AMAA
Headquarters Holiday Greetings, I hope that all of you have survived the floods of 2018 and are settled in for the winter. This fall sale season has revealed a strong demand for both high Maine-Anjou genetics as well as an increase of Maine Angus cattle being marketed. The interest for quality cattle is very strong in all phases of the cattle industry. Our fall shows have been well attended and the cattle have been extremely impressive! You as breeders have brought these cattle full circle in what they can offer the beef industry. Selection pressure, calving ease and quality grade have created a deficit in some key traits to beef production. Fortunately MaineAnjou is strong in the weak areas.
M. Blake Nelson, Executive Vice President
So Why Maine-Anjou? Remember our key selling points: - Feed Efficiency - Red Meat Enhancement/Muscle - Calm Disposition - Moderate Mature Size - Black Hided These are just some of the major traits that we can help cattle herds with. I believe that we have made, and currently are making, a lot of steps in the right direction to enhance the brand of MaineAnjou. Our opinion of the cattle can only carry so much weight with most of today’s cattlemen.

We need to have quality third party information and scientific proof to market our product to commercial producers. The Maine Max Bull Test, the new AGI genetic evaluation and you as breeders sending in every weight or measurement that you can will help us tell our story. Our MAPP (Maine-Anjou Performance Program) is a vital part in your reporting of data and our primary source of information to build EPDs, so please consider including your herd in this progressive program (No herd is too small, your data has value!). I think having this type of information in black and white will help our selling points and improve our credibility. As Maine-Anjou enthusiasts we understand what our cattle can provide and we have to take every chance to educate cattlemen about the Maine-Anjou of today! I would like to remind all of you about the great sales that will be taking place at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colo. On January 19, 2019, the Bright Lights sale is full of tremendous herd sire prospects and a select group of females. Please check these out and if you need a catalog or assistance, give us a call. Thank you for a great year at AMAA and we wish for all of you to have a happy and blessed Christmas and New Year!

Josh Cribbs, Commercial Development Director Forecasting the market and its trends is always a challenging issue. It would seem we are entering a time that will be driven by many factors, it will certainly take some creative thinking on the side of beef producers, not only to survive, but also to protect the already shrinking margin due to increase input costs and shortage of resources. According to BEEF® Magazine, heifer retention the past two years will have a significant impact on placement of feeder calves in the yard and a flood of the market. As always with an increase in supply, demand will NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018

Commercial Connection lower and in turn drive feeder calf prices downward. Although the market has held strong in some regions of the US, we certainly cannot get to comfortable due to such high re-population rates of females. Increased input volatility and extreme weather impact over the last year certainly are causes for concern. We are sitting in a place where staying focused on a breeding strategy is extremely important. So, for seedstock producers, what does that mean? First off, seedstock breeders – like commercial producers – are trying to drive income and build some solidity into their margins. If you raise or feed Maine cattle, you are in a place that is much better than most; the reasons why are enough to drive interest in the breed. Over the last two years, we have been able to secure data on fed progeny that lend to significant things that help with income. The first is that Maine sired cattle have tremendous feed-togain data that can be labeled as more efficient that most cattle in the yard. The reason that we see those significant numbers is because of the muscle we can lay on carcasses at a level that is unmatched in the industry. When converting feed-to-gain, added muscle helps with increased efficiency. Although some believe profit in the industry is in quality grade and those premiums awarded for high marbling carcasses, there is more than one way to garner profit. Lean, high yielding carcasses that reached a terminal weight at fewer days on feed and
do not see Yield Grade discounts are just as profitable. The other impact that we need to proactively promote is moderation and cow docility. It’s a proven fact that “quieter” cattle are more efficient in converting resources to gain. In fact, in the feedlot industry high stress/high strung cattle most times never reach an acceptable end point – lead to carcass defects and dark cutters. All of which is loss profit and in a tight market that’s a loss that isn’t sustainable. We all know that attitude passes from cow to calf easily. If cow docility leads to feeder docility, the effects on health and long-term profitability are tremendous. On the other hand, we have faced a growing push to increase weaning and yearling weight. The industry around us has pushed their genetic data and how it reads on paper to read as progressive as possible. I think we’re all for growth, but at some point paying attention to available resources is extremely important to sustainability. Making sure the herd doesn’t out milk their environment, maintaining “Key Cow Efficiency” is what we offer as a breed. We are in a fight to promote our breed against others. With shrinking margins and growing inputs, things like, increased feedto-gain equaling shorter days on feed, docility lending to that feedto-gain, and key cow efficiency for staying within the parameters of the environment available are our answers to carving out market share. Maine-Anjou, for the modern producer!

Announcements, News & Events NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS
The 2019 MAPP enrollment is now open. MAPP members must complete enrollment no later than Friday, Dec. 14, 2018. MAPP enrollment may be completed online by following the steps below. • Log into your online account. If you have forgotten your password please email us at maine@amaapc.com. • Select “MAPP” on the left side tool bar. • Click on the “Assessment-Age” tab. • Click “Assess for 2019” on the left side if your cow will calve in 2019. • If you have a calf out of a disposed animal, enroll the animal first and then dispose of the cow. Dispose will cancel that animal from your inventory. • Keep donor dams active and enroll them each year. • No Action is required for an animal that will not calve in 2019 so do not dispose of it. You will continue to the next animal to enroll. • Do Not select “Complete Yearly MAPP Process – Assess all for 2019” unless you are enrolling all animals listed. • The “Optional Females” tab will list those that are too young to breed but maybe enrolled if they have been bred. • Commercial animals and animals of another breed will not be listed on your inventory. These types of animals are exempt from enrollment. • Do not forget to add your 2019 dues to your total before checking out.
If you wish to have your MAPP inventory mailed to you, please contact Donna Grame at 816-4319950 or e-mail your request to donna@amaapc.com. Your 2019 dues must also be paid by Jan. 1, 2019 in order to remain in the program. All members should have received a dues reminder in the mail. Your 2018 dues must be paid in order to register or transfer animals. You may pay your dues by logging into your online account or by mailing in the reminder card with a check.
REGISTRATIONS
Please dispose of any old registration and self-billing worksheets. The AMAA will no longer offer a 10% online discount for registration work that is completed through Digital Beef. The AMAA will assess a $5 fee for any registration work received by fax, e-mail or by mail. To avoid this fee, please log into your online Digital Beef account to complete all registration work. New forms can be downloaded from our main webpage under Digital Beef/ Registrations – Printable Forms. If you need assistance logging into your online account please contact us at maine@amaapc.com. If work is faxed or e-mailed it is the responsibility of the breeder to give us a follow up phone call to make sure that the work is legible and to cover all fees.
BLOCK REGISTRATION DISCOUNTS Want to save on registration costs? Consider pre-paying for a block of registrations. The cost savings are as follows:
• 15 head - 12% • 25 head - 15% • 50 head - 20% • 75 head - 25% • 100 head - 30% Block registrations may only be used on animals under 13 months of age and may not be used on steers or foundation animals. Blocks are valid from January 1 - December 31 of each year. Any unused block registration numbers will expire. If you are interested in learning more about block purchases, please contact us at 816-431-9950.
RUSH ORDERS
If you are selling an animal, we ask that you register and transfer the animal in a timely manner to avoid extra charges and to assure buyers they are purchasing from a reputable business person. Rushes will be done in the order received; a rush fee is currently $50 (covers eight head). No work will be released until payment is complete. Rush work is processed ahead of the regular work that is received in our office and mailed by regular mail within one to two business days. We will do our best to complete rush work that is received in our office by 2 p.m. (Monday – Friday). There is no same-day turnaround. If requiring a registration number only, it will still be considered a rush as we still have to process the work to obtain the number.
HELPFUL TIPS WHEN REGISTERING To avoid delays in your registration work during our busy season follow the tips below.
Double check that all blanks and information are correct and complete before mailing or submitting online. Things most commonly missed are: o Missing herd prefix and herd ID o Birthdates o Date of sale o Name of animal o Payment Make sure the person that is registering the animal owns the dam with the exception of ET calves. If an ET calf, make sure the donor dam has been DNA, PHA & TH tested and that we have the results on file. If you are checking on work please e-mail us at paige@amaapc.com. When calling or e-mailing please have the name and breeder number of the person submitting the work. When registering annual active dams for performance only animals please submit them online if you have the capabilities. This will help the registrar processing tremendously. We appreciate you and your business and want to make sure that the registration process runs as smooth as possible. Thank you in advance for your extra time in making sure all work is correct, complete and received in a timely manner.
REGISTRATIONS FOR UPCOMING SHOWS
It is now time to register show animals for fall and winter shows. Please keep in mind during the show season you will need to allow at least two to three weeks for turn-around on registrations and transfers sent in to our office. If a
paper is needed within that time, a rush fee ($50 per eight head) will be required before the work will be completed.
BULL CALF REGISTRATION
If registering a bull calf born after Jan. 1, 2014, it must be TH/PHA free by parentage or have testing completed prior to registering and on file with the AMAA. Carriers will no longer be registered, but may be entered as a foundation animal. All progeny out of a Foundation carrier bull needs to be tested free of that defect prior to registration. If registrations are submitted before testing has been completed, the animal will not be registered. Instead, the animal will be given a performance number at a nonrefundable penalty charge of $10. Once the animal has been tested the registration may be completed at the regular rate. Please plan accordingly as testing can take up to three-four weeks.
FOUNDATION ANIMALS
Non-registered bulls and females must be entered as a foundation animal prior to MaineTainer progeny being registered. All current “P” (performance only) cattle will be grand-fathered into the program. If the sire is an AI sire and registered at another breed association, the pedigree and testing must be on file with the AMAA. The charge to add a sire pedigree will be a one-time charge of $40. If the AMAA finds that the pedigree has already been paid for by another breeder, the $40 charge will not be applied. NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018

MAINE-ANJOU ASSOCIATION TO CELEBRATE 50 YEARS
2019 will mark 50 years of existence for the American MaineAnjou Association (AMAA). Watch for details pertaining to events to celebrate our history and the Maine-Anjou breed.
When transferring an animal online make sure there is not a member number already created for the buyer. Creating more than one number for an individual creates registration problems later. If you find the buyer in the system at a different address please notify the buyer first to confirm the address and then notify the Maine office to update the account. It is always a good idea to always search for the buyer using the search tools before doing the work, that way if they have a different address it is caught before entering the registration and transfer. When creating a new profile for a buyer please make sure to never give a junior a farm name. Please enter the junior’s name on the farm line and also as the contact.
DNA, TH AND PHA REQUIREMENTS Prior to registering any ET calves, all donor dams (including commercial or non-registered dams) must have DNA, TH and PHA on file in our office. Also, all AI sires are required to have the same on file. Therefore, our office will hold any ET registrations submitted out of dams without testing on file as well as all registrations out of AI sires that do not have complete testing on file. If the donor dam is deceased and not tested, we do require that the

ET(s) have the tests done, in the absence of the donor’s records. The DNA, TH and PHA testing can be done at GeneSeek. A submission form is found on our Web site, maine-anjou.org. Maine-Anjou samples are put into testing at GeneSeek on Wednesdays, please plan accordingly when submitting. DNA results will be back in the AMAA office late the next week after the testing begins; TH and PHA results will be in our office two weeks later, usually on a Thursday. We would like to start sending the test results by e-mail only, please make sure we have an up-todate e-mail address for you, if applicable.
MAINE/ANGUS PAPERS
If you wish to obtain a Maine/ Angus registration select the MA/Angus box when registering online. You will receive an error that AMAA staff must check the testing and percentage requirements so please make sure to validate your entry to save it so that that AMAA can check the entry. If you submit a registration on paper, please put Maine Angus in the comment section of the application. If the animal does not qualify as a Maine Angus it will be recoded as a regular MaineTainer. A Maine Angus paper will be blue in color, have Maine Angus under the Maine logo, and will have MaineTainer across the center of the paper. The animal can be shown as a MaineTainer or Maine Angus. Requirements: *Off spring must be 3/8 - 5/8 to
qualify. • Bulls and Heifers must be TH/ PHA free by parents or by test • Bulls must be NH, CA and AM free by parents or free by test. Angus pedigrees will not be assumed free of these defects. Bulls must be clean of DS if out of a Red Angus. • Angus percentages will only be counted from actual registered Angus. Commercial Angus percentages will not be used in the Maine Angus equation.
NEW MEMBERS
All new members must choose a program when submitting a new membership. The two programs that are offered are MAPP and Breeders Choice. More information on these two programs is available by visiting maine-anjou.org and clicking on “Member Services” “MAPP Agreement.” If a membership is submitted without choosing a program, the new member will be placed in the Breeders Choice program.

Purchasing Replacement Females by Grady Ruble, M.S. South Dakota State University, Beef Cattle Extension Specialist
A common approach to acquiring replacement females in the cow-calf sector is to retain heifers raised within the herd and develop them into bred females. Some cattlemen can raise a replacement female that is of greater quality both genetically and phenotypically than what they can buy (Schulz and Gunn, 2014). It is easier to manage disease, potentially cheaper for a producer to develop their own females, and the producer is familiar with the cattle and their disposition (Schulz and Gunn, 2014). However, when raising replacements there can be an inability to effectively combine the advantages of both maternal and terminal heterosis (Whittier, 2001). Elimination of the heifer development component of an operation would allow the producer to focus on other aspects of their operation and better align their breeding program with industry demands (Whittier, 2001). A producer must also understand the implications raising their own replacements can have on how resources are allocated. Since replacements are developed on the ranch, a rancher could unintentionally be sacrificing marketable product due to part of the ranch resources being devoted to developing females that are not rearing a calf to sell. If bred females were purchased the ranch resources could support more NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018
24
producing cows with a calf at side. Furthermore, the ranch could potentially produce more pounds of weaned calf since the entire herd would have a calf at side. This is where purchasing replacements can be beneficial. There are a variety of advantages to purchasing replacement females. As previously discussed, purchasing bred females is advantageous from the standpoint of labor and feed resources. When buying bred heifers, they have already been developed to approximately 80% of their mature size (NASEM, 2016). Since there is no development of young heifers on the ranch, more resources can be used for mature, producing cows. It should be noted that producers could purchase open heifers and still garner the benefit of heterosis and breed complementarity. However, doing so places them in the same situation of retaining replacements where they are having to dedicate resources to females that are not currently raising a calf. If a producer chose crossbred
females and used a terminal sire, the calves could have a significant advantage over straight-bred calves. The combined effects of maternal and terminal heterosis yields a 20-28% increase in kg weaned/ cow exposed/year (Spangler, 2007; Weaber, 2015). In a crossbreeding system where F1 females have been mated to a terminal sire of a different breed, the expected advantage is 23.3% (Gregory et al., 1965; Cundiff et al., 1974). In this system, 8.5% of the heterosis advantage comes from heterosis for individual traits (Gregory et al., 1965) and 14.8% is derived from maternal heterosis from the crossbred cow (Cundiff et al., 1974). This demonstrates the importance of both maternal and individual heterosis, but most importantly the benefit of the crossbred cow. Purchasing bred replacement females can also have a positive impact on the number of bulls required and the traits those bulls are selected for. Since there is not a need for a calving ease sire to cover heifers, the producer may find fewer bulls are necessary and selection emphasis can be placed on strictly terminal production. This should result in production of a more uniform calf crop and more post-weaning merit associated with terminal genetics. Genetically, a producer could more rapidly adapt their herd to changing
market signals since they could potentially source heifers that are superior to what they could raise or would take too much time and management to produce their equal with a complex breeding system (Schulz and Gunn, 2014). Although purchasing crossbred replacements is the fastest and simplest way to benefit from maternal heterosis, it is not the only system that uses crossbred females. Rotational terminal and composite systems also offer this advantage. However, purchasing crossbred females may be preferred since the entire cow herd can benefit from maternal heterosis as opposed to a portion of the herd being dedicated to purebred females to generate crossbred replacements. In the case of purchasing crossbred females, improvements in cow longevity are observed, which would decrease the number of replacements needed each year (Cundiff and Gregory, 1999). Reducing the replacement rate can also impact weaning weights of the calves. For example, one of the factors used by breed associations when adjusting weaning weight of calves is age of the cow. This is because calves from young cows are not as heavy at weaning as calves produced by mature cows due to the fact younger cows are still developing (Rumpf and Van Vleck, 2004). If the herd is composed of a greater number of mature cows, a larger number of cows are producing milk at their maximum potential and thus pounds of calf produced would increase. Purchasing replacement females is not a problem-free approach. Implementing such a program would require a heifer of a specific breed composition that could be more difficult to acquire and be subject to differential pricing at the time of purchase. Since replacements are purchased, introduction of new heifers could
expose the herd to potential disease threats. Lastly, it is important to make sure the replacements match the environment they will be expected to work in (Cleere, 2006; Schulz and Gunn, 2014). If cattle do not match their production environment the result could be reproductive failure or cows becoming too fat as they cannot produce enough milk relative to the resources available (Jenkins and Ferrell, 1994; Johnson et al., 2010). Neither approach, raising versus purchasing replacement females, is perfect. Users must be able to identify the advantages and disadvantages of each system, then decide which is the best fit for a particular operation. Understanding how different breeds of cattle fit relative to various environments and using that knowledge to create a crossbred animal that through heterosis allows optimal production in a particular climate can be very influential in the success of an operation. Relative to the pork and poultry industries, the beef industry still has room to grow in terms of producing terminal bound progeny from crossbred females and terminal sires (Weaber, 2015). Conventional breeding systems can be difficult for some producers to implement due to the increased management associated with such systems (Gosey, 1991). Purchasing crossbred replacements is an alternative that could allow producers to maximize the benefits of heterosis and breeding complementarity with the simplicity of managing a straightbred operation.
