THE G-VEGAS RULES
OF TAILGATING BY RANDY MOORE
To throw down with your friends before the game, refresh yourselves on the etiquette or face the harsh consequences of being arrested in the parking lot!
1. Man requires charred animal flesh in order to survive grueling
6. A tailgate is a free-admission egalitarian event... assuming you brought some cold beer to bribe your way in.
2. If anyone in your crew showcases the visiting team’s colors,
7. “Touch” football is for people afraid of getting dirty! It’s tackle or bust. Penalty: Anyone who knocks over a beer is on cleanup duty.
3. The 10-second rule shall apply to all solid food that falls off
8. Don’t ever criticize another man’s meat. The way he cooks is his call. And there is no such thing as “medium-rare.”
hours of partying, cheering, and tearing off of shirts. No salads allowed!
It’s an offense punishable by taunting, merciless ridicule, and in extreme cases, power noogies.
the grill; up to two minutes is acceptable if you throw the food back on the grill to “Cook it off.”
4. Most sporting events, from the big game to your basement beer pong tournament, can and should be tailgated. Notable exceptions: chess, competitive eating contests, and the national badminton championships. 5. A tailgate is not an appropriate way to spend a first date.
The only acceptable date is your buddy Ted and only if he brings chips to barter with the natives.
GVM | 7
9. Depending on how much beer is left and how bad your team is, making it to your seats by kickoff is strictly optional. 10. Forget trash cans.... throw all the garbage in the trunk and worry about it later. 11. Tell your friends they have five minutes to figure out where the tickets are. Why even go into the game? The party is out here!!

Tips College Freshmen Should Know • MAINTAIN A COLLEGE BUDGET
While students and parents are aware of the upfront costs of college, they should also be cognizant of hidden costs. Keeping a record of all expenditures will force students to be accountable for extracurricular spending, including clothes shopping and nights out with friends.
• BE PROACTIVE ABOUT FIGHTING COLLEGE STRESS
There are many things that can pressure new college students: making friends, doing well in class, and enhancing their résumé, to name a few. But freshmen may be able to alleviate some of this stress by getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, or seeking out counseling services on campus.
• GET ALONG WITH ROOMMATES
One major transition for many college students is adjusting
GVM | 9
to sharing a small space with other people. Roommates may be able to avoid issues if ground rules are set from the beginning. Having conversations about cleaning schedules or having friends over can ensure roommates are on the same page.
• CONSIDER GREEK LIFE
Freshmen who are worried about making friends on campus could consider joining a fraternity or sorority. Greek life exposes students to formal dances, intramural sports, and philanthropic projects, to name a few. But before joining, students should consider the pros and cons of Greek life.
• FIND CHEAP COLLEGE TEXTBOOKS
Full-time students spent an average of $655 on required course materials during the 2010-2011 school year, according to the National Association of College Stores. Before freshmen purchase textbooks at college bookstores, they should consider renting.

LIFE
ANOTHER LEGEND GONE: IN LOVING MEMORY OF ROBIN WILLIAMS BY CHRISTINA BOGART
Robin McLaurin Williams was an Actor, comedian, and filmmaker. Starting as a stand up comdiean in San Franciso and LA in the mid-1970s, he is credited with leading San Francisco’s comedy renaissance. After rising to fame as Mork in the TV series Mork and Mindy (1978–82), Williams went on to establish a career in both stand-up comedy and feature film acting. In 1973, Williams attained a full scholarship to the Julliard in New York City. He was one of only 20 students accepted into the freshman class and one of only two students to be accepted by John Houseman into the Advanced Program at the school that year; the other was Christopher Reeve Reeve remembers his first impression of Williams when they were two new students at Juilliard: “He wore tie-dyed shirts with track suit bottoms and talked a mile a minute. I’d never seen so much energy contained in one person. He was like an untied balloon that had been inflated and immediately released. I watched in awe as he virtually caromed off the walls of the classrooms and hallways. To say that he was “on” would be a major understatement” Williams and Reeve remained close friends for the nine years after Reeve’s accident in 1995 that left him paralyzed from the neck down. When Williams visited him in the hospital quite a while after the fall, Reeve said that it was the first time since the accident that he laughed, and Williams told him that he would do anything to help him. Once Reeve’s Insurance Ran out Williams paid his medical bills out of pocket for many years until his death in 2004 and after Reeve’s widow, Dana, died in 2006, he provided practical and financial support for their 14-year-old son Just as many celebrities do Robin WIlliams developed a Drug and alcohol habit that he was unable to control. Williams stated that partly due to the stress of doing stand-up, he started using drugs and alcohol early in his career. He further stated that he never

drank or did drugs while on stage but occasionally performed when ill with a hangover from the previous day. Williams was a casual friend of comedian John Belushi. With the sudden death of Belushi, and the birth of his son Zak, it prompted him to quit drugs and alcohol: “Was it a wake-up call? Oh yeah, on a huge level” in 2003 he started drinkin again and in 2006 entered Rehab admitting his addiction to alcohol. He never returned to using Drugs though. In mid-2014, Williams admitted himself into the Hazelden Foundation for his alcoholism. Williams’s publicist Mara Buxbaum commented that the actor was suffering from severe depression prior to his death., Williams’s wife Susan stated that in the period before his death, he had been sober but was diagnosed with early stage Parkinson’s Diease which was something he was “not yet ready to share publicly” August 11, 2014 will forever be a sad day in history to me. one of the brightest stars I have ever had the pleasure of watching on the big screen took his life. Williams died at his home in Paradise City, California. In the initial report released on August 12, the Marin County Sheriff’s Office deputy coroner stated Williams had hanged himself with a belt and died from asphyxiation. Depression and Suicide are very serious matters and even the brightest and best of us suffer from thoughts of both. If you or anyone you know are having these thoughts you can find out more into y calling th Suicide hotline at 1-800-273-8255 or go to http://www. suicidepreventionlifeline.org/ and you can speak to someone. You dont have to give out any of your information if your not comfortable. but please dont stand by and watch someone you love suffer and dont allow yourself to either. RIP ROBIN WILLIAMS.... YOU WILL BE MISSED BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN.

Pigeons Playing Ping Pong GVM
LIFE
BY: BAREFOOT WADE
Pigeons Playing Ping Pong Returns to G-Vegas! On Thursday, September 18 a really fun and funky band will be returning to Peasant’s Pub. This is a show you will want to go to regardless of whatever type of music you generally listen to. Some bands have the capability of reaching out to diverse crowds and Pigeons Playing Ping Pong is a good example of this. I first saw them a couple years back at the infamous 4/20 doggie jams when they came around with Cindercat. Since then they have been regular visitors of this party town we call G-Vegas. Just in case you aren’t familar with them, I figured I’d ask them a few questions so that we can entice you to come to their show. When did the band form? Our first time jamming together was December 2007. Jeremy and Greg met in September 2006 and immediately started making music and playing acoustic gigs. Their two-person project often began with The Jeremy Schon Experience, Jeremy’s solo looping project. Then Greg would join in for a few originals and covers, including their dormroom sensations ‘I Like to Blaze’ (original) and ‘No Woman No Farmhouse’ (Bob Marley/Phish mashup). How did yall come up with such an awesome band name? Is there a funny story behind it? There was a particular Psychology class freshman year that was quite hilarious. We saw the phrase in our textbook and never looked back (or back in the textbooks). What were some of your favorite festivals that you played at this past year? Domefest, AURA Music & Arts Festival, Mad Tea Party Jam, Mountain Music Festival, StrangeCreek Campout and ton of others. We love festivals! If everyone in the band could be a super hero, who would each of the individual members be? Jeremy Schon - Captain Planet Greg Ormont - The Human Torch Dan Schwartz - The Invisible Man Ben Carrey - Stevie Wonder If the band was collectively taken hostage by a family of Sasquatch, what song (original or cover) would you sing to soothe the savage beast and lead them to release you? Jeremy - “Happy Birthday” Greg - “No Quarter” by Led Zeppelin Dan - “Baby I’m Amazed By You” by Lonestar Ben - “Indiglo” by PPPP I bet you thought we’d say our song “Couldn’t We All” (just get along). We all know that you are an awesome funk band. This being said, how do YOU like to describe your music and what you do on stage? We play high-energy psychedelic funk music and when we’re on stage, we grab your souls with our smiles and build our collective energy until it blasts through the highest stratosphere.
GVM | 13
What was the strangest gig you’ve ever played and what made it so unusual? We played a festival in Darlington, MD called FetFest in 2012. It was a sexual fetish-themed gathering and nearly everyone in the crowd was naked. There were all sorts of avant garde sexual demonstrations going on, sex toys and furniture all around the site, we saw a naked witch hunt, one of us streaked… it was an interesting one to say the least. If the band could float on a candy cane in a river of NyQuil with any musician (dead or alive) who would it be? Jeremy - Dave Grohl Greg - Trey Anastasio Dan - T Pain and Rick Astley Ben - Flea, Lil John, James Brown and Rick Astley

PEASFEST 2014
peasfest - noun, pronounced \ˌpez - fest\ : a gathering, event, or show having a specified focus <a music fest>
There aren’t too many better ways to spend a Saturday in the fall than cheering for the Pirates at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. You can make a day of it, enjoying a good tailgate with great friends leading up to an East Carolina victory. But what to do when that pesky “bye” week rolls around? Your friends at Peasants Pub have you covered on Saturday, Sept. 27, as they present a full day of live music in the third and final day of Peasfest, a festival set to take place Sept. 25-27. Last month’s G-Vegas magazine contained the full details about the first two nights. Psylo Joe and Supatight kick things off Thursday. Then things move outside on Friday for Rebekah Todd and the Odyssey, the Jonathan Scales Fourchestra and Big Daddy Love before The Mantras tear it down on the main stage to close the night. Those lineups are outstanding, but Peasants saved the best for last with another evening of music set to rock downtown Greenville on Saturday. It all begins with Electric Soul Pandemic, a five-piece jam outfit from Greensboro. The group plays tight, high-energy dance music that will get the crowd dancing from the outset. At times spacey, at times groovy and at times funky, ESP delivers it all. Trust that this is a headlining band disguised as the Saturday opener. This is how you start a slate of music. If you have yet to see Jimkata at Peasants then, quite honestly, you’ve been missing out. The four-piece from Ithica, N.Y., has been tearing apart the festival circuit and leaving a trail of happy fans in their wake. With sharp instrumentation, clever song writing and a big sound, this is music best enjoyed in an outdoor setting. And to make things even better, they’ll be playing as the sun goes down to kick start the Greenville night.
GVM | 19
By the time Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band hits the stage, folks should be ready for lift-off. That’s good, because the Booty Band will bring the rocket fuel. The five-piece funk unit from the far side of the state (Asheville, for those interested in the particulars) will be making its debut on the Peasants stage and it’s safe to say the crowd should be excited. This crew will close things out under the star so be sure to save some energy. They’re more than worth it. At the conclusion of that set, the focus turns back inside for the second night of The Mantras. Honestly, what more can be said about these favorites from Greensboro? Their fourth album, “Jam Bands Ruined My Life,” has the type of tongue-in-cheek cleverness from the guys behind the instruments, but what pours out the speakers is genuine magic. These guys pack the house on each and every visit, and expect to do it again when they close out an awesome weekend of music. So that’s the deal: two bands Thursday, four bands Friday and four bands on Saturday, including the two nights of headlining sets by The Mantras. Advance tickets are available throughetix. com and, as was mentioned last month in this space, you eager beavers will want
ELECTRIC SOUL PANDEMIC
YO MAMA’S BIG FAT BOOTY BAND
JIMKATA to act quickly since entry to The Mantras shows will be limited. It’d be impossible to find a better way to spend a weekend than what Peasants Pub is offering with Peasfest. Yes, you could be at home studying. But time management is one of the most important skills you can learn at college. So hit the books during the week, and come to downtown Greenville for the music on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Sept. 2527. You won’t want to miss it.

KINGS BY CHRISTINA BOGART
October 6, 2012- That day will forever be in my head. It’s the day I became a hardcore follower of a very genuine talented group of guys. And I say Genuine because they are just that… you can ask any fan. When you see them it isn’t like going to a concert It is like chillen with family and causing some havoc. Almost kings the ATL based Hip Hop/ Rock band have always been loyal to their fans….they give so much to us that NOW it’s our turn to give back to them. Any true AK fan knows our boys have always been independent. They can barely afford to feed themselves let alone ride on some big flashy tour bus, Crashing 6 to a room at Family and Friends houses. Buying their own studio time and albums to make sure us the fans are always satisfied. Well albums don’t grow on trees and neither does money so Its time for the AK family to join forces with www.indiegogo. com to raise the money with their fans to make a high quality studio album. If you go to the site and search almost

kings you will find the campaign. Don’t fret though your loyalty doesn’t go unrewarded…. How about some signed posters, pre order of the album, private screening parties, written Lyrics by Boze and so much more……. But WAIT! What if I told you that you could be on their guest list FOR LIFE? But you better move fast spots are limited. There are exclusive posters skateboard decks and just anything a fan could desire. You can see a break down of how the donations will be used and keep track of whats left and whats been raised. Don’t just sit back and let the industry take away our self expression Lets make this album about the true Music Diehards out there. Those of us driving 10 hours, getting tattoos, seeing the same show live 45 times and always feeling like it is the first.
