THE GAME

BAT T L E F I E L D 4 Battlefield 4 is an action blockbuster that aims for unrivaled destruction. Fueled by Frostbite 3, Battlefield 4 allows you to demolish the buildings shielding your enemy. You will lead an assault from the back of a gun boat. Battlefield grants you the freedom to do more and be more while playing to your strengths and carving your own path to victory. Beyond its hallmark multiplayer, Battlefield 4 features an intense, dramatic character-driven campaign that starts with the evacuation of American VIPs from Shanghai and follows your squad’s struggle to find its way home. Change the landscape in real-time with interactive environments that react to your every move. Dominate land, air and sea with all-new, intense waterbased vehicular combat Battlefield’s multiplayer contains 3 playable factions; U.S., China and Russia and up to 64 players on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. A newly reintroduced “Commander Mode”, last seen in Battlefield 2142, gives one player an RTS-like view of the entire map and the ability to give orders to teammates. Also, the Commander can observe the battle through the eyes of the players on the battlefield, deploying vehicle and weapon drops to “keep the war machine going”, and order in missile strikes and such on hostile targets (as long as at least one friendly player can see the target). A spectator mode is included, enabling players to spectate others in first or third person, as well as use a free camera to pan around the map from any angle. The skyscraper in “Siege of Shanghai” as it collapses. These Levolution events alter the map in many ways, depending on “how [the players] affect the world, and the world affects [them] back.” On June 10, 2013, at E3, DICE featured the map “Siege of Shanghai”, pitting the People’s Liberation Army against the U.S. Marine Corps. The gameplay showcased Commander Mode; new weapons and vehicles; and the “Levolution” gameplay mechanic. The video displays the last of these at various points, including: a player destroying a support pillar to trap an enemy tank above it; and a large skyscraper (with an in-game objective on the top floor) collapsing in the center of

the map, kicking up a massive dust cloud throughout the map and bringing the objective closer to ground level. Levolution also includes effects such as shooting a fire extinguisher to fill the room with obscuring clouds, car alarms going off when stepped on, metal detectors going off once passed through, or cutting the power in a room to reduce others’ visibility. The maps included in the main game are “Siege of Shanghai, Paracel Storm, Zavod 311, Lancang Dam, Flood Zone, Rogue Transmission, Hainan Resort, Dawnbreaker, Operation Locker and Golmud Railway”. The game modes on offer include Battlefield’s Conquest, Domination and Rush; while adding two new game modes called “Obliteration and Defuse”, along with traditional game modes such as Team Deathmatch and Squad Deathmatch. The four kits from Battlefield 3 and other similar games are present with new enhancements and abilities. The Assault kit now must wait for defibrillator to recharge before reviving another player. The Engineer kit uses PDWs, and carbines are available to all kits. The support kit has access to the new remote mortar and the XM25 allowing for indirect suppressive fire. The Recon kit is now far more mobile and is able to equip carbines and C4. Sniping mechanics are also enhanced with the ability to zero in your sights (set an aiming distance), and equip more optics and accessories than previous Battlefield games. The Recon kit is still able to utilize the MAV, T-UGS, and the Radio Beacon. New vehicles have also been introduced. With the addition of the Chinese faction, new vehicles include the Type 99 MBT, the ZFB-05 Armored Car, and the Z-10W Attack Helicopter. Jets have also been rebalanced and put into two classes, “Attack” and “Stealth”. The Attack jets focus is mainly air to ground capabilities, while Stealth jets focus mainly on air to air combat. Another vehicle added in Battlefield 4 is the addition of the RCB and DV-

15 Interceptor attack boats, which function as heavily armed aquatic assault craft. Customization has also been heavily improved in Battlefield 4, with all new camos available for every gun. A new “adaptive” camo is also being introduced that can adapt the camo to the map being played without the player having to change camos every game. Camos can now be applied to Jets, Helicopters, and Tanks.

The 5 Winter Layering Fashion Essentials Every Woman Should Own

Must-Have Layering Piece: Skinny Jeans Choose a pair of skinny jeans in a goes-withanything color like black or dark blue and you’ll be in the clear. Running errands? Tuck them into a pair of boots. Lunch with the girls? Borrow a page from Ashley Madekwe’s style playbook and wear them with ballet flats and a leather jacket. And if you’re heading out for a night on the town, pointy-toe heels and a drapey top will be your go-to look.

Must-Have Layering Piece: A Cashmere Sweater Nothing says off-duty prep like Kristen Stewart’s crewneck cashmere sweater and blue oxford combination. Not your cup of tea? The wardrobe mainstay also goes with everything from skirts and printed trousers to leather pants and shorts.

3

Must-Have Layering Piece: A Chambray ButtonDown Sick of the same old white button-down? Sub in a chambray blouse and spice things up! Make like Emma Stone and do denim on denim with a pop of color for a modern version of the Texas tuxedo.

4

Must-Have Layering Piece: A Bright-Color Coat From October to March, your outerwear is the first thing that everyone sees, so why not make a statement? Olivia Palermo’s jacket adds a pop of color to an otherwise neutral-hue outfit.

5

Must-Have Layering Piece: A Sleeveless Shift Dress Naya Rivera’s flawlessly tailored version of this closet workhorse fits in at both the office and a cocktail party after work. Pair a shift dress with a bright bag and look-at-me pumps to complete the sophisticated outfit. g-vegasmagazine | 11

10 SPRING BREAK DO’S & DON’TS

www.coed.com

Spring Break is time to get away from school, responsibilities and the mundane. But while it is a time to let loose, there are some rules that should be followed that will help make your vacation safe, fun and keep you as happy and popular as Tequila in Mexico: DO NOT get arrested. Spring break is a time to have fun and let loose, but you can have fun and let loose without doing anything illegal. To help keep your activities legal, think of how angry your friends would be if they had to use their extra spring break money to bail you out of jail. So NOT cool. DO NOT wear a “wife beater” on the beach (or anywhere else for that matter). Those cheap Target tanks are only suitable for one thing: to be worn under another shirt. Never should you ever think you look like a stud walking down the beach with that thing on (unless of course, your name is “The Situation” and you’re dating a girl named “Snooki”). DO keep safety first. As boring as it is to think about, it is something that has to be remembered (if only to keep in the back of your mind). If you’re driving to your spring break destination, be sure to have your car checked to make sure it can go the distance without any trouble. Also, while you are on the road, be sure to switch out drivers so no one gets sleepy while driving. DO bring props, fun items, candy, crazy hats, outfits and anything else that’s bound to get you attention and ultimately create a fun and festive atmosphere. We recommend the Shot Bong! It’s always a hit – especially around the pool. Expect to have people lining up to try it. DO NOT have sex in the sand! It’ll be like having sex with sandpaper. Probably not the sensation you would enjoy. Also, it’ll be extremely hard to wash the sand out of all your um, nooks and crannies.

g-vegasmagazine | 17

DO NOT have sex in a hot tub. The chemicals found in hot tubs can cause infections and might cause infertility problems later in life and can burn your uh, most personal spots (OUCH!).

DO NOT sunbathe in the nude. First of all it’s illegal in a lot of places and secondly there’s just certain places on the body that just don’t need to be suntanned. That being said, when you are out in the sun (and if you are lucky enough to be on a nude beach) make sure to put on plenty of sunscreen. Remember, there’s just nothing worse than being away on vacation and feeling the burn in some uh, uncomfortable places. OUCH! DON’T forget the sunscreen!! DO NOT do anything that you wouldn’t normally do back on campus. You may feel that spring break is a time to toss all inhibitions out the window on the plane ride down to Cancun , but just because you’re in a different area code or country, doesn’t mean you should lower your standards. (Is earning a free t-shirt from “Guys Gone Wild“ really worth it??) Also, remember that a mistake made can still haunt you back home, like having unprotected sex. So don’t forget the condoms!! DO NOT drink to excess. Yes, spring break is all about party, party, party but they weren’t joking when they say, “one tequila, two tequila, three tequila – floor.” Do you really want to spend 2 days in bed with the hangover from hell?! And if you decide that you are going to go overboard, at least drink quality tequila. DO get proper training from experts before taking part in athletic or skilled activities like surfing, water-skiing, and scuba diving. DO have fun. You only get to be a college student once so enjoy it while you can.

DON’T forget the sunscreen!!

B.A.A.B.S Boutique & Beauty Bar BY BRIAN GOINGS Greenville, there is a new bar in town and this one, unlike the others, will leave you feeling and looking like a million bucks. You don’t have to worry about a DD or a hangover the next day either. What bar is this, I’m talking about the B.A.A.B.S Boutique & Beauty Bar on 3110 S. Evans Street Suite F. The bar opened in July of 2013 but had it’s grand opening this past December. I got a chance to look at the vibrant place and speak with the founder and owner of this bar and I must say that everything about it is classy and unique. First B.A.A.B.S stands for Blessed And Anointed Beauty Services. They offer skin care and makeup products for people who can’t wear the everyday over the counter make up products. They offer services for both men and women. Men in make up? Well there are a few who might but their skin care services are geared to help those who suffer from razor bumps and the like. Necia Boston, the founder and Owner of B.A.A.B.S, created the Beauty Bar when she herself had trouble wearing make up products and later having to get rid of them because of allergic reactions. She notes that many products don’t have to tell you EVERY ingredient they use in their products and that can become harmful to people such as herself who is allergic to soy made products. Her experiences working with other cosmetic companies also allowed her to provide services that she could not give while she was working with them. So whenever you go to the Beauty Bar she or her staff will make sure that they get to know your needs personally so that they can provide you with their best services. They will also be able to tell you what EXACTLY is in their products. B.A.A.B.S provide services for special occasions such as Proms, Weddings, and Self Portraits/Glamour shots and if you need them at your event, they do make house calls. They also provide waxing and eyelash services and even will do a little personal shopping if you want them too. For the ladies who feel they need makeup tips and how to get that nice smoky eye or a natural look…maybe even a stronger jaw line; they will teach you with their make up classes. The building itself can be used for private parties as well and NO, it doesn’t necessarily have to be a spa or make up party. This month they are providing facials so make sure you come by and get one!! Necia is a resident of Greenville and attended ECU. She believes in the Golden Rule of doing onto others as you would have them do onto you. She believes in treating people with love and kindness and doesn’t mind educating her clients on what is best for them. She gives all of this as her reason for her success thus far. Make sure you go check them out and be prepared to be and feel transformed!! g-vegasmagazine | 19

SOUND

Feels Like Success! BY CHRISTINA BOGART

I remember the day I met Parmalee. I won tickets to a Christmas concert with Natasha Beddingfield and Parmalee was one of the opening bands. That was nearly 12 years ago. I also remember a day and time when the only way I could hear them on my radio was from a burned cd the guys had made or on my ipod. and trust me I listened to them ALOT. I spent the majority of my 20s following their climb to the top. Now I can just turn on any country station, CMT or go to youtube which ONLY brings up 38,500 results. I went from Fan to Friend to Family. I have driven in a sudden blizzard in the middle of the night to bring Josh piano wires they left behind (8 hours away btw… it took 14 in the snow). One year for thanksgiving I drove from Greenville to Burlington back to Greenville worked that day, drove to Charlotte that night and back just to leave in the morning to go to Emerald isle. I believed in them. I always knew one day their time would come and it finally has. I felt as though if I missed a single show I would miss the moment they took off. Hailing from Parmele, NC, a Small Town in Martin County. It all began in a barn eventually earning the name Studio B. The band – consisting of brothers Matt Thomas (vocals, guitar) and Scott Thomas (drums), cousin Barry Knox(bass) and lifelong friend Josh McSwain (guitar) playing a brand of power chord country that matches a rugged Southern Rock with alot of soul. “Feels Like Carolina” was Released Dec 10, 2013 and within weeks the Single had already gone GOLD. Parmalee formed in the mid’00s Prior to being signed to Stoney Creek Records in Nashville, TN they did have plenty of success on their own releasing an EP, “Complicated,” with ESPN and NASCAR picking up its hit single “gasoline” amongst other many successes. Parmalee’s arrival to Nashville was not an easy one. The delay allowed the groundbreaking sounds of artists such as Jason Aldean to pave the way for the worlds of country radio and Parmalee’s brand of music to collide into a new modern sound. The band suffered a major set back not too long before their big break, Scott had a near fatal accident that nearly costs him his life and surely would have been the end of Parmalee. But they never gave up and with the support and love of all their fans, friends, family and a series of benefits put on by local venues and bands featuring some old Gvegas familar names such as Irvine, Assembly Required, Stairwell, Brad Benson, Shiloh, Stretch, Barefoot Wade, and more Scott was able to make a full recovery and go on to the fame they have rightfully earned today. Gvegas Magazine even had the privilege of Barry Knox and Studio B producing our Gvegas Jams Christmas Cd recorded in the infamous studio near downtown Greenville, NC. If you have ever seen them live, had a copy of anything they were on or just got the meet the guys, I can almost promise the same answer from anyone. They guys are genuine, humble and talented. And the newest re-

lease only furthers my point! The first song when you put the cd in is just jam packed full of energy “Musta Had A Good Time” Is a true reflection of just how Much fun these guys have and will always be. The upbeat sounds of “Dance” “Move” and “Day drinking” showcase just how amazing Matt Thomas’s vocals are. However “Carolina” will always have a special place in my heart. I was actually at the very first live performance they ever did of it, and I’m pretty sure It was the moment I realized this is it.. These guys are going to make it. And this isn’t the first time Carolina has been in the country scene Benton Blount did a major market radio tour with the song. All the tracks are amazing on this album. It’s a hit from beginning to end. Im not just saying that as a fan but from reading other reviews online. Of course you have your few Critics that say it’s nothing special, heard it all before but they are entitled to their own opinion. You could not have the good without the bad. Don’t take my word. I think you should check it out for yourself! You can purchase it at any retail store, on itunes as well as many other sources. You can keep up with the latest News tour dates and much more at www. The BIG Something LIVE MUSIC IN G-VEGAS

BY BAREFOOT WADE

Last night I got back home in Greenville from a 5 hour roadtrip. My plans for the remainder of the evening were simple; make spaghetti and listen to the new album by The BIG Something. It was available for a free stream on their website so natuarly I had to take full advantage of this oppourtunity. If you’ve read my past articles, then you clearly know that I am a fan of this Burlington based band and I was anxious to hear their third album. If this is your first time hearing about The BIG Something, they are a 6 piece band whose sound encompases a variety of musical styles and expressions. Their music is a blend of blistering (but harmonizing) rock guitar solos on top of a funky rythym and brass section that completes it self with some pyschedelic keyboard sounds which would make Pink Floyd proud. Their newlys released self titled album is the studio follow up to the 2010 release of Stories from the Middle of Nowhere. They also have a live album entitled Live From Uranus. Based on that title alone, you can tell they have a sense of humor. Everytime I see this band I am amazed by how full and energetic they are when performing. This self titled studio album captures the intensity and magnetic flow of their live sound and includes some great songwriting and excellent prodution. I can honestly

g-vegasmagazine | 23

say that there is not a weak song on this 12 track album. My favorites though include “Undertow”, “Vibrations” and “The Curse of Julia Brown”. Lucky for all you Greenville people, they will be coming to Peasants Pub on Friday, January 17. However, It is with great sorrow that I will not be able to attend...for I’m doing a show in West Virginia on that night and will sadly miss the epic-ness that the BIG Something will undoubtedly deliver. 7 PEOPLE YOU SHOULD SOCIALIZE WITH IN COLLEGE THE JOCK - Hanging around The Jock is as good for your health as eating salads and drinking water. Along with maybe a few free tickets and the heads up on all the big parties, The Jocks’ overall healthy living is something you’ll want to pick up. So get off your lazy butt and do a little exercising with them. Being around their constant vigor to succeed might rub off on you. THE GREEK - All the parties The Jock doesn’t know about, The Greek does. If someone’s having a party for their Grandmas 80th birthday and they’re getting a keg, The Greek can sniff it out like a bloodhound would an escaped convict. Another useful trait of The Greek is that they usually know who the easiest professors are from passed down knowledge by their “Elder Greekers”. So if you’re looking for an easy “A”, The Greek can typically point you in the right direction. THE FOREIGNER - To bring in a fresh perspective on your life, The Foreigner is definitely worth having around. That status quo American mindset of yours is due a culture shake-up right about this time in your life. It’s certainly worth experiencing now when your mind is still young and malleable, than when you’re old and less receptive to others’ ideas. THE PROFESSOR - It should go without saying that you should talk to your professor’s everyday. Even if it’s just about something random, whatever you can spark up a conversation about works. All you’re wanting is to at least have some sort of dialog and recognition between the two of you. Because when you come up asking to make

up that test you missed because you overslept, your chances of being allowed to do so will greatly increase if they know your name. THE HIPPIE - There is definitely nothing wrong with throwing a little love in the picture. If The Professor is someone to make you stay on task, The Hippie is the complete polar opposite. They’re only mission in life is to have fun and maybe partake in a certain “Herbal Cigarette” (as Craig Ferguson likes to call them). Now, I neither partake nor condone in such “Herbal Cigarette” activities, but I do agree with the laid-back lifestyle. While having a great task oriented mindset at college is good, having fun is just important. The message of “living life to the fullest” has become sort of a cliché, but still needs not be forgotten when at college. THE NERD - Everyone needs their very own personal Nerd. Someone to help do your homework when you’re feeling lazy, or stand in for you on a test you didn’t study for. Just say you’ll buy them the new Halo, WOW or “Dungeons and Dragons” if they ace it, and you’ve got them under your thumb forever. THE ADVISOR - Think of your college Advisor as your native guide, holding the lamp for you as you try to escape the darkness of a deep cave. They’re there to help you because they know what lies in the path ahead. Listen to their advice and I assure you the likelihood of your college survival will significantly increase. | GV

MUSIC

Beyonce`, in the defense of music and lyrical content. Many people are talking about the album of albums for the year 2013 and I must admit this Beyonce` self titled album hits the mark. It is for the grown and sexy... and sexual beasts. This is not your typical bump and grind then bring it back as if nothing is going to happen album. This is the growth album that has people, fans and not, talking. It sparks a little sexual side, a little rebellious side, and brings you back to reality. For instance, “Blow,” and “Rocket,”and “Partition” has got to be the songs that will feed the sexual appetite. Then you have songs like “Heaven,” and “Blue,” that shows you the other type of love that mothers and friends will enjoy. She, as always, have her female empowering songs like “Flawless,””Pretty,” and “No Angel.” She has a few more that sparks your fantasy and makes you want to get on the floor and just move. The biggest problem is people misunderstanding the artistic eye. You saw this with Madonna, Tupac and how can we forget most recent, Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines!!” Whenever people stop seeing the artistic eye in lyrical content it causes an unnecessary uproar. You get people protesting for failing to see or relate to what is being said. It’s like people taking your words out of context and justify why they need to treat you like Hester Prynne or the people from “The Crucible.” But take all of your great poets and really peep into their poetical expressions and you can find almost a double meaning to it all if you really look for it. I’m not a Bey-hive fan of Beyonce` but I will say that you can’t deny great music whenever you hear it. This woman pours a lot of herself into this album and that is

g-vegasmagazine | 29

BY BRIAN GOINGS

what people want. This is the side that she has allowed us to see without Paparazzi interfering with her life. She explores her musical being and it shows with every album and video that she makes. It is definitely different than a lot of so called musicians who recycle music and lyrics and comes up with nothing new to impress even the smallest part of your mental psyche. It is obvious at this point in time that no matter what people say about Beyonce`, or any other singer, that no matter what you do...it will only give the gas to go on longer. People should stop trying to bring the success of others down by trash talking them and live their own lives. The next time you hear someone trash talking about any artist’s work (lyrical content that is) ask them if they have heard more than two lines out of a bar. If not tell them to listen to the entire song before passing judgement. And if you are wondering if you should buy the album... just listen to a few clips and you can determine that for yourself. I was convinced and I don’t mind the investment at all.
