The Candy Man Can - A story for this year’s Fair

A long time ago in a land far, far away lived a charming and gentle candy maker. He was known far and wide for the sweet and delicious happiness he spread at small country fairs that dotted the kingdom. Does this sound like a fairy tale? To prove it’s true, you only need to step into Bruce Heveran’s candy booth, Old World Candies, at the Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair this year. Fudge, fudge and more fudge! Throw in some peanut brittle, a pecan roll and and numerous other varieties of sweet and delicious yummies and you have every child’s dream come true. Let’s face it, every person’s dream come true. That is what you will find this year at the Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair, just as it has been for the previous 44 years. Bruce Heveran of Old World Candies will be gracing our small country fair once again for the 45th year this September.

Bruce Heveran in his Old World Candies booth at an event this past month. Bruce holds a sweet spot in his heart for TBVF. It is one of the two fairs he has been attending year in and year out since the inception of his business, Old World

Candies, in 1974. It was on a whim that he and his wife decided to attend their first fair in Tulelake, almost by accident. The fair season had come to a close and when they returned home from the Lake County Fair in Lakeport, CA they got a call from Leona Carter, assistant to Bill Morrill, asking to come for only one year as the regular candy man was unable to attend. “What did we have to lose,” replied Bruce, We weren’t doing anything else.” So they packed their gear and away they went to a little known realm in northern California where he discovered the enchanted little hamlet of Tulelake. Thus the beginnings of this story took root. It has woven its way into our lives for nearly half a century, sweetening the lives of fairgoers, their children, grandchildren and maybe even a few great-grandchildren. Lucky for us the “year only” turned into another and another until we find (Continued on page 22)

When it was placed at the Fairgrounds, it became part of the museum, and the building was furnished as it was when it was part of the Camp. The other half is furnished as it might have been when it belonged to a homesteader. Members of Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair Friends and other volunteers have been refurbishing and repairing this building.

This is ½ of a barracks building that was originally in the Japanese Internment Camp, south of Tulelake. After the end of WWII, this particular barracks was moved by homesteaders to a farm located south of Newell, CA. The farm along with the barracks was later purchased by Hall Farms, and subsequently donated to the Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair by

She is the daughter of Craig and Myndy

Abigail Scanlan & Baylin Holbrook Holbrook of Macdoel, California. She has two sisters, Maren and Reagan. She enjoys playing sports, 4-H & FFA activities, fishing, kayaking, and having fun with family and friends. Baylin is a caring, friendly and outgoing young lady who is involved in numerous school and community activities. She is a member of the

Butte Valley High School volleyball, basketball, and track teams and has served on the Tulelake-Butte Valley Junior Fair Board for three years. After high school, Baylin plans on attending University of Nevada Reno majoring in Agriculture Business. The highlight of the girls reign will be the Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair as they each attend to their royal duties throughout the duration of the fair, September 6th - 9th, 2018.

Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair Friends

There are no slackers when it comes to the Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair Friends. These hard working folks are the movers and the shakers when it comes to making things happen for our little country fair. This past year has been a time of change for the fairgrounds as they have taken on a number of fairgrounds improvement projects. If you have ever done home improvement projects you know how a simple little renovation can become a huge expense. If you multiply that by 10 you can get an idea of what it takes to do it at the Tulelake-Butte Valley Fairgrounds. This last year saw a lot of planning and work as the staff proceeded with projects to replace all the lighting across the grounds with LED lights. No easy feat. The Fair Friends jumped in to help with a couple different fundraising events. With the harvest complete and the winter approaching it was a perfect time to celebrate with the Fall Harvest Party that raised over $10,000 to add to the Grounds Improvement Fund.

Members: Pam McFall, Jerry LeQuieu,: Pam Hiley, Pete Johns and Lorraine Fine,.

Later in the year, to break the doldrums of winter a Casino Night was planned. All who attended had an enjoyable evening while helping to raise over $10,000 for the Fairgrounds.

40 | 2018 Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair – Official Guide

Fair Friends and volunteers also remain working on the Museum Research Library and other exhibits, updating the old and breathing new life and a fresh look into the displays. Yet again the Fair Friends took on sponsorship of the Fair Court as they represent the Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair in and around the Klamath Basin at various events. In 2001, Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair Friends started with a generous endowment from Lilly’s Gift Foundation and some added donations that were given to help carry on the great tradition of our country fair. The non-profit organization was put in place to help manage the financial resources that were meant to carry on the work of the fairground’s museum, facilities and events. The fivemember board take the responsibility of their stewardship very seriously and seek to engage others in volunteering their help, and monetary support making it possible to remain a sustainable, growing and viable entity.

Garret Dean Guthrie July 5, 2005 – July 8, 2018

2010 was the first Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair Garret participated in; he was 5 years old and entered his goat, appropriately named Moo Cow, in Pee Wee Showmanship. The next four years he entered a rabbit Blacky, a chicken named Red, his bottle fed calf Minnie and he completed his last year of Pee Wee Showmanship with another bottle fed calf again named Blacky. He was an enthusiastic fair participant each consecutive year and in 2016 achieved the Reserve Grand Championship Replacement Heifer Award. We can all learn from how Garret lived, which was to live simply but like the gates were left wide open and to be kind, tenderhearted and always forgive one another.

Ride High In The Saddle

The following quotes pay tribute to this fine young man with a loving old soul. Though Garret’s life ended suddenly at 13 years, 3 days young, he lives forever in the hearts of all who knew him. “He grabbed life by the horns and showed us all what it means to live life to the fullest. He was a young man with a cowboy’s heart, an old soul and loved life beyond belief.” - Cameron King “Our chapter is going to miss Garret very much. He competed in Parli-Pro and absolutely loved it. We thank Garret for everything he did for our chapter. RIP.” - Tulelake FFA “Garret reminded me to keep Balou’s head up! I don’t know if I would have done so well without Garret.” - Maggie Ackley talking to her Mom at the Stateline Spectacular Jackpot “Garret’s love for animals and farming astounded me because what little boy wants to stay up all night and bale hay or check cows.” - Taylor Herman

“God bless you mom, you have a heart of gold but you can’t back this trailer up to save your life. Can I just do it?” - Garret Dean Guthrie, age 12

“He loved ranch life and thrived on it; even at his young age he had plans to grow his cow herd and buy his own bale wagon. We considered him our grandkid.” - Joe and Rhonda Hemphill “I don’t know any other 13 year old that could sort heifers from steers, run the sorting gate and get ran over and never weaken. He had a tight pocket and was very business-like. I already miss turning left in the driveway to pick him up, that’s the hardest part for me.” - Jessie Hemphill

42 | 2018 Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair – Official Guide

To Garret from his Mom, “Thank you buddy, for teaching me that I can do anything and for making me a better person. I want you to know Gus thanks you for being the best big brother and for everything you did for him. As for your Dad, you were his son and best friend and he will treasure all the memories. You always said our time was about quality not quantity, and that we live to work and work to live. You were wise beyond your years! I’m so thankful the Hemphill’s helped you fulfill your dream of being a true cowboy, not many 13 year olds have their own brand! Until we see you again.” – Carrie Guthrie Donations to the Tulelake FFA would be appreciated: Checks payable to Tulelake High School, Memo: Garret Guthrie FFA, PO Box 640, Tulelake, CA 96134. There will be an annual award in honor of Garret at the Tulelake- Butte Valley Fair.
