Mares With More The Lazarus Mares by Larry Thornton
Back several years ago, I did an article on how to read pedigrees and use them as a selection tool. In this article I made reference to the fact that when you study the King Ranch Quarter Horse breeding program you will see that the emphasis on this program was through the sire side of the pedigree. Shortly after running this article in the Foundation Quarter Horse Registry magazine, I got a letter in the mail from Silverbrook Farms. The letter was handwritten from Helen Groves, the owner of Silverbook Farm. Helen is the daughter of Robert J. Kleberg Jr., grandson of Richard King founder of the King Ranch. Robert J. Kleberg Jr. is the man that spear headed the King Ranch breeding programs that developed the Santa Gertrudis breed of cattle, the King Ranch Thoroughbreds and the King Ranch Quarter Horses. Helen was writing the letter to give me the heads up about the criteria her father used to select mares for the ranch Quarter Horse broodmare bands and how important the mare really was to the breeding program. Here is what she had to say— 7/13/96 Dear Mr. Thornton, I read your nice article in the cow horse bulletin. As long as my father Robert J. Kleberg Jr. ran King Ranch, believe me, every attention was paid to mares selected for breeding. There were several basic criteria— a) All mares were judged on good conformation and soundness. b) All mares were worked in big open roundups, first between the herds and then in cutting, roping or both. c) They had to hold their condition—usually pasture fed only. But in dry times a ration of oats for each—Nosebags were used in the early days so only the ones that actually worked were supplemented. Any mare that got poor on the same ration as her mates would not be bred. d) Only mares showing good disposition, cow sense and physical ability were bred. In most cases the mares were by descendants of Old Sorrel bred to descendants of Old Page 16
Sorrel. At times mares showing racing ability or were good cow horses often would be bred and used to raise outcross horses—Some of the good foundation stock such as Solis were out of Mr. Sam Lazarus thoroughbreds. Tino was also bred that way. Some were “Spanish,” Standardbred or Morgan on the bottom side—not registered but showing type. I had a very nice mare some years back from King Ranch that was by a son of Wimpy and out of a daughter of Rey Del Rancho. She won races locally, fox hunted, cut and I roped off her. I have cutting horses now Peppy San Badger mostly. Sincerely Helen Groves This letter is one of my prized possessions. Just think - she took the time to respond to my article with a handwritten letter. I was honored to have her give me this information. The letter allows us to look back to see the significance of the mares on the King Ranch and a group of mares we know today as the Lazarus Mares. The Lazarus Mares will be our focus this month for our Mares With More. According to Bob Denhardt’s book “THE KING RANCH QUARTER HORSES”, the Lazarus Mares came to the King Ranch when a man named Sam Lazarus decided to get out of the racehorse business. Lazarus was a successful businessman and his business interests included the Quanah, Acme and Pacific Railway and the Acme Cement Company. He was a noted breeder of good Texas bred thoroughbred racehorses. When the State of Texas outlawed horse racing, Lazarus sent his horses to places like St. Louis, Missouri to compete. Despite his success in Texas, when Lazarus went out of state he found that his horses could not compete for a very interesting reason. This is how Denhardt tells of what happened, “When racing was outlawed in Texas, however, he had difficulty making his stable pay because of the high cost of shipping the horses and maintaining them at the eastern and southern tracks. something happened that made him decide to give up racing entirely. A string of his horses that were sent to St. Louis always seemed to break last and maintain their positions. There were unsavory explanations for the poor showing of horses that should have placed in some of the races. He did not like to lose money, and to have it lifted from his pocket was more than he could stand. The situation was especially galling to him because there seemed to be nothing he could do about it. He decided to sell out, racehorse, broodmares, stallions and all.” Lazarus wanted to find a place for his horses and he felt the King Ranch was a deserving place. So he approached the King Ranch about buying his horses. After some persistence on the part of Lazarus, Caesar Kleberg, Bob Kleberg Jr.’s cousin, was sent to inspect the mares. Upon inspection, Caesar Kleberg bought the Lazarus horses. The selling price was $100.00 apiece, with the stipulation that the Lazarus horses were not to be registered or raced, as he didn’t want them raced or used by his “former friends” in the racehorse business. Denhardt’s footnotes on page 96 and 97 of THE KING RANCH QUARTER HORSE indicates that there were 30 mares and two stallions sold. Lazarus also asked that the pedigrees of these horses remain anonymous and not to be used or made public. The footnotes by Denhardt indicate that the Lazarus mares came to the King Ranch in 1911 or 1912. Much of the information in the Denhardt footnotes came in a letter written by Dr. J. K. Northway the King Ranch veterinarian that came to the King Ranch in 1916. He told Denhardt that the two stallions listed above were suffering from moon blindness and that they put them down shortly after his arrival.

So this well-bred herd of registered thoroughbreds became known as the Lazarus horses and mares. With the pedigrees of the Lazarus horses basically unknown, Denhardt described them this way to tell about their quality, “Lazarus had accumulated one of the better bands of Thoroughbreds outside Kentucky.” This observation takes us to Martin’s Best, a Thoroughbred stallion that played a key role in the Lazarus mares’ contribution and a stallion that was actually a product of the Lazarus breeding program. We will rely on a ranch memo from Robert Kleberg Jr. to his nephew Dick Kleberg to tell us about Martin’s Best. This memo is now found in Denhardt’s book THE KING RANCH QUARTER HORSE, “Martin’s Best was a very, very high class thoroughbred that we raised from some of the Sam Lazarus mares. His (Martin’s Best’s) whole pedigree is filled with some of the best blood in the world and I thought it would be well to have this preserved with our permanent Quarter Horse records, as the blood of this horse was very important to the foundation of our stud. For instance, the mare Charrita that Lauro (Lauro Cavazos, the ranch foreman) rode and Solis were out of inbred daughters of this horse.” Solis was born in 1923 in the second crop of foals sired by Old Sorrel. He was foaled in the same crop as Cardinal. They were both proven on the ranch as stock horses and then put into the breeding program. They were both out of Lazarus bred mares. More on these stallions later. Denhardt then refers in his footnotes to his correspondence with Dr. Northway. Northway reaffirms Martin’s Best as a well-bred horse, but states his conformation was also important in his contribution to the program. When using thoroughbred blood, the King Ranch held tight to using horses that carried the right conformation to cross on the quarter horse. Martin’s Best was born in 1909 and sired by Right Royal. You will recall that the ranch purchased the Lazarus horses in 1911 or 1912. Thus by reviewing this stallion we can get a picture of bloodlines used by Lazarus in his breeding program. Right Royal was sired by an imported horse and out of an imported mare. Right Royal was a grandson of such great Thoroughbreds as Bend Or and St. Simon. His sire was *Rapello by Bend Or and *Rapello’s dam was Napoli by Macaroni. *Mrs. Delaney was the dam of Right Royal. Her sire was St. Simon. The dam of *Mrs. Delaney was Ismay by Isonomy. The dam of Ismay was Ste. Alvere by Hermit. (An (*) in front of a horses name indicates an imported horse in a pedigree today.) Victoria Short in her book THE UNREGISTERED FOUNDATION SIRES OF THE AMERICAN QUARTER HORSE shows in her pedigree of Solis, one of the stallions she profiles, that Right Royal was a successful racehorse. She reported that he ran 69 races with 20 wins, 17 seconds and 10 thirds. He was a stakes winner as well. The dam of Martin’s Best was Grief. Grief was also a well-bred mare sired by Faustus. Faustus was the sire of such noted horses as Bonnie Joe, the grandsire of Joe Reed P-3. Faustus was a full brother to Mannie Gray, the dam of the great Domino. What makes Grief so interesting is that if you check equineonline.com computer records it shows that she was the dam of only one registered foal and that was Martin’s Best. This would allow us to assume that if she was the dam of other foals, they were absorbed into the Lazarus herd as it was used on the King Ranch. Continued on page 24..

Denhardt talks about Martin’s Best on page 128 of his chapter on outcross thoroughbred stallions used on the King Ranch. Here is what he wrote, “… One of the Lazarus mares had a colt by Right Royal (TB), who was named Martin’s Best. He was trained as a cow horse by Bob Kleberg. Later, when Martin’s Best fillies were introduced into the program, they proved his blood to be one of the most important among the Thoroughbreds used.”
162 cutting points and 20 halter points. Flynt retired Marion’s Girl in 1957 to be bred to King P-234. But Marion’s Girl died in December of 1957, never having produced a colt.
Helen’s letter indicates that one of the most successful sons of Old Sorrel was Solis. Solis is mentioned again when Bob Kleberg is writing to Dick Kleberg about the influence of Martin’s Best on the success of Old Sorrel. Solis was out of a Lazarus bred mare.
Bill Cody was a successful sire with Blair Cody, Cody Bee, Cody’s Pet, Joe Cody, Cash Cody, Lee Cody, Strole’s Cat, Sue Cody, Bill Royal, Town Crier and Winifred Cody all being AQHA Champions. Joe Cody was not only an AQHA Champion but an all time leading sire in the reining horse industry. He is in the NRHA Hall of Fame.
Officially the AQHA lists the dam of Solis as the Mother of Solis with an unknown pedigree, instead of just a Lazarus Mare. This distinguishes her from other Lazarus Mares. The AQHA officially list her sire as Right Royal. The ranch pedigrees I received from them in the 1980’s indicate that Right Royal was her sire. But Denhardt and the footnotes indicate that she was sired by Martin’s Best and out of a daughter of Martin’s Best. Hazel Oatman Bowman in an article “King Ranch Horses” that appeared in the September 1947 issue of the CATTLEMAN magazine indicates that Solis was an outstanding individual. Bowman described Solis this way, “The most outstanding cross of the first cross was a beautiful sorrel colt named Solis, which was selected for use as a sire.” Stephen J. “Tio” Kleberg, son of Dick Kleberg, Jr., told me in a 1989 interview that he believed “Solis was the best producing son of Old Sorrel.” He also feels that “Solis had the most impact” on the program through both his colts and fillies. Kleberg goes on to point out that Solis sired four sons used on the ranch. But the two most important sons in the breeding program were Wimpy P-1 and Ranchero. Wimpy was selected to represent the King Ranch at the 1941 Fort Worth Stock Show. It was during this show that Wimpy earned immortality by winning the Grand Championship. The AQHA reserved the number one in the Stud Book for the stallion that was the Grand Champion at Fort Worth in 1941. Wimpy went on to become an influential sire. He counts among his foals Silver Wimpy, Bill Cody, Wimpy II and Showdown. Silver Wimpy was bred on the King Ranch and used extensively by the Scharbauer Ranch in Midland, Texas. He sired several noted show horses including Marion’s Girl, who was owned by Marion Flynt and shown by Buster Welch. Marion’s Girl won the NCHA World Championships in 1954 and 1956. She earned $36,075 from 1953 to 1957 and was inducted into the NCHA Hall of Fame. Marion’s Girl was an AQHA Champion with Page 24
Bill Cody was the first AQHA Honor Roll Halter Horse in 1952. This great show stallion earned 97 halter points during his career as a halter horse. He was also a noted reining and roping horse.
Bill Cody was out of Pesetita by Old Sorrel. The dam of Pesetita was Peseta by Cardinal by Old Sorrel. Cardinal was sired by Old Sorrel and out of Piocha by Right Royal. Piocha was a Lazarus mare. Wimpy II became a primary stallion for John Dawson of Oklahoma. This good son of Wimpy became a leading sire with 8 AQHA Champions and 21 ROM performers in the early years of the AQHA. His AQHA Champions include Bob’s Pick, Dawson Jack, Dawson’s Dixie Lee, Dawson Mark, Dawson’s Herb McSpadden, Dawson’s Surprise, Peaka Power, Wimpess Lady and Wise Wimpy. Showdown was another good siring son of Wimpy. His AQHA Champions include Caliente Hill, Excuse, Show Tip, Showdown Rick, Showpond and Showdown Wimpy. Pandarita Hill by Showdown was the 1959 AQHA Honor Roll Halter Horse and Show Tip was the 1969 AQHA Honor Roll Western Riding Horse. The dam of Showdown was Cacuchia by Peppy P-212 and she was out of Cuate I. Cuate I was by Solis. More on this later. Ranchero is the founder of the second King Ranch sire line to travel through Solis to Old Sorrel. Ranchero isn’t as well known as Wimpy, but his contribution to the influence of Solis is an important part of the story and his strongest branch was through his son Rey Del Rancho. Dick Kleberg, Jr., father to Stephen “Tio” Kleberg, was very fond of Rey Del Rancho. As Tio Kleberg put it, “My father loved Rey Del Rancho.” Dick Kleberg, Jr. was in charge of selecting breeding stock for the King Ranch breeding program and he found the Rey Del Rancho horses to be consistently among the best. Tio Kleberg described Rey Del Rancho as a horse with “a small but petite head that stood about 14.3 hands.” He was “well balanced but a little light behind” and “a very quick horse”.

Legendary cutting horse trainer, Buster Welch labeled the Rey Del Rancho line to be the “best” King Ranch family for cutting. Welch based his opinion on horses like Rey Jay and Callan’s Man, both wellknown cutting horses. The record shows that this line was noted for good looking horses, good ranch using horses as well as good cutting horses. We will look at the Rey Del Rancho contribution through individuals like Anita Chica, El Rey Rojo and Rey Jay. Anita Chica was the last of a long line of halter horses bred and shown by the King Ranch. This mare is credited with 1 Champion of Champions title, 41 Grand Championships, 15 Reserve Grand Championships and 60 blue ribbons. She earned 90 halter points and the Superior Halter Award. El Rey Rojo was sired by Rey Del Rancho. This stallion has been used extensively by the King Ranch. His foals include El Bandido Rojo, an AQHA Champion with 37 halter points and 14 performance points.
Solis sired 90 daughters that were used in the King Ranch breeding program. This means that they became an integral part of the breeding program. One of the outstanding crosses for the daughters of Solis was when they were bred to Peppy P-212. Here are some examples. Showdown was sired by Wimpy. His dam was Cacuchia by Peppy. The dam of Cacuchia was Cuate I by Solis. Peppy Jr was a stallion used by the ranch in the 1950s. His sire was Peppy and his dam was Gabriela II by Solis. Tio Kleberg credited Peppy Jr as one of three stallions to make a major contribution to the King Ranch breeding program in the 1950s. The other two stallions were Rey Del Rancho and Wimpy.

How Does Your Hay Stack up? Evaluating hay quality & fiber in the equine diet Because hay is such a common part of a horse’s diet, judging quality on visual inspection is important, as lab analysis is not always easily available. Here are (3) simple things to look for to help you get started selecting the best hay for your horses and your money. 1. The initial check that most people are familiar with is color and smell. Horse hay should be bright green and smell slightly sweet. Brown hay typically indicates either a problem in the baling process, such as being rained on, or age. Acrid or musty smells generally indicate the presence of mold. 2. Another sign of good horse hay is the leaf:stem ratio. The more leaves, the better, since the leaves are where most of the nutrition in the hay is stored. Hay that has too many hard, woody stems is difficult to digest. Even if it is cheaper, most horses will pick through and leave the bulk of the stems behind, costing more in the long run. High quality hay is fine-stemmed, pliable, and full of leaves. 3. Type of hay is another factor. Grass hays, such as timothy or orchard grass, generally provide sound basic nutrition. The higher the concentration of legumes, such as alfalfa or clover, the higher the energy and protein content. High quality alfalfa is generally higher energy and protein compared to high quality grass hay, but good quality grass hay may be a better choice than mediocre quality alfalfa hay. These (3) simple tips are a great place to start when evaluating your hay but remember that factors such as soil, fertilization, plant maturity and storage will all impact the quality of your hay. So let’s talk fiber- the first and foremost source of fiber in a horse’s diet is their roughage, or hay. Secondary to that, is what is present in any supplemental grain sources. So let’s define what fiber is: ! !
Fiber is a measure of the plant cell wall, or the structural portions that give the plant support. Main components of fiber are the digestible cellulose and hemicellulose, and the indigestible lignin. -As a crop of hay matures, the lignin content increases and the cellulose and hemicellulose decrease.
Here’s what happens as a horse consumes roughage: ! Some quick digestion occurs in the stomach and small intestine, allowing starches and sugars to get digested as the forages pass through. ! The fiber begins to get digested as the feed passes into the hindgut, or the cecum and colon.
Seeking lower NSC in your hay?? Non-Structural Carbohydrates (NSC) Properly fertilized--Slow growth due to nutrient deficiency can cause high NSC; fertilized stands should have grown quickly and avoided this problem. Also, thick stands shade lower leaves from the sun, thereby reducing their ability to make sugar. Cut after a period of cloudy weather--Plants synthesize sugars during sunny weather, and periods of cloudy weather will result in reduced NSC. Rain after cutting may be a plus if humidity is low and hay dries without mold. Some carbohydrates might dissolve in water and leach out of the hay. Mixed with legume--If your horse has not previously shown sensitivity to alfalfa, grass mixed with a little alfalfa may be low in NSC as the alfalfa provides needed nitrogen (fertilization) and shades the grass. Be careful; some laminitic horses seem to react to some unknown triggers in alfalfa and clover. Already tested for NSC--Let your hay grower know that this information is valuable to you so you can choose hay that is appropriate for individual classes of animals. With proper testing, he may be able to sell his high-sugar hay at a higher price for dairy cattle or performance horses. He may be able to sell his rained-on, but not moldy hay for a better price if tests low in NSC and therefore is more suitable for easy keepers and metabolically challenged horses. Let him know that horse owners are requiring appropriate testing, just like his dairy clients do. Hay is likely to be higher in NSC if: -It was cut after drought or cold nights, especially when cured under cloudless skies. -It comes from thin, sparse stands of grass that have more sunshine on every leaf. -It was grown under growth-limiting levels of nitrogen, phosphorus or potassium (inadequate fertilization). -It is made from cereal grains such as oat, wheat, rye or barley that tend to be higher in NSC, even if the grain is not developed yet. The stems collect sugar in preparation for seed development.

Here is what Robert Kleberg, Jr. and A. O. Rhoad had to say in THE JOURNAL OF HEREDITY article “The Development of a Superior Family in the Quarter Horse” about the second generation crosses through Old Sorrel’s sons Little Richard and Cardinal. “As soon as it was possible to do so, selections were made from the related offspring above mentioned. In all cases the plan was to employ only such matings as would complement each other as to disposition, conformation and the great variety of characteristics which make up any living creature. An example of this type of mating would be the breeding of the stallion Little Richard to daughters of Cardinal; both Little Richard and Cardinal were almost of identical conformation and were practically perfect individuals. Little Richard, however, was above average in size for the breed; he was inclined to be sluggish and did not have as light a mouth as is desirable. Cardinal on the other hand was below average size, was inclined to be high-strung and his mouth was almost to light. From this mating we secured a closer approach to the desirable traits that Old Sorrel possessed.” They went on to explain that this cross-worked in the reverse as well and that this was the plan as it was carried out throughout the whole program. This is how they were constantly trying to improve on the horses they were using. The key individual in this breeding pattern was Peppy and he became the poster child for this breeding pattern and the King Ranch breeding program. He was foaled in 1934. He became the first noted show horse for the King Ranch. He was named the Grand Champion at Fort Worth in 1940, the year before Wimpy was the champion. His last show was at Tuscon in 1941 where he was named the Champion. He was also used as a match racehorse where he reportedly ran the quarter in 22.2 seconds. He was like all the horses on the King Ranch in that he was used as a cow horse where he was used on roundups, as a cutting horse and as a roping horse. As you can see his power as a sire comes through his daughters. It is easy to see that the Lazarus bred horses were a big part of the success of the King Ranch line of quarter horse. So now that have learned a little more about them we can now say see how important the broodmares were to the success of the program. Thank you, Helen Groves. by Larry Thornton Every year the American Quarter Horse Association teams up with the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association to name the Pro Rodeo Horses of the Year. This title is like awarding a World Championship to the hard working horses of the rodeo arena. They are the best of the best for that year. The 2010 winners are Eightys Sport (Sweetness) in Tie Down Roping; Ra Sonoita Silver (Vegas) in Heading; Fine Snip Of Doc (Cave Man) in Heeling; Dashs Dapper Star (Wick) in Steer Wrestling; Judge Buy Cash (Jethro) in Barrel Racing and Skips Harlan Tyree (Pops) in Steer Roping. These horses have earned their title by hard work and money won in the arena. Some say that the rodeo arena is the ultimate test for a performance horse. I always find it interesting to survey the pedigrees of these hard working horses to see where their speed and working ability comes from.
Patterson of Pratt, Kansas. Patterson was the 2009 and 2010 PRCA World Champion Steer Roper. Skips Harlan Tyree (Pops) helped Patterson set an earnings record of $101,685 as the first steer roper to earn over $100,000 in a year. When we look at Pops’ pedigree we see two very interesting pedigree patterns. The topside of his pedigree is dominated by the blood of Hank Wiescamp’s great breeding program. Wiescamp built his program on the blood of Old Fred and a Quarter Horse by the name of Plaudit. They were a big part of his plan to breed good Quarter Horses. Old Fred was the famous foundation sire that was used by the equally famous Colorado breeder, Coke Roberds. Old Fred was sired by Black Ball by Missouri Rondo by Missouri Mike by Printer II by Old Cold Deck. The dam of Black Ball was Nan, who was sired by a Standardbred stallion and out of a Standardbred mare.

Wiescamp bought them in lots of six retaining some and selling the rest to pay for all of them. The Thoroughbred Plaudit was sired by Himyar, who was the sire of Domino, another influential sire of Quarter Horses. The Old Fred blood in the Quarter Horse Plaudit came from his dam Colorado Queen. The infusion of Peter McCue came about when Roberds’ neighbor and friend, Si Dawson, bought the stallion and brought him to Colorado. When Dawson left to work as a ranch manager in South America, he left Peter McCue with Coke Roberds.
Skipper W was sired by Nick Shoemaker, a stallion that Wiescamp bought and made his senior sire. When Nick Shoemaker died unexpectedly, he used his son Skipper W. Nick Shoemaker was sired by Nick by Shiek P-11. Shiek was sired by Peter McCue and out of Pet by Old Fred. The dam of Nick was Sylvia by Bob H by Old Fred. Peter McCue was bred to daughters of Old Fred producing horses like Shiek P-11. The P-11 means that Shiek was one of the Studbook foundation sires that were given numbers 2 through 19 in Volume One of the AQHAssociation Studbook. Hank Wiescamp’s goal was to build a line of horses by linebreeding back to Old Fred. Continued from page 39... Wiescamp, who was out of Slippers by Jiggs by Fred Litze by Old Fred. The dam of Skipper W was Hired Girl, who was out of Leche by Nick. Thus Skipper W was 2 X 3 inbred to Nick. Hank Wiescamp professed that two of the best horses he bred, if not the best were Skipper’s King and his full sister Skipperette. They were sired by Skipper W and out of Santa Maria by Plaudit. When Santa Maria was bred to Skipper W she produced not only these two horses but the AQHA Champion Skipper’s Prince. He was Superior in halter as well. Some of the other notables from the Skipper W nick on Plaudit mares were Skip Hi, who was stakes placed in the Nebraska Derby and an ROM runner on the track; Skipado, with 44 halter points; Skipper’s Lad, with 23 halter points and Skip Me, with 13 halter points and 12 performance points. Skipper’s Lad and Skipadoo were out of Miss Helen. Skip Hi was out of Cimarroncita and Skip Me was out of Colorado Queen II. All three of these mares were daughters of Plaudit. The sire of Skips Harlan Tyree was Drifta Bar by Tender Chance. The sire of Tender Chance was Skips Bartender by Skipper’s King. The dam of Tender Chance was Skips Socialist by Skipper’s King. This makes Tender Chance inbred to Skipper’s King. The dam of Skip’s Bartender was Skipper’s Bustle by Skipper W. This gives Tender Chance a 3 X 3 X 3 breeding pattern to Skipper W.

An added note here: If we were to go beyond four or five generations for Drifta Bar, we would find some more of this breeding pattern to the Old Fred blood used by Wiescamp. The bottom side of the pedigree of Skips Harlan Tyree allows us to focus on another program that was built around the J. O Hankins’ great nick of King P-234 and Queen H. Hankins was the brother of Jess and Lowell Hankins. Jess was the owner of King P-234. The pedigree of Hank H is an example of a great nick that is built on blood affinities. The sire of Hank H was King P-234. King P-234 was sired by Zantanon by Little Joe. Little Joe was sired by Traveler and he was out of Jenny. Jenny was sired by Sykes Rondo. Sykes Rondo was sired by McCoy Billy by Old Billy. The dam of Jenny was May Mangum by Anthony. Anthony was a full brother to John Crowder, the broodmare sire of Old Fred. Anthony and John Crowder were sired by Old Billy and out of Paisana.
The dam of Tender Choice was Skip’s Socialite, out of Social Lady by Nick W. Nick W was a son of Nick Shoemaker making him a paternal half brother to Skipper W. The dam of Nick W was Cimarroncita by Plaudit. This makes Nick W a 3/4 brother to Skip Hi listed above. Drifta Bar is out of Spanish Sheila, who was out of Spanish Drift by Domino Nick. Domino Nick is sired by Nick W and out of HJ Skipalong by Skipper W. HJ Skipalong was out of Brushalong, a granddaughter of Plaudit. The Skipper W/Nick W cross was not without its own good performers. They include Skip’s Dilly, AQHA Champion, Superior Western Pleasure Horse and the 1966 AQHA High Point Western Pleasure Mare. Skipette was another AQHA Champion from this cross, as well as an AQHA Superior Halter horse and the 1964 AQHA High Point Roping Mare. Both of these mares were sired by Skipper W and out of a Nick W mare. The pedigree of Drifta Bar gives us a close up view of linebreeding to the Wiescamp bred horses; a breeding program that thrived on the Nick Shoemaker/Skipper W Nick on Plaudit mares—which was not only linebreeding to Old Fred but carried a Page 42

He was sired by Little Rondo by Lock’s Rondo. The dam of Yellow Jacket was Barbee Dun by Lock’s Rondo. Lock’s Rondo was sired by Whalebone, who was another full brother to John Crowder and Anthony being sired by Old Billy and out of Paisana. The dam of Tom Driver was Mammouth by Shiloh. (You will recall Old Billy’s pedigree was the reverse as he was by Shiloh and out of Ram Cat by Steel Dust.) The dam of Shelby was Mittie Stephens, the dam of Lock’s Rondo. She was sired by Shiloh Jr by Shiloh. She was out of Nelly Gray by Dan Secres. This gives King P-234 and Queen H a blood affinity through the mare Mittie Stephens as well as the blood of Shiloh and Steel Dust.
AQHA Champion and proven sire with foals like Dun Commander. Squaw H was a successful race mare that formed her own special line descending from King P-234 and Queen H. She was the dam of Squaw King, who sired Squaw Leo. Squaw Leo was the sire of Be Aech Enterprise, an NRHA Hall of Fame stallion. Squaw H is the tail female descendant of the 2010 American Quarter Racing World Champion Apollitical Jess. Booger H was an AA racehorse that has carried the King P-234/Queen H banner. He is the sire of horses like Radel King, who is the sire of Karlye King, the dam of Amarilla Chex. Amarilla Chex is the dam of NRHA million dollar sire Nu Chex To Cash. Hank H was purchased by Tom Smith and his sons Jack and Paul from J. O. Hankins. Hank H was put in race training and proved to be a solid AA racehorse running in the company of such noted horses as Senor Bill. Senor Bill was sired by Chicaro Bill and out of the great mare Do Good.

In between the top and bottom of Old Joe Bailey’s pedigree you will find several infusions of Steel Dust and Shiloh. But the most interesting infusion of this blood comes from his dam Susie McWhorter’s dam Aury. Aury is sired by Old Dutchman by Lock’s Rondo. Lock’s Rondo was sired by Whalebone and out of Mittie Stephens. When King P-234 and Queen H came together they formed one of the great branches of the King P-234 bloodline. The first foal produced from this cross was Duchess H. This mare was the dam of Bay Reba, who was sired by Leo. Bay Reba was the dam of Commander King. Commander King was an Page 46

His halter horses include Hank’s Sue, the 1957 AQHA High Point Halter Mare. Harlan, a son of Hank H that was unshown but a proven sire, represents the performance part of the Hank H family here. She was bred to Hank H and produced her last foal and that was Harlan. When we see the pedigree of Dixie Beach we see how it ties into Hank H giving this cross a blood affinity. The sire of Dixie Beach was Beetch’s Yellow Jacket by Yellow Wolf by Old Joe Bailey. Old Joe Bailey was the sire of Dan, who was the broodmare sire of Queen H. Beetch’s Yellow Jacket was out of a mare by Yellow Jacket, who shows up in the pedigree of Strait Horse the sire of Jabalina, the dam of King P-234 giving us another blood affinity between Hank H and Dixie Beach. The Smith Brothers sold Harlan to Bob Robey and he went on to be a successful sire. His foals include Jim Harlan, the 1962 AQHA High Point Halter Stallion and Harlan’s Tyree, an AQHA Champion. The dam of Skips Harlan Tyree was Two Times Harlan and she was just that. Her sire was Edmond Star by Harlan.The dam of Two Times Harlan was Two Eyed Tyrita by Two Eyed Jack. Her dam was Tyra by Harlan’s Tyree by Harlan. Harlan’s Tyree was out of Sandsarita. A leading performer from the Pitzer Ranch that shows the Two Eyed Jack/Harlan’s Tyree cross is Two Eyed Red Buck. Two Eyed Red Buck is a multiple AQHA World Show qualifier and AQHA Champion with Superiors in Heading and Heeling. His dam is Ima Tyree by Harlan’s Tyree. His sire was the double bred Two Eyed Jack stallion and AQHA World Show Super Horse Mr Baron Red. When bred to Two Eyed Jack, Ima Tyree produced the AQHA Champion and Superior Steer Roping Horse Two Eyed Tyree. This good gelding was also Superior in halter. When they bred Ima Tyree to Watch Joe Jack by Two Eyed Jack they got Watch Jo Tyree. This mare was an AQHA Superior Western Pleasure Horse and Superior Heading Horse as well as an AQHA Champion. The Harlan/Sandsarita nick was a good one as we have seen through Harlan’s Tyree. But when Sandsarita was bred to Mr Trouble, she produced Troublette. Troublette was bred to Harlan to get Harlan’s Trouble. This gelding was an AQHA Youth World Champion in Heeling and a Youth Reserve World Champion in heading in 1984 and 1980. He was Superior in open heeling, youth heading and youth heeling. When bred to Bradley’s Hank by Harlan, Sandsarita was the dam of Rey Hank 74. He in turn was the sire of Shesa Brick House. Shesa Brick House was out of Red Harletta by Harlan. This makes her Page 50
double bred with a 3 X 2 breeding pattern to Harlan. Shesa Brick House was the dam of 15 foals with 8 performers. Her foals earned over 600 AQHA points. One of the leading point earners was Bouncys Doll House. This mare earned 283.5 points in the open and amateur divisions with Superiors in open heading and heeling with a Superior in amateur heeling. The Harlan/Sandsarita nick is based on one of the famous nicks in our industry. Harlan was sired by Hank H by King P-234. Sandsarita was sired by Sandrift by Wimpy P-1. The King P-234 and Wimp nick has given the industry horses like Joe Cody. Joe Cody is an NRHA Hall of Fame sire for all of his great reining descendants including Topsail Cody, an NRHA Open Reining Futurity Champion. One of the performers sired by Harlan’s Tyree was Miss Tyrita. This mare was the 1975 AQHA Youth World Champion Heeling Horse. She was Superior in Steer Roping and the 1972 AQHA High Point Steer Roping Horse. Miss Tyrita was a full sister to Tyra, the third dam of Skips Harlan Tyree. The dam of these two was Oklacue. Oklacue was sired by Star Bright Moore and out of Sally McCue. Star Bright Moore was sired by Star Deck by Oklahoma Star P-6. Sally McCue was sired by Jack McCue and out of Babie by Jack McCue. The leading performer out of Oklacue was Miss Harlacue. Miss Harlacue by Harlan was a Superior Tie-Down Roping Horse and the 1976 AQHA High Point Tie-Down Roping Horse. Another thing about Skips Harlan Tyree is the Leo blood that he carries. The dam of Drifta Bar, the sire of Skips Harlan Tyree is Spanish Sheila by Scorpio Son by Win Or Lose. Win Or Lose was a son of Mr Bar None by Three Bars and his dam was Lady Leo by Leo. This is an example of one of the great nicks of all time Three Bars and Leo. This is where we will leave Skips Harlan Tyree as we have looked at two major areas of his pedigree and the successful crosses and nicks that influence his pedigree showing how they tie together. But as we look at the six Rodeo Horses of the Year find they have a common denominator and his name is Leo. So our goal from this point on is to focus on Leo and the nicks that took place with this great stallion.

U Of M Veterinary Medical Center Launches Nation’s First Animal Trauma Center New Center To Serve As Model For Other Universities And Veterinary Medical Centers Minneapolis/St. Paul (March 3, 2011) The University of Minnesota Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) has launched its Animal Trauma Center, the first of its kind in the nation. Based on the human model for clinical trauma care, the center was created to leverage the expertise and capabilities of the VMC’s board-certified specialists and to provide the comprehensive, team-based care important in treating dog and cat trauma and other serious emergency cases. According to board-certified veterinary criticalist Dr. Kelly Hall, the hope is that the new University of Minnesota trauma center model will be adopted by other large veterinary medical centers and teaching hospitals across the country, creating a network that will work collaboratively to continually develop methods to improve trauma patient care. “By working collaboratively with leaders in the veterinary trauma field throughout the country, advancements in trauma care will be shared between centers rapidly, assuring the most severely injured patients have access to the most advanced therapies,” explained Hall. Like human trauma centers, the Animal Trauma Center will also provide leadership in education and research. The Animal Trauma Center designation reflects a depth of resources as opposed to just an ability to deliver medical care. A veterinary trauma center ensures patient access to the expertise and resources needed in critical cases. Because care components are often tailored to each individual patient case, the VMC’s emergency/critical care veterinarians work closely with VMC surgeons, anesthesiologists, internists, radiologists, cardiologists, neurologists, and other experts representing 15 different board-certified specialties to provide the region’s most comprehensive, cutting-edge care. “Most animal hospitals are equipped to handle common animal emergencies during regular office hours, and a number of emergency clinics in the Twin Cities extend those services beyond normal hours,” said Dr. David Lee, director of the Veterinary Medical Center. “The University of Minnesota’s Animal Trauma Center is unique in that we’re able to quickly mobilize the critical resources needed to meet the needs of trauma patients. Just as in human medicine, not every practice or emergency clinic needs the ability to handle trauma cases – but a large metro area can benefit from having a designated center to serve the region.” Like a human hospital, the VMC also operates a 24-hour intensive care unit, as well as an on-site blood bank, full-service pharmacy, in-house clinical pathology laboratory, physical rehabilitation center, and one of the most advanced veterinary imaging centers in the country, complete with MRI and CT. VMC doctors are supported by a well-trained team of certified veterinary technicians, many of whom have advanced certifications in their service area. Examples of trauma cases capable of being treated by the Animal Trauma Center include injuries resulting from moving vehicle accidents, major falls, bite wounds, and smoke or chemical inhalation. In addition, most of the region’s police department K9 units rely on the VMC to provide care for canine officers injured in the line of duty. “It’s not unusual for a complex case at the VMC to involve a team of a dozen or more individuals, including world-renowned clinical researchers, veterinary specialists, house officers, technicians, and students, in a compassionate, patient-centered environment,” said Lee. “Similar to human patients traveling long distances for the best medical care available, “The VMC in St. Paul is known for providing the region’s most comprehensive and cutting-edge veterinary care. The Animal Trauma Center will only enhance that reputation.” The University of Minnesota first established a veterinary hospital on the St. Paul campus over a century ago. The Veterinary Medical Center has since grown to be one of the largest, busiest, and most advanced veterinary teaching hospitals in the country. The Truth Behind Your “Easy Keeper”-Equine Metabolic Syndrome By: Jessica Young, DVM All horse owners at one time or another have heard the term “easy keeper”: a horse that can seemingly gain weight on nothing but air. The truth of the matter is that these “easy keepers” are horses that may be suffering from a newly recognized and very serious disease called Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS). EMS leaves horses very susceptible to developing a variety of very serious and potentially life threatening health problems including laminitis (founder). What is EMS? It is a syndrome that has been recognized in equine veterinary medicine with increasing significance since 2002. As of yet, while much is known about EMS, there remains many questions as to the exact cause of the disease. Horses that may be affected with EMS are those that suffer either from generalized obesity or regional obesity. Regional obesity is characterized by excess fat deposits over specific locations in the body such as: the crest of the neck, shoulders, withers, tail head, and in the sheaths of geldings/stallions and the mammary tissue of mares. Mares with EMS may also cycle irregularly or not at all. In all horses with EMS there is a predisposition towards laminitis (founder) that develops without known causes such as grain overload, colic, or other systemic illness. So what causes EMS and why does obesity play a role? That is the question that many researchers are still trying to answer. Adipose tissue (fat) is no longer just considered unsightly to look at. It secretes hormones that can interfere with a variety of processes in the horse’s body including the action of insulin and the regulation of blood sugar. In general most horses with EMS suffer from insulin resistance (IR) where insulin is present in the body but no longer performs as it should. This ultimately results in a cascade of reactions that causes alterations in blood pressure and blood flow to various organs and tissues of the body, including the laminae of the hooves. This chronic state of IR in horses suffering from EMS is still being looked at as the possible reason for the development of laminitis. What has changed to cause this increasing problem of obesity in horses? Environmental (feed intake, level of exercise) and genetic factors play a role in the development of regional and generalized obesity. It appears that horses with EMS have enhanced metabolic efficiency in terms of utilizing nutrients from feed. Horses evolved as grazing herbivores with forage (wild and native grasses) as their main dietary energy source. Horses developed a survival mechanism to be able to utilize their diet intake very efficiently during times of environmental stress (winter, drought). Under modern conditions where feed is plentiful year-round, and with increasing situations of reduced physical activity (stall confinement, “pasture pets”), these horses are especially prone to obesity. Genetic predispositions are also being increasingly recognized with breeds such as the Warmblood, Spanish Mustang, Paso Fino, Peruvian Paso, Morgan, and all pony breeds being more commonly affected. That said EMS has been seen in every type of equine regardless of breed. The concept behind treating the disease is simple though the results often are not: less calories and more exercise. Dietary management of horses suffering from EMS involves lowering the NSC (non-structural carbohydrate or “sugar”) content of the diet. Reducing or taking away pasture grass from the diet is essential to the management of the disease as the digestible energy of the pasture grasses and the horse’s intake cannot be quantified. Removing grain products from the diet and switching to a hay-only diet that is low in NSC is also essential. Ideally the overall diet for the horse should contain only 10-12% NSC. Many types of hay (including grass hay) contain varying levels of NSC due to the type of forage in the hay, the growing stage/condition of the forage when it was cut, and the drying process. Hay with the lowest NSC should be fed and this can be calculated through laboratory analysis of a core sample of your hay. Soaking hay for 30-60 minutes in warm water and discarding the water prior to feeding is another way to lower the NSC content. This process may also leach vitamins and minerals from the hay, so it is important to replace those dietary components with products that are specifically designed to be low in starch such as forage diet balancers and low starch pelleted feeds. Horses with EMS can be turned out to pasture as long as they are wearing a grazing muzzle and prevented from eating fresh grass. Consistent exercise is also another vital component to treating EMS. This is often hard to do as commonly the syndrome isn’t recognized until the horse is seen by a veterinarian because of laminitis or the sudden onset of front limb lameness and the horse is too painful to be exercised. It is important to recognize that your horse is overweight and may be suffering from EMS and get them on the correct diet and path to losing weight before they develop debilitating laminitis. If you think your horse may be suffering from EMS, it is important to contact your veterinarian and get help in designing a correct feeding program. Restricting caloric intake too quickly and drastically can also cause serious health problems. It is important to analyze each horse individually and discuss diagnostic options with your veterinarian to decide on the best course of action to help them lose weight. The best way to keep your horse healthy is to watch their weight closely, provide them with plenty of exercise, and prevent the problem before it occurs.

The National Sorting Cow Horser Association PlayingLevelsField The NationalLevels Sorting Cowthe Horse Association the Playing Field By Jennifer Walker Kicking Up the Excitement for Riders and Crowds Alike Two riders. 10 cows. 60 seconds. The buzzer sounds and the contest is underway – cows are running, horses are working and the crowd is roaring! Ranch sorting is nothing new, dating back to early American working ranches when cowboys needed to move cattle from one pen to another for branding, doctoring and other necessary tasks. Today’s version takes sorting off the ranch and puts in the arena as one of the fastest growing equine sports in North America, and with the inception of the National Sorting Cow Horse Association (NSCHA), it has never been so exciting. Rick Gaston, NSCHA National Director, has been a fan of the sport for years but he saw a lot of room for improvement in the way the shows were run. "I started doing the research three years ago and got pretty excited about the concept of creating an organization that would level the playing field nationwide and track both horse and rider earnings," Gaston explained. "I wanted a concrete rating system that would hold ranch sorting together and make it a sport that would last a lifetime." In the past, while the basics of sorting have been uniform, competitors would not know from one show to the next what rating they would receive. There was also no regulated means of tracking performance. Gaston wanted to remedy all that, so he spent years talking to sorting competitors and organizations around the country to identify how they ran their events and what they wanted and needed in the sport. "One of the most important things people identified was that we needed to have a unifier: a global organization to hold the sport together nationwide. We needed a way to have a consistent rating and class system at every show, using dollars earned. They found it absolute necessary to keep a horse and rider earning archive, but that wasn't possible before. Competitors wanted a true world championship, but the sport was too splintered. With NSCHA, we've created a database to track and archive horse and rider earnings, we've standardized the sport, and we'll hold that World Championship." The top 100 money earners from each division from the NSCHA competitors nationwide will get to compete at the first NSCHA World Championship, which will run in January 2012, and offer winnings of $80,000. Dave Reigstad, who produced the first Minnesota NSCHA show at the Smilin D Arena in February added, "We'd have the jackpots at the shows, and the same people would come and win it every time. Over the years, I've seen my jackpots get smaller and smaller because people who weren't the best riders or didn't have the best horses would never go home with money so they'd stop coming. Now, with NSCHA's program, you have amateurs riding against amateurs. All of a sudden they have a chance." After several years of research, legalities, and detailed legwork, the NSCHA launched on January 14, 2011. "Our goal at that time was to sanction an average of one show per week nationwide and enroll one state per month," Gaston continued. "As of March 8th, we had seven states and 49 sanctioned events nationwide. We have thoroughly exceeded our expectations." Perhaps the biggest endorsement for the NSCHA was the show at Smilin D Arena in Kandiyohi, Minnesota, February 24-27, with a guaranteed $10,000 payout. With a blizzard the week before, three-and-a-half feet of snow on the ground and temperatures of -19 degrees, the show could have been a disaster. Gaston, show producer
