BULL BOARDING PROGRAM AVAILABLE SEE PAGE 3 FOR DETAILS
Dear Fellow Cattlemen, It is a pleasure to invite you to the 47th Annual Heart of the Herd Production Sale and the opportunity to select from a sale offering that has been developed through performance and carcass evaluation leading to an outstanding sale offering. The Varley's dedication and desire to make lasting improvements to the Angus breed is evident. Their program offers a predicatable soure of good doing cattle that have been developed for functionality, ignoring fads and trends and applying the resouces available to produce profitable beef cattle. The most economical way to save time in a cow/calf operation is to buy cattle that are time efficient. Cattle that are easy to handle, save time, money and labor. These cattle are bred to survive and excel in a commercial cowman's environment and the cow families represented in this offering have a long history of real world production. The tools available to assist in herd selection have become more numerous, sophisticated and accurate everyday, but the basics remain and the Varley's have kept in mind the important production traits that impact your bottom line including disposition, mothering ability, fertility, phenotype, calving ease & udder quality. Whether you're in need of bred heifers, replacement heifers, top prodcution cows or natural service sires...you can find it here. Don't hesistate to contact our office or the Varley's with any questions you may have. Sincerely, Al Conover

Dear Angus Breeders, Cattlemen and Friends, Time flies and waits on no man. We had the harshest winter, earliest spring, wettest summer and driest fall in recent history. We are grateful for many things, including our “Freedom”, our reliable and faithful military and our current good agriculture position. Our grandson who was a Marine and spent a time in Iraq is now back on the farm. He graduated from Iowa State University and is now helping with the “Changing of the Guard”. Ha! His grandfather is finding a youthful hand helps complete the circle. As to our sale offering, this year we have a top group of cattle. The yearling bulls represent several top sires, including SS Objective T510 0T26, Connealy Reflection, FV 20K King 308M (a bull used extensively at Schaffs Angus Valley), SAV 004 Traveler 4469 (a full brother to the $57,000 “SAV Heavy Hitter” and the $37,000 “Clark”) and MCATL Broadwalk (top son of HSAF Bando 1961). The bred heifers are medium framed, long sided females carrying the service of our very outstanding, popular son of HARB Pendleton 765 JH, “MCATL Finality” of whom we have already sold semen to breeders in four states. Some of them are also bred to MCATL Broadwalk and to SAV King of Scotland 8479, a bull Schaff put on display as a calf at the North Dakota State Fair. The yearling heifers are the “Cream of the Crop”. Put a group of these together and breed to “Finality” or “Impression”, our bull featured on page 7 of the recent ABS Sire Directory, and you’ll be in business. The two featured yearling heifers are very correct, stylish and show prospects. Our family no longer show cattle, so we offer you our tops. The “Grand Ole Matrons” we offer you with their offspring at side display their ability to produce top calves. The first calf they produce could pay for your
investment. We sold out of the 2009 bulls in the spring, so we don’t have any two-year-olds. Our yearling bulls are growthy, so can handle 20-25 cows. We truly apprectiate the confidence all the cattlemen and past buyers have shown in our herd of cattle the past 45 years. I was reminiscing and ran across an old 1965-1980 period catalog where I had listed two full pages of champions we had shown at the Iowa State Fair, Nebraska State Fair, Ak-Sar-Ben in Omaha, NE, American Royal, Annual Iowa State Show and Sale and local fairs. Our customers from coast to coast have shown many champions from our herd. We celebrated 62 years of marriage plus 62 years in the Angus business. We have seen many changes in the Angus business and survived them all, thankfully. Come join us Saturday, January 22, 12:30 p.m. for a complimentary lunch, a good time and the sale. We treasure and thank our loyal customers and friends and invite new ones. Sincerely, The Varleys P.S. - Our fat cattle continue to do well on the grid. Our loads of cattle straight across average 1,262 lbs at approximately 13 1/2 monts of age, 98% Choice or Prime and dressed average of 66% averaging 60% to 70% Certified Angus Beef®. The proof is in the pudding. Ha!

This bull will make a big bull siring lots of pounds but still has moderate numbers. We are selling his mother as a featured cow. • His dam goes back through Black Thunder of VAF, a top son of Pine Drive Big Sky, sons of the old Eileenmere breeding. In his day he was considered one of Pine Drive Big Sky’s best three sons. He was a Denver show bull, weighed 2,780 lbs and had a beautiful profile. • Longs Queenmere 30 produced a $3,700 QAS Traveler 23-4 son. • As I mentioned before, EPDs are nine times more important in selecting an animal than 205 Wts. and ratios. • These bulls have been near our house all summer and have become very docile standing to be brushed in a sizeable pasture.

He has sired offspring with volume and pounds. His dam is the top indexing female in Musgrave’s herd. His sire, HSAF Bando 1961, is a real influence on the Angus world. He is a bull with great phenotype, volume and style. • WAR Alliance 9126 6006 appears in many pedigrees associated with top gainers. • The sire of the maternal granddam, Connealy Dateline, has sired many top females in the breed. • This has been one of our son’s top cow lines. His dam has been a consistently good producer and we are sharing her with you. She is an easy keeping cow but puts a lot into her calves. • If wanting to add “beef” to your herd, consider this calf.

It has been our experience that a Milk EPD in that category is the best range to maintain longevity in your cows and yet get maximum growth on your calves. • I was amazed when I started writing footnotes how many animals’ pedigrees BT Freeway 91F showed up in. He was one bull we drove to Montana to buy, and after an aggressive bidding against Pat Goggins of Montana, we came home with him. He was today’s kind of bull, thick, high volume, deep sided, excellent bone and his daughters had plenty of milk to raise big calves but maintain their longevity. • HSAF Bando 1961 is used extensively A.I. adding phenotype, beef and style to his many champion offspring.

HSAF Bando 1961 was one of the top A.I. sires whose semen was in or near the top of semen sales. • WAR Alliance 9126 6006 is a big framed heifer bull (BW +1.4 EPD) that delivers fabulous growth performance. He has volume, length and eye appeal. • His dam, Queen Alice 850, stems from the Queen Alice family of cows our son purchased at Slagle Angus in Nebraska several years ago for $15,000. We used her in transplant and a $25,000 daughter of hers produced Black Thunder of VAF, a $15,000 bull that was owned by Roger Pierce, Walnut, IA; Kading Farms, Casey, IA; Don Felton, Neola, IA and Varley Angus. You will find a clipping in this book I ran across the other day in an Angus booklet saying EPDs are nine times more accurate to actual abilities of animals as are 205 day weights and ratioes. I have believed this for a long time. Too many variables in 205 day weights and ratioes. They were designed to be used within a herd, not to be used as a comparable. • The dam of this bull was purchased from Musgrave Angus in Illinois. She was one of the top heifers of the day, being recommended by the breeders. She traces to Hyline Right Time 338, a well-known female sire and to HSAF Bando 1961, a nearly perfect phenotype bull who has sired many champions. • The sire of this bull, SS Objective T510 0T26, is well-known throughout the breed for his outstanding EPD numbers and carcass qualities. • Individual Performance: BW 76 lbs, BWR 94, 205 Wt. 637 lbs, WWR 105 with 55 contemporaries. • Dam’s Production: 3 BWR 96, 3 NR 101. • As you can see by our pedigrees SAV 8180 Traveler 004 cattle have done well for us. We feel 205 day weights should be compared within herd only, as there are so many ways of handling cattle, feeding cattle, weighing time, etc. We do take about eight or nine bull calves up to our small acreage in a nearby town where they are creep fed and run in a smaller pasture. The rest of the cattle ran in pastures up to 100 and 200 acres in size, thus more conducive to grass growth until we bring them in hopefully in October. Then they are on an accuration diet and a full feed of hay to grow and bring up to sale shape. • Another bull that would work great on heifers with a +2.3 BW EPD, once again a Milk EPD or +21, actual birth weight of 76 lbs, 205 day weight 637 lbs. All animalsin sale poured with Ivomec and received all shots.
• Individual Performance: BW 68 lbs, BWR 83, 205 Wt. 650 lbs, WWR 103 with 43 contemporaries. • Dam’s Production: 3 BWR 97, 3 NR 98. • Talk about a spread on EPDs, this young prospect is a prime example. BW +0.7, WW +56, YW +96, Milk +23. This is rather typical of the SAV 004 Traveler 4469 calves. • This is a well bred calf. On his dam’s side Lass Grand V514, a daughter of our old Lass Trend N Bar K 1327 cow produced a $2,800 bull selling to Kading Angus Farms, Casey, IA. Her mother produced a $7,000 bull going to a new herd in Illinois and was the granddam of “Priceless”, a heifer we sold to Jud Baldridge for $4,000 who in turn produced a $30,000 top-selling bred heifer in one of his recent sales. A tremendous investment on his part. • All these bulls will be ultrasonded before the sale. 12

He got his name because Schaff Angus Valley nicknamed his sire “Bear” because of his beautiful, heavy hair coat. This is a favorite of mine as he displays a lot of volume, bone, thickness and hair. • The dam of this bull is a TC Freedom 104 daughter. He is the top breeding son of Connealy Forefront. • The maternal granddam is a BT Freeway 91F daughter. Whenever you see BT Freeway 91F in a pedigree, you know it means volume, fleshing ability and pounds. • SAV King of Scotland 8479 was our choice of the FV 20K King 308M sons in Schaff’s 2008 sale. His sire was a bull Schaff’s selected to use as an outcross bull. He is an outcross bull with volume, thickness and excellent phenotype. Schaffs had him on display at the North Dakota State Fair as one of three calves. They nicknamed him “Bear” because of his extremely heavy coat of hair. • This young sire’s mother is a product of Baldridge Forward 78F, one of “6807’s” best sons. We purchased him at Jud Baldridge’s sale in Nebraska. He was one of the thickest bulls we ever used. He was moderate sized with lots of volume. • The maternal grandsire, Baldridge Krug K834, was the top two-year-old bull at a Baldridge sale. He was admired by many who saw him sale day. He was a really stout, thick, heavy boned bull that sired calves much like he was. • Balanced EPDs on this individual. SAV King of Scotland 8479 calved easy as I expect his sons to do also.

I laughed and said, “NO DEAL!” He thought I had possibly watched the Deal or No Deal program too much on TV. Anyway, she is in the sale for everyone’s analysis. • She is sired by Selective 004, an own son of SAV 8180 Traveler 004 whose daughters have been winning many shows. She should make an excellent cow. Her mother is a product of show animal ancestors. Blackcap Mary, a top show heifer for one of our children. His dam was a top daughter of BT Freeway 91F, a bull we purchased in Montana at Beartooth Ranch, and he left us with an outstanding group of matrons that were excellent milkers, high volume, beefy and consistent producers of pounds. The maternal granddam, Blossom V370, was a beautiful big cow out of Blossom V049 who produced several top sale animals. • I have to admit with all the rain we had this summer I didn’t get to drive the pasture as much as usual, thus not getting an accurate grade on all of these heifers. Our herdsman, Bret Brown, an excellent cowboy, helped me pick out the sale offering and did a lot of the analysis of the animals.

We all know what Predominant has done in a Canadian herd as well as being a top A.I. sales bull. Not often do you get a chance to buy a group of heifers bred like these “4469” females. • Sells open. This could make a nice show heifer. Some 4-H’ers like a heifer to show in a different class. This would make a good heifer to show then hold over and breed when she will be a little older when she calves. Individual Performance: BW 78 lbs. Dam’s Production: 2 BWR 99, 2 NR 110. I marked this as a good heifer. She is a bit younger but caught my eye. MCATL Traveler 538-822, an own son of DHD Traveler 6807 we bought in Illinois. His dam is the mother of the embryo we put in a recipient cow sired by “SAV Bismarck”. • MA Miss Emulous 822 had a $11,500 heifer and another high selling bull in the same flush as our herd sire MCATL Traveler 538-822. • Connealy FF 156 was our choice of the Connealy Forefront sons at a Connealy sale in Nebraska. Mr. Connealy helped us with our selection. Connealy FF 156 left us a lot of beefy daughters and good milkers, he being a paternal brother to TC Freedom 104, a great breeding bull. • SVF Oscar 120C, top-selling bull at a Sunny Valley Sale, is a bull with thickness, volume and eye appeal.

• Individual Performance: BW 72 lbs, BWR 94. • Dam’s Production: 2 BWR 100, 2 NR 94. • A heifer sired by our young herd sire, MCATL Traveler 538-822. We wanted to infuse some more DHD Traveler 6807 blood into our herd. We located this son at Musgraves in Illinois and he was out of MA Emulous 822, the dam of a $11,500 heifer calf that day, being out of the same flush. She also is the dam of the $20,000 “Broadside” bull at TC Ranch in Nebraska and our MCATL Broadwalk bull, Lot 1 in their 2007 sale. • Baldridge Maestro M38 sired us some top females and his dam GAR Ext 614, one of top matrons in the breed. His EPDs were excellent, as are the EPDs of this heifer. • Sells open. Calfhood vaccinated, as are all the heifers, and poured with Ivomec.

• Individual Performance: BW 69 lbs, BWR 92. • Dam’s Production: 2 BWR 88, 2 NR 98. • This is a “Broadwalk” female sporting an excellent set of EPDs. Her dam’s maternal sire, SAV Peacemaker 5076 is a very long sided, thick, upheaded bull sired by SAV Peacemaker 3179, highest volume sales of any bull at Schaff Angus Valley. They are now using several “Peacemaker” daughters for foundation cows. Paul Hill of Ohio has shown and sold some beautiful “Peacemaker 3179” daughters, one for $30,000. • New Desire V004 was a “New Design 036” bred bull who sired a 6+ lb. per day gaining bull at an Iowa test station. His mother was a BT Freeway 91F daughter. • MCATL Broadwalk sired us a beautiful set of heifers and we are only parting with a few. Put a group of these “Broadwalk” and “4469” daughters together and you’ll soon have a top herd of cows. We have sold these yearling heifers to 38 states and Canada. It makes it all worthwhile when you hear from Florida, Texas, Washington state, New York, Arkansas, Tennessee, etc. and they send pictures and tell of their championships, etc.

• Individual Performance: BW 81 lbs. • Dam’s Production: 2 NR 100. • I marked this heifer as being thick and having volume. As I stated before, this is the first year in many years I didn’t get to follow up on these heifers all summer. The pastures had too many wet spots and questionable crossings. • The sire of this heifer, MA 1961 Bando 986, was the top weight per day of age bull in Musgrave’s 2007 sale. They retained a full brother for their own use. His dam was the top indexing female in their herd. His offspring have extra volume, bone and muscle. • Baldridge Krug K834 sired many stout bulls that averaged a little over $3,000. “1961 Bando” has sired a lot of show cattle. • Barbara V761 was always one of my favorite cows, she being the maternal great-granddam.

• Individual Performance: BW 73 lbs. BWR 94. • Dam’s Production: 4 NR 99. • Another set of excellent EPDs. This young female comes off the Duchess cow line. Duchess V517 was a show heifer for our granddaughter. Duchess V725, her daughter sired by Connealy Dateline, has been one of our top producers. • We are only parting with a few of these SAV 004 Traveler 4469 daughters. They will be worth more every day you own them. • Today I spoke with Tom Rooney and we discussed some of the young heifers that we have sold in past sales. Walt Hoover purchased Shottish V047 in our 1991 sale. Today, she and her daughters and granddaughters are considered the best cow line they have, producing Hoover Dam, full sister Hoover Dame, plus several other top bulls they have sold. Also, one heifer produced the Grand Champion Iowa State Fair Maintainer Female for Rory Went in Nebraska. Another heifer sold to Jud Baldridge called “Priceless”. She produced top-selling bred heifer at one of his sales selling for $30,000. She was named right. Ha! I 17 could go on and on, but these are three of the more recent ones.
• Individual Performance: BW 76 lbs. • Dam’s Production: 1 NR 130. • This deep bodied, fleshy, well-balanced heifer has some excellent EPDs. Not often do you get a heifer with a 100+ YW and Milk +28. • “SAF Neutron” was a bull we used A.I. from Sydenstricker Angus, he being the sire of the maternal granddam. MCATL Broadwalk has done us a tremendous job. His calves are easily spotted in the pastures. They are growthy, thick, with eye appeal. • We dug pretty deep to get these heifers put together. We like to share a good cross section of the herd with you. • Her dam was kept and then sold at 10 years of age because she was a top producer. • Sells open.

• Individual Performance: BW 78 lbs, 205 Wt. 510 lbs, WWR 93 with 24 contemporaries. • Dam’s Production: 1 NR 93. • A bred heifer I hated to part with. Her dam is a daughter of BR Midland, a bull who topped the Midland Bull Station and was bred by Bobby Wastson from Indiana. • Her dam’s dam was out of our outstanding breeding bull “Maestro M38” whose numbers were excellent. Jud Baldridge was the breeder who called our attention to him along with the Conovers. • The maternal great-granddam, “V874”, was a top producer and one of our best bull calves this year was out of a son of hers. She was a BT Freeway 91F daughter back to the “Everelda Entense 1905” cow. • The sire, MA 1961 Bando 986-331, was the heaviest calf in Musgrave’s 2006 calf crop. He had excellent numbers and was sired by the beautiful profile bull HSAF Bando 1961, who is used extensively A.I. by many top breeders. • Bred A.I. 5-29-10 to “Finality”. Later pasture exposed to SAV King of Scotland 8479, sire of possibly the top yearling bull calf in this sale. Approximate due date last of April 2011 to “King”.
• A.I. bred on 78 lbs, BWR 97, 205 Wt. 568 lbs, WWR 100 with 43 contemporaries. • Dam’s Production: 5 BWR 100, 5 NR 95. She posts 1 @ Rib Fat 58, Rump Fat 55. • Another Selective 004, a bull whose dam was a thick, high volume, heavy bone feminine cow that was an excellent producer. • The BT Freeway 91F daughters were heavy milkers. His dam, “Everelda Entense 1905” at Beartooth in Montana was probably the best cow I have ever seen. Her offspring have been highly regarded throughout the Angus world. Ed Wiederstein, Audubon, IA purchased an “Everelda Entense” heifer from us and told me she produced some of his best calves. • Baldridge McGraw 154 was our choice of the Connealy Frontline sons in a past Baldridge Place Sale. He sired us several top producing daughters. • Pasture exposed to “SAV Scotland 8479” from 5-27-10 to 9-30-10. His calves seem to have extra weight at weaning, are moderate in size and have wonderful hair coats. 20 Approximate calving date early or middle of April 2011.

Bon View New Design 1407, maternal great grandsire was one of the most heavily used A.I. sires in the breed. • Lass Trend N Bar K 1327 was purchased from the Wertenbergers in Kansas. The sire of this female, SAV Peacemaker 5076, is a long bodied bull displaying the same profile of his famous sire, SAV Peacemaker 3179 who sired excellent cattle for Schaff’s and Paul Hill. • The dam of this heifer traces to Baldridge Forward 78F, a top son of DHD Traveler 6807 whose females are awesome. • R&J Cruz 109 we used A.I. and produced several top selling bulls out of him. He is still thought of today as being a top breeding bull. • I marked this as a good heifer with frame and depth. She sells A.I bred to “MCATL Finality” on 5-4-10. “Finality” was a top selling bull for $20,000 being out of “HARB Pendleton”, a top son of “Final Answer”. “Pendleton” sons are in high demand, displaying excellent phenotpye, excellent EPDs, ribeye and carcass qualities. One topped the Midland Bull Test Station last year. These heifers carrying a “Finality” calf could be carrying your next herdsire.

She produced a son of HSAF Bando 1961 that we used as a junior herd sire, he being the sire of one of the top young bulls in our this year sale. She is a cross between BT Freeway 91F and TC Doctor Zhivago, and $80,000 bull. • Her dam, Blackcap Elbena 403, was the $4,100 cow in our 1991 sale. • Baldridge Krug K834 was a real favorite of Dick Beck and Jud Baldridge in a past Baldridge Sale where he was the top-selling two-year-old bull. • Sells with a 3-17-10 heifer calf at side by the outstanding breeding bull MCATL Broadwalk. This cow sells pasture bred after 5-19-10 to “MCATL Finality”, a $20,000 bull at Musgraves 2010 sale. “Finality” has some of the best EPDs in the breed, and his profile and phenotype are unequaled. We have already sold semen to four states. He will be on exhibition January 22 weather permitting. Vet believes due late February to early March 2011.

• Production: 7 NR 100. Calving Interval 7 @ 367 days. • Dam’s Production: 10 NR 101. Calving Interval 10 @ 368 days. She posts 2 @ IMF 101, Rib Fat 96. • The dam of this cow produced a $4,200 heifer calf selling to Sam Carter in Indiana. R&J Cruz 109 was an A.I. bull we used, and he sired some outstanding females and bulls, including the “Chubby Chase” bull the Burton Powell & Sons herd at Casey bought for $3,800. Dale Weeks at Winterset purchased a Blossom heifer from us, and she became a Pathfinder cow. Leachman Prompter is the sire of the dam of one of the young bulls Angus Semen Service in Purcellville, VA featured in their 2010 Sire Directory. Breeders are resorting back to some of the older genetics. • Bushs Zoro weighed 2,700 lbs when we sold him. His dam, Bushs Lady Dividend 872 has to be considered one of the all-time great cows. • Sells with a 3-17-10 stylish, long bodied, framey bull calf at side, selling off, sired by Selective 004, an own son of SAV 8180 Traveler 004, Schaff’s great breeding bull. Pasture exposed and bred after 5-12-10 to SAV 004 Traveler 4469. Approximate calving date late March 2011. This could be an excellent mating. The “4469” calves really “stick out” in the pasture.

She had a wonderful mother, Blackcap Ellie V874, a daughter of BT Freeway 91F. Her mother, Blackcap Elbena V408, sold for $4,100 in our 1991 sale. • “TC Dr Zhivago” was an $80,000 Denver show bull we owned with some other breeders. His females were outstanding. • Connealy FF 156 was our choice of the Connealy Forefront sons at Connealy’s in Nebraska with the recommendation of Mr. Connealy. • Sells with a 3-22-10 bull calf at side sired by “MCATL Broadwalk”, an outstanding son of HSAF Bando 1961, a nearly perfect phenotype A.I. sire. Sells bred after 5-13-10 to SAV Peacemaker 5076, a bull with a lot of frame, length of body and has a high Milk EPD. Vet predicted most of these cows to calve around the first of March 2011.
