Sonata No. 27 in E minor, Op. 90 Echo’s Dance from The Sanguine Fan Le Tombeau de Couperin Rialto Ripples Piano Sonata No. 2 in B flat minor, Op. 36 (1913)
Croydon-born pianist Freddy Kempf returns to Fairfield with a recital marking the centenary of the First World War. The programme opens with Beethoven’s Sonata No. 27, composed exactly 100 years before the outbreak of the conflict. Elgar’s ballet The Sanguine Fan was composed and performed in 1917 at the suggestion of his close friend and confidante Lady Alice Stuart-Wortley to raise money for wartime charities. Each of the six movements in Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin is dedicated to the memory of a friend of the composer who had died fighting in World War I. Composed between 1914 and 1917, the work is perhaps surprisingly light-hearted and reflective rather than sombre; but as Ravel commented, “The dead are sad enough, in their eternal silence.” The lighter tone continues with Gershwin’s playful rag, Rialto Ripples, composed in 1917, before we are treated to the lush Romanticism of Rachmaninov’s Piano Sonata No. 2. £15 (£2.25 booking fee per ticket, reduced to £1 per ticket if paying in person, in cash)

BEETHOVEN
Piano Trio in B flat major, Op. 97 ‘Archduke’ TCHAIKOVSKY Piano Trio in A minor, Op. 50 Violinist Nicola Benedetti, cellist Leonard Elschenbroich and pianist Alexei Grynyuk are leading soloists of their generation performing as a trio regularly at a host of prestigious venues worldwide. Performing two stellar works of the chamber music canon, their collective musicianship and technical brilliance are sure to shine brightly.

The magnificent Archduke Trio is one of the peaks of the repertoire and was chosen by Nicola as one of her castaway selections on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs earlier this year. Tchaikovsky’s passionate Piano Trio is the only work the composer ever wrote for this combination of instruments. These two pieces are linked by friendship: Beethoven’s Archduke Trio was dedicated to his friend and composition student, Archduke Rudolph of Austria (hence the nickname) and Tchaikovsky’s work was subtitled ‘In memory of a great artist’, in reference to the pianist Nikolai Rubinstein, his friend and mentor. £13, £15 & £18 (£2.25 booking fee per ticket, reduced to £1 per ticket if paying in person, in cash)

With glorious melodies, extensive lyricism and divine harmonies, it’s no wonder Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 is known as the greatest and recreating these memorable moments is the young virtuoso Alessio Bax. A dazzling curtain raiser and another Russian masterpiece, Glinka’s whirlwind Overture to Russlan and Ludmilla has an exciting combination of earthy exuberance and heroic feeling. Alexander Shelley, a remarkable young conductor, leads the orchestra through this concert full of energy and splendour. A spectacular concert that pays tribute to the genius of Tchaikovsky, opening with the patriotic Marche Slave, full of traditional Russian folk melodies and elements of the Russian national anthem which can also be heard in Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture. From one exuberant ending to a triumphant beginning, Martin Roscoe, one of Britain’s most beloved pianists, introduces the thunderous opening chords of Tchaikovsky’s sublimely romantic and hugely admired Piano Concerto No. 1. The Bartered Bride Overture Cello Concerto Scheherazade
‘She is a graceful, lyrical player with a sound like a fine-spun silver thread. Yet I was both impressed and emotionally moved by her playing of [Britten's] third suite. Clein was alert to every passing nuance.’ The Times A display of quintessentially Czech music from two Bohemian legends, with Smetana’s exhilarating Overture to his first and most enduring comic opera The Bartered Bride and Dvorˇák’s magnificent Cello Concerto, performed by world-class cellist Natalie Clein. Although composed in America, it expresses the melodic inflections derived from Czech folk music with a continuous flow of invention and lyricism. Young Spanish Maestro Eduardo Portal will lead the orchestra in the tale of ‘One Thousand and One Nights’ in Rimsky-Korsakov’s colourful epic, Scheherazade. The mysteriously haunting sound of the violin voice of Scheherazade, as she calms the Sultan’s menacing brass fanfares, along with the strumming of the harp, calls to mind a mystical far-away land. £8 - £30.
