Their select herd of 60 cows is dedicated to raising champions. additionally, they utilize a pool of 700 head of recips from Willow springs ranch, which is owned by eric’s parents, larry & Beann Walker. Their operation also includes nearly 100 acres of row crops managed by the family to supplement the nutrition of their herd in the winter.

2015, Mark This Year as a Year of Out Reach & Development
American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) Mission Statement The AMAA will promote Maine-Anjou genetics that provide superior, value added performance, docility and carcass excellence for the beef industry while also providing expanded membership services for adult and junior members. If I were a Maine-Anjou breeder and could foresee in my crystal ball the future of this breed, I would be ecstatic with anticipation of what is to come. As an association we continually try to provide pathways for breeders to use, with the full intent of improving the Maine-Anjou product that is being marketed, whether that is to breeding operations or in the commercial setting.
Development
The Commercial Connection program will be one of growth and undeniable success for those that use its inherent guidelines to better their breeding programs. Initially off to a slow start, many of our leading programs have now made the commitment to participate and help forge a new line of thinking in breeding decisions, marketing avenues/promotion and their own breeding piece purchases. I highly suggest you watch for the Commercial Connection logo (three different tiers) on all participating breeder promotion pieces. This coalition of like minded breeders will set a course for breed expansion, mark it down! Genetically enhanced EPDs will become a reality in the Maine-Anjou breed in 2015. The result will be higher EPD accuracies and the true realization that you will be able to, with one simple test, shave years off of what would normally take years of weights and proper contemporary grouping to establish reliable accuracies. This one tool, when utilized to its full degree by Maine-Anjou breeders can provide a solid

and positive boost of creditability to Maine-Anjou data and the rest of the beef industry, mark it down! DigitalBeef, LLC, data systems will become the new system adopted by the AMAA. Transformation to the new system is set to begin in June with a completion date of Oct. 1, 2015. Allowing for the curve to work short term problems out, you, the Maine-Anjou user will be very satisfied with the immense capabilities this system offers your program! Like it has been mentioned in our meetings leading up to the adoption of this program, it can be as simple (register and transfer) or as in-depth as you want. This system is a completely web-based and can be used as a whole herd management system! Besides the advantages it offers the Maine-Anjou breeder, the AMAA sees an eventual shift to more online registrations allowing for timely response to meet your needs and less system administration time needed by the AMAA staff to meet the daily demands. Long overdue and much needed - you will be impressed! Mark it down! Year end association statistics are as good as any in the last 25 years! Stop and think about that statement for a little bit. The entire adult and junior membership should be very excited with the dawning of new and fresh ideas that will build upon the firm foundation this association is built on. Obituary
Phil Core
Phillip Lloyd Core, son of Lloyd Ellsworth and Dolores Mae (Loynachan) Core was born on March 17th,
1958 in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Phil attended Pleasantville Schools, graduating in 1976. While in school, he excelled in academics, sports, and FFA. He was named FFA Iowa Star Farmer in 1976 and was an Iowa State FFA Officer. He held the high-jump record at Pleasantville Schools for several years - those who met him later in life had a hard time believing this. Phil graduated with a B.S. in Animal Science from Iowa State University in 1980. While at Iowa State he was on the Livestock Judging Team. He loved analyzing livestock and placed 2nd in the National Collegiate Livestock Judging Contest. He was a proud member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity and had lifetime friends through this organization. An avid Iowa State fan, Phil enjoyed cheering on the Cyclones, especially Cyclone basketball games. On August 30th, 1980, he married Ann Elizabeth Lang from Brooklyn, Iowa. They have two daughters, Lindsey Ann and Morgan Leigh. The family spent many hours working with their cattle, and together with his brother Mark and sister-in-law Deb built a nationally competitive Maine-Anjou operation, being awarded Premier Breeder from the American MaineAnjou Association in 1997. Summer vacations were spent showing cattle at National Junior Shows around the country. Phil was a long time advisor for the Iowa
and support new leadership as that person gains your trust and friendship. Besides the opening in 2015 of the executive vice-president position, two other positions will be open. Rhonda Boddicker will be leaving her position at the AMAA office July 1, 2015 and Dave Steen, Commercial Development Director, will be leaving his post on Dec. 1, 2015. Watch the next issue of the Voice for a closer insight into these two very dedicated AMAA employees.
Junior Maine-Anjou Association and also served on the Iowa and American Maine-Anjou Boards for many years. Phil remained active in the Pleasantville community throughout his life, serving as President of the School Board and on the Pleasantville FFA Alumni Association. He was a member of Pleasantville Disciples of Christ Church. Phil was a founding member of the Three Trees Club- a close-knit group of friends who grew up showing at the Marion County Fair and then years later watched all of their kids do the same. This group’s love of the fair and its’ competitive youth livestock shows resulted in the sponsorship of the traveling trophies for Grand Champion Market Steer, Market Lamb, and Market Swine at the Marion County Fair. Phil devoted his entire career to the livestock industry in various roles over the years including the Iowa Pork Producers Association, the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, and McVean Trading. He was a cattle buyer for Monfort, JBS, and most recently Iowa Premium Beef. Phil enjoyed the opportunity to visit with producers and loved the game of trading livestock. Family was very important to Phil. He loved attending his daughters’ games, livestock shows, plays, musicals, and contests over the years. He enjoyed teaching, coaching, encouraging, and especially spending the time to create memories with everyone. Phil passed away on Wednesday, February 4th, 2015 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident at the age of 56 years. Phil was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Ann; daughters, Lindsey (Stephen) Core-Linnebur of Flora, Indiana and Morgan Core of Austin, Minnesota; brother, Mark (Deb) of Pleasantville, IA; parents-inlaw, Jack and Marilyn Lang of Brooklyn; brother-inlaw Mark (Patty) Lang of Brooklyn; sisters-in-law Mary (Doug) Tatro of Rock Island, Illinois and Paula (Neal) Smith of Brooklyn; 6 nieces and 2 nephews, and many other family members and friends. 2015 National Western Bright Lights Maine-Anjou Sale To top last year’s beautiful weather during the National Western would have been a reach, but 2015’s topped the previous seven years and was welcomed by all. The attendance of interested buyers and onlookers was amazing, each day the attendance grew with many familiar faces and a number of new faces. We greatly appreciate the continued support of all of our buyers! Twenty two consignors from 11 states sold a total of 48 bulls and eight females, that included a donation lot from Griswold and Nuendorf Cattle, and five embryo lots. Thank you to Griswold and Nuendorf Cattle for their generous donation. On Thursday, January 15 each sale bull was evaluated by a panel of three judges that included Mark Mueller, Kansas, Fred DeRouchey, South Dakota and Case Gabel, Colorado. Thank you to these gentlemen for making the trip to Denver to evaluate our sale bulls. Your time and effort is very much appreciated! The 2014 spring born bulls that were offered for sale provided consistent WDA numbers ranging from 3.06 to 4.12 lbs./per day. The set was extremely lean ranging from 0.09 to a high of 0.37 in. One of the great strengths of the Maine-Anjou breed is that of red meat yield and as one would expect the consigned bulls ultrasounded a very high average REA measurement. Young April and May bulls weighing in the high 8’s and 9’s with REA measurements of over 12! March through January bulls weighing 1,000 plus to 1,350 lbs., with consistent REA’s in the 14’s all the way up to 17.4! An August 2013 bull topped the REA measurement category scanning a very high 20.7! It is no wonder why feedlots like it when Maine-Anjou genetics are present in the feeder cattle they have on inventory. To that very point, many in the seats at this highlighted annual National Western event are repeat bull buyers that have recognized the true value realized from Maine-Anjou progeny. The bottom line is an ever reoccurring theme; the Maine-Anjou breed continues to show the positive impact that this breed can create in the production cycle of the beef industry!

Congratulations and thank you to this year’s consignors for the great set of bulls and females that were brought to the Denver Bright Lights sale.
Bright Lights Maine-Anjou Bull and Female Sale As we see year after year, the Bright Lights sale saw a standing room only crowd of potential and anxious buyers. When the sale ended, 48 bulls averaged $6,427, 8 females averaged $3,513 and five embryo lots (21 embryos) averaged $979 per embryo. The demand for Maine-Anjou genetics was evident again this year as was shown by the outstanding averages. Thank You Mike! For the past nine years a friend of mine, Mike Holden, has served as an AMAA Board of Director. For six years he has traveled with me many times. He has assisted us in Denver for the past eight of the nine years, only missing one year due to his mother’s passing. Mike has traveled many miles on distant trips with me to put on the Maine-Anjou Town Hall meetings and is always very willing to help with anything. Mike has always supported the Maine-Anjou breed by consigning cattle to our National Feed Trials, the Iowa Cattlemen’s Carcass Feedout Contest and the Iowa Beef Expo. He has become a great spokesman for the Maine-Anjou breed. I cannot thank Mike enough for his great friendship and willingness to help. The times were enjoyable. ach year at the National Western Stock Show, the seats are filled and a standing room only crowd awaits the Bright Lights Maine-Anjou sale. The bulls and females brought to this sale compliment almost every buyer’s needs, ranging from the Maine-Anjou herd sire to bulls that will run the range in a commercial setting. Consistency of product is what brings back the buyers year in and year out. Thanks to Case Gabel, Mark Mueller and Fred DeRouchey for setting the stage with the evaluation process of both bull and female lots. If one took the time to evaluate the EPD profiles offered along with the ultrasound data, one could only be impressed with the 2015 offering. Curve bending numbers were offered for those that took the time to evaluate. New to this year’s sale was the introduction of the Commercial Connection program and the logo’s of participating breeders. The program is designed to recognize those programs that truly integrate meaningful data into their breeding programs in order to supply the commercial industry with a dependable Maine-Anjou product. Breeders carrying that logo enjoyed much success in the 2015 event. The 2015 Bright Lights sale set an all-time high average with 48 bulls selling for an average of $6,427. To put this in industry perspective the offering consists of 10 to 12 month old bulls, not 18 to 24 months of age. That in itself makes a positive statement for the demand of top-line Maine-Anjou genetics.

that are sold at market are usually purchased as replacements that go into other herds. The Steele operation is a true family endeavor. The history of their family operation, over five generations, has been working together in the pursuant of developing better beef. The Steele’s made their first trip to the Denver National Western in 1982 and continue to make it an annual tradition. On January 16th, they celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary.
Commercial Producer of the Year Mark & Faye Steele, Kansas A finely tuned, well managed diversified crop and commercial cattle partnership nestled in the rolling hills of northern Kansas, the Commercial Producer of the Year award goes to Mark and Faye Steele and their son, Chance and his wife Jessica. This couple, along with their son and daughter-in-law, have developed a strong partnership through the love for family and the cattle business. The Steele’s purchased their first Maine-Anjou cattle from the McGillivary dispersal in Canada in 1995, purchasing a bull, a cow and a show heifer. From this humble beginning 20 years ago, their herd now consists of 250 head of outstanding black commercial cows that are selected for optimum maternal values and high fertility. Their genetic strategy has been to cross MaineAnjou bulls on their black based cowherd to maximize the available heterosis for increased weaning weights, added maternal values and overall performance. Because of their direct selection pressure for added performance, the Steele’s have created a reputation of raising extremely fast growing, heavy muscled calves with great dispositions that are highly sought after on sale day. This operation feels the benefits of the Maine-Anjou breed is their rate of gain potential, outstanding carcass qualities, calving ease and great disposition. Their Maine-Anjou influenced calves have topped the market at the Manhattan Commission Company for many years. The majority of their heifer crop becomes replacements, either in their own herd or those 20 March/April 2015
Seedstock Producer of the Year Redgate Cattle Company, Oklahoma A family ranching and farming operation located in the south central part of the country, Max Redgate’s career began 45 years ago when he was in high school, purchasing his first group of commercial cows. In 1970, Max married his lovely wife, Debra. The two expanded their cowherd and began a calf preconditioning operation, along with farming. Today the Redgate operation consists of 5,000 acres of native grass, 1,200 acres of improved grass and 1,200 acres of wheat and alfalfa. In the 1980’s their oldest daughter, Chancey, expressed an interest in showing cattle. This started their artificial insemination (AI) program and they purchased their first Maine-Anjou bull, Reflector, from the DeJong herd in South Dakota. Reflector’s first calf crop sold Max on the Maine-Anjou breed, which led him to begin utilizing ET technology to produce as many Reflector daughters and granddaughters as he could.
by Dave Steen, Commercial Development Director The Redgate operation presently runs 600 registered Maine-Anjou cows that are selected for docility, functionality, good uddered easy keeping females, that will produce high quality, moderate birth weight calves that have added performance and eye appeal. Redgate’s cowherd is totally enrolled in the MAPP program, that involves total herd reporting and supplies his herd with complete EPD profiles. This operation takes pride in their cowherd as it is made up of several Cornerstone dams. They are also proud of the fact that their entire cowherd is TH and PHA free! Last summer I had the opportunity to ride through their cowherd. Every question I asked was answered and assisted by two large ring notebooks laying on the dash. Their records are meticulous! As is the love for their cattle, Redgate feels the years of genetic selection have provided his females with the maternal strength to work in any environment. Today they AI about 500 cows per year. They offer and sell high quality replacement heifers, herd sires and show prospects through their successful internet sales that have helped to bring customers to them. The Redgate operation is blessed to have three daughters, all married and all working in some facet of agriculture, with one daughter and son-in-law that have played a huge role in the continued success of Redgate Cattle Co., the past eight years. Max’s goal has always been to raise cattle that will compete in the showring and perform in the cowherd and feedlot. Due to the success of their breeding program, the Maine-Anjou breed has helped their operation accomplish their goals and provided them with the opportunity to have a truly successful family business. “To me, knowing that someone is interested in carrying on our operation means everything. We all need to continue encouraging our younger generations. I’m grateful for the opportunity to watch my grandchildren grow up on the same ranch where I raised my daughters” said Redgate.
Friend of the Maine-Anjou Bob Weaber, Kansas Bob Weaber grew up on a cow-calf operation in southern Colorado. Weaber went on to earn a degree in Animal Science followed by his master’s degree in the Beef Industry Leadership Program at Colorado State University. He then completed his doctoral studies in the Animal Breeding and Genetics Group at Cornell University. Weaber has served as the Interim of Performance Programs at the American Simmental for three and a half years and Director of Education and research at the American Gelbvieh Association. In August of 2011, he joined Kansas State University as a Cow/Calf Extension Specialist and is the faculty coordinator of K-State’s purebred unit. Weaber serves as the central regional secretary of the Beef Improvement Federation and is also a cocoordinator of the National Beef Cattle Evaluation Consortium’s education programs. We lucky to be able to work with a gentleman of his distinction and knowledge concerning our MaineAnjou association’s sire summary, EPD profiles, our new upcoming 50K DNA enhanced EPDs, carcass EPD profiles and any other issues concerning the Maine-Anjou breed. This is a gentleman that is always accessible, always friendly, gives of his time and talents freely and is a wonderful person to work with.

Maine-Anjou Promoter of the Year John Boddicker, Missouri John Boddicker has accomplished many things throughout his life. He has been a herd manager, has farmed, fed and showed cattle, calved cows, farrowed hogs, showed hogs, has been a teacher, received a master’s degree, played and later coached baseball at a university that won a national championship, been
... continued involved in and on numerous cattle boards and the list goes on. Success is no stranger to John. Boddicker has always been one for clearly thinking things through, not jumping into rapid conclusions and always working through any problems that are thrown his way. There have been times when his job requires that he be at a number of places at the same time and he always gets it worked out. Boddicker has served on many beef and livestock organization’s boards, as well as actively serving his church community. He’s always ready to step-upto-the-plate if anyone needs any kind of help and is always there to offer support. John has always been a great spokesman for our breed, always given a positive perspective from his thoughts and has always been a great executive vice president. Boddicker has accomplished a feat unequalled by anyone else throughout the history of all cattle breeds, he is the longest standing executive vice president for 25 years. Congratulations John Boddicker on a job well done!
Obituary Richard ‘Rick’ Gary Jackson, the son of Gary and Karen (Johnson) Jackson, was born March 24, 1960 in Spencer, Iowa. His childhood years were spent on a farm near Dickens. He attended Lake Center School during his kindergarten year and then attended Rick Jackson Spencer schools, graduating from Spencer High School in 1978. During his high school years, he was active in 4-H and FFA. Most notably during high school, he was known for his talent on the baseball field, where he was a very successful pitcher. After his schooling he began his career in farming. Rick was an AVID Nebraska Husker fan, a pillar in the cattle industry. The loves of his life were cattle, farming, his family and his dog, Jax. Rick had a nickname for 22 March/April 2015
everyone and no one was a stranger to him. He married Kaylene Krieger on Dec. 31, 2010 in Terril and they had lived in the Terril community for the last 14 years. Rick passed away at his home on Friday, Feb. 6, 2015 at the age of 54 following a long bout with cancer. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents: James & Meta Jackson; his maternal grandparents: Carl & Madeline Johnson and a son, Cody Lee Jackson. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Kaylene of Terril; his three daughters: Tess and her husband, Clayton Eggers of Graettinger, IA, Hallee Jackson and Jordan Salton of Terril and Bailey and her husband, Matt Sievers of Newell, IA; one stepson, Dalton Perrin of Terril; his parents: Gary & Karen Jackson of Dickens, IA; two sisters: Sherri and her husband, Pat O’Brien of Clarion, IA and Jill and her husband, Terry Marquardt of Hooper, NE; his nephew and nieces: Ian & Amanda O’Brien, Molli & Tyler Leiting, Paige & Jenna Johnson and Justin Marquardt; other relatives and many, many friends.

Go to maine-anjou.org and click on the green login tab to the left of the screen. Click on “Create Account.” Here are the steps: 1. Type in your breeder number. 2. You will be prompted to enter a valid e-mail address. 3. Enter a password of your choice. Passwords are case sensitive. This information will be updated to your account and you may login with your breeder number and password from that point on. Once your online account is set up you will be able to register, transfer registrations, view inventory, complete your MAPP enrollment or enter performance data. Note: Online registrations are not automatically registered. They’re completed in the order that they’re received.

RegistRations foR upcoming shows
It is now time to register show animals for winter and spring shows. Please keep in mind during the winter show season you will need to allow at least two to three weeks for turn-around on registrations and transfers sent in to our office. If a paper is needed within that time, a rush fee ($50 per eight head) will be required before the work will be completed.
Rush oRDeRs
If you are selling an animal, we ask that you register and transfer the animal in a timely manner to avoid extra charges and to assure buyers they are purchasing from a reputable business person. Rushes will be done in the order received; a rush fee is currently $50 (covers eight head). If rush work is faxed, it will be considered a rush unless otherwise specified. It is the breeder’s responsibility to give us a follow-up phone call to make sure the work is legible and to cover all fees. It is not our office staff ’s responsibility to call breeders that fax in registration work. No work will be released until payment is complete. Rush work is processed ahead of the regular work that is received in our office and mailed by regular mail within one to two business days. We will do our best to complete rush work that is received in our office by 2 p.m. (Monday – Friday). There is no sameday turnaround. If requiring a registration number only, it will still be considered a rush as we still have to process the work to obtain the number. If you need to have registrations sent out by overnight delivery, there is an additional fee (in addition to the rush fee) for sending overnight. We normally use Federal Express (Fed Ex) and the charges are based on Fed Ex fees at that given time. Again, let us emphasize, it is your responsibility to contact our office to make arrangements for overnight delivery so that we have the correct shipping address and payment before sending. Fed Ex WILL NOT deliver to a post office box. A rush will be picked up by Fed Ex the next business day for delivery the following day. For big weekend events, such as state expos, we reserve the right to require work to be in our office no later than 2 p.m. on the Wednesday prior to that weekend’s show.
Please plan ahead. If a paper is needed within two weeks, a rush will be required at this time of year. Thank you.

All AMAA members who are enrolled in the MAPP program and who wish to receive EPDs on animals within your herd, please enroll electronically and pay for any active Maine-Anjou dams. Please cancel any animals you no longer have in your herd as you are enrolling. If you are unable to electronically submit your MAPP inventory, please contact our office to request paper copies of your inventory as soon as possible. If you have more than one account within the family you will need to login to each account to submit each inventory. If you no longer wish to remain in MAPP, you must contact our office or submit in writing that you wish to be removed from the program. A $50 reactivation fee will be applied to re-enter MAPP once you have been removed from the program. Any MAPP participants that do not submit inventories by the December 31 deadline will be billed for all active dams and dues in January 2015. If you are unsure as to what program you are in, log in to your online account and look for “Membership Type”. If it does not say MAPP, then you are not in this program and will not be required to submit any information. To log in to your online account, go to maine-anjou. org, click on “login” (green tab), enter breeder number and password. To set up password go to “create account” first. Click on MAPP inventory at the top of the page once logged in. MAKE SURE TO CLICK ON SUBMIT once you’re ready to electronically send to the AMAA. You should be able to go to a payment screen if submitted correctly. Please make sure to finish the transaction to completely submit your inventory.

REGISTRATION NUMBERS
Once an animal is registered, it is backed up that same night to our Web site, maine-anjou.org. It can be viewed by clicking on “Search the Maine-Anjou Breed” or by logging into your account.
dNA, Th ANd phA REQUIREMENTS
Prior to registering any ET calves, all donor dams (including commercial or non-registered dams) must have DNA, TH and PHA on file in our office. Also, all AI sires are required to have the same on file. Therefore, our office will hold any ET registrations submitted out of dams without testing on file as well as all registrations out of AI sires that do not have complete testing on file. If the donor dam is deceased and not tested, we do require that the ET(s) have the tests done, in the absence of the donor’s records. The DNA, TH and PHA testing can be done at GeneSeek. A submission form is found on our Web site, maine-anjou.org. Maine-Anjou samples are put into testing at GeneSeek on Wednesdays, please plan accordingly when submitting. DNA results will be back in the AMAA office late the next week after the testing begins; TH and PHA results will be in our office two weeks later, usually on a Thursday. We would like to start sending the test results by e-mail only, please make sure we have an up-to-date e-mail address for you, if applicable.

NEw MEMBERS
All new members must choose a program when submitting a new membership. The two programs that are offered are MAPP and Breeders Choice. You may read about these two programs by visiting maineanjou.org and clicking on “Member Information” and then choose the “MAPP or Breeders Choice” option. If a membership is submitted without choosing a program, the new member will be placed in the Breeders Choice program.

Non-registered bulls and females must be entered as a foundation animal prior to MaineTainer progeny being registered. All current “P” (performance only) cattle will be grand-fathered into the program. If the sire is an AI sire and registered at another breed association, the pedigree and testing must be on file with the AMAA. The charge to add a sire pedigree will be a one-time charge of $40. If the AMAA finds that the pedigree has already been paid for by another breeder, the $40 charge will not be applied. Dams registered at another breed association may also be added for a one-time charge of $25. See the new selfbilling sheet for foundation fees.
BUll cAlf REGISTRATION
If registering a bull calf born after Jan. 1, 2014, it must be TH/PHA free by parentage or have testing completed prior to registering and on file with the AMAA. Carriers will no longer be registered, but may be entered as a foundation animal. If registrations are submitted before testing has been completed, the animal will not be registered. Instead, the animal will be given a performance number at a non-refundable penalty charge of $10. Once the animal has been tested the registration may be completed at the regular rate. Please plan accordingly as testing can take up to three weeks.
ONlINE TRANSfERS
Registered animals with certificates are now able to be transferred online but must be completed by the current owner by logging into his/her online account to complete the transfer. If the buyer is responsible for the transfer fees, the seller must indicate this in the comment line, otherwise the seller will be charged the transfer fees. Remember, anytime you transfer an animal your dues must be paid unless the animal being transferred is the last animal in your inventory. You will be able to see your current inventory when logging in to your account online.
ONlINE REGISTRATION dIScOUNTS
A 10 percent discount on registration fees will be given to all active members registering online (discount does not apply to annual dues, new memberships, MAPP fees or foundation animals). If you have not created an online account, you may do so by visiting maine-anjou.org, select the green tab that says “Login”, select “Create Account”, enter your current breeder number, enter your e-mail address,
verify your e-mail address and enter a password of your choice. You will then be automatically logged in to your account. You may view your current inventory, cancelled animals you no longer have, register and transfer animals and enroll your MAPP online if you are a current MAPP member.
Purchase registration blocks
You may purchase registration blocks of 15, 25, 50, 75 and 100 at a discounted rate. These blocks are prepaid registrations and may only be used for animals under 13 months of age. Any unused blocks expire December 31 of each year. See the new selfbilling worksheet for pricing. Multiple discounts will not be allowed. If you register online, the block discount (the greater discount) will be applied at checkout.

How much can I afford to Pay for a bull?

A popular question this time of year is “How much can I afford to pay for a bull.” My go-to answer is usually… “How much revenue loss would you have from a pasture full of open cows?” After all, we often devalue the role of the bull. We forget that he is a crucial part of the equation to making our product. Now, the question is a good one to ask. Especially after watching calf prices climb seemingly all of 2014 and the prices paid for bred heifers at year-end, it is only logical to wonder what a good bull will cost this spring. Old rules of thumb are good to reflect on. For instance, “2 times the value of a fat steer” or “4 to 5 times the value of a feeder calf ” are both common measures used by old timers to determine the value of a bull. So, I tested these figures with historical prices from the Illinois Performance Tested Bull Sale and prices paid for feeders and fats from National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). As it turns out, using values from 1996 to 2014 (last 19 years) the average bull price was 4 times the value of a feeder calf and 2.1 times the value of a fat steer. Looks like those old 38 March/April 2015
rules of thumb work pretty well. Using these multipliers, we can speculate to the average price of bulls this coming sale season. Looking at recent market reports, 500 lb. feeder calves are bringing $2.40 or more. Thus, value of a 5-weight feeder calf is conservatively $1,200. History tells us 4 times that value will get us close to the average. Thus 4 x $1,200 = $4,800 for an average bull price. A conservative price for fat steers weighing 1300 lb. is $1.60. Therefore the math tells us a fat steer values out at nearly $2,100. The previously stated multiplier of 2.1 times the value of a fat steer would yield an average bull price of just over $4,400. So, we have a conservative range of $4,400 to $4,800 for the average bull price. That said, there will be many bulls that bring in excess of those figures. So, what factors contribute to bulls bringing more than the average? Are they worth the extra money? For simplicity, let’s say a bull breeds 25 cows per year for 4 years resulting in 100 calves over his lifespan. With these conservative assumptions, even a
small improvement in a valuable trait can greatly increase a bull’s value. For instance, Calving Ease (CE) EPD is defined as the difference in percentage of unassisted births. So, let’s say you purchase a bull that is 5 points better in his CE than the breed average for current sires. For both Angus and Simmental that would mean purchasing a bull in the top 10 % of the breed for that trait… not an unrealistic buy. The 5 point improvement should translate to 5% more unassisted births. In the real world, it’s fair to say half of assisted births don’t make it. Thus, a 5% improvement in CED could easily translate to 2.5% more calves. Out of 100 calves sired over a lifetime, that’s 2.5 more calves. The added value from improved CE would be $3,000 (2.5 more calves x 500 lbs x $2.40/lb.). The most common example for added value of a bull is improved EPDs for weaning weight (WW). Let’s say you purchase a bull with a WW EPD of 60 (breed average for Angus is 50). That’s 10 additional pounds at weaning per calf. If the bull sires 100 calves in a lifetime and a pound is worth $2.40, then the result is $2,400 more income over his lifetime when compared to the average of current sires.
Another figure bull buyers can look at are $ values (Weaned Calf Value ($W), Beef Value ($B), AllPurpose Indexes (API), Terminal Index (TI). These values are expressed in dollars and if you match your herd needs with the correct index, they can help you be more profitable. Understanding and Utilizing Economic Indexes in Sire Selection is a good resource for learning more about the role $ values play in selection. When selecting your next herd sire, identify the traits that can add dollars to your operation. Don’t sacrifice functionality, structural soundness, docility, and other traits that can affect longevity. View purchasing a bull as an investment and treat it as such. Investing in a good bull that can improve profitable traits in your herd can allow your farm to be more competitive no matter the market dynamic. Bottomline, bulls are a significant contributor to profit or loss in your cattle herd. The have an impact now and for years to come if you are retaining replacement females. Look for traits that hold value in your market. Find a bull that can inject those traits. The “expense” of a bull can be a great investment in the future of your cattle herd. March/April 2015 39

Mike Holden
Mike Holden finished up his second term of serving on the AMAA Board of Directors at the 2015 National Maine-Anjou Show. Mike was very active as the chairman of the promotion/marketing committee, forever championing the need for a wider base of breed promotion and continual marketing efforts of our breed, particularly in the commercial sector. With those two items in mind, Mike has been a strong voice in the long range committee, which worked very hard to put together the breeds current long range plan. Mike has most recently served on the executive committee as the first vice-president. Mike is a true believer in what this breed has to offer the entire industry. The AMAA would like to thank Mike for his time and effort to help our association grow and prosper.

One of the joys of being executive vice president is the chance to work side by side with the association’s president. It can be a long tenure for both if the two individuals don’t have some understanding of each other. For those of you that may think Jirl and I agree on all fronts, you would be mistaken. Having said that, we always have been able to talk things through. In the end we came to an agreement that was in the best interest of the association, both short and long term. One only needs to look at Jirl’s operation and realize the dedication he has for the junior program. His investment in our AMAA junior program goes far beyond monetary donations, his dedication is geared toward the future of our young people with the goal in mind that they become established young adults that can help make both our industry and that of society a better place. The AMAA would like to thank Jirl for his leadership and continued support of all association activities. March/April 2015 49

AMAA Meeting Minutes - Saturday, Jan. 31, 2015 - Fort Worth, Texas Meeting was called to order at 4:25 p.m. by president, Jirl Buck.

Buildings/Grounds John Boddicker updated the board regarding annual building costs of approximately $5,500. The 2016 budget will need to include a resealing of the AMAA parking lot. An unofficial appraisal of the building site was presented at $182,500. No motions brought before the board.

The regular AMAA board meeting was resumed at 5 p.m. Motion was made and seconded to accept the AMAA board resignation of Mike O’Hara and to replace the position with his son Hardy O’Hara for the remainder of his term. Motion carried. Committee Reports Foundation Carol Willoughby updated the board on Reaching Beyond activities along with what is planned for the remainder of 2015. Plans will be made for a summer 50 March/April 2015
Breed Improvement Motion was made and seconded to have both staff and AMAA board of directors sign confidentiality statements. The AMAA confidentiality statements meet legal guidelines with regard to AMAA business. Motion carried. Motion was made and seconded to have non-AMAA board members that are part of the executive vice president search committee to sign confidentiality statements as well. Motion carried. Motion was made and seconded to accept proposal from DigitalBeef, LLC, to be the new data system provider for the AMAA. Contract work will be scheduled to begin June 1, 2015 and be up and running Oct. 1, 2015. Motion carried Finance Motion was made and seconded to accept the 2014 year end financial report. Motion carried. Motion was made and seconded to accept the 2015 budget proposal. Motion carried. Long Range Motion was made and seconded to have John Boddicker discuss with judges of our four national show sites and National Junior Show judges the need to acknowledge performance data during class reasons. Motion failed. Upon further discussion, John Boddicker was instructed to carry on with present structure that is
making sure the judge is aware that spectators have the same data in hand and to use that data how he/she sees fit. Discussion was presented on the grading of where the association stands on meeting the goals and objectives of the AMAA long range plan. No motion brought before the board on this issue. Magazine Motion was made and seconded to accept the 2015 Voice budget as presented. Motion carried. Promotion/Marketing Update was given in committee regarding steer/ heifer feeding trials and the Commercial Connection program. No motions brought before the board. Show Motion was made and seconded to change the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) yard heifer show from a pen show to an un-haltered individual heifer show. The show format is to resemble the pen show. All heifers entered in the show must sell and all heifers entered in the sale must show. There will be both a Maine-Anjou and MaineTainer division. Motion carried The judge selection process was held for the 2015/2016 show season. The following list was selected (please keep in mind due to non-acceptance judge names for a particular show can change). Moved and seconded to accept the annual financial report as presented. Motion carried. John Boddicker gave a brief review of AMAA activities in 2014. Highlighted in the presentation was that of the 50K project to become a reality with genetically enhanced EPDs to be implemented during the 2015 calendar year. A short introduction was made regarding DigitalBeef, LLC. A proposal will be made at AMAA board of directors meeting to contract with DigitalBeef, LLC., to be the new provider of AMAA data. The membership was again encouraged to become involved in the Commercial Connection program, by doing so helping the breed diversify itself better into the commercial industry. Cody Tebbenkamp gave a brief update regarding the executive vice-president search. Carol Willoughby gave an update and presented a video with regard to the Reaching Beyond campaign. Retiring AMAA board members Jirl Buck and Mike Holden were properly recognized for their years of service and dedication in a place of leadership as members of the AMAA board of directors. Maine Man of the Year award was presented to Fred DeRouchey, Mitchell, S.D. National Breeder of the Year award was presented to Jones Show Cattle, Harrod, Ohio. he prestigious induction into the American Maine-Anjou Heritage Road was a highly anticipated event at the annual membership meeting. The name itself, Heritage Road, gives a feeling of grandeur that emulates each of these very deserving program inductees! Each program, 4J Family Partnership, NorTex Farms and Flying Dutchman Ranch, has carved their rightful place in the American Maine-Anjou Association’s (AMAA) place of history. The AMAA presented each program inductee with a portrait, another identical portrait will hang in the halls of Heritage Road here at the AMAA. The AMAA is proud to recognize each of these elite programs for their contributions of breeding excellence to the Maine-Anjou breed.

How Do You Sell Bulls? by Ed Creason
How many bulls do you sell a year? What sets you apart from everyone else selling bulls? We sometimes forget the amount of bulls that are sold every year that we need to set ourselves apart from the other producers selling bulls. Let’s take a moment to think about the experiences that we like to have when we purchase something. What do you like to happen when you buy a tractor, car, electronics, etc.? What about going out to eat at a restaurant? Do you have high expectations for the people that are helping or serving you? Do you hold yourself accountable for those same expectations? I think that these are all things that we need to think about and try to do a better job of holding ourselves accountable for. The better job you do serving your customers the better your business will be! All of us are going to sell sound, functional bulls that have had a breeding soundness exam, will have excellent semen quality and be ready to go to work for the new owners. Let’s take a look at what can or does set you apart from everyone else.

Free Delivery
Many producers offer free delivery or arranged delivery for a guaranteed rate to buyers. This is a great service for buyers and sellers. If the seller delivers the bull to the buyer it gives the seller a chance to have a one-on-one conversation and get to know their customer better and learn more about their operation. This can give you insight into what the best type of service for that buyer is or even the bulls that fit the buyers operation best.
Guarantee
Most sellers offer a guarantee of one kind or another. Whether it be a first season breeding guarantee or a six month guarantee. There are other guarantees, but these would be some of the most common.
Insurance and Yardage
Some producers offer free yardage and/or yardage at a good rate for a certain period of time to help out buyers. Some buyers don’t have a place to keep their bulls until they get ready to turn them out with the cows or heifers. This service offers them another
option and they can get the bull and turn him out. Producers usually have a person available for buyers to purchase insurance through but some producers are starting to insure bulls for a short period of time so that the buyer and seller both feel more at ease if it takes a few days for the bull to make it from the seller's to the buyers place.
Follow Up
Following up with buyers can be critical when selling bulls. We all get busy and sometimes don’t spend as much time following up with buyers the way we should. I know that the adage “no news is good news” is often used. Most of the time this is the case, but sometimes someone has trouble and spreads the word about their trouble before they let you know. Being proactive as a seller can help prevent some of this from happening, you won’t be able to prevent all of it. Being proactive and taking care of problems when they happen and not letting them snowball will help your business grow and let your business thrive through the years. In the world we live in now there are several ways to follow up. It could be through a phone call, text, e-mail, Facebook, etc. Know your customer and which way is the best way to contact them.
Customer Service
There are many customer service strategies that can be used. Taking care of your customers and their needs can go a long way and help your business grow through the years. Having a field day and/or a customer appreciation day can help with customer retention. Giving the customer a hat, gloves, sorting
stick, etc., when they buy a bull from you makes them feel like they are getting something back for their purchase. Everyone likes to receive something, even sending a Christmas card, birthday card or anniversary card to your customers can let them know that you care and want to keep them as your customer. Any extra service you can provide to set yourself apart will help.
Customer Retention
Customer retention falls under many of the other categories but is something that needs to be addressed. Once you attain a customer you need to do as much as you can to keep them. Think of all of the advertising and promotion dollars you spend. What does it cost to attain a customer for your operation? Once you get a customer it is easier and more economical to keep them as your customer then try to attain a new one to replace the customer you lose. We all know we are going to lose customers over the years, but if we can make these losses minimal it will help with the bottom line and put more money in your pocket. There are many things that you can do to set yourself apart from other producers, take care of your customers and retain your customers well into the future. Anything you can do that is extra will help you retain your customers and grow your business. Be creative, have fun and have a successful spring selling season and future!
