FOURTH OF JULY FUN

THE LIFE

Did you know… • The major objection to being ruled by Britain was taxation without representation. The colonists had no say in the decisions of English Parliament. • In May, 1776, after nearly a year of trying to resolve their differences with England, the colonies sent delegates to the Second Continental Congress. Finally, in June, admitting that their efforts were hopeless; a committee was formed to compose the formal Declaration of Independence. Headed by Thomas Jefferson, the committee also included John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Philip Livingston and Roger Sherman. On June 28, 1776, Thomas Jefferson presented the first draft of the declaration to Congress. • Betsy Ross, according to legend, sewed the first American flag in May or June 1776, as commissioned by the Congressional Committee • Independence Day was first celebrated in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776 • The Liberty Bell sounded from the tower of Independence Hall on July 8, 1776, summoning citizens to gather for the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence by Colonel John Nixon. • June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress, looking to promote national pride and unity, adopted the national flag. “Resolved: that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.” • The word ‘patriotism’ comes from the Latin patria, which means ‘homeland’ or ‘fatherland.’

• The first public Fourth of July event at the White House occurred in 1804. • Before cars ruled the roadway, the Fourth of July was traditionally the most miserable day of the year for horses, tormented by all the noise and by the boys and girls who threw firecrackers at them. • The first Independence Day celebration west of the Mississippi occurred at Independence Creek and was celebrated by Lewis and Clark in 1805. • On June 24, 1826, Thomas Jefferson sent a letter to Roger C. Weightman, declining an invitation to come to Washington, D.C., to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. It was the last letter that Jefferson, who was gravely ill, ever wrote. • The 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence did not sign at the same time, nor did they sign on July 4, 1776. The official event occurred on August 2, 1776, when 50 men signed it. • The names of the signers of the Declaration of Independence were withheld from the public for more than six months to protect the signers. If independence had not been achieved, the treasonable act of the signers would have, by law, resulted in their deaths. • The origin of Uncle Sam probably began in 1812, when Samuel Wilson was a meat packer who provided meat to the US Army. The meat shipments were stamped with the initials, U.S. Someone joked that the initials stood for “Uncle Sam”. This joke eventually led to the idea of Uncle Sam symbolizing the United States government • In 1941, Congress declared 4th of July a federal legal holiday. It is one of the few federal holidays that have not been moved to the nearest Friday or Monday http://www.purpletrail.com/partytrail/featured_fourth_of_july/4th_ of_july_history_trivia_and_facts

THE TASTE

The Fourth of July is one of the biggest and most important holidays in the U.S.A., as it should be. What also comes along with this monumental holiday is the hottest month of the year but no need to fear, with these amazing recipes you can beat the heat and enjoy a treat all month long!

Love, Tay MOM’S STRAWBERRY PIE What you will need: -

3 pounds hulled, fresh strawberries (It’s about two quarts.) 1 cup sugar 4 TBS cornstarch Whipped cream to your desire (I usually whip up a pint.)

Directions:

• Bake a deep, 9” pie shell with what ever your favorite recipe. Just make sure you brush the bottom and sides of the crust with beaten egg in the last minute of baking. Cool to room temp. • Pick out 16 - 20 of the choicest berries and set aside. Mash remaining berries in a large bowl with a pastry blender until juice flows freely. Combine sugar and cornstarch in a separate bowl, mix well to ensure no cornstarch clumps remain (VERY important). • Add berries and sugar and starch mixture to a large 3-4 qt pot and bring to a boil, stirring frequently. Simmer for 10 minutes, continuing to frequently stir (I use a spatula to get down to the bottom). • Arrange remaining berries in pie shell, pour berry mixture over this. Cool to room temp then place in fridge; overnight works best as this gives the flavors opportunity to marry. Serve with plenty of whipped cream. Enjoy!

B.L.T. PASTA SALAD What you will need: -1 (7 ounce) package rotini pasta noodles (cooked and drained) -8 slices bacon (cooked until crispy and crumbled) -1 cup mayonnaise (or salad dressing) -¼ cup lemon juice concentrate -2 teaspoons sugar -2 teaspoons chicken flavored instant bouillon -1 large tomato (seeded and chopped) -¼ cup green onions (sliced) -4 cups lettuce (thinly sliced)

Directions:

• In a small bowl combine mayonnaise, lemon juice, chicken flavor instant bouillon, and sugar. Mix well until smooth • In a serving bowl add noodles, bacon, tomato, and green onions, Toss with dressing. Stir in lettuce right before serving (Makes 10 Servings)

Ya’ll Enjoy and Check me out next month for some back to school quick snack ideas! g-vegasmagazine | 3

ROCK

THESOUND LIFE THE

REPORT Summer is officially here!

It’s time for the beach, pool parties, hot girls in bikinis, guys in speedos (that’s what you want, right ladies?). Along with summer comes The X’s Surf & Turf, and this year it was, yet again, a huge success. As of the printing of this article on five days remain until the winner is announced and claims possession of the awesome X Custom Surfboard, skate deck, NFL themed couch, iPad and more. We’ve been all over ENC qualifying people for a chance at this prize package of awesome. I’m sure some of you reading this are sad you missed your chance. Well, don’t worry. The X has more great stuff coming your way this summer. If you are a Batman fan looking forward to “The Dark Knight Rises” – prepare yourself. We have something awesome for you! That’s all I can say right now, but trust me it’s going to be amazing. On the music front get ready for a 90s alternative summer. Everclear is back with a new album “Invisible Stars.” If you want to go on a nostalgic trip back to the 90s catch Everclear on the Summerland Tour with Sugar Ray, Lit, Gin Blossoms, and Marcy Playground (July 14th at Raleigh Amphitheater). Speaking of 90s alt bands, The Offspring has a new album out now with “Days Go By.” This looks like it’s going to be a fun album from these Cali boys, although the track Cruising California (Bumpin’ In My Trunk) sounds more like a song written for a crossed eyed pop princess than an original Offspring tune. If it’s anywhere close to the caliber of 2008’s “Rise and Fall, Rage

g-vegasmagazine | 5

and Grace” I’ll be adding the album to my collection (despite one bad song). July brings two albums our way from P.O.D. and Cypress Hill. P.O.D.’s “Murdered Love” (July 10th). You can hear the first single from the album, Lost In Forever, on 99.5 The X. This highly anticipated album features a fun collaboration between P.O.D. and Sen Dog from Cypress Hill on the track West Coast Rock Steady. Cypress Hill’s new album “Cypress Hill X Rusko (EP)” is definitely an interesting venture for the band. I never thought I would hear Cypress Hill with a heavy dubstep groove. It’s wild and weird! This collaboration with dubstep producer Rusko is worth a listen. The album is available now for download and on CD and vinyl July 17th. Enjoy your summer and keep rockin’ 99.5 The X!

GUYHARVEYAPPAREL Remember the days

when your Dad would head down to the coast rocking a shirt with random fish on it (tucked in of course), khaki shorts, and some sandals that should be used for an activity way more extreme than just a night at the Sanitary? Well thankfully – coastal apparel has come a LONG ways from the days of old….these aren’t your Dad’s fishing shirts. With the likes of Guy Harvey, NC based Fathom Offshore, Pelagic, Calcutta, and Salt Life - those under 50 can wear apparel to support Greenville’s second love…fishing (football being #1)! Guy Harvey is a marine artist who has taken his talents with the paint brush and lending them to a lineup of t-shirts, shorts, sweatshirts, and performance apparel. His prints have been featured worldwide to aid in coastal conservation – what does this mean to you? You can represent your love for the water in about any color or fish combo you can possibly imagine – Guy Harvey has something for everyone. ECU is only 1 of 8 schools nationwide that Guy himself has designed a print for. Our purple and gold pride has not gone unnoticed and can be found on his collegiate shirt featuring Pee-Dee (Overton’s – $19.99). My personal favorite is the ‘Pirate Shark 4’ tee – it looks just like a pirate ship that once roamed our waters! Ladies are also well outfitted in Guy’s ever expanding lineup of

g-vegasmagazine | 9

women’s shirts – this summer you can expect even better colors on some of his most popular styles. I recommend the mint or yellow in either the ‘Salfish Dash’ or ‘Bull Dolphin’ Tees. Mint is the must have color for the summer. Fathom Offshore has really ramped up their line this season and Overton’s is pumped to be the exclusive Greenville dealer. One of the owners is a former pirate! Fathom has an extensive line of lures guaranteed to help just about anyone hook up. Their offerings of tees have some mighty impressive graphics this year pushing them ahead of other fishing brands. The ‘In Search’ tee is a fresh look on the ol’ lighthouse, marlin, boat graphic. Ladies’ ‘Simply Sailing’ and ‘Sun Chaser’ are the best looking women’s shirts I’ve seen in a while. The shirts combine fun colors with sleek, new graphics. 2012 is the first year Fathom has offered a performance shirt – coming in with a UPF rating of 50 it provides excellent sun protection for a long day while keeping you cool with wick moisture management. Pelagic and Calcutta have both brought their A games this season. Pelagic hails from the west coast but is finally gaining steam here in the east with their OWS series of insane images fixated on killer color combos. I love their use of non-traditional coastal colors such as kelly green and royal blue which is a fresh way to do a marine shirt. Calcutta has been

great in getting behind their Pirates with a purple and gold color combo which is a perfect marriage since Calcutta’s mascot is a skull and crossbones (it’s like they are speaking to us!). Check out Calcutta’s new logo “Pirate In The Blood, Fishing In The Soul”. Calcutta must have a sweet spot for ECU – if they know what’s good for them! Don’t miss these must haves this season.

E3 2012: Wii...Who?

By Shamar Roundtree

THE GAME

This year, E3 was mega hyped with rumors of Next gen con-

soles PS4 and Xbox 720, games we have been waiting for over the past 5 or 6 years for and gaming’s next big thing as a whole. We did not get any of that this year, but there were only a few surprises and one big…. misunderstanding. The WiiU. That is what I want to clear up here. Before the Wii was shown at E3, Nintendo let everyone see the console itself first, then the Wiimote which introduced us to motion gaming. This helped let people know that this was a NEW Nintendo system, plus it looked nothing like the Gamecube ether. Fast forward to the E3 of this year and Nintendo seem to have for gotten everything they did before. The problem here is that almost everyone who is not game savvy (even some that are) can’t tell that is not an add-on to the Wii but a whole new system. The WiiU console, shown in the picture, looks a lot like the Wii that we have now. However, don’t let that fool you. No one quite knows just how powerful it is, but it can do PS3 and 360 quality graphics easy. We won’t know how much it can be pushed until around the time a new system come out. This is where Nintendo tripped up everyone. The WiiU Game Pad was shown off a lot….so much so that they kind of forgot to show the system it was playing. At the time Nintendo demoed games that looked like they came from the Wii, making people think that this was for the old system. The only game at the time that looked next Gen was The Legend of Zelda. Needless to say with the system coming this year, this is a bad thing for Nintendo to have people confused about what they’re buying or what to buy. The thing that does not help is the backwards compatibility; sure it’s awesome that you can play all of your old Wii games on it, but this means almost all of your old stuff works with it as well, making it hard for people who don’t know about games to buy one. This may not have been such a big deal if Nintendo did not name it as they did (or make it

look the way it does). Trying to both keep the new “non-gamers” and win back the hardcore may not work… Speaking of the hardcore gamers, Nintendo is offering us one more way to play our games that will seem way more….familiar. The WiiU Pro controller was made for all the gamers who never liked the idea the Wiimote. From the picture we can see that playing games like Super Smash Bros. and Call of Duty will be much easier and feel much better. Nintendo is trying to please two groups of people: the people who never played games before in there life’s that tried the Wii once and never picked it up again, and the people who grew up with them and don’t like the way they have come to do things. Now it may be hard to win ether one of them back, but being one that grew up with them, I’m willing to give them a chance as this plays out. But Nintendo get it together…If still don’t see it, The WiiU is Nintendo’s Next Gen Console.

NBA FUTURE DRAFT PICKS As we all know, the NBA season is over, with King LeBron and the Miami heat winning it all over the young but talented Oklahoma City Thunder. But let’s not get into that and let’s talk about the future stars of the league that will be drafted. Here, I will talk about who I think will be the studs of the class and wont quite make it in the league. 1. Harrison Barnes - Here is a player that everyone is slumping on ever since he came into college. This man averaged 17 points a game last year, while playing with 3 other first round picks. He showed his flashes of greatness at times and I really do believe he will be a star on the next level. His game should translate to the next level and with the improvement of his jumper, rebounding, and ability to drive; he should be able to score some points. 2. Perry Jones – I just have a feeling that Perry will grow into his role in the NBA, instead of being a PF in college. He will probably move to the 3 position and with his length and stature, he could grow into a great player for this draft. 3. Damian Lillard – He has all the potential to be the great point guard out of this draft, even with Kendall Marshall in the same draft. He can score and simply fill up the stat sheet. Whoever gets him on his team, will want to run their offense through him, as he can build on his assists along with score the basket. Other mentionable players that could make a splash onto the big screen are Bradley Beal, Royce White, and Moe Harkless. Now, on the other hand, there are always those players that just don’t seem to translate into the NBA as well as they were projected. Here are a few players that I just don’t think will work on the next level. 1. Marquis Teague – Don’t get me wrong, I think he will be a good backup point guard, but I just don’t see the ability to create on his own and just seems to be too young at this time to enter the draft, which in the future will affect him mentally and physically.

g-vegasmagazine | 17

By Patrick O’brien

THE GAME

2. Meyers Leonard – He has the body, the structure, the strength, and ability to be a presence in the NBA, I just think his immaturity will get to him and his ability will not translate into the NBA and will never be someone other than a player that averages 5 points a game and comes off the bench. 3. Jeremy Lamb – he is a decent player but never really translated into the player he was supposed to be without Kemba Walker. His stature is very thin and he seemed to struggle last year on a decent UConn team that never seemed to get it going. He will struggle at first and will never fit in, unless he can become more of a point guard and run the team. The other players that will struggle at first are Austin Rivers, Draymond Green, Andre Drummond, and John Henson. However, this is why I am not a GM and have to make these tough decisions. There are always those special players that translate better in the NBA, but the NBA draft is a gamble and we shall see who comes out on top this year.
