VIEWPOINT

CHAROLAIS Recognizing Value and Paying For It

Deep diving into how cattle are marketed

L

eave it to a young, curious graduate student writing her thesis to present a comprehensive marketing analysis with lots of relevant information to digest. Esther McCabe, the fourthgeneration of McCabes to make beef industry contributions, recently published her master’s thesis research, deep diving into how cattle are marketed and what influences pricing in the U.S. Her research largely analyzed data obtained from Superior Livestock Auction from 1995 through 2016. The Superior data was supported by other research from public auctions and those sources cited. It’s important, as we digest any research, to objectively review data. From there, we can see other influences we may not have considered previously. One segment of McCabe’s study definitely indicates favorable pricing for Charolais sired calves. As iconic Paul Harvey used to say, “and now for the rest of the story.” The research looks at beef cattle marketing across commercial production. In some cases, the data looks at decades, considers economic pressures, the implementation of science and technology

certification. Consumer driven niche markets such as natural, non-hormone treated (NHTC) and grass fed minimally influenced market pricing, at least for now. For any commercial beef producer that navigates the market recognizes, size matters. The study recognizes that 175,000 beef operations have been lost in the last 25 years. More than 81% of the losses have come from 1-49 head cow herds. The Superior data indicates the average cow herd size of a Superior customer selling cattle is approximately 200 head, which enables the seller to market load lots, again a marketing advantage. Digging deep into the study indicates many positive nuggets for Charolais and Charolais-influenced producers. From 2010 through 2017, some breeds experienced a decline in the number of lots of calves sold from single-sire breeds, while Charolais documented an overall increase. In many ways, the study confirms what we anecdotally knew. We know, because our breeders report on behalf of their commercial customers, Charolais and Char-cross feeder

From 2010 through 2017, some breeds experienced a decline in the number of lots of calves sold from single-sire breeds, while Charolais documented an overall increase. and documents the market pricing reflected by those influencers. As in all research and the conclusions typically drawn by lay persons or consumers, the devil is in the details. An interesting takeaway is the evolution of price discovery based on management and the implementation of better health and known genetics. In other words, in the early days, preconditioning and vaccination as a marketing component didn’t add any value. Producers were not willing to pay for those improvements. Third party verification began to add confidence. “In 1995, 44.7% of the lots were not vaccinated for respiratory diseases prior to marketing. In 2005, only 3.9% of the lots sold were not vaccinated against respiratory diseases.” Over 11-years the average premium paid for VAC 34 calves ranged from $0.99/cwt to $3.47/cwt. VAC 45 calves earned an average premium of $2.47/cwt to $7.91/cwt during the same 11-year period. More traditional factors—horns, implants, lot size, uniformity of weight, sex, frame, body condition and geographic location also contributed to pricing differences. Since Certified Angus Beef began in the 1970s, more than 125 branded beef programs have been launched, almost all favoring black-hided cattle and requiring a quality grade benchmark for

cattle almost always sell at the top of the market for the day. The study confirms that 490 lots of Charolais sired calves, average weight of 580 pounds, sold for $1.23/cwt higher than the next high selling Red Angus lots. Marketing data is difficult to analyze. Esther McCabe’s research is a fusion of multiple research and represents, arguably, one of the most extensive looks at marketing across the entire spectrum of commercial beef production. All research is a look back. Looking forward requires us to arm ourselves with historical information, understand the pricing signals and be proactive to implement new and improved management tools. Every breed association competes for members and members compete for cow-calf producers. We want to own larger industry market shares, sell more bulls, increase our footprint in the commercial cow-calf sector, record more data and increase our memberships. At the end of the day, our commercial customers determine our success or failure based on the price they receive for their cattle, regardless of end point. Data indicates the beef industry recognizes the value of Charolais and is willing to pay for it!

Learn how to use the AICA Sire Selector Tool by viewing the instructional video posted on the AICA website and YouTube. Utilize the AICA Sire/Dam selector to identify genetics according to EPDs, TSI index and additional search parameters. Display a Photo of Your Herd Bull or Cow on the AICA Online Registry

For a fee of $25.00, AICA will upload the animal picture to the their page on the AICA Online Registry System. Each time someone pulls up your animal on the website, the picture of the animal will appear. To have your herd bull or cow included, you must supply a picture in JPEG format. Please contact the AICA office or send an e-mail to mschoen@charolaisusa.com. Export Your Data for Sale Catalogs

Under the “tools” tab, you will find a new “Data Export” button. This data export gives you the flexibility to export data on animals in your herd and use those data files in your own management packages. You can download and save the files directly to your computer in a CSV (can be opened in Excel) format. There are many options within this feature including selecting the type of animal to export and specific data.

THE LINE PARASITES CROSS AT THEIR OWN RISK

Better health means better production. So why not choose better parasite control? Cydectin® (moxidectin) Pour-On dewormer kills key parasites that threaten your beef cattle and has little to no impact on beneficial dung beetles. Make a healthier choice for your herd. Choose Cydectin.

SAFETY AND RESIDUE INFORMATION: Cydectin Pour-On: When used according to label, Cydectin Pour-On has neither a meat withdrawal nor milk withhold time. Do not use in veal calves. 22  

After seeing the calves at both Russ and Terrill’s places, we knew that we needed to use this bull. 5627 is a square footed, athletic moving, massive specimen that has a look of quality. What really impressed us was the wide array of cows he worked on. Look for more and more of his influence in the future, we believe this bull is going to be a breeding piece.

“Software Disease” –

The Hazards of Plastic, Net Wrap and Twines By Heather Smith Thomas

Net Wrap from rumen - at necropsy

attle, especially young ones, are curious and like to chew on anything within reach. They may eat baling twines, plastic bags and other debris that ends up in their pen or pasture. The strange material may taste or smell interesting, so the animals chomp it down. Sometimes cattle accidentally ingest foreign objects in their feed just because they eat hurriedly and don’t bother to chew their feed very much. Every year a few cattle die mysteriously—often after a slow decline with loss of weight and diarrhea--and the owner and veterinarian may be clueless about the cause of death unless the animal is opened up to find the material plugging the GI tract. For instance, a Colorado veterinarian was once called to a ranch to check a steer that was slowly wasting away with watery diarrhea, getting weaker each day. The steer was slightly bloated and wasn’t eating much, but drank a lot of water. His temperature was normal, heart and lungs seemed fine, he didn’t have hardware, and none of the fecal or blood tests that were taken showed any indication of disease. The steer finally died

and the veterinarian did a necropsy—and discovered a pair of denim pants plugging up the stomach. Ingestion of various materials (usually plastic) has become a common killer today, mainly because cattle have access to more litter. The pasture or pen may be next to a highway where litter from passing cars blows over the countryside. If cattle are within a mile of dumpsters, construction sites, or a subdivision’s garbage that may blow over the fields, they may find interesting objects to chew on. Plastic bags, party balloons, weather balloons and other “fallout” from human activity may end up inside cattle, and there’s no way to remove the blockage without surgery. Without knowing the problem, very few veterinarians perform exploratory surgery on cattle. The result is a quiet, slow, painful death, with no definitive symptoms. Small pieces of material may go right on through and you never know the animal ate it. If it’s a large blockage, however, the animal may stop passing manure, and stop eating. The GI tract is “full” so there’s no room for more feed. A partial

blockage leads to diarrhea, since only the liquid contents of the gut can make it through. This leads to suspicion of diseases like coccidiosis, Salmonella, BVD, E. coli, Johne’s disease, liver flukes or other parasites, but there is no treatment for “plastic disease”. The best prevention is to pick up every piece of garbage you find in your pastures, including old hay twines, and

“Symptoms were similar to Johne’s disease but we hadn’t bought any outside cattle. After we found the net wrap in the cow our vet cut open, we suspect that’s what was killing the other cows.”

Net Wrap from rumen to never re-bale broken bales without first removing the twines.

NET WRAP AND TWINES A growing number of cattle producers are discovering the risks for cattle when leaving net wrap or twines on big bales of hay/straw or other forages when feeding, or using a bale processor. Dustin McCullen has a cow-calf herd near Dixon, Montana and a few years ago had a cow losing weight, with diarrhea. She got to the point that he shot her as the most humane thing to do, then had his veterinarian—Dr. Beth 28  

Blevins— do a post-mortem examination. “A few years earlier we started noticing an occasional cow start wasting away, with little or no appetite. They would go downhill pretty fast once they started losing weight. We’d lose about 1 cow per year. We first noticed it after we bought a new baler that used net wrap on the big round bales,” says Dustin. “The cows lost weight quickly and we’d end up just shooting them because we didn’t want them starving to death and too weak to stand up. We couldn’t figure it out. Then we heard about one of our neighbors having troubles like this and taking one of his cows to a butcher—and finding the rumen full of net wrap. I’d been suspecting something like this with our cattle, so when I had another cow losing weight we had our vet post her after I shot her. Sure enough, the rumen had a big wad of net wrap in it.” Earlier, he suspected hardware. “We’d put magnets in these cows and give them antibiotics, but nothing would help them. The cows were basically starving to death in spite of lots of feed available. The rumen was full—with the net wrap and impaired digestion and not much going through—so they couldn’t eat very much,” says Dustin. “Symptoms were similar to Johne’s disease but we hadn’t bought any outside cattle. After we found the net wrap in the cow our vet cut open, we suspect that’s what was killing the other cows.” The wad of net wrap in the rumen was huge, mixed and tangled amongst the hay in one big mess. “In the past we often put straw bales in a round bale feeder, and to keep it from shattering and being wasted we’d leave the net wrap on and come back the next day and take the net wrap out of the empty feeder. I think sometimes the cows would get hold of that net wrap and eat it. I’m a little surprised it would make it to the rumen. You wouldn’t think it could pass that far, but this is where it ends up. Since it can’t get on into the small intestine; it just stays in the rumen,” he says. “This cow had a slight infection; there was some pus in her small intestine where the net wrap was rubbing against the opening, irritating the tissue. She’d been a hard-fleshing cow for a few weeks, and then she started acting real sick—maybe because of the irritation and infection,” says Dustin. “When our vet posted that cow, we asked if she’d ever seen any other cases. She said no, but she thought most people don’t check. They might have a cow or two that just wasted away and they never know what the problem might be. In our experience there was no reason for the weight loss; sometimes it might be a 4-year-old cow, or a 14-year-old cow. The symptoms are similar to Johne’s (but young cows don’t show symptoms, if they have Johne’s) and hardware disease, but after dragging that big wad of net wrap out of this cow we are fairly certain that’s what happened to the other cows,” he says. They all declined in flesh and eventually had to be euthanized. “When bales are frozen and we roll them out for the cows to eat, it can be nearly impossible to take the net wrap off. We just leave it on the outside round and come back and get it later after the cows have eaten the hay. That’s probably when we have the most trouble—when the net wrap or twine is stuck to those bales and you have to leave it on there. Either the net wrap we leave on straw bales in the feeder, or the frozen round bales, is

CHAROLAIS JOURNAL

where the cows are getting it, because we cut it off, if possible,” says Dustin. “We didn’t seem to have that much trouble with twine. Perhaps it’s possible for a piece of twine to go all the way through the cow, whereas the big wad of net wrap can’t make it through.” It might depend on how much twine the cow ate, and whether it breaks apart going through the stomachs. Beth Blevins, the veterinarian who did the necropsy on Dustin’s cow, says cows may keep ingesting more pieces of net wrap and it gets all tangled together as a bigger wad, making it even harder to pass on through. Diagnosis is difficult in the living cow because the wad of net wrap would not be detectable with ultrasound. “It would look just like part of the rumen contents, mixed in with all the hay and feed,” she says. The plastic doesn’t seem to break down in the rumen. “I don’t know how long this wad was in her gut, but it looked just like fresh net wrap—except that it had changed to a darker color and was no longer light green. It didn’t break down at all. Also, I think when rumen material starts layering over the top of it, this would tend to protect it. The rumen has bacteria for fermentation digestion, but it doesn’t have the acid that’s in the abomasum (true stomach). The acid might break it down, but the net wrap didn’t make it to the stomach; it stayed in the rumen,” says Blevins. Some producers use sisal twine, and figure they can just leave the twine on the bales without problems. They don’t want to have to pull off plastic twines or net wrap. Sisal does break down in the rumen, whereas plastic stays intact and will plug up the rumen or block the GI tract, potentially causing death of the cow. One livestock specialist in Canada (who got his facts from a veterinarian who works in Feedlot Alley in southern Alberta) said the biggest single cause of death loss in Feedlot Alley is plastic in the animal’s gut. A common assumption is that most of this plastic is the net wrap that goes through a bale processer. It gets chopped up and the cattle are more likely to consume the many small pieces than a big wad that came off a bale in the field or feeder. The many small pieces chopped up with the hay are often eaten, whereas the larger pieces are more likely to be spit out after the cow has trouble chewing it all up. Ingested net wrap and twines are a huge cause of indigestion and weight loss, especially when the rumen gets partially blocked, and sometimes the cow bloats up and suddenly dies if the rumen becomes totally blocked.

NDSU STUDIES Carl Dahlen, Beef Specialist, North Dakota State University Animal Science Department, became interested in this problem after the NDSU diagnostic lab necropied a case of acute bloat associated with ingestion of a large wad of net wrap. He decided to compare various materials to see how well they break down (or not) in the rumen or move on through. Cattle often eat small pieces of net wrap or twines, but sometimes start chewing on large wads and just keep swallowing it down, ending up with a big mass in the rumen. “We need to do studies looking at long-term implications of ingesting this

material. Our study was a short-term look at what happens to it in the rumen,” he says. Six types of material were evaluated: sisal twine, biodegradable twine, three different kinds of net wrap, and hay (bromegrass). The hay was a control sample, for comparison. Each of the materials was cut into small pieces, and 2 grams of each sample was put into nylon bags and placed in the rumen of 2 forage-fed Holstein steers. “The nylon bags would not degrade in the rumen, yet the rumen fluid could come into the bag and bacteria action could occur in the bags. We kept some of these samples inside the cattle for 14 days,” says Dahlen. After being in the rumen for various times (4 days, 7 days and 14 days) the bags were taken out and rinsed (to remove all extra material and rumen fluid), drained and dried, then weighed. “Nothing was disappearing. After 14 days in the rumen, none of the 3 types of net wrap or the biodegradable twine samples disappeared. Most of the hay sample was digested and gone, and more than 70% of the sisal twine disappeared over the 14-day period. Biodegradable twine breaks down in UV light, but there is no UV light in the rumen, so it doesn’t break down in there,” he says. “We did another study, feeding steers net wrap. These were steers from one of our judging classes, scheduled to be harvested in our meat lab. One group was fed net wrap until harvest and another group was fed net wrap up until 14 days before harvest. That group would have 14 days to continue eating and not have any new net wrap coming into their rumen. We wanted to see if the net wrap might go on through and if the rumen could clear itself of this material, or if this material would still be there after 14 days,” says Dahlen. “This study looked at what might happen in the rumen if the net wrap is floating free in there while the animal burps, chews its cud, etc. The net wrap could come up with the other material, get chewed more--and the rumen is churning/pulling everything around inside it during the digestive process. We wondered if this might clear net wrap out of the system,” he explains. “We opened those cattle up and there was still net wrap all through the rumen, even in the steers that hadn’t been fed any more net wrap for 14 days. That shows it is staying in there and may just keep accumulating. The other thing we saw, because we were looking through all these rumens, was that cattle eat all kinds of interesting things. There were rocks, little pieces of plastic from the covering of a silage pile, etc.,” he says. “We’ve heard of cattle eating plastic bags and other things that block the natural digestion processes. These objects can either block on the front end, which would lead to bloat (hindering ability to burp) or block the other end, and the material can’t leave the rumen as readily.” This would create lingering effects like impaction, or weight loss because the rumen is full and the animal can’t eat much. These cattle tend to go off feed, lose weight, and may have diarrhea because only the fluid can get past the blockage.

H

i everybody, my name is Kadon Leddy and I am from Stockholm, South Dakota. I am 19 years old and currently a sophomore at South Dakota State University and majoring in Ag Business. I grew up on farm in northeastern South Dakota and raise purebred Charolais cattle. My family owns a livestock publication called The Cattle Business Weekly and I have started working the ring at cattle sales across the country with my father Donnie. I look forward to being on the board and meeting the junior members.

Q:

Where was your first Junior National and what was your favorites memory from it?

A: My first Junior National was in Sioux Falls, South

Dakota. I was 10 at the time and I remember watching Jordan Mack get selected for the herdsman award. Since then it has been my goal to someday win the herdsman award because of how prestigious it is.

Q: Why is it important for the younger kids to get involved in the events of the AIJCA?

A:

The younger kids are important because they are going to be the future Junior Board members and possibly the future AICA Board Members so it is important that they get involved to keep the association around. The Junior National offers so many opportunities that utilize teamwork, public speaking skills, and problem solving, all of which the younger kids can benefit from.

Q: Who has been the biggest help to you throughout

Q: What are some of your future goals? A: I want to win the U-Fit-It contest at the South Dakota

State Fair. Every year that I have qualified for the contest I’ve made it to the final round but haven’t won it yet. So far I’ve been in the top five four times. I also want to take over my family’s livestock publication, The Cattle Business Weekly, and run it with my brother Korbin.

Q: What are some of your traits that help you to be a good board member?

A: I am a hard worker and am persistent. If I want something bad enough I will work at getting it even if it means having to accept defeat numerous times before achieving it. I feel like having this skill is important because being on the board you have a variety of responsibilities and being a hard worker makes a well-rounded person. Q: How has being involved in the AIJCA impacted you?

A: I’ve met so many great people from different parts of the United States and Canada. If I hadn’t been a part of the AIJCA I wouldn’t have as many connections as I do now. The people that I’ve meet from going to different shows are great resources that I will be able to use for the rest of my life. Q: What are you thankful for this Thanksgiving? A: I am thankful for my family. I’m thankful that I can

your show career, and who is somebody you looked attend livestock shows with my family because that is where some of my fondest memories come from. Here is a young May prospect that will trip a few triggers. She has all the parts and pieces to bring you success in the show ring. She is feminine, stout and has a tremendous hair coat. She has had several full sisters that have sold well as weaning age calves and many have been quite successful in the show ring. One full sister sold in 2015 for $13,000, another one was the 2015 Reserve Grand Heifer at the Houston Livestock Show and another one was the Junior Calf Champion at the American Royal. This heifer is extremely gentle and would be great for a young showman.

Another nice daughter of the great Resource 417 who’s dam highlights the donors in this offering later in the catalog. She is moderate, easy-fleshing and broody to make a productive brood cow after her show career. Check out this pedigree on the bottom side too. Her dam’s sire is a son of the great Baldridge Sweetheart 7M and further back she goes back to the sire of Ledger and the popular Vanessa cow family made famous by Morven Farms with the JWK prefix. The first Monumental calves are here and we love them! WC Monumental created a lot of excitement during our 2017 Bull Sale when he sold for $42,500 to Weber Charolais in South Dakota. This heifer rises to the top for look and build but still has the rib and body it takes to be a great one. She is one that will compete at the highest levels and she proved it at her first trip out of the show barn to the Tulsa State Fair winning the Reserve Grand Champion Heifer award the end of September. Watch out for her if you don’t buy her! Her dam is a maternal sister to WCCC Miss Alliance 428 the dam of Lot 1 and the maternal grand dam of Lots 2 & 3.

She ranks in the top of the breed in many EPD categories: top 1% for SC, CW and REA, top 3% for WW and top 4% for YW & TSI. She had her first calf on her second birthday on 1-11-16 a bull that had a weaning ratio of 105 to rank #4 out of 29 contemporaries off of first calf heifers. Her second calf, a beautiful daughter born 2-5-17 sells in this sale as Lot 19. Now consider the two elite sires she could be bred to, either Aquarius or Lock N Load! She is out of our long time donor Mary Maid 5363 that has several sons working in purebred herds across America. She has been a great producer with a calving interval of 1-1-16, 1-417 and 1-1-18. Last year’s 2017 bull calf had a weaning weight of 811 lbs. Just think how good this WC Milestone calf will be. Lot 32

Bred AI on 9-17-18 to CCC WC Resource 417 P, updated breeding information available sale day. SELLING 2/3 INTEREST! 1/3 Interest is owned by and retained by Grand Hills Cattle, LLC, Lance Pfeiff, Pierce, Colorado This great donor dam has captured everyone’s imagination that have laid eyes upon her! You will not be able to walk away from this “Sweetheart”. She may be the best daughter of the incomparable Baldridge Sweetheart 7M alive and that is a big hurdle to get over! 1140 has been an extremely productive brood cow of consistent production. She had her first calf before her second birthday on 1-6-13, a bull that had an adjusted weaning weight of 762 lbs. Her next natural calf was born 2-16-14, a heifer that had an adjusted weaning weight of 751 lbs. to ratio 119, the #2 ranked heifer out of 47 contemporaries and sold in the 2014 National Charolais Sale for $18,000 to J & J Trust in South Dakota. She then went into the transplant program producing 21 ET progeny to date, with only the bull calves being sold and those six bull calves had adjusted weaning weights of 762, 745, 768, 742, 732 and 743, from five different sires. Consistent production! More ET sons will headline our spring bull sales! There is so much genetic strength in this female and it took a big offer to get a 1/3 embryo interest into the hands of Lance at Grand Hills Cattle two years ago. Give this female your utmost attention! Flush Record: She has been flushed 15 times and has produced an average of 13.3 embryos per flush. Presented by Cody Cattle Company & Wright Charolais

Open, ready to flush! SELLING FULL INTEREST! She was the high-selling donor in the highly maternal M&M Charolais Dispersal to the partnership of Wild Indian Acres, Cody Cattle Company & Wright Charolais. She was the first female in the ring and it only became evident as the day went on that she can flat out produce great ones! Three first calf heifer daughters sired by LT Long Distance 9001 sold later that day for an average of $6,083 and one of those daughters produced the high selling heifer calf for $10,250 selling to Glenn Sellhorst in Nebraska (pictured). Later three weaning age daughters of #8512 sired by M6 Cool Rep 8108 sold for an average of $3,000 and four weaning age daughters of #8512 sired by LT Rushmore 8060 sold for an average of $6,125! A Ledger son sold for $7,000. If we would have walked her back into the ring after that, more breeders would have taken a shot at her, but very doubtful they would have owned her! Now turn to her pedigree; Yes she is a maternal sister to Baldridge Sweetheart 7M! Only this donor is sired by the National Reserve Grand Champion Bull DR Stealth 574, whose progeny were highly recognized during the M&M Dispersal as the strength and power behind that great set of mama cows! 7M is the dam of M&M Raptor 8122, the sire of M&M Ms Carbine 1567 Pld, the dam of M&M Outsider! Open, ready to flush! SELLING 2/3 INTEREST! 1/3 Interest is owned by and retained by Grand Hills Cattle, LLC, Lance Pfeiff, Pierce, Colorado She is the dam of CCC WC Resource 417 P! There is no secret to the effect the Resource progeny has had on the show and sale ring over the past couple of years. His progeny have topped sale after sale and they have been laying claim to many of the big time show championships. It all starts with the dam of these powerful genetic masterpieces and here she is! Resource was her first calf born on 2-17-14 and she weaned him to a strong 923 lbs. to ratio 120, the #1 ranked bull in his contemporary group. She then calved again on 1-30-15 to Rushmore again with a heifer calf that didn’t get weighed at weaning, but raised a son born on 2-14-17 that weaned at 784 lbs. Her third calf was born 2-5-16 another Rushmore daughter that weaned at 769 lbs. to ratio 120, the #1 ranked heifer calf out of 62 contemporaries. And finally on 1-10-17 she had another full brother to Resource that had an adjusted weaning weight of 808 lbs. to ratio 104 ranking him #4 out of 18 contemps and was a member of the 2018 Denver Grand Champion Pen-ofFive Bulls! This great donor can make the difference you’re looking for in performance and style! Flush Record: She has been flushed 7 times and has produced an average of 6.0 embryos per flush.
