THE GAME

GEARSOFWAR: JUDGMENT

By: Shamar Roundtree

With Gears of War 3, one of the leading Xbox 360 franchises came to an end. They capped off an exciting trilogy and with all the loose ends tied up, the series had nowhere to go. Or so we thought. Much like Halo, the Gears franchise decided that it is too early to die and returned for another helping with the fans. Is Gears of War: Judgment worth another venture on the battlefield or should you remember the trilogy as it was, at three games. The dark beginnings of the war Visually, the engine is starting to show it’s age and strain. All the palettes of grey still look great and the game keeps true to its visually gratuitous violence, but it is no longer the standout of the console library. The environments are definitely the highlight as you get to see the different side of Sera, much closer to emergence day than seen in previous games. The visual style is well maintained and the changes are subtle but gorgeous. Gameplay-wise, it’s a true and time tested affair. You will shimmy from cover to cover, popping out and putting down your opponents, closing emergence holes and ducking and weaving across the battlefield. The difficulty spikes in certain places, making it pretty obvious that this game is meant to be played in

g-vegasmagazine g-vegasmagazine || 55

co-op mode, with a friend (or 3) at your side or over XBL. The progression is as straight forward as it gets, with 0 to slim chance of getting lost anywhere. There is a very interesting twist to gameplay. As you narrated yourself through the missions, you will find Declassified triggers that you can activate. This will change the direction of the narrative as Baird and Kilo Squad will reveal additional mission details not in the original court report (story element). In turn, activating a marker will change one or more details of the mission. Anything from replacing regular wretches with lambent ones to putting a time cap on a specific section. Beating a level of a declassified setting is more challenging and gets you more reward points. Overall, it’s a great twist to vary the gameplay. The multiplayer is back, though without horde mode. All of the standards are still here with a few extras that you may be familiar with from other games such as Domination and Free-For-

All. Horde is replaced by Survival, where you and your team defend three different points from a locust invasion. The introduction of classes makes it a for an interesting twist and adds a layer of strategy to everything you do. You can switch classes on the fly and adjust to any situation as you see fit. It’s not quite as addictive as horde mode, but a lot of people will find it a formidable replacement. Verdict: Judgment does a few things differently and it’s enough to make it feel like a whole new different game. In some ways, it’s a good thing. It’s a serviceable prequel of sorts, but it doesn’t feel like it’s enough. The series used to set a benchmark for the genre and for the console. Now it’s just your regular run of the mill game. It’s fun, and it will scratch some of the itches you’ve had since Gears 3, but it’s not the same. If you’re a huge Gears fan, this is your day, if not, BioShock and Tomb Raider are both out there and arguably a better experience than before.

FASHION

BATTLE OF THE BRANDS To know and understand what the Battle of the Brands event entails we must start at the beginning….. Overton’s began in 1976 in the back of a family grocery store in Greenville, NC. An avid waterskier named Parker Overton had difficulty finding quality equipment in the area, and discovered it was easier to work directly with manufacturers to get skis rather than waiting on local sporting good shops. Unfortunately, this required him to buy several skis at a time, but word traveled fast and he soon had a loyal following showing up at his father’s grocery store to pick up skis, vests, and even place orders. He started collecting names and addresses so he could mail out his inventory monthly, and the rest…as they say…is history. Today the industry has grown leaps and bounds and many different manufacturers/brands have arisen. This created a need for an event like The Battle of the Brands. This Battle of the Brands event April 20th is an all around day of fun on both land and water. It’s 100% free to the public, yes you. For the consumer it is your chance to come check out (check out meaning = drive and ride) the latest and greatest wakeboard boats, wakeboards, wakesurfers,

g-vegasmagazine | 7

wakeskates, towers, speakers, and more. It’s also a time for you to meet and mingle with tons of professional athletes in the industry and watch them ride. Without a doubt Overton’s will have a huge promotion in conjunction with the event so don’t forget the wallets. Don’t let this weather scare you… The start we gotten off to this spring seems to be some type of cruel joke put on by mother nature but hopefully by April 20th things will turn around a bit. Just in case the water is still chilly, Overton’s will have Wet Suits available if you should not own one. The event is held at the beautiful Rollingview Marina located on Falls Lake. For more details, address, pro’s and brands attending give Overton’s a like on Facebook and check out their Events tab. This event really helps having a sales force that is networked in with the regional “core” riders. Overton’s also has sponsored a team of local riders that participates in various tournaments and grass root events such as BATTLE of the BRANDS, ride with the pros, NC INT and more for years. Lastly I would say stocking high-end boards that offer that “core” level of performance is key. Being able to touch and feel boards, try on boots really helps lure people in vs. shopping online or thru a

catalog as well.

By: Krystal Clegg

Pardon the bad pun, but the boating community has undoubtedly kept Overton’s floating for the past 35 years. The safety and security of that community is of the utmost importance to every employee here, and we take the responsibility of providing quality products to those folks very seriously. We work closely with Coast Guard auxiliary units all over the country to provide floatation and location devices for volunteer search and rescue groups, and have provided support for thousands of charities nationwide. We make every effort to give back to the communities where we do business. Throughout the years, Overton’s has helped fund boating safety initiatives in several states, and has provided water sports equipment and advice to several camps and recreation departments from Florida to Alaska. Last year, Overton’s helped sponsor nearly 100 waterski and wakeboard events in the United States and abroad, including the 52nd annual Masters Waterski and Wakeboard Tournament and the King of Wake Series.

THE PURSUIT OF A GOOD CAUSE

G-Vegas Soccer Team Starts off Season with a 4-0 Victory and After an incredibly successful season in the fall of 2012, the G-Vegas Soccer team has kicked off the spring season very strongly, beating Hunters 4-0 after entirely dominating the game on Saint Patrick’s Day. While the team had to deal with the loss of many good players, recruitment has been a full success and many new talents have joined the roster. According to Co-captain David Jury, “this may become our most successful season yet.” Though there is a great passion for the game, G-Vegas soccer has proven to be about much more than soccer. Last season, the team successfully collected funds for charity and was able to hand over a five hundred dollar check to a local family. This year, the team has made it its goal to beat its own record in making a difference in our community. “We are supporting ‘Love for Larue,’ a campaign to raise funds for Larue, a three year old girl living in Eastern Carolina and suffering from lymphomic leukemia. We are applying various methods to raise g-vegasmagazine | 9

funds and thus far it looks very promising” said David Jury and Stefan Haus, the team’s two captains. The tragic story of little Larue, who was diagnosed with the disease over the Christmas holidays last year, has touched the team and the entire G-Vegas crew deeply, and we will leave no stone unturned to raise the funds necessary to support Laure and her family. Winning games for a good cause makes the game even more attractive. Join Us For Our Sponsored Bike Ride with Babit’s Bikes You can help out the good cause by joining G-Vegas Soccer and Babits Bike’s sponsored bike ride on Saturday, May fourth at 1PM.We will meet at Babits Bike’s shop at 1322 E 10th Street and tour the greenway. Donations will be strictly on a voluntary basis and all proceeds will go toward Love for Larue. You will be able to buy t-shirts and meet the G-Vegas soccer team. We encourage the G-Vegas community to participate in the fundraiser and support the G-Vegas soccer team in its effort to win PGSA and continue to support the cause.

Come out in support of the team. Games take place almost every Sunday at the PGSA soccer complex. Please check http:// www.pgsasoccer.com/adult.asp to see the detailed schedule.

GOODBYE MARCH

By: Barefoot Wade

I think the cold weather is officially behind us and the spring of 2013 is in our midst. Most of you experienced a spring break of epic proportions and hopefully you arrived safely back in Greenville with a lot of fun stories, but with no harm done to your permanent record. Although I enjoyed what March brought us, I’m really stoked about spring time being here.

April is such a fun month, probably because it serves as a precursor to the summertime. I’ve got some fun trips planned for this month and there are some cool things going on around Greenville as well. I’m saying goodbye to March by attending a Keller Williams show at the end of the month at The Lincoln Theater in Raleigh. If you haven’t heard of Keller Williams, he is the original one man band. And though he rarely gets radio play, he pretty much sells out everywhere he plays. A lot of what I do on stage is inspired (cheaply ripped off) by what Keller Williams has already done. A couple days later (March 30) I will be taking

g-vegasmagazine | 11

the inspiration from that show and using it to play at A.J. McMurphy’s. At the beginning of April, I’m headed right back to Raleigh to see Eric Clapton in concert for the first time. I’ve always been a big Eric Clapton fan but have never been able to catch one of his shows. It seems like karma came around big time because I ended up winning tickets for this show off the radio. The next day I’m jumping on a boat to Ocracoke so I can play there the following weekend. Sadly though, this means I will miss “The Ultraviolet Hippopotamus” show at Peasants on Thursday, April 4 as well as the Reggae band “Signal Fire” the following night on April 5. Being that I usually just work weekends this time of year, I’ll probably hang out in Ocracoke until the next weekend starts and I have to go to my next show. Once I get back from my Island sabbatical, I’ll be playing Thursday, April 18 up at Peasants Pub. I really enjoy this place and they’re bringing a lot to the Greenville night life as well as the local music scene so make sure you swing by there whenever you can. The

next day (April 19) G-VEGAS magazine will be hosting the “Jah Vegas Roots & Reggae Poolside Jam” at The Landing with Jah Creation. These guys are a damn fine Reggae band and I’ve seen them play all up and down the east coast. We’ve even played across the street from each other down in Key West on more than one occasion. This looks like it’s going to be the most epic pool party of the year, so make sure you don’t miss it. The next day is April 20, and I’m no fortune teller but I think everyone is going to be in a really good mood that day. Since you’re going to be in great spirits, you should go check out David Dixon at Peasants that night. I’d be there but I’ve got a show in Emerald isle that night at The Emerald Club. The weekend after that I’m headed back to Ocracoke for another extended weekend stay. And after that, I’ll pretty much stay at the beach until fall time comes back around. Don’t forget, if you’re looking for open mic jams you can go to Peasants on Monday, A.J. McMurphy’s on Tuesday and The LIVE Bar on Thursday!

LIFE

Don’t be an April’s Fool! By: Brian Goings

A lot of people lately have been hung up on the search for love and trying to find that special someone but are not ready. In fact, we each have experienced love in some form or fashion be it parental, sibling, child, friend and yes even a pet. People should realize that love is there, just not the companion. So for your search for “love” you need to start looking for your companion. In finding your companion(s) you can find that special someone. The one that makes you smile just from the thought of them. The one you hear the music playing in the back ground and the birds and butterflies start flying around your head. BAM! Now that you are back to reality... know that you can’t get what you are not giving. Are you really making yourself available for someone to show you that they care and want to love on you. People jump

g-vegasmagazine g-vegasmagazine||15 15

in and out of relationships so fast that they don’t heal and all that baggage is brought to a new person and with the baggage comes the drama and fights that doesn’t need to be there. When was the last time you told yourself that you loved yourself? Have you gone on a date with yourself, treat yourself to a special occasion and get a chance to re-know yourself so that you will know what makes you happy and what makes the real you shine. All of these things will help you determine if you are really ready for that next relationship. It will allow you to not settle for something less than you want and it will let you deny those that try to make you change who you are. It is that bullet proof vest that will help you turn your back on those who try to force themselves on you. People will do that when they see that you are vulnerable. The

other part of loving is forgiving. You need to forgive those who have hurt you so that you can let go of the hurt and anger that you fester up within your mind. If you don’t, whoever this new guy or girl is will reap the whiplash that they do not deserve because they don’t know what is going on. Love should not hurt but it does because people love in their own interpretation of what it is and try to mold it to what they think it should be. If you will just let love be what it is and just flow with it then you can live a happy life with whomever. The next time you think about love...make sure you that you are love acceptance ready and not love receptive ready. Make sure you can handle what you are saying that you are looking for because when you do you will find what you are looking for.

SOUND - LOCAL

Greenville: Fertile Soil For Diverse Artists ECU students continue to vitalize their downtown resources in pursuit of their dreams. Males and females alike benefit from Greenville venues and make connections while expressing their passions for music. Ashley Gardner, an ECU student, experiences these benefits firsthand while advancing her musical career. I spoke with Ashley about performing downtown and following her dreams. Kara: How old were you when you first started performing? Ashley: I’ve always love performing in front of people, whether it was high school chorus concerts or theatrical plays and musicals. But I only just recently got into the serious music scene. I began with writing parodies of hit songs my freshman year. Then, sophomore year I began writing my own music, with my own feelings and own chord schemes. Kara: How has ECU and downtown Greenville helped advance your career as a performer? Ashley: ECU has really helped me because I’ve met SO many people, and so many opportunities have presented themselves to me, from performing songs at the campus drag shows to playing downtown at the Tipsy Teapot and Peasant’s Pub.

g-vegasmagazine | 19

Kara: How often and where do you perform? Ashley: I try to perform whenever I can. Monday nights are open mic nights at Peasant’s Pub, so I try to hop on that when I can. I’ll be performing at an outdoor concert April 6th and also at this year’s Relay for Life! So excited. I’m also in the Magnolia Belles, ECU/s all-female a cappella group. We sing at events all the time around Greenville and ECU and we have a concert April 21st! Kara: How do you feel about the Greenville music scene? Ashley: There are so many unknown artists around Greenville, male and female. I’ve seen mostly male, but there are females as well. Greenville is truly a melting pot of unknown talent, and I’ve had the privilege of playing along side of them. It’s been great. It’s been quite the experience. Kara: Do you feel like you are in the minority, being a female performer in Greenville? Ashley: Being a female and singing, I honestly don’t know enough (yet) about the Greenville music scene to say whether or not males or females get more gigs. I’d like to say it’s both. But, as I mentioned earlier, I’ve played at drag shows - I performed funny parodies. Being openly gay, I’ve gained so

By: Kara McGinley

many more wonderful opportunities to meet different types of people and sing in various places. So, being a female in the music scene here is cool, but being a lesbian and singing, (laughs) I can honestly say I’ve met even more people and had more diverse opportunities, which is great! It’s been an amazing experience. Kara: Any advice to other artists in Greenville? Ashley: Put yourself out there. Make videos of your music. That’s what I do. That how I’ve gotten musical attention. My biggest “hit” video was my “Tonight at ECU” song, the parody of “Tonight I’m Loving You” by Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull. If you want to sing/perform, do it! Don’t give up! If you have a passion for something, you better chase it with all you’ve got! Ashley’s love for music is brought to life through her performances. She will be performing at: The Town Commons Saturday, April 6 @ 1PM Minges Coliseum during Relay For Life Friday, April 12 Peasant’s Pub during Monday’s open-mic nights.

BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY TEST YOURSELF Twenty-one years ago, basketball legend Magic Johnson promised the American AIDS activist Elisabeth Glaser, who had contracted the deadly HIV virus via blood transfusion and unknowingly passed it on to her daughter through breast feeding, that he would become the face of the disease and raise public awareness about the silent killer. Commenting on the recently released and first FDA approved home-HIV test OraQuick, Johnson said he considered it “a game changer” in the fight against the disease. The new The new In-Home-HIV Test In-Home-HIV Test is getting positive is getting posifeedback from tive feedback experts from experts

Orasure Technologies, the producer of OraQuick, promises accurate results in twenty min-

utes without leaving the privacy of your own home. The test does not require drawing blood but is administered via oral swab and is affordable for nearly everyone at a cost of about 40 US dollars. According to the Huffington Post, the test – although not entirely accurate – is relatively reliable. Assessments conducted by the manufacturer revealed that the test correctly detected the HIV virus 92 percent of the time; however, it was 99.9 percent accurate in ruling out that a given test taker was carrying the virus. According to the FDA, that means it could “incorrectly identify only one patient as having HIV for every 5,000 HIV-negative people tested.” AIDS remains a major cause of death worldwide, and the Center For Disease Control warns that over 1.1 million people in the United States are infected with the HIV virus. According to the CDC’s website, “almost 1 in 5 (18.1%) are unaware of their infection.” While awareness can help contain the spread of the disease and prompt patients to seek treatment, only few Americans decide to get tested. According to PBS.org, testing rates

By: Stefan Haus

have hovered around twenty percent only. Part of the reason for this is the fact that many people don’t have health care and don’t want to spend the money to go see a doctor. Another reason is the stigma that comes with HIV tests. The availability and affordability of OraQuick eliminates both of these factors and should incentivize people to self-administer the HIV test. The Center for Disease Control’s website shows that North Carolina has a disproportionally high rate of HIV infections when compared with the rest of the country. Furthermore, “the South accounted for 48% of the 17,774 persons with a diagnosis of AIDS who died in the 50 states and the District of Columbia” in 2009. The test is affordable and available at any of the major pharmacies in Greenville and the surrounding areas. Its accuracy and the FDA’s seal of approval eliminate further excuses not to get tested (or to test yourself that is). Be smart! Get tested!

HEALTH

How to Sleep Better We all know how important getting a good night’s sleep is for our daily functioning. Besides feeling tired and irritable after a poor night of sleep, insufficient sleep has also been linked to a number of chronic diseases including increasing your risk of depression, obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Poor sleep also causes lapses in attention and memory that can impede productivity and learning and cause impaired driving. The amount of nightly sleep needed can vary widely from one person to the next, but most adults require between 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night. It is important for your 7-9 hours of sleep to be consecutive hours. There is a cyclic progression of sleep through the night as we progress from light sleep to deeper stages of sleep. Interruption of this cycle can counteract the benefits of a full night of sleep. There are many possible causes for a bad night’s sleep, but one of the more common causes is poor sleep hygiene. Sleep hygiene is a set of simple behaviors that improve the quality of your sleep. Here are some tips to improve your sleep hygiene and get a better night’s rest: • Avoid caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol around bedtime. Excess caffeine throughout the day can make it difficult to fall asleep when it’s time to go to bed. Avoiding caffeine within 6 hours of bedtime can help you to get to sleep faster. Nicotine use has been shown to not only make it difficult to fall asleep, but also

g-vegasmagazine | 25

spoil the quality of sleep. • Exercise. Exercise in the morning or afternoon can help you get to sleep more easily and get more restful sleep by physically exhausting you. • Keep a regular bedtime, and wake up at the same time every day. Although some can easily rearrange their sleep patterns, there are many who struggle with the slightest change to their sleep pattern. A strict, regular bedtime can work wonders for these people. If you struggle on Monday morning after a weekend of late nights and sleeping in, this may be the solution for you. • Create a comfortable bedtime environment. You should have a comfortable bed, and reserve it for sleep and sex. Other activities like watching TV, surfing the web, or reading do not need to be done in bed. If you associate your bed with stimulating activities, it makes it harder to wind down when you get in bed to sleep. TVs and computers should not even be in the bedroom. Your bedroom should be a quiet and dark environment. • Avoid stimulating activities before bedtime. Create a bedtime routine that includes relaxing activities. Avoid reading, watching TV, physical activity, or computer use right before going to bed. The light from TV and computer screens causes you to stay alert as they interfere with your body’s sensation of darkness

and night time. Eating a large meal before bedtime can lower the quality of your sleep as you expend a lot of energy to digest the meal, but a small snack is okay. • Don’t watch the clock. If you are lying in bed and cannot fall asleep, watching the time tick away will only increase your anxiety about falling asleep and make it more difficult for you to sleep. If this is a major problem for you, you should make sure that any clock in your room is not visible from your bed. Rather than allowing your anxiety about falling asleep to take hold of you, get out of bed and do something relaxing for 15 minutes, then return to your bed and try falling asleep again. Keep in mind that each individual has different needs and what works for one may not work for another. You should talk to your doctor about any difficulty getting to sleep, difficulty staying asleep, frequent awakenings at night, or tiredness and fatigue during the day, as these may be signs of a more serious illness. At the end of the day, everyone deserves a good night’s sleep, and we can all achieve that.
