Surviving Summer In Greenville
BY KAITLIN KRESS • http://theodysseyonline.com/
After the hustle and bustle of exams and the spring semester dies out, the majority of the ECU college students leave Greenville and head for home. With all the spirit of the pirate students gone, what’s left is a way less exciting version of Greenville, but still a place most of us consider our home. We, summer school students, experience Greenville in a different light in the scorching summer sun. Greenville is no longer the non-stop party destination but, rather, a much quieter city filled with anxious faces awaiting the new school year. Most students are taking classes, working jobs, or a combination of the two. Free time, when available, should be taken maximum advantage of, so here are a couple tips to make surviving your summer in Greenville a little more exciting: 1. Go to Sup Dogs. I know this sounds cliché, because I don’t think I could find a person familiar with Greenville who doesn’t like Sup Dogs. However, in the summer with way less students, Sup Dogs gives off sort of a “watering hole” atmosphere. Sup Dogs is a great place to escape the heat, grab a bite to eat, have a drink with friends, or to catch your favorite sports game on the outdoor deck. From Mug Night Monday to everyday drink specials and unforgettable bar food, Sup Dogs is a summer spot that you cannot pass up. Go frequently. 2. Take advantage of the South Tar River Greenway. The Greenway is a 3.1-mile trail located right in Greenville. If you are looking to get a little more active this summer, the Greenway is a great spot to go on a run, ride your bike, and walk your dog. The Greenway has a great off-leash dog park, a beautiful wildflower garden and many great nearby fishing spots. 3. Nightlife. If you are looking for a night out with your friends, downtown Greenville is the place to be. With the countless bar options, it would be hard to go downtown without having a great time. This summer, everyone seems to be headed to Pantana
GVM | 5
Bobs, Halfway House, and 5th Street Distillery and Annex. Although you can find something to do downtown for every night of the week, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday are the best nights to go to the bars. Pantana Bobs, Halfway House, and 5th Street Distillery and Annex are crowded, have great drink specials, and you’ll be sure to run into many of your friends who are in Greenville for the summer. 4. Visit Little Washington Waterfront. Little Washington Waterfront is located about 20 miles from Greenville. There are numerous restaurant choices in all price ranges, boutiques, art galleries, and much more. If you are looking for a nice place to go on a date or just to escape Greenville with some friends, Little Washington has a lot to offer. If you crave activities, you may also want to check out the area for its hiking trails, camp grounds, yoga studios, sailing lessons, and sky diving facility. On my next free weekend, I can’t wait to head to the waterfront with some friends, eat seafood, and check out everything the area has to offer. 5. Go to the beach. Whether it is just for the day or for a week, no summer is complete without a beach trip. Greenville is only 87 miles to the west of the Atlantic Ocean, giving beach-goers many options when picking a vacation spot. Atlantic, Indian, Wrightsville, Kure, and Carolina Beach are just a few beaches that are less than two hours away from Greenville. If you and your friends want an inexpensive and exciting weekend, Freeman Park at Carolina Beach offers $20 day passes where you can camp on the beach and wake up to a real oceanfront view. Although spending a summer in Greenville doesn’t quite live up to a school year with the rest of Pirate Nation, there is a lot to take advantage of. Hopefully, these tips make surviving the rest of your summer sessions in Greenville a little more adventurous and enjoyable.

LIFE
ROADTRIP FROM HELL Since I spend a lot of time on the road, I’m fairly used to encountering car trouble and other such traveling inconviences. But this roadtrip I’m about to tell you about will always be known as “The Roadtrip From Hell”. Shortly after Hurricane Arthur came through (and did nothing) I went down to South Carolina to play 6 shows over the course of a week and a half. The first one was an outdoor show in Murrells Inlet and it rained that night, so obviously that got cancelled. I didn’t think much of it cause these things happen and fortunatly I found a fun little party to go to. Next show was in Folly Beach. I drove a while and checked into a campground in Mt Pleasant, then proceded to go on to Folly Beach. Every thing was fine...until the ride home. Instantly I could tell something was majorly wrong and I barely make it back into the campground. I wake up the the next day and try to secure a rental car but to no avail. Fortunatly a good friend from North Carolina was heading down to Charleston which is where my evening show was at. He was able to pick me up (along with my equiment) and get me to my show that evening. So far things are a bit rough, but I’m managing the make the best of it. The next day I call AAA. Now before I go any further you need to understand that I don’t have a standard AAA membership, I have AAA Premium RV with 300 available towing miles per year. Everything should be taken care of. (By the way, I don’t actually have an RV, but AAA changed there policy maintaining that vans aren’t covered on a standard membership anymore and therefore left me stuck on the beach because they failed to notify me of the policy change) . One thing I had noticed in my membership was that for an out of state road emergency, I recieve a complimentary rental car and a hotel room until my vehicle is able to drive back home. Thinking I’m covered on this, I inquire as such only to find that an “out of state emergency” only counts if I’ve been in a car wreck, not if my van breaks down and is immobile. So that’s a bummer. Well I get a rental car and call AAA again to come tow me to a dealership that is near my next gig in Pawleys Island. They assure me that someone will be there in 45 minutes. An hour and a half later they call back to tell me that no one is available at all today.
GVM | 7
BY BAREFOOT WADE
I have to explain to AAA that this is completly unexectable for multiple reasons and they reluctantly find someone to tow me...5 hours later. So I make my gig in Pawleys Island (a bit late might I add) and find a place to crash that night. I get the verdict that my transmission has blown which is both expensive and completly inconvienent being that I’m traveling around playing shows and sleeping in my van all summer. The only advantage I have right now is that my brother in law has a business in Jacksonville, North Carolina and can get this transmission fixed at about half the price. The only catch is that I have to tow my van back to North Carolina. I realized that I have just enough free towing miles on my super deluxe AAA membership to tow me home so that I don’t have to pay $4,100 for a transmission all while being stuck in South Carolina. Thinking that I have finally found the silver lining in all of this, I call AAA to tow me home. That’s when they tell me that even though I have enough miles on my policy to tow me home, they won’t do so. Obviously, I’m pissed but I’m managing to hold it together as I ask to talk to a manager who further explains that they will do nothing. So I’m screwed pretty hard here. Then my next show gets rained out. I’m screwed even harder now. But the next day I get a call from my brother in law, who has called the dealership in South Carolina that my van is at and he has somehow talked the owner into cutting me a major deal on the transmission saving me a little over $1000. Though I’ve always considered my sister’s husband a smart and resourceful person with a sharp eye for business, apparently I’ve still underestimated him. Though AAA was basically useless through out this entire ordeal, the saving grace of all this were my family and friends who really looked out for me. And how fortunate I was to have a good circle of people around me in both of the Carolina’s. Not to mention the coincidental miracle of having an old friend from back home that just happened to be driving down to Charleston when everything went to hell.

Raw: 5 Things You Need To Be
Successful BY ANTONIO JACKSON
1. BELIEF
The cornerstone of our very existence. Do you believe you exist? Belief is the driving force towards the unknown. Without it, America would not be the amazing nation it is today (all things considered, of course.) Without it, Kanye West would not have a career, especially considering the Taylor Swift incident. He had to BELIEVE in everything he achieved beforehand, himself, and everything achieved thereafter. This same power is in you. Whatever it is that you have in the back of your mind while going about your daily grind. Whatever you have a burning passion to achieve but because of doubt or lack of self-confidence you don’t pursue. THAT thing. It is yours. It is for you. Believe this. Embody this in ALL you do. THIS is the starting point.
GVM | 9
2. KNOWLEDGE If belief is the heart, knowledge is the firm ground we walk. Knowledge is the facts, the know-how, and the pool we must drown ourselves in. Knowledge gives belief a physical body. Build yourself up. USING your resources is RESPECTING your resources. Ask questions when you’re not sure. LISTEN to the answers! Soak up the perspectives of others. Research and take the time to READ about the subject you BELIEVE in. This is not the 90’s. Follow Tumblr blogs, WordPress sites, Facebook and Twitter pages related to your interest. And pay attention to them. LinkedIn and Google+ are also excellent resources. Feed your belief! Give your belief a body!
GVM
LIFE
3. APPLICATION
This is one of the critical steps many people miss. We live in a society that prides itself on knowledge. We see it in our education system, personal relationships, and most of all HATERS. Knowledge IS power. But power can be lost without exercise. APPLY what you learn. Apply it AS SOON AS YOU CAN! Application is important to the learning process. Knowledge is the food of the brain. Application is the use of this energy. When we eat food naturally, our body absorbs the nutrients for normal bodily functions. If we don’t use this energy, we experience something called GETTING FAT. Fat is unused energy that is now more difficult to use. APPLICATION is the activation of the energy, or knowledge, within our brain. Use it or lose it.
4. PERSISTENCE
Persistence synthesizes all of the above. Belief. Knowledge. Application. Belief. Knowledge. Application. Belief. Knowledge. Application. Belief. Knowledge. Application. This repetition is important for mind, body, and soul. We get so lost in acquiring knowledge, we forget the application and experience emotions of unworthiness or worthlessness. These feelings are remedied by belief. Belief spurs us to action, thus we are more prone to DO. To apply what we know. Belief. Knowledge. Application. PERSISTENCE! DRIVE! THE GRIND!
5. FAMILY
Family is one of the most overlooked aspects of being successful. What is family? Family is a social construct. Family is mom and dad. Family is grandma, the one who kisses your boo-boos. Family is friends: those who you enjoy being around. For me, family is everyone. Any and every one can contribute to your well-being. A simple eye contact and smile from someone passing you on the street: Positive emotions psychologically affect your mind-state and even your physical health. Even those who you wholeheartedly disagree with can be family. Family does not mean a rainbows-and-kittens relationship. Family means “I will look out for you.” “I love you.” “I support you.” “I respect you.” I have SOME type of relationship with you. And in today’s world of social media, we are realizing these truths about one another at an increasing rate. Family is one of the most vital parts of being successful because it lets us know that we are not alone. Find family who can attribute to just one, if not ALL of these tips, and you will be well on your way to success above your wildest beliefs.

LIFE
Your First Year At Ecu BY BETSY WENTWORTH
With another eventful year beginning at East Carolina University, I found myself thinking about all of the things I wish someone had told me before I came here. Starting your first semester away from home, fresh out of the military, or coming from community college can be difficult. I know at least for me, ECU was a culture shock. Here are all of the things I learned the hard way, and I hope that you don’t have to. Don’t bring alcohol or drugs into the dorms! Unless you’re over 21, don’t have alcohol in your dorm. Your RA WILL do checks of your room, and possession and underage drinking charges are something that can be easily avoided. No one cares about what you did in high school! Seriously...no one cares. You were popular? Awesome, tell your future children. Unless you started an epic social movement, or you were a child celebrity that just wanted a normal life after stardom, no one cares. College is the era AFTER high school, so if you didn’t like who you were in high school, here’s your chance to reinvent yourself! Don’t be discouraged by rude people! Taking everything seriously in college is a waste of time. Yes, there will be rude people,
GVM | 13
but most people are generally friendly. Talk to a random stranger, you never know who you’ll meet. Make as many friends as possible! I cannot stress this enough! Not everyone you meet will be your eternal best friend until you die, but in order to MEET those people, you have to go through some crappy ones. Say hi to everyone, be friendly to everyone, and never underestimate people. The staff are people too! Those older people you see walking around in light blue shirts DO have souls. Some of the nicest people I have met at ECU have been the staff. Remember, most people brush them off and don’t take the time out of their day to even ask them how they’re doing; be that one person a day who does. They could have a lot of wisdom to offer. Wear what you want, and be who you want! Like I said, college is a chance to reinvent yourself, so be who you REALLY want to be! To this day, I still get judgmental looks for my eccentric outfits and generally goofy behavior, but they are outweighed by the compliments and great people I’ve met by being the person I really am.
GVM
LIFE
Go outside! There are so many things to experience on and off campus. Just by exploring campus, you can find so many things you never thought you would. If you like being outside anyways, ECU is a fantastic place to be. Just a few blocks away from campus, you can go running, biking or walking on the Greenway. The trails run behind neighborhoods, the dog park and through the woods. You can also take the bus to North Rec! There, you can go kayaking, play sand volleyball, or just enjoy the manmade beach. Experience EVERYTHING! There are countless opportunities for great memories at ECU, and not all of them revolve around going downtown. This month ECU Football will be starting back again, so get your tickets early! There are many on-campus events like Barefoot on the Mall, movies shown by the Student Activities Board, and the Polar Bear Plunge in the Spring. If you explore downtown, you’ll find live music (Peasant’s Pub & Tipsy Teapot are excellent for live music!), and Freeboot Friday on the Fridays of home football games. Stock up on rain gear! Had I known how much it rains in Greenville, I honestly would have bought a canoe. Having a good sturdy umbrella, rain jacket, and waterproof shoes will make such a difference! There will be weeks where it will rain every single day, and you’re going to want to be prepared. Be prepared for the dorms! Living in the dorm was an experience in itself. Keeping all of your stuff organized will make your life much easier. The dorm shower “myths” that you’ve heard...are NOT myths. Buy shower shoes, and expect the unexpected. Get
a shower caddy and a bath robe! If you’re shy now, you probably won’t be by October. Also, if you plan on using the internet a lot, you may be better off paying for your own internet. Dorm internet can be very unreliable, especially during peak hours. Don’t underestimate your classes! Most of your classes will seem easy at first, but rest assured, they will catch up with you. Even intro classes are usually jam-packed with information, and even though it sounds easy, it can be a lot to remember! Studying really does pay off. Don’t push it off until the last minute. Studying a little bit at a time throughout the week, and starting that exam study guide early will make you much happier in the end. Study in the library! This is something many of us have learned the hard way. Trying to study in your room, or even your apartment later on, is one of the most pointless and infuriating things ever. With so many distractions so easily available (especially your bed), getting everything done becomes much more difficult. Go to the library,

SUMMER FOOD CHALLENGES
BY: BRIAN GOINGS
As long as I have seen or heard about what different restaurants has to offer I have never done a summer food challenge. What I mean is that Greenville has a lot of restaurants, many of which have a very good menu and lots of varieties to chose from. However, many of you like myself probably have never tried or ventured out from our usuals. This summer I want to challenge everyone to pick a restaurant. Pick a section out of their menu and try every single dish that they have to offer from that section. It doesn’t have to be in one week but you have all summer to do so. Even if you see
GVM | 17
something that you normally would not eat, try it anyway. For myself I have chosen a very simple thing. I have chosen the all mighty milkshake. Why? Growing up I have had many but I always got the same thing...either strawberry or vanilla. I did occasionally try banana or cheesecake but thats it. It didn’t matter where I went I would get the same thing. Now I’m challenging myself to try all 25 flavors of Sonic’s milkshake menu. So far I have tried two and they are the chocolate oreo, and jalapeno chocolate shake...yes that is right jalapeno chocolate shake. I started with those because I’m not a chocolate
fan but both were interesting tastes. The Chocolate oreo reminded me of an ice cream sandwich and the jalapeno chocolate tasted like chocolate ice cream with jalapenos in it...which it was. Either way I have tried them and I have 23 flavors to go. I am interested in knowing everyone’s experiences; so whenever you finish a meal please find Gvegas Magazine on facebook and post your results on our page with the hashtag #SummerFoodChallenege. We at G-vegas love pictures so feel free to post a picture with your review as well.

PEASFEST 2014
peasfest - noun, pronounced \ˌpez - fest\ : a gathering, event, or show having a specified focus <a music fest>
When Peasants Pub is rocking, it seems like the building might be unable to contain so much energy. Music pours over the supportive, raucous audience, lights swirl and twist, and everything accelerates to a pulsating crescendo which threatens to launch the roof into the Greenville night. With Peasfest, a music festival scheduled Sept. 25-27, the Peasants crew knew it might be too much music, too many bands — too much FUN — to keep bottled up. So, with the addition of an outdoor stage, the city’s live-music destination will have plenty of room, inside and out, to present three days of bands for your auditory delight. Considering the lineup planned for that special weekend, you best save your pennies and dust off your dancing shoes. It will be an event you won’t want to miss. It all kicks off on Thursday night September 25th when two North Carolina acts from opposite sides of the state come together to open the festivities. Opening the night is Greenville’s own Psylo Joe, a five-member group which hosts a biweekly “Psylo Jam” on Tuesday at Peasants. Combining originals and covers, these locals are certain to get the party started right. Following them is Supatight, frequent visitors to the Peasants stage. The seven-piece outfit comes from the hills of Ashville, where they’ve been mixing together funk and groove for a sound that won’t let you stand still. It’s best to think of Peasfest as a marathon, not a sprint, because you’ll want to be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed come Friday, when the music plays all night long. Local favorites Rebekah Todd and the Odyssey will kick things off
GVM | 19
outside. Rebekah, one of the city’s most talented singer-songwriters, joined up with the five-piece Odyssey last year with outstanding results. As their debut album “Roots Bury Deep” attests, the blend of her folk-blues sensibilities with their rock-funk sound is a match made in … well, Greenville. You’ve never heard anything like the Jonathan Scales Fourchestra, playing the outdoor stage as well. Yes, there are comparisons to be made about the innovative jazz group, which combines steady percussion and a driving, bounding bass with the lush, island sounds of the steel pans. But the music they produce is unique and beautiful, a treat for the ears. Come to Peasants with any frequency — and if you don’t, what the hell? — and you probably know the folk-rock played by the boys in Big Daddy Love. While their music may be the perfect accompaniment for sitting on a porch in the western North Carolina mountains, they fit in just fine on the Peasants stage. They are usually a must-see even for local music fans, and as the headliners outside on Friday, you can expect their performance at Peasfest will be no different. To cap the night off, who better than the intricate and beautiful sonic tapestry woven by The Mantras, the Peasfest headliner inside on Friday and Saturday night. On the heels of their fourth album, “Jam
Bands Ruined My Life,” this Greensboro group plays high-energy dance music that is unmistakably original. Their shows at Peasants are the stuff of legend and they’ll be writing a new chapter over two nights this fall. There’s a full day of music planned for Saturday, and next month’s magazine will have all the details. But for now, what you need to do is open your calendar app and mark off Sept. 25-27. Then, take a deep breath because the waiting is the hardest part.
!
Advance tickets will be available soon through etix.com and you eager beavers will want to act quickly since entry to The Mantras shows will be limited. There’s no place like Peasants for live music. And you can rest assured there will be nothing like Peasfest when it happens next month.

MOVIES
Budapest Hotel
BY: NATHAN J. BLACK
Wes Anderson has been on a roll lately it would seem, going from Fantastic Mr. Fox to Moonrise Kingdom to his most recent work, The Grand Budapest Hotel. Anderson is quite possibly the most chic and recognizable auteur of the current generation. What is so surprising in his work is his ability to reach younger audiences without leaving the previous ones out of the loop or without a voice. This strength comes from his humor and use of quirky characters draped in vivid, pastel shades, usually indicative of the differences from one character’s personality to another. His subject matters have always been of the higher caliber, also. Usually the humor of his stories drawing from children or young teens trying to be more adult than they really are. Imagine a work by Hemingway or Salinger wrapped in the wardrobe of H&M and a beret and you’ll begin to see a rough outline of what Anderson produces. Some might consider this to be too artful, and bordering on or in the realm of pretentious--and while there is room to make argument toward this--Anderson seems to move around all such notions with his finished products which are anything but. The Grand Budapest Hotel, in many ways, is quite possibly his most mature work to date. Whereas in earlier films there might have been a underlining use of pop british rock and pop indie bands supplying a soundtrack to go along with his films, his most recent work has only its tender, jaunty score and a lapse from trying to be cooler than it really is. The story of The Grand Budapest is inspired by the works of Stefan Zweig, an Austrian writer from the turn of the century, who wrote stories much the same as the one told in the film. The film follows the story of a writer discovering the life events of the owner of the Grand Budapest Hotel, a hotel dwindling in status and decor. The owner, Zero Moustafa, opens up to
the writer and begins telling of his formative years and training under Monsieur Gustave H. (played by Ralph Fiennes), the concierge at that time. During this period Zero works as a lobby boy and finds himself shadowing the studious, tight waisted Gustave H. and picks up on a number of his hilarious eccentricities. One of these being his attraction to rich elderly women. When one of his former lovers dies and leaves a priceless piece of art to Gustave, it is up to Zero and his pastry chef girlfriend to help clear his name when a conspiracy unfolds to take it away from Gustave. The Grand Budapest Hotel--like many of Anderson’s movies-has more than enough recognized stars to turn heads with surprise. The cast includes F. Murray Abraham, Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum, Jason Schwartzman, Jude Law, Tilda Swinton, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, and several others. A fantastically cast Fiennes in the roll of Gustave works to inspire the relative newcomer, Tony Revolori, as he plays young Zero, the Lobby Boy. Gustave and Zero’s relationship is without a doubt one of the most touching connections seen in recent years. Grand Budapest has plenty of heart and intrigue with the right style of humor to keep it going. Anderson leaves us looking into the past and wondering where it all went. Even more, it might leave some to wonder just who Stefan Zweig is. Plenty of summer left to check out the library and see. The Grand Budapest Hotel is now available on DVD. Final Grade: A+

Barbecue
Be a Grill Master
Start with a clean, oiled grill to keep food from sticking. Preheat the grill, give it a scrub with a grill brush and then brush it with vegetable oil. Avoid turning meats frequently on the grill -- one flip is all they need. Once your meats are grilled to your taste, let them rest for a few minutes on a warm plate tented with foil. This gives the meat time to “rest” and lets the juices regroup for the best flavor.
Plan the Perfect Menu
Consider how many guests are coming. For smaller groups, you can add more detail to the menu -- offer breads like ciabatta or baguettes instead of the usual buns, or a nice selection of cheeses to make the meal more upscale. If your barbecue is on the larger side, stick to the basics with a few extra twists: avocado slices or garlic mayonnaise as toppings, cucumber or lemon slices in pitchers of water. Take into account non-meat eaters, too.
GVM | 23
After all, what’s more fun than gathering friends and family for a sunny, backyard picnic or a garden party under the stars? I know I love it. But I’ve always found that a little bit of planning can take a perfectly nice meal outside to the next level and make it a truly memorable event. Have you got a theme in mind? What kind of lighting are you thinking of? And most importantly, what can you serve that will really wow your guests? Here are just a few fun ideas to get your creative juices flowing.
Don’t Skip the Side Dishes
While the star of barbecues are often the grilled meats, side dishes are important too -- especially if you have non-meat eaters in the group. Take advantage of summer fruits and vegetables like sweet corn, tomatoes and watermelon. This easy watermelon gazpacho, herbed sweet corn and tomato salad or summer vegetable kebabs all use in-season favorites.
Pick a Signature Drink
Sure, you can throw some beers in a cooler and call it a day. But to make your barbecue memorable, why not select a special drink to serve guests?
