Mares with More

Easter Cody and a Tribute to C. T. Fuller by Larry Thornton

C. T. Fuller with one of his horses. Photo Courtesy Peter Fuller

Back in 1993 I had the opportunity to interview C. T. Fuller of Catasauqua, Pennsylvania. Fuller was the long time owner of the NRHA and AQHA Hall of Fame stallion Joe Cody a legend in the reining horse industry. Fuller an entrepreneur and horseman was a great asset to the American Quarter Horse and the modern reining horse. Here are some of the things he was involved in the horse industry. Fuller was the original publisher of the PRACTICAL HORSMAN and PERFORMANCE HORSEMAN magazines. As a photographer his photos were used in his advertising and he was often a featured photographer on the cover of THE AMERICAN QUARTER HORSE JOURNAL. His movie “The Horse America Made” for the American Quarter Horse Association is a great film that documents the history and performance of the quarter horse. His horse breeding interests were focused on the reining horse but he was a successful breeder of thoroughbreds and quarter running horses. He owned and stood Mr Meyers the good son of Page 14

THE WORKING HORSE • FALL 2011

World Champion Go Man Go who was out of the World Champion Miss Meyers by Leo. He was a thoroughbred Eclipse Award winner as the breeder and owner of Ambassador of Luck. It was through these contributions to the quarter horse that allowed him to join Joe Cody in the AQHA Hall of Fame and the NRHA Hall of Fame. The recent passing of this legendary man brought back his memory and the memory of a mare with more that helped start it all. Although a horseman in his childhood, C. T. Fuller got into the quarter horse business through his daughter Holly and her desire to have a horse on the family's Willow Brook Farms. Willow Brook had been the home of horses but when Fuller’s father died, the horses were sold mostly because of the mechanization of agriculture. So it was only natural that horses came back to Willow Brook when his daughter asked for them. Holly went on to be an American Horse Shows Association competitor in Stock Seat, Saddle Seat and Hunt Seat. Her success led to the hiring of a horseman by the name of Bob Anthony. Anthony was hired to be a groom and to take Holly to school. Fuller credits Anthony in steering them into quarter horses. He reportedly did it by taking Holly to an American Horse Show Association stock horse event. The first successful quarter horse for them was Sappho Cody. She became the 1963 AQHA Honor Roll Reining Horse. When Fuller bought Sappho Cody he also bought Easter Cody her full sister. Marion Harper Jr bred both of these mares and Fuller bought them

from Virginia Harper who lived in Maryland at the time. The success of Sappho Cody in the arena led to Easter Cody going to the arena and that is where our story will lead us. Here is what Fuller had to say about Easter Cody, “The first AQHA Champion and Honor Roll Horse was Sappho Cody. Then we went on and a full sister to Sappho Cody was a horse called Easter Cody. She turned into a great reining horse. She was the honor roll reining horse one year, cow horse the next year and then again in the cow horse the next year.” He continued, “It was sad that she died. We retired her and then brought her back to do an exhibition at the Congress. I think the bringing her back was too much for her. She kind’ve in her own mind had done all she could do and she was going to be a broodmare. But she died of Colitis X. She died before we could get any foals because she was an exceptionally good mare.” Fuller continued about his exceptional mare, “One year she was in contention for the reining horse title. We took her out of competition and flew her to California to make a movie for the American Horse Show Association on Stock Seat Equitation.” “Holly rode her in the film. She was used to demonstrate both the split rein and the California Romal Rein at Clyde Kennedy’s place,” added Fuller about the role of Easter Cody in the film. He continued, “Then we flew her back home. She entered competition to win the honor roll title. She was out of competition about three

weeks. She came back to amass more points then any other horse. She was an exceptional mare. She was exceptional because of her conformation. She had such a good mind. Always willing to do everything without a problem.” Easter Cody won her Honor Roll titles in 1965, 1966 and 1967 first for Reining and other two times as the high point Working Cow Horse. She added her AQHA Championship with 32 halter points in 1965 and she was Superior in Working Cow Horse and Reining when she earned 244.5 AQHA performance points. She was ROM in performance. The success of Sappho Cody and Easter Cody prompted Fuller to approach Virginia Harper about buying Joe Cody and she consented to sell the horse. So Joe Cody went to spend the rest of his life breeding top performance horses (especially reining horses) at Willow Brook Farms. Joe Cody wasn’t the only horse Fuller bought from Harper. Another one was a mare named Hapgood’s Sal. She was a 1948 dun mare that was bred by L. B. Hapgood of Henrietta, Texas.

Joe Cody foals followed her color pattern as either palomino, buckskin or bay but after that mare most of the Joe Cody’s were sorrel or chestnut.” A look at the pedigree of Hapgood’s Sal may tell us where her “dominance” came from. She was sired by Sappho Bertie, a 1936 stallion sired by Sappho that was bred by W. B. Mitchell’s Sons of Marfa, Texas. Mitchell and his family are foundation Palomino breeders in the Palomino Horse Breeder’s Association. A stallion used in the Mitchell Palomino breeding program was Sappho. Sappho was bred by Jap Bishop and foaled in 1913. He was bought as a yearling by W. B. Mitchell and became a foundation sire for him. The sire of Sappho was Brown King. Brown King was sired by Arch Oldham and he was sired by the thoroughbred *Gallentry. The dam of Sappho is reported in the book THE PALOMINO HORSE, by Doreen M. Norton, as a Palomino mare by “a brown Morgan” stallion.

The dam of Sappho’s Bertie was a daughter of Sappho. According to AQHA Internet When we see Records we see that the comments the dam of Hapgood’s made by Fuller we Sal was a daughter Holly and Easter Cody showing the style that won this great mare have to think that of Sappho’s Bertie. her titles and the team that started C. T. Fuller on the road to Hapgood’s Sal If this is true it gives success as a reining horse breeder. Photo Courtesy Peter Fuller must have been Hapgood’s Sal a something special. breeding pattern of 1 He explained it this way; “We didn’t really go out and find nicks X 2 to Sappho’s Bertie and a breeding pattern of 2 X 3 X 3 X 4 for Joe Cody. We just got nice mares and no matter what the to Sappho. mares were they seemed to cross with him. He would bring the best out of the mare.” The interesting part of the Sappho contribution to the modern quarter horse and Palomino came through his daughters. Here He continued, “The one mare that was dominant in the are two examples--Sappho is the broodmare sire of Sobre and beginning was Hapgood’s Sal. She was the dam of Sappho and Sappho Jr. They were both out of daughters of Sappho. Sobre Easter.” was out of Donna Sapphos VI by Sapphos. Sappho Jr was out of Nortanita by Sapphos. Nortanita was a registered quarter To show the dominance of this mare Fuller stated, “All of her horse. Continued on page 22... Page 18

Sobre was a successful show horse winning such honors as the Grand Champion Quarter Horse and Grand Champion Palomino Stallion at the Wyoming State Fair in the mid 1940’s. He was also the Palomino Grand Champion at the first show sponsored by the Texas Palomino Association. Sobre entered the performance arena as a reining horse. He was the Champion Reining Stallion at the West Texas Fair in Abilene in 1944 and first in the Palomino Reining Stallion class at the Wyoming All States Palomino Show in 1946. Sobre was the sire of several ROM sons and daughters including Sobre’s Sweetie, the 1953 AQHA Honor Roll Reining Horse. The Sobre sired Sobre’s Swing earned $2,335.12 in the NCHA. Sapphos Jr was the sire of the ROM performer Crescent City. Sappho Jr was also a senior sire on the Mitchell Ranch at Marfa, Texas. This gives us two reasons why Hapgood’s Sal was such a great producer. If she was inbred to Sappho that would make her more prepotent and the second reason she was inbred to a broodmare influence with the success of Sappho as a broodmare sire.

The success of Joe Cody and Hapgood’s Sal didn’t end with Easter Cody. The next foal from this cross was Sal Cody, another AQHA Champion. She earned 22 halter and 27 performance points. Sal Cody was the dam of Ebony Fox, an AQHA Champion, Hill Country Sal, Superior Western Pleasure and Benito Bar Maid, winner of an AQHA ROM in the open and amateur divisions. Ebony Fox is the dam of Fox Easter, winner of 22 AQHA halter points. Golden Sal Cody was a daughter of Joe Cody and Hapgood’s Sal. She was an ROM performer with 10.5 AQHA points. She was the dam of Liongold an AQHA Superior Western Pleasure Horse that was ROM in the open, amateur and youth divisions of the AQHA. This horse earned 256 AQHA points in these three divisions. Sapphire Cody was the next foal in this group. She was the 1971 AQHA High Point Reining Horse and an AQHA Superior reining horse. She earned 73 AQHA performance points. None of her foals became performers. The last foal of Hapgood’s Sal was Win Dancer by Joe Cody. This mare was a point earner in the AQHA with five points. She is the dam of the unshown mare Hired Hannie. She was the dam of two ROM performers in Coronas Doc Cody and Docs Bo Jo Cody.

Sappho Jr Photo Courtesy of Phil Livingston The success Fuller experienced with Sappho Cody and Easter Cody prompted Fuller to buy Joe Cody. He was a son of Bill Cody by Wimpy P-1. Bill Cody was the King ranch bred stallion that became the AQHA Honor Roll Halter Horse in 1952. He was the first horse to win this honor. The dam of Joe Cody was Taboo, a mare by King P-234. Taboo had been a race mare. She was out of Billie Bo, a mare bred by George Clegg. Billie Bo was foaled in 1934 and sired by Billy Bowlegs by D. J. by the great Cajun sire Old D. J. Her dam was a mare listed as the Phelps Mare. Billie Bo was a roping and bulldogging mare. Frank Holmes in his Joe Cody biography in LEGENDS 5 tells us that Doc Spence bought Billy Bo and he showed her on the rodeo circuit. It was Spence that hauled Billie Bo to the court of King P-234 to get Taboo, the dam of Joe Cody. Joe Cody was a successful show horse in his own right. He was an AQHA Champion with a performance ROM. He earned 10 halter points, 42 cutting points and 4 reining points. He was a three-year-old when he won the AQHA Championship. Joe Cody went on to be a very successful sire in the AQHA and the NRHA. He sired 81 ROM performers, 13 AQHA Champions, nine Honor Roll champions and five World Champions. The interesting part of the Honor Roll foals is the fact that Hapgood’s Sal produced three of them in Easter Cody, Sappho Cody and Sapphire Cody and they won five of the honor roll titles. The Joe Cody’s excelled in the NRHA by winning in excess of $130,000 during the organizations early years not to mention two NRHA Futurity Champions. His futurity champions were Cassandra Cody and Topsail Cody in 1979 and 1980 respectively. Fuller put the sire record into perspective when he noted that it was hard to get mare owners to breed to Joe Cody because

Joe Cody Photo Courtesy American Quarter Horse Journal he was east of the Mississippi. He confided “I would probably still be in the breeding business if they would have gotten more outside mares to Joe Cody.” So the pattern of success started by Hapgood’s Sal continued with several other mares that produced multiple top performers by Joe Cody. They include Paprika Nicha the dam of Workman’s Joe, 1966 Honor Roll Reining Stallion; Paprika Cody, 1968 AQHA High Point Reining Horse; Big Bob Cody, 1975 AQHA Reserve World Champion Senior Reining and Cody Nine, 1978 AQHA World Champion Junior Reining Horse. The NRHA Futurity Champion Cassandra Cody was out of Dudes Baby Doll by Blondy’s Dude. Cassandra Cody was a full sister to Corona Cody, a top California Reining Horse and successful sire and Guru Cody, an AQHA Superior Hunter Under Saddle performer. Corona Cody later replaced his sire at Willow Brook Farms. The blood of Joe Cody has come down through the generations to be one of the most important bloodlines in modern reining which is indicated by how many from this line are found on the million dollar sire list. When we look at this list of million dollar sires we see Topsail Cody, Topsail Whiz, Conquistador Whiz and West Coast Whiz. Then we see that Topsail Whiz is the only sire on this list whose foals have earned over $7,000,000 in the NRHA and we see he is the sire of West Coast Whiz and Conquistador Whiz. The NRHA has grown into a monumental organization with a following that has taken this great event all over the world making it one of the most popular horse events we have available to us. When we look back and see how important Joe Cody and C. T. Fuller were in the development of modern reining we also have to look at the role of Easter Cody in this contribution and acknowledge she was the spark that started it. It is this spark that makes her one of our Mares with More and our vehicle to pay our respects to the passing of a great horseman and gentleman in C. T. Fuller.

What is a breed?

A breed is a group of animals with common ancestors and common characteristics that breed true generation after generation. When we look at the pedigree of the 2010 AQHA Racing World Champion Apollitical Jess and the 2010 NCHA Futurity Champion One Time Royalty we see that they have common ancestors. They are quarter horses whose pedigrees are dominated by individuals who excel in producing either racehorses or cutting horses and despite their individual performance differences they still have common ancestors between them. Apollitical Jess is a 2007 son of Mr Jess Perry, the 2010-leading sire of money winners. The Mr Jess Perry foals earned $4,977,421 in 2010 and Apollitical Jess won $1,399,831 of it. On the way to his championships he set track records at Los Alamitos for 400 yards in the Los Alamitos Super Derby (G1) and a track record in the 440 yard Champion of Champions (G1). Apollitical Jess not only added the World Championship to his resume but he was the Racing Champion Three-Year-Old Page 32

Old Joe Bailey looks a little rough in this picture but he was a very important sire in the establishment of the quarter horse as a breed. One Time Royalty set a record when he scored a 230 in the finals of the 2010 NCHA Open Futurity to win the most prestigious event in modern day cutting. Stakes Open. One Time Royalty is about as royally bred as a cutting horse can be. He is a 2007 son of One Time Pepto an Open Superstakes Champion. One Time Pepto has sired the winners of both the NCHA Open and Non-Pro Futurity as well as the reserve champion of the NRCHA Open Snaffle Bit Futurity in 2010 his first year to have foals participating in aged events. His foals have put him over the $1,000,000 in earnings in the first year of competition and he accomplished that in July. Through Champion Apollitical Jess we see that such great horses as the racing influence of Three Bars, Leo and Top Deck as the foundation sires in his pedigree. When we move on to the pedigree of One Time Royalty we find that Three Bars, Leo and King P-234 are three modern day foundation sires in the pedigree of this cutting champion. This shows us that we have the common blood between the two with horses like Three Bars, who is found in a large majority of the quarter horse pedigrees we see today. Thus they are both members of the quarter horse breed through their common ancestors. But when we look at the tail female line of these two young stallions we have another interesting way that some common blood ties them together. We see that they have the King P-234/Old Joe Bailey blood in common through their tail female lines. The tail female line is that bottom line of the bracket pedigree. This line of descent is a most interesting facet of the pedigree. When we follow the tail female line we come to the Taproot Mare or the foundation mare in the tail female line. Thus the Taproot Mare is the founder of a family of horses that extend from this mare through the tail female line. In this case the taproot mares we will start with are the Joe Bailey bred mares Queen H and Sis Bailey B and how they were crossed with the blood of King P-234. Registration photo of Queen H. Photo Courtesy The AQHA Hall of Fame and Museum

But first let’s look at the stallions King P-234 and Old Joe Bailey. King P-234 was a mahogany bay stallion foaled in 1932. M. Benevides Volpe of Laredo, Texas was his breeder. King P-234 later passed through the hands of several horsemen until he came to be owned by Jess L. Hankins of Rocksprings, Texas. King was used early in his life as a racehorse. He reportedly had two races and won both of them. He then went to the roping pen where Win Dubose who is the man that sold King P-234 to Hankins used him. Dubose reportedly used King for a time as a roping horse even after he was sold to Hankins. Hankins showed King P-234 at some early quarter horse shows. He was the Grand Champion stallion at Abilene in 1941 and San Angelo in 1942. He was a noted stock horse that was named the Champion Stock Horse Stallion in Abilene and first in the daily reining and second in the finals at Fort Worth as well as second in the cutting at the same show. King retired to become a greater sire than he was as a show horse. He sired 84 ROM show horses, 24 AQHA Champions and 13 AQHA open Superior halter and performance horses. He sired many fine show horses including Poco Bueno, King’s Pistol, Royal King, Martha King, Continental King, L H Quarter Moon and Gay Widow. This brings us to Old Joe Bailey or Weatherford Joe Bailey as he was sometimes called. This bay stallion was foaled in 1907 and died in 1934. There is no reported show or race record for Old Joe Bailey. It appears he served all of his life as a breeding stallion. The Joe Bailey name came from a famous Texas Politician named Joe Bailey, a senator from Gainesville, Texas and a member of the Democratic Party. The name Joe Bailey was so popular that there were several horses named Joe Bailey. The most famous of the other Joe Bailey’s was Gonzales Joe Bailey or the horse that was registered as Joe Bailey P-4. Old Joe Bailey was bred by Dick Baker of Weatherford, Texas. Over the years Old Joe Bailey was owned by several breeders. He first stood with Baker and his partner in the horse Bud Parker. C. D. Swearingen owned him and he sold the horse to Jack Tinsdale. Tinsdale sold him to E. A. Whiteside of Sipe Springs in 1931. The breeding record of Old Joe Bailey shows he sired some strong stallions and they include the legendary Yellow Wolf and his full brother Yellow Bear, both stallions used on the famed Waggoner Ranch of Vernon, Texas. Yellow Wolf is the sire of Beetch’s Yellow Jacket the sire of the legendary mares Lady Coolidge and Dixie Continued on page 42...

Beach. Lady Coolidge was the dam of many fine horses including Bert P-227 and Dixie Beach was the dam of the great stallion Harlan. Some other great stallions to carry the blood of Yellow Wolf are Dan Waggoner, Billy Van and Silvertone. The Old Joe Bailey sire record shows a number of good producing daughters. His daughter Nancy Bailey was the dam of the NCHA Hall of Fame cutting mare Miss Nancy Bailey. Miss Nancy Bailey was sired by

King a son of King Command by King P-234. He was an AQHA Champion. He in turn sired the great show stallion Dun Commander earner of 354 AQHA performance points. The next foal we will look at out of Queen H and sired by King P-234 will be Squaw H. Squaw H is the mare from the King P-234/Old Joe Bailey cross that appears in the seventh generation of Champion Apollitical Jess’ tail female line. Squaw H was a successful race mare that won against

Royal King by King P-234. Beauty Bailey by Old Joe Bailey was the dam of Gold King Bailey by Hank H. Hank H was the famous son of King P-234 and Queen H, a granddaughter of Old Joe Bailey. Jess Hankins’ brother J. O. had bought Queen H from a fellow we know today as Mr. Hay for $100.00. Hay had boarded some mares that Henry Antley, a tractor dealer, had taken in on trade for a tractor. The $100.00 filly was an orphan out of one of the mares. A man named Jim Nail originally owned this group of mares and was the man that traded for the tractor. The mother of the $100 filly is known today as a Nail Quarter Mare. The sire of $100 filly was Dan by Old Joe Bailey. The combination of King P-234 and Queen H was a very good one for J. O. Hankins from the start as the first foal was Duchess H. Duchess H produced several good colts for Hankins. One of the top ones was Bay Reba by Leo. Bay Reba was the dam of Commander Page 42

horses like Queenie, Nettie Hill, Ready, Leota W, Miss Panama, Roan Annie H and Wagon N. Our research of the race records for Squaw H shows that she raced approximately 38 times in official and unofficial races. She is the winner of 15 of these races including the Eagle Pass Derby and the Tucson Speed Stakes at 250 yards. Retired to the broodmare band Squaw H produced several quarter running horses as well as Squaw King. Squaw King was an AQHA ROM performer and NCHA money earner sired by King P-234. He was the sire of Squaw Leo, the sire of Be Aech Enterprise, the NRHA Hall of Fame stallion. Empress Bars by Three Bars was the 1960 foal out of Squaw H. She was an ROM runner with an old AAA rating on the track. (AAA on the track is a speed index above a 90 today.) Empress Bar is the sixth dam of Apollitical Jess. Her daughter Native Empress by Dancing Dervish (TB) was a highly successful race mare that won 11 stakes races THE WORKING HORSE • FALL 2011

including the Vandy’s Flash, Cypress Handicap and the Go Josie Go Stakes. She is the next mare in this line. This tail female line continues with Native Noblesse who is out of Native Empress. Native Noblesse was staked placed in the Paul Travis Stakes and the Boomer Sooner Spring Derby. She was the dam of the All American Futurity (G1) winner Noblesse Six and the quarter racing Mexico running champion Pure D Dash. Native Noblesse was the dam of Favorite Attraction an ROM runner. She is the dam of Half Time Attraction. Half Time Attraction was the dam of Apollitical Time, the 2005 AQHA Champion Three-Year-Old Filly and the 2006 AQHA Champion Aged Mare and Aged Horse. She in turn was the dam of our 2010 AQHA World Champion Apollitical Jess. She added the title of 2010 “Broodmare of the Year” because of the success of her son winning the World Championship. The pedigree of Queen H’s mother the Nail Quarter Mare is unknown. But Bob Denhardt has documented the pedigree of Dan, the sire of Queen H in the book FOUNDATION SIRES OF THE AMERICAN QUARTER HORSE. Dan was sired by Old Joe Bailey. His dam was reported by Denhardt to be a mare named June Bug. A horse named Harvester sired June Bug. Dan was bred by a man named Allred of Mineral Wells, Texas. Thus our racing champion traces to Queen H in the tail female line and she was bred to King P-234 to get our King P-234/Old Joe Bailey cross in the great runner

Squaw H. The last home of Old Joe Bailey was at the Whiteside Ranch. It was at the Whiteside Ranch that our story brings in the Old Joe Bailey bred mares with Royal King by King P-234. The Whiteside Ranch was home to Old Joe Bailey from 1931 to 1934. During this time Old Joe Bailey sired a stallion named Fred Bailey. Fred Bailey was not only sired by Old Joe Bailey, he was out of a mare that was listed today as Big Dun by Buck by Old Joe Bailey. Fred Bailey was the sire of a horse named Buckskin Joe. This stallion was a famous show horse and is often remembered by old timers as the “perfect quarter horse.” He was the Grand Champion stallion at Fort Worth in 1945. Buckskin Joe was sired by Fred Bailey and out of Maudy Bailey by Old Joe Bailey. He has a breeding pattern of 2 X 4 X 2 to Old Joe Bailey. Buckskin Joe was the sire of Pretty Pam, the 1954 AQHA Honor Roll Halter Horse. One of the daughters of Fred Bailey bred on the Whiteside Ranch was Sis Bailey B. This mare was bred just like Buckskin Joe. She was out of Roxie by Buck by Old Joe Bailey. Thus Sis Bailey B has a 2 X 4 X 3 breeding pattern to Old Joe Bailey. Sis Bailey B shows us that we can often find inbreeding in the tail female line especially with the taproot mare. Continued on page 46...

Maudy Bailey is our example of an Old Joe Bailey Mare. She was the dam of Buckskin Joe, the horse many considered the "perfect" quarter horse. The Photo is courtesy The AQHA Hall of Fame and Museum. THE WORKING HORSE • APRIL FALL 2011 2008

A stallion by the name of Band Time, a thoroughbred of Domino descent was brought into the Whiteside breeding program. He was mated with Sis Bailey B to produce Maurzy for the Whiteside Ranch. Maurzy was bred to Little Jazz to produce Jazmau. Jazmau became the property of Earl Albin the long time owner of Royal King. Sis Bailey B, Maurzy and Jazmau are the seventh, sixth and fifth dam’s respectively of One Time Royalty. But the original ties between Albin and Royal King with the Whiteside Ranch came in 1944 when Whiteside and Albin partnered to buy Royal King as a yearling from his breeder Felton Smathers. Albin later bought out Whiteside’s share in the horse. The mating of Royal King with Jazmau brings together the ingredients found in the tail female line of One Time Royalty with a King P-234/Old Joe Bailey cross. The foal produced from this cross that we are most concerned with is Royal Jazabell. This mare was an NCHA money winner with one AQHA halter point and seven AQHA performance points. Royal Jazabell is the fourth dam of One Time Royalty. Royal Jazabell is the dam of Bill’s Jazabell the next mare in our look at the tail female line of One Time Royalty. Bill’s Jazabell was a third place winner in the 1973 NCHA Open and Non-Pro Futurity. She was the 1976 NCHA Open Top Ten World Champion Mare. Bill’s Jazabell was sired by Cutter Bill. Bill’s Jazabell was the dam of Jazabell Quixote by Doc Quixote. Jazabell Quixote was the 1982 NCHA Non-Pro Futurity Champion. She was the 1983 Master Cutting Non-Pro Champion. The foals of Jazabell Quixote have earned $1,267,735.36. They include NCHA Open Futurity Champion July Jazz and NCHA Non-Pro Futurity Reserve Champion Smart Lil Jazalena (Jazalena), Docs All That Jazz, an NCHA Non-Pro Futurity Reserve Champion and Royal Serena Belle, an NCHA Open Futurity Reserve Champion. Royal Serena Belle a daughter of Shorty Lena is the dam of One Time Royalty. She retired from the arena with $124,196.21 in earnings. In addition to One Time Royalty she is the dam of Treymendous the winner of $65,924.17 and Kit Wit the winner of $54,273.03. Not only do we have the common ancestors of the King P-234 and Old Joe Bailey in these two young stallions but King P-234 and Old Joe Bailey have some common ancestors in their pedigrees. Let’s look at what we’re talking about. King P-234 was sired by Zantanon, a famous Mexican racehorse. Zantanon was sired by Little Joe by Traveler and the dam of Little Joe was Jenny. The pedigree of Traveler is unknown. Jenny was sired by Sykes Rondo by McCoy Billy by Old Billy. Jenny was out of May Page 46

Mangum by Anthony by Old Billy. Anthony was out of Paisiana. The dam of Zantanon was Jeanette by Billy by Big Jim by Sykes Rondo. The dam of Jeanette was a mare by Sykes Rondo. This gives Zantanon a breeding pattern of 3 X 4 X 3 to Sykes Rondo. The dam of King P-234 was Jabalina. This mare was sired by Strait Horse by Yellow Jacket. Yellow Jacket was sired by Little Rondo by Lock’s Rondo and his dam was Barbee Dun by Lock’s Rondo. Thus Yellow Jacket has a breeding pattern of 2 X 2 to Lock’s Rondo. Lock’s Rondo is sired by Whalebone by Old Billy. The dam of Whalebone was Paisiana. This makes Whalebone a full brother to Anthony the sire of May Mangum, the dam of Jenny. The dam of Strait Horse was a Gardner mare, whose pedigree is unknown. The dam of Lock’s Rondo was Mittie Stephens. Mittie Stephens was sired by Shiloh Jr and out of Nellie Gray. Mittie Stephens takes us back to Old Joe Bailey. The sire of Old Joe Bailey was Eureka. Eureka was sired by Shelby by Tom Driver by Steel Dust. The dam of Tom Driver was Mammouth by Shiloh. The dam of Shelby was Mittie Stephens. The sire of Mittie Stephens (Shiloh Jr) was sired by Shiloh. This is the Shiloh that was the sire of Old Billy. The dam of Old Joe Bailey was Susie McWhirter by Ben Burton by Blind Barney. Blind Barney was sired by Steel Dust by Harry Bluff. The dam of Ben Burton was a mare by Bailes’ Brown Dick. The dam of Susie McWhirter was Aury by Old Dutchman. Old Dutchman was sired by Lock’s Rondo by Whalebone and out of Mittie Stephens. The dam of Old Dutchman was Mollie by Steel Dust. The dam of Aury was a mare by Bailes’ Brown Dick. Bailes’ Brown Dick was the sire of Paisiana, the dam of Whalebone and Anthony. Mittie Stephens, Shelby and Old Dutchman were bred by Charles Haley, of Sweetwater, Texas. Bob Denhardt in his book FOUNDATION DAMS OF THE AMERICAN QUARTER HORSE tells us that she was foaled in 1869 and died in about 1892. She is listed in the appendix of THE AMERICAN STUD BOOK. She was the dam of Shelby in 1878 and Lock’s Rondo in 1880. Denhardt reports her other foals include Governor Roberts by Jack Boston in 1882; General Ross by Havre (TB) in 1888; Heeley by Blue Dick in 1889; Sally Johnson by Blue Dick in 1890 and Dead Cinch by Silent Friend in 1891. Denhardt considered her to be “one of the top four or five mares since the Civil War.” THE WORKING HORSE • FALL 2011

I find the tail female line a very intriguing facet of horse breeding. The first thing I found was that many of the mares that serve as taproot mares are inbred. We see that in Sis Bailey B who is inbred to Old Joe Bailey. The key to this idea is that the inbreeding in the taproot mare is more homozygous than the mare that is not inbred. By being more homozygous these mares should be more prepotent. By being prepotent they pass their good quality genes consistently to the next generation. Prepotent individuals stamp or mark their offspring with their good genes. The more visible form of this is their color and markings. Another facet of the tail female line is the passing of the Mitochondrial DNA. In this case the MtDNA in these two horses is different. This is our cellular source of energy for our body that we inherit from our mother. The MtDNA is passed down generation after generation through the tail female line. Thus Apollitical Jess gets his MtDNA from Queen H, who got her MtDNA from her mother not Dan her sire. The same holds true for One Time Royalty, who got his MtDNA from Sis Bailey B. Sis Bailey B was out of a mare named Roxie, whose dam was Flaxie. Thus the MtDNA we see in the One

Time Royalty comes from Flaxie, the grandmother of Sis Bailey B. Despite the two factors listed above what we have found in our look at the tail female lines of Apollitical Jess and One Time Royalty is that they are tied together in the tail female line with the King P-234/Old Joe Bailey cross. Then we see how these two great stallions then share the common blood of horses like the great Old Billy through such horses as Sykes Rondo, Anthony, Whalebone and then the multiple crosses to the great mare Mittie Stephens giving her a connection between the two stallions King P-234 and Old Joe Bailey. Thus we have the common ancestors in the tail female line of these two young stallion with King P-234 and Old Joe Bailey cross. Then we tie them together through their common bonds to Old Billy and Mittie Stephens. So by examining the tail female line of these two young stallions we have defined them as quarter horses with quarter horse roots that form the foundation of their pedigree in the tail female line and that truly makes them quarter horses.

August 10, 2011 Weatherford, TX. Matthews Cutting Horses, Warsaw, NC & Weatherford, TX is proud to report the sale of 2010 NCHA Open Futurity Champion One Time Royalty to SDM Quarter Horses of Goondiwindi, Queensland, Australia. The 2007 stallion (One Time Pepto x Royal Serena Belle, by Shorty Lena) earned the highest scoring run (230) in the history of the NCHA Futurity this past December when ridden by Colorado trainer Lloyd Cox to the Open Futurity Championship. Susan Marchant, owner of SDM Quarter Horses, expressed her intent to have Cox continue showing One Time Royalty in the United States for at least the remainder of his 4 year-old year; while the stallion will stand to a limited book of mares in Australia during the 2011 Australian breeding season, which commences September 1. Jeffrey Matthews, of Matthews Cutting Horses, who also owns the horse’s sire, One Time Pepto, said he is extremely pleased with the transaction. “This sale is really consistent with our long term breeding program strategy,” he explained. “The demand (from breeders) for One Time Pepto in Australia and internationally has been significant and growing rapidly. Since we only breed a very limited number of mares in Australia each year. I think One Time Royalty will be a very viable alternative for bringing the bloodline to Australian breeders.” Matthews added that he, too, intends to breed some of his own mares to One Time Royalty. While it is expected that SDM Quarter Horses will also stand One Time Royalty in the United States in 2012 to a limited book of approved mares, the details have not yet been released. One Time Royalty was one of One Time Pepto’s first foal crop in 2007. Since their debut in the show pen in 2010, 71 performers of that crop have earned $1,229,868.41 in NCHA and NRCHA competition. One Time Pepto made history at the 2010 NCHA Futurity by siring both the Open and Non-Pro Futurity Champions, something no other sire has accomplished in the same year. MYERS PERFORMANCE HORSE PROSPECT SALE Held August 27, 2011 Seven Down Arenas – Spearfish, South Dakota

Story & Photography by: Larry Larson Spearfish, SD – If the horse market is on that long awaited upward swing it has definitely started here in the Black Hills of Western South Dakota. The 2011 edition of the Myers Performance Prospect Sale was once again a first class production drawing International attention to their ranch raised performance horses. Held here on August 27th, Bill & Deb Myers from nearby St. Onge, SD, hosted their prospect sale east of Spearfish at the Seven Down Arenas. Their personal offering of 50 head was complimented by a select group of guest consignors from across the nation. Kaseys Shadow, a 2009 bay mare sired by the ranch’s senior sire Frenchmans Guy, drew considerable attention and has a whirlwind journey and career ahead of her. She is out of Generals French Lady by Bogies General, the dam of Heza Hot General and Colours Of Shadows with combined Equistat earnings of $30,165. Commanding a bid of $40,000 from Agent Carlos DaSilva, she will find a new home in the South American country of Brazil. DaSilva, acting again as the agent, also had the final bid on Guys Mis Laico, a 2009 chestnut mare sired by Leading Barrel Horse Sire Frenchmans Guy and out of the track record holding Streakin Six daughter, Miss Laico Six si 104. Destined for Brazil, this well-started prospect left the ring on a bid of $31,000. The maturity and balance seen in these prospects are backed by these strong Myers Ranch pedigrees. Sired by the Myers’ Streakin Six stallion World Speed AA, Wild N Speedy Guy also drew considerable interest with Barbara Johnson from Scottsdale, AZ having the final bid at $38,000. This strong 2009 bay gelding is out of French Wild Heart, a proven daughter of Frenchmans Guy, and the 100% producer of 2011 barrel futurity money earners now exceeding $27,000. Bill Myers presale comment was, “If this colt doesn’t make a superstar, I will be very disappointed.” With a 3-time NFR Barrel Racing Qualifier as her dam, Guys Royal Scarlett has a bright future in the performance arena and barrel racing world. Again by the $4 Million sire Frenchmans Guy, the 2009 palomino mare is out of Go Royal Scarlett, a daughter of Royal Go Go si 90 by Royal Bar si 95. Campaigned by Ruth Haislip from California, her phenomenal lifetime barrel racing earnings exceeded $400,000. Brady & Toni Huber from Oelrichs, SD are the new owners of this ‘royally bred’ filly on a bid of $32,500. At the conclusion of yet another successful sale, the Myers’ commented, “With an average of $20,166 – we were very pleased with the public’s acceptance of the first crop of two-year-old riding prospects by our young stallion A Smooth Guy. Also exciting for us was the $24,000 average on our stallion World Speed’s first crop of riders. We greatly appreciate all the return customers who have bought horses through our sale in the past, have gone on to do well with them in the competitive arenas and now return to purchase another prospect. We are grateful for their continuing confidence in our program.” 2011 AVERAGES: • MYERS 2 & 3-YEAR-OLDS 17 Head (Frenchmans Guy, World Speed, Hot Colours & A Smooth Guy) $24,500 • TWO-YEAR-OLDS 14 Head (Frenchmans Guy, World Speed, Hot Colours & A Smooth Guy) $24,607 • THREE-YEAR-OLDS 3 Head (Frenchmans Guy & Hot Colours) $24,000 • TOP SELLING RIDING MARE (TWO-YEAR-OLD) $40,000 • TOP SELLING RIDING GELDING (TWO-YEAR-OLD) $38,000 • MYERS OVERALL AVERAGE (Weanlings, Yearlings, Riders & Broodmares) $17,054 • TOP 5 HORSES - $34,300 • TOP 10 HORSES - $30,200 • TOTAL SALE AVERAGE - $16,435
