HEADQUARTERS
Building the Relationship by Blake Nelson, Executive Vice President
Greetings! With a quick start to 2018 it looks like it will be a good year for Maine-Anjou! We started the year off with increased interest and a stronger sale and show than we have had in recent years at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colo., This year brought increased traffic in the yards as many cattlemen were checking out different program’s genetics and also many more show entries on both the hill and in the pen shows. We followed up with our National Show and board meetings at the Southwestern Livestock Exposition in Fort Worth, Texas, where we had increased show entries and a nice crowd for the annual meeting. In Fort Worth we recognized retiring board members Marty Van Vliet, Jim Hett and Dennis Moore; we would
6
MARCH/APRIL 2018
like to thank all of them for their outstanding service in representing the American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) membership. We welcomed new board members Andy Jones, Brian Fox and DJ Folkerts. A major highlight was the presentation of the Heritage Road Hall of Fame portrait to the Ferris Family from Oklahoma. We appreciate Mrs. Jane Ferris and all her family for their great contributions to the Maine-Anjou breed. Along with these shows we have traveled to many sales, expos and meetings and I am reminded of something John Boddicker told me when I was hired. John said “Blake, what you will find most rewarding is the relationships and the people of the Maine-Anjou breed.” At first, I thought well there are great folks involved with
a lot of different breeds that I have had the pleasure to work with, but John is absolutely correct, we have some of the best people in the business that are involved in our breed. I believe that relationships are ultimately what this business is all about; the cattle are simply the median which is used in forming the link between people in the beef business. Building relationships can make or break you in most businesses and I think it is crucial for longevity in our world. So, what are some keys to creating and sustaining a loyal customer base? Below I will list some food for thought in how you handle your customers. On building a professional relationship you must treat it as you would any personal connection that you make. Before I get into some talking points,
HEADQUARTERS
honesty and integrity are the bedrock of any relationship! Both a good reputation and a bad reputation travel fast in our business, especially with today’s social media use. So, to start with “Do what’s right!” and it will pay off in these partnerships. Below I will cover some thoughts to see if they can benefit your operation. How do you like to be treated? Think about the last time you had a bad experience in a business transaction, was it a terrible experience? Is that what you had come to expect from this person or operation? Did you accept that they just can’t do better? Now, think of the last time you had an exceptional experience. What made this experience different? Whatever it was, was it someone who invested their time with you to make it memorable? Was it more than just a business deal, was it a relationship that even for an instance started with a feeling of trust and although short, you remember it and want more of it? Think about how you are treated by these successful partnerships. Build your relationships the same way. Listen carefully, what do you hear? Listening to what your customer’s needs and goals are
vital in a successful relationship/ partnership. They will tell you what they are looking for and then you can steer them in the right direction to what cattle can help them meet their operation’s goals. Discussing their objectives and honestly evaluating what you have to sell them are important initial steps to success. Following up with your customers is extremely important in building the loyalty for a return buyer. Knowing what is working or not working and then giving advice can prove to be very beneficial for both parties. Operations that have continued success all have some traits in common: trustworthiness, open communication and a quality product that they stand behind. If you listen to your customers these are some things they will be looking for. Maintaining the relationship and trust must never be taken for granted. Maintaining it means you are dedicated to deliver and keep your word, this is what a good partnership should strive for each and every day. As I am traveling I have some time to reflect and analyze things in our business that make the difference. My previous points are already used by many and I may be preaching to the choir, but if you are new or struggling in the business you might consider these
things. I challenge myself every day to grow as a person and to work towards goals that I have set for our breed, I know that many of you do this as well for your operation and I just want to say Thank You!! I would also like to remind everyone to check out the AMAA Maine Max Bull Test Sale that will be online with DV Auctions on March 27th, 2018. This is a great set of bulls from some of the top Maine- Anjou programs in the United States. The bulls will be backed by gain and performance records as well as ultrasound data. If you have any questions or we can assist you or your customers in any way, please, let us know! Best regards, Blake

COMMERCIAL CONNECTION
Predictable Outcomes for Forward Thinking Producers by Josh Cribbs, Commercial Development Director
We are well into bull selling season and according to the numbers averages are up relative to last year. This could certainly be due to the feeder calf market holding strong this fall and also because of the energy that surrounds the breed for multiple reasons. What does this mean as breed? As always a truly good bull sells well, and a bull that’s centered around the averages struggles. Buyers want to know that their new herd sire will make a difference in their cow herd, not that it might make a difference. More times than not we find ourselves centered around the
cattle we want to make and less around what cattle producers need us to make. It’s a fact, we get more fired up at calving season if we believe that we have done our due diligence on the mating strategy side to make the next great one. We all complain about night checks – especially if you live in the north – but the truth is we really don’t mind them when we get a look at the reward of the time spent deciding how to line cows up during breeding season. Unfortunately, during sale time, that doesn’t always translate to increased traffic, interest or sale averages. We hope that others will find the same value in the cattle
that we generate, but it’s not always the case. It’s important to remember that we have to make a product that others prefer. We, like every other breed in our classification as a “terminal” breed have an obligation to the fed cattle industry. The facts are that we can add muscle and lean growth and we can maintain carcass weight and quality grade. To do this we have to supply a product that can be bought, used and benefits reaped from the reward. Making mating decisions that please us or chasing just phenotype or genotype alone doesn’t always equate to earned money or added bull sale premiums. Bull sales happen for
COMMERCIAL 8
MARCH/APRIL 2018
every breed and each try to define themselves for a specific purpose. The Maine-Anjou breed is no different than any other, we have to continue to define ourselves. A product with no buyers is really not a product at all. Making sure to supply what others want is the important part to being successful at moving forward. Blending phenotype and genotype plays a big part in having the ability to sell bulls. When people are used to being around the showring, they more times than not think of phenotype as an attractive front end or a perfect hip and hind leg design. When it comes to breeding bulls, it’s all about stout, rugged, big bodied bulls that are balanced and have the appropriate look for customers. Blending that with genetically progressive cattle on paper, that are backed by performance based cows, is the answer to having a product that is sellable. We have reached a point in the cattle industry that cattle producers and people that evaluate cattle for commercial breeding or for hybrid seed stock purposes want more than finished results. They want the answer to the end product before they ever make their selection. Their bull buying investment is more than just a light decision. Ninety-one percent of beef cattle operations in the US are family owned, and the livelihood of that family depends on the right decisions being made in the selection of breeding stock. It
drives the premium that they will receive at weaning time of the extra money commanded from the bred heifers. So, how much is a bull worth or how do we build value for our potential sellable bulls? Some are hesitant to buy into creating cattle that excel in genotypic value. Do the numbers really predict added value? Will I lose that extra look I have in my cattle? The bigger question is why would they not predict value and further more if the buyer wants genetic merit to match phenotypic value than it’s our place as a breed and as an association to supply that product. Furthermore, having cattle with all the genetic merit a breeder can ask for married to a phenotype that has no visual quality is just as unsellable. Buying cattle and finding an animal that fits your program regardless of the size of operation or the money available to be spent is as much of an emotional decision to livestock breeders as anything else. They want the opportunity to find their next herd sire. Looking forward to the rest of the bull sale season, I encourage our breeders and cattlemen to be a student of sales around the country for multiple breeds, not just Maine-Anjou. Pay attention to what’s selling and specifically what’s selling high. We are obligated to making cattle better and making cattle that fit the demand of both seed stock and commercial breeders. It’s where we will see an increase in our cattle’s
value and where we can start to gain traction in the bull market again. Marketing plans are centered on having a product that someone wants. We are very close to having a significant footing in the commercial industry. It comes down to having data behind us and contemporary groups built upon the quality of data our good bulls possess. This will allow us to be seated perfectly to offer the correct “terminal’ outcross for a currently maternal driven cattle industry. Breeders want results and they want them at the time they make their next breeding choice. Predictable outcomes from bulls backed by predictable genetics, that’s modern Maine-Anjou.

ANNOUNCEMENTS online registering In order to register online you must have a member number and password. If you have forgotten your login information or need access to Digital Beef, please contact AMAA staff via e-mail or by phone. Registrations are completed and mailed in the order they are received. If you wish to place a rush on your registration work you must contact the AMAA to request a rush or Fed Ex.
RUSH ORDERS If you are selling an animal, we ask that you register and transfer the animal in a timely manner to avoid extra charges and to assure buyers they are purchasing from a reputable business person. Rushes will be done in the order received; a rush fee is currently $50 (covers eight head). If rush work is faxed, it will be considered a rush unless otherwise specified. It is the breeder’s responsibility to give us a follow-up phone call to make sure the work is legible and to cover all fees. It is not our office staff ’s responsibility to call breeders that fax in registration work. No work will be released until payment is complete. Rush work is processed ahead of the regular work that is received in our office and mailed by regular mail within one to two business days. We will do our best to complete rush work that is received in our office by 2 p.m. (Monday – Friday). There is no same-day turnaround. If requiring a registration number only, it will still be considered a rush as we still have to process the work to obtain the number.

AMAA NEWS & EVENTS Helpful tips when registering
To avoid delays in your registration work during our busy season follow the tips below. Double check that all blanks and information are correct and complete before mailing or submitting online. Things most commonly missed are: o Missing herd prefix and herd ID o Birthdates o Date of sale o Name of animal o Payment Make sure the person that is registering the animal owns the dam with the exception of ET calves. If an ET calf, make sure the donor dam has been DNA, PHA & TH tested and that we have the results on file. If you are checking on work please e-mail us at robin@amaapc.com. When calling or e-mailing please have the name and breeder number of the person submitting the work. When registering annual active dams for performance only animals please submit them online if you have the capabilities. This will help the registrar processing tremendously. We appreciate you and your business and want to make sure that the registration process runs as smooth as possible. Thank you in advance for your extra time in making sure all work is correct, complete and received in a timely manner.
Registrations for upcoming shows It is now time to register show animals for winter shows. Please keep in mind during the winter show season you will need to allow at least two to three weeks for turn-around on registrations and
transfers sent in to our office. If a paper is needed within that time, a rush fee ($50 per eight head) will be required before the work will be completed.
block registration discounts It is the time to buy block of registrations for the 2018 year. Blocks can only be used on heifers and bulls under 13 months of age from January 1 to December 31 of each year. Blocks can save you as much as 30% in registration fees. All block fee must be paid before registering. Any unused registrations will expire at the end of the year.
bull calf registration If registering a bull calf born after Jan. 1, 2014, it must be TH/PHA free by parentage or have testing completed prior to registering and on file with the AMAA. Carriers will no longer be registered, but may be entered as a foundation animal. All progeny out of a Foundation carrier bull needs to be tested free of that defect prior to registration. If registrations are submitted before testing has been completed, the animal will not be registered. Instead, the animal will be given a performance number at a nonrefundable penalty charge of $10. Once the animal has been tested the registration may be completed at the regular rate. Please plan accordingly as testing can take up to three-four weeks.
Foundation animals Non-registered bulls and females must be entered as a foundation animal prior to MaineTainer progeny being registered. All current “P” (performance only)
ANNOUNCEMENTS cattle will be grand-fathered into the program. If the sire is an AI sire and registered at another breed association, the pedigree and testing must be on file with the AMAA. The charge to add a sire pedigree will be a one-time charge of $40. If the AMAA finds that the pedigree has already been paid for by another breeder, the $40 charge will not be applied. Dams registered at another breed association may also be added for a one-time charge of $25. See the new self-billing sheet for foundation fees.
ONLINE transfers When transferring an animal on line make sure there is not a member number already created for the buyer. Creating more than one number for an individual creates registration problems later. If you find the buyer in the system at a different address please notify the buyer first to confirm the address and then notify the Maine office to update the account. It is always a good idea to always search for the buyer using the search tools before doing the work that way if they have a different address it is caught before entering the registration and transfer. When creating a new profile for a buyer please make sure to never give a junior a farm name. Please enter the junior’s name on the farm line and also as the contact.
2018 MAPP enrollment The 2018 MAPP (Maine-Anjou Performance Program) were due no later than December 15, 2017. Anyone that did not return their MAPP inventories by December 15, 2017 should have received an invoice for their 2018 dues and
AMAA NEWS & EVENTS MAPP. Please make sure to pay those invoices within 60 days of the invoice date to avoid finance charges and removal from the MAPP program. If you no longer wish to be in the MAPP, please e-mail or call Donna Grame to be moved to the Breeder’s Choice program.
dna, th and pha requirements Prior to registering any ET calves, all donor dams (including commercial or non-registered dams) must have DNA, TH and PHA on file in our office. Also, all AI sires are required to have the same on file. Therefore, our office will hold any ET registrations submitted out of dams without testing on file as well as all registrations out of AI sires that do not have complete testing on file. If the donor dam is deceased and not tested, we do require that the ET(s) have the tests done, in the absence of the donor’s records. The DNA, TH and PHA testing can be done at GeneSeek. A submission form is found on our Web site, maine-anjou.org. Maine-Anjou samples are put into testing at GeneSeek on Wednesdays, please plan accordingly when submitting. DNA results will be back in the AMAA office late the next week after the testing begins; TH and PHA results will be in our office two weeks later, usually on a Thursday. We would like to start sending the test results by e-mail only, please make sure we have an up-todate e-mail address for you, if applicable.
maine/angus papers If you wish to obtain a Maine/ Angus registration select the MA/ Angus box when registering on line. You will receive an error that AMAA staff must check the testing and percentage requirements so please make sure to validate your entry to save it so that that AMAA can check the entry. If you submit a registration on paper, please put Maine/Angus in the comment section of the application. If the animal does not qualify as a Maine/Angus it will be recoded as a regular Mainetainer. A Maine/Angus paper will be blue in color, have Maine/Angus under the Maine Logo, and will have MaineTainer across the center of the paper. The animal can be shown as a MaineTainer or Maine Angus. Requirements: *Off spring must be 3/8 or higher to qualify *Bulls and Heifers must be TH/ PHA free by parents or by test *Bulls must be NH, CA and AM free by parents or free by test. Angus pedigrees will not be assumed free of these defects. Bulls must be clean of DS if out of a Red Angus. *Angus percentages will only be counted from actual registered Angus. Commercial Angus percentages will not be used in the Maine/Angus equation.

Ferris Ranch The
Each year at the National MaineAnjou Show, the American MaineAnjou Association (AMAA) inducts a Maine-Anjou breeding program into its Hall of Fame. Each program inducted has had a lasting impact on the breed and this year’s inductee was The Ferris Ranch, Tom, Jane & Glen Ferris. The Ferris Ranch was a family operation located in Oklahoma. The Ferris’s were very proud of their program and the genetics
Tom, Jane and Glen
they had placed throughout the industry stretched far and wide. Probably the most notable was the bull, Ferris Ranch Strutt. When the AMAA was beginning its venture with the Voice magazine, the Ferris Ranch stepped up to the plate in support of the AMAA’s new promotional vehicle. Glen served as a member of the AMAA Board of Directors and was an avid, energetic voice for the junior program! The present
day success of the American Junior Maine-Anjou Association (AJMAA) is a direct result of the early guidance that Glen provided. The Maine-Anjou breed is a better breed because of Ferris Ranch's integrity, dedication and genetic contribution. Jane Ferris was presented a portrait that will forever hang in a place of honor at the AMAA headquarters.

BOE Epic BOE Epic is one of the most unique Maine-Anjou sires to surface in years. He was impressive as a yearling in Denver 2017 at 10 months-of-age weighing 1,221 pounds and scanning a 17.8 REA. His build was equally impressive with bold center rib, massive hipped, and impeccable structure. Epic made his return to Denver in 2018 where he was admired by cattlemen of many breeds and was selected the Grand Champion MaineAnjou Bull. He was also selected as Grand Champion at the 2018 Fort Worth Stock Show. Epic is truly one of a kind, and now his calves are hitting the ground and they are outstanding. Without a doubt, he is going to add bone, power, body, and performance.
