LIFE

IT’S OKAY TO BE SELFISH BY RANDY MOORE

The word “selfish” seems to have a negative connotation attached to it when we use it to describe a person. When we think of people who are selfish, we tend to think of people who only care about themselves and only behave in ways that will illustrate that. YOLO You only get one life in the body you are in right now, so why not live it the way that you want to? Find time to do things that put a smile on your face and make you feel at ease. There is a lot of ugly in this world, so when we can find things that make us feel like life is worth living, it is truly amazing. If you like to travel and experience various cultures, make time to do that. If you enjoy getting high and watching Jersey Shore with friends, make time to do that. If your simple pleasure is going to the movies by yourself and eating a family-sized box of M&M’s, then make time to do that. It’s your life, so try your best to live it the way you genuinely want to.

People aren’t happy, but it’s not your job to fix them

A lot of people will agree that you feel good when you help others, but it is hard to do that when you aren’t happy with the person you are. It is hard not to get sucked into negativity when you are surrounded by it, but that doesn’t mean that you are obligated to sulk with these types of people. Everyone is ultimately in control of the way that they perceive and view the world, so it is not your responsibility to dedicate your time and effort to try and change these people. If they want to change their lifestyle and their way of thinking, they will. You can’t change someone who is not willing to change themselves, so don’t take away too much time from working on yourself to work on someone else.

You can’t help others if you aren’t helping yourself

Most people are not completely satisfied with who they are, so instead of complaining about it and procrastinating doing something to change it, try and work on it. For example, if you don’t like that you feel uncomfortable being vulnerable with close people in your life, try and fix that. No one you are trying to help

can be fully benefited from you if you are not happy and content with yourself. Work on yourself before committing to working on others. You should try to be really really selfish…The more selfish and nurturing you can be for yourself, the by-product for those that you love or work that you do is greatly enhanced.

If you’re the one who needs help

A lot of people look at mental therapy as a taboo concept, something that was once viewed as extremely shameful for people to engage in. Although seeking help is not as taboo as it once was, it is still a subject that needs to be taken more seriously and viewed with much less judgment. Life can be hard, and ugly, and sad, and sometimes we need help from others to get through it. Being able to recognize that you need help and then actually seeking ways to get that help is extremely brave, and should never be shamed by anyone.

You just may need a break

Similar to therapy, vacation therapy has been known to work for many people. Sometimes life can just be too much, and getting away or taking a break can be the best option for some people. We all need time to take a breather and to refresh ourselves in order to get back to our full potential. Whether that be stepping outside from work to take a short walk, or flying across the country to take your mind off of things, sometimes these options are what is needed for your sanity.

You need your alone time

Maybe you aren’t able to fly across the country right now, but you are able to have your alone time. Everyone needs time to themselves, to just do things that keep us at peace while not having to worry about socializing or the way others are perceiving us. Whether you’re snuggled up in your bed with a good book and a hot cup of tea, or you’re taking a long walk outside with some good music, we all need time to ourselves to just enjoy our own company.
