Greetings! We have had a quick start to 2020 and it looks like it will be a good year for MaineAnjou! We started with great interest and a strong sale and show at the National Western in Denver, Colo. This year brought solid traffic in the yards as many cattlemen were checking out different program’s genetics and also many more show entries in both the hill and pen shows. We followed up with the Southwestern Livestock Exposition in Fort Worth, Texas, where we had increased show entries and a nice crowd. We also had strong sales at both the Bright Lights sale in Denver and Black Hills Stock Show in Rapid City, S.D. Traveling to shows and sales throughout the year is one of my favorite things to do, getting to see the great folks in our breed and lay eyes on some of the breed’s best cattle. It is great to see what the different genetic lines are delivering. I realize this is not the full conception to carcass evaluation, but it does give us a good snapshot of what is happening with the genetics. As we approach the spring we can look forward to green grass and the new calves hitting the ground and see what matings have worked and some we may not try again. This is an exciting time to see our mating plans in action and how our program is performing. I think it always a good idea to be objective when we look at our program. MARCH/APRIL 2020

Below I am going to address a few things that we may ask ourselves as breeders when looking at where we are and where we would like to be. 1. Evaluating last year’s calf crop at weaning/selling and also how did our cowbase perform. Ultimately a strong factory (cow-base) is a must and like any good business we should always be looking to improve on, and also scrutinize at times, to make sure it is performing up to standards. The calf crop is the result of the factory and we can see real quick if the calf weaned off heavy, stayed healthy, and meets our visual standards. Yes, we must always consider it takes two genetic sides to contribute so keep this mind and don’t blame it all on the bull, or at the same time do not give him all the glory if things worked out. Weaning weights are always great indicators to consider, but also in many of our Maine-Anjou herds saleability is a factor. Looking at bloom, phenotype, and disposition are just some of the things to consider if you are marketing seedstock and potential show calves. To me this is where we have to stay focused on the goals and objectives of our own operations and ask ourselves are we producing what we like or what the customer wants? This is tough because we have to sell cattle for income and sometimes we may feel like we know better than the customer of what they need (maybe or maybe not?). Another angle is asking ourselves, “Are we producing cattle that look the part at
six months of age or will they look the part at six years of age? This can be a catch 22, ideally the kind we are producing would be strong at any age but this is something from a marketing, herd improvement and breed progression perspective we have to ask ourselves. This is where you as the owner/ operator have to be honest with yourself and do what is best in your mind to move toward your program goals. 2. The next step that I often think about is cowherd checklists for the best results possible - nutrition, health protocols, culling and replacement selection. These are just some of things that I am sure go through your mind. I will be the first to admit, and Ruth can confirm this, I am a hoarder by nature and this was the same when we ran more cattle. You have to let emotional attachment go away when you are keeping and culling to maximize herd efficiency. This can be easier said than done but can also be of great impact to the bottom line, pounds or dollars weaned per cow is a great place to start. On herd health, it is always a great idea to visit with your local vet to see if there are any health suggestions that may be new or products that have changed that you may need to address. The nutrition side can be constantly changing as dictated by price and availability so I won’ break it down. I know there are more detailed things we can take a look at, but these are just some high points to consider. MAINE-ANJOU- Vision, Vigor, Value!

Springtime is almost here. When this issue and article reach you, spring calving will be in full swing for some and almost done for others. It begs the questions, “What will your next decision(s) be from a breeding standpoint?” and “How will you continue to reach your goals of creating whatever product you want and need for your customer base?” It is an exciting time to be in the MaineAnjou business. Within this issue you will find many new AI sire options boasting multiple percentages, they should provide you the versatility breeding wise to make whatever you want calf wise. The Bright Lights Sale at Denver was extremely strong and from it have come multiple bulls that will land in AI studs this spring to be collected. We have seen an influx of high and purebred pedigrees, both derived from old and new genetics. It is obvious that over the last year, with the incorporation of the Maine-Angus program, our fullblood, purebred, and high Maine-Anjou genetics have become more popular. It has, in turn, driven the quality and value of the cattle within our breed. One theme that continues to shine through is the cattle that sell the best are the ones that offer the most quality. They have a pedigree that is popular and easy to breed around. Progressively breeding is important and incorporating Angus genetics into our herdbook in a more assertive way is doing just that – it will only increase the outcross possibilities.
We have seen trying times in the beef cattle business and finding outlets for cattle has become tougher and tougher. Remember though, those trends have happened across all breeds. It’s important to know the trials we face and the things our breed struggles with… well, other breeds do too. It’s carving out market share that becomes the greatest battle. From an Association standpoint, we are focused on providing data that can be counted on through research projects currently in progress at South Dakota State University. Most recently, cattle on feed – being fed a high roughage diet through the growing phase – are gaining 3.2lbs per day and converting around 5:1 feed to gain. As data continues to flow in, we will certainly make it available to you. I look forward to finishing up the spring bull sale season and cannot wait for the summer and herd visits to get a chance to see this year’s calf crop. The Maine-Anjou business has a strong foundation, and noise around the breed is certainly growing. Maine-Anjou... A Tradition That’s Trending!

CREATING SUSTAINED SUCCESS THE IMPORTANCE OF FETAL PROGRAMMING

As the calendar ushers in the new year, many ranchers are given a first glimpse of the results of their mating decisions during spring calving. This exciting period often informs sire selection as producers strive to enhance the efficiency and marketability of their calf crops. However, bolstering calf performance via genetics is a continuous process that endures following breeding MARCH/APRIL 2020

season. Recent developments in cattle research continue to underscore the importance of fetal programing, or the concept that lifetime performance of each calf is influenced by events prior to birth. The maternal environment provided for a fetus/ calf is imperative and can lead to positive or negative outcomes. This notion is far from earth shattering, for years human nutritionists and
medical doctors have stressed the importance of fetal programing. None of us would advise a pregnant woman to smoke, or consume harmful drugs, as it would provoke irreversible damage to their baby. But what about nutrition, would you advocate for a pregnant woman to lose weight? An infamous blockade during World War II provided insight into the importance of fetal nutrition.
The “Dutch Famine” occurred as the German army cut off the Netherlands from essential food supplies for 3 months, impacting approximately 4.5 million people. Following the war, researchers identified pregnant women during the “Dutch Famine” and tracked the lifetime health of their children, to better understand the effects of fetal nutrient depravation. The results were staggering. Mothers who were pregnant during the 1st trimester of the blockade, had children who had significantly higher incidence of: cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol, and obesity. Women pregnant during the 2nd and 3rd trimester of the “Dutch Famine” had children that were more likely diabetic and suffered from kidney disease and asthma. The results of this study gave credibility to the concept known as “epigenetics,” which states that although genes themselves do not change, environmental factors like nutrition cause genes to express themselves differently leading to altered phenotypes and outcomes. So how does this relate to cattle production? If you are striving to maximize the genetic potential of your calf crop, it is paramount that your pregnant cows are receiving adequate nutrition. Even calves from the best cow families will have underwhelming phenotypes, if they did not receive the proper nutrients during fetal development. For instance, the consensus amongst economists is that reproductive efficiency drives profitability of most cattle operations. Again, not a shocking statement, we are all aware it takes live calves to turn a profit in the cattle business. If you consider that a replacement heifers’ reproductive efficiency maybe imprinted prior to birth, fetal programing is arguably the most important
investment we make. During the 1st trimester, the lifetime ovarian reserve is established for a fetus. Meaning that all the eggs a heifer will ever have, is set in stone six months before she is even born! A 2013 study conducted in Ireland by Francesca Mossa found that cows who were restricted to 60% of their nutrient requirement for energy had higher circulating blood testosterone levels and produced heifers with higher blood pressure and lower ovarian reserves compared to cows receiving 100% of their nutritional requirement. Heifers and cows with low ovarian reserve respond poorly to superovulation, and often have problems getting bred. Heifer reproduction can also be improved during the 3rd trimester of pregnancy. A 2007 University of Nebraska study conducted by J. L. Martin and collaborators, reported that cows offered 1 pound of protein supplement per day, raised heifers that had a 93% pregnancy rate with 77% calving during the first 21 days, compared to an 80% pregnancy rate and 49% early calving rate for heifers born from cows receiving no supplement during the 3rd trimester. This study further strengthens the narrative that bred cow nutrition imprints the reproductive success and longevity of replacement heifers. What about bull and steer calves? Does fetal programing and pregnant cow nutrition affect the male offspring at the same magnitude as heifers? Although all phases of pregnancy influence bull performance, the 2nd trimester maybe the most important and is associated with muscle tissue formation. During this trimester muscle fiber (cells) type is established, which is the precursor to future performance and phenotypic expression. A 2010 study conducted by Keith
Underwood at South Dakota State University compared cows grazing native pasture (6.0% crude protein) versus cows grazing improved pasture (11.1% crude protein) during the 2nd trimester of pregnancy. The cows that consumed the high-quality improved pasture raised calves that were 31 and 48 pounds heavier at weaning and harvest respectively, compared to cows consuming the lower quality native range. Considering that the number of muscle fibers (cells) are established prior to birth, pregnant cow nutrition is imperative to all cattle producers. Commercialcow calf operators are paid by the pound, and total muscle mass drives weight. Conversely, seedstock bull producers and club calf breeders receive a premium for phenotypically heavy muscled cattle. No matter what trimester cows are pregnant, nutrition is vital to the success and performance of the resulting calf crop. It might seem expensive to invest in a high-quality mineral program or a protein/energy supplement for pregnant cows, but the return on investment can be astounding. Although genes of calves cannot be changed, their expression can be altered by fetal nutrition, which predetermines calf phenotype and performance. Heifers born from cows receiving appropriate nutrition are more fertile and thus more likely to experience herd longevity. Likewise, cows who consumed a suitable plane of nutrition while pregnant wean off calves with more pay weight and have lower frequency of respiratory disease. Breeding season can be an exciting time, however artificial insemination or bull turnout is not the end of a producer’s opportunity to maximize the genetic potential of future calf crops. 2020 AMAA Scholarships The American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) offers scholarship opportunities for deserving AJMAA members. Scholarship winners will be announced at the National Junior Heifer Show during the awards banquet.
SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION AND REQUIREMENTS. AMAA SCHOLARSHIP (Offering two (2) $1,000 Scholarships): - Applicant must be a current junior member of the AJMAA. - Applicant must be at least a graduating high school student, but must not have reached their 21st birthday prior to May 1 of the current year. - The AMAA Scholarship may be awarded to an individual one time. Therefore, previous recipients of the scholarship are not eligible. - Applicant should display an interest in Maine-Anjou cattle and should be an active participant in the activities of the breed. - Applications must be submitted online by MAY 1, 2020 and include the following: - AMAA official online application for scholarship. - A personal letter of recommendation from a current Maine-Anjou breeder. - Two personal letters of recommendation from a non-relative that would fit into the following category: (County Agent; 4-H Advisor; FFA Advisor; Church Youth Advisor; Pastor; School Principal; School Superintendent; School Counselor or Employer.) - Recommendation letters will also be submitted online. **A total of 3 letters will need to be submitted. MAINE WHAT IS MAINE ANGUS?
The Maine Angus program is an initiative created by the American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) to showcase the complementation of Maine-Anjou genetics when crossed with Angus or Red Angus cattle. This program will reveal Maine-Anjou cattle’s ability to enhance feed efficiency and red meat yield when placed on British based genetics. This program should provide seedstock that will increase production and carcass yield through heterosis. The name Maine Angus is both strong and informative by stating exactly what breeds are present in said animal. The standard requirement is that both parents must be registered at the AMAA, American Angus Association (AAA) or Red Angus Association of America (RAAA). This will provide confirmed lineage and genetic information along with valuable EPDs. Through a partnership with the AAA our EPDs will be updated with the latest genetic evaluation by the AAA which will provide the breeders and customers the best genetic prediction available. This program is focused on producing quality registered offspring that will aid in the incorporation of MaineAnjou genetics into the mainstream of the USA beef sector.
PROGRAM STANDARDS
Maine Angus refers to cattle with the following characteristics: • The animal will have between 3/8 Maine-Anjou to 5/8 Maine-Anjou blood and have between 3/8 registered Angus to 5/8 registered Angus and/or registered Red Angus blood. MARCH/APRIL 2020

• Both parents must be registered at the AMAA, AAA or RAAA to confirm lineage. • Qualifying cattle can have no more than 1/8 of non-registered blood or other breeds. • A registered Maine Angus bull must be proven free of genetic defects PHA and TH. Depending on the Maine Angus bull’s genetic makeup, the individual must also be proven free of known Angus lethal genetic defects (Ex. AM, NH and CA) and/or known lethal Red Angus genetic defects (Ex. AM, NH, CA and OS) whether determined by pedigree or test. • A registered Maine Angus female must be proven free of PHA and TH, whether identified by pedigree or test.
MAINE ANGUS COLOR STANDARDS
All qualifying individuals will be predominately solid black or red in color. White markings are only allowed on the underline and switch of the tail. Feet and legs must be solid black or red. • NOTE: All Maine Angus animals that do not meet the color requirment, but were registered prior to Jan. 1, 2019, will retain their Maine Angus papers. NEW MEMBERS: All new members must choose a program when submitting a new membership. The two programs that are offered are MAPP and Breeders Choice. More information on these two programs is available by visiting maine-anjou.org and clicking on “Member Services” “MAPP Agreement.” If a membership is submitted without choosing a program, the new member will be placed in the Breeders Choice program.
MEMBERSHIP ACCOUNTS It is the AMAA policy to only share account information with those authorized on an active account, no matter the age of the account holder. The account holder must provide written permission to add a person(s) to their account to transfer and register on their behalf. Anyone that is not authorized on an account will not be provided passwords or invoice information no matter the age or relation to the account holder. The account holder is the only one that can call or e-mail the AMAA directly to remove or add any person(s) to/ from their account. Any authorized person on the account can register, transfer, obtain or change passwords once they are on the account. 2020 DUES If you have not paid your 2020 dues please do so as soon as possible. Dues run from January 1 to December 31 of each year no matter when you pay them. Active adult accounts will receive the Voice magazine as long as dues are current. HELPFUL TIPS WHEN REGISTERING: To avoid delays in your registration work during our busy season follow the tips below. Double check that all blanks and information are correct and complete before mailing or submitting online. Things most commonly missed are: o Missing herd prefix and herd ID o Birthdates o Date of sale o Name of animal o Payment Make sure the person that is registering the animal owns the dam with the exception of ET calves. If an ET calf, make sure the donor dam has DNA verified and has been PHA & TH tested with the results on file. If you are checking on testing work please e-mail Paige at paige@amaapc.com. When calling or e-mailing please have the name and breeder number of the person submitting the work. When registering annual active dams for performance only animals please submit them online if you have the capabilities. This will help the registrar processing tremendously. We appreciate you and your business and want to make sure that the registration process runs as smooth as possible. Thank you in advance for your extra time in making sure all work is correct, complete and received in a timely manner.
REGISTRATIONS: Please dispose of any old registration and self-billing worksheets. The AMAA will no longer offer a 10% online discount for
registration work that is completed through Digital Beef. The AMAA will assess a $5 fee for any registration work received by fax, e-mail or by mail. To avoid this fee, please log into your online Digital Beef account to complete all registration work. New forms can be downloaded from our main webpage under Digital Beef/ Registrations – Printable Forms. If you need assistance logging into your online account please contact us at maine@amaapc.com. If work is faxed or e-mailed it is the responsibility of the breeder to give us a follow up phone call to make sure that the work is legible and to cover all fees. BLOCK REGISTRATION DISCOUNTS: Want to save on registration costs? Consider pre-paying for a block of registrations. The cost savings are as follows: • 15 head - 12% • 25 head - 15% • 50 head - 20% • 75 head - 25% • 100 head - 30% Blocks may only be used on animals under 13 months of age and may not be used on steers or foundation animals. Blocks will only be valid from January 1 - December 31 of each year. Any unused block registration numbers will expire. If you are interested in learning more about block purchases, please contact us at 816-431-9950. MAPP ENROLLMENT MAPP inventories were due December 15, 2019. An invoice was mailed to all MAPP participants

who did not return inventories by the deadline. These invoices will not be adjusted and will be expected to be paid in full within 60 days from the date of the invoice. Any unpaid balances after the 60 days will be removed from MAPP and will require a $50 reactivation fee and back fees to re-enter the herd program. FOUNDATION ANIMALS: Non-registered bulls and females must be entered as a foundation animal prior to progeny being registered. All current “P” (performance only) cattle will be grand-fathered into the program. If the sire is an AI sire and registered at another breed association, the pedigree and testing must be on file with the AMAA. The charge to add a sire pedigree will be a onetime charge of $40. If the AMAA finds that the pedigree has already been paid for by another breeder, the $40 charge will not be applied. Dams registered at another breed association may also be added for a one-time charge of $25. See the new self-billing sheet for foundation fees.
ONLINE TRANSFERS: When transferring an animal online make sure there is not a member number already created for the buyer. Creating more than one number for an individual creates registration problems later. If you find the buyer in the system at a different address please notify the buyer first to confirm the address and then notify the AMAA office to update the account. It is always a good idea to always search for the buyer using the search tool before doing the work, that way if they have a different address
it is caught before entering the registration and transfer. When creating a new profile for a buyer please make sure to never give a junior a farm name. Please enter the junior’s name on the farm line and also as the contact. RUSH ORDERS: If you are selling an animal, we ask that you register and transfer the animal in a timely manner to avoid extra charges and to assure buyers they are purchasing from a reputable business person. Rushes will be done in the order received; a rush fee is currently $50 (covers eight head). No work will be released until payment is complete. Rush work is processed ahead of the regular work that is received in our office and mailed by regular mail within one to two business days. We will do our best to complete rush work that is received in our office by 2 p.m. (Monday – Friday). There is no same-day turnaround. If requiring a registration number only, it will still be considered a rush as we still have to process the work to obtain the number. DNA, TH AND PHA REQUIREMENTS: Prior to registering any ET calves, all donor dams (including commercial or non-registered dams) must have DNA, TH and PHA on file in our office. Also, all AI sires are required to have the same on file. Therefore, our office will hold any ET registrations submitted out of dams without testing on file as well as all registrations out of AI sires that do not have complete testing on file.
If the donor dam is deceased and not tested, we do require that the ET(s) have the tests done, in the absence of the donor’s records. The DNA, TH and PHA testing can be done at GeneSeek. A submission form is found on our Web site, maineanjou.org. Samples must be on a hair card, blood card or TSU in order to be submitted. Sampling supplies can be ordered on our website under the Genetics/Testing tab. Animals must be in the AMAA herd book before testing can be requested. Please note that testing takes approximately 3-4 weeks from the time the sample arrives at the lab. We would like to start sending the test results by e-mail only, please make sure we have an up-to-date e-mail address for you, if applicable. BULL CALF REGISTRATION: If registering a bull calf born after Jan. 1, 2014, it must be TH/PHA free by parentage or have testing completed prior to registering and on file with the AMAA. Carriers will no longer be registered, but may be entered as a foundation animal. All progeny out of a Foundation carrier bull needs to be tested free of that defect prior to registration. If registrations are submitted before testing has been completed, the animal will not be registered. Instead the animal will be given a performance number at a nonrefundable penalty charge of $10. Once the animal has been tested the registration may be completed at the regular rate. Please plan accordingly as testing can take up to three or four weeks.

MAINE ANGUS PAPERS: If you wish to obtain a Maine Angus registration select the MA/ Angus box when registering online. You will receive an error that AMAA staff must check the testing and percentage requirements, please make sure to validate your entry to save it so that AMAA staff can check the entry. If you submit a registration on paper, please put Maine Angus in the comment section of the application. If the animal does not qualify as a Maine Angus it will be recoded as a MaineTainer. A Maine Angus paper will be blue in color, have Maine Angus under the Maine logo, and will have MaineTainer across the center of the paper. The animal can be shown as a MaineTainer if there is not a Maine Angus division at the show.
MAINE/ANGUS REQUIREMENTS • Maine Angus refers to cattle with the following characteristics: • The animal will have between 3/8 Maine-Anjou to 5/8 Maine- Anjou blood and have between 3/8 registered Angus to 5/8registered Angus and/or registered Red Angus blood. • The standard is both parents must be registered at the AMAA, American Angus Association (AAA) or Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) will provide validated lineage. • Qualifying cattle can have no more than 1/8 of non-registered blood or other breeds. • A registered Maine Angus bull must be proven free of genetic defects PHA and TH. Depending

on the Maine Angus bull’s genetic makeup, the individual must also be proven free of known Angus lethal genetic defects (Ex. AM, NH and CA) and/or known lethal Red Angus genetic defects (Ex. AM, NH, CA and OS) whether determined by pedigree or test. • A registered Maine Angus female must be proven free of PHA and TH, whether identified by pedigree or test.
MAINE ANGUS COLOR REQUIREMENTS: • All qualifying individuals will be predominately solid black or red in color. White markings are only allowed on the underline and switch of the tail. • Starting Jan. 1, 2019 all animals that have qualified and registered as Maine Angus prior to Jan. 1, 2019 will retain their Maine Angus papers but will not be able to exhibit/show in the Maine Angus division, however, these animals are eligible to show as MaineTainers. OTHER AMAA UPDATES: Please make sure to update any change in address, phone numbers or e-mails with the AMAA by e-mailing us at maine@amaapc. com, or by logging into your online account. If you have a credit card on file and have received a new card, please make sure to call us to replace the new card on file. Credit cards are not automically saved when paying online.

OBITUARIES LUCILLE SZESTERNIAK FEB. 12, 1952 - DEC. 29, 2019 Lucille “Lucy“ Szesterniak, 67 of Berlin passed away on Sunday December 29, 2019 at the ThedaCare Regional Medical Center, Neenah with loved ones by her side and in prayer. Lucy was born on February 12, 1952 in the City of Berlin, Green Lake County Wisconsin to Edward and Lillian (Hieland) Disterhaft. She attended Berlin High School and was a member at All Saints Catholic Church of Berlin. Lucy loved crocheting and macramé. When she wasn’t busy creating crafts, she enjoyed playing with her cat, and observing airplanes at EAA in Oshkosh. Lucy also enjoyed gardening and spending time with her daughter. She is survived by her daughter

She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends, and her beloved cat Bobber. She was preceded in death by her parents Edward and Lillian Disterhaft, a sister Charlotte Bleskey, and brother in law James Bleskey. Lucille is the mother of AMAA member Annissa Schenning, Orchard Acres, Brandon, Wis.
DAVID LAWRENCE GILGER DEC. 18, 1937 - FEB. 19, 2020 David Lawrence Gilger was born on December 18, 1937 in Brownwood, Texas to Lucille and L.L. “Toot” Gilger and passed away on Wednesday, February, 19, 2020 at his home in San Saba, Texas surrounded by his loving family and friends. The last few years David had struggled in life but never lost his faith or his positive attitude. He was a real inspiration for all of us. David graduated from Brownwood High School and continued his education at Howard Payne University where he met the love of his life, Barbara Owen of San Saba, Texas. They were married on June 18, 1960 at the First United Methodist Church in San Saba. David was a standout football player at Brownwood High School and continued the sport at Howard Payne University where he was Co-Captain of the football team and was greatly respected by his teammates and coaches. David received All-Lone Star Conference and Dallas Morning
News All Texas College Team honors. Therefore, it was only fitting that years later in 2007 he was inducted into the Howard Payne University Sports Hall of Fame. David and Barbara have been the most dedicated fans of sports in San Saba attending almost all events. Even after he was in his wheelchair, he was determined to be there for the Dillos. He was awarded as an Honorary Alumni by the San Saba Alumni by the San Saba Alumni Association. He served several years on the San Saba Independent School Board and was a member of the First United Methodist Church. David and Barbara started their livestock business immediately after their marriage and had a long successful business. David partnered G&F Cattle Company with his longtime friend Calvin Fryar of Brownwood.In 1974 while charter members of the American Maine-Anjou Association of Texas, they were instrumental in bringing the first pureblood MaineAnjou to Texas from England (two bulls and three heifers). David Gilger put new meaning to the word honorable. Truly, his handshake, you could take to the bank. He had a large nucleus of friends that loved and adored him and he has literally taken care of all of them, whether on vacation on the ski slopes or just through the hard valleys of life. To us, he is a Legend! David is survived by his beautiful wife of 59 years, Barbara, their children; Troy and wife Mary Gilger; Kelly and her husband John Reavis; grandchildren; Kolby Reavis, Johna Reavis and husband Dustin Morgan, Morgan Gilger and wife Mahaila, Ember Grant and husband Tim,

TEJLOR STROPE REGION 2 DIRECTOR, NEBRASKA
Hi all!! Many great things have been happening with the American Junior MaineAnjou Association (AJMAA), and we have a ton of exciting things coming up! First of all, I am Tejlor Strope, your Region 2 Director. I grew up in O’Neill, Neb., showing mainly Shorthorn cattle. It wasn’t until later I discovered my true love for the Maine-Anjou breed. It has been amazing getting to know all of the youth and breeders, and I am a true believer in this breed. Currently, I attend the University of Nebraska – Lincoln for Agriculture Education and will graduate in May 2020. My parents are Boyd and MaLaine Strope, and I have a 15-year-old brother Berren, who shares my passion for the Maine-Anjou breed. We have a small herd of Maine-Anjou and Shorthorn cattle and plan to continue to show at state and national shows. Although some of us are still recovering from Denver, it was a great one for Maine-
Anjou breeders and exhibitors. The show on the hill hit a high for entries and quality, and the Pen show was full of quality cattle once again. The cattle were great this year, but the people and exhibitors were even better. Thank you to all of the supporters who attended the Bright Lights Maine-Anjou Sale on Saturday. We look forward to seeing you at Junior Nationals this Summer in Lima, Ohio June 28th to July 4th. What am I most excited to tell you about? We are officially bringing back the National Youth Leadership Conference (NYLC). This isn’t going to be your normal youth conference. NYLC will offer a range of leadership, industry, and of course some very special evening events you won’t want to miss. This year, it will be held in Kansas City, Mo., and is available to ages 14-22, May 31st through June 3rd. We are eager to see you there!

The only acceptable samples are hair cards, blood cards and TSUs. They must be uniquely barcoded. If you need to order sampling supplies, you can visit the Neogen website or contact Paige Jones at paige@ amaapc.com. The AMAA testing process is as follows: 1. Any animal being tested must have a number created within Digital Beef. Bulls and suspect heifers will have a performance number. AI sires and donor dams must be registered, have their foreign pedigree added or have a commercial number created to order testing. 2. After logging into Digital Beef and viewing your herd, find the animal that needs testing and check the box for DNA. If you have more than one animal to test, be sure to check the box for all the animals that need testing.

3. On the left side of the screen, select DNA. All of the animals you selected in the previous step should appear in this list. 4. For each animal, select the reason for testing. 5. The ONLY acceptable samples are hair cards, blood cards or TSUs. You will enter the unique barcode on the sample card or TSU in the designated box. 6. Select the sample type. 7. Next, select the tests you would like to order. 8. If you are testing for parent verification, you can enter the alternative sire’s registration number in the designated box. 9. Please leave any notes you would like the AMAA DNA department or Neogen to be aware of. 10. After clicking save, your DNA test request will be sent to the AMAA and a PDF will be created for you to print and mail with your samples. Your account will show the balance due for the testing. Please pay this balance as soon as possible as we do not send testing results until we receive payment. AI SIRE SELECTION... A VERY IMPORTANT DECISION by Jake Scott, Krebs Ranch, Gordon, Neb.
AI sire selection is without question one of the most important decisions a breeder will make over the course of a year. Sire selection directly impacts the value of your next calf crop, and continues to influence your cowherd for years to come via the replacement females kept from the chosen sires. With so much riding on that decision, AI sire selection has become a full-time, year round job at Krebs Ranch. Countless hours and numerous miles are devoted MARCH/APRIL 2020

to researching, evaluating and identifying new genetics that can be added to their program. Krebs views the process as an investment rather than an expense which, when done correctly, will pay dividends for them and for their customers. Krebs determines the value of an AI sire by evaluating three key areas. The first is visual appraisal or phenotype. The Krebs program is built on a foundation of genetics with superior eye appeal
and quality. Bull selection begins with choosing sires that will continue that tradition. However, the importance of correct phenotype goes far beyond good looks. Correct phenotype is vital to the functionality and profitability of the cattle they produce. The bulls they market often work in breeding pastures that are a section or larger in size, so, structural correctness in an absolute necessity. If a bull’s feet and leg structure limits his
ability to travel and service cows in this environment, nothing else really matters. Fertility is equally important, so testicle size and shape is also a large component of the phenotype equation. Once the standards of structure and fertility are met, Krebs’ selects bulls with superior growth performance, muscle thickness and body volume. They expect sires to be fault free in their design and correct in their pattern with an added look of style and class. This emphasis on eye appeal benefits their customers as the vast majority of them market sell their calves by live auction or video…where buyers make their decisions based on visual appraisal. Cattle with more length, thickness, and good ol’ fashion eye appeal stick out from the crowd and create competitive bidding among buyers. The second criteria considered is the sire’s pedigree. Outcross genetics are a must at Krebs Ranch. They mate large groups of cows to a comparatively small number of AI sires. For example, once an AI sire is identified, 50-75 cows will be mated to the sire. Limiting the overall number of AI sires used in a given year creates an increase in the uniformity and consistency of the resulting calf crop while giving their customers large sire groups of ½ brothers to choose from in their bull sales. Just as importantly, having large groups of ½ sisters in the cowherd creates an increase in the consistency and predictability of production they receive from their females. And since Krebs Ranch isn’t a proponent of inbreeding or linebreeding, this philosophy, demands an annual influx of outcross genetics that are unique and different from those already at work in the program. This strategy utilizes the newest AI sires of the breed which provides the Krebs program with the most current bloodlines available and delivers the genetic diversity they’re seeking. The use of outcross sires is also an excellent risk management tool that prevents any unknown recessive genetic defects from unintentionally appearing. The third criteria evaluated is EPDs. The EPD profile of an AI sire is valuable to Krebs Ranch in two ways. It first gives them a reasonable prediction of what to expect in terms of calving ease, growth performance, fertility and potential carcass
value. With EPDs, the more data that’s available within a respective breed, the more useful and accurate EPDs become in predicting results. While it’s never perfect, it’s still a great tool that helps registered and commercial producers alike take some of the guess work out of sire selection and gives breeders the ability to make informed decisions. EPDs also help in the marketing of cattle at Krebs Ranch. While they’re not a “numbers only” program, they are very proud that the EPD data on their cattle rank in the very top of the entire Angus breed. While they have some customers who place heavy emphasis on EPDs when making purchases, for most, EPDs are simply a set of credentials that they want to see in the cattle. It’s a means of validation that sets our customer’s minds at ease and gives them greater confidence in their purchase. They tend to look at EPDs in broad, general terms and want to see that our cattle are consistently ranking at the top of the breed. Having superior EPDs definitely helps to attract a larger base of customers who are willing to pay a premium for cattle that have superior data. But cattle that combine superior EPDs with superior phenotype are without a doubt the most valuable and most sought after cattle they produce. Another topic that merits discussion is the selection of AI sires is the use of younger “unproven” sires verses older more “proven” sires. Krebs Ranch believes that there is a place for both. In their registered cow herd, they strongly believe in using young sires. For Krebs, the rewards far outweigh any risks. In the Angus world, a large number of producers are using the exact same AI sires. While many of the sires are considered “proven”, their influence has flooded the breed with large numbers of cattle with nearly identical pedigrees. Over time, this practice narrows a breeds gene pool and reduces the amount of genetic diversity available to other breeders. It becomes difficult to find an AI sire that is bred differently than what you already have in your herd. Krebs believes it’s better to be on the front end of a new line of genetics, so, they push the envelope to identify and use new cutting edge sires with the goal of being the first to come to market
with the next generation of genetics. This is a strategy that has served them well, as three of their last four bull sales have been topped by sons of “unproven sires”. Those sons sold for $55,000, $50,000 and $120,000. However, when it comes to selling semen for use in commercial herds, Krebs in fact encourages the use of their proven AI sires. For example, if a customer has 100 heifers to AI, our program prefers they use a sire that has already been proven in their registered herd… so that there are no surprises. Krebs believes it is the job of the seedstock producers, like them, to take any risk’s involved in proving the strengths of a young bull. Once they have proven those genetics in their own herd, they can then accurately recommend those genetics in their customers herds. In short, AI sire selection is a serious decision that should be done with discipline, research and careful thought. Using a balanced selection method that includes visual appraisal, genetics and EPDs will ensure you’re choosing bulls that will add quality and value to your cattle, your customer’s cattle, and to the genepool of your entire breed. Krebs Ranch is a purebred Angus ranch located in the Sandhills of Nebraska. They sell 400 bulls through their annual bull sale. Krebs Ranch markets semen on 15 Angus AI sires to both registered and commercial ranches. They use AI extensively in their fall and spring calving programs. 75% of the semen used comes from bulls owned within the Krebs program and 25% of the semen is purchased from bulls owned by fellow breeders and AI studs. Jake Scott leads the ranches marketing efforts and describes the method they use in selecting new AI sires.
