2017 farmers & ranchers appreciation day 17
Thursday September 7th @ 5:00 pm
The Hall Family will be honored this year in our annual Farmers and Ranchers Appreciation Day event.
Calling all Klamath Basin Farmers and Ranchers, come share a meal in appreciation of your hard work and endeavors in building our communities and feeding our nation. It is through your muscle, sweat and love of agriculture that our rural communities are sustained and continue to grow. Thank you for your part in that monumental task.
During this, our 12th annual event, 4-H and FFA junior exhibitors will display and sell their bred beef replacement heifers in a live auction. This event was inaugerated to recognize the efforts put forth by local farmers and ranchers and to express to them the appreciation of our communities for their service and hours of hard work in the field and on the farm.

tribute to kathy ackley - friend to all 17
20
Kathy Ackley was a long time friend and advocate to the Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair. She never knew a stranger or a task too big to tackle. Whether it was 4-H leader, Fair Princess advisor, Fair Board member, or Rotary Auction supporter Kathy was involved and gave her all. Her #1 passion however, was the Pee Wee Showmanship class which she sponsored through Dry Lake Ranch for many years. She was always ringside through the show, watching intently as the young up and coming showmen
presented their animals. Ready with a smile and a handshake, or hug to the competitors as they left the ring. Kathy will be greatly missed, but her spirit and presence will live on through the Pee Wee Showmanship class. The Kathy Ackley Pee Wee Showmanship Memorial fund has been created as a way to continue Kathy’s support and love for the Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair, and to ensure that the Pee Wee program continues. Donations can be made at any Umpqua Bank.

jim shanks - its all about the kids
When it comes to helping the youth, don’t get into a footrace with Jim Shanks. He’s a force to be reckoned with when it comes to our kids. Jim has been in it, to win it, for the past 30 years in the Butte Valley School District Agriculture Program. Initiating the ag program and FFA charter in Butte Valley in 1989, he is starting his 30th year and he seldom stops to take a breath. Jim graduated from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo in 1985 with a BA in Agriculture Science and a Masters in Agriculture in 1993 and moved to the area to go to work for Harold Porterfield, who he had worked summers for during college. Harold was a Fair Board member and always gave the crew time off during fair week to work at the fair. He had his first taste of
the fair on those summers filling in for Harold wherever needed. It was during one of those times flagging for Team Penning when he met the lady flagger, Judy Chapman, who
later became his wife. Of course, when they were married, where else would they have their wedding reception but the Tulelake Butte Valley Fairgrounds. You could say it brought them both together. Jim Shanks has been the energy behind the success of one of the most respected FFA chapters in the state of California, winning the Two Star National Chapter Award on nine separate occasions throughout his career. That honor does not come easily and unquestionably is backed up with a tremendous amount of blood, sweat and tears. The love he has for the kids, the program and his work is conveyed in the stories he shares and the time he has logged. Tulelake-Butte Valley Fairgrounds Map Outdoor display at the Museum This is ½ of a barracks building that was originally in the Japanese Internment Camp, south of Tulelake. After the end of WWII, this particular barracks was moved by homesteaders to a farm located south of Newel, CA. The farm along with the barracks was later purchased by Hall Farms, and subsequently donated to the Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair by
Clint & Mary Hall. When it was placed at the Fairgrounds, it became part of the museum, and the building was furnished as it was when it was part of the Camp. The other half is furnished as it might have been when it belonged to a homesteader. Members of Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair Friends and other volunteers have been refurbishing and repairing this building.

in memory - our fair champion, ralph morrill
20
Speaking of the champions, we had a Blue Ribbon Winner in Ralph Morrill, who passed away this past January. He left a legacy in place that will be carried well into the coming generations as a man who gave to the utmost and contributed his ideas, integrity, sweat of the brow and love to our little country fair. Our appreciation for his contribution to our success as a community can not be stated enough and we will miss him in the years to come. For those of you who may not of known this man, he came to the Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair in 1955 and took the helm as senior maintenance supervisor for the Fair. He was a natural in this position and meticulously put the pieces together and maintained the entire operation. After 14 years
as maintenance supervisor, and many projects completed, including; underground sewer, electricity, many buildings, trees, and fences, he accepted the position as secretarymanager of the Tulelake-Butte Valley Fairgrounds. His duties included; helping to plan fair
activities, entertainment and parades, and coordinating public use of the facility throughout the rest of the year. It is through his care and contribution that our fair is a matter of great pride throughout the entire Klamath Basin. Ralph retired in May of 1987 and remained active in the Tulelake community, serving as a member of the Tulelake City Council, president of the Rotary Club, as well as serving on the Lava Beds National Monument Council and staying active in his local church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. It is with great love that we honor him at this year’s Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair with the memory of his service. Thank you Ralph, you will be greatly missed and forever held in our hearts!

Miss Tulelake is seventeen year old Devon Massey. Devon is going to be a senior this year at Tulelake High School. She is the daughter of Veronica Duran and has two brothers, Dustin and Dakota Massey, and one sister D’Anna Massey. Devon is on the THS Student Council and she volunteers at TASSEL (Tulelake After School and Summer Education League) for kids in Tulelake. She loves drawing, playing volleyball, spending time with her family, and working at the after school program. Devon has entered several drawings and one painting at this years fair, and in previous years she has shown rabbits. She is excited to represent her community and fair because she hopes to be someone that children can look up to and make them want to become more involved in their

This year Kelly worked for the Youth Conservation Corps for the United State Forest Service during the summer and she really enjoyed the job. Kelly plans on entering several photos at this years fair, in previous years she has shown rabbits and goats. Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair Friends
We all have Facebook friends and old school friends, and work friends and of course a best friend or maybe even two. But, there is a special group of friends that believe so strongly in the Fairgrounds and the many events it encompasses, they have established a non profit organization called “TulelakeButte Valley Fair Friends” with a singular emphasis on growing and helping the fair. Some of the many adjectives to describe what they do might be: patron, backer, supporter, benefactor, sponsor, well-wisher, defender, or champion. What we like to call them is hard working best friends! The group is made up of five members but they welcome any amount of volunteers to join forces and make things happen for the fair. Those five workhorses are; Jerry LeQuieu, Lorraine Fine, Pam McFall, Pam Hiley and Pete Johns and they can often be found working on their latest project. Earlier this year it

was recovering, with tar paper, the barracks building that was originally part of the Japanese Internment Camp, south of Tulelake and later relocated to the Museum, (see inset for photo and details on page 24.) Fair Friends and volunteers are also working on the Museum Research Library and other exhibits, updating the old and breathing new life and a fresh look into the displays. Last year the Fair Friends took on sponsoring the reinstated Fair Court

as they represent the TulelakeButte Valley Fair in and around the Klamath Basin at various events. In 2001, Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair Friends started with a generous endowment from Lilly’s Gift Foundation and some added donations that were given to help carry on the great tradition of our country fair. The non-profit organization was put in place to help manage the financial resources that were meant to carry on the work of the fairground’s museum, facilities and events. The five-member board take the responsibility of their stewardship very seriously and seek to engage others in volunteering their help, and monetary support making it possible to remain a sustainable, growing and viable entity. What makes our little country fair so special? With a touch of patriotism, “We are a fair of the people, by the people and for the people”. We add an “American Flare At Our Country Fair!”

grand marshalls - ron & kay scholar written by Tracey Struble
We are proud to have Ron and Kay Scholer as our 2017 Tulelake Butte Valley Fair Parade Grand Marshalls. Ron and Kay both grew up in the Greensprings, Oregon area. They have known each other since they were in grade school. Ron remembers riding his horse five miles from his ranch to Kay’s family home to steal “smooches”. Married since 1963, the couple attribute their long romance to their joint love of hunting, dancing, the outdoors, their children and family, and their friends. Together they have raised two children, Scott and Michele. Scott and his wife Johanna have two daughters, Kara and Jordin, and one grandson with another grandbaby on the way. Michele has three beautiful daughters, Mandy, Ashley, and Bailey, who have blessed her with a total of seven grandbabies and one on the way! Ron and Kay are soon to be great grandparents and grandparents to 10! Ron and Kay moved to Macdoel, California in 1979 from Ashland, Oregon. Together they bought the
Macdoel General Store and began their new adventure in Butte Valley. They quickly became involved in numerous activities and clubs around the valley. One particular club, the Butte Valley Chariot Club, became a favorite. In the beginning the Scholers bought two appaloosas from their friends the Hancocks. Well, those horses couldn’t run for nothing so they decided to make a plan to get a good team going. Along with Wayne and Robin Hancock, they traveled to Idaho and bought two race horses, Ramblin’ Easy and One More Go. That’s when the winning started. They raced horses at the little dirt track in Butte Valley for over 20 years and bought, and ran, several winning teams during those years. As many of you know,

Ron likes to win! Ron remembers running chariots at the Tulelake Butte Valley Fair, along with participating in the team penning, team branding, and roping events. He, and Kay, have fond memories of the “old days at the fair”. They watched their granddaughter, Kara, show pigs (and win, just like her Grandpa likes!), and they’ve both worked numerous years in the Dorris Lions Club BBQ Booth. The fair holds a special part of their heart, not only did they enjoy the events the fair had to offer, but they especially enjoyed being around friends and family. After selling the store and raising their children, Ron and Kay built their current home out on Sams Neck Road. Ron and Kay have a way of making people feel loved. Their home is always open to the long ago friend passing through town, or the next door neighbor who just wants to visit. I don’t think they’ve ever met a stranger, and I don’t think Butte Valley would be the same without them.

Hold onto your wallet, the comedy’s an act, strolling around the grounds on their two horses you might think you’ve entered the screen show for the Muppits version of “Jessie James”. Laughter is the medicine of the day!
