The Maine-Angus program is a initiative created by the American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) to showcase the complementation of Maine-Anjou genetics when crossed with Angus or Red Angus cattle. This program will reveal Maine-Anjou cattle’s ability to enhance feed efficiency and red meat yield when placed on British based genetics. This program should provide seedstock that will increase production and carcass yield through heterosis. The name Maine Angus is both strong and informative by stating exactly what breeds are present in said animal. The standard is both parents must be registered at the AMAA, American Angus Association (AAA) or Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) will provide validated lineage and genetic information along with valuable EPDs. Through a partnership with the AAA our EPDs will be updated with the latest genetic evaluation by the AAA which will provide the breeders and customers the best genetic prediction available. This program is focused on producing quality registered offspring that will aid in the incorporation of Maine-Anjou
genetics into the mainstream of the USA beef sector. PROGRAM STANDARDS • Maine Angus refers to cattle with the following characteristics: • The animal will have between 3/8 Maine-Anjou to 5/8 MaineAnjou blood and have between 3/8 registered Angus to 5/8 registered Angus and/or registered Red Angus blood. • The standard is both parents must be registered at the AMAA, American Angus Association (AAA) or Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) will provide validated lineage. • Qualifying cattle can have no more than 1/8 of non-registered blood or other breeds. • A registered Maine Angus bull must be proven free of genetic defects PHA and TH. Depending on the Maine Angus bull’s genetic makeup, the individual must also be proven free of known Angus lethal genetic defects (Ex. AM, NH and CA) and/or known lethal Red Angus genetic defects (Ex. AM, NH, CA
and OS) whether determined by pedigree or test. • A registered Maine Angus female must be proven free of PHA and TH, whether identified by pedigree or test. MAINE ANGUS COLOR STANDARDS • All qualifying individuals will be predominately solid black or red in color. White markings are only allowed on the underline and switch of the tail. • Starting Jan. 1, 2019 - All animals that have qualified and registered as Maine Angus prior to Jan. 1, 2019 will retain their Maine Angus papers but will not be able to exhibit/show in the Maine Angus division, however, these animals are eligible to show as MaineTainers.

Greetings, I don’t know about you, but I am anxiously looking forward to spring and warmer weather! This year has started off strong for Maine-Anjou with a great showing at the National Western in Denver, Colo. Highlights from the 2019 exhibition are increased entries in the hill show, higher sale prices/ averages in the Bright Lights Sale and more interest and visibility for Maine-Anjou as a whole. The sale and show had many spectators and many onlookers from outside the breed. This type of energy reminds us of how important it is to stay diligent in our pursuits and work for the future of this great breed. Another update that we are glad to have in place is the updated EPDs from Angus Genetics Inc., (AGI). I would encourage all of you to look at your animal’s new EPDs. There was not a major change in the breed averages for specific traits, but there were some individuals that made substantial swings in both positive and negative values. The implementation of genomic information incorporated to genetic evaluation is a step in the right direction. Why you might ask? I believe that the more predictive information and more weights and measurements included, the closer we become in being able to more accurately identify the genetic capabilities of an animal and their offspring. I always want to emphasize that I believe EPDs are one of the many tools that are to be utilized as part of a selection method in cattle. It is up to you, as a producer, in how much you would like to use them in your operation. I am a staunch believer that there is no substitute for visual evaluation of an animal’s confirmation in the selection process, but I also strongly believe that the information in hand will help me make the best decision I can.
Breeds that have a sizable representation in the commercial bull market have heavily implemented the use of EPDs and genomics to improve predictability and more quickly identify those that need to be influencing the genepools within their breeds and for their customers operations. The fact that our current EPDs have more data infused into their calculations improves their accuracy and we continue to make strides in providing the tools needed for your’s and your customer’s success. This time of the year is always exciting for me with the new calf crop hitting the ground, the next generation of animals being sold and marketed and the promise of green grass. The future is bright for Maine-Anjou, but we all must continue to put in the work and efforts to moving forward. Even though we have seen an influx of new interest, we still have to be progressive in our planning so that we can reap the rewards. The AMAA staff is committed to helping you reach your goals and bring more value to Maine-Anjou cattle. I challenge myself every day to grow as a person and to work towards goals that I have set for our breed. I know that many of you do this as well for your operation and I just want to say Thank You!! I would also like to remind you to check out the AMAA Maine Max Bull Test Sale that will be online via DV Auctions on March 28th, 2019. This is a great set of bulls from some of the top Maine-Anjou programs in the United States. The bulls will be backed by gain and performance records as well as ultrasound data. If you have any questions or we can assist you or your customers in any way please let us know! Best regards, Blake

It seems like after Christmas things kick into high gear for the ag community, especially in the beef production business. This January and February have been extra busy. Many are fighting the weather and continuing to work on cleaning things up from the wet Fall we had in the northern part of the U.S. Between tending to laboring heifers and cows and newborn calves, we are trying to search out and secure this year’s AI breeding choices. That means running from bull sale to bull sale trying to re-up the bull battery for the upcoming breeding season. A momentary reflection and take away from the 2019 Brights Lights Sale shows that interest in the Maine-Anjou breed has renewed vigor. With an increased sale average, hype for many upcoming new bulls that will be collected this spring is rather high. What is always intriguing at this time is what is going to be the “big picture” buying point everyone is after in their bull selection. It typically ranges from selection of low birth weight and calving ease sires to cow bulls that will pack a punch and deliver 1,500 pound fed cattle. With that, there are some things to think about during this buying season and new boxes to put on your bull procurement check list. With the new release of Angus Genetics Inc., (AGI) single step EPDs we can now see a true spread in our EPDs and the difference in calving ease and growth are now more evident and rewarded. The other thing that will come into play this bull buying year is the first of yearling Maine Angus
bulls. We are already seeing the impact of the inclusion of good numbered Angus cattle into our breed with the resulting EPD spreads from Birth to Yearling and the increase in Milk and Marbling figures. Bull buyers in the ccommercial beef business have plenty of breed options every spring to bull up. That why it’s important to market to them and what they are after. Rugged, heavy, fast growing cattle are always in demand especially with a palatable and progressive genetic profile. We are on our third year of the Maine Max Bull Sale, and we’re seeing a difference in the cattle that are reaching that particular sale. This year will highlight two groups of bulls. A group of Maine Angus bulls and a group of High/Purebred bulls. The quality is up and so are the weights and frames. As the bull buying season continues, stay cognizant of what cattle are selling and what they are selling for. It’s always interesting to watch the trend. Pay close attention to the popular sire groups. As you make your Angus sire selection(s) for the addition of Maine Angus cattle into your own program, take the time to look at the how those EPDs are going to affect future generations. There are plenty of Angus cattle that have the look of quality that still come with an easily applicable genetic pedigree bred into them. The bottom line is the beef business is derived from the sale of commercial feeder calves. The principles of weight and growth make the difference in driving a profit and keeping your bull buyers happy!

INTRODUCING
A Special thanks to Lautner Farms and Korky Wise for purchasing One-Half interest in Icon…
the Highest Valued Maine Bull in recent history!!!
DUEL
TAKEN 12/1/18
TAKEN 1/19/19
802F HOW DO YOU BEGIN TO EXPLIAN SOMETHING THAT UNTIL NOW YOU HAVE ONLY IMAGINED!!! This is how strongly we feel about this great young bull. The pictures are awesome, the video is great and even more reveling but when you see him in real life…HE IS CAPTIVATING. Icon, took Denver 2019 by storm being described by many as “The most complete, highest quality multipurpose Sire to come on the scene in A LONG TIME…MABE EVER. He is a breath of fresh air… A Three Quarter Maine with as much balance, smoothness, structural quality, mobility and profile as you will find in a stout made, square built, heavy muscled, clean designed, up headed, perfect footed, clean jointed, good haired baldy of any breed or cross. He is from the first calf crop out of BOE Epic. The first 10 Epic daughters sold this Fall at Buck Cattle Company averaged $34,610 with two head over the $100,000 mark. Icon is backed a proven maternal Maine Anjou pedigree that is hard to beat…The first six cows on the bottom side of his pedigree are ALL GREAT FEMALES dating back to the 1990 National Champion Maine, Sweet Cheeks. We feel like he is sure to be the NEXT GO TO SIRE to generate those highly sought after High Maine, Maintianer and Maine-Angus show heifers. As important, his contribution to the club calf and composite female industry will be dramatic…And he will sire show steers as well.
the first semen will be sold online when available. semen can be purchased from the owners and major distributors BRED BY:

AMAA DNA rules and regulations
All bulls born after January 1, 2014 must be TH and PHA free by test or pedigree in order to register. If a bull is found to be a carrier, he can register as a foundation or performance bull only, but all progeny will have to test free of that defect in order to register. Foundation bulls will carry their Maine-Anjou percentage to their offspring. All AI sires, regardless of breed and/or commercial, must have DNA, TH and PHA on file prior to registering any progeny. Maine Angus bulls must be TH and PHA free as well as AM, NH and CA free for black Angus and AM, NH, CA and OS free for Red Angus.
Females • • •
Carrier heifers out of carrier bulls born after January 1, 2014 can only be registered as foundation or performance only. Foundation carriers will carry their Maine-Anjou percentage to their offspring, but their offsprings must test free of that defect. All donor dams must have DNA, TH and PHA on file prior to registering their ET calves. If a donor is dead before a sample was procured, you must DNA, TH and PHA test all ET calves in order to register them. Maine Angus heifers must be TH and PHA free.
new in 2019 DNA process updates We will be adjusting the DNA testing process beginning in January 2019 in hopes of making this a quicker and easier process. This only changes the testing process through GeneSeek. We will still accept results from other labs. The new process is as follows: 1. Any animal being tested must have a number created within Digital Beef. Bulls and suspect heifers will have a performance number. AI sires and donor dams must be registered, have their foreign pedigree added or have a commercial number created to order testing. 2. After logging into Digital Beef and viewing your herd, find the animal that needs testing and check the box for DNA. If you have more than one animal to test, be sure to check the box for all the animals that need testing.
3. On the left side of the screen, select DNA. All of the animals you selected in the previous step should appear in this list. 4. For each animal, select the reason for testing. 5. If you use a hair card, blood card , TSU vial, etc., enter that unique barcode in the designated box. If you are not using one of those sample types, leave the box black, and GeneSeek will assign a barcode when the sample at arrives at the lab. Samples without unique barcodes must be properly labeled. 6. Select the sample type.
7. Next, select the tests you would like to order. 8. If you are testing for parent verification, you can enter the alternative sire’s registration number in the designated box. 9. Please leave any notes you would like the AMAA DNA department or GeneSeek to be aware of.
10. After clicking save, your DNA test request will be sent to the AMAA, and your account will be charged for the testing. You may then mail your samples to GeneSeek Inc., Attn: Samples, 4131 North 48th St., Lincoln, NE 68504-1408.

MAINE-ANJOU Announcements, News & Events
DELINQUENT MAPP INVENTORIES: Those members participating in the herd reporting program that did NOT return a MAPP inventory should have received an invoice in the mail for all active cows. Please make sure to pay this invoice as soon as possible to avoid finance charges. No invoice adjustments will be made and all balances are expected to be paid. MAPP ENROLLMENT INSTRUCTIONS: MAPP enrollment may be completed online by following the steps below. • Log into your online account. If you have forgotten your password please email us at maine@amaapc.com. • Select “MAPP” on the left side tool bar • Click on the “Assessment-Age” tab • Click “Assess for 2019” on the left side if your cow will calf in 2019 • If you have a calf out of a disposed animal, enroll the animal first and then dispose of the cow. Dispose will cancel that animal from your inventory. • Keep donor dams active and enroll them each year. • No Action is required for an animal that will not calve in 2019 so do not dispose of it. You will continue to the next animal to enroll. • Do Not select “Complete Yearly MAPP Process –Assess all for
MARCH/APRIL 2019
48
2019” unless you are enrolling all animals listed. • The “Optional Females” tab will list those that are too young to breed but maybe enrolled if they have been bred. • Commercial animals and animals of another breed will not be listed on your inventory. These types of animals are exempt from enrollment. • Do not forget to add your 2019 dues to your total before checking out. If you wish to have your MAPP inventory mailed to you, please contact Donna Grame at 816-4319950 or e-mail your request to donna@amaapc.com. Your 2019 dues must be paid to remain in the program. AMAA DUES: All members should have received a dues reminder in the mail. Your 2018 dues must be paid in order to register or transfer animals. You may pay your dues by logging into your online account or by mailing in the reminder card with a check. REGISTRATIONS: Please dispose of any old registration and self-billing worksheets. The AMAA will no longer offer a 10% online discount for registration work that is completed through Digital Beef. The AMAA will assess a $5 fee for any registration work received by fax, e-mail or by mail. To avoid this fee, please log into your online
Digital Beef account to complete all registration work. New forms are included in this issue and can also be downloaded from our main webpage under Digital Beef/ Registrations – Printable Forms. If you need assistance logging into your online account please contact us at maine@amaapc.com. If work is faxed or e-mailed it is the responsibility of the breeder to give us a follow up phone call to make sure that the work is legible and to cover all fees. BLOCK REGISTRATION DISCOUNTS: Want to save on registration costs? Consider pre-paying for a block of registrations. The cost savings are as follows: • 15 head - 12% • 25 head - 15% • 50 head - 20% • 75 head - 25% • 100 head - 30% Block may only be used on animals under 13 months of age and may not be used on steers or foundation animals. Blocks will only be valid from January 1 - December 31 of each year. Any unused block registration numbers will expire. If you are interested in learning more about block purchases, please contact us at 816-431-9950. RUSH ORDERS: If you are selling an animal, we ask that you register and transfer the animal in a timely manner to avoid extra charges and to assure buyers they are purchasing from a reputable business person.
Rushes will be done in the order received; a rush fee is currently $50 (covers eight head). No work will be released until payment is complete. Rush work is processed ahead of the regular work that is received in our office and mailed by regular mail within one to two business days. We will do our best to complete rush work that is received in our office by 2 p.m. (Monday – Friday). There is no same-day turnaround. If requiring a registration number only, it will still be considered a rush as we still have to process the work to obtain the number. HELPFUL TIPS WHEN REGISTERING: To avoid delays in your registration work during our busy season follow the tips below. Double check that all blanks and information are correct and complete before mailing or submitting online. Things most commonly missed are: o Missing herd prefix and herd ID o Birthdates o Date of sale o Name of animal o Payment Make sure the person that is registering the animal owns the dam with the exception of ET calves. If an ET calf, make sure the donor dam has been DNA, PHA & TH tested and that we have the results on file. If you are checking on work please e-mail us at paige@amaapc.com. When calling or e-mailing please have the name and breeder number of the person submitting the work. When registering annual active
dams for performance only animals please submit them online if you have the capabilities. This will help the registrar processing tremendously. We appreciate you and your business and want to make sure that the registration process runs as smooth as possible. Thank you in advance for your extra time in making sure all work is correct, complete and received in a timely manner. REGISTRATIONS FOR UPCOMING SHOWS: It is now time to register show animals for fall and winter shows. Please keep in mind during the show season you will need to allow at least two to three weeks for turn-around on registrations and transfers sent in to our office. If a paper is needed within that time, a rush fee ($50 per eight head) will be required before the work will be completed. BULL CALF REGISTRATION: If registering a bull calf born after Jan. 1, 2014, it must be TH/PHA free by parentage or have testing completed prior to registering and on file with the AMAA. Carriers will no longer be registered, but may be entered as a foundation animal. All progeny out of a Foundation carrier bull needs to be tested free of that defect prior to registration. If registrations are submitted before testing has been completed, the animal will not be registered. Instead, the animal will be given a performance number at a non-
refundable penalty charge of $10. Once the animal has been tested the registration may be completed at the regular rate. Please plan accordingly as testing can take up to three-four weeks. FOUNDATION ANIMALS: Non-registered bulls and females must be entered as a foundation animal prior to MaineTainer progeny being registered. All current “P” (performance only) cattle will be grand-fathered into the program. If the sire is an AI sire and registered at another breed association, the pedigree and testing must be on file with the AMAA. The charge to add a sire pedigree will be a onetime charge of $40. If the AMAA finds that the pedigree has already been paid for by another breeder, the $40 charge will not be applied. Dams registered at another breed association may also be added for a one-time charge of $25. See the new self-billing sheet for foundation fees. ONLINE TRANSFERS: When transferring an animal on line make sure there is not a member number already created for the buyer. Creating more than one number for an individual creates registration problems later. If you find the buyer in the system at a different address please notify the buyer first to confirm the address and then notify the Maine office to update the account. It is always a good idea to always search for the buyer using the search tools before doing the work that way if they have a different

address it is caught before entering the registration and transfer. When creating a new profile for a buyer please make sure to never give a junior a farm name. Please enter the junior’s name on the farm line and also as the contact.
DNA, TH AND PHA REQUIREMENTS: Prior to registering any ET calves, all donor dams (including commercial or non-registered dams) must have DNA, TH and PHA on file in our office. Also, all AI sires are required to have the same on file. Therefore, our office will hold any ET registrations submitted out of dams without testing on file as well as all registrations out of AI sires that do not have complete testing on file. If the donor dam is deceased and not tested, we do require that the ET(s) have the tests done, in the absence of the donor’s records. The DNA, TH and PHA testing can be done at GeneSeek. A submission form is found on our Web site, maine-anjou.org. Maine-Anjou samples are put into testing at GeneSeek on Wednesdays, please plan accordingly when submitting. DNA results will be back in the AMAA office late the next week after the testing begins; TH and PHA results will be in our office two weeks later, usually on a Thursday. We would like to start sending the test results by e-mail only, please make sure we have an up-to-date e-mail address for you, if applicable.

MAINE/ANGUS PAPERS: If you wish to obtain a Maine/ Angus registration select the MA/ Angus box when registering on line. You will receive an error that AMAA staff must check the testing and percentage requirements so please make sure to validate your entry to save it so that that AMAA can check the entry. If you submit a registration on paper, please put Maine/Angus in the comment section of the application. If the animal does not qualify as a Maine/Angus it will be recoded as a regular Mainetainer. A Maine/Angus paper will be blue in color, have Maine/Angus under the Maine Logo, and will have MaineTainer across the center of the paper. The animal can be shown as a MaineTainer or Maine Angus. Requirements: *Off spring must be 3/8 - 5/8 to qualify. *Bulls and Heifers must be TH/ PHA free by parents or by test *Bulls must be NH, CA and AM free by parents or free by test. Angus pedigrees will not be assumed free of these defects. Bulls must be clean of DS if out of a Red Angus. *Angus percentages will only be counted from actual registered Angus. Commercial Angus percentages will not be used in the Maine/Angus equation. NEW MEMBERS: All new members must choose a program when submitting a new membership. The two programs that are offered are MAPP and
Breeders Choice. More information on these two programs is available by visiting maine-anjou.org and clicking on “Member Services” “MAPP Agreement.” If a membership is submitted without choosing a program, the new member will be placed in the Breeders Choice program.
OTHER AMAA UPDATES: Please make sure to update any change in address, phone numbers or e-mails with the AMAA by e-mailing us at maine@amaapc. com, or by logging into your online account. If you have a credit card on file and have received a new card, please make sure to call us to replace the new card on file. Credit cards are not automically saved when paying online. MAINE-ANJOU CATTLE FOR SALE: Looking for cattle to purchase or consign? Do not forget to check out our consignment sale list located at the top of the Digital Beef Cattle search screen called “Maine-Anjou Cattle for Sale”. Active Breeders may use this tool at any time to consign animals as long as you have a login for Digital Beef.
