VIEWPOINT
CHAROLAIS Yes. We still have opportunity.
Charolais genetics have added significant value
I
t’s an understatement to say that marketing beef cattle in 2020 has been a challenge. It would not be an overstatement to say it definitely isn’t for the weak at heart! Industry analysts and economists have changed modeling strategies multiple times trying to provide some data-driven, factual guidance to livestock producers across America. They all come to similar conclusions. Until we, somehow, some way, move through the COVID-19 pandemic and our domestic and global customers begin to return to a new normal, we aren’t likely to see market stability. While market volatility eventually impacts all production sectors, the greatest effect is on the commodity markets. The good news for Charolais and Char-influenced producers is the relevance of Charolais genetics in a value-added market. An analysis of sale prices on more than three million steer calves sold through Superior
Animal Partnership (GAP) moved the pricing average more than $15/cwt. It’s important to point out this particular data set was not driven by breed influence, but rather the perception of value based on other determining factors. In fact, since our global trading partners rescinded the less than 30-months requirement several years ago, one could argue that source- and age-verification premium is paid more as a confidence factor to a buyer. Simply stated, grid formulas reward a carcass that can meet a combination of weight, yield and quality without exceeding specific thresholds. A pen of finished cattle selling on a grid is graded and priced individually. However, the pen is also measured against the plant average for the week to determine all premiums or discounts earned. All premiums are above the average price for commodity cattle on the week they are harvested.
Breed influence is more important than ever before to pricing, but genetic information is equally important. Livestock Video Auction from 2010-2016, compared detailed and comprehensive pricing by breed and breed influence. Although we may not have had hard data, we’ve known anecdotally, that Charolais genetics have added significant value to cattle throughout the supply chain. Charolais-influenced feeder steers and heifers have topped the auction markets across the country for decades. Drive through cattle feeding country and the majority of cattle feeders depend upon black or white genetics. Most cattle feeders express a preference for the combination of the two. The Superior data documented the historical reporting that Charolais breeders and the industry have heard for years. In the category of breed influence on dollars per hundred weight (cwt.) difference, Charolais sired steer calves topped the category with an $8.12/cwt. average. Charolais had a $1.23/cwt. advantage over Red Angus sired calves, a $1.86/cwt advantage over Angus sired calves and an $8.12/cwt over Brahman influenced calves. Another Superior Livestock Auction pricing analysis looked at the premium average on program cattle sold from January through early September 2018. Source- and age-verified steers averaged $2.73/cwt., non-hormone treated cattle (NHTC) averaged $6.61/ cwt, verified natural beef (VNB) averaged $6.40/cwt. Global
Breed influence is more important than ever before to pricing, but genetic information is equally important. Expected progeny differences (EPDs), genomic data, and phenotypic information all influence the price commercial beef producers are willing to pay for registered bulls. Access to value-based marketing systems enable those progressive commercial producers to capture the added value in their calf crop, based on known quality, and support their decisions to pay more for commercial bulls and even Charinfluenced commercial replacements. Progressive Charolais seedstock and commercial producers are “market makers”, not “market takers.” Using information to breed better cattle and sharing information up and down the supply chain, open multiple marketing opportunities to add value and increase profitability or, at a minimum, manage risks. Depending upon which day of the week, or sometimes hour of the day, we read or hear the news, the reporting is based on commodity markets. Value-based marketing has a tremendous impact on nearly every category of beef cattle. From retained ownership and selling cattle on a formula pricing system to meeting the requirements for non-breed specific programs, Charolais producers still have opportunity to add value to their cattle.

AICA’s on-line system can answer many questions.
Log in with your breeder number and password: Get a copy of a certificate by holding your cursor on the “My Reports” tab and click into “Copy Certificate.” This is a quick way to get a copy of a paper. Duplicates of the original paper must be requested in writing and printed at the office. Keep track of your account by using the “My Account” tab. Click into “My Billing” and see the fees charged to your account. Your current balance is listed in the upper right-hand corner of the page. AICA does not have on-line bill pay. Your most current herd EPDs are located under the “My Reports” tab, click into “Herd EPD Report”. This report can be sorted in many ways, giving you the most updated information. Also under “My Reports” are Ultrasound Barn Sheets. These can be generated as a calving group or individual animals. Go to Ultrasound Barn Sheet by year for the whole calving year group or use the “Custom” report for just a few. Wondering how many signatures you have on specific AI sires? Go to “My Account” and choose AI Sire Signatures. Here you may give signatures on bulls you own or have signatures on. You may also view the list of bull signatures on file in your breeder number. Donor cow signatures are listed here also. The most up-to-date lab information on registered animals can be found using the “search” tool from the website home page. Search the animal by using the registration number, then click the animal line. Click the “LAB Results” tab to see all the lab results for that animal. You’ll find a description of all lab codes there also. AICA DNA Requirements
AI Sires used “out of herd” and all Donor Dams must be DNA tested before calves can be registered. AICA recommends collecting DNA samples during the donor’s initial

Cattle Producers Gather in Joplin for Annual Listening & Learning Session
by Linda Eck
P
redictability, consistency, uniformity, opportunity and versatility were buzz words at the American International Charolais Association’s (AICA) recent Listening & Learning Industry Session held Aug. 27 in southwest Missouri. Bringing progressive cattle breeders from across the country together, the informative session covered everything from genetic evaluations and ultrasound advantages; to bull selection, backgrounding and consumer demand for an afternoon filled with presentations by experts in their field. Following the formal presentations, those attending had the opportunity for one-on-one discussions in a relaxed atmosphere that included a steak dinner prepared by the Southwest Missouri Cattlemen’s Association and entertainment by up and coming country

Charolais Provide a Uniform Product, Added Yield and Quality
“It’s all about what goes into our pocket,” Jackie Moore, owner of Joplin Regional Stockyards and host of the event told those in attendance. “The cattle business is a struggle, and it’s all about making money.” “When you’ve just got any kind of a cow, put a Charolais bull on them and you create uniformity right off the bat,” said Moore, who also backgrounds cattle and owns part of a feed yard. “I love any kind of a cow with a Charolais bull on them, and uniformity in color makes them real easy to sell.” Jim Hacker, a cow/calf producer from Bolivar, Mo. provided testament to the use of “any kind of a cow” discussing
his use of Charolais bulls as a terminal sire on commercial crossbred cows. Hacker focuses on strong bull selection for his cow herd which is prominently comprised of cattle he has purchased that are “usually poorly managed wet bags”. Upon purchase, new replacements are taken home to Bolivar where they are quarantined and then serviced by Charolais bulls. “I try to buy something to improve them,” said Hacker, whose bull selection focuses on traits for Yearling Weight, Calving Ease, Marbling and a required Terminal Sire Index (TSI) over 200. Cows are wormed twice a year and bred for early spring calving beginning in February. Utilizing intensive grazing on fescue forage, Hacker says “management is key.” He culls hard, including all short breds. Cows that are in good shape and

Directors By Area
H
i everyone, I’m Madison Voet! I am your new AIJCA Junior Board Area 3 Director. I grew up in Home, Kansas, where I help out with our small commercial cattle and diversified crop operation, raising corn and soybeans. I am currently a Junior at Kansas State University, majoring in Agricultural Economics with a specialty option in Hospitality Management!
Q: What is your favorite Junior National contest? A: My favorite Junior National contest is the Cook-Off
Contest. I have always loved cooking and competing in this contest was so much fun. This year was the first year I have ever competed in this contest and it has become a favorite. My favorite memory is winning the Senior Cook-Off Contest this year in South Dakota.
Q: What accomplishment are you most proud of? Q: What or who inspired you to become a Junior A: One of my accomplishments that I’m most proud of is Board Member? being the 2019 Miss Charolais USA. This opportunity gave A: Ever since joining the Charolais association I have me the chance to be a mentor to the young girls within the association. Being a role model to these young women motivated me to want to continue my involvement within the association.
always wanted to be a Junior Board Member. Taylor Husz was who motivated me the most to be as involved in the junior association as I could be. She was also the one who inspired me to run for Miss Charolais USA.
Q:
Where was your first Junior National and Q: What advice would you give a junior member what was your favorite memory from it? just starting in the Charolais Breed? A: My first Junior National was in 2014 when it was held A: One thing I would tell a junior member is to not be in Hutchinson, Kansas. My favorite memory from that afraid to step out your comfort zone and make new friends. Junior National was getting to attend all of the conference I was told this my first couple of years in the association sessions and meeting so many new people. and am so glad that I made all those friends I have. Having connections across the United States is something Q: What do you look forward to most about the those you won’t regret having. Junior National Show & Leadership Conference? A: One thing I look forward to most about the Junior Q: What are you planning on doing after you National is getting to see all my friends that live in different graduate high school/college? parts of the country. The friendships you make at Junior A: After graduating college, I hope to stay in Kansas Nationals are hard to forget and I will always encourage and work for a local cooperative as a Human Resources younger members to step out of their comfort zone and go Representative or as a Grain Merchandiser. I am still meet someone new! undecided what path I want to go down but want to continue Q: What was your favorite show heifer and why? to still be a part of the agricultural industry. A: My favorite show heifer was OC Ms Kassidy 1247. She Q: What is your favorite thing about fall? was my first Charolais heifer that I owned and purchased A: One of my favorite things about fall is going back home from Obermeyer Charolais. I was really excited for the to help with fall harvest. I usually get to drive the grain cart new opportunity to be showing my first show heifer. I won which is always fun! Another one of my favorite things is Reserve Champion Charolais Heifer at the Kansas State Fair going to K-State football games, go Cats! in 2014 that was my favorite memory with her. 32

PICK OF THE HERD
What can I say about Lot 1 other than this is exciting! When Jim called and invited me to look through cows, I didn’t truly know what to expect but I couldn’t have been more unprepared for what I saw. Three hours later and we were still in the same pasture. Every time I looked, there was another good one. The pictures both here and on page 47 in the October issue of the Charolais Journal don’t do justice to this impressive set of females that have produced AI sires such as Big Time, Platinum, and Doc Silver. I encourage anyone and everyone to give Jim a call and go look at these yourself – you won’t be disappointed. Currently the herd is sitting with over 100 head of females to choose from with 68% in the top 25% for BW, 60% for CE, 58% for MB, and 42% for TSI. The NWMSU philosophy is that cattle need to be functional, low maintenance, performance directed, and they need to be eye appealing. If you are looking for that next great donor or even a fancy open heifer, this is the place to start. PRESENTED BY: Northwest Missouri State University, Maryville, Mo. | Jim Husz (660) 582-9151

This is what a hard decision looks like. You have a choice between matings of two of the most exciting sires of the last few years with one of the most dominant donors. Lot 14 is sired by LT Badge 9184 Pld, who stepped out on the scene this spring when he was purchased by NextGen Cattle Company, Satterfield Charolais, and Link Charolais as the high selling lot at the 2020 Lindskov-Thiel Bull Sale for $105,000. The sire of Lot 15 is the $92,000 PVF Ridge 7142 Pld, the exciting outcross performance sire who died prematurely and has captivated breeders since. Both matings are out of the proven Donor Dam LT Brenda 2184 Pld whose one-half interest sold for $29,000 in the 51st National Sale last year. Her progeny have consistently been at the top of the sales wherever they have sold. This will be a hard decision but whatever you decide the calves are sure to be great! producing remain in the herd. Also sold on the use of Charolais bulls, Max Martin of JX Ranch in Loving, Texas puts data to work for him when buying bulls. During his presentation, “Adding Beef Value with Bull Genetics in a Commercial Operation,” Martin credited the use of EPDs, 20 years of data in his record keeping and feed yard results for building carcass value by improving both yield and quality. “Our feedlot buyers want uniformity; health and disease immunity; and gain performance, along with carcass yield and quality that will perform on the grid,” noted Martin, whose ranch covers 13,000 acres in north central Texas. When asked about the genetic makeup of his cow herd, he admitted, “I don’t have a clue. There’s more variation in females than I want.” JX Ranch sells to US Premium Beef and Martin is an avid believer in the value of EPDs. “EPDs not only work, but they’re pretty darn accurate,” he said. When it comes to bull selection, Martin focuses on four EPDs - Yearling Weight, Ribeye Area, Marbling and Carcass Weight, while also paying attention to an animal’s TSI. “I am very happy with the progress 44
O C T O B E R 2020
Charolais breeders are making in marbling and we are very happy with our Charolais carcass data,” Martin said, adding that 35 percent of their premium comes from quality. Uniformity again hit a high note with Ken Danzer, a stocker and feeder cattle buyer from Manhattan, Kan. who joined the group by phone. “Charolais calves are in demand,” he said emphasizing the need for quality and uniformity. “You need calves that are going to weigh something, have been vaccinated twice and they have to have uniformity.” Danzer, who has purchased calves from the Hacker program in Bolivar, said Charolais cattle have a lot to offer, including calving ease, docility, increased weaning weights, better yield grades and when crossbreeding the hybrid vigor provides added weight. “Producers who do the work at home, they’re the ones making the money,” he concluded.
Finding the Right Market
Danzer’s thoughts on “doing the work at home” easily tied into information provided by Colt Keffer with CharAdvantage, an age and source verification program “with added benefits” provided through a partnership CHAROLAIS JOURNAL
between the AICA and IMI Global. “It’s a program you get out of what you put into it,” said Keffer, “A program to document and add value to Charolaisinfluenced feeder cattle and promote them to the appropriate market.” Serving as the AICA’s Director of Industry Relations and Sales, Keffer noted there’s a little more cost and paperwork involved for smaller seedstock breeders wishing to assist their bull customers in attaining added value. However, the program can also be used as an asset in promoting the value of high-end Charolais bulls. CharAdvantage gathers information about the calves and disperses information into a market atmosphere of buyers seeking that type of product. “We wanted to make sure we put the right information in front of the right people,” said Keffer who added the association’s TSI has become “a really pertinent number” for buyers. “The program has seen great success this year with a little under 9,000 head enrolled.”
Cowboy Math, Heritability and Genetics
“Genetic evaluation and selection tools offer cattle breeders the opportunity to make better cattle,” said Bill Bowman, of Method Genetics, LLC headquartered in
Saint Joseph, Mo., as he urged producers to do the “Cowboy Math” when it comes to making valuable decisions. He said it is important to understand heritability and to know what is a result of genetics and what is due to environment, when making breeding decisions. He cited the following heritability estimates: • Reproduction (low) <.20 • Growth (moderate) .20 to .40 • Carcass (high) >.40 Noting good technology of the Single Step program used to build the AICA’s Genomic Pedigree and Genomic Enhanced EPDs, he also stressed the importance of performance data in building accuracy. “Performance measures matter in Single Step,” he said. “Birth, weaning and yearling weights and measures as well as ultrasound data are all important.” Reiterating the importance of ultrasound data, Mark Henry, owner of Centralized Ultrasound Processing (CUP) Lab in Ames, Iowa, was on hand and supported Bowman’s push for collecting performance data, most specifically through the use of ultrasound to track carcass traits. “Charolais has the opportunity for improvement in the area of marbling,” said Henry, noting that more variation equals more heritability. “Using ultrasound, we can determine carcass
traits.” CUP Lab recently introduced new equipment to spread readings and better identify valuable traits. “With a greater spread on readings, hopefully that improves EPDs,” said Henry. “Charolais cattle have developed versatility,” Bowman said, crediting the AICA as the first beef breed association to develop a TSI to rank animals on profit potential. The TSI combines EPDs for BW, WW, YW, REA, CW, MARB and FAT into one single value which can be used in making selection decisions. Bowman also cited the breed’s progress in genetic trends. “While keeping birthweight level, growth traits have made tremendous improvement,” he said, urging breeders to understand the basics to create performance strategies. “If you sell by weight, look at growth and weight EPDs; if you sell by grid, look at carcass EPDs.” New prediction tools established by AICA and released this year include EPDs for udder quality. “Nearly 84,000 scores are used in the genetic evaluation of udder suspension and teat size,” Bowman said, noting both traits are moderately heritable and highly correlated. He also said the association is looking to add a Docility EPD, as breeders continue to provide chute scores on weaned calves.
The End Product - Consumers, Quality and Quality Grade
Quality, loyalty and consistency play important roles when understanding who your consumer is, according to Gretchen Mafi, animal and food sciences professor at Oklahoma State University. Appropriately, Mafi concluded the formal setting of the afternoon session by prompting those attending to factor in the end product when making selection decisions. “There’s a big difference in quality and Quality Grade,” said Mafi noting that the goal of Quality Grade is “palatability or eating satisfaction - tenderness, juiciness and flavor. Intramuscular fat depends on diet and genetics.” Quality grades are determined by intramuscular fat and maturity. “We’re at 80% Choice,” Mafi told producers, “It’s really a balance of ribeye size and weight.” Noting the value of Charolais for added carcass weight, she chided in with Moore’s earlier remarks. “Money drives everything. We’re still paid on price per pound. The overhead costs are the same for slaughter of a 600- vs. 1,000-pound carcass. A little more goes a long way.” “They’ll yield 60 to 65 percent on a 900-pound carcass, with 75 to 80 percent grading Choice” Moore said of his calves produced by Charolais bulls. “That earns $60 extra in yield.” “Consistency is key,” said Mafi, pointing out that many of today’s consumers are consciously seeking locally sourced beef produced through the use of sustainable practices. She encouraged producers to take advantage of the breed’s growth and efficiency and to understand their product.

AICA Board of Director Nominees Area 2
Lane Grau
I was born in 1962 in Clovis, N.M. My parents were A.L. and Maxine Grau. My dad was inducted into the AICA Hall of Fame in 2006. We first acquired Charolais cattle in 1965, so I have grown up in the breed. I have served as Regional Vice President, Young Cattlemens and Membership Chairman for the New Mexico Cattle Growers Association. I am currently on their Board of Directors. I have served on the Curry County Fair Board, the Frio Ridge Energy Board and I am a member of the Grady Baptist Church. My passions include my family of 4 kids and 2 grandkids, hunting, the outdoors and selling good productive cattle all over North America. I exhibited Charolais cross steers and registered heifers from age 9 to 21 in the junior shows at Clovis, Albuquerque and Roswell. Also have shown at Denver several times as a Junior and Open Exhibitor. I am currently serving as a commercial committee member and an activities member with the AICA. I promote the Charolais breed at our state cattlegrowers convention and local auctions and the NCBA. I believe I can add valuable insights from the commercial buyer’s viewpoint (80% of my business in commercial.) The Charolais breed is superior to any other breed for hybrid vigor and I will campaign that at Board Meetings. Our Southwest Region of the U.S. is dry and hot, so will press for moderation in the Charolais breed programs while still maintaining growth, calving ease and hybrid vigor.

David Hubert
Our family ranch was founded in 1958. I have been an active Charolais breeder since I purchased my first Charolais heifer 51 years ago. I am married to Shelby (Sweeney) Hubert and have three grown daughters Whitney, Lindsey and Hannah. We have three grandchildren. We have purchased part of my parents operation in 1996 and have continued breeding Charolais cattle. I have served Area 4 as Director from 2000-2002. I was the Board of Directors Secretary from 2001-2002. I have been President of the Kansas Charolais Association on two different occasions. I have served eight years as Logan County Commissioner. I also served seven years on the Kansas State Fair Board. We recently hosted our bull customer appreciation dinner which promoted cow/calf, cattle feeders and veterinarian supply companies all with a mutual interest in the Charolais breed. I grew up with Charolais cattle when we were importing Full French into the United States. I was heavily involved when Polled Charolais cattle first came into play in our breed. I have witnessed and have played a part in how our breed has evolved. I feel very strongly about our breed identity. The Charolais breed is functional, has breed identity and is respected by cattle feeders and packers around the world. It is our job to continue this course. I feel that I would bring experience, integrity and a level head to the board if I were elected, I would appreciate your consideration.
Area 6
Bob Jernigan
I am a Charolais breeder, real estate broker and live in Tyler, Texas. I have been married to my wife, Jody, for 48 years. We have three grown children and eight grandchildren and enjoy spending time together as a family. As a family we often vacation together and have “work days” where we will sometimes have all four generations involved around the ranch building fence, cleaning the barn or doing whatever it takes to keep the operation going. My parents, Robert and Modena Jernigan, purchased their first Charolais bull in
54
1959 for their commercial herd. My dad grew up on a large ranch in the Texas Valley and later in the Hill Country around Blanco and when he relocated to East Texas he knew he wanted to get into the registered cattle business. He looked at several breeds including Santa Gertrudis, Brahman and of course at that time Hereford and Angus were king in East Texas. There was a large cattle ranch a few miles down the road near Overton, Texas. We had seen those white cows while driving by on visits to my grandparent’s home and was curious what they were. We learned it was the Walker Wilson Charolais Ranch and upon further research of the breed ended up purchasing ten Charolais heifers. I was eight years old at the time and we have been breeding and involved with Charolais cattle since. Some of my earliest memories include a trip we made to Raymondville to visit one of the pioneer Charolais breeders, Ralph Hutchins, to purchase our first herd bull. Mr. Hutchins would become a lifelong friend to our family and instrumental in the building of our Charolais herd. Many of our top females in the early days came from the Hutchins herd. Having roughly 200 acres we have always been more about quality than quantity. The importance of who you purchase your cattle from was ingrained in me from the beginning. Quality animals from a reputable breeder has been the foundation of our herd and our philosophy on how to conduct our cattle business. In the early 1960’s our family was instrumental in the founding of the Bluebonnet Charolais Association. When the first sale was being organized our family was the one that volunteered to produce the sales catalog. This experience and the love of the breed propelled our family into founding Jernigan’s Charolais Sales Management. This allowed me the opportunity to meet breeders from all over the nation as well as Canada and Mexico and build my knowledge of the breed. During this time I met and got to know many of the founders of the Charolais breed and learn some of the history of how this great breed made it to America. Because of our interest in the history of the breed and its origins from France we were enthusiastic supporters of the sales in Calgary when some of the first offspring of the then recent imports were offered for sale. For a number of years I made the trip to Calgary each July for the Calgary Stampede and sale. It was during one of these sales we purchased our first Fullblood Charolais bull, Le Seuer Jr. From that time until the present our focus has been on breeding and maintaining a small herd of top quality Fullblood Charolais. The bulls we raise and sell today are destined for both the registered breeder and the commercial herds. Focus is on breeding bulls that are easy to calve, produce calves that put on the most pounds in shortest time and produce female seedstock that are good milk producers for the registered cow herd. At age 14 I went to AI school to learn artificial insemination and have used this ability over the years to introduce and keep some of the superior bloodlines in our herd. It is a honor to be nominated for the Area 6 Directory position and look forward to serving this area if elected. I believe the Charolais breed has a great future but also believe we have been out promoted by some of the other breeds. Awareness of our breed is my priority and education of our youth today about the benefits of breeding and showing Charolais is another goal. I have been extremely proud of the youth that have purchased show heifers from us and hope they will one day become future Charolais breeders. We have a great breed and by working together to promote Charolais we can expanded the opportunities and create a demand for our breed with the commercial breeder as well as the purebred breeder looking for seedstock. Charolais has been great to our family and this would be my opportunity to serve Area 6 and give something back to the breed that has meant so much to the Jernigan family.

I have been exposed to Charolais cattle my entire life. I firsthand realize the struggles and the amount of effort it takes to make a living from cattle. 100% of my family’s income comes from it. I am currently serving as the AICA Treasurer. I am a long-time board member, a current board member and past president of the Charolais Association of Texas. I want to help keep Charolais positioned as the breed of choice for cattlemen and help make it profitable for those involved.

Steve Peterson -
Steve has been raising Charolais cattle since 1976 and has shown Charolais cattle at all levels for the past 30 years. Located at Mtn. Grove, Mo., Steve has an anual bull sale and markets over 100 registered bulls yearly. Steve has not only been a board member of the Missouri Charolais Breeders Association but has served as President for 2 years. Steve has served on multiple AICA Committees and is the current Area 8 Director. As a director Steve hopes to help direct AICA to an upper level in the cattle business.
Jim Husz
Jim Husz was born and raised on a Southwest Iowa diversified crop and livestock farm. The foundation for Jim’s life was laid in 1976, when the Husz family purchased their first registered Angus cattle as an entire unit. An immediate love was formed that led to a successful career in the Iowa and National Junior Angus programs. Later, as a student at Northwest Missouri State University, Jim played a role in building and developing an innovative bull test facility and was on a successful livestock judging team. After graduating from Northwest, and a two-year stint at Mogck & Sons Angus Ranch in South Dakota, Jim began his 30-year career on the staff of his alma mater. During his 15 years as beef herdsman, Jim worked with several different breeds and breeders while managing the Larry and Velma Ehler Bull Test Facility. This, combined with the tutelage of Dr. C.K. Allen, refined his knowledge of performance programs and genetic contribution available within those breeds. During this same time, work was being done to grow and develop an innovative Charolais herd at Northwest, focusing on antagonistic convenience and carcass traits. This process ultimately led to a few bulls being placed into bull studs and the herd developing national prominence. For 20-plus years, all the cull steers and heifers from the University herd have been retained, fed, and carcass data evaluated, to help make improvements in the herd. Currently, Jim serves on the Breed Improvement Committee for the American International Charolais Association, and has helped on several subcommittees involving both phenotypic and genotypic data collection. Aside from the duties of managing the University Farm, Jim also raises a select herd of Angus and Charolais cattle with his daughter, Taylor.

Troy Bertsche
My name is Troy Bertsche. My parents are Steve and Julie. And my grandparents are June and the late Paul Bertsche. I grew up on our family farm, La Fraise Farms, in Flanagan, IL where they run a purebred Charolais herd and grow corn and soybeans. After graduating Flanagan High School I attended Illinois State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Business. I currently work for Ruff Brothers Grain Company, where I manage their Spires grain elevator. My wife Katie and I started Bertsche Farms in 2013 where we are currently raising our children Elsie, Grant, and Adam, Charolais cattle, and chickens. In addition to being your most recent area director, I am an AIJCA National Board alumnus. I was fortunate to have the privilege of serving as President during my time on the junior board. I am a past President for the Illinois Charolais Breeders Association. Also, growing up I was also able to hold each office at the state level as a junior. I look forward to the opportunity to get more into “the business side of beef”.
It has always been interesting looking back to see how the breed has been evolving to meet the times. Consumer preferences are ever changing, but the Charolais breed has a strong foundation to meet those needs. hope to give back to the association that has given me so much. Help steer our association in the right direction. And bring opportunity to large and small breeders alike.
Steve Zimmerman
I bought my first Charolais heifers back around 1980, when I became the assistant herdsman for the late Earl and Bernice Millikin at Elm Charolais Farms in Hartford WI. Even knowing we have downsized over the years we continue to take pride in our Charolais cattle. I was the Junior President of the Wisconsin and Ohio Valley Association’s when they were actually still around. I would like to see more people once again get involved in the Midwest again, in bringing back some Associations and to promote the shows that were very positive in the 1980’s.

I grew up working on my family’s Charolais ranch. My parents, Harlan and Dorotheann Rogers began raising Charolais cattle in 1959. My brothers and I showed cattle all over the southeastern United States. We all worked on the farm and did everything we could do on a ranch, from building fences to sorting cattle. After graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point and serving in the Army, I returned home and started running stocker cattle and helping my dad with the Charolais herd. In 2006, I was named by Beef Magazine as one of the Top 3 Stocker Operators in the United States. In 2008, I bought Rogers Bar HR, the Charolais side of our cattle operation, from my parents. This year Rogers Bar HR will breed a little over 600 head and sell close to 250 bulls. Annually, my family runs a little over 100,000 head of cattle from as far east as Florida and as far west as New Mexico and as far north as the Flint Hills of Kansas. Over the years I have seen how the Charolais breed has improved the cattle in the South and how they have a great future in the cattle industry. I had the privilege of serving as a director from 2006 to 2014 and currently sit on the Board of Directors. I have served on several of the breed’s committees. We have had several field days at our ranch to promote the Charolais breed. We also host several tour groups each year that visit Rogers Bar HR to learn about the Charolais breed and how our ranch and our cattle influence today’s cattle industry. We also host interns from across the world who come to Rogers Bar HR to learn about Charolais and ranching in general. Our last intern was from Germany. I’ve always wanted to be involved with the decision-making process of the board because I feel the board sometimes loses contact with commercial cattlemen and the commercial business. I think it is important that we as Charolais breeders remember what traits the Charolais breed offers the commercial cattlemen – fast growth, feed efficiency, and lean meat. We must keep focused on these traits because the purpose of the Charolais breed is to help commercial cattlemen make money. We must also remember that half of our calves are heifers, and our Charolais females must produce enough milk to raise heavy calves. The maternal traits of Charolais must not be forgotten. It is a balancing act between growth traits and maternal traits, but one that must be addressed. In the past the Charolais breed has gone from one extreme to another: too big to too small; no milk to too much milk. Each breeder needs to work on finding a middle ground that meets the customers’ needs and the breeder’s own environmental conditions. I feel that the breed needs to help members cut down on the extremes that we produce from time to time.

AICA Board of Director Nominees Frank Ellis
I am the fifth generation to raise cattle on my family ranch in central Alabama. From a young age, I had a passion for cattle and horses, and I grew up working on the same land that I currently work every day. I enjoyed calf roping, showing horses and working cows as a young man. After high school, I graduated from Auburn University at Montgomery and accepted a job with the State of Alabama Department of Human Resources, where I worked in Child Support Enforcement and Information System Development. I retired in 2005 and have been very thankful for the opportunity to pursue my passion full-time and devote more time to my cattle and horse business over the past 15 years. I am married to Linda Ellis, and we have two children, Kristen and Wilson Ellis. I have served as a deacon at Pintlala Baptist Church for 28 years and currently serve as chairman of the deacons. I am past president of the Alabama Child Support Association and the Lowndes County Cattlemen’s Association. I am currently serving as president-elect of the Southeastern Livestock Exposition. I am a board of director for the Lowndes County Cattlemen’s Association. I am a member of the American-International Charolais Association, Alabama Cattlemen’s Association, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, Lowndes County Cattlemen’s Association and the American Quarter Horse Association. After raising Beefmaster cattle for several years, I started my purebred Charolais business in 1999. I currently run about 45 brood cows and sell bulls and replacement heifers of the farm. With my cattle and horses I have always concentrated on quality over quantity, using the best genetics available, and I have held fast to that commitment to ensure consistently happy customers and develop longstanding relationships in the industry. Over the past few years, I have hosted several tour groups of young cattlemen and cattlewomen from Alabama Cattlemen’s Association and Auburn University. It’s brought me great joy to pass on my knowledge, expertise and enthusiasm for the business to the next generation of leaders coming up in the field. I enjoy telling people about our Charolais cattle and how they have kept my business profitable for years. I support my fellow breeders in the area by attending as many sales as I can. I have also sponsored Charolais classes at the Alabama Junior Beef Expo. I have been blessed to meet many wonderful people through my Charolais business. I would be honored to have the opportunity to serve as Area 12 Director. I am a staunch advocate for the Charolais breed and, if elected, I would enjoy the chance to actively support our members, expand our membership and help promote our industry.
Wayne Bennett
Having grown up on a cattle farm I have been in the cattle business my entire life. My father raised Herefords which I continued on my farm. In the early 80’s I bought a Charolais bull. I was so impressed with the calves that I went to a total Charolais herd and the rest is history. One highlight was being able to own Vanessa D029. Her offspring continue to be a part of my herd. Oak Hill Farm has an outstanding herd of registered Charolais cattle. I am active in my local community is many ways. I am proud to be the president of the Dawson County Farm Bureau. I work closely with my local board to promote agriculture in our community and throughout the state and nation. I have served the Farm Bureau in many committee roles in our state and attend the National Convention each year. I was appointed by our governor to serve as a member on the Regional Council of the Coosa-North Georgia Waters Planning Council. It is our job to work with other councils across the state to be sure Georgia has unlimited supply of fresh water for the future. This is so important for all of our daily lives and especially for those of us in the cattle industry. I am an active member of Concord Baptist Church where I attend services and Sunday school as well as being a member of the church choir. I serve as the vicepresident as well as the treasurer of the Georgia/Florida Charolais Association. I am instrumental in the planning and carrying out of the annual Charolais sale we sponsor each October in Georgia. I serve on the AICA Financial board.I support the AICA by selling and purchasing Charolais cattle across the country. Attending those sales, friendships with other Charolais ranchers and seeing our beautiful country are highlights of being a part of the Charolais family. Oak Hill Farm was honored to be a destination for the cross country farm tour. 56

What a pleasure for fellow growers to visit our farm and enjoy a wonderful dinner together. It was attended by ranchers from 30 plus states as well as other countries. I believe Charolais cattle to be the best cattle in the industry. The fellow ranchers I have met and been associated with are honest hardworking people. It would be an honor and a privilege to serve on the AICA Board of Directors for Area 12.
Area 14 David Clark
I live in Denton, Maryland, with my wife Sharon. My family’s involvement with the Charolais breed was started in 1962 by my father Jim Clark and I have continuously owned Charolais breeding stock since 1968, when I was 8 years old. I presently operate a herd of 25 Purebred females and also put in 10-15 embryos in a recipient herd each year. Plans are to expand this herd and also expand a family owned retail beef sales operation. I recently concluded a 35 year career in Agricultural Lending with MidAtlantic Farm Credit and during that time I have been a Loan Officer, Credit Analyst, and a Vice President for the company. I received a B.S. Degree in Animal Science from Virginia Tech in 1982,-and was on the Livestock Judging team there in 1980. I greatly enjoyed being an AIJCA member from the early 1970’s to the early 1980’s. I attended a number of the Junior National events and served as a Director on the Junior Board for a two year term. My regional Charolais involvement is through membership in the Colonial Charolais Association and I have served as President, Secretary/Treasurer, Director and Junior Advisor. I have attended many Junior Nationals with my sons, as they were active in the AIJCA for a number of years. On the local level I have served as President and Treasurer of our County Fair. From an early age I’ve been a student of the Charolais breed and have observed and participated in a lot of its history. I would like to serve as a Director to put that knowledge to work in advancing the breed in the future. I’m very open to input from the membership and feel that I can put my cattle and business skills together to help the AICA keep moving in a positive direction.
Michael Doran
My family and I own and operate a Charolais operation in Whiteford, Maryland. We breed, calve and raise cattle for our market and sell beef to the local community. I also am the current vice president of Harford County Farm Bureau, am a board of director for our county fair, a co-chair of our 4-H livestock sale, and a Trustee at my church. Both of our children were active in 4-H showing Charolais Cattle and we have traveled to the last several AIJCA Junior Nationals. I am a Colonial Charlolais and AICA member. Becoming a director would allow me to bring more active Charolais interest to Area 14, and a unique perspective to the National Board. I want to share my passion for the breed and help the breed grow in the north east while representing their ranches and herds.
