Mares With More

e all have dreams. We go to bed at night and sleep taking us to our dream world or we find ourselves daydreaming in a quiet moment during the day. No matter the type of dream we have, these visions allow us to focus on what we need to do, to be successful in life. As horsemen our dreams often focus on what we would like to achieve with our horses on all levels of the horse industry. We take our dreams through life with some of those dreams coming true and some not coming true. This is the story of one that did come true. It is the story of Al Hoots' dream to win the Kentucky Derby and how his dream came true through his race mare Useeit. But at the same time it is the story of Useeit’s influence on the American Quarter Horse an influence that lets her serve as one of our Mares With More. Useeit was foaled in 1907 on the ranch of her breeder C. B. Campbell. Campbell is a major contributor to the development of the American Quarter Horse. We don’t realize until we research the history of the state of Oklahoma that Campbell becomes a prominent figure in this state’s history. He played a key role in the founding of three towns Minco, Chickasha and Oklahoma City. Some of his activities include being the founder of the First National Bank of Minco and to helping form the First National Bank of Chickasha serving as its President for 38 years. His role in Oklahoma City comes through land ownership as he owned land where city is now located. Despite his success in founding towns C. B. Campbell was a rancher first. He was known for his success with cattle and was the promoter of the cattle feeding stock pens in Chickasha, Oklahoma. But he was most famous for his horses. He was a breeder of polo ponies and racehorses. His obituary described how “he brought Eastern teams to Oklahoma to compete with his polo team. His team would win. His polo ponies were world famous.”

By Larry Thornton

Bonnie Joe’s,’ he said of his youth in Mexico and the Southwest. “One of them always started sideways—they didn’t have gates back then—but he could wheel around and just seem to fall out of there, and he’d be on top. I think I won seven races on him when he was 10.” The dam of Useeit was Effie M by Bowling Green. Her dam was Alma Glyn by Glyndon. This makes Useeit a sister to Joe Blair who was sired by Bonnie Joe and out of a Bowling Green mare. Joe Blair was the famous thoroughbred stallion that sired Joe Reed P-3 the double grandsire of Leo. Al Hoots bought Useeit racing her for seven years. She amassed a record of 34 wins in 122 starts. She placed 38 times. She was noted as a sprinter that was not very good beyond six furlongs. She raced at such famous tracks as the Fair Grounds in New Orleans. She went against all comers including the legendary Pan Zarita a mare she was never able to defeat. Hoots was racing his mare in Mexico. It seems that for whatever the reason Hoots entered his pride and joy in a “claiming race.” No one knows for sure why he would do that because he could lose his mare if someone claimed her. One report stated that the men that owned the participants in the race assured him they would not put a claim in on his mare. Well somebody went back on his word and claimed her. But that didn’t stop Hoots from leaving Mexico with his mare. Some reports say he did it at gunpoint. He was then banned from racing and his mare banned from the Studbook. When Hoots returned home he became ill and he died. This is

This is Black Gold going to the post. He was the full brother to Beggar Boy.

The success of Campbell as a breeder of polo ponies and racehorses was based on the horses he used. One of his stallions was Bonnie Joe. Bonnie Joe was the sire of Useeit. Bonnie Joe was a son of Faustus by Enquirer. Faustus was out of Lizzie G. This makes Faustus a full brother to Mannie Gray, the dam of legendary speed horse Domino. Olin Gentry one of the most influential men in modern thoroughbred breeding gives us some personal insight into the Bonnie Joe horses. Gentry was the manager for Col. E. R. Bradley’s Idle Hour Farm and then John W. Galbreath’s Darby Dan Farms. Gentry was involved in the breeding of 9 horses that are credited with 13 wins in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and the Belmont Stakes to go along with one English Derby winner. A sidebar that accompanied an Edward L. Bowen biography of Gentry called “A Ballad For The Time” in the April 30, 1983 THE BLOOD HORSE quoted Gentry recalling his memories of the Bonnie Joe horses. He stated it this way, “I used to ride some of the Page 20

where several versions exist in that Hoots asked his wife, Rosa, to not sell Useeit and to breed her to a good Kentucky thoroughbred. Some say he specifically told her to breed her to Col. E. R. Bradley’s stallion Black Toney. Col. E. R. Bradley’s entering the picture with Black Toney is a major part of the story. Bradley is credited with getting Useeit back into the studbook. He had seen the mare run at the Fair Grounds and he was partial to this type of mare. Edward Bowen’s biography of Gentry recalled how Bradley was a stern man but he “was a kind-hearted man.” Of course Olin Gentry being the manager of the Idle Hour Farm and his association with Bonnie Joe horses in his youth gives us another interesting fact in this story. Rosa Hoots held to her husband’s wishes and kept Useeit. Rosa was an Osage Indian that at first didn’t have the money to send Useeit to Kentucky. But when the Osage Indians struck oil and the tribe members benefited from the oil royalties she had the money to send Useeit to Kentucky. Useeit was bred to Black Toney foaling a black colt in 1921. The Osage Indian success with oil gave the new black colt his name Black Gold. Black Gold went on to a highly successful race career winning 18 of 34 starts. He fulfilled Al Hoots’ dream by winning the 50th Anniversary of the Kentucky Derby. He also won the THE WORKING HORSE • SUMMER 2012

Louisiana Derby, Ohio Derby and the Chicago Derby. He was the first horse to win four derbies. He didn’t compete in the Preakness Stakes or the Belmont Stakes. Black Gold was retired but proved to be sterile and thus they brought him back to the track where at the age of five he broke down in the Salome Purse. He was buried in the infield of the Fair Grounds just as Pan Zarita was when she died. The success of Black Gold allowed Useeit to go back to the court of Black Toney and in 1924 she foaled Beggar Boy. It is through Beggar Boy that Useeit makes much of her contribution to the American Quarter Horse. Reports vary but most of them say that Rosa Hoots was the breeder of Beggar Boy. The Equineline.com pedigree for Beggar Boy gives no breeder for this horse. Thoroughbred Pedigree Query indicates that Col. E. R. Bradley is listed as his breeder. Beggar Boy went to the track with 39 starts earning a modest $5,662. He won five starts with seven seconds and eight thirds. The next breeder to enter the picture is Ronald Mason of Nowata, Oklahoma. Mason is a major breeder that stood the AQHA Studbook Foundation sire Oklahoma Star P-6 during this stallion’s last years. Mason added Beggar Boy to his stallion roster and as

we often say the rest is history. He bought Beggar Boy from Rosa Hoots. Ronald Mason and his Cross J Ranch became synonymous with good quarter horses especially good roping horses. Mason reported to Franklin Reynolds in The American Quarter Horse Journal biography “The Story of Oklahoma Star” that appeared in the June 1957 issue that his “best horses” came from the “mingling” of Oklahoma Star and Beggar Boy. It was this story that told that Rosa sold Beggar Boy to Mason. Photo Courtesy The AQHA Hall of Fame and Museum.

Little Peach and Beggar Pokey. Toots B was a full sister to Beggar Girl being out of Baldy Girl. Toots B produced seven ROM from six performers with two racing ROM and five performance ROM. Her leading performers were the AQHA Superior cutting horses Vandal and Mr Sagey. Both of these stallions were NCHA money winners. Vandal is the broodmare sire of Personality Doc, an AQHA World Champion Cutting Horse. Personality Doc is the sire of Doc Per, 1984 NCHA Open Futurity Champion. Doc Per was also the 1985 NCHA Open Super Stakes Co-Champion. Doc Per is the sire of Dixiland Docs Per, the 1991 NCHA Open Derby Champion. Vandal is also the sire of Miss Joann Van. Miss Joann Van is the dam of Joann Freckles, the 1988 NCHA Non-Pro Super Stakes CoReserve Champion. Brooks’ Tzena by Starway by Oklahoma Star P-6 was an ROM racing daughter of Toots B. This mare is the dam of Heleo. Heleo was an ROM arena horse and NCHA money earner. He is the sire of Holleo an AQHA halter point earner with 8 points. She is the dam of Docs Stylish. Doc’s Stylish is the dam of Docs Stylish Oak. Docs Stylish Oak is the sire of such noted horses as Stylish and Foxie, 1997 NCHA Super Stakes Open Reserve Champion, Stylish Playin, 1998 NCHA Non-Pro Super Stakes Reserve Champion and Playin Stylish, the 1999 NCHA Super Stakes Open Champion. Docs Stylish Oak is the sire of winners that have earned $8,673,024.

Oklahoma Star P-6 the stallion that teamed with Beggar Boy to become what Ronald Mason termed his best cross for producing roping horses. Mason believed that Cutthroat the dam of Oklahoma Star was sired by Bonnie Joe and Beggar Boy was out of Useeit by Bonnie Joe giving his special cross a genetic tie.

gelding that represents this cross was Baldy Boy by Beggar Boy and his dam was V’s Peaches by Oklahoma Star P-6. Baldy Boy was a successful roping horse and racehorse. He was reportedly used by such noted ropers as Jess Goodspeed. Baldy Boy was rated AA on the track. This horse equaled or set 8 track records at three different racetracks. Four of these records came at the Burwell, Nebraska track where he set track records at distances from 220 to 330 yards. He actually set a track record for 250 yards at Burwell going in the time of 14.5 seconds and then broke his own record the next year going 250 in 13.9 seconds. Beggar Girl was another runner sired by Beggar Boy and out of the Oklahoma Star mare named Baldy Girl. Beggar Girl was stakes placed in the Buttons and Bows Stakes at Albuquerque. She was another AA race mare just like Baldy Boy when AA was the highest rating. Beggar Girl became a broodmare for Walter Merrick. Beggar Girl introduces us to the producing daughters of Beggar Boy, which is a major source of Useeit’s influence on the modern quarter horse. Beggar Girl was the dam of six racing ROM runners. Her son Leo Bingo (bred by Merrick) was not only ROM on the track but also ROM in the arena and an AQHA Champion. Leo Bingo counts among his performers the 1969 NCHA Non-Pro Futurity Champion Chickasha Bingo and the 1975 NCHA Non-Pro Derby Co-Champion Chickasha Anita. Leo Bingo is the broodmare sire of Bingo Quixote, the 1980 NCHA Non-Pro Derby Reserve Champion. Bingo Quixote is the dam of the 1988 NCHA Super Stakes Open Reserve Champion Bingo Hickory. Bingo Quixote is the dam of Bingos Lena. She in turn is the dam of Dually Lena, the 1995 NCHA Open Futurity Reserve Champion. Some other producing daughters of Beggar Boy include Toots B, Page 24

Little Peach was another Beggar Boy/Oklahoma Star cross. Little Peach was bred by Ronald Mason but ended up in Arizona with Glenn Chipperfield. Her last owner was Vern Kelsey of Idaho. She produced top foals for all three of these breeders as the dam of 11 AQHA racing ROM runners. Her leading performer was the AQHA Champion Tinky Poo. This stallion earned 25 halter points and four performance points. He was also ROM in racing. Tinky Poo is the sire of such AQHA Champions as Tinky Louie, Tinky Hawk, Sweety Poo and Hobby Horse. Hobby Horse was a successful sire with his most noted performer being the AQHA Hall of Fame inductee Expensive Hobby. Expensive Hobby was the 1976 AQHA Open World Champion Senior Working Cowhorse, the 1979 AQHA World Champion Senior Working Cowhorse and the 1979 AQHA World Champion Senior Reining Horse. He earned money in the NRHA and the NCHA as well as earning an AQHA Superior in cutting. Hobby Horse was the sire of Poo Bug, the dam of Super Poo. Super Poo was the dam of Hicapoo, the 1994 NCHA Horse of the Year as winner of the NCHA Open Derby and as the NCHA Open Super Stakes Reserve Champion. Hicapoo is a proven producer through foals like Capoo a third place finisher in the 1999 NCHA Open Futurity. Capoo is the dam of horses that have won $776,367.10 with her top money winners being Al Poocino, ($255,332.00) and Bob Dualin ($222,402.88). Tinky Ann is a daughter of Tinky Poo. She is the second dam of the legendary quarter running horse Charger Bar. Charger Bar was out of LaRee Bar, who was out of Tinky Ann. Charger Bar was the 1971 AQHA World Champion Racing American Quarter Horse. She was a three time World Champion American Quarter Running Mare. She also is in the AQHA Hall of Fame. Another racing champion from a Tinky Poo mare was Mr Tinky Bar by Rocket Bar by Three Bars. Mr Tinky Bar was the1963 AQHA Racing Champion Two-Year-Old Colt. His dam was Tinkys Lady. Glenn Chipperfield also took the Beggar Boy mare Beggabird to Arizona. She was out of the Oklahoma Star mare Star Bird. She

produced two foals for Chipperfield. They were Jack Hammer, the foal Beggabird was carrying when sold to Chipperfield. This stallion became a halter point earner. The next foal was Bill’s Beggar by Chicaro Bill. This stallion earned his racing ROM and was a track record holder at Ruidoso going 250 in 14 seconds flat.

daughter Chouteau. We see that the owner of Catch Me when Chouteau was conceived was Matthew “Bones” Hooks. Hooks was the famous black cowboy and horseman as well as a well-known civic leader that promoted the well being of young blacks in communities like Amarillo.

The next owner of Beggabird was Harry Irving of Skull Valley Arizona. Irving stood the stallion Wayward Irving. When bred to Wayward Irving Beggabird produced five ROM race and show horses including Wayward Win ROM at racing and show as well as an NCHA money earner. Beggars Pokey was a black mare sired by Beggar Boy and out of Poco Antes. The pedigree of Poco Antes is unknown. Beggars Pokey produced several ROM runners and performers including the stakes placed Peter Hancock and Lowry Boy 2. The best runner out of Beggars Pokey was Pokey Vandy by Vandy. Pokey Vandy was a stakes winner in the Rocky Mountain QHA Futurity, the Gold Bar Stakes and the Autumn Championship. She was the 1955 AQHA American Quarter Running World Champion Aged Mare. She went on to be the dam of the great Pokey Bar, the 1961 All American Futurity winner and the 1961 AQHA American Quarter Running Champion Two-Year-Old Colt. One of the daughters of Beggar Boy was a mare named Black Widder. This 1941 mare was out of Grace H. Grace H is sired by Oklahoma Star P-6 and the dam of Grace H was Cutthroat. Cutthroat was the dam of Oklahoma Star P-6. The Franklin Reynolds story we quoted earlier in The American Quarter Horse Journal biography “The Story of Oklahoma Star” talks about how Oklahoma Star was bred back to his dam to get Grace H. Black Widder was bred to Vandy to get the mare Beggar Vanet. This mare was the dam of the AAA rated mare Miss Killoqua. Miss Killoqua was the dam of Rebel Killoqua, another race mare with a speed index of 107. Rebel Killoqua is the dam of Bestoqual, another AAA rated mare. Bestoqual is the dam of Ladies N Jens, also a race mare with a speed index of 108. Budderfly Effect is a daughter of Ladies N Jens with a speed index of 127. Budderfly Effect is the dam of Igotyourtac a bay 2009 colt that won the 2011 Golden State Million Futurity (G1). One of the great ropers of all time was Ike Rude an Oklahoma roper that was very familiar with the Mason bred horses. He is the man that started the great Old Baldy on his famous roping career. Old Baldy was sold to Clyde Burk and then Troy Fort roped on this great gelding both winning World Championships on this great horse. Some consider Old Baldy the greatest rope horse of all time. Old Baldy was not an Oklahoma Star or Beggar Boy bred horse. He was sired by Old Red Buck P-9 and out of the famous foundation mare Babe Dawson. Bay Babe was a full sister to Old Baldy. She was used in the Mason breeding program and produced a colt they called Buster. Beggar Boy sired Buster. Buster would become Ike Rude’s great roping gelding that he won many contests with. The available produce record of Useeit provided from Equinline. com indicates that she was the dam of only two thoroughbred foals. The produce record through the AQHA for Useeit indicates that she was the dam of two mares. They are Catch Me and U Tell Em. Catch Me was foaled in 1920 and U Tell Em was foaled in 1923. They were both sired by a horse named Jenkins Bob Wade. His pedigree is unknown. This Bob Wade is not to be confused with the famous racing gelding Bob Wade by Roan Dick. Catch Me has established her own branch of the Useeit family. She did it while coming in contact with some famous people. We encounter Catch Me through the registration application of her

Hooks a member of the National Cowboys of Color Hall of Fame was described in his Hall of Fame biography as “cowboy and horse breaker” that “raised horses in partnerships with white men and became a top horse breaker.” Hooks bred Catch Me to the famous John Wilkens who was owned by G. B. Mathis. Both of these men are listed on the application as living in White Deer, Texas. Mathis was the last owner of John Wilkens the famous son of Peter McCue and the sire of Joe Hancock. Mathis was a great believer in Peter McCue blood and considered John Wilkens the best son of this great sire. He owned this great stallion the last 8 years of his life. The third man entering the picture was Fred Lowry, the famous Oklahoma rancher and roper. Lowry owned such famous horses as Zandy and Lowry’s Mabel. Lowry’s Mabel was the dam of the stallions Sport, Fred Lowry and Star Duster. Lowry filled out the registration application to register the mare Chouteau. Chouteau was foaled in 1930 and registered in 1946. She produced several foals for Mathis including Blue Boy Chouteau, Major Wilkens and Regret. Her Fred Lowry foals include Gray Lowry an ROM racehorse. He earned an A rating on the track. Her foal John Caston was the earner of three halter points. Gray Lowry was sired by Zandy and Fred Caston was sired by Nowata Star by Oklahoma Star P-6. Continued on page 32... Gray Lowry was bred by Fred Lowry and sired by Zandy. His dam was Chouteau.

Regret was out of Chouteau and her descendants include the AQHA Superior Halter Horse Tamet.

Photo Courtesy The AQHA Hall of Fame and Museum.

Regret was bred by Mathis and registered when owned by L. W. Cox of Tulsa, Oklahoma. She was foaled in 1940. Her sire was Pyle’s Sonnie Boy. Pyle’s Sonnie Boy was out of a mare registered as Bess Davis. Bess Davis was sired by John Wilkens and out of a Mathis mare that was named Old Bess. This makes Regret double bred to John Wilkens. Regret was used as a broodmare by several breeders including L. W. Cox, R. Q. Sutherland, E. W. Brown III and Albert Paxton. She produced Jack Sparks, a stallion used by William R. “Bill” Thompson of Santa Rosa, New Mexico and former AQHA President. Jack Sparks sired several AQHA Champions including Bald Hornet Boy and Pino Connie. Downpour was an A rated race mare out of Regret. She was the dam of Drifting Miss. Drifting Miss was the dam of Duplicate Dude. This horse was Superior in trail and the earner of 59 AQHA performance points. Amogret was sired by Tamo and out of Regret. She was the dam of only three foals. She was the dam of Leotam Adams and Frosty’s Jag. Leotam Adams by Leo was a stakes placed runner with a third in the Triple R Futurity. He then went to the halter arena to earn 22 halter points. Frosty’s Jag by Coy’s Bonanza was an AQHA Champion with 42 halter and 37.5 performance points. Tamet was an AQHA Superior Halter Horse with 105 AQHA halter points. He was the earner of one AQHA performance point. Tamet was a full brother to Amogret. Tamet was the sire of Superior Halter Mare Miss Tamet Cue who earned 192 AQHA halter points. His other Superior winner was Harold’s Angel with 77 AQHA performance points and a Superior in cutting. She also earned $11,956 in the NCHA. Tamadonna was the AQHA Champions sired by Tamet. Rose Bell was Tamet’s racing ROM daughter. The story of Useeit is the story of how Al Hoots had a dream to win the Kentucky Derby. A dream that came true even after he passed away. But the success of Black Gold sent Useeit back to the court of Black Toney producing Beggar Boy. It was through this second mating that a lot of people fulfilled their dreams of owning a good horse. So our look at Useeit is a fitting tribute to the little Oklahoma mare proving that dreams do come true.

Page 32

A Common Bond Some of the names we have seen in this look at Useeit include Useeit herself plus Black Toney, Oklahoma Star P-6, Leo, Vandy, Three Bars and Chicaro Bill. A look at the pedigrees of these great horses shows a common bond between them through their pedigrees. 1. Useeit was sired by Bonnie Joe by Faustus. 2. Black Toney was sired by Peter Pan, who was sired by Commando by Domino. Domino is out of Mannie Gray. 3. Oklahoma Star P-6 was out of Cutthroat, who was reported by Ronald Mason to be a daughter of Bonnie Joe by Faustus. This is not the official pedigree but Ronald Mason believed the sire of Cutthroat was Bonnie Joe. 4. Leo was a double grandson of Joe Reed P-3 by Joe Blair by Bonnie Joe by Faustus. The sire of Leo was Joe Reed II, who was out of Nellene by Fleeting Time by High Time. High Time was intensely inbred to Domino with a breeding pattern of 3 X 3 X 2 to Domino. Domino is out of Mannie Gray. 5. Vandy was sired Going Light by Sweeping Light. Sweeping Light is out of Sweeping Glance by Sweep, a maternal grandson of Domino. The dam of Going Light is Our Sis by Tryster. Tryster is sire by Peter Pan, grandson of Domino. Domino was out of Mannie Gray. Vandy is out of Jean Ann Blair by Joe Blair by Bonnie Joe by Faustus. 6. Three Bars was triple bred Domino with a breeding pattern of 5 X 5 X 5 to this great stallion. Domino is out of Mannie Gray. 7. Chicaro Bill was sired by Chicaro, who was out of Wendy a daughter of Peter Pan by Commando by Domino. Domino is out of Mannie Gray. This is interesting because Faustus and Mannie Gray are full brother and sister. They are sired by Enquirer and out of Lizzie G by War Dance. Let’s carry this one step further by looking at the 11 racing ROM out of Little Peach. They include Bill Doolin by Chicaro Bill, Silver Bell H by Chicaro Bill, Peaches Hazer by Hazer (TB), Peaches Vandy by Vandy, Vanneva by Vandy, Tiger Van by Vandy, Peachy Poo by Count Diamond (TB), Boojum by Count Diamond (TB) and Wind Up by SongStylist (TB). All nine of these runners are sired by stallions that carry the blood of Faustus and/or Mannie Gray in one form or another in their pedigree. The thoroughbred stallions Hazer, Count Diamond and Song-Stylist do not appear on the list above but they carry the common blood of Faustus and/or Mannie Gray in one form or another in their pedigree. We really don’t know if this was all by accident or if it was planned but this type of breeding pattern with common ancestors on both sides of the pedigree is very common in horses that have been successful. We find this type of breeding pattern in many of the good crosses we call nicks. Bowen’s biography of Olin Gentry indicated that it was common for the Idle Hour Farms to inbreed to Domino to get their runners and this certainly gives us some food for thought!!!

The WORKING LINES

By Larry Thornton

The PC Brand— Pat Cowan’s Legacy

Cowan Brothers, Tregg, Tork & Tigh with Legendary Stallion Sunfrost The Cowan name and ranching in South Dakota have gone together since the late 1800’s when Lawrence Augustus Cowan moved into the state from Minnesota as a farmer turned rancher. His son, Arthur Paul Cowan, settled into ranching life by setting out on his own with a ranch at Highmore, South Dakota. Arthur added rodeo to the ranching enterprise as a roughstock owner and rodeo producer in the late 1940’s. So it only seems natural that when Pat Cowan a third generation Cowan (the son of Arthur) set out in life, he became a rancher as well as a rodeo performer. Pat Cowan took to his roots seriously and continued to develop his ranching interests while becoming a successful South Dakota rodeo competitor. He was the 1955 South Dakota Rodeo Association (SDRA) Champion Calf Roper and Champion Bull Rider. He followed that up with the 1958 SDRA All Around Championship adding another Calf Roping Championship and a Reserve Championship in Bull Riding. In 1959 he was the SDRA Reserve Bronc Riding Champion. Pat married Elayne Carmody in 1957 and they set out to continue the ranching life as a family. A new set of assets was added to the ranching enterprise as the family Page 42

grew to include nine children—Doug, Todd, Patti, Mari, Tigh, Caly, Shannon, Tork and Treg. Sadly they lost Doug as a toddler in a barnyard accident in 1959. The loss of Pat Cowan in a plane crash in 1985 brought some changes at the Cowan Ranch. One of the changes came with Tigh, Tork and Treg forming Cowan Brothers LLC. The three Cowan Brothers have continued the breeding program started by their father to provide the industry with a good all-around type of horse. How this breeding program got its start and the ingredients that gives them there all-around horse is the topic of this “Working Lines.” A recent interview with Tigh Cowan allowed him to outline what he sees as his father’s original goal, “I was probably 12 when he told me that you need to saddle the same horse on Saturday night that you saddled on Monday.” Tigh explained, “It took me a while but I began to understand what he was talking about. It was his goal to breed a horse that was big enough to rope on and go do what we needed to do on the ranch. It was a horse that had a lot of cow, which you could go rodeo on and he wanted a horse THE WORKING HORSE • SUMMER 2012

athletic enough to go cut on. Plus all of us boys were big and so he wanted a bigger, better boned horse that could to do it all.” Tigh continued, “To put it in a nut shell, he was terribly concerned about the versatility of his horses. He didn’t want one horse to rope calves on or one horse to cut on, or one horse to ranch on, he wanted to do it all on one horse.”

Stanley and Pat had rodeoed together and were good friends. Stanley was a well-known rodeo hand that competed in bulldogging. Stanley became even better known as a top South Dakota breeder of quality American Quarter Horses. Tigh remembers Stanley being around a lot which was was a sign of the strong friendship between Stanley and his father. One of the first horses to enter the picture for Pat Cowan was Laughing Boy. Pat and his brother-inlaw Tex Fulton bought Laughing Boy from Johnston. Stanley and Bill McNeil had claimed Laughing Boy in Arizona. They were partners in the horse. E.

Laughing Boy was an AA rated runner that Pat and Tex took back to the track as a seven year old. They competed against and beat horses that had officially run AAA times. Although Laughing Boy was a modest racehorse, this was the beginning of Pat Cowan delving into being a racehorse trainer. Laughing Boy became a key part of the fledgling Cowan quarter horse business in the roll of a broodmare sire. But Laughing Boy was only the beginning of the Stanley Johnston influence on the Cowan program. Stanley introduced Poco Speedy and the blood of Driftwood into the Cowan mix. Stanley owned Poco Speedy, who he had made an AQHA Champion. Poco Speedy was sired by Poco Bueno and out of Nellie D by Blackburn. The next phase of the Stanley Johnston contribution came with the blood of Driftwood. Driftwood was the famous match race and rodeo roping horse that became a great sire of roping horses. Stanley became interested in the blood of Driftwood after buying a gelding named Gray Chip. His son Randy wanted to use the horse for roping and bulldogging. Gray Chip, a son of Driftwood influenced Stanley to buy some Driftwood mares and they became a base for his breeding program, after crossing them with Poco Speedy. The next step for Stanley Johnston was buying Orphan Drift, a son of Driftwood Ike by Driftwood. The use of Orphan Drift by Pat Cowan introduces us to a significant contribution to the Cowan breeding program through Driftwood Ike. Orphan Drift was never shown in AQHA shows but was used regularly in rodeos by Randy Johnston. The pedigree of Orphan Drift not only brought in the Driftwood and Joe Hancock blood of Driftwood Ike but also the blood of Joe Reed P-3, Clabber and a mare named Phoebe C. Phoebe C has an interesting tie to our story. The dam of Orphan Drift was Orphan Annie C. She was sired by Tailor Made C by Joe Reed II by Joe Reed P-3. The dam of Tailor Made C was Betty Wood by Joe Reed P-3. Thus Tailor Made C was inbred to Joe Reed P-3 just like Leo with a 2 X 2 breeding pattern.

story. By visiting with Tigh you get a strong feeling of how he sees the contribution of Driftwood Ike to the Cowan breeding program, “I find it interesting at least in my little world, that everybody talks about Driftwood this and Driftwood that. I’ve been around them all my life but the only two that I really know are Lone Drifter and Orphan Drift. Even though they are both Driftwood Ike’s they are two completely different horses but they both bring us a tremendous amount of mind and athletic ability to keep us diversified.” (Lone Drifter is Mel Potter’s great Driftwood stallion used by the Cowan Brothers as a source of Driftwood Ike.) Clarence Bearry must be considered the dean of quarter horse racing in South Dakota and he makes a major contribution to the Cowan breeding program. Bearry was

Twilight C was the dam of Orphan Annie C. Twilight C was sired by the racing World Champion Clabber by My Texas Dandy. The dam of Twilight C was Phoebe C. Phoebe C was sired by Doc by Possum. Possum was the full brother to Little Joe the grandsire of King P-234. The letter C that accompanies the names Tailor Made C, Twilight C and Phoebe C comes from the breeder Chester Cooper of Roosevelt, Arizona. Silver was the dam of Phoebe C. Cooper used Silver’s daughter Peggy Cooper, a full sister to Phoebe C, to contribute to the pedigrees of such noted horses as Easy Six, Tonto Bars Gill and Missle Bar all through the tail female line. The Phoebe C blood found in Orphan Drift is interesting because the last owner of Phoebe C was Joe R. Bassett. Page 46

Bar and out of Whisper W by Joe Reed II making him a three quarter brother to Laughing Boy. The Clarence Bearry influence on the Cowan breeding program started at a rodeo in Fort Pierre, South Dakota. Tigh told the story of how his dad first saw John Red and got to know Clarence Bearry. He told the story this way, “He was in Fort Pierre and Dad told me how they had these big old rough hard running bulldogging steers and how if they caught them at all they were at the far end of the arena when they did it.” Tigh continued, “Well when the rodeo was over they had matched John Red and I don’t remember if he told me who they matched him with but it was just a two horse match race. So he walked over to watch. When they turned John Red loose he didn’t know what or who he had beat but he knew he had beat something and this left an impression." John Red was an Arizona racehorse. He was bred by famous quarter racing owner and breeder Rukin Jelks. Jelks had raced John Red who at one time was a co-holder of the world record for 220 yards in 12. 6 seconds at Tucson. He officially raced 66 times with 14 wins, 11 seconds and 12 thirds. He raced in official races until he was 8 years old. This does not include his match races in South Dakota. He was sired by Red Man by Joe Hancock and out of Just Sissy a thoroughbred mare by

Just David. John Red was the sire of only 113 registered foals with 19-point earners. His leading point earner was Miss Red Rack. This mare was an AQHA Champion, the 1974 AQHA High Point Steer Roping Mare with a Superior in Steer Roping and Halter. She earned 89 halter points with 12 Grand Championships and 120 AQHA performance points in heading, reining, hunt saddle, tie-down roping,

heeling and western pleasure. So with the Poco Speedy and the Driftwood horses of Stanley Johnston, and the Clarence Bearry horses like John Red, the basic ingredients of the Cowan’s breeding program were in place. But it is through the Cowan children that we learn about the final ingredient that fulfilled Pat Cowan’s quest to breed the versatile American Quarter Horse. The Cowan children like any good ranching family with a rodeo background became involved in high school rodeo and the 4-H. To be competitive you have to be well mounted and this took Pat and Elayne back to Stanley Johnston. This is where Elayne handpicked a gelding by the name of Runnin Gun. Again tragedy hits the family and Elayne passes away with a brain aneurysm shortly after Runnin Gun came to the Cowan Ranch. Runnin Gun would go on to be a top ranch and rodeo horse for the family. He was so good that a full brother named Quick Draw Cline later came to the ranch and the rodeo string. These full brothers became known as a top rodeo team used in a variety of events. Quick Draw Cline was the 1983 SDRA/NRCA Bulldogging Horse of the Year. Tigh was the first to show his prowess in the 4-H and

high school rodeo. He was the 1977 South Dakota 4-H Junior Boys All Around Champion, the 1979 National High School Saddle Bronc Champion, the 1982 National High School Rodeo All Around Reserve Champion Bronc Rider and the 1981-82 South Dakota 4-H Senior Bareback Champion. Tigh continued his rodeo after high school by competing on the college level and in the SDRA as well as the PRCA. Tork and Treg continued the family tradition with their

own high school titles. Tork was the 1987 South Dakota State High School Bull-Dogging Champion and Treg was the 1988 South Dakota All Around 4H Champion. When I asked Tigh if Runnin Gun and Quick Draw Cline fit the description of the kind of horse his Dad wanted, he replied emphatically “absolutely.” So let’s look at the pedigree of these ranch-using geldings look-

220, 330 and 440 yards. Her sire Texas Dandy was sired by My Texas Dandy, the sire of Clabber. Clabber was the first official World Champion Racehorse in the old AQRA. The dam of Doc’s Jack Frost was Chantella, an AAA rated runner sired by War Chant another AAA runner by Three Bars. The dam of War Chant was Hula Girl P by Ed Echols. Ed Echols was A rated on the racetrack. He was the sire of performance horses like Echo Reed, the 1964 AQHA High Point Tie-Down Calf Roping Horse. Ed Echols was a racehorse that was a paternal half brother to King P-234. Chantella was an AAA rated AQHA Champion as well. The dam of Chantella was Bardella, a full sister to Lightning Bar. Bardella was the 1952 AQHA Champion Quarter Running Two-Year-Old Filly and the 1953 AQHA Champion Quarter Running Three-Year-Old Filly. The sire of Prissy Cline was Driftwood Ike making her a paternal half sister to Orphan Drift. Driftwood Ike by Driftwood was a prominent rodeo roping horse and in the AQHA he was the 1969 AQHA Reserve High Point Steer

ing at how they were a combination of speed and cow sense bloodlines. Runnin Gun and Quick Draw Cline were full brothers sired by Doc’s Jack Frost and out of Prissy Cline. They were bred by Stanley Johnston. Doc’s Jack Frost was a son of the legendary Doc Bar. Doc Bar originally bred to be a racehorse failed to fulfill his potential. But he did find a place as the horse that revolutionized the modern cutting horse producing horses like Fizzabar, an NCHA Hall of Fame mare. Doc Bar was sired by the AAA rated stallion Lightning Bar by Three Bars and out of Della P by Doc Horn. Three Bars, the speedy thoroughbred that revolutionized the modern Quarter Horse, was the sire of 14 AQHA racing champions. He was also the sire of 29 AQHA Champions and four AQHA Supreme Champions. Della P was a Cajun-bred race mare from Louisiana. Her sire Doc Horn was a thoroughbred sired by Flying Squirrel. Her dam was a mare by Old D. J. the famous broodmare sire of Cajun-bred running horses. Old D J was the sire of Della Moore, the dam of Joe Reed P-3 and Joe Moore. Lightning Bar was an AAA rated AQHA Champion. The dam of Doc Bar was Dandy Doll by Texas Dandy a son of My Texas Dandy. Dandy Doll was an AA rated race mare with five wins in 21 starts. She won races at THE WORKING HORSE • SUMMER 2012

long time owner of Clabber and used him as a racehorse and ranch horse. The dam of Driftwood Ike was Hancock Belle. This mare was sired by Buck by the famed "Thoroughbred" stallion Chicaro. Chicaro became a noted source of speed through his get. He was the broodmare sire of the AQHA Hall of Fame stallion Top Deck. The dam of Hancock Belle was Miss Hancock by Joe Hancock by John Wilkens by Peter McCue. Joe Hancock is best known today as a great source of roping horses but he was originally a racehorse that that was “open to the world” as a racehorse. Josephine El was the dam of Prissy Cline. She was an unraced mare sired by Super Charge. Super Charge was an AAA rated runner that competed against Lightning Bar. He was the 1953 AQHA Racing Champion TwoYear-Old Colt. Super Charge was sired by Depth Charge, a noted "Thoroughbred" sire producing racing champions like Johnny Dial, a former World Champion Racing American Quarter Horse. Super Charge was out of O’Quinns Midget by King P-234. King P-234 became the great sire of performance Quarter Horses and was a proven roping horse in his own right. It is a little known fact that King P-234 was raced and won his only two starts both at 220 yards. The dam of Josephine El was a race mare named Webb’s Demon. She was an AA rated mare that was sired by Sonny Chicaro Joe by Chicaro and out of James Sunset by Little Joe. The breeder of Sonny Chicaro Joe was O. W. Cardwell the last owner of Little Joe by Traveler. Webb’s Demon was out of Quarter Queen by Old Poco Bueno by Little Joe. Old Poco Bueno was the sire of Miss Taylor, the dam of Poco Bueno. The dam of Quarter Queen was a mare by the source of speed Uncle Jimmy Gray. Uncle Jimmy Gray was sired by Bonnie Joe, the sire of Joe Blair, who sired Joe Reed P-3. Joe Reed P-3 was the double grandsire of Leo. Great geldings are the backbone of the ranching industry. They are key to our optimum use of a good working horse. But when we find a good gelding we are unable to use that horse to breed more good geldings. So the breeder will look to the siblings of the good gelding or geldings and that is just what Pat Cowan did. He bought Sun Frost, a 1979 full brother to Runnin Gunn and Quick Draw Cline. It didn’t take long for Sun Frost to prove he was going to be a worthy stallion for the Cowan program. Tigh won the 1981 Regional High School cutting qualifying for the state rodeo in cutting on Sun Frost. Sun Frost was a two-year-old. The showing of Sun Frost was limited as he became the senior sire of the Cowan breeding program. About the time that Sun Frost was coming on board as the new sire at the Cowan Ranch, Pat was building a broodmare band. We’ll let Tigh explain, “Dad went and got some John Red mares. He Page 54

toured around and got a number of those John Red daughters put together. They included Cougar Gal and Red Rockett about six or seven of those mares that he used and used hard. Those mares were gritty. Those mares were squared up kinda mares, a little heavy duty looking, but nicely made and pretty well tied together.” Tigh recalled one incident about the John Red mares that points out the kind of producers they were, “One of the mares he crossed on Orphan Drift caused us to giggle at him about using this mare. This mare wasn’t very pretty headed and he was lethal on things like that. But along comes spring and she has a buckskin filly and us boys are just ranting and raving over this filly. Well he informed us that he didn’t ask us to partner with him on this one and so he thought he would go this one alone.” Tigh added this about the John Red mares, “We rode a lot of those horses growing up and then he went and put those mares together, breeding a lot of them to Orphan Drift and then bred mares from that cross back on Sun Frost and that definitely was the plan and ultimately it worked well." “From my perspective what the John Red horses brought to the table was that they could take a lot of riding. You didn’t leave them in a stall and baby them. We worked cattle and ranched on them all week and then we would take them on the weekend and do whatever. They were tough with a lot of bone and with what you needed to be mounted to get the job done.” He continued about another quality the John Red provided for the cross, “The John Red horses had a lot of run and they had a tremendous amount of stop. You could be in a rock quarry and they would stop. You can see that today in these horses several generations away from those horses they have that stop. You can watch horses today and there are a lot of good stoppers out there but were they trained to stop or was it bred into them like these John Red’s have it. They knew that jerk was coming and they had it figured out and they would stop and get back and be tough about it.” Tigh then stated this about the John Red horses, “I look at the running horses today and then I look back and see that isn’t what Clarence had. You would see herds of the John Reds and the Polecats and he was mixing some serious stuff but they still rode. Pick Pocket came out of that and he was just a phenomenal horse that I rode.” Pick Pocket was sired by John Red and out of Lonsum Rocket. Lonsum Rocket was sired by Lonsum Polecat who was sired by Leo and out of Little Meow. Little Meow was the mother of She Kitty, Jack Casement’s great World Champion Quarter Running Filly. Lonsum Pocket was out of Sandy’s Rocket. A three quarter sister to Pick Pocket reinforced the performance capabilities of the John Red horses. Her name was Miss Red Rack the AQHA Champion sired by John Red. This mare was sired by John Red and out of Racket Gal by Sea Bar. Racket Gal was out of Sandy’s Rocket. Continued on page 56...

by the Crago Ranch. He was the 2000 WFQH Show All Around Champion. He was sired by Sun Frost. Another one of those John Red mares Pat bought was Cougar Gal. The dam of Cougar Gal was Lonsum Cougar, a full sister to Lonsum Rocket, the second dam of PC Bronsin. Cougar Gal is the dam of PC Lace N Leather. This mare was the Dakota Classic Cutting Futurity Champion. This line of mares comes from a foundation mare for Clarence Bearry. The founder of this line of mares was Silver Rocket. Silver Rocket was sired by Garcia Silvertone by Silvertone. Silver Rocket was out of Rocket whose pedigree is unknown. Silver Rocket is the dam of the full sisters Sandy’s Rocket and Palo Gal. Palo Gal is the dam of the John Red mare Boyd Flick. Boyd Flick was a great mare for Stan and Mary Kay Steyskal. This mare was the dam of several runners including the stakes winning AQHA Champion Flick Bar. The Steyskals were very successful with the daughters of Boyd Flick including Leota Flame dam of horses like Rainbow Rebel, an AQHA Superior performer in amateur western pleasure and hunter under saddle.

During our conversation Tigh pointed out how the horses used in the basic plan to reach Pat Cowan’s goal are still very important to their breeding program. We’ll let him tell us what he sees. “It hit me yesterday that we have a stud that we are using that is a Sun Frost that is out of an Orphan Drift daughter that is out of an own daughter of John Red. There just aren’t many of those horses around but those that are come from Dad putting those three together as a part of his master plan.” He continued, “We have this stud turned out with some mares and I found it interesting that when we watch that horse move, because phenotypically in his mannerisms, it is spooky of how he reminds me of those horses. My point is that you look for different things, like how quick their feet are, or how they do this, or how they do that and how the mind unwinds. When I see those things, in this horse, it tells me how prepotent or concentrated going forward that combination was. That tells me the type of colts we were getting on when I was 15, are still present today.” PC Marwood Sun was that horse. Our next installment of The Working Lines will continue with how the Cowan Brothers have carried on maintaining the Pat Cowan goal of producing a versatile using horse that will do it all.

Stanley Johnston and Pat Cowan

A third John Red mare we will look at is Miss 3 John. This mare was out of Carabelle by Sea Bars and out of Plaudit’s Golddigger by Lucky Plaudit. Plaudit’s Golddigger was out of Gold Digger II by Smokey Moore. Plaudit’s Golddigger was bred by Warren Shoemaker of Watrous, New Mexico. Shoemaker is an AQHA Hall of Fame breeder that based his breeding program on the bloodlines developed by Coke Roberds another AQHA Hall of Fame breeder. Roberds based his program on the AQHA Hall of Fame stallions Old Fred and Peter McCue. Page 56
