CHAROLAIS Stay Present
Many opportunities to collaborate!
October is one of the busiest months of the year on the AICA calendar. This year there are 36 events listed for the month of October. At least 25 of the events are fall sales, and the remainder are state and regional shows. The busy month begins October 2, with the AICA Listening & Learning Industry Sessions, held this year at West Virginia University. The sessions will primarily focus on the value of data and the role of data in determining and improving feed efficiency. Among the always anticipated events are those held during the 122nd American Royal Livestock Show and Rodeo. The Royal Breeders Bull Classic will kick off the American Royal Charolais events at 8:00 A.M., Friday, October 22. The Royal Collection Sale will be held at 1:30 P.M., also on October 22. The American Royal Junior Charolais Heifer Show and National ROE Show will start at 8:00 A.M. sharp!
passed to producers as leverage improves. While costs will rise over the next year or so, the revenue side of the equation should outpace expenses allowing profits to increase through 2022 for most operations. Drought conditions will hinder margins in some regions. Once Mother Nature provides relief, the higher, long-term trend of the calf market will support significant improvement in the bottom line for most operations.” Often, grassroots producers believe they have little to no influence over any directional change in the cattle markets. The unspoken nugget in most of the current analytics is the added value that higher quality cattle are having in the market across every production and processing sector. Mid-September U.S. Choice-Select spread was $37.73 compared to $13.51 during the same week in 2020. The 10-year average is $10.68. One grid reported another $33.00 for USDA Prime. The take home message is cattle with known genetics, good health, adequate
Your breed association recognizes the fundamental obligation to be present, engaged, curious, efficient, and proactive. Being present in a diverse industry that appreciates the value of our breed is the least we can do. A breed association calendar is more than a listing of events. The full calendar is an accurate indicator of commerce, breed acceptance and industry relevance. A full calendar illustrates industry connectivity. Livestock shows have long been a phenotypic proving ground and the opportunity to publicly display our breed. Equally as important, shows are family events and are often teaching moments for the next generation. The 2021 fall calendar includes educational events, meetings, and opportunities to collaborate and be present within the industry at all levels. Almost every agricultural analyst and economist agree the cattle production and marketing cycle has bottomed out and trending upward. There’s been much discussion and media coverage about imbalance in cattle markets, largely due to catastrophic disruptions in the processing sector. CattleFax, the beef industry’s most reliable data resource reported in their August 2021 Trends, “CattleFax has laid out several times that the calf market is expected to trend higher into the middle of the decade. Tighter supplies are a big driver, but also historically strong beef demand supported by inflation will keep plenty of dollars flowing into the supply chain and be
nutrition, and a past history of performance are more valuable regardless of end point. Charolais stakeholders have every opportunity to take advantage of a bullish market. Across the board, the Charolais breed has had an incredible track record in feed yards for more than a half century. More than two decades ago, as selection and breed improvement tools became available and the accuracy proven, Charolais seedstock producers bought into the importance of data, beginning with Whole Herd Rewards. Fast forward to current, and AICA members have access to a thorough suite of performance and genetic selection tools, including Single Step genomic evaluation. In the future, the competition for higher quality cattle is likely to become even more aggressive. After all, consumers are proving their insatiable desire for beef with their pocketbooks. Charolais seedstock and commercial producers relying on Charolais influence have the tools. Your breed association recognizes the fundamental obligation to be present, engaged, curious, efficient, and proactive. Being present in a diverse industry that appreciates the value of our breed is the least we can do.

ONLINE TIPS
Transfers cannot be done on-line if the paper has already been issued. The original paper must be returned to AICA. Animals registered on-line can be held in the system for transfer or print later. Many members find it helpful to hold all the newly registered animals in the system. No need to chase papers around. When using a non-Charolais parent, follow the example given on the entry screen. For a non-Charolais female type FNF-XXXX, for a non-Charolais male type FNM-XXXX. You may also use breed codes to indicate the breed of the non-Charolais animal but be sure to use 4 digits (example: FNM-ANAN). We can add the pedigree of your other breed animal but need a copy of the pedigree 1st. The fee to add a pedigree is $20. Be sure to click the “register” box and the “save” button at the bottom of the registration screen if you want the animal registered. The registration number will pop up in the middle of the screen or you’ll get an error message telling you what boxes you have missed.

Scott Bradshaw
My name is Scott Bradshaw, my wife Amy and I live in Twin Falls, ID and we have two grown children, son Casey and daughter Christy married to Parker Henley. We are also blessed with a new grandson named Norman who recently turned one! I am a third-generation cattleman, grew up on a commercial angus cow-calf ranch in Eastern Idaho. In the late 80’s my father purchased a second ranch in Spencer, Idaho and it included a herd of SimAngus cows that were bred to Charolais bulls. This was a new cross for our family, and we were pleasantly surprised by how much performance and value the Charolais breed added to our calf crop. It was a turning point for our operation, and we searched Idaho for registered Charolais bulls, however, they were hard to find at the time. My dad told me if I could raise registered Charolais bulls then he would buy them from me. In 1988, I made friends with a long-time Charolais breeder, Harvey Coffman, and he sold me my first group of Charolais heifers, HCR Expectation 269 daughters and my start in the Charolais business. I quickly became active in the Charolais breed with my first set of calves. We added the bulls to our show string and exhibited annually at state fairs in the Northwest, Red Bluff, the NILE, National Western and occasionally in Louisville. When my daughter was old enough to start 4-H, we wanted her to show Charolais. We bought her first heifer from our friends in Montana and she was out of Eggleston’s Charolais Misty 607. From Christy’s first show at the NILE in Billings, MT to our first junior national show in Wichita Falls, TX, we were hooked, and our kids learned to network at a young age and made lifelong friends through the AIJCA program. My wife and I are proud parents of two former AIJCA area 1 junior board directors. It was my goal to establish a Charolais division at the Idaho Beef Expo and our state fairs. There were some years we literally had to enter every calf in the barn to meet the minimum head requirement to show as a breed. Our enthusiasm for Charolais spread and the entries increased as more Idaho juniors started 4-H Charolais breeding heifer projects. I established the Idaho Junior Charolais Association in 2009 with Maria Brown. We worked hard to find ways to help families with travel costs to attend the junior national shows. From raising funds to cover the fuel expenses to traveling as a group. One of my proudest moments is when Kade Beck, who we “converted” to Charolais, was elected as an AIJCA area 1 junior board director and on his last year was recognized with the AICA Fieldman’s Workhorse award. More recently, I have worked with the new leadership at the NILE in Billings, MT as the Charolais Superintendent and we have resurrected the Charolais division. In addition to bringing the show back, the breeders of the Northwest asked me to represent them at an annual meeting in Kansas City and ask the AICA Activities Committee to move the Class A ROE show from the Central Washington State Fair to the NILE. The breeders felt the NILE was a more central location and would improve member participation. The Activities Committee agreed to move the ROE show to Billings and the Charolais entries and competition continue to grow today. Thinking back to 1988, and I knew I made the right decision to try something new. I’m more excited that 33 years later the Charolais bull is still the ideal cross with the black cow. I applaud Charolais breeders being committed to maintaining the identity and strengths of the breed. I believe this passion has positioned our breed to grow our share of the beef industry. I believe this can be accomplished through key breed promotion, genetic improvement and commitment to developing the next generation of breeders through youth activities. We have accomplished a lot over the last two decades, I am proud but know we can do more as a breed and make a bigger impact in the beef industry with the Charolais advantage.
Howard Rambur
Once upon a time, there was a 4-H project that started with two half-blood cows and a purebred Charolais bull that got completely out of hand. Today, we are running 250 purebred Chars and 100 purebred Angus. I am also involved in RC Feedlot and RC Cattle Trucking, Irrigated farming and numerous acres of dry land grass a positive is that all of my daughters and grandchildren being involved in the ranch. 26
O C T O B E R 2021
Way back when, I served as a board member for AICA. My daughters and grandchildren have shown Charolais cross steers through 4-H with a lot of success in our local fair. Numerous Montana Steer Merit awards, two years ago Tana’s steer was the top Montana Steer Merit animal out of 1100 head. This year my grandson received Reserve Steer out of 92 head with his char cross steer. Charolais breed has lost a lot of market share to the fact that black hair is paid premiums at the bigger processing plants. It doesn’t do any good to pat ourselves on the back of what the Charolais breed will do for a commercial operation. We will have to think outside the box to get involved somehow in the food industry to demand the tenderness and meat qualities that the Charolais breed offers to get a program in place.
Scott Eaton
I am the son of Lee & Connie Eaton. I grew up working on the family ranch, Eaton Charolais. Graduated from Montana State University with a degree in Ag Business. While attending MSU, I played 5 years of college football. To this day, I am actively involved in MT Stockgrowers and NCBA. I am married to Emily Eaton & father of Boe, Max, Levi, Cy, Isaac, & Emery. Active in coaching, school activities, 4-H, and within the community. Eaton Charolais owner/operator with the Eaton family. Tremendous experience in the cow/calf, feeding, finishing, and value-added programs. Involved on the national, regional and local level. Montana doesn’t have an association. As a youth, I showed Eaton heifers at the MT Charolais shows. Promote the Charolais breed thru local/regional ag youth activities including sales, FFA, 4H and various community events and activities. As a Director I would encourage the promotion of the breed and place more emphasis on the commercial business side of Charolais. The unique color of a Charolais cross sets it apart from the rest of the black breeds and should be used to further promote the breed. The promotion of the breed to commercial cattleman by the Association, would increase demand for Charolais bulls. Capture additional value by doing a branded Charolais product locally, regionally and/or nationally. We need to stress calving ease, vigor at birth, with accelerated growth through weaning. Striving to maintain outstanding feedlot and carcass performance through genomics and traceability (birth to plate). As an association, we need to maintain the reputation and promote the value of Charolais cross cattle in the industry.

My involvement with Charolais began in the late 1980’s as a member of the AIJCA. The first Junior National I attended was in St. Paul, MN. As a staff member of AICA, I was fortunate to attend most of the Junior Nationals during the 1990’s and early 2000’s. I am proud that our, Krecia and my, children Kiera, Kadon, and Korbin have followed in my footsteps and became active members of AIJCA as well. Currently our family has a herd for Charolais cows producing bulls for commercial cattle producers. In addition, our family has a regional agricultural publication, The Cattle Business Weekly which serves seedstock and commercial cattle producers. The Cattle Business Weekly is represented at over 300 production sales annually. Aside from our families involvement in the AIJCA, our children have exhibited cattle at a number of Regional and National Shows. Kadon and Korbin have each exhibited Charolais cross steers winning our State Fair Market Beef Show! In 2020 Kiera, Krecia and I were fortunate to be able to assist our state hosting the Junior National Show and Conference in Brookings, SD. I am running for my second term on the board of directors and I currently serve as the secretary of AICA. I think “Charolais” is in exciting times and we have a real opportunity to become the “terminal bull” of choice! And, I plan to do my part in making that happen!

I am co-owner and co-publisher of the Southern Living Standard newspaper since 1989. I am a Co-manager of the San Antonio All Breeds Bull & Commercial Female Sale since 1992. I am also Co-owner of SLS Range Land Inc, with a focus on crop insurance, particularly the Rainfall Index Policy. I have served on the board for Area 5 since 2017 when Larry Ludeke became President. I have served as an officer since 2018 and currently serve as Vice-President. This will be the final consecutive term that I am eligible for. When I was asked to serve on the board, I had a pretty good idea that our breed would soon be transitioning due to the impending retirement of our current Executive Vice President. Neil Orth has served this breed and it’s board very well. It is my hope that we transition smoothly into this new leadership with my final term.

Our family farm and ranch was established in 1884 and is located in central Iowa. My wife Jeanne and I are the 4th generation to ranch here and we have 3 adult children. I was raised in Illinois and grew up feeding cattle and raising hogs along with farming row crops. After graduating from the University of Illinois in Agricultural Engineering in 1978, I took a job with John Deere and moved to here to the home place near Baxter, Iowa. Farming and ranching was always done on side until I retired from John Deere after 36 years in 2014. During my career at Deere, I served on the Iowa State Mechanical Engineering Advisory Board and the Texas A&M Cotton Engineering Advisory Board. I retired from Deere as the Global Engineering Director of Combines, Cotton Pickers and Cane Harvesters. Here at home, the first 30 years we had a commercial cow herd, we started using Charolais bulls in 1988. As the kids grew, they had purebred Charolais 4-H and FFA projects and we made the decision to retain females and raise bulls for our herd sires. Today we have a registered Charolais herd and raise purebred Charolais seed stock and farm row crops. From a community standpoint, I serve on the local Fire and Rescue Advisory Board and as a Fire District Trustee. Through activities such as, the kids showing cattle, having membership in the AICA, attending Charolais shows and selling Purebred seed stock to both commercial cattlemen and purebred breeders we have had a long time interest in the breed. Beginning in 2020, I became the Area 6 Director for the Iowa Charolais association. Through this activity, I have enjoyed learning more about the AICA and the Iowa Charolais Breeders association. The Charolais breed has really changed since that first bull I bought 33 years ago. In the last 10 years Charolais genetics have improved at a rapid rate and I believe this is the new normal. Knowing there is so much more opportunity to expand the use of Charolais genetics within the Industry, it’s exciting to think about the possibilities. I’m interested in becoming more involved to help promote the breed. Looking ahead, I want to spend some of my time contributing to the AICA’s future direction and planning. I have no doubt the road ahead will be even better for Charolais breeders as long as we listen, work together and take action.
Dale Hecht
The Charolais breed has been my passion my entire life. My family has been involved in the breed since 1967 raising purebred seedstock for the commercial and purebred cattle producer. I was given my first Charolais female at the age of 10 and have been actively raising and breeding cattle ever since. When I married my wife Jill in 2003, we started our own herd and breed using exclusively artificial insemination and embryo transfer. We have hosted female sales and have recently moved to an online format selling cattle and embryos across the US and Canada. Our three daughters Dallee, Georgia, and Josie are now also actively involved
in the herd and are active members of the AIJCA. Off the farm I work for Syngenta as a Commercial Lead for the Digital Ag Solutions division supporting the digital products in the 12 states in the Midwest. I am the current President of the MN/WI Charolais Association and have also served as Vice-President and on the board of directors for several years. I have served on the Activities and Finance Committees for AICA and have mentored several young people through the MN/WI Junior Charolais Association. I believe the AICA board of directors has a very difficult job in balancing the needs of the membership while operating a financially viable breed association. It is my belief that along with record keeping and supporting Important advances in genetic testing, the main role of the association is to find new and innovative ways to promote the Charolais breed to purebred and commercial producers alike.
Brett Terhaar
My wife, Rachael and I live in Winterset, IA. I am a veterinarian by training. Practice work included cow/calf clients and feedlot consulting. I have spent a number of years being involved in vaccine research and development for animal health companies. Our family has a herd of Charolais cattle and we market bulls private treaty into commercial herds in IA, NE, MO and KS. We feed our cattle and those purchased from customers in commercial feedlots. This allows us to evaluate our genetics as well as have a real world understanding of the needs of the cow/calf and feedlot segments. I am an active board member of the Iowa Charolais Association, active Charolais breeder and promoter. Private treaty bull sales. In my lifetime I have seen a number of breed associations come and go in their popularity. Some breeds did not carry the genetics needed by the US cattle industry. Other breeds may have had the genetic merit but those managing the breed association were not able to pivot towards a successful future. This is an all-important time for the Charolais breed. Genomics and phenotype data management, breed promotion with an overall eye on the feedlot industry and an understanding of consumer preferences are keys to continued success of the Charolais breeder. Board Members are important to the association to steer it towards sustainability, financial health, and give accountability and assistance to the executive director.
Chad Zehnder
A second-generation breeder, our family has raised Charolais since the late 1960’s. Along with my wife Cameo and daughters Sydney and Natalia, we operate Zehnder Cattle and are partners in Zehnder Waage Partnership, based in central and northwest MN. I received my Master’s and Ph.D in beef cattle nutrition and management from the University of Minnesota and in addition to the cattle operation, I am a cattle nutritionist for Purina Animal Nutrition. Growing up with the Charolais breed, I was active in the AIJCA and served as President. I am a member of the MN-WI Charolais Association where I have been on the board of directors for several terms. I have previously served on the AICA Activities Committee, AIJCA Advisory Committee and currently serve on the Commercial Committee. A strong believer in being active in and supporting the organizations I am involved with; I look forward to helping the AICA aggressively position the value of Charolais genetics in the industry. Not only to the commercial cow calf producer, but down the line to the feedyard, packer and retailer. In addition, the AICA needs to continue to explore and invest in technologies and services that position not only the association, but its members to be successful in a changing and competitive industry.

AICA Board of Director Nominees We market our bulls to commercial cattlemen in Southwest Arkansas, Northeast Texas, Southeast Oklahoma, and Northwest Louisiana. I am the treasurer for the Arkansas Charolais Association. My children have exhibited Charolais cattle on local, state and national level. As a commercial cattle producer, as well as a purebred breeder, I see daily the impact of Charolais genetics on the beef industry. I would like to help continue to grow and promote the breed. The breed has made tremendous progress improving calving ease and birth weights, while continuing to increase growth and carcass traits.

I graduated with a degree in Agricultural Economics from Oklahoma State University. I have been a new car dealer Buick, GMC, Jeep in Springdale, AR for 30 years, Member of AICA since 1998, past president of Arkansas Charolais association, served on AICA advertising committee, worked on the local fair board and currently in 18th year as board member of the Rodeo of the OZARKS. My business experience outside agriculture I feel would be an asset as director for the Charolais association. I have been retired from the automotive business and feel that I now have the time to commit to the Charolais Association to make it a better and stronger for all members and work hard as a director for the members of area 9. Thanks for your consideration.

I was born and raised in Keithville, LA. My family has been in the agriculture business for generations. My grandafather was a dairy farmer, father had a large plant nursery and we are currently in the landscaping business. We have always had commercial beef cattle but the last few years, we have been converting over to registered Charolais. I have been married foir 14 years and have 3 daughters. My daughter began showing Charolais cattle 3 years ago and going to shows all over Lousiana and East Texas. There are just not many Charolais cattle showing up. I have been talking with other families at these shows that show Charolais and we would love to see more from our association. I want to become a director to serve our producers. The Louisiana association is inactive and there is not a Louisiana Junior Association. This is disturbing to me because so many ranchers use Charolais bulls to cross breed cattle in our area and they could get so much more from an active associaiton. Also by starting a Junior Association, we can reach out to the future of our breed to make sure we have a future. Thank you for your consideration.

Harrod Farms is located in Frankfort, KY. My wife is Beth Harrod. I have been blessed with three wonderful children, and two great son-in-laws. Becca & Chase Schell, Jenna & Cody Burke, and Jacob Harrod. We have been married for 32 years. Charolais cattle caught my eye at a young age. After admiring the extra growth that a Charolais bull gives its offspring we had to have one. We started using Charolais bulls on our commercial cows in 1976. I bought my first registered Charolais female from Larry Graham, Bowling Green, KY in 1980. When you walk in to our house you don’t have to look very hard to see our family loves Charolais cattle. We enjoy the challenge of trying to make them better. I have been involved in National, regional and local levels. I have served on the Open Show committee in 1990’s and served on the planning committee for 2021 Junior Nationals. Currently I am serving on Activities committee, on the KY Charolais Association, and serve as the Charolais representative on KY Beef Expo Board. Board Past president of the KY Charolais Assoc.

I was raised on a farm where we produced cotton, corn and soybeans and ran a commercial herd of Hereford cattle. When my son Barry wanted to show a heifer as his FFA Project he chose a Charolais heifer from the Double RR Charolais farm of Mr. Cranston Webb of Newbern, TN. We were so impressed with the Charolais breed I decided to go from a 100 head of commercial cattle to a 100 head of Reg. Charolais in just a few short years. As a commercial producer I realize the amount of effort it takes to make a living in today’s world. I think I know what the commercial bull buyer has in mind and what he is wanting to improve his weaning weights as well as replacement heifers. It has been a great trip watching my son show for many years and now we have two Grandsons that love the show ring as well. We sell Bulls and replacement heifers on the farm as well custom beef . I have been involved on National, regional and local level. I currently serve on the Tennessee Charolais Assocation Board, and served on the AICA Commercial Committee. I want to help keep the Charolais breed as the choice of cattle for all types of producers and help the young breeders be more profitable for them to stay in the Charolais business for many years after their show career.
Bob Morton
I started a Charolais business with my sons because they were involved in showing. I am the father of 4 sons, and have 9 grandchildren. Been in the auction business for 25 years. I travel accross the country doing farm sales and have been doing Charolais sales for 20 years. I have continued to stay very involved in 4-H and FFA clubs in middle Tennessee. Big supporter of all types of sports. Have been in the Charolais business for 30 years. Been managing sales for the last 20 years. I am a big supporter of the Tennessee Charolais Juniors. I have been president and officer for several years with the Tennessee Charolais Association. I know there is going to be a lot of change in the Kansas City Headquarters. I believe that with new leadership in Kansas City, we need to do a better job of promoting our cattle accross the country.

I grew up on a dairy & tabacco farm in Greene County Tennessee where I still make my home. I own a business and run around 80 purebred Charolais and about 35 recips. I have been in the Charolais business since 1985. I serve as President of the Mountain Empire Charolais Association and a board member on the Tennessee Charolais Association. I have in the last two years helped supply show heifers for the local high FFA students. I want to help keep the Charolais position as the breed of choice. I would like to help improve the promotion of the breed as I feel our breed has been out promoted by other breeds due to marketing. We need to educate the young generation that there is a demand for our breed and a future.

PICK OF THE HERD
When Jim and I began discussing what female he wished to consign this year to the Royal Collection a lot of options were weighed, but we couldn’t choose just one! So Northwest Missouri State University has again opened their doors, without restriction, to the entire 100+ head cowherd. NWMSU’s guiding philosophy is that cattle need to be functional, low maintenance, performance directed, and they need to be eye appealing. With those principles in mind, they have built this set of females that are among the best in the nation! Currently the herd is sitting with 62% of the females in the top 25% for TSI and BW, 54% for Marb, 44% for YW, and 43% for WW. No matter what you are in search of, a foundation donor, bred heifer, or fancy open heifer, this distinguished cowherd has what you are looking for. On a stage like the Royal Collection everyone always wants to offer their very best and that is what Satterfield, Reinhart, and Bowen have done here! Take a moment and study this pedigree, LT Easy Pro by LT Ballet 6233. If it seems familiar, it’s because it should. 0024 is a full sib to LT Ballet 9219 Polled, the breathtaking dam of the $82,000 LT Sundance, $50,000 LT Venture, and $35,000 LT Commissioner. 9219 has easily been called one of the most attractive females at Lindskov-Thiel’s and it looks like 0024 is on track to follow in her sister’s footsteps. With a long spine, square hip, and an enviable amount of rib and capacity this female is the front pasture kind. She comes loaded genetically as well with an outstanding top 5% for Marb. Sells Bred AI 3-29-21 to CCC Reputable 8140, $47,000 high selling bull in the 2019 CCC Bull Sale and full sib to CCC WC Resource. Very few females can offer what this next lot brings to the table, phenotype accentuated by an outstanding EPD profile. Ricketts Charolais Ranch offers you a one-of-a-kind chance at perhaps the next great Donor female with this smooth made, stout boned, and cow powered Affinity daughter. 9254 will stop you in your tracks with her looks but get you going again with her genetic potential. She ranks in the top 20% for WW, YW, Milk, 15% for MTL, TSI, and top 3% for Marb for a total of 12 traits in the top 30% of the breed! There is consistency to be found here, too, evidenced by her dam’s first calf, RCR New Man in Town 8213, currently standing stud for Select Sires. Bred AI to LT Countdown 9712 Pld, $27,500 bull from the 2020 LT Ranch Sale and newest edition to the ST genetics lineup. Due to calve prior to sale day. Duchess 631 is quickly making a name for herself as a young donor that just flat out works as her progeny continue to top the Ridder Farms online open heifer sales and the annual production sale. Her calves share a stylish shape and look, stout features, and big middle. When describing this female Derek was quick to say, “She continues to impress us in her short time being in production and basically anything in a sale out of this donor has been well received.” 631 also had a productive show career herself garnering two Reserve National Division Championships. An Outsider daughter was Reserve Division at Charolais Junior National this summer and is going to be a force this fall as a pair! Selling right to flush with a guarantee of 6 embryos.

AICA Board of Director Nominees currently shows our registered Charolais at local and state fairs and Junior Nationals. On the national level my family has attended Charolais Junior Nationals for many years when my son was showing cattle and now as my grandson is showing cattle. My son Tyler was on the AIJCA Junior Board from 2007 to 2011. I have been involved with the Tennessee Charolais Association for many years, serving as a West TN Board member, Vice-President, President and currently serving a second term as Vice-President. On the local level I am working with the high school to enhance their breeding program for their registered herd thru selective AI breeding. If elected as Area 13 Director I would like to be more involved in the association and help to continue improvement in the Charolais breed. I would like to see the youth getting more involved in our association, they are our future. We have to keep our youth excited about the cattle industry. Tennessee ranks 12th in the nation in beef cow numbers and we need to continue to work on Charolais in the market place for seed stock and commercial breeders. Other breeds have excelled in their marketing strategies and we as the AICA need to continue to develop marketing strategies to increase our market share and profitability.

Charolais yearling bulls are consigned annually to a central bull test station and are frequently sale toppers at the Southwest Virginia Performance-Tested Bull Sale. In collaboration with the Virginia Charolais Association, VT has hosted every Fall Improvement Sale in Blacksburg, which now has totaled 17 sales. The ‘VPI’ prefix is nationally known in Charolais circles at all levels. Discipline within our breeding program’s standards reflects the seriousness taken in the utilization of DNA-typing, performance data, and carcass ultrasound. Under Dr. Eversole’s tutelage, VT is proud to have bred VPI Free Lunch 708T, a multi-trait breed leader in the National Sire Evaluation Program. This bull epitomizes several of our breeding goals in producing seedstock with economic value and later became a roster member for Select Sires in 2008 where he was used heavily in the AI industry on purebred and commercial females. In addition, LOF/VPI Abraham 48 is another featured AI sire for Bovine Elite, LLC and currently offers mating flexibility for many maternal lines today. Dr. Eversole has previously represented Area 15 on the AICA Board of Directors from 2005-10 and during that tenure served on the Breed Improvement, Rules and Ethics, and Intellectual Committees. He currently serves as the Vice President of the Virginia Charolais Association and is presently the Vice Chair of the AICA Breed Improvement Committee. AICA MEMBERSHIP Obituary
Obituary
The selfless, kind-hearted soul of Tim R. Butler, 41, of State Center, passed early Sunday morning, August 29, at the Story County Medical Center in Nevada.
Robert Lester Bain, age 61 of Sparta, TN passed away on Friday, September 10, 2021 at his home surrounded by his loved ones. Bobby Bain was born on January 20, 1960 in Sparta to the late LV and Faye Smith Bain. He was also preceded in death by his grandparents, Lester & Emmadel Bain and Robert
Born January 20, 1980 in Marshalltown, he was one of two children of Douglas “Doug” and Claudia (Paper) Butler. He graduated from West Marshall High School in 1998 and went on to attend school at Hawkeye Community College. Growing up on the family farm, hard work was something instilled in Tim from an early age. He worked for Edler Brothers, farmed with his dad and had a real knack for livestock, especially Hereford cattle. After meeting at the Marshall County Fair at age 16, he fell in love with Chris Ohrt. They were “high school sweethearts from different high schools” and spent their time together baling hay, attending cattle shows and watching “bad” movies. They were united in marriage on July 1, 2001 at the Marshalltown First United Church of Christ. Together they raised their two children in State Center, who were everything to Tim. He was very proud of his kids and enjoyed attending their sporting events and showing cattle together. Tim was a fearless member of the State Center Fire Department, serving in the position that his dad previously held. Not only did he help people every chance he got, he also saved many people both on and off duty. A man of integrity, Tim believed in doing the right thing without recognition and was passionate about his community. He was always thinking of others. Beyond being an amazing husband, father, farmer and fire fighter, Tim was known as many other things: a morning person, bargain shopper, constant teaser, avid Cyclones and Cardinals fan, believer of dessert first, hunter, fisher, tinkerer, memory-maker and encourager of all. He was involved in several organizations, including the board of the Iowa Charolais Association, member of the National Charolais Association, faithful member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association and the 4H and FFA Dad’s groups.
& Hazel Smith. Bobby graduated White County High School in 1978. Upon graduation, he started a 35 year career with UPS. Bobby was a member of Hickory Valley Baptist Church along with being a member of the Masonic Lodge. He loved the outdoors, especially hunting, golfing and farming. Also, he was a huge sports fan from White County Athletics to UT Football. Bobby loved his family and was always a supporter and encourager to them. He liked the simple things in life most, like practicing baseball/softball in the front yard with his children and sitting on the back porch (his “happy place”) enjoying nature. Bobby loved coaching several of his son’s baseball teams. He took pride in all his teams especially his 11-12 year old All Stars team who was Tennessee District 2 Champs in 2003. A special thanks to Dr. Rich and team in Atlanta for the amazing love, care and support given to him the past eight years. They helped to extend his life well beyond expectations. Also, to our church, family, and our friends for always supporting and praying for us. Survived by his wife of 37 years, Kathy Davis Bain, his children, their spouses, and grandchildren. Also, he was survived by his two sisters, a brother, several nieces, a nephew and great nieces and a great nephew.
Tim was blessed with a big family and enjoyed getting everyone together. His famous “U busy?” text was often followed up by a long-winded phone call to those closest to him. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 20 years, Chris; his two children: Cody and Baylee; grandson, Colt; his parents: Doug and Claudia Butler of State Center; sister, Micki Butler of State Center; “sister” Sarah Butler; “brother” Matt (Jenny) Butler; his grandma, Jan Paper and sistersin-law: Stacey (John) Handsaker and Tory (Randy) Lass. He is also survived by several other relatives, his brotherhood at the Fire Station and many friends and community members, whose lives he touched. In death, Tim rejoins his grandpa, Jim Paper; paternal grandparents and his aunt, Vicki Butler.

September 19, 2021 Dear AICA Membership, After more than two decades of service as Executive Vice President of the AICA, J. Neil Orth announced his retirement shortly before the Spring meeting of the AICA Board of Directors. A national search was started with a press release in several publications and we began receiving resumes soon thereafter. After reviewing the resumes, conducting interviews of the top candidates, and careful deliberation the search committee unanimously selected one candidate to recommend to the Board of Directors. On August 27, 2021 the full board approved the hiring of Dr. Clinton Rusk as the Executive Vice President of the AICA. Dr. Rusk will begin his employment on November 1. Neil’s retirement will begin the end of the year allowing a transition period. Dr. Rusk is the current Department Head of the Animal and Food Sciences at Oklahoma State University. I had never met Dr. Rusk until we held his interview. His resume is beyond impressive and his interview was just as impressive. But I believe what impressed me were the comments I received from people who know him. Willing to help everyone, first to arrive and the last to leave and his extraordinary work ethic were brought up in every recommendation. Honest, ethical and loyal were used to describe him. We believe Dr. Rusk is the right individual to lead our Association. Dr. Rusk will be at the November Board meetings in Louisville to meet the members. I want to congratulate Neil, Marilou Wegner and Lewis Meyer on their upcoming retirements. I wish them nothing but the best and thank them for their service to the AICA. Hope to see everyone in Louisville. Thanks, Eddy Loggains

CHAROLAIS JOURNAL
Simmental. During this time, though, Lloyd and Jane never strayed too far from Charolais as they could tell this was the breed for them because of the economic benefits commercial cattlemen would receive from this breed. In 1972, Lloyd became one of seven main producers who formed a new feedlot operation north of Choteau called North Montana Feeders, giving local producers a place to finish calves and a place for DeBruycker Charolais to feed thousands of their bull customers’ calves each year. He was manager of the 8,500 head feedlot from 1979 to 2003, and while he was active, between North Montana Feeders and the other feedlots the family used, they fed close to 30,000 head of cattle each year. Lloyd lived by the mantra of thinking big and acting decisively. In 1974, he and Jane took one of their bulls, Bamark, to the Denver Stock Show. They brought him up the elevator of the Hilton hotel for the event. The sale manager asked Lloyd, “What’s Bamark’s show record.” Lloyd (knowing the bull had never been shown before), said truthfully, “He’s undefeated.” That response got Bamark into the sale, and it turned out that Lloyd and Jane’s one-quarter interest of semen in that bull grossed more revenue at $50,000 than the rest of the entire sale. Through the 1970s into the 2000s, Lloyd focused on building DeBruycker Charolais into a world-respected registered cattle operation. Working with his wife and their children, he sold cattle to producers from Canada to Japan and from Mexico to South Korea. In 1983, he loaded a 747 jet with 441 head of Charolais-cross calves that were flown to Korea from Holman Aviation at the Great Falls International Airport. He was one of the founding members of the Herd Improvement Test at Stanford, focusing his efforts at selecting bulls with the best breeding traits. During this time, Lloyd developed a branded beef program called “Char-Pak,” whereby Charolais beef was packaged and sold using the Charolais name. Although no longer in operation, the program demonstrates Lloyd’s knack for promotion, innovative thinking and for driving initiatives which are now being harnessed for other agricultural products and breeds. On April 1, 1985, Lloyd oversaw the first DeBruycker Charolais bull sale, selling 224 head of registered bulls at the ranch of his daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Joe Campbell, north of Choteau. Today the annual auction sells 700 bulls and another 300 bulls are sold via private treaty. DeBruycker
Charolais bulls can be found throughout the world. Lloyd was one of the first, if not the first, to develop a lease bull program. The initiative enabled people to use Charolais bulls in an affordable manner which, in turn, created many new customers for the Charolais breed. Under Lloyd and Jane’s leadership, DeBruycker Charolais has raised some of the finest Charolais bulls in the breed: Ali Mark, Mr Perfect, Cigar, Trademark, Zen and Zeus are names which North American cattle producers know as solid breeding stock. In many gain and carcass contests and in “birth to plate” evaluations, DeBruycker Charolais animals have ranked at or near the top. Today, the DeBruycker Charolais operation, including the home place and the ranches of Lloyd’s children, encompasses 25,000 deeded acres, some 50,000 leased acres and raises 2,200 mother cows and 1,000 bulls a year, making the family conglomeration one of the largest registered Charolais herd in the world. Lloyd was known for being a great judge of cattle and horses. He said he had “the shepherd’s eye” for evaluating livestock conformity, and he was a valued judge for many 4H and cattle shows. He was also a consummate farmer, who loved running the combine at harvest time. While Lloyd was a dedicated cattle breeder, he had many other interests during his long and full life. He and Jane traveled to every state in the union and visited Japan, Mexico, Canada, Europe and Taiwan. He was an avid gambler, who “was known to bet on anything, including the ‘R’ in Rolaids.” He loved playing poker, rolling the dice, betting on horses and hitting the craps tables in Las Vegas. One time, in a dice game, he won and was paid off in diamonds. He gave those diamonds away through the years so his wife, his daughters, his daughters-in-law and his granddaughters and the brides of grandsons each had diamonds to put in their wedding rings. He loved Thoroughbred horses and greatly enjoyed going to horse races and placing his wagers. This love led him to invest in several race horses in the U.S. and Canada. In 2005, Lloyd won a $1,000,000 race in Florida with a horse that went off at 70 to one odds. He also enjoyed bowling and was active in local leagues for many years.

He was an involved community supporter. He served on the Dutton School Board, the Teton County search and rescue, and on the boards of the Farmers Elevator and North Montana Feeders. He was a past member of the Montana Cattlemen’s Association, Montana Stock Growers Association, United States Cattlemen’s Association, R-CALF USA and the National Cattlemen’s Association. In 2014, when he was 80, the Montana Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association recognized Lloyd and Jane for having a ranch that has contributed to the Montana western lifestyle. At that time, Lloyd said of all their accomplishments, the proudest was that their sons and daughters still work together for the home ranch and the individual ranches that many of them now own and operate. “I would say that [our most significant accomplishment] is that my kids have followed what we started,” Lloyd said. “We all work together and that makes me feel awfully good.” He was known for his generosity and was always willing to help out friends and neighbors who had fallen upon tough times and to help new farmers and ranchers just getting started. He supported many causes including rodeo, Dutton High School and 4-H. When he and Jane were raising their kids, Lloyd worked with them on ranch every day, sandwiching their school and sports events in among haying, harvesting, calving and shipping. He taught them to think big, to work hard, to never quit, not to fear failure and to set their sights high. In his later years, he greatly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, attending their school and sporting events and helping them learn the ropes of ranching and farming. Like most farmers and ranchers, he loved dogs too. He had many over the years, including Charlie Brown, a terrier; Buford, a St. Bernard, and even once a Dalmatian. He kept the ranch populated with llamas, goats, bum lambs and pigs too. Music was also one of Lloyd’s interests. His family says he had a “great country music voice” and was always singing along with the radio or a cappella as he drove down the road in one of his red pickups. Later in his life, Lloyd wrote and played his own songs, recording seven CDs of original and cover works. His granddaughter, Cassidy DeBruycker, sings with him on one of the CDs. While he wasn’t into school learning, Lloyd had a flair for numbers and was known for his ability to do complex mathematical calculations in his head. He never stopped learning his entire life as he was constantly looking at trends and exploring new ventures. He was interested in ethanol and biofuels in the 1970s and worked on farm-to-restaurant marketing of DeBruycker Charolais beef in the 1980s. While he didn’t have a college education, he encouraged his children and grandchildren to pursue their goals in higher education. Lloyd lived most of his life on the farm with Jane and never really retired. As his health began a gradual decline, he stayed on the farm for as long as he could. About two years ago, however, his need for care increased to the point that he moved into long-term care at Benefis Teton Medical Center. 56

His family is very grateful for the terrific care he received at BTMC. Lloyd was a larger-than-life person. His love for life and his passion for always moving forward have been passed on for generations, and for that his family is eternally grateful. Lloyd is survived by his wife, Jane of Dutton; his children, Tammy (Chris) Wend of Sparwood, British Columbia, Mark (Belva) DeBruycker of Bynum, Cathy (Joe) Campbell of Choteau, Jacque Jacobsen of Fairfield, Kelly (Bruce) Martin of Conrad, Brett (Kay) DeBruycker of Dutton and Jody Dahl of Roundup; his brothers, Roger (Myrl) DeBruycker of Floweree and Rudy DeBruycker of Nebraska; 25 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Raymond DeBruycker, and his sister-in-law Janet DeBruycker; an infant son, Stephen Lloyd DeBruycker; his grandson, Jeffrey Wend; and his sister-in-law, Rosemary DeBruycker. The celebration of life was held on Tuesday, Sept. 21, at 11 a.m. outside on the lawn at the Dutton American Legion Hall with burial in the Dutton Cemetery. A fellowship gathering on the Legion Hall lawn was held after the burial. The family asked those attending to adhere to COVID-19 safety guidelines.
