SOUND

THE BIG SOMETHING BY BAREFOOT WADE

Greenville this time of year is not quite as crazy as when school is in session, but there is a unique charm to the town during the summer season. It’s nice to get outside and do everything that you are normally to busy (or too cold) to do during the school year. Subsequnetly you may have a little extra time to catch a party and a late night show. Fortunatly for all who may be in Greenville, a very awesome band is coming back to Peasant’s Pub on Friday, July 11. Chances are you’ve heard me talk about The BIG Something in past articles. And there is a reason I talk about them so much.....they are one of the best bands that is consistently performing in Greenville. It never

ceases to amaze me how big and fresh their sound is. And they can captivate a highly diverse audience. Their high energy music is a fun mixture of dance-able grooves and face melting jams. Feel free to check them out on youtube if you need more proof though. They just released a great video for the song “Illuminated”. This band also has their own music festival each year, though by the time you read this, it will already have passed. It saddens me greatly that I will be out of town for The BIG Something’s triumphant return to Peasant’s Pub on July 11, so I want you to go in my place and have as much fun as humanly possible.

LIFE

MAKE YOUR OWN TRANSFORMES COSTUME AND WIN BIG! BY KEVIN HOWARD One year many years ago I decided to make a transformers costume for a Halloween contest. I decided to do my favorite transformer, Optimus Prime. First off, I need to thank my wife for being patient with me as I transformed our house into an utter mess of cardboard pieces, stinking it up with burning glue and paint and long hours of me talking and obsessing over the smallest details of this costume. She is truly a champion and is worthy of a whole new level of praise for putting up with this. I’d also like to thank my neighbors who all helped as well. Because of them, I was able to save so much time and expand on the ideas i had. Thanks! That year I wanted to making a really sick costume. I considered myself an artist and I wanted to push myself. I also didn’t want to spend a lot of money on it either. After days of pondering what I wanted to be, I decided on Optimus Prime—not the latest crumpled soda can Optimus Prime from the Bay movies, the original toy/cartoon one. Hands down he was my favorite toy. This robot was upper management, the leader of the Autobots. After some research of various depictions, and fabrications, I began building.

ART

ABSTRACT MOTION ERIK JONES

Motion, the debut solo exhibition by gallery artist Erik Jones. Jones’ work investigates form, both abstract and figurative, through a unique combination of hyperrealism and geometric expressionism. Rendering his subjects carefully in a photorealistic manner, each figure is then enveloped within a colorful swell of shapes, color and form. Such surreal interventions are accomplished through the artist’s methodical process of mark-making. Utilizing a wide range of materials, Jones’ mixed media approach creates a

GVM | 17

hypnotic tension between the familiar and the fantastical. Using watercolor and colored pencil as the soft foundation upon which Jones’ figures manifest, oil paint and wax pastels are then layered upon the main subject in a more intuitive manner. These saturated patterns move around the figure, further highlighting various gestures or the occasional curious glance peering out from behind the colorful structures. For his debut solo show, the subject of Jones’ paintings take on three separate forms, all unique yet interconnected into a

greater whole. The most recognizable of the paintings depict the nude human form, an ongoing motif in the artist’s greater body of work. Simultaneously, some of the paintings focus on what lies further beneath the skin, exploring memento mori and the symbology of death. Lastly, the third grouping of paintings in the exhibition stand void of any figure at all, giving in whole-heartedly to the mobility and flux of the more abstract qualities of Jones’ work. These three subjects take the helm of Motion, referencing a cyclical narrative of life, death and the unknown.

SPORTS

SCUBA NOW! BY ARRAN WRIGHT

You might not think that Greenville, NC would be the type of place you hear about scuba diving. However, I got a chance to interview an employee of a local business and scuba enthusiast to discover why now is the perfect time to start a new adventure. Scuba Now of Greenville is a full service NAUI dive shop located at 638-C E. Arlington Blvd Greenville, NC 27858 (Across form the Greenville mall). It is their mission: To make scuba diving affordable to everyone, and to turn the worlds dive population into ocean protectors. They carry a full line of diving equipment and accessories from well-known brands such as Mares, Bare and Sharkskin. They also carry a full line of equipment made in America from Atomic and Zeagle. They also have a variety of companies to support our diver’s multitude of activities such as spear fishing and underwater photography. Whether you’re looking for recreational or technical diving they can put you in great gear at a price you can afford. If you’re looking for something special to do this summer Scuba Now partners with their sister store based out of Wilmington running charters all summer long to a variety of locations such as

wrecks, ledges and artificial reefs. They also team up with them to work with summer camps in the Wilmington area and are always looking for ways to get more involved in their own community. “Our instructors have vast amounts of knowledge and experience. We are able to teach anything from basic scuba classes to instructor level courses. We offer our basic open water scuba certification for only $199. That includes all learning materials, classroom time, pool sessions, open water dives and we throw in a FREE boat dive as well. The educational material is done through NAUI’s ELearning so you can study and learn the material at your own pace. When you are ready we will set up a time to have you come to the class and get you ready for a new world of adventures.” Timothy Maynard, a former volunteer turned employee, loves the family atmosphere and great people he works with, but the thing he loves the most about working there is being able to introduce and share his passion for the scuba world with so many people. It is the only job he can think of that he gets up every day excited to go to work because he’s surrounded by people who have his same passions and it’s a revolving door of sharing the love for scuba diving with the world.
