VIEWPOINT

CHAROLAIS

Participation is the ultimate form of communication

Seize the opportunity

In this space last month, we discussed the many exciting events scheduled in the month of October. The activities, sales and relevance of events continue into November through the end of the year. The fall AICA Board of Directors and committee meetings will be held November 13-14 in conjunction with the North American International Livestock Exposition National Roll of Excellence Show, Kentucky Fair & Exposition Center, Louisville, Kentucky. The fall meetings (usually held in Kansas City) will be held in the Exposition Center West Hall. The Junior Charolais Heifer Show will begin immediately after the Hereford heifer show which begins at 8:00 a.m., Saturday, November 13. AICA committee meetings begin at

Charolais exhibitors will be hosted in the newly constructed Stockyards Event Center. The 43rd National Charolais Sale is scheduled for January 15, 2022. While we progress toward year’s end and are likely focused on breeding and calving season, genetic selection, ranch management decisions and risk management, it’s equally important to remain connected to other livestock sectors. More and more beef producers are trying their hand at pasture to plate, directly engaging consumers by selling home-raised beef. Smaller, local meat processors across the country are planning expansions supporting pasture to plate producers’ processing needs. The fed cattle market depression created by Black Swan events in 2020 continue today. Labor issues exacerbated by COVID-19 posed

Over the years, I avoided writing this column in the first person. After all, AICA is a “we” organization. However, I want to personally invite you to the Saddle & Sirloin reception and banquet, Sunday evening, beginning at 5:00 p.m. 9:00 a.m. on Saturday as well. Committee meetings will wrap up on Sunday, November 14. Go to charolaisusa.com/meetingscommittee for a complete meeting schedule. Over the years, I avoided writing this column in the first person. After all, AICA is a “we” organization. However, I want to personally invite you to the Saddle & Sirloin reception and banquet, Sunday evening, beginning at 5:00 p.m. As many of you may know, the Saddle & Sirloin Award is one of the livestock industry’s most coveted awards and is an acknowledgment an inductee has dedicated his or her career trying to make a difference. Earlier this year, the Saddle & Sirloin committee informed me that I had been selected as the 2021 inductee. To say the award is humbling is an understatement. The award and the months of planning for the official induction ceremony have given me the perfect platform for introspection. My conclusion is we all have made a difference and I hope you can join us to celebrate. Go to CharolaisUSA.com for more information. Once we turn the calendar page from 2021 to 2022, exhibitors headed to Denver will see and experience the first phase of the “new” National Western. Many of the facilities were well over a century old and most all were outgrown or obsolete. The 2015 Master Plan proposed a $1.3 billion massive construction project built in phases over several years. The 2022

an insurmountable processing backlog. Getting the more than one million head of finished cattle that couldn’t get from the feed yard to the processor has taken most of the year. The old proverb “Necessity is the mother of invention” comes to mind. Progressive producers are seizing the opportunity to create their own successful marketing niche. The results are precisely what’s been missing for generations: closer connectivity to the consumer. Pasture to plate producers have a unique opportunity. For generations, few producers really knew much about the consumer. Selling a pound of beef raised on your farm or ranch enables you to make sure the consumer knows why beef is nutritionally irreplaceable in a family’s diet. You now have a platform to convince the consumer they are buying the same wholesome beef you feed your family and the extraordinary care taken to make sure your animals never have a bad day. Market volatility will always be a factor in livestock production. Producers adapt. Scientific advancements have led to the development of genomic selection tools, enabling registered and commercial Charolais beef producers to make breeding decisions with greater end-product predictability. Pasture to plate marketing success will be determined by genetics, herd health, nutrition, animal welfare and best practice animal husbandry. Your customers will issue the “report card.”

The AICA is the official registry for Charolais and Charbray cattle in the United States. Charolais cattle were first brought to the U.S. in 1936. In 1957, the American Charolais Breeders Association and the International Charolais Breeders Association merged forming the present AICA. Membership in the AICA is obtainable when the applicant has ownership in at least one animal, and has paid the initial membership fee of $125. AICA annual dues are $100.

New online lab results! View your lab results with one click. Under the “herd” tab, click into “My Lab”. Your DNA tested animals will be listed there. Click the “view” button to see details on each animal. You can also download the results in an Excel file by using the “Lab Test Results Export” under the “tools” tab. Year letter for 2021 is J. Record your 2021 born calves using AICA’s online system. Add the data as the calves are born; continue to update the records as you add weaning and yearling data. Register the calves at any time by adding their name. Expedited Registration Work

If an animal needs to be registered with in a day or two a rush fee of $50 will be added to work. Once the animal is registered you can pull it up online to view the registration number. The new certificate will be mailed out the following day. We also offer FedEx mailing for additional $50. Enter Weight Data Online.

Log in with your breeder number and password. Hold your cursor on the “my performance” tab. Members with enrolled females can enter weaning and yearling weights from the animal list. We offer both individual entry and list entry. Make sure each calf has a record by using the “calving” button. Udder and Teat scores can be added in the “calving” section. score can be added at Weaning. Contact AICA if you have questions. ONLINE TIPS

Transfers cannot be done on-line if the paper has already been issued. The original paper must be returned to AICA. Animals registered on-line can be held in the system for transfer or print later. Many members find it helpful to hold all the newly registered animals in the system. No need to chase papers around. When using a non-Charolais parent, follow the example given on the entry screen. For a non-Charolais female type FNF-XXXX, for a non-Charolais male type FNM-XXXX. You may also use breed codes to indicate the breed of the non-Charolais animal but be sure to use 4 digits (example: FNM-ANAN). We can add the pedigree of your other breed animal but need a copy of the pedigree 1st. The fee to add a pedigree is $20. Be sure to click the “register” box and the “save” button at the bottom of the registration screen if you want the animal registered. The registration number will pop up in the middle of the screen or you’ll get an error message telling you what boxes you have missed. National Charolais Show and Sale

The National Charolais Show and Sale have been scheduled for the 2022 National Western Stock Show, Denver, Colorado. Activities will start on Saturday morning, January 15, in the new Stockyards Arena with the National Roll of Excellence Bull and Heifers Pen Show. That afternoon, the 43rd National Charolais Sale will start art 1:00 p.m., in the new Stockyards Sale Arena – Sale Manager, Hubert Cattle Sales. Activities will move to the Hill on Sunday, January 16, with the National Western Junior Charolais and Junior Percentage Charolais Heifer Shows. The 53rd National Charolais Show will conclude events on Monday morning, January 17. Watch the Charolais Journal for updates on earlier arrival days/times for both Yards and Hill entries. AICA DNA Requirements

AI Sires used “out of herd” and all Donor Dams must be DNA tested before calves can be registered. AICA recommends collecting DNA samples during the donor’s initial flush. Check the animal’s record to make sure the DNA work has been done before submitting registration papers. DNA kits are specific to the animal being tested. Contact Marilou Wegner to request a kit. AICA rules require signatures on bulls and dams you do not own. Signatures can be submitted online, fax, mail or e-mail.

AICA Announces Clint Rusk as New Executive Vice President

Kansas City, MO - The American-International Charolais Association Board of Directors has selected Clint Rusk, current Department Head of the Animal and Food Sciences Department at Oklahoma State University, as its new Excutive Vice President. Clint will be replacing J. Neil Orth, who is retiring at the end of 2021 after two decades of leading the organization. Clint grew up on his family’s Hereford and Angus ranch near Sun City, Kansas. After graduating as valedictorian of his high school class, Clint attended Colby Community College, where he was a Presidential Scholar and a member of the National Champion Livestock Judging Team. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from Kansas State University with his B.S. degree in 1980. After graduation, Clint returned to his family’s ranch for five years. In 1985, Clint and his family moved to Fort Collins, Colorado, to manage the purebred cattle unit at Colorado State University. In 1987, he also accepted the duty of coaching CSU’s livestock judging team. Clint coached 10 livestock judging teams at Colorado State University. His teams were Reserve National Champions in: 1987, 1991, 1993 and 1995. Clint was named “Coach of the Year” by the Intercollegiate Coaches’ Association, in 1991 and 1992. For the past 24 years, Dr. Rusk has helped coordinate livestock judging contests for collegiate, 4-H and FFA contestants at contests across the country. Clint completed his M.S. degree in 1992 and his Ph.D. in male reproductive physiology in 1997 at Colorado State University. After completing his doctorate, Dr. Rusk joined Purdue University as its Youth Livestock Specialist. Clint enjoyed conducting educational programming for 4-H members and their parents for 13 years. In 2009, Dr. Rusk was selected to lead the Animal and Range Sciences Department at South Dakota State University. Over a three-year period, Dr. Rusk gained valuable administrative experience working with industry leaders, university professors, successful alumni and an outstanding group of dedicated students. As executive Vice President, Clint will work closely with AICA staff and Board of Directors to serve the Association’s members. He will be in attendance at the November board meetings in Louisville, KY. Clint’s employment will commence November 1st at the AICA Headquarters. He and his wife, Madeleine will make their home in Kansas City. The Rusks have two children: Shane and his wife Julie and a daughter Ashley. Dr. Rusk said, “I am thrilled to join the American-International Charolais Association as Executive Vice President. I look forward to meeting Charolais breeders at the American Royal in Kansas City and the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville in the coming weeks. While in Louisville, I’m also looking forward to attending the induction of J. Neil Orth into the prestigious Saddle and Sirloin Club on Sunday evening, November 14th.”

AMERICAN-INTERNATIONAL JUNIOR CHAROLAIS ASSOCIATION

Raley Downing, At Large Director

VIEWPOINT

JUNIOR

Get to Know Your Director! Interviewed by Madison Voet, Secretary

A

big howdy from Lubbock, Texas! I’m Raley Downing and I have the pleasure of serving as one of your 2021-2022 At Large Directors. I have been involved in the Charolais breed for eight years now and it has molded me in more ways than I could have imagined. My two older brothers and I grew up on our family farm in Troy, Texas. We worked countless hours for our dad, John Downing, running his commercial cattle operation. Today, Trinton and Clayton are both still working for our dad while I attend college at Texas Tech University. I plan to graduate in May of 2024 with my Bachelor of Science in Animal Science Production. After raising my own cattle over the years, I have decided I might use my degree to become an embryologist and continue to produce elite genetics with other breeders.

Q:

Why did you choose to get involved in the Charolais breed over other breeds?

A: The reason I got involved in the Charolais breed, over

other breeds, was simply because of my mom. My brothers showed Angus in the past and dropped it for rodeoing. Once I finally convinced my parents to get back into showing cattle, we debated for a month on which breed I could get and why I’d want it. Between the 3 of us, almost every breed was mentioned and how it could potentially benefit our commercial operation. The final decision was made because my mom said, “I just think white cows would look so pretty on green grass.”

Q: What are some of your traits that help you to be a good board member?

A: I think my adaptability will help me be a good board Q: What was your favorite Junior National? member. One thing I have learned in raising cattle and A: My favorite Junior Nationals was this past year (2021) going through life, is things rarely go as planned. No matter

in Perry, GA. It was my first year running for the board and how well prepared you are for something, God has his own I was able to meet so many friendly faces and dance to “My plan, and we have to adjust to it. Little Teapot.” I was able to play volleyball and eat dinner with new friends, along with participating in sales talk and Q: Who has been the biggest help to you team cook-off. By far, my favorite part of the 2021 AIJCA was throughout your show career? the dance party in the Texas stalls. A: My biggest supporters in the show industry have been my parents. Since it’s football season, I’m going to explain Q: Who is the biggest role model in your life? it like this: on our team, I am the quarterback, calling the A: My biggest role model is my brother Clayton. He and I plays, seeing them out, and getting most of the credit. My have been very close since we were babies. Obviously, we’ve mom is my wide receiver, she is always there to catch any had our fights, but we always got through them. Clayton pass I throw her way and gain more yards. Then Papa John has had a big influence on many of the decisions I make is my left tackle, he protects my blind side. Although my today. Growing up, I got to work alongside him and see parents don’t get as much recognition as they deserve, how dedicated he was to training his horses and bettering none of my “plays” would work without them on the himself at roping. His drive and hard work is the reason I field. Mom was always in the barn when I needed her help constantly try to better myself and the work I do. walking calves, feeding, or just company. Dad made sure I a level head and didn’t buy more cattle than I had time Q: What do you think makes the Charolais breed kept for or could afford. They both attend every show they can appealing to commercial cattlemen, and how do and help me with anything I ask. Even now, as I’m over 5 you see our breed influencing the cattle industry? hours away, they are helping me with my cattle and keeping A: I think what makes the Charolais breed appealing to them at top performance. commercial cattlemen is their hybrid vigor. Everyone wants to make more money in less time. L & L SESSION FOCUSES ON NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR CREATING ADDED PROFITS By Linda Eck

Advancing profitability and sustainability through the use of precision livestock management techniques was the focus of conversation during the recent Listening & Learning Industry Session held recently at West Virginia University. Sponsored by the American International Charolais Association (AICA), Immucell Corporation, and held on the University’s Reymann Memorial Farm at Wardensville, this year’s event drew both Charolais seedstock and commercial cattle producers together with highlighted topics centered on management techniques to align producers with future productivity and sustainability. Highlighting genetic tools Charolais breeders can use to up their production and profitability, Dr. Sally Northcutt of Method Genetics, LLC addressed the value of data submission, specifically for feed intake data.

The Value of Heritability In opening remarks of her presentation, Dr. Northcutt emphasized the importance of producer reporting to the AICA to support the development of improved selection indexes and Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs). “In order to drill down and make good index values you must have those component parts along with economically relevant values,” she said. “You need to have the EPDs to put into the selection index.” “Some of the inner workings of your EPDs are the genetic parameters that underly that genetic evaluation,” she added. In order to put the importance of heritability in perspective, she gave a quick review of traits and their heritability estimates. “We want to establish that genetic variation and our reproductive traits tend to be fairly lowly heritable,” she explained. “If you think about heifer pregnancy EPDs in the industry, the heritability is about 10 to 13 percent, so you have a small genetic piece - that 13 percent - that’s due to genetics and you may have up to 90 percent that’s due to environment, management - what you do at the farm or

Dr. Sally Northcutt

ranch.” “Our growth traits are fun to work with because they’re more moderately heritable (20-40 percent) and that makes it easier to make selection for those traits effective,” Dr. Northcutt continued. “Carcass traits are always the most fun because you have that more highly heritable (greater than 40 percent) trait and it’s a faster way to make directional genetic change.” Referencing earlier discussion in the program concerning the importance of Dry Matter Intake (DMI) to performance livestock management and the importance of growth and carcass heritability, Dr. Northcutt reinforced the high heritability of postweaning traits, noting research has shown the heritability of Average Daily Gain (ADG) to be about 35 percent, Hot Carcass Weight (HCW), 44 percent and Tenderness Score to be 30 percent. She continued, noting some breed organizations are publishing EPDs for DMI or Average Daily Feed Intake (ADFI). The American Angus Association reported DMI heritability a little over 30 percent with a correlation to post-weaning gain of about 60 percent. The American Hereford Association offers ADFI correlated to post weaning gain at 70 percent, and a heritability “similar in magnitude” at 43 percent.

In opening remarks of her presentation, Dr. Northcutt emphasized the importance of producer reporting to the AICA to support the development of improved selection indexes and Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs). CHAROLAIS JOURNAL

“So, you have trait relationships, genetic correlations - how traits move and in which direction. Some of that shared genetic control,” Dr. Northcutt explained. “Some of the genes that control one trait control the other, so we can look at that from an intake and gain perspective.” “We’re trying to make a difference from a genetic potential, so we have to understand those relationships,” she added.

Critical Information for Single Step Evaluation Dr. Northcutt went on to explain key components for the AICA’s current Single Step Genetic Evaluation or commonly known as the AICA National Cattle Evaluation which delivers EPDs. This procedure includes “not only the performance data, the contemporary data you submit to the association, as well as pedigree information…but we’re also using a genotype-based DNA result that actually augments that paper pedigree in a sense,” she said. “That genotype being incorporated into this mathematical model gives you a better refinement or accuracy of prediction.” All the information - performance data, pedigree and genotype - is incorporated simultaneously when the updated evaluation is processed by the association every other month. In explaining the importance of using the DNA component, Dr. Northcutt used the example of differences seen between brothers and sisters and cited the use of DNA to explain variations in full sib embryo transplant calves. “Having a single step genetic evaluation and that DNA component included helps differentiate those embryo transfer calves,” she said, noting the DNA impact comes into play. “Thinking futuristically, for more refined traits such as a genetic intake value for Charolais, you could grow a database of that performance information, but you could also incorporate the genomic piece to derive predictions on non-parents. So, you don’t have to have all the pieces to make this work.”

N O V E M B E R 2021

She commended Charolais producers for doing a “super nice job” in terms of recording birth, heifer calving scores, udder scores and weaning records. But encouraged breeders to submit more post-weaning information and provide as much performance data as possible in proper contemporary groups, not only on bulls, but also on heifers to help grow the association’s database. “It is critical right now with our single step evaluation procedures that you still report as much performance information as possible,” she said, noting that scrotal, carcass, ultrasound, udder quality and now docility information is all being recorded by the AICA. Processing data within contemporary groups is required for accurate evaluation and Dr. Northcutt stressed it is essential that performance data be provided in groups of cattle that are treated equally. “Only the breeder can define, when turning in data, the set of cattle that are managed and treated alike,” she added, emphasizing the importance of breeder integrity when reporting contemporary groups. Contemporary groups meet these criteria: • Set of animals managed and treated alike • Same sex • Exposed to same environmental conditions • Having equal opportunity to perform

Benefits of Reporting Feed Intake Data Dr. Northcutt told attendees the AICA is currently accepting feed intake data as more and more producers are discovering the value of feed intake records to support productivity and profits. The AICA website offers information for submitting both current and historical data and breeders are encouraged to contact association staff to work through the submission process. For reporting feed intake data, she presented a snapshot of key fields required when submitting information. Feed Intake Data Fields • Animal ID recorded at AICA • Weights for animal performance • On/Off Test Weights and Dates • Test Average Daily Gain • Dry Matter Intake with Units “It’s really pretty simple sharing of information, it’s just a matter of making that data exchange,” she said. In concluding her presentation, Dr. Northcutt told the group that properly submitted data and the development of a Dry Matter Intake EPD would allow for an efficiency component to be incorporated into the Association’s Terminal Sire Index (TSI). The TSI is reported in dollars and identifies the most profitable sires based on the breeding objective that all calves are going to be marketed. Currently, for bulls to have a TSI, they must be registered with the AICA and have EPDs for birth, weaning and yearling weights, ribeye area, hot carcass weight, marbling and fat.
