developed after years of cow 365 days of age, SC EPD is the best estimate weight data collection and the EPD relates of fertility. It is related to the bull’s own directly to the maintenance requirements of semen quantity and quality, and is also a cow herd. For example, if sire A has a MCW associated with age at puberty of sons and EPD of 100 and sire B has an EPD of 85, then daughters. Larger SC EPDs suggest younger you would expect the females of sire A, if age at puberty. Yearling sons of a sire with mated to similar cows, to be 15 lb. heavier at a .7 SC EPD should have yearling scrotal mature size. circumference measurements that average 0.7 centimeters (cm) larger than progeny by a Udder suspension (UDDR) UDDR EPDs are reported on a 9 (very bull with an EPD of 0.0 cm. tight) to 1 (very pendulous) scoring scale. Differences in sire EPDs predict the
The American Hereford Association (AHA) currently produces expected progeny differences (EPDs) for 17 traits and calculates three profit ($) indexes. AHA’s genetic evaluation makes use of a Marker Effects Model that allows the calculation of EPDs by incorporating the pedigree, phenotypic and genomic profile of an animal. Animals that have a genomic profile will be denoted with a GE-EPD logo. The current suite of Hereford EPDs and $ indexes includes: Calving Ease — Direct (CE) CE EPD is based on calving ease scores and birth weights and is measured on a percentage. CE EPD indicates the influence of the sire on calving ease in females calving at 2 years of age. For example, if sire A has a CE EPD of 6 and sire B has a CE EPD of -2, then you would expect on average if comparably mated, sire A’s calves would be born with an 8% more likely chance of being unassisted when compared to sire B’s calves. Birth Weight (BW) BW EPD is an indicator trait for calving ease and is measured in pounds. For example, if sire A has a BW EPD of 3.6 and sire B has a BW EPD of 0.6, then you would expect on average if comparably mated, sire A’s calves would come 3 lb. heavier at birth when compared to sire B’s calves. Larger BW EPDs usually, but not always, indicate more calving difficulty. The figure in parentheses found after each EPD is an accuracy value or reliability of the EPD. Weaning Weight (WW) WW EPD is an estimate of pre-weaning growth that is measured in pounds. For example, if sire A has a WW EPD of 60 and sire B has a WW EPD of 40, then you would expect on average if comparably mated, sire A’s calves would weigh 20 lb. heavier at weaning when compared to sire B’s calves. Yearling Weight (YW) YW EPD is an estimate of post-weaning growth that is measured in pounds. For example, if sire A has a YW EPD of 100 and sire B has a YW EPD of 70, then you would expect on average if comparably mated, sire A’s calves would weigh 30 lb. heavier at a year of age when compared to sire B’s calves. Dry Matter Intake (DMI) The Dry Matter Intake EPD predicts the daily consumption of pounds of feed. For example, if sire A has a DMI EPD of 1.1 and sire B has a DMI EPD of 0.1, you would expect sire B’s progeny, if comparably mated, to consume on average 1 pound of feed less per day.
14
difference expected in the sires’ daughters’ udder characteristics when managed in the same environment. For example, if sire A has a UDDR EPD of 0.4, and sire B has a UDDR EPD of -0.1, the difference in the values is 0.5, or one-half of a score. If daughters of sires A and B are raised and managed in the same environment, you would expect half a score better udder suspension in daughters of sire A, compared to sire B. Teat size (TEAT) TEAT EPDs are reported on a 9 (very small) to 1 (very large, balloon shaped) scoring scale. Differences in sire EPDs predict the difference expected in the sires’ daughters’ udder characteristics when managed in the same environment. For example, if sire A has a teat size EPD of 0.4, and sire B has a teat size EPD of -0.1, the difference in the values is 0.5, or one-half of a score. If daughters of sires A and B are raised and managed in the same environment, you would expect half a score smaller teat size in daughters of sire A, compared to sire B. Carcass Weight (CW) Carcass weight is a beneficial trait when considering the impact that pounds have relative to end product value. At the same age constant endpoint, sires with higher values for carcass weight will add more pounds of hot carcass weight compared to sires with lower values for carcass weight. For example, if sire A has a CW EPD of 84 and sire B has a CW EPD 64, then you would expect the progeny of sire A, if harvested at the same age constant endpoint, to have a 20-lb. advantage in terms of hot carcass weight. Rib Fat (FAT) The FAT EPD reflects differences in adjusted 365-day, 12th-rib fat thickness based on carcass measurements of harvested cattle. Sires with low, or negative FAT EPDs are expected to produce leaner progeny than sires with higher EPDs. Ultrasound measures are also incorporated into this trait and have been shown to be highly correlated with the performance of slaughter progeny. All data is expressed on a carcass scale. Ribeye Area (REA) REA EPDs reflect differences in an adjusted 365-day ribeye area measurement based on carcass measurements of harvested cattle. Sires with relatively higher REA EPDs are expected to produce better- muscled and higher percentage yielding slaughter progeny than will sires with lower REA EPDs. Ultrasound measurements are also incorporated into this trait and have been shown to be highly correlated with the performance of slaughter progeny. All data is expressed on a carcass scale. Marbling (MARB) MARB EPDs reflect differences in an adjusted 365-day marbling score (intramuscular fat, [IMF]) based on carcass measurements of harvested cattle. Breeding cattle with higher MARB EPDs should produce slaughter progeny with a higher degree of IMF and therefore higher quality grades. Ultrasound measurements are also incorporated into this trait and have been shown to be highly correlated with the performance of slaughter progeny. All data is expressed on a carcass scale.
Baldie Maternal Index (BMI$) The Baldy Maternal Index is a maternally focused index that is based on a production system that uses Hereford x Angus cross cows. Progeny of these cows are directed towards Certified Hereford Beef. This index has significant weight on Sustained Cow Fertility, which predicts fertility and longevity of females. There is a slightly positive weight on Weaning Weight, Mature Cow Weight and Milk which accounts for enough growth but ensures females do not increase inputs. There is some negative emphasis on Dry Matter Intake, but a positive weighting on Carcass Weight which is anticipated to provide profitability from finishing of non-replacement females and castrated males. Marbling and Rib-eye Area are also positively weighted to keep the harvested progeny successful for CHB. This index is geared to identify Hereford bulls that will be profitable when used in a rotational cross with mature commercial Angus cows. Brahman Influence Index (BII$) The Brahman Influence Index is a maternally focused index that is based on a production system that uses Brahman x Hereford cross cows. Progeny of these cows are directed towards a commodity beef market since Certified Hereford Beef does not accept Brahman influenced cattle. This index has significant weight on Sustained Cow Fertility, which predicts fertility and longevity of females. There is a slightly positive weight on Weaning Weight, Mature Cow Weight and Milk which accounts for enough growth but ensures females do not increase inputs. There is some negative emphasis on Dry Matter Intake, but a positive weighting on Carcass Weight which is anticipated to provide profitability in finishing non-replacement females and castrated males. Marbling and Rib-eye Area are also positively weighted to keep harvested progeny successful for a variety of commodity based programs. This index targets producers that use Hereford bulls on Brahman influenced cows. Certified Hereford Beef Index (CHB$) The Certified Hereford Beef Index is a terminal sire index that is built on a production system where Hereford bulls are mated to mature commercial Angus cows and all progeny will be targeted for Certified Hereford Beef after the finishing phase. This index has significant weight on Carcass Weight to ensure profit on the rail. As well there is a positive weighting for Average Daily Gain along with a negative weighting on Dry Matter Intake to ensure efficient pounds of growth in the finishing phase. Keep in mind, this production system takes advantage of complimentary breeding with the commercial Angus cow. Although Marbling is weighted positively in this index, a positive weighting for Rib-eye Area and a negative weighting for Back Fat are a greater priority in this index to allow for optimum end-product merit. This is the only index that has no emphasis on fertility. Remember that no replacement heifers are being retained.

American Gelbvieh Association Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) Expected progeny differences (EPDs) can be used to predict the average performance of a bull’s offspring compared to other calves in their contemporary group (a contemporary group being calves that were born in the same calving season, in the same year, herd, sex, and were managed similarly). EPDs are measured in the units of the trait, and show the differences in performance between animals. For example, if a bull has a weaning weight EPD of 80, and another bull in the same herd has a weaning weight EPD of 70, then bull A’s calves would be expected to be 10 pounds heavier at weaning than those of bull B. It is important to remember that this number is just a prediction of performance. Actual performance depends on many factors such as environment, management, etc. This being said, an EPD is by far the most reliable indicator of an animal’s genetic merit due to the amount of information incorporated into the calculation. The American Gelbvieh Association uses all available information to predict an animal’s EPD. This information includes: individual performance, pedigree, progeny and grand progeny performance, plus available genomic information. All this information is combined into one easy to use number that helps breeders make genetic improvement in their herd. EPD Definitions Listed below are the definitions of American Gelbvieh Association EPDs and the units in which they are published. The EPDs with an asterisk (*) next to the name are available to members only. Maternal traits Calving ease direct (CED): Percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving 18
ease. This EPD can be vital to a rancher looking to decrease the amount of calves pulled in his herd. Milk (Milk): The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight. Calving ease maternal (CEM): Represented as percent of unassisted births in a sire’s first-calving daughters. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease. This EPD is important to a rancher’s bottom line because it predicts which animals produce daughters with a genetic pre-disposition to calve unassisted as heifers. Heifer pregnancy (HP): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant as first-calf heifers in a regular breeding season, expressed as a percent. A higher value of this EPD is favorable, meaning that a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters get pregnant as first calf heifers compared to other sires in his contemporary group. 30-month pregnancy (Pg30): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant and calve at three years of age, given that they calved as first-calf heifers. This EPD is expressed as a percent, again, with a higher number being more favorable meaning a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters will calve at three years of age, given they calved as first-calf heifers. Stayability (ST): Predicts the genetic difference, in terms of percent probability, that a bull’s daughters will stay productive within a herd to at least six year of age. The stayability EPD is one of the best measures currently available to compare a bull’s ability to produce females with reproductive longevity. Growth Traits Birth weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf.
Weaning weight (WW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning. Yearling weight (YW): Predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling. Carcass traits Yield grade (YG): Differences in yield grade score, which is a predictor of percent retail product. Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio. Carcass weight (CW): Differences in pounds of hot carcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard age endpoint. Ribeye area (REA): Differences in ribeye area in inches between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeye areas are preferable. Marbling (MB): Predicts the differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades. Fat (FT): Differences for fat thickness, in inches, for a carcass over the 12th rib, smaller numbers of fat thickness are preferable as excess fat can be detrimental to yield grade. Efficiency traits Dry matter intake (DMI): Represents the average daily dry matter intake per day consumed in pounds. A negative, or lesser value, is more favorable. For example, Bull A has a DMI EPD of .15 and Bull B has a DMI EPD of -.20, so the progeny of Bull B consume, on average, .35 pound less dry matter per day than progeny from Bull A.
Indexes Total maternal (TM): An index that combines growth and milk information as a prediction of the weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters. As an index, this value is not reported with an accompanying accuracy. A greater TM value means a mother that returns comparatively higher weaning weights on her calves. TM Index = MK EPD + ½ WW EPD. $Cow™: Represents the genetic value in dollars of profit of an animal when retained as a replacement female relative to other animals in the herd. A higher number represents more profitable genetics for maternal productivity. $Cow will serve producers in selecting bulls that will sire daughters with stayability and reproductive efficiency as well as other traits that lead to profitability in a production system, such as milk, calving ease, moderate mature weight and the ability of calves to gain. A female’s genetics also influence the performance of her calves in the feedlot and at slaughter, so traits such as feed efficiency and carcass value are also included in $Cow. Efficiency profit index (EPI): An economic selection index developed to aid producers in selecting for more feed efficient cattle that still have acceptable amounts of gain. The EPI provides slight negative pressure on intake, while keeping gain at a constant value. By selecting on this index, producers will be able to find those animals that gain the same amount as their contemporaries while eating less. FPI™: An economic selection index designed to aid producers in selecting sires whose progeny will perform in the feedlot and are sold on a grade and yield standpoint. Well ranking sires for FPI have higher marbling and carcass weight than their contemporaries. As a terminal index, little emphasis is put on maternal traits such as stayability and calving ease.

Valley was purchased from Thomas Angus in Oregon, along with his dam and grandam. His unusual genomic and data profile, coupled with his progeny records, make him one of the most intriguing young sires in the Angus breed. He is highly fertile, docile, great footed and easy fleshing, plus he appears to thrive on fescue.

(434) 376-3567 Video Auction Format With the technology available we feel we can still have a “live” auction without a bull standing in the ring. This will allow us to place less stress on livestock and the crew handling them. Instead, we will have video footage of each and every bull prerecorded to play in the sale ring as the bulls are auctioned off. Video footage of the bulls will be available on www.knollcrestfarm.com by March 28, 2018. Bulls will be sorted and available for viewing on sale day. If you would like to view the bulls at the farm prior to the sale day, please give us a call and we would be glad to accommodate your request. Live audio and prerecorded video footage will also be available on www.LiveAuctions.TV for buyers to bid on that are unable to be at the auction on sale day. We will also be providing our telo-auction service as we have in years past.
