Headquarters
M. Blake Nelson, Executive Vice President Fall is upon us and with it comes many cattle sales, national shows and college football. The cooler weather is a welcome change for both us and our livestock. I love this time of year, seeing the fresh prospects, new genetics, as well as those tried and true matings that work time and time again; they all make fall an exciting time. I often find myself in a familiar place when I am looking through different sets of cattle, I find a heifer or bull I like and then I want to know the sire and dam information. Which leads me to my direction for this article “Why is there value in registering cattle and tracking pedigrees?” Cattle pedigrees are of value to all phases of the industry. It doesn’t matter if you are breeding, calving, feeding or harvesting them, genetics matter. A registered or documented pedigree will provide knowledge that you otherwise wouldn’t have if it were just a commercial animal. This information can be very valuable in estimating not only the animal’s performance, but also their offspring’s performance. Your program can be directed towards OCTOBER 2018
6
goals of choosing animals that excel in certain traits that you are trying to improve on in your herd. Both visual and measurable traits can be predicted off of a known pedigree. A registration certificate can help provide a tremendous amount of information for not only the predicting of production, but also animal identification, permanent features (ex. color, horned/polled), lineage of the ancestors and both actual performance and EPDs. The breeder is vital in providing every piece of data that is used to produce the pedigrees and records and is why breeder integrity is an absolute must. The information submitted is extremely important because it will affect this animal and every subsequent ancestor. Fortunately, the majority of breeders adhere to character, integrity and providing truthful data; this is the true stockman’s way. There is a small faction that will test this principal. However, the current ability to validate parents and breed makeup through DNA testing is affordable and easily used by most associations. The weights that are submitted are very important for data recording and for the production of EPDs. Many may say that inflated weights or that an inaccurate measurement can make or break an animal’s number, but with the current technology used in the production of EPDs there are parameters to recognize this and adjust accordingly. An individual’s actual weights are very important in selection, but the EPDs will represent not only the subject animal’s performance but also that of many ancestors. This again brings us back to the need for breed registries and having a permanent recorded pedigree of an animal for use as a selection tool for the producers. According to the National Pedigreed Livestock Council (NPLC) the pedigreed livestock industry has traditionally attracted
independent and innovative thinking people of the highest integrity. Since most people enjoy associating with people of high character, the pedigreed livestock industry can be and generally is an enjoyable, satisfying business. In summary, a pedigree is an ancestral record of an individual animal. A pedigree has value because it is a recording of knowledge. That knowledge can be promoted into additional value because knowledge can contribute to the earning power of future progeny from an individual animal. The registered livestock business can be highly rewarding as you form and mold highly predictable genetic packages of breed-improving material into superior animals. Self-satisfaction comes through the accomplishment of producing genetically superior animals which you made possible through wise breeding decisions. To top it all off, there is the satisfaction of working through your association with people of integrity who has similar interests, ambitions and goals. Ultimately, it is our goal as Maine-Anjou breeders to produce a high quality, progressive, trustworthy product for our customers. Recorded pedigrees and historical data are a vital part in the building of our great cattle. As Maine-Anjou breeders your submission of accurate information is our life source and we greatly appreciate your diligence in doing your part for your herd and the breed. Thank you! Just a reminder when sorting your spring born calves please consider some of the AMAA sponsored options in marketing them: Maine Max Bull Test & Sale, and the Bright Lights Sale in Denver. If you have any interest or questions regarding these programs please contact myself or Josh. Best Regards, Blake MAINE-ANJOU Vision, Vigor, Value!

The current standard in the industry when it comes to EPDs is to push the parameters. And by push, I mean be as progressive as possible in not just one or a few EPD columns, but in all of them. Which poses the question, at what point do EPDs become more symbolic than something that really tells the truth about genetic prediction? When it comes to selection there is no question that EPDs should play a pivotal role in your decision making criteria. Phenotype is an expression of genotype, to put EPDs aside and to say that they don’t matter or that you don’t agree with some figures is a gross misunderstanding of the situation. What is interesting in the discussion of genetics is that too often we see a lack of understanding the EPDs and that how they are calculated is a constantly evolving process. As new tools become available, technology can help be a stronger more correct prediction of the genetic propensity of an animal’s merit… but, then, things evolve again. Sometimes we use genetic selection as an end all be all or on the other side of things we use phenotype as an end all be all. A balance of the two traits are needed. Establishing the genetic merit of an animal and ensuring it has a solid foundation for others that may use it are imperative to maintaining consistency. So the question arises, can
we make animals to fit every environment? Unfortunately not. The reason being we cannot predict how livestock, and more specifically the genetics, will react to the environment they are placed in. Make no mistake, all the growth in the world genetically isn’t of much use if the plane of nutrition for that individual isn’t up to the task of allowing the animal to reach its full genetic potential. It’s important to realize that each breed, breeder and seedstock producer can’t be everything to everyone. We know that the maternal capability of cattle is a result of heterosis. They can’t be out matched by any straight breeding of one specific breed, just like we know that if you need muscle and leanness you call on a breed like Maine-Anjou to answer that request. The things we do well must take an active role in promoting our breed and our association. We fix yield grade and we moderate cow size. With a request in having zero percent of carcasses over 1,000 pounds before the next beef quality audit, we are best suited to add muscle and increase efficiency. There is no doubt that premiums exist for quality grade, but those premiums are only substantial four months out of the year. Efficiency grade premiums are there 12 months out of the year and with them consistently making money – that is the difference in making an impact and not.

Par 5 Cattle Company
Commitment from the Ground Up
The Ringkob crew and PAR 5 Cattle Company are situated in a part of South Dakota that is as picturesque a cow country as they come, and the cattle found there equally match the view in quality. Rolling hills with trees atop them and plenty of grass to run cows, like most all of us dream about. Chuck Ringkob and his wife, Jennifer, have settled here with their three children. They have focused their efforts on building a Maine cowherd for the right reasons, and that commitment has certainly proven to be the right decision.
Their cowherd and influence of Maine-Anjou cattle started with humble beginnings, like most of us, with Chuck and his influence as a junior when he showed cattle in the 80s. Chuck and his family showed steers growing up and at that time Maine cattle were making the extra look that judges were after in the showring. His years of showing cattle and being involved in livestock judging led him to South Dakota State University (SDSU), where he was part of the livestock judging team in 1992. During his time at SDSU, he received his degree in animal science and
met his wife, Jennifer. Upon graduation, Chuck accepted a job with Kent Feeds that landed them in Minnesota and then moved them to Springfield, S.D. Which brings us to the time where their MaineAnjou business really started. Chuck and Jennifer have three children; Justin, Haley and Reagan. This is where the name Par 5 stems from. The births of their children brought about the beginning of a time where Chuck and Jennifer’s modeled work ethic and began instilling drive into their kids. Together, they have gotten their children involved, OCTOBER 2018

Show from another longtime Maine enthusiast and breeder, Donnie Begalka. He was a Bullseye son, and things started to really get serious. It should also be noted that Chuck and his crew hold a strong belief in the importance of supporting the Maine Event, promtional sire purchased by Phil Lautner, raised by Par V. Watertown area. He and his family and that has led to their strong now contribute to influence in the junior Mainethe Maine offering each year at the Anjou program – as well as a Watertown Winter Farm Show’s commitment to breeding cattle for consignment sale. the right reasons. Chuck calls it “dual purpose.” Where work in the showring, and more importantly in the commercial industry, is productive. Par 5 started to build their cowherd through the influence of cattle they were able to purchase and exhibit in the junior program. Chuck was sure to mention that when he bought cattle, he made sure to buy cow families. He believes that cow families and their maternal side make the strongest Chuck said, “We registered calves impact for their future success. As out of that high Maine bull; it their cowherd numbers started to was the jumpstart to the cowherd build, they started to incooperate that’s here now.” Chuck mentioned them alongside a commercial that he and his father-in-law, group of cows up in Lake City, who he ranches alongside, were S.D. This is where they bought so impressed with how the cattle a Maine bull named Battery. In performed that they slowly started 2004, he purchased another bull to incorporate more Maine bulls at the Watertown Winter Farm into the commercial battery. The

impact on pounds and performance were noticed and it only fueled the urge to be more progressive within the breed. Chuck reflected that by 2010 they were ready to start ranching fulltime. He and his wife, and the three kids moved to Lake City and took on the cattle industry. Cow numbers began to build to what is now around 120 registered cows. Par 5’s commitment to high Maine-Anjou cattle remains because Chuck says, “I see a niche and it allows me to be versatile in my breeding decisions.” Success has not gone unnoticed at the Par 5 ranch. They have been fortunate enough to exhibit the Reserve Champion Pen of Heifers in 2013 and the 2017 Champion Sale Heifer at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colo. That speaks volumes to Chuck’s commitment to the maternal side of his cowherd. Most recently Chuck sold a bull in the 2017 Bright Lights Bull Sale called Maine Event. He was purchased by Phil Lautner and that bull has certainly made an impact with progeny already being offered this fall by multiple operations. Chuck says they don’t keep many bulls intact, but when we do we make it count. That sentiment certainly reigns true. Every spring he offers a group of bulls for sale by private treaty that are most definitely worth the drive to Lake City. Chuck and Jennifer have made the focus of their operation to get their children involved in 4-H and other such junior programs. 4-H involvement came pretty easy for their family, since Jennifer works as a 4-H Youth Program Advisor in their area for SDSU Extension. Chuck made a point to tell me not to forget that his kids truly love the ability to participate in the bred and owned division at junior nationals. It has led to multiple
Justin Ringkob received this year’s $5,000 scholarship donated by the Herdsman Group. successes for them. “After all, that is what it’s truly about,” Chuck said. Most recently Justin was one announced as a recipient of the Herdsman Scholarship and Haley serves as the reigning American Maine-Anjou Queen. When asked the tough questions about the challenges Par 5 faces and how they are going to combat them, Chuck was quick to say that they are always in a fight to show the industry that Maine cattle have a place in the commercial market. He said, “If you don’t think they can do it, come up to Lake City.” The place where they

make the cows work every day for their own livelihood. The place where the Ringkob family faces the real issues every agriculturist sees through the U.S. Chuck said, “I am striving everyday to be a livestock breeder, not just a multiplier.” He sees the importance of outside genetics and knows that genetic diversity in his cow base, along with the use of a strong AI program and embryo transfer have given him the opportunity to raise outcross high Maine bulls. Bulls that he, along with others, can utilize to move forward in this business.
It’s apparent that Chuck, Jennifer and their family hold a commitment to Maine-Anjou cattle, but more importantly they have a stronger dedication to the beef industry. They work diligently to raise cattle that are marketable, and it’s obvious when you go through the Par V cow herd that their dedication is working. Working extremely well at that. Chuck feels high Maine-Anjou cattle work best commercially. He’s definitely a place to go get one if you’re interested.

(covers eight head). If rush work is faxed, it will be considered a rush unless otherwise specified. It is the breeder’s responsibility to give us a follow-up phone call to make sure the work is legible and to cover all fees. It is not our office staff ’s responsibility to call breeders that fax in registration work. No work will be released until payment is complete. Rush work is processed ahead of the regular work that is received in our office and mailed by regular mail within one to two business days. We will do our best to complete rush work that is received in our office by 2 p.m. (Monday – Friday). There is no same-day turnaround. If requiring a registration number only, it will still be considered a rush as we still have to process the work to obtain the number.
HELPFUL TIPS WHEN REGISTERING
To avoid delays in your registration work during our busy season follow the tips below. Double check that all blanks and information are correct and complete before mailing or submitting online. Things most commonly missed are: o Missing herd prefix and herd ID o Birthdates o Date of sale o Name of animal o Payment Make sure the person that is registering the animal owns the dam with the exception of ET calves. If an ET calf, make sure the donor dam has been DNA, PHA & TH tested and that we have the results on file. If you are checking on work please e-mail
us at robin@amaapc.com. When calling or e-mailing please have the name and breeder number of the person submitting the work. When registering annual active dams for performance only animals please submit them online if you have the capabilities. This will help the registrar processing tremendously. We appreciate you and your business and want to make sure that the registration process runs as smooth as possible. Thank you in advance for your extra time in making sure all work is correct, complete and received in a timely manner.
REGISTRATIONS FOR UPCOMING SHOWS
It is now time to register show animals for winter shows. Please keep in mind during the winter show season you will need to allow at least two to three weeks for turn-around on registrations and transfers sent in to our office. If a paper is needed within that time, a rush fee ($50 per eight head) will be required before the work will be completed.
BLOCK REGISTRATION DISCOUNTS It is the time to buy block of registrations for the 2018 year. Blocks can only be used on heifers and bulls under 13 months of age from January 1 to December 31 of each year. Blocks can save you as much as 30% in registration fees. All block fee must be paid before registering. Any unused registrations will expire at the end of the year.
BULL CALF REGISTRATION
ONLINE TRANSFERS
FOUNDATION ANIMALS
DNA, TH AND PHA REQUIREMENTS
If registering a bull calf born after Jan. 1, 2014, it must be TH/PHA free by parentage or have testing completed prior to registering and on file with the AMAA. Carriers will no longer be registered, but may be entered as a foundation animal. All progeny out of a Foundation carrier bull needs to be tested free of that defect prior to registration. If registrations are submitted before testing has been completed, the animal will not be registered. Instead, the animal will be given a performance number at a nonrefundable penalty charge of $10. Once the animal has been tested the registration may be completed at the regular rate. Please plan accordingly as testing can take up to three-four weeks.
Non-registered bulls and females must be entered as a foundation animal prior to MaineTainer progeny being registered. All current “P” (performance only) cattle will be grand-fathered into the program. If the sire is an AI sire and registered at another breed association, the pedigree and testing must be on file with the AMAA. The charge to add a sire pedigree will be a one-time charge of $40. If the AMAA finds that the pedigree has already been paid for by another breeder, the $40 charge will not be applied. Dams registered at another breed association may also be added for a one-time charge of $25. See the new self-billing sheet for foundation fees.
When transferring an animal on line make sure there is not a member number already created for the buyer. Creating more than one number for an individual creates registration problems later. If you find the buyer in the system at a different address please notify the buyer first to confirm the address and then notify the Maine office to update the account. It is always a good idea to always search for the buyer using the search tools before doing the work that way if they have a different address it is caught before entering the registration and transfer. When creating a new profile for a buyer please make sure to never give a junior a farm name. Please enter the junior’s name on the farm line and also as the contact.
Prior to registering any ET calves, all donor dams (including commercial or non-registered dams) must have DNA, TH and PHA on file in our office. Also, all AI sires are required to have the same on file. Therefore, our office will hold any ET registrations submitted out of dams without testing on file as well as all registrations out of AI sires that do not have complete testing on file. If the donor dam is deceased and not tested, we do require that the ET(s) have the tests done, in the absence of the donor’s records. The DNA, TH and PHA testing can be done at GeneSeek. A submission form is found on our Web site, maine-anjou.org.

It Starts With Good Data Reporting by Kelli Retallick, M.S. Director of Genetic Service, Angus Genetics, Inc.
“The idea of contemporary grouping is the underpinning of what we do in genetic evaluation. If we mess up the contemporary group, we mess it up for the entire group and the estimates of all the rest of the animals related to that contemporary group.” That quote was given by Dr. Bob Weaber of Kansas State University earlier this summer at the Beef Improvement Federation Conference in Loveland, Colo. Of course, the industry has come a long way from the first introduction of contemporary groups, now producers manage more tools than they can count. Although forgoing the simple acts of correctly collecting and reporting phenotypes (performance data) to the Association can lead to suspect predictions at best. The good news is that Association members as a whole do a great job of data reporting, but it is always good to re-visit the basics. Creating Contemporary Groups A contemporary group is defined as a group of cattle that are of the same breed composition and sex, are similar in age, and have been raised under the same management conditions. Other management codes can be placed on groups of calves who are truly managed differently at birth, weaning, yearling or ultrasound processing. For instance when splitting animals into correct weaning contemporary groups forage quality could help define these groups. If you are running two pastures that are 60 miles OCTOBER 2018
28
apart with forages of differing nutritional levels, grouping those sets of calves separately would be a good choice. However, if you split of group of cow/calf pairs for say breeding purposes and they are running on adjacent pastures with the same nutritional value those calves can more than likely be grouped together. If you have calves that have had extra care or feed (i.e. show/sale cattle), these animals should not be grouped with the larger cohort. Adjusting Weights Performance recording programs are set up with the realization a spread in age of the group will exist when calves are weaned and weighed, so in order to place every animal on an even playing field these weights are standardized. While it’s time to gear up for weaning collection, it is important producers collect weaning weights when the group average day of age is as close to 205 days as possible. The standard is to adjust weights up or down based on the age of dam and days of age of the calf. Even though, this standardization takes place producer need to do their best to take weights as close to 205 days of age as possible. Taking weights too early or too late negates the overall effectiveness of that standardization because of this some producers may experience larger than average adjustments up or down. This can hinder the effectiveness to predict true genetic merit of those individuals.
Report All the Data When collecting weaning weights, collect and report weights on the entire group, even if some calves will not be registered. Breeders may be tempted to economize by recording only the better performing calves within their herd. They may worry recording data on poorer performing calves will reflect unfavorably on their herd. Both of these conclusions are incorrect. Unless performance data is submitted on every calf born in a herd, subsequent genetic evaluations will be based on less information and consequently will be less accurate than would otherwise have been possible. Even worse, genetic evaluations may be biased. If only calves with good performance are reported, they may not get the credit they truly deserve. Conclusion The genetic evaluation that produces EPDs is only as good as the data behind it. In order to continue to make genetic progress good data reporting will remain paramount. When getting ready to collect data, remember these few tips. • Plan ahead – Collect data to fit the permitted contemporary group guidelines. • Break up contemporary groups properly – Cattle managed together are groups together. • Report data on the whole contemporary group
