SOUND
Handsome Foxes/ Unifier: Split Record BY NATHAN BLACK As the state of punk and hardcore bands (emo) are in either a constant loop to find what element sets themselves apart, while still being accessible, or scraping previous projects for dubstep remixes--one would have to begin to consider, where did all the deep passion of this genre go? So it goes with all art forms that appear exhausted, it is more or less not exhausted, but subverted by a lack of drive, that often can be found again amongst those still unheard artists pressing with complete fervor to find their place. Many times, not always, it can be found by those artists that work with diligence to see their product heard rather than merely sold. Comprised of long standing veterans of this mantra, Unifier (previously known as Future Ghosts) and Handsome Foxes have released their split EP album, F+U, featuring three songs from each group. These three tracks strike on the highlights of each of the bands strengths and furious ruminations. Handsome Foxes helps crystallize such rage filled moments with songs like You Really Dicked Yourself Into This One and Green Skirt Ambition. The mounting distorted harmony on Green Skirt grips that soulful sickness from loneliness. The heavy wails release at the climax with Collins singing “you’re so sweet/to keep my head above the water”. The rolling thunder of drums from Shapiro on Life Rafts mixed with reverb make real waves that paint the uneasy ocean consuming everything. The heat of Alex Jean’s voice can almost be felt through the speakers as each rancorous scream plays the opposite end of Collin’s introvert voice--all reminiscent of Planes Mistaken For Stars, Mineral, Cursive, Boys Night Out and others. Handsome Foxes, much like their name, take their sound seriously and execute with a confidence that can only come from age and tempered focus. Unifier brings up the rear, and does not fail to pick up where Life Raft left off making this EP all the more memorable. Their poppy, soothing 90s alt rock comes bursting to life with even harder riffs that recall everything from Deerhunter, Brand New and Dinosaur Jr. Super-
nouveau plays to an almost straight rock structure without being boring and yet still revives some energy with each heavily built up crunch. Aslan Freeman’s voice on Settling is truly brilliant and inviting like an old song being heard for the first time. There seems no loose thread on this acts register, with an extremely tight sound, Unifier is able to rise higher and higher without forgetting where the ground is. A true mark of performing artists, Unifier can give what the crowd what it wants over and over again. For those in the NC area not informed, it would be a hasty comment to say that such styles are dead or dying when there are certainly plenty of talent still going strong. F+U is more than worth a few listens through and at the least suggests the sub-culture of thriving musicians living and functioning throughout the area is far from diminished or vacant. wiley chandler “missing melissa”
BY DIANA OATES
We Both Know The Truth Is, the new EP by Greenville native Wiley Chandler, was recently released as an exclusive digital download; and if you’re smart you will download it immediately. Recorded at Blackbird Studios in Nashville with an all star band, these songs are poetry set to music. The words in each song are meaningful and personal and if you didn’t know Wiley before you listened to his music, you do now. Wiley’s muse that he sings about in “Missing Melissa” just so happens to be his wife. Yes, that’s right, a musician who is actually writing about experience in a love that has lasted, which I find to be unique and refreshing in the world of music.“Take Away”, one of my favorites, makes the painful situation he sings about sound sweet, beautiful and comforting as he takes a different approach to the common country music subject and talks about healing someone else’s pain. What may be the best thing about Wiley’s music is that is all about musicality showcasing his vocal and guitar work. Stripped of any modern measures of sound that have been known to accompany some contemporary country music song, it’s just him, his guitar and his band; and really isn’t that what music fans want coming out of Nashville today?

LIFE
Why Thanksgiving? A Brief History Lesson
Thanksgiving at Plymouth In September 1620, a small ship called the Mayflower left Plymouth, England, carrying 102 passengers—an assortment of religious separatists seeking a new home where they could freely practice their faith and other individuals lured by the promise of prosperity and land ownership in the New World. After a treacherous and uncomfortable crossing that lasted 66 days, they dropped anchor near the tip of Cape Cod, far north of their intended destination at the mouth of the Hudson River. One month later, the Mayflower crossed Massachusetts Bay, where the Pilgrims, as they are now commonly known, began the work of establishing a village at Plymouth. Throughout that first brutal winter, most of the colonists remained on board the ship, where they suffered from exposure, scurvy and outbreaks of contagious disease. Only half of the Mayflower’s original passengers and crew lived to see their first New England spring. In March, the remaining settlers moved ashore, where they received an astonishing visit from an Abenaki Indian who greeted them in English. Several days later, he returned with another Native American, Squanto, a member of the Pawtuxet tribe who had been kidnapped by an English sea captain and sold into slavery before escaping to London and returning to his homeland on an exploratory expedition. Squanto taught the Pilgrims, weakened by malnutrition and illness, how to cultivate corn, extract sap from maple trees, catch fish in the rivers and avoid poisonous plants. He also helped the settlers forge an alliance with the Wampanoag, a local tribe, which would endure for more than 50 years and tragically remains one of the sole examples of harmony between European colonists and Native Americans. In November 1621, after the Pilgrims’ first corn harvest proved successful, Governor William Bradford organized a celebratory feast and invited a group of the fledgling colony’s Native American allies, including the Wampanoag chief Massasoit. Now remembered as American’s “first Thanksgiving”—although the Pilgrims themselves may not have used the term at the time—the festival lasted for three days. While no record exists of the historic banquet’s exact menu, the Pilgrim chronicler Edward Winslow wrote in his journal that Governor Bradford sent four men on a “fowling” mission in preparation for the event, and that the Wampanoag guests arrived bearing five deer. Historians have suggested that many of the dishes were likely prepared using traditional Native American spices and cooking methods. Because the Pilgrims had no oven and the Mayflower’s sugar supply had dwindled by the fall of 1621, the meal did not feature pies, cakes or other desserts, which have become a hallmark of contemporary celebrations.

THANKSGIVING DELICIOUS! BY:TAYLOR WHITE
This month is of course as we all know the month of Thanksgiving!! In honor of my word in last month’s column I have put together a couple EASY recipes to bring to any of your Thanksgiving feasts! This year you have no excuse to not bring a dish ;) ! Love, Tay
SHORT-CUT STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE
If your anything like me, you loooove Strawberry Shortcake but also if your anything like me you don’t always have tons of time on your hands to cook! Consider this your easy way out! What you will need: - 2 quarts (32 ounces) fresh strawberries - 1/3 cup plus 1 tablespoon sugar - 1 12-ounce tube Pillsbury Golden Home-style Buttermilk biscuits - 1 7-ounce can whipped cream Directions: 1. Rinse then slice your strawberries into a large bowl 2. Sprinkle your strawberries with the 1/3 cup of sugar and toss inside your bowl then set to the side 3. Open your biscuits and do as normal placing them on your baking sheet, sprinkle the tops of your biscuits with the remaining sugar and bake as directed (I suggest taking them out a bit early) 4. Once your biscuits are done let them cool for about 5 minutes and cut them in half, placing the bottom half on a plate 5. Take your whipped cream and spray on the bottom halves of your biscuits, and then spoon strawberries on top 6. Lightly pour extra strawberries juices over and sandwich with your biscuit tops! Everyone will be sure to gobble up this yummy Thanksgiving treat! g-vegasmagazine | 12

Iron Maiden and Megadeth Take Raleigh by Storm
BY TREY SINGLETARY
Last April, I was fortunate enough to catch wind of a concert that most metal fans in the area could only dream about. For the first time ever, Iron Maiden was coming to Raleigh to play at Walnut Creek. Last summer, they played a show in Charlotte, which was the first time they have played in North Carolina in 25 years. Even more strange, was they picked Raleigh as one of only eight tour dates in the United States. And to make things better, they were touring with Megadeth, another great metal band. Naturally, I scooped up a pair of tickets as soon as I got home, even though the show wasn’t until September. After many months of anticipation, the afternoon of September 3rd arrived. With excitement in the air, we left Greenville and headed to Raleigh. As soon as we parked we made our way to the gates, with 45 minutes remaining before the start of the show. To our surprise, there was already a line at the gates so long we couldn’t even see the venue. Thankfully the line moved quickly, only taking a few minutes to get inside, and we could tell the crowd would be energetic. Once inside, after purchasing an $11 beer (yes, $11!!), we fought our way into a spot at the front of the lawn. As we eagerly awaited the start of the show, more and more people began to fill up the areas around us. Just as the sun was beginning its descent to the horizon, one of the brightest, most realistic Plasma/LCD screens I have ever seen lit up, and the Prince of Darkness intro played. It was time! Megadeth was first to take the stage, starting it off with Hangar 18, one of their most recognized tunes and a personal favorite of mine. I had seen Megadeth on two other occasions, but never at such a large venue (those were at The Norva and The House of Blues). Megadeth has a pretty simple stage setup with just three LCD screens and no props. It’s all about the music with them, nothing in excess, with just four people jamming on stage, hair swinging and riff after riff of amazing guitar work. The crowd was starting to get into it with a little fist-pumping and devil horns. After a few more songs, they decided to hit us with the arsenal. They played Tornado of Souls, Symphony of Destruction, and Peace Sells consecutively. By this time blackness had fallen upon us, as the night crept in. The crowd was really getting into it, air guitars everywhere, and then the stage went black. Their time allotment was over. However, with a huge standing ovation from the crowd, they came out for an encore of Holy Wars…Punishment Due, which definitely made the price of a ticket worth it. The band thanked the crowd, and then that was it. g-vegasmagazine | 13 g-vegasmagazine | 13
Now for the most anticipated part of the show, Iron Maiden. I was looking forward to seeing them more than any band before, particularly because of their awesome props and stage show. After about 15 minutes the crowd was starting to get a little restless. “Iron Maiden, Iron Maiden,” was being chanted through the venue, to the same tune you might hear, “Overrated, Overrated,” at a sports venue. Then, all the sudden the video screens cut on, with an intro of what seemed like a holy chorus chanting, almost operatic. Then it began. They started with Moonchild. For those of you that are unaware, Iron Maiden is one of the most unique bands you will ever hear. Each of their songs tells an epic story. You can just read their lyrics and think you are reading a short story. Also, their singer has the voice you expect to hear at an opera. It’s quite amazing! As I looked back, there was just a sea of people, all the way to the top of the lawn, and it looked like liquid with the way the crowd was swaying back and forth in such a fluid motion. With each new song, there was another epic scene displayed on stage, whether it’s a giant moving statue of “Eddie,” their famous zombie-like mascot, or a tapestry covering the entire back of the stage, and sometimes both. Watching the band, they are as energetic as any I have ever seen, and they are smiling the whole time enjoying themselves to the max. They played all the hits you would expect, such as Number of the Beast, Phantom of the Opera, The Trooper, and Wasted Years. During Run to the Hills, a giant 15-20 foot tall Eddie came out and walked around the stage, dressed like a pirate! After playing their self-titled song, the show was over. The crowd chanted louder than I have ever heard for an encore, and eventually the band came back out for a three song encore. Once the encore was over, you could just look around at the amazement of the crowd, half deaf and ears ringing. They looked as if a plane had just crashed in front of them. This definitely ended up being the concert that topped my all-time list. From the stage presence, to the props, to the music, it was unbelievable. It was well worth the wait. If any of you ever hear of Iron Maiden coming to the area again, you should definitely go check them out. Even if you aren’t a fan of the music, go for the stage show. By the time it’s over, you will be a fan of the music as well.

PIRATE NATION, TAILGATE CITY! BY DAVID JURY
Growing up in England the passion for football (soccer) was intense! With 92 professional teams in a small country with many old rivalries along came Hooligans! Whilst i was involved in some of this in the 90’s and had fun travelling around the country! Fighting rival fans eventually got old! Then moving to Greenville i found the great American sport of Football! Whilst the game is awesome! The before and after party is legendary! There aint no party like a football party! Buying a house about as close as you can get to Dowdy Ficklen stadium i now live in the middle of Tailgate City in Pirate Nation! I am now an ex Hooligan/English Pirate! The tailgate City of G-Vegas is 2nd to none. The smell of good food on a sunny day with drinking games ,music, laughter, the sound of a cannon going off regularly and good times is great! All this built around a winning football team is Amazing!!! I flagged down Kevin Howard (owner of the magazine) as he looked for a place to park with his trailer and D.J. equip-

Welcome to MOVEMBER! No, that’s not a typo. The 11th month is no longer November, it’s MOvember. It’s a charity that started in Australia a few years back with the goal of raising awareness and funds to combat testicular and prostate cancers by doing one of the manliest things possible… growing a glorious moustache! We ask you to join us this and every Movember in our mission to spread the word with a furry upper lip. The rules are simple: Movember 1st you MUST shave your upper lip clean and start fresh. Then, once that Mo starts growing, make sure it doesn’t connect to your beard if you wear one. Last, when someone asks “Hey, what’s with that amazingly sexy moustache you’re rocking there?” you tell them all about Movember and how important it is for men to get tested for testicular and prostate cancers. BAM! Along with growing our Mo’s, we’ve got some fun stuff coming your way in Movember to help spread the word. Throughout the month, we’ll be auctioning a guitar SIGNED BY THE BANDS OF CAROLINA REBELLION 2013 at 995thex.com and 100% of proceeds will go

NOVEMBER IT’S ALIVE! LIVE MUSIC IN G-VEGAS BY BAREFOOT WADE
November is shaping up to be a good month for live music here in Greenville. Live music is on the upswing again and we’ve got some good bands coming around so go check out some of these bands while they are in town. Rebeka Todd, a singer/song writer who got her start in Greenville, will be playing at Tipsy Teapot on Friday, Nov 8th. She writes good acoustic based songs and has a very soulful voice. She’ll be stoping through Greenville on an east coast tour that extends from New York to Georgia. Peasant’s Pub (like usual) is hosting some great bands this month. Many of their bands come from the “Home Grown Music” organization, which has a reputation for representing some of the best music the south east has to offer. One of those bands REBEKA TODD is Ultraviolet Hippopotamus which is a progressive rock band out of Grand Rapids, Michagin. They will also be playing on November 8. The following Thursday (November 14) Redhorse Black will be coming back to Peasants as well. They are an area band with a bluegrass/americana sound to them. And they’re a lot of fun to hang out with as well. The next day (November 15), Signal Fire will be coming up from Wilmington to play at The LIVE Bar. Signal fire is a Reggae band com-

posed of former members of 5th Generation and is rapidly gaining momentum in the short time they have been together. They are also the only Reggae band coming to town this month, so make sure you
catch that show. On November 23, an awesome funk band who call themselves “Pigeons Playing Ping Pong” will be bringing the funk back to Peasant’s Pub. This Baltimore band has come to Greenville before and always brings a good time. Their first visit to Greenville was at the legendary Sup Dog 4/20 party a couple years back. The local pirate community showed them a good time, so they’ve been passing through ever since. Also, you can check out David Dixon every Tuesday at AJ McMurphy’s. And if you are back in town the day after Thanksgiving, SIGNAL FIRE come check out my OneMan-Caribbean-Jam-Band show at AJ McMurphy’s on November 29.

Am I entering into some experimental study resulting in memory loss and a weird twitch? Nope. I just need to see you at Overton’s at 5am on November 29, 2013. I need you to walk through those beautiful doors. I need you to take a gift card out of the hands of the ever cheerful
