CHAROLAIS The 50th National show...
Not Just Any Celebration!
L
ongevity is almost always a good thing. We look for it in the cattle. We can measure longevity and place an economic value on the trait. We typically don’t think much about the longevity of a breed association or place an economic value on its history. Maybe we should. Beginning Thursday, October 25 through Saturday, October 27, AICA will celebrate a milestone in our history with the 40th National Sale and the 50th National Charolais Show. Albeit difficult to quantify, the value of exposing the best cattle our breed has to offer to the livestock industry for more than a half century is priceless. Generational beef producers (that’s code for those of us that are “more mature”) know every major breed has followed industry trends. Until the late 1960s, cattle were small and fat. Our only
history that, on the surface, is comforting and is fodder for positive conversations among breeders. However, the behind the curtain history is the concrete that continues to secure the breed’s wide industry acceptance. Past presidents, AICA staff, fieldmen, board members, progressive breeders, every cattle feeder that has fed a pen of Charolais influenced calves, academics—the endless list of people that have taken risks, studied, researched and been willing to share information have a notch etched in the history of AICA and the breed. It’s time we celebrate. Let’s “do it up right” and celebrate 50 years of bringing the best cattle our breed has to offer to the bright lights of a show ring. Let’s celebrate 50 years of seedstock producers that have been willing to dedicate their time and energies as board members and officers. Let’s celebrate more than 50 years of fiduciary
National events, like the upcoming 50th National Show, have always been a showcase for phenotypic progress. selection tool was phenotype. The next decade produced cattle that producers came to realize were too big and too inefficient to be sustainable, but definitely were leaner. We still didn’t have many scientific tools to make informed breeding decisions, but artificial insemination, embryo transfer and a large influx of European imported breeds created a paradigm shift in beef cattle production. Fast forward to today and many breeds that made a short-term impact three or four decades ago, didn’t possess the genetic staying power to be sustainable. One inarguable fact in beef production is if the cattle don’t work for every customer past your ranch gate, a breed association isn’t likely to celebrate a “Golden Anniversary”. If the breed isn’t widely accepted in the commercial cow-calf sector, the feedyard or at the packer, longevity is not possible. National events, like the upcoming 50th National Show, have always been a showcase for phenotypic progress. During a few eras, the shows also exposed phenotype that we presumed to be progress, only to have the commercial sector send us clear signals that we were moving in a direction counter to the needs of commercial producers and the demands of retail customers. Subsequent shows provided the platform for breeds to indicate a willingness to make directional phenotypic change. Longevity has given AICA and the Charolais breed an amazing
responsibility, in good and not so good times, that now places your association on a firm financial foundation through wise investment decisions. Let’s celebrate 40 years of national sales as succeeding generations will offer seedstock genetically capable of producing offspring meeting today’s industry demands. Let’s celebrate the enormous investment of all those involved in every small success that makes the Charolais breed more relevant today than the pivotal day in 1969, when Dr. Don Good slapped the rump of “Conoco”, a Charolais-Angus and the first crossbred steer to win a major show. Join us for the Shindig, Thursday, October 25, at the AICA office for dinner and the 2018 Hall of Fame inductees’ presentation. The 2018 Royal Breeders Bull Classic will be held Friday, October 26, 10:30 a.m. at Hale Arena. You don’t want to miss the 40th National Sale, Friday, October 26, beginning at 2 p.m. at the Wagstaff Sale Center. The events will culminate with the 50th National Show, Saturday, October 27 immediately following the 8 a.m. junior heifer show at Hale Arena at the American Royal. We have extended an invitation to every living past president to join us for our 50th national event. We extend the same invitation to you to join us as we celebrate the longevity of the people, the breed and the entire beef industry.

AICA Sire Selector Tool
Learn how to use the AICA Sire Selector Tool by viewing the instructional video posted on the AICA website and YouTube. Utilize the AICA Sire/Dam selector to identify genetics according to EPDs, TSI index and additional search parameters. Display a Photo of Your Herd Bull or Cow on the AICA Online Registry
For a fee of $25.00, AICA will upload the animal picture to the their page on the AICA Online Registry System. Each time someone pulls up your animal on the website, the picture of the animal will appear. To have your herd bull or cow included, you must supply a picture in JPEG format. Please contact the AICA office or send an e-mail to mschoen@charolaisusa.com. New 50K Technology at a Lower Price
From now until the fall board of directors meeting in late October 2018, OR until we reach 2,000 new samples, the cost of a genomic test (GGP BOV50K) through AICA has been reduced to $25. This test includes parentage. AICA continues to offer the horned/polled test at $45. Export Your Data for Sale Catalogs
Under the “tools” tab, you will find a new “Data Export” button. This data export gives you the flexibility to export data on animals in your herd and use those data files in your own management packages. You can download and save the files directly to your computer in a CSV (can be opened in Excel) format. There are many options within this feature including selecting the type of animal to export and specific data. AICA DNA Requirements
AI Sires used “out of herd” and all Donor Dams must be DNA tested before calves can be registered. AICA recommends collecting DNA samples during the donor’s initial flush. Check the animal’s record to make sure the DNA work has been done before submitting registration papers. DNA kits are specific to the animal being tested. Contact Marilou Wegner to request a kit. AICA rules require signatures on bulls and dams you do not own. Signatures can be submitted online, fax, mail or e-mail. Sales of Bred Females
Females sold bred must have all breeding information included to complete the transfer. Service date and appropriate sire signatures are necessary.

Cheryl Lux • Cobb Charolais Ranch
Born in 1954, Havre Montana. Both parents are from ranching families, raising Herefords and Angus, near Chinook, MT. Lived in Los Angeles area while father worked for United Air Lines. Family returned to Montana in 1969. Earned BA from Sweet Briar College, Virginia. Worked as insurance claims investigator in Western Washington before marrying John Cobb in 1982 and joining Cobb Charolais. We have two grown children, Adam and Elizabeth. I am responsible for bookkeeping, record keeping/registrations, advertising, bull sales organization, catalogs, as well as general feedlot/ ranch work as needed. Montana no longer has a local or regional breed organization—too few people stretched over too many miles. Supported local 4H programs with Charolais market steers. Have attended several international congresses/meetings, a trade delegate to Central America to help market Charolais. Have served past two years as Region 1 Director for AICA. Promotion of our breed as a vital component of our nation’s beef production should be a primary thrust of our breed organization’s purpose. The impetus for the ‘Listening and Learning’ sessions, which have been so successful in providing an informational and marketing platform for us, grew out of discussions held two years ago in the Commercial Committee meetings. We need to continue our efforts to reach out to the feeder and packer business who can voice their need for more Charcross calves to our commercial producers: “the biggest problem we have with Charcross calves is we can’t find enough of them.” In the Far West, commercial cattle are still the major piece of the livestock industry pie. We also need to continue our research efforts into genomics and other technologies to render them accurate and viable tools for selection. We owe it to our customers to offer them the most efficient animals we can raise so they can have a better opportunity to stay in the business. We can’t control taxes and international tariffs, or investors monkeying around with beef’s pricing structures, but we can make decisions that affect our breed’s future position in, and despite, the economy.

I live in northeastern South Dakota where we have a small Charolais herd including 50 spring calving cows and a group of fall calving cows. My wife, Krecia, and I have three children, Kiera is a senior at Oklahoma State University, Kadon is a sophomore at South Dakota State University and Korbin is a freshman in high school. Our children represent the fourth generation involved in agriculture on our place. I am the publisher of The Cattle Business Weekly, a regional livestock publication. As a publication, our focus is on the commercial cattle industry along with those involved in the breeding and marketing of seedstock. With that, I am fortunate to work with some of the best folks in the world, those folks involved in the cattle business. We have a number of regional sale barns that run weekly reports with us, in addition we report on over 300 bull sales each spring. I became active in the Charolais breed in the mid 1980’s as a member of the AIJCA. I attended my first Junior National in St. Paul, MN in 1986 and have attended nearly everyone since. From a junior member to a staff member to a senior member over the past 32 years, I have earned a great appreciation for Charolais cattle and what they can offer to the beef business. I am extremely proud that our three children have been very active within the AIJCA. That involvement has no doubt help mold them into what they are today. When asked if I would run for the board, my response after some thought was that I would serve on the board. The Charolais family has been very good to us. I look at it as an opportunity to give back to something that has given us a number of opportunities. The Charolais breed has a bright future within the beef industry, from the heterosis advantage in a cross-breeding scenario to the breed identity that can’t be duplicated or confused the cattle speak for themselves. As an AICA board member, it will be exciting to help the breed and association move forward.

Dennis Adams • Outfront Cattle Service
Born and raised in New Mexico. I attended college at Eastern New Mexico 2-years and 1 1/2 year at New Mexico State U. I have lived in Texas the last 33 years, 14 years in College Station, TX. I returned home from college to work after my father became ill. A member of the Christ United Methodist Church in College Station. Leased my cows to and ran CJ Ranch in Leona, TX for 3 years, (1983-1986). Started Outfront Cattle Service in 1990. I own a few donor cows and partnership cattle with other breeders. I have two daughters and their husbands that are very active in Agriculture and 4-grandkids, that are beginning great show careers and one, a super basketball player! Sharla is the editorial editor of the Show Circuit, her husband, Wes Ishmael, writes for Beef, Cattle Today, and Clear Point Communications. Carrie does my ads and Web site, and with husband Josh Brockman, raise show pigs very successfully, including breeding the Champion Pig at 2017 Houston Livestock Show. Both my daughters were very successful in the AIJCA and in stock shows all over the U.S. Sharla was AIJCA President and Herdsman of the Year and won 2-National Champions & 1-Reserve. Carrie won every Showmanship contest she entered in the AIJCA, and was successful with her heifers, but showed more steers. She won the Champion Steer Shows at Ft Worth, San Antonio, and Houston. She also had Champion Pig in Ft Worth and Reserve in Louisville. Started with percentage Charolais heifers from Llano, TX., as an FFA project in 1962, and purchased my first purebred cows in 1964 from Mack Braly, Oklahoma Charolais Ranch. I achieved the FFA American Farmer degree with my Charolais project. Awarded most outstanding Ag Student 2-years at ENMU. Elected President of the ENMU Ag Club. My brother still uses our first AICA Membership # 1227 for his herd. I showed many Charolais from coast to coast with several Champions, including Reserve National Ch bull, Courage 423. A highlight was showing the Champion Bull and Female at Denver one year. Voted the AICA Herdsman of the Year. Had the first Charolais bull to win the gain test at the Tucumcari Bull Test, and later sired steers that were carcass tested, enabling him to become a PRI Golden Certified Meat Sire status. Helped found the Charolais Association of TX and served as first President. I completed a term as National Director in previous years. Was active on AICA Show committee and Rules and Ethics committee. Started Outfront Cattle Service in 1990 and created several sales including the Rancher’s Choice bull sale in its 26th year in 2018, and the Sale of Excellence, which just finished its 19th year. I’ve also been involved with many other great sales that have promoted the breed all over the U.S. I think we need to do a better job of promoting the Breed. We continue with a small numbers of members when we have one of the best products out there. I think we should have worked more with some of the other breeds, such as, the Red Angus is now working with Hereford breed. There have been studies done in Florida that shows a cross with Charolais will make you more profit than any other combination, regardless of the cow, why don’t we promote that? I’ve just recently seen a graph from Superior Video showing Charolais calves have out sold all other breeds on thousands of calves the last few years! I think we should study a method of helping our bull buyers list their Charolais Cross calves online with AICA to help buyers find them. We need to be promoting all of these aspects with real numbers and testimonials! Performance, growth, feed efficiency, and dressing percent are all traits that should enamor us to the beef industry, but we need to do a better job of promoting these strengths!

AICA Board of Director Nominees of Jacksonville, Texas. In addition, we exhibit bulls annually at the San Antonio All Breeds Bull Show & Sale. I view our responsibility as a director as being a voice for the area we serve. In addition, it is important to sponsor activity and efforts that promote and advance the Charolais breed in a very competitive environment. The role of our association, as well as each active member, should be to improve the quality, reliability, visibility, perception and demand for Charolais Seedstock, both bulls and females, on a local, regional, national and global level.

My wife Joyce and I operate a farm in central Iowa raising corn, soybeans, hay and 40 head of spring-calving Charolais cows. In 1981 I started a commercial cow-calf operation using Charolais bulls purchased from the Iowa Beef Expo. I was always impressed by the growth the Charolais sired calves showed compared to the other breeds. From our firsthand experience, I knew I wanted to produce purebred Charolais bulls that commercial cattleman would like to use. In 1994, we purchased our first Charolais cows and transitioned to a purebred herd forming ML Lewis Charolais. My experience in the Charolais breed has grown to become much more important to me than only our bottom line. I believe the AICA is one of the best organizations in the nation, and I plan to work to ensure that. My family has participated in numerous Charolais events across the country and promoted the breed at a state and local level. I recently served as the 2018 AIJCA Junior National Planning Committee Chairman with a great group of Iowans hosting the annual event. I am a past president and current Vice President of the Iowa Charolais Breeders Association and a Charolais representative and past President of the Iowa Beef Breeds Council (IBBC) – which coordinates the annual Iowa Beef Expo. I have enjoyed my experience with the AICA and would like to continue serving the membership.

I own and operate a cattle farm in North-central Arkansas. We run registered Charolais and commercial cattle. My wife Lori and I raised our boys (Will and Matt) on this ranch. We have been involved in all aspects of the cattle business our entire lives. I have been active in my local cattlemen’s association and Arkansas Charolais association. I have been a member of the AICA for over 30 years. I am currently serving as the Area 9 director. I have also had the privilege of serving as the Association Secretary for the past year. I believe the Charolais breed continues to have a bright future. I believe the association staff and leadership should continue their hard work to insure this. It would be a privilege to continue to serve on the board directors.

years in the Charolais business, we sold registered bulls to commercial breeders and mostly feeders. As the herd improved we continued to sell bulls and started selling a lot of seed stock in a multi-county area. I have served on the Kentucky Charolais Association Board, numerous committees in Kansas City before becoming a director, I have been fortunate enough that you have elected me as your Kentucky AICA director. The most important thing I have done in the Charolais breed, is I started the Central Kentucky Charolais Classic in 2006. It has turned into the largest Charolais consignment auction in the country. It is and always has been open to ALL Kentucky breeders, and we usually have consignors from 10-12 states. We have sold over $2.5 MILLION dollars’ worth of Charolais cattle since we started the sale. We have been honored to make so many friends in the Charolais breed from numerous states. I strive to participate in as many sales possible from a buying standpoint. On average I participate in at least 10-15 sales a year. The best thing about being involved in the Charolais breed is my family’s participation and the lifelong friends we have made. In the last 3 years I feel very fortunate to have served as your AICA director. In that time, I have been instrumental in keeping the national sale in Louisville once every four years. I have worked on reducing the cost of and increasing genomic testing; and I have tried to get answers to any question and/or concerns you all have brought to my attention. I have asked that any Kentucky breeders interested in being involved in the national association contact me about serving on committees. I have also included the Kentucky association by consulting them on issues and asking their opinion on handling those situations. I am only a phone call away. If reelected, I will continue to support the issues that help Kentucky breeders and the Charolais breed as a whole. There are a lot of things that go on in Kansas City that I do not agree with, one is the amount of money we spend in advertising promoting the Charolais breed to the packers. I believe we need to spend more advertising money promoting our breed to commercial breeders, to show them the benefits of the Charolais breed. As long as I am your area director, I will fight to ensure that the national sale stays in Kentucky once every 4 years and is not permanently moved to Denver, Colorado as many in Kansas City believe it should be. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve as your director for the last 3 years, it would be an honor to represent you again.
I am a real estate broker and farmer, from Hardinsburg, Kentucky. I enjoy spending time with my family and watching UK basketball. My wife Carol and I have been married for 27 years. We have 3 children; Nikki is finishing up her last year of law school, Stacey is working full time now that she has finished up her associate degree; Sean is a fifteen-year-old freshman at our local high school. I grew up on a cattle and grain farm in Central Kentucky. I got my first cow, on the first day of first grade. I continued to farm in high school and while I was attending Western Kentucky University to obtain a degree in real estate. I ran a commercial cattle herd until 1999, in 1999 I went to buy a Charolais bull and ended up buying a small herd. Within a year I had converted my commercial herd to a completely registered herd. We run 100 momma cows on our farm. The first few
My wife Cathy and I recently celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary. Our family has grown from two children with the addition of five grandchildren. If we had known grandchildren were this fun, we would have had them first! After many years in the dairy business, we transitioned our farming operation from dairy to commercial cattle and once more transitioning into a Charolais seed stock producer. We maintain a herd of 75 Charolais cows and are currently implementing an expansion phase of the operation. In addition to the cattle operation, we also maintain a commercial construction firm for steel erection. Our children also operate a metal fabrication manufacturing business, which we offer support and jointly work together on special projects. We have spent many hours on the road supporting local and national shows and sales, several Junior Nationals and numerous activities sponsored by the AICA, from National sales to trade shows, to international travel advocating on behalf of the Charolais Association. As the children began their own careers, we focused mainly on female and bull sales. We have been involved at the local and national level in many sales as a buyer as well as seller. I originally became involved with the local Kentucky Charolais Association and attending several meetings. Eventually, I was elected to the board, served on several committees, and as KCA President. As I became more involved in the AICA, I served on the activities committee and eventually as the Area 11 director. The Charolais Breed will always thrive and find its place in many herds for various reasons. It is up to those who serve on the board to promote the breed, provide tools and programs to support the membership, manage finances and be a united voice of its members. This must be done at a cost that is reasonable for all of its members. This united voice will continue to keep promoting the great white breed and maintain the relevant position it currently holds in the beef industry. Having the privilege to serve on the AICA board before, I have experienced the great mix of talent, personalities and ideas that continues to move the breed forward.

Naomi Farmer • Cross Mountain Cattle
Fifteen years ago, my husband Rob said, he wanted cattle. Next thing I know we have purchased two females out of the Morley Dispersal and we are on our way. We are currently a 50 head cow/calf operation 30 minutes outside our nation’s capitol in Virginia. I am proud to say that I have learned to AI and look forward to breeding season. It is exciting to see how your choice of bull works on your cow, which makes calving season my favorite season. Six years ago, we started the Quest for Quality Multi-Breed Bull & Female Sale, highlighting Charolais bulls, and other small breeders, like ourselves. We started this sale, because we felt there are several bulls that deserve to be working on purebred and commercial herds and small breeders like ourselves needed a sale to help get a small breeders genetics out there. We are looking forward to our seventh year and the quality just keeps getting better every year. On a local level, I have worked with several 4-Hers with their steer and heifer projects, not only those who have purchased Charolais/Charolais cross steers from CMC, but those who are just looking to become more knowledgeable with cattle. I have also worked with several local cattlemen to increase their knowledge on Charolais cattle and the purpose of breed. The Angus breed and black-hided cattle is predominant in my area and I am working to inform local cattlemen that the Charolais of the past is not the current Charolais breed. We invite cattlemen to visit our farm to walk through our Charolais herd and show them Charolais are not crazy and have also become moderate in frame. I have also shown in several county fairs to help get the Charolais breed seen for several years. On a regional level, I have served as Secretary of the Virginia Charolais Association and have helped run and manage several Charolais sales. I have also shown in the Maryland and North Carolina State Fair, along with Keystone International Livestock show in Harrisburg, PA. On a National level, I have been a committee member with the AICA for the past three years and look forward to working more on the national level. This year, I was able to experience my first Charolais Junior National and look forward to helping with next years. I decided I wanted to run for Area Director, because I want to make a difference. Our area is comprised of a lot of small breeders and I want to make sure those breeders feel like they are being heard. I know several small breeders who feel like the only avenue they have to sell their cattle is the stock yard, because they cannot compete with bigger breeders who sell in purebred sales. Well, we all know that is not true and that is why we started our own sale to include small breeders. As a director, I would work to get more small breeders involved in “big” purebred sales, along with more crossbred cattle. Please don’t take offense on this other issue, but I think everyone knows, most cattle farmers are older in age and the youth are disappearing. I currently work with 4-Her’s in my county and I would like to work with the breeders in Area 15 to get more Charolais youth programs in this area. We all know there are more issues that need to be covered and I don’t have enough room to cover them all. I just want the Charolais breeders of Area 15 to know that my door and ears are always open for comments, concerns, or to just talk Charolais. Know that I will take those comments and concerns to the National level and work hard to make a difference for the breed and the members of Area 15. It would be an honor to represent Area 15. 22

Dan Eversole • Virginia Tech University
Dr. Eversole has been involved in the purebred cattle industry for 60+ years. He grew up in southeastern Ohio on a purebred Angus and Holstein farm showing steers and beef heifers as 4-H projects. Dan graduated from The Ohio State University in 1973 with a B.S degree in Animal Science and then was recruited to pursue a doctorate program at Michigan State University investigating muscle and growth development in feedlot cattle. Upon receiving his Ph.D. degree in 1978, he accepted a teaching position at Michigan State and was heavily involved in teaching several undergraduate courses and coaching very competitive livestock judging teams. In order to become more integrated in the purebred cattle industry, Dr. Eversole accepted a teaching/research position at Virginia Tech in 1984 to become the Director of Beef Cattle Programs as well as to continue training and coaching college students for livestock judging competitions. Over the past 35 years, he has taught 10 different Animal Science courses at Virginia Tech and also oversees the purebred teaching herd of beef cattle, which consists of Charolais, Hereford, Simmental, and Angus breeds. His ‘signature course’ is Livestock Merchandising which involves the Hokie Harvest Sale. Since its inception in 1995, this course has enrolled 1,680 students, sold 1,048 head of beef cattle and 381 horses, and has generated over $2.8M for the Department of Animal and Poultry Sciences. Dan has authored numerous articles in scientific journals, extension publications, breed magazines, and cattleman newspapers. Dr. Eversole has worked closely with state breed associations and extension personnel serving in leadership roles and coordinating/hosting field days, breed association boot camps, junior beef round-ups, state livestock judging contests, and state fair competitions. In addition to his classroom teaching, he advises 70+ undergraduate students in a 700-student major, serves as the sole advisor for the Beef Leadership Council, and has a heavy focus on career placement with graduating students. My first indoctrination with Charolais occurred when I interned in the early 70’s at Riverwood Farm in Powell, Ohio as an undergraduate student at Ohio State. I worked with the show and sale cattle for this prominent Charolais operation and assisted with their fall production sale. As Director of Beef Cattle Programs at Virginia Tech, Dr. Eversole was instrumental in launching the university’s herd of Charolais cattle in 1998 by working closely with the late Mary Howe Di Zerega of Oakdale Farm, who at the time was President of the AICA Board of Directors. The establishment of this herd of beef cattle certainly raised awareness of the Charolais breed throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. Since then, Dan, along with his farm manager Chad Joines, has entertained the Virginia Charolais Association field day during the summers of 2002 and 2016. Together, they have exhibited Charolais cattle at surrounding state fairs as well as consigning cattle at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, KY. In collaboration with the Virginia Charolais Association, Virginia Tech has hosted every Fall Improvement Sale in Blacksburg, which now has totaled 17 sales. The ‘VPI’ prefix is nationally known in Charolais circles at all levels. VPI Free Lunch 708T was bred and raised at Virginia Tech and later became a roster member for Select Sires in 2008 where he was used heavily in the AI industry on purebred and commercial females. In addition, LOF/VPI Abraham 48 is another featured AI sire for Bovine Elite, LLC and currently offers mating flexibility for many maternal lines today. Dr. Eversole has previously represented Area 15 on the AICA Board of Directors from 2005-10 and during that tenure served on the Breed Improvement, Rules and Ethics, and Intellectual Committees. He currently serves as the Vice President of the Virginia Charolais Association. The American-International Charolais Association recognized Virginia Tech in 2017 as the Seedstock Producer of the Year. There is tremendous value in having purebred cattle like the Charolais breed at land-grant institutions to better serve our clientele through the missions of education, research, and outreach. Dr. Eversole worked closely with AICA in hosting the second Listening and Learning Industry Session in July, 2018 at Virginia Tech. Over 65 Charolais producers and stakeholders from 10 states listened to presentations on adding value to Charolais-influenced cattle. A competitive judging contest of three Charolais classes with challenging scenarios and EPD information was arranged by Dr. Eversole and stimulated much discussion for those who participated. I welcome the opportunity to serve as your Area 15 representative on the AICA Board of Directors and am asking for your vote in this upcoming election. I feel that my tri-fold emphasis on breed improvement, good business practices, and visibility at cattle events has allowed me to contribute at the state level and I would enjoy the

opportunity to implement those same practices on the national scene. Our national association continues to provide many progressive programs to our membership, regardless of herd size or location, in order to maintain breeder enthusiasm and improve genetic progress. A prominent breed association like the Charolais should focus on the following four main goals: 1) Serve our membership in a professional and timely manner and do so on a solid financial foundation. Communication, service, and timeliness are key elements for such things as animal registrations, breed inquiries, and genetic evaluations in order to promote our breed. 2) Provide more events and activities to our junior membership for their development in leadership, stockmanship, and marketing opportunities. We need to continue to support and invest in junior programs since these members will become our future breed leaders. 3) Promote and market Charolais genetics to the commercial sector. It is critical to establish a viable marketing network through AICA to assist all members in expanding individual market share and in spreading the word about the increased value of Charolais-influenced feeder cattle. 4) Work with cow/calf producers to promote and improve Charolais seedstock within the beef cattle industry. There are many events and activities available to the AICA membership to showcase our breed. We, as Charolais members, are very fortunate that the AICA staff and Board of Directors have many projects already in place that help to accomplish these objectives. My desire is to assist in the continuation of this success and to further promote this great breed of beef cattle. While there is a need to continually improve our breeding stock through research and cutting-edge technology such as DNA testing and ultrasound, we stand to gain the most by capturing a larger market share. This can be accomplished by an expanded awareness of the benefits of the breed through increased marketing and education. I appreciate your support and promise to bring a balanced view from Area 15 to the business of the AICA Board. Thanking you in advance, I am Dan Eversole.
I was born and raised in Central Virginia in Nelson County. Since 2003, I have worked for my wife’s family’s farm, Seamans’ Orchard, a fourth-generation farm in Nelson County. For the last ten years I have worked full time for Seamans’ Orchard. Some of my responsibilities on the farm include the production of the Strawberry, Blueberry, Cherry, Pumpkin and Apple crops and beef cattle. My greatest joy and passion is my personal herd, Hat Creek Cattle Company. Hat creek Cattle consists of 30 head of Registered Charolais cattle. We pride ourselves in using top quality genetics by artificially insemination all of our Charolais females. I also enjoy helping to manage the day-to-day operations of our 275 head Commercial Angus and Angus Cross Cow/Calf operation at Seamans’ Orchard. Currently, I am the Eastern Director for the Virginia Charolais Association, serve as a Charolais Director on the Rockingham Beef Expo Board, and serve as a Director of the Amherst/Nelson Beef Association, which is our local Beef Association. I have been an active member of ANBA since 2008. For the past several years, I have enjoyed participating in the local and out of state Charolais Sales events. I have had the pleasure of meeting and becoming friends with a number of Charolais colleagues and have found the network invaluable to advancing our business forward. It is a great honor to be nominated for the Area 15 Director position. I gladly accept this nomination. If elected, I feel some of our focus should be on continuing to promote awareness of the overall Charolais breed as well as increasing partnerships on the Commercial side. I feel that it is important for Charolais to have a larger presence in Commercial herds. “More Pounds More Profit” isn’t just a slogan it’s a fact! I will always make myself available and open for suggestions and concerns regarding our industry. I will keep our members informed as to any issues being discussed before the board and I will take great pride in being your Director for Area 15.

Showing Charolais, pigs and lambs, hunting, fishing, and hanging out with family and friends are the activities I enjoy the most. I love to go to livestock shows, but I especially love the road trips that are involved getting to them.

appealing to commercial cattlemen, and how do you see our breed influencing the cattle industry?
A: The Charolais breed is very appealing to commercial cattlemen by having outstanding growth and performance. This is appealing to commercial cattlemen because fast growing calves result in large weaning weights. The cattlemen are the able to make more profit for the higher pounds when weaning. Listening and Learning Session in Blacksburg, VA
Value-Based Grid Opens Doors For Increased Profitability by Linda Eck
I
nsight into value-based feeder cattle marketing brought a lot of topics to the table for discussion at the 2018 Listening and Learning Session held July 14 in Blacksburg, Va. Although it was just one of the Industry Segment discussions held that day, it covered a lot of important issues aimed at helping producers bring more dollars to their bottom line. Carcass data, genetic potential, health concerns, networking options, customer service, quality grades and the benefits of high yielding cattle were among the subject matter as Brian Bertelsen vice president of field operations for U.S. Premium Beef (USPB) took to the podium explaining operations and goals of the fullyintegrated, producer-owned beef processing system. Addressing both Charolais seedstock and commercial cattle producers, Bertelsen presented an overview of how U.S. Premium Beef, an owner of National Beef Packing Co., the fourth largest packer in the United States, operates in conjunction with Qualified Custom Feedlots and Qualified Seedstock Suppliers to increase the quality of beef and longtime profitability of cattle producers. Approximately 20 to 25 percent of the cattle harvested annually at National Beef come through USPB. Cattle marketed through USPB are purchased on a valuebased grid pricing system. “We harvest over 700,000 head of cattle each year on

our program,” said Bertelsen, who through his position in field operations has the opportunity to visit with producers throughout the market. He also noted that as USPB owners, producers become packers. Key Elements of USPB include: • Value based pricing led by economics, not on the averages • Information transfer of individual carcass data at no additional charge to those who provide electronic identification back to the farm • Ownership in processing - companies working together as owners in the packing process • Freight credit on fed cattle that come to the plant • Livestock and meats consulting Producers can become a part of USPB by becoming an associate member. This requires a $100 one-time fee and every animal that’s marketed through USPB needs to have access to delivery rights. “There may not always be complete and total access because we do have a limited number of those delivery rights that are out there,” said Bertelsen. “If they are available to lease, you can lease them today at $6.” Lease rights can also be purchased through feedyards and seedstock suppliers who have availability and through private
CHAROLAIS JOURNAL
purchase from individual producers. Headquartered in Dodge City, Kan. USPB, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2017, is owned by independent producers from all segments of the industry fully committed to its success. Several branded beef products make their way through the program, but Bertelsen was quick to note, “We’re not going to tell you what breed to raise.”
Understanding the Grid
Explaining the grid system used by USPB when marketing fed cattle, he applied the analogy of a bullseye to make his point. “Our job is to stand here with a target for people to shoot at with their cattle,” explained Bertelsen, pointing to a bullseye in his slide presentation. “You hit the bullseye you’re gonna make a lot of money. You land way out here you’re going to get less. But that bullseye is pretty good sized.” “They don’t’ have to be one exact certain kind of cattle,” he continued. “Some cattle make a lot of money on yield or dressing percentage. That would be Charolais-type cattle. Some will make a lot of premium on Quality Grade; Angus cattle tend to do that, on average, pretty well. And, then there are some cattle that are a combination thereof. They might be a good blend of all of the above.” With economics of the marketing system driven by consumer demand, he emphasized the importance of having a demand for
products. In order for USPB to offer producers a premium for cattle, there has to be demand for the end product. Consumers “have to be willing to pay enough more per pound and a large enough percentage of the total carcass for there to be a total pile of money to offer back with the whole trickledown economic theory.” As producers are seeking increased value in their calves, “Some are doing it through quality grade, some are doing yield and some are doing both and really hitting a home run,” he added. He then revealed that over the last two or three years, USPB averaged about $50 per head premium – across the board – for cattle marketed through the program as compared to cattle sold on the cash live market. Knowing where value comes from is one of the benefits of participating in the USPB program. “Each and every year, except for one, quality grade has been the biggest bar on that chart,” said Bertelsen, pointing to a chart in his presentation reflecting a breakdown as to where value comes from on the USPB Grid. “All things related to marbling – quality grades, prime, choice, select, branded beef marketing and all those things combined.” “The second biggest bar almost every year is yield or dressing percentage. For our company, last year that was about $20 to $21 per head,” he added, described yield as “a confusing topic.”

“I don’t like to call it a premium, from the standpoint that within a given week our grid is the same for all cattle. We don’t pay more for this set of cattle just because they yield better, but what they can do is they can generate more total dollars by selling carcass weight at a carcass price versus live weight at a live price. “I don’t like to call it a premium, from the standpoint that within a given week our grid is the same for all cattle. We don’t pay more for this set of cattle just because they yield better, but what they can do is they can generate more total dollars by selling carcass weight at a carcass price versus live weight at a live price.
Genetics and Management Important to Attaining Optimum Quality
A huge believer that genetics and management play a large role in the success of cattle producers, Bertelsmen told the crowd representing ten states that “most cattle can work on the grid, if managed properly,” noting that cattle should be managed from conception on to attain optimum quality. “Genetics is a big factor that sets their potential,” said Bertelsmen. “Everything below that is management related… things we’re gonna do to maximize that potential.” After genetics, his list of Top Five Quality Influencers was rounded out with nutrition, feedlot management, health and growth promotants – all management related practices. He reiterated their importance by noting that cattle should be managed to meet these goals by: • Feeding them right and managing nutrition. • Feeding to the proper days on feed and the proper end point. • Keeping them healthy. Dead cattle don’t grade well on the grid and calves that have been sick and recover, don’t do very well. • Pushing for growth, with a warning to be a little wise with growth promotants. Breeds have their strengths and their weaknesses. And, he pointed out there are obvious things, regardless of breed that don’t work when feeding cattle. “What doesn’t work is if you’re marketing on our grid or any grid like ours and you’re trying to sell them green or early with limited days on feed. You’ve got to feed long enough to create pounds and quality together to generate more dollars in the cash market,” he advised. “If you’re selling your cattle green because prices are high, you probably don’t want to go to a grid because you just haven’t created that value to be better than the industry average.” He also indicated that if cattle are too big or too heavy when placed in the feedlot, there’s a higher likelihood of heavyweight discounts. The practice of “roughing cattle out through the winter and not pushing them very much at all” is another practice that Bertelsen reported “doesn’t really work.” “That’s going to be a phase in their life when they’re not 36
O C T O B E R 2018
building up any marbling, he noted. “Marbling does happen prior to the feedyard, or it can if we manage them right; and the cattle that are really superior, we start with the end in mind – we build them genetically and manage them from literally conception on to express those traits as much as possible.” “Value-based marketing is a little bit like other new technology and new tools, Bertelsen explained. “If you’re willing to accept it and make that work and learn about it you can really excel at it and do quite well. That’s where I come in to help you learn without making a lot of mistakes right off the bat.” Bertelsen encouraged producers who want to market their feeder cattle by establishing some of these types of relationships, to visit uspremiumbeef.com for a list of Qualified Custom Feedlots with a full page of information regarding each one. “Call and talk to them about what you have and what you would like to do in developing a relationship with them and getting some data back,” said Bertelsen.
Networking Opportunities for Seedstock Producers
Specifically addressing the value of these relationships for seedstock producers, Bertelsen acknowledged that while many may not market a lot of feeder or fed cattle, setting up a relationship with a feedlot opens the door for breeders to retain ownership of calves not developed for the bull market and extend opportunities for bull customers to market their cattle either directly or through a buyback program. Retaining ownership or developing a buyback program with customers allows seedstock producers to capture the most value and get data back on the calves. Aside from capturing additional value, a major benefit of participating in the USPB program is obtaining harvest data. Carcass data, feedyard performance and health records are all available at no additional cost to producers who send cattle that have been tagged with Electronic Identification (EID) ear tags to the feedlots. “Each herd has strengths and weaknesses,” said Bertelsen in presenting seedstock producers with the opportunity of helping their customers produce better calves. “By finding out how those calves are doing, you can help them maintain the strengths and determine where the weaknesses are and provide them with the right genetics to fill their needs.” “Sometimes we learn that it’s more management related issues that we can make improvements on. Back in college I was taught marbling was at the end of the feeding period. Well, it’s not. It’s a lifetime achievement.” He then referenced data on fetal programming, noting, “If we manage that cow well, then the calf in her is going to do better on the rail, if we provide the cow with better nutrition.” Breeders receiving data can also use that data to improve their own program, as well as sharing it with the AICA to help improve overall breed quality. “Sharing of data is very valuable,” he added, indicating carcass data, feedlot performance and health records can be obtained. He also made reference to the need for improvement in the area of feedlot health. “We need help in improving the health of cattle in our industry,” he said. “I look forward to the day we can genetically select for health. That will help the industry a lot.”
CHAROLAIS JOURNAL
He then continued on the benefits of genetics in creating cattle that are more profitable in the feedlot. “In today’s world of being a genetics supplier there are tools out there where, if they (breeders) use the tools, just about everyone can produce superior cattle,” he told the group. “But, what separates one breeder from the other is customer service.” “As an industry we’ve made lots of improvements in quality grade. I believe this is a long-term trend,” said Bertelsen. “The better we can make it and the more positive eating experiences we can provide the better.” But, he also noted, “It’s important to remember there’s economic value in improving all traits. Charolais do yield well and the general increase in the reward and the economic value in that is valuable 52 weeks out of the year. The frustration with the quality market is it’s not always there, since it is impacted by economics of the current market. If we can put the two together, and you can manage your cattle to hit the normal highs, then that’s even better.” “All cattle can do a lot of things,” said Bertelsen expressing the importance of understanding the strengths and weakness of breeds and individual herds. “Knowledge is power. Then you can start to manage it, improve it, and refine it through management, nutrition and genetics all put together…and it works!”
