THE LIFE

ART AVENUE By: Kara McGinley

The Art Avenue in downtown Greenville offers artists a place to work, sell, and showcase their art. The Avenue is managed by devoted volunteers who share the common goal of bringing more culture to Greenville. I spoke with Claire Edwards, a member of The Art Avenue board, about the events and ambitions they have. “We want to offer arts an entertainment. Something cultural that people want to be a part of.” With these hopes in mind, The Avenue offers more events than just art showcases. “We’ve had many different activities here. We’ve had com-

work for their portfolios.” The Art Avenue gives graduating students a transition between ECU and the real world. Ran strictly by volunteers, Art Avenue set up a membership program for donations. By becoming a member, your donations will support Art Avenue in progressing their goals and increasing the art scene in Greenville. They will be holding a membership social on May 5th, 2013 at 5pm for interested and current members. “We’re trying to get people to know what we’re doing. To spread the word. We really need this art incubator. We want to enhance downtown with culture and arts and something for everyone.” The Art Avenue is revitalizing downtown Greenville one event at a time. Upcoming events are on:

edy shows, poetry readings, photo booths, installation pieces, and we plan on doing even more.” The Art Avenue is open every first Friday for ArtWalk. They have spaces available for artists to showcase their work and studio space for them to work in. “The idea is that we have event rental space in the front and studio space in the back. We also offer professional documentation of artist’s

GVM THE GAME

G-VEGAS # 1 IN THE REGION

By: Stefan Haus

After a close 2-1 victory against Eagles and another hard-earned 2-0 success against Portugal, G-Vegas once again climbed the ladder of success and currently leads PGSA league, the local chapter of the U.S. soccer association. Both games were close calls. Even though G-Vegas dominated Eagles and Portugal for the most part, both teams were not without chances and got close to tying the game several times. G-Vegas athlete Chantal Beijersbergen said: “even though the games were close, G-Vegas was the better team on both occasions and deserved to win the games.” The team’s leadership pointed out that it is “exactly these kinds of games, the ones that are close and tough, that you need to win in order to be successful. It is simple math: you score more goals, you win the game.” You can support our very own soccer team by coming out to the games on Sundays. Check out the schedule at http://www.pgsasoccer. com/adult.asp and look at Google maps for the exact location of the PGSA Soccer Complex (Hwy 43 South; about 10 minutes from The Bellamy).

Meanwhile, our pursuit of a good cause continues and is approaching its final phase. With great support from G-Vegas Magazine and several local sponsors, G-Vegas Soccer’s fund-raiser for “Love For Larue” is becoming a full success. “Love For Larue” is a campaign to raise funds and awareness for a local three year old girl whose life took a hard hit last Christmas when she was diagnosed with lymphocytic leukemia. Despite the tragic diagnosis, there is reason to be hopeful. According to Larue’s dad Jason, Larue is “responding to treatment very well with few side effects. Beginning in May and continuing in June, she will begin a more intense [medical] phase, which will require more frequent trips to the hospital.” Here is how you can help: Besides coming out to support G-Vegas Soccer on Sundays, you can show up to our Sponsored Bike Ride on May 4th. We will meet at Babits Bikes at 1322 E 10th Street, tour the Greenway, raise awareness, and most importantly: raise funds. You will

have the opportunity to donate, buy t-shirts, hang out with the G-Vegas crew and the soccer team, and enjoy the day while helping Larue’s cause. This event will close our fundraiser for now as we plan on handing over a check to Larue’s parents within the next few weeks. Charity starts at the local level neighbors helping neighbors so to speak. Don’t be a stranger. Be a neighbor.

A special thank you goes out to the sponsors of Love for Larue:

WHAT TO DO IN G-VEGAS

By: Barefoot Wade

It’s late Sunday afternoon and I awake blissfully hung over in Greenville. I say “blissfully hung over” because even though I’m feeling the wear and tear on my body from the weekend festivities, I feel great about all the fun I just had! To quickly sum it up; it was 3 days of good fun, good music, good people, and late night parties that only ended because the sun came up. Because of this over indulgence, this is bound to be a short and to the point article; for the couch and some Willie Nelson albums are calling my name.

phrey’s McGee. They also host their own festival each year. Check out www.themantras. com for more info.

also host blues night every Tuesday at A.J. McMurphy’s so you can even swing out there and jam with him.

Friday May 3, I’m doing an early evening show at Tiebreakers. I’m playing from 6-9 with no cover charge so come get some dinner, have a drink and hear some tunes before I disappear to the beach for the summer. Conveniently, Capital G is playing across the street at LIVE starting around 10 so that will make for a fun after party destination.

On Thursday May 2, a jam band known as The Mantras will be coming to Peasant’s Pub. This is a tight and well established jam band from Greensboro with a sound that energetically blends funk, rock and jazz in a way that will make you dance till last call. They just released their fourth album and completed an East Coast tour with Um-

Thursday May 9, Downtown Funk will be playing at Peasant’s Pub. They just played Pirate Fest though sadly I missed it.

Friday May 31, Mac and Juice are playing up at the LIVE bar as well. These guys also have long roots in Greenville and they are a regular on the festival scene. Your Greenville experience is not complete until you’ve seen these guys at least once and LIVE has the biggest stage in town. If you haven’t made it on that side of town yet, LIVE is the bar located on the corner of Charles and Firetower…they too have a good open mic night on Thursday’s.

Friday May 17, David Dixon Trio will be playing at LIVE. Dave has been consistently playing around here for years so you are probably already familiar with his music. He

Also Kayla Grady plays every Sunday at 7pm at A.J. McMurphy’s and with this last bit of information, I bid you adieu until next month.

THE LIFE

HOW ARE YOU TRAVELLING

By: Brian Goings

School is out, you’ve graduated or you may just have a summer ahead of you until school starts again. That means you have at least 90 days to do what you want. Where will you go? Will you stay in the Green City or will you venture out into the world? That is what a lot of people think about but I’ve learned that the best thing to do is just...well... do it. You say that you have bills and other obligations but those things will always be there and the time that you could have lived a little longer will not. I’m not sure if you are aware of the newest best thing to the traveling industry but I tell you it’s something that you do not want to miss out on. It’s called World Ventures and it truly is what it says it is...world ventures. World ventures operate on a word of mouth presentation that shows you how to live a little

g-vegasmagazine | 19

by traveling and if you are interested, how to make money while traveling. Now when I first was introduced to the company I thought to myself what do have to sell? The answer nothing. You can simply join and get up to hundreds of dollars of discounts to anywhere in the world. Where else can you find a 4nigh 3 day cruise for $69... every month? That is just the start. The company has set itself up so much that they have a policy that says if you were to tell at least four people about the company and they join that your monthly fees will be waived off permanently. So whats the catch? There is none. You simply just join or you don’t join. I think the best thing I have seen is that two friends

of mine have gone literally from the bottom to the top with their finances. They both are now driving around in BMW’s that they did not have to pay for and one has bought his dream house and all in the name of traveling. So again I ask you. How are you traveling? Are you traveling for a season or do you want to travel for a lifetime. Do you live to travel or do you live to work? Call me optimistic but I believe this to be one of the best investments that anyone can invest in. Shout out to team S.W.A.G.G in Greenville!! Check this out http://briangoings.worldventures.biz/#
