LIFE

DREAM WORK IN THE NEW YEAR BY BRIAN GOINGS

Every year we see many themes for the new year. Well they are cute and all but do they really apply to your life? We make new years resolutions that sometimes we keep and sometimes we forget. A dream, we never forget. In all of this, the worst thing you can do is to doubt yourself. In fact it is the very thing that you should try to overcome. Not too many people know that they doubt themselves. They call it procrastination. Truth is, the root of procrastination is fear. People often say the fear of failing or the fear of succeeding but either way it’s the fear that is holding you back. In this new year lets focus on pushing past the fear and going out on a limb. So many people know what they need to do to get to the vision that they see for themselves but put it off to wait for the right moment. Everyday that you wake up should be that moment that you make the decision to make yourself and your life better. Every day you should be doing something that makes you get closer to what you want to do in life. This could be spending 30

whereUparty | 5

minutes to a hour researching or asking people questions. The work you put into your dreams determines the amount of time you can say you have actually enjoyed your time working, doing, performing (insert your dream here). Now you may say, “well I do not know where or how to start. What can I do?” Well just like I have always been told growing up. Closed mouths aren’t fed. Ask questions. If you see someone doing what you want to do, ask them for pointers. We live in a society where you can also find many things on the net. If what you want to do has a creative aspect, tap into your creative self and let your work become your business card. From a marketing aspect, learn how to brand yourself and your work will become your calling card. Now a word of advice, you can have a new years resolution but putting past your fear and doing what you have always wanted to do should not be apart of the resolution. It should be apart of the promise that you make to yourself. In this new year be who you want to be by embracing the bravery to make your dreams come true.

NEW ALBUM RELEASE IN 2018

NEW ALBUM RELEASE IN 2018

When’s it out? TBA When’s it out? TBA What’s on it? Gothy comeback single ‘Little Dark Age’ is the only confirmed track so far, but expect ‘When You Die’ and ‘Me And Michael’, which were part of the band’s summer setlists, to feature too.

What have they said about it? “We felt like we had reached a flow, it was the sort of chemistry, the kind of magic feeling we had when we started the band.” – Ben Goldwasser

What’s on it?No tracklisting has been confirmed at present, but hopefully every track is as banging as the Talking Heads-sampling ‘Bad Liar’. What has she said about it? “I think it’s fair to say that people know the year I’ve had, and I’ve poured my heart into my music and I wanted it to be fresh. It wasn’t really about charts for me or numbers. It was more just about what I could creatively do for my music. So, yes, I can successfully say that my inspiration for this next album is in full motion and it will be very soon.”

AIRBNB:

THE GOOD AND THE BAD Airbnb took root in the simple idea of bringing people together through the better use of empty rooms. Brian Chesky, its founder, rented out a couch in his San Francisco apartment as a way to earn extra money and provide an affordable lodging alternative to travelers visiting the city. In an interview with Tim O’Reilly, Chesky admitted that he never expected Airbnb would realize its current level of success. Hosts and guests, for the most part, are almost cult-like in their adoration of the company. Now Chesky and his team are working hard to manage unprecedented growth and society is struggling with how it perceives the changes Airbnb is having on our neighborhoods. Since its launch in 2008, Airbnb has amassed over 2 million listings in 192 countries and grown to an estimated present value of $25 billion.

The Good Hosts and Guests love Airbnb, they offer an opportunity for hosts to make money, and for travellers to save money and stay more comfortably. The company’s success has largely been attributed to its elimination of the friction in travel accommodations, saving money for travelers and putting our largest class of idle assets to work, our homes. Much of its success may simply be good timing. Some have suggested Airbnb is a billion dollar company that shouldn’t even exist. Whatever the reasons for its meteoric rise, Airbnb has created new opportunities to generate income for homeowners and renters alike. According to Chesky and the Airbnb community, the income generated by Airbnb provides residents in cities across the globe with a means to retain their homes and elevate their standard of living in uncertain economic times.

The Bad Airbnb has been criticized for changing neighborhood dynamics, disrupting the housing market and avoiding taxes. There’s often conflicts between property rights and municipal/HOA regulation. Homes bought for the sole purpose of generating income have

whereUparty | 13

restricted local inventory and inflated real estate markets in major cities such as New York and San Francisco. The fastest growing category of Airbnb rentals are managed by “super hosts”, accounting for almost 40% of its revenues. Locals claim they are being squeezed out of their own neighborhoods by commercial landlords. They argue that lodging taxes and regulations in cities like Chicago are often ignored by Airbnb hosts and Airbnb can no longer stick its head in the sand and say it’s the responsibility of the host to navigate the tax code. Some states like Vermont have found ways to work with Airbnb, while others like Texas have had more difficulty coming to terms. Airbnb faces taxes issues in almost all countries as a result of lack of transparency and compliance of hosts, and because municipalities depend on the taxes placed on hotels which often fund infrastructure in high tourism zones.

The Reality It’s certainly possible (probable?) that given Airbnb’s massive reach that these problems represent a very small percentage of Airbnb stays. The reality is that the company may be in the best position to address these issues, with the capital and a strong incentive to mitigate future incidents, including by posting safety tips, offering insurance to homeowners, and creating safety standards. Airbnb has made its support teams more accessible and enhanced training to handle time-sensitive situations when travelers call the company instead of the local authorities. It begs the question, do we as travelers really need the government as a chaperon when we stay in someone’s home? The fact is peer-to-peer home rentals are not going away. “There is going to be more people doing home-sharing tomorrow than there are today; there is going to be more the day after that,” said Chris Lehane, Airbnb’s head of global policy and public affairs. With the sharing economy growing every year and more people seeking creative ways to elevate their standard of living, at lower costs, companies like Airbnb will continue to prosper.

10 TOASTY TIPS FOR STAYING WARM IN COLD WEATHER Using these tips, you can stay warm no matter how frightful the weather outside gets.

6. Two words: Programmable thermostat.

1. Warm yourself first.

Another two words: Obvious, right? Stay toasty on schedule, so you never go home to a living room that's colder than outside. You can even do it with your smartphone.

It's easier to change your body temperature than room temperature, not to mention more eco-friendly. Instead of turning up the heat, put on another layer of clothing.

2. Wear a hat. Your mom may have said that you lose 80 percent of your body heat through your head, but that's not actually true. If you're otherwise clothed, you'll lose heat from any surface that's exposed. So put on your hat, even if you're inside.

3. Turn on the ceiling fan. Warm air rises to the ceiling. Run your fan on its lowest setting in a clockwise direction to push the warm air back down to where you can feel it.

4. Switch between hot and cold water in the shower. Hot showers immediately warm you up, but cold showers improve blood circulation between your skin and organs. Cold showers are also correlated with a stronger immune system.

5. Block drafts with a pool noodle. Keep heat in and cold out by cutting a pool noodle in half lengthwise, wrapping it in fabric, and sliding it under your door. It'll stay put all winter, and you can re-use it at the pool come summer. (But we recommend you spring for a new one.)

whereUparty | 17

7. Trick a locked thermostat. Not everyone has access to adjust the thermostat in their apartment or office building. If that's the case, you may need to outsmart the device by making it "think" the room is colder than it actually is. Putting ice near it often does the trick.

8. Dress your windows up in warmer clothes. If you're not wearing a tank top or going sleeveless, your windows shouldn't, either. Replace thin curtains with heavier wool or fleece drapes in the winter. But be sure to open them on sunny days for free heat.

9. Go ahead, bake all day. Using your oven heats up the whole house. You'll feel even cozier if you invite friends—and all their body heat—over to eat four dozen cookies.

10. Start composting. If you're already interested in composting, here's another reason to do it: The microbial breakdown of organic material produces heat. Some people use it to warm up showers and greenhouses, but even small-timers in studio apartments can feel a difference.

LIFE

NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS?

START EARLY BY RANDY MOORE

Human beings are lazy creatures who love to procrastinate. Procrastination is our favorite form of self-indulgence. We postpone important tasks until a later time because we feel that we should allow ourselves to remain comfortable in the present. These tasks tend to be tasks that, although they cannot be avoided, can be left to a later date.

a new habit requiring productivity or focus, it’s on New Year’s Day — the morning after New Year’s Eve. Unless you’re in your 60s or older, you’re going to be partying it up on NYE. You’re going to be drinking, possibly doing drugs, dancing, yelling, meeting random people and maybe even taking home one of those people, only to regret it the next morning.

The problem with procrastinating is that just as the due date doesn’t change, neither does our eagerness to complete the task. Thankfully, we aren’t complete idiots and understand that when something does need to get done, it actually needs to get done. So, we buckle down and force ourselves to cram in all necessary action right before meeting the finish line. The issue of procrastination makes itself evident when we postpone tasks that don’t have set-in-stone due dates, such as our New Year’s resolutions.

Regardless, whatever it is that you are doing on New Year’s Eve, even if it’s only staying up late and not getting enough sleep, the following morning is not a good time to initiate a change in your life. You will be, at the very least, sleep deprived. And you’re likely to also be hungover or still feeling the effects of whatever it was you took the night before. If you think you can wake up feeling like Satan just ravaged your body and stick to your resolution, you’re delusional.

Without A Need, There Is Rarely A Will

New Year’s resolutions are the worst for a couple of reasons. The first reason being that we never resolve to do the things that need to be done, but rather, those that we believe should be done. When it comes to resolutions, there are no deadlines. We are attempting to create a change for the sake of the change itself. Because we do not feel that we must stick to our resolutions, we tend to fall back on our old ways whenever we feel overcome by discomfort.

Our Resolutions Come With A Ridiculous Start Date

If there were ever a worse time to take on whereUparty | 25

If You Want To Change Any Aspect Of Your Life, Start When You’re Sober The trick to keeping your New Year’s resolution is to start several weeks early: at least two weeks prior to the festivities. Any sort of change you are trying to incite is going to be difficult because the change is going argue against the habits you have already grown accustomed to. We are creatures of habit; if you want to break old habits, you’re going to have to substitute them with new ones. Forcing newer, healthier habits into your life isn’t impossible, but it is difficult. Don’t wait until you have a splitting headache to try

and focus on your new life; start focusing on your resolution right now. Get a head start on your new year by creating a new you now. Focusing on your New Year’s resolutions and putting them into effect preemptively will allow for a much smoother transition. Give yourself time to adjust to the changes you wish to create when you aren’t caught up in the moment — when you have the concentration to muffle all the extra noise surrounding you. Start your New Year’s resolution during the old year and you won’t have as much difficulty sticking to it once the clock hits midnight. Set yourself up with an early start date and an end date. The point of your resolution isn’t to spend the entirety of the next year putting in the effort to keep your resolution. The New Year isn’t the year to change — it’s the year to be changed. Don’t wait to begin changing and then spend the remainder of the New Year “trying” to change. Adopt your resolution now and set a date for the completion of your transition — no more than six months. This will allow you to remain focused and refrain from losing your way. By summertime, you won’t have to be worried about changing because you will have already gone through the whole process of altering your habits. The best part? You’ll have the remainder of the year to simply live and enjoy the new you! And by the way, Happy New Year!!!

WINTER COCKTAIL RECIPES

BOOZY PUMPKIN WHITE HOT CHOCOLATE INGREDIENTS 1/2 cup white chocolate chips (or chopped) 2.5 cups milk (I used 2%) 1/4 cup pumpkin puree 1/4 tsp pumpkin pie spice 1 ounce Kahlua or 1/2 ounce Bourbon whipped cream and caramel for topping (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS In a saucepan over low-medium heat, melt the chocolate chips and 1/2 cup of the milk, whisking often (about 3 minutes). Once melted, add the rest of the milk, the pumpkin and the pumpkin pie spice and stir vigorously to incorporate. Pour a small amount of the hot chocolate into two serving glasses, add one ounce of Kahlua OR one-half ounce of bourbon (bourbon is much stronger in taste). Top off with hot chocolate, stir and then top with whipped cream, caramel sauce and more pumpkin pie spice (optional). NOTES * Use non-dairy milk and non-dairy white chocolate to make this recipe vegan friendly.
