Gearing Up for the National Show xcitement and anticipation are building as Fall production sales and shows are taking place. I hope everyone is busy making plans to attend our ACA National Show & Sale as well as the general membership meeting and annual banquet. There are many activities planned for junior and adult members during the North American International Livestock Exposition. Louisville is always a good place to meet up with old friends and a great place to make new acquaintances and contacts. It’s also a world-class venue to display and market your genetics to a large and diverse audience from across the country. The ACA National Show is always one of the largest and most impressive of all the cattle breeds that are represented. We have a great list of consignments for our National Sale to be held on Tuesday, Nov. 17. I would

like to encourage everyone to study the catalog, visit with the breeders and plan to invest in the most cutting edge genetics our breed has to offer. Your Board of Directors and staff are busy preparing for the fall meeting held in Platte City and Mr. Ken Geuns, chairman of the Long Range Planning Committee, is working hard to prepare the agenda for their committee meeting to be held in conjunction with the fall board meeting. The Long Range Planning Committee is extremely important to the future of this breed association and we appreciate all the time, effort and foresight this group provides to enhance the preservation and longevity of the American Chianina Association. I hope you all have a safe and successful trip to Louisville and the staff and I look forward to seeing you all there!

all is here and things are going really well for the Chi breed. Many of the shows and state fairs had an increase in the number of Chi animals exhibited at them; some of them even had record numbers. The sales have been really good also. Chi cattle have been selling well and even better than some of the other breeds. This fall should continue to be prosperous for Chi breeders. There is a lot of enthusiasm in the Chi breed right now and we need to capitalize on it. Now is the opportunity for everyone to grab a hold and move forward. The momentum is building and we have to continue to build this momentum and benefit from it. There are more people searching for genetics to cross on their straight bred cattle than there has been in the past. Take this opportunity to improve your market share and get out there and promote your operation and Chi cattle!

Promotion Campaign The ACA is continually working on the new promotion campaign. The ACA booth is being redesigned and will be unveiled at the ACA National Show in Louisville. We also purchased a video camera, digital camera, LCD projector and a color printer to increase the amount and quality of advertising that we can do. We will be taking videos and pictures while traveling. These pictures and videos will be used at the ACA booth, on the website and maybe even on an ACA YouTube channel. The current technology allows us to do a lot of promotion efficiently. The color printer is being utilized to develop brochures and information for people requesting information on Chi cattle. We are also utilizing data that has been collected through the ACA Beef Derby and other programs to promote Chi cattle. Please let your board members know if you have any ideas for the promotional campaign. On another note, there has been talk of finding regional facilities to collect data on Chi bulls. We would like to find facilities that have the ability to collect individual feed intakes, because Chi cattle excel in feed efficiency. If we can develop regional “test centers” and get this information in front of the public then it will help our members sell more Chi bulls and more Chi cattle. If anyone is interested in this type of program or has an idea of places
we may be able to collect this information, please let me know. Another way to help promote Chi cattle is through the ACA Beef Derby. The ACA Beef Derby is a great way for everyone to promote their program and help them market bulls and females. It also yields a great opportunity to collect data for the ACA to promote the breed. Please be thinking ahead and maybe consign a pen of steer calves to the 2010-2011 ACA Beef Derby. Beef Derby Winners It is time to close out the 2009 ACA Beef Derby and announce the winners. This year’s contest was an outstanding event and was a very close race all the way to the end. This year provided us with more data and information and was a great learning experience for everyone involved. You cannot place a price tag on the valuable information the producers and the ACA are receiving on the sires of the ACA Beef Derby steers. With the many changes in the beef industry since the 2008 ACA Beef Derby concluded and even since the 2009 ACA Beef Derby started it has made a difference in the outcome of the 2009 ACA Beef Derby. Many input costs have increased, cattle prices have been stagnant to higher and the choice/select spread has been lower than in past years. The price of feedstuffs, fuel, fertilizer, land and many other factors have affected the beef industry in the past year. These factors are changing the amount of time cattle spend in the feedlot and the age that cattle are harvested. Decatur County Feed Yard has a program they use to formulate the best time to harvest their cattle that are currently on feed. The formula takes into account live weight, back fat, cost of feed, cost of gain and market price. The cost of feed to cost of gain ratio is very important this year with the cost of feedstuffs being higher; this was major factor in determining the harvest date for these steers. Micro Beef Technologies and Dan Dorn of Decatur County Feed Yard did the final calculations. Data collected by Decatur County Feed Yard was analyzed to calculate feed efficiency, carcass value and adjusted net return.

Travels A new edition to my editorial will be a column documenting travels; where I’ve been and where I’m headed. I try to visit as many people as I can when I am traveling and I’m sorry if I was close to your place and didn’t visit you. If this happens please let me know and I will try my best to schedule you in the next time I am in the area. I make every effort I can to visit as many people as possible in an area when I’m in that area. If you see that I am going to be in your area in the next few months, please give me call or email me and let me know that you would like me to stop by. This will help me with my scheduling and travel arrangements. I’m not going to list every stop, but I did make a trip to Eastern Iowa, Southwestern Minnesota and Southeastern South Dakota over Labor Day weekend to visit some of the private treaty sales happening at that time. If you are interested in what I saw, just give me a call or send me an email. I traveled to about 50 places, visited with many people and saw a lot of cattle. Greetings from Kentucky! Wow...it's already October. This year is flying by so fast. State fairs are mostly over and I hope everyone had a great fair season. I have to brag about one of our own youth at the Kentucky State Fair. Blake Quiggins had the Grand Champion Hog! Congratulations to Blake and his family. That's quite an accomplishment. I hope everyone got their North American entries in on time. I know we were cutting it close, but we got it done. I can't wait to see everyone there. Ladies, I hope you are all making plans to attend our get together during the week. Our luncheon will be on Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 11:30 a.m. This will be our annual meeting and membership drive, along with elections. We need all ladies involved, so please try and stop by. We've moved the luncheon back to Tuesday in hopes of getting a few more ladies. We won't be long and you'll have plenty of time to get back to the barns for the National Sale events also. We need new and fresh ideas from young and old alike. So, if you know of anyone who would be great to have in our organization, please personally invite them to join us. We have a fun time together and it's a nice time to get away from the barn for a little while. Don't forget to bring a little gift for our gift exchange. It's always fun to see what everyone brings. We also need to be thinking of someone to nominate for the Chi Lady of the Year award. We will vote on this during our luncheon and she will be recognized at the national banquet that night also. Don't forget our silent auction! This is our only fundraiser during the year and money raised helps support our activities, including the National Queen. Dig deep and let's see some great items! Lastly, don't forget the National Banquet on Tuesday night, Nov. 17. This is a great time to get together with breeders and have some great fellowship.
