APRIL / MAY DIARY 2014 Welcome to our April / May Diary. What a busy couple of months we have! There are plenty of laughs to be had from Avalon’s newest talent in our Comedy Network cabaret (and you too could be a star, see page 3) whilst in our bigger venues we have Alan Davies, a new show from The Reduced Shakespeare Company and the welcome return of the Grumpy Old Women. A full music programme includes Martha Reeves, Puccini’s La Bohème, The Searchers and Don Williams plus some wonderful classical concerts from the London Mozart Players and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. In our Ashcroft Theatre we have some great drama including a new production of ‘Our Country’s Good’ directed by the play’s original director Max Stafford-Clark. There is also a new production of the Olivier Award winning ‘Morecambe’ coming to us, which is apt because Fairfield Halls was the only venue in which a complete live performance by Morecambe and Wise was ever filmed! We look forward to seeing you soon at Fairfield Halls.

LONDON MOZART PLAYERS Conductor/Piano - Howard Shelley Programme: POULENC Sinfonietta HAYDN Piano Concerto No. 11 in D POULENC Aubade HAYDN Symphony No. 104, ‘London’ Howard Shelley returns to Fairfield Halls with his second LMP programme; this a charming and unusual combination of Haydn and Poulenc. Haydn was the great classical symphonist who did more than any other composer before him to push the boundaries of the form. The great London symphony was the final of six written for the composer’s second visit to London, by which time he was one of the most celebrated composers in Europe. One common thread that links both Haydn and Poulenc is perhaps their use of humour in their compositions. Poulenc was a member of Les Six, the group of six composers in the 1920s that swept aside the styles of Wagner and Impressionism, bringing strength and simplicity to new music. The Aubade, a love song or poem evoking daybreak, is scored for piano and 18 other instruments, whilst the Sinfonietta is a ‘sweet and sour’ work with overtones of romanticism, underscored by darker emotions which are never far from the surface. £12 - £31.50

SNAKES AND LADDERS
Produced by Plenty Productions and Rolemop Arts. Written by Sarah Naomi Lee. Directed by Kerri McLean. ‘I'm not a golden retriever, I'm not an orange Revel and I'm NOT Scary Spice...’ Amma just has to relax, Kitten loves her ‘good hair’ and Sista is allergic to Beyoncé and all Timotei adverts. Scissor Sista wants to change the world (starting with the hair in it) but will Simone let her? Snakes and Ladders is a powerful, darkly comic drama about identity and the testing of family loyalties, inspired by real life stories collected from black hairdressers in the South East of England. Following sell out performances in 2011, Snakes and Ladders returns for its first London/South East tour. Think Mike Leigh meets jerk chicken, Snakes and Ladders is both funny and poignant. ‘Sarah Naomi Lee's writing is fresh, buoyant, and touching’ Financial Times £12 & £16

THE REDUCED SHAKESPEARE COMPANY The Bible: The Complete Word of God (abridged) Written by Adam Long, Reed Martin and Austin Tichenor. Following the sell-out success of their 2013 UK Tour, it’s apocalypse now as the three cultural guerrillas of The Reduced Shakespeare Company set their reductive sights on the good book with The Bible: The Complete Word of God (abridged). Yes, it’s an affectionate, irreverent roller coaster ride from fig leaves to Final Judgment as the bad boys of abridgement tackle the great theological questions: Did Adam and Eve have navels? Did Moses really look like Charlton Heston? And why isn’t the word ‘phonetic’ spelt the way it sounds? Whether you are Catholic or Protestant, Muslim or Jew, Atheist or Jedi, you will be tickled by the RSC’s romp through old time religion. ‘There is no doubt about it, these three lads are in a league of their own when it comes to vivid originality both in the show itself and its performance. THE NINTH THRILLING INSTALMENT FROM THE OFFICIAL AGATHA CHRISTIE THEATRE COMPANY
HERCULE POIROT'S NEXT CASE... This new production of Agatha Christie’s Black Coffee includes Company regulars: Liza Goddard, star of such TV hits as Bergerac and the long-running Give Us A Clue, Gary Mavers who is best known for playing heart-throb doctor Andrew Attwood in Peak Practice and Ben Nealon, perhaps best loved for his role as Capt Forsythe in the ITV drama Soldier Soldier. A quintessential English country estate is thrown into chaos following the murder of eccentric inventor Sir Claud Amory, and the theft of his new earth shattering formula. Arriving at the Estate moments too late, one man immediately senses a potent brew of despair, treachery, and deception amid the estate's occupants. That man is Hercule Poirot. In the first play ever written by Agatha Christie we are introduced to a character who went on to become the most famous detective of all time and the only fictional character ever to receive a fullpage obituary in the New York Times.
