St. Patrick’s Day
Fun & Facts Did you know?
A few facts about St. Patrick’s Day that you may not know: • Corned beef and cabbage is a traditional St. Patrick’s Day dish • There are 36.9 million U.S. residents with Irish roots. This number is more than eight times the population of Ireland itself (4.5 million). • Irish is the nation’s second most frequently reported ancestry, ranking behind German. • The first St. Patrick’s Day parade took place in the United States on March 17, 1762, when Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched through New York City. • More than 100 St. Patrick’s Day parades are held across the United States. New York City and Boston are home to the largest celebrations.

• At the annual New York City St. Patrick’s Day parade, participants march up 5th Avenue from 44th Street to 86th Street. More than 150,000 people take part in the event, which does not allow automobiles or floats. Where did the Irish get their world-known symbol, the Shamrock? The shamrock, which was also called the “seamroy” by the Celts, was a sacred plant in ancient Ireland because it symbolized the rebirth of spring. By the seventeenth century, the shamrock had become a symbol of emerging Irish nationalism. As the English began to seize Irish land and make laws against the use of the Irish language and the practice of Catholicism, many Irish began to wear the shamrock as a symbol of their pride in their heritage and their displeasure with English rule.

Phillip Hoffman: R.I.P.
I’m sure by now there will be plenty of talk over this year’s Super Bowl winners, The Seahawks. Everyone will either be still warm from the sentimental gifts from Valentine’s, or thoroughly relieved by the silly holiday’s passing. What I’d like to return people’s attention to is the passing of Philip Seymour Hoffman, though. It was impossible for those working and spending time on the net to have missed the story as it broke. The sad realization of the beloved actor were truly saddening to hear, but may come as more a surprise to some who may have been scratching their heads as to ‘where have I seen that guy again’ type questions. For those endearing fans this question will be a no-brainer, and the kaleidoscope of what colors (movies) do you focus on first starts. But before you can even travel down that road, it is important to consider the term “typecasted” which is usually how most actors make their careers, building a reputation as playing a certain character so much they become the embodiment of that archetype in stories. John Wayne plays the rugged, frontier, experienced shieff. Al Pacino is calm with all his work until the world breaks him into raging outbursts. Deniro’s fatherly power is made real by his uncer-
BY NATHAN BLACK tainty toward dealing with emotional problems. Seth Rogen’s comedic timing can be measured by a stopwatch: three nervous jokes followed by a dirty closer every two-minutes. The point here in this examination is the inability to pigeonhole Hoffman. Regardless of whatever sad truths lied in his private life, Hoffman gave some of the defining performances of his generation, and even managed to jump generational gaps, making fans of people far younger than himself. He played the sage, wizened hippie writer in Almost Famous; Chris Farley like best friend, opposite Ben Stiller in Along Came Polly; nervous, repressed sound man in Boogie Nights. He careened into Oscar-winning history with his portrayal of the sensitive, yuppie, eccentric Truman Capote. The list goes on: Doubt, Charlie Wilson’s War, Magnolia, Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead, Cold Mountain, Mission Impossible III, etc. Hoffman had the ability to cover a wide range of emotions and knew how to execute them on cue. While not the most beautiful, studly or suave of gentlemen gracing the screen, Hoffman
brought a depth of acting and presence that comes from somewhere other than being a figure of striking physical appeal and, in turn, brought with him other reasons to focus on humanity via film. The wealth of this fact is what made him such an outstanding figure in movies and able to reach so many. With a well of emotions to draw upon it is impossible to say which face was truly his own, and therein speaks the greater mystery as to who was he really? It would behove those with a love of films and/ or acting to go back and ask this question again, or if not just to watch some of the best movies of the last ten years. Whatever mood you are in, no matter what your personality you might be, more than likely there is a Hoffman movie suited to your taste and ready to catch your attention. His filmography is sizable for an actor who left us all too soon. How many more lives he might have showed us is anyone’s guess.

Don’t be above bending over to check on a rusty can Couple Discovers $10M In Gold Coins In Rusty Can “Don’t be above bending over to check on a rusty can” An anonymous California couple in Gold Country found $10 million worth of gold coins in rusty cans buried in the the hollow of an old tree. The find, nicknamed the Saddle Ridge Hoard, could be the largest treasure find in U.S. history. The 1,427 coins found date from 1847 to 1894 and are said to be in mint condition, having been uncirculated. They’ve been professionally graded and authenticated with a face value adding up to about $27,000 a piece, but rare coin experts believe that each could fetch nearly $1 million. “I don’t like to say once-in-a-lifetime for anything, but you don’t get an
g-vegasmagazine | 13
opportunity to handle this kind of material, a treasure like this, ever,” said veteran numismatist Don Kagin to the AP. “It’s like they found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.” The couple is remaining anonymous in order to not spark a gold rush to their property, also they don’t want their neighbors to look at them any differently now that they’re millionaires. “Their concern was this would change the way everyone else would look at them, and they’re pretty happy with the lifestyle they have today,” Chief Numismatist of Kagin Inc. David McCarthy said. The coins are reportedly in denominations of $5, $10, and $20 and
were stored in chronological order in the cans. The methods used to categorize them indicate that whoever put them there was using the ground like a bank and that they weren’t just stashed there by a robber. The coins apparently had been buried along a path that the couple had walked for years. They found them last spring when the woman bent over to look at an old rusty can that had popped out of the ground after some erosion. “Don’t be above bending over to check on a rusty can,” the woman reportedly said.

2014 CHEVROLET CORVETTE STINGRAY Read any review of the Corvette and you’ll see the same list of compliments and complaints: great performance, terrible interior, or some variation thereof. The Corvette team has an answer to that, and it’s called the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray making its star turn at the 2013 Detroit auto show. It starts at the core of the car. Every 2014 Corvette now features an aluminum frame, not just the higher-performance models. Instead of two uniformly thick, hydroformed rails, the chassis is now made up of five sections using hydroformed aluminum, cast aluminum, and extruded aluminum, with each section tailored to its purpose in strength and stiffness. The result is a 99-pound weight reduction with a 57 percent increase in stiffness. That’s 60 percent stiffer than today’s Z06 with the C7’s removable roof in place, and 20 percent stiffer with the roof out. Curb weight should be about the same after accounting for other changes. Moving outward, the C7 features redesigned suspension hardware with new aluminum control arms and stiffer links, knuckles, and bushings. The front and rear cradles are now hollow cast aluminum with stiffer attachment points for the suspension. Bilstein shocks are standard and upsized on the Z51 performance model (which returns after a four-year hiatus) for stiffer body control -- or why not spring for third-generation magnetic shocks? Whichever way you go, they
g-vegasmagazine | 17
hold down narrower 18-inch front/19-inch rear wheels (19 and 20 inches, respectively, and forged on Z51 cars) that improve the turning radius without sacrificing grip. In one of many crossovers from racing development, the same Michelin engineer who designs tires for the Corvette Racing Team now also designs the standard Pilot Super Sport Run-Flats that are unique to the C7. Behind those wheels are standard Brembo brakes that, while slightly smaller in diameter than before, boast 35 percent more swept area thanks to larger pads that cover more area on the rotor face. Z51 cars get larger front discs (13.6 inches versus 12.6 on the base C7) with 6 percent more swept area than a current Corvette Grand Sport and a lot more bite. Chevrolet says the new Stingray will stop 11 feet shorter than before, putting its 60-0-mph braking comparable with that of the mighty ZR1, which we measured at 94 feet. Things upstream of the wheels have improved as well. In the front end of the current car, Corvette Racing found consistent failure points in the mounts for the steering system. The C7’s steering system has been hard-mounted and beefed up, and the support structure is now, according to Chevrolet, 500 percent stiffer. The new electric power steering features a variable ratio and variable resistance for every circumstance. Source: www.motortrend.com

HEALTH
Chill Out and Lose Weight
BY NITHIN BHAGWANDASS
When speaking about weight management, the conversation traditionally revolves around diet and exercise. With diet being caloric intake and exercise as a proxy for calories burned. High calorie diets and a sedentary lifestyle are the two main culprits for the growing obesity epidemic. However, there may be other significant factors at play and by exploring these we can find innovative methods to improve weight management. Novel methods for weight management are particularly important due to the many harmful consequences of obesity. Dutch scientists have recently explored the effects of heating and air conditioning on weight management. Their research suggests that indoor, temperature controlled environments decrease the amount of calories we burn everyday and can lead to weight gain. This is important research because most of us spend the majority of our days in comfortably temperature controlled rooms. Historically, humans were exposed to various temperature environments that changed between night and day and throughout the seasons. Our natural physiologic responses allow us to endure these variations in temperature. For example, we can maintain our body temperature by sweating in hot temperatures or shivering in cold temperatures. These responses cause us to burn more calories, but shivering and sweating are uncomfortable. Another method that humans use to warm themselves in cold environments is what has been described as Non Shivering Thermogenesis (NST). This is a process that has long been known, but until recently its role in adults has been poorly understood. NST occurs in mildly cool environments that are not cold enough to cause shivering, and it is powered by burning calories in brown fat
g-vegasmagazine | 23
that produces heat. It has has been demonstrated in animal studies in the past, but until recently the implications of NST for weight loss have not been explored. Scientists believe that NST may be used for up to 30% of the body’s daily calorie expenditures in cool temperatures, and it plays the biggest role in young to middle-age adults. The research cited in the Dutch study showed a significant decrease in body fat after a 6 week program of mild cold exposure at about 63°F for 2 hours per day. Based on their data, the scientists also predict that by completing a long term training program of cold exposure, one could develop increased capacity for using NST and increase their gains from such a program over time. Their available data from human and animal studies leads them to advocate for “temperature training” as part of a weight management program alongside exercise training. Now, before you go turn down your thermostat and return to your couch potato lifestyle, it is important to remember that this program should be done in addition to a more comprehensive weight management program that includes both diet and exercise. Although scientists understand the basic physiology of Non Shivering Thermogenesis, further research is required to find the best way to apply it to a weight loss program. Spending some time in the cold everyday will not be the solution to weight loss, but it has been shown to provide a healthier lifestyle and may help you reach your weight loss goals.

IT’S TURKEY SEASON!
Let’s take a moment to relinquish in the fact that winter is almost over. Snow, you were a blast. Really appreciate the mental health days you provided in the beginning of the semester. Cold artic air, thank you so much for the stellar duck hunting you bequeathed to Eastern NC. I am truly grateful. Now, you got to go. I’m going to save the whole awkward breakup speech and just revert to an old staple - it’s not you, it’s me. What does this mean for us? Where do we go from here? This means turkey Season is a coming and I can see the beards now! Turkey Season will meander on in to these parts on April 12, 2014 and will hang around until May 10, 2014. This is just enough time to satisfy that itch to get outside and secure one last good hunt until we usher in sweet summertime. Now is the time to get your mind right and get ready for the month long season.
Turkey hunting is awesome because it requires very specific staples to bring a trophy home. It doesn’t require a lot but head to the woods without these essentials and you won’t kill much more than the mosquitos that will attempt to eat you for lunch. Let’s avoid West Nile by introducing Staple #1 – the head net. A head net is made completely of mesh or netting and is available in various camouflage patterns. You think you look ridiculous? Head out for a day of hunting with and then again without one. Let me know if you choose protection the next time around or not. A few good decoys would be Staple #2. A stout male just can’t resist a good looking lady. Make sure to get you a pretty looking Hen and you’ll be impressed where the day may lead! Staple #3: Turkey Calls. Calls are helpful only if you actually know how to use them. Practice makes perfect folks. Do the woods a favor and get to know your call before you head out
there. A bad caller will send every lizard, fly, and bird running for the hills just to get away from the noise. Your options vary and will all provide different results. The pot call, the box call, and an array of diaphragms are the most popular. The right choke and the proper loads are also a must, which of course varies depending on what you prefer and specific shotgun you are using during the hunt. Like with anything, you can spend as much or as little money as you want on turkey hunting. The right clothing is definitely a must since we do live in North Carolina where it often goes from 6 degrees to 60 degrees in 5 minutes. Check the weather and make sure to layer up if need be. Some of those April days can be surprisingly chilly. Now go make your Mama proud and put an Ol’ Tom in the freezer this spring!
